If you haven’t already heard of the legendary Atlantis, The Palm, where have you been? The hotel that has brought to life the myth of the underwater city with a modern, luxurious spin — think private yoga classes surrounded by 65,000 tropical marine life — Atlantis, Th Palm has been dominating the crescent of the manmade island for the past 12-years and it’s now set to be joined by a shiny new sister resort.

THE ROYAL HIGHLIGHTS The Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences, due to open in late 2020, is a $1.4billion 43-storey development that is set to offer a new generation of luxury living. Targeting the adult market (compared to Atlantis, The Palm which has a strong grip on holidaying families) the new hotel boasts 795 resort guest rooms and 231 residences that range from two- three- four- and five-bedroom formats. Stacked like a game of Jenga, the architecture for Royal Atlantis is exceptional and will certainly stand out in the ever-changing Dubai landscape. What’s more, the new resort boasts 92 pools with the cream of the crop, Sky Pool, providing spectacular views along its 90-metre infinity edge, located 96-metres above The Palm.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT The grand opening of The Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences will also see 17 new restaurants added to the emirate’s roster. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal is tipped to be a popular addition thanks to its menu of contemporary dishes inspired by historic British recipes while Gastón Acurio will bring his award-winning gastronomy to the emirate to create the very first cebicheria in Dubai. Michelin-starred chef José Andrés is also opening a new restaurant inside the resort that will offer plates which are bursting with diverse Spanish flavours Plus,

celebrity chef Ariana Bundy has chosen this resort to open her debut eatery, Ariana’s Persian Kitchen which is sure to delight and ignite all five of the senses. These fantastic dining destinations will add to those already available at Atlantis, The Palm including world-renowned Hakkasan, Nobu and Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen & Bar – almost every flavour you could wish for will soon be available under the two chandelier-decked roofs.

STANDOUT FEATURES There’s no denying that Atlantis, The Palm is a destination resort that’s ideal for families. With its dedicated kids’ club; sea lion and dolphin encounter opportunities; Aquaventure Waterpark that boasts more than 30 slides and attractions; and the new Wavehouse that offers a surf simulator and bowling alley… the fun is limitless. Team this with the resort’s bucket list experiences that cater to almost every age group including a helicopter tour above The Palm and the opportunity to scuba dive in the Lost Chambers Aquarium accompanied by 250 different species of marine life such as sharks, rays and tropical fish.. we bet you’ll never want to leave!

LET’S BOOK Have we got you itching to fly to Dubai and experience the two legendary Atlantis resorts? To book or for more information, contact personalised travel management company Winged Boots on 0203 816 0985 or email info@wingedboots.co.uk

Why every new parent needs a Will THERE is a lot to think about when you have a baby and often the last thing on your mind is having a Will to ensure that your children’s future is protected. But it is one of the most important things that you can do. In your Will you can designate a Guardian to care for your children and also Trustees to manage your children’s inheritance, until they are old enough to do so themselves. If you are not married to your partner, then you are not automatically legally entitled to their estate. Common-law marriage does not exist and unmarried couples have very few rights compared to those that are married. A Will, therefore, gives clear legal protection for your children and family, and peace of mind for you. Once done, it won’t keep you up at night. Even if your baby does. Join us for our next FREE Legal Talk on Wills & LPAs at Orpington Library, Tuesday 19 May 2020 at 11am. Airbus teams up with Aston Martin

the AcH130 Aston Martin Edition, the first offering from the recently-announced partnership between Aston Martin Lagonda and Airbus corporate Helicopters, was revealed at courchevel in the French Alps.

T

his stylish special edition of the ACH130 helicopter comes equipped with a range of four interior and exterior designs generated by Aston Martin, which will delight helicopter owners and pilots who appreciate the pleasures of possessing and driving high performance bespoke luxury cars. The aeronautical designers at Airbus Corporate Helicopters (ACH) and the automotive designers at Aston Martin have worked closely together for over a year, marrying ACH’s key values of excellence, quality and service with Aston Martin’s commitment to beauty, handcrafting and automotive art to bring a new level of aesthetics and rigorous attention to detail to the helicopter market. Available in four external liveries with complementary interiors, the helicopters are embellished with Aston Martin signature elements, starting with the iconic Aston Martin wings, which are embossed onto luxury leather features, tastefully positioned throughout the cabin. he Stirling Green-themed external scheme,

16 APRIL 2020

which is already flying on the first aircraft, features a painted gradient, which fades down into Jet Black on the underside of the helicopter with Skyfall Silver around the cowlings. Further external liveries are available with other Aston Martin paint colours including Xenon Grey, Arizona or Ultramarine Black exteriors. Inside, the automotive-inspired cabin, which offers a higher level of comfort, is trimmed in Pure Black ultra-suede with a palette of selectable leathers comprising Oxford Tan, Pure Black, Cormorant and Ivory. On the rear of the front seats the same brogue detailing that is found in a DB11 runs down the centre of the seat and the doors have been trimmed with leather to provide passengers with comfortable touch points during their flight. By using materials from the Aston Martin automotive palette the interior of this special edition of the ACH130 sits in harmony with the interior of Aston Martin sports cars. Each of these special edition helicopters will have a plaque included on the instrument panel which shows the partnership logos, the edition number and the owner’s name, should they wish to have it included. Aston Martin Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, said: “We have our own set of automotive design principles but in recent years we have been learning how to apply our principles to other areas of design, such as architecture, motorcycles and now helicopters. This first application of our design practices to a helicopter posed a number of interesting challenges but we have enjoyed working through them. Beauty is of vital importance to Aston Martin and to our customers and we think the ACH130 Aston Martin Edition is an inherently beautiful machine. It provided a wonderful canvas for our team to work on so we now look forward to seeing everybody’s reaction.” The ACH130 Aston Martin Edition is available on request, for further information please visit: www.airbuscorporatehelicopters.com

CHALLENGING A WILL

Judge & Priestley Associate solicitor Nasima Ansary answers the most common questions regarding challenging a will. Q. What is challenging a will? A. Contesting a will is challenging the validity of a will. A will can be invalid for various reasons. Q. What are the grounds for contesting a will? Valid reasons to contest a will include: 1. Lack of due execution –usually meaning that the will has not been signed and witnessed properly. 2. Revocation – that the will has been revoked by marriage, another will, something in writing declaring an intention to revoke, burning, tearing or otherwise destroying the will with the intention of revoking it. 3. Lack of testamentary capacity – the person making the will must have had mental capacity at the time of making a will. Mental capacity is often challenged where older people change their will and their mental capacity comes into question. 4. Lack of knowledge and approval – the person making the will did not understand, or was not fully aware, of the content of the will. 5. Undue influence – the person making the will was coerced into making a will that they did not want to make. 6. Forgery and fraud – if the entire will or the signature of the person making the will is forged, or the content is fraudulent. Q. Who can challenge a will? A. Although anyone can challenge the validity of a will, it is normally someone who is involved in the person’s life and who has been left out of the will, or not left sufficient financial provision. Q. What if I successfully challenge the will? A. If your challenge is upheld, the court has an absolute discretion to decide how the estate should be distributed. The court can choose to void the will in part or in whole. Sometimes a provision from a previous will can be reinstated. Quite often the court will look at the previous valid will. If you are not included in that will then it is unlikely that you will receive anything. Q. How long do I have to contest a will? A. There is no time limit to challenge an invalid will. However, it is crucial to act as quickly as possible. If a challenge is raised early on, it is possible to prevent a Grant of Probate being issued and assets being distributed. Difficulties often ensue if assets are distributed and evidence is lost due to delay. 18 APRIL 2020

Q. How long is the court process for challenging a will? A. It is not uncommon for the court process to take between 12-18 months. Often the delay is not caused by the parties, but by the court timetable. Q. How much does it cost to challenge a will and who pays? A. Challenging a will can be a time consuming and expensive process, given the amount of investigation required into medical records, solicitor’s files in respect of the drafting of the will, and witness evidence etc. The exact costs will therefore vary from case to case. The general rule with litigation is that the losing party is ordered to pay the winning parties costs. It should, therefore, not be assumed that the costs will come out of the estate, as this is the exception rather than the rule. Q. Is the court process my only option if I want to challenge a will? A. There are various alternative dispute resolution methods that can be explored to settle a disputed will. Mediation is particularly successful as it is typically shorter and cheaper than litigation, allows the parties to control the outcome rather than a court and can help the preservation of relationships as the longer litigation goes on, the more relationships can suffer. We can provide advice on every aspect of challenging the validity of a will. We aim to resolve matters out of court wherever possible. However, where this is not possible, we have the expertise to conduct litigation in a cost efficient and professional way.

National Trust to open Parklands and Gardens for free Notice the calming effects of spring blossom

T

he National Trust is closing its houses, shops and cafes but aims, wherever possible to keep its parks, gardens and open spaces in the countryside and coastal regions open free of charge during coronavirus social distancing period. Following the increasing numbers of safety measures advised by the government to limit the spread of the new coronavirus, COVID-19, The National Trust has announced that it plans to keep as many of its parks and gardens open and free of charge. “The National Trust was founded 125 years ago for the benefit of the entire nation,” says the National Trust’s director-general Hilary McGrady. “We want to honour our mission – to enable people and nature to thrive. Over the coming weeks we will do all that we can to keep on providing public benefit through caring for places and giving people access wherever possible.” “While we will close our indoor areas to help fight the spread of coronavirus, we recognise that people are likely to need access to open space.” This follows the UK government’s advice to stop non-essential contact with other people and avoid all unnecessary travel, known as social distancing. Whilst social distancing, people should work from home when possible, spend less time in public places, and avoid social venues. Self-isolating is a different measure, where people need to cut themselves off from the rest of the world, even avoiding leaving the house to buy food or essentials.

20 APRIL 2020

Spending time in nature can also improve your wellbeing. Research has shown that just 20 minutes could help to improve your mood. When the apple blossom is in bloom, you know that spring has truly arrived. Apple Trees - Apple blossom appears from March-April and is white with a hint of pink. It grows in hedgerows and scrubland in moist, heavy soil. It’s a short tree with greyish-brown flecked bark and a gnarled (‘crabbed’) shape. Crab apple trees often indicate past human habitation – the apples can be used in cooking and the wood is good for carving and firewood. Cherry Trees - Wild cherry produces small baubles of white flowers covering the tree in AprilMay with a confident flourish. It loves sunlight and fertile soil, typically growing singly in hedgerows or at woodland edges. The bark is a stunning reddishbrown marked with horizontal ‘scars’. Blackthorn Shrubs - Blackthorn is one of the first shrubs to burst into flower in March. The white blossom appears before the leaves. The tree is short with smooth, dark brown bark and found in hedgerows and scrub in full sun. The tree can often last up to 100 years and traditionally was used for making walking sticks or shillelaghs in Ireland.

A SIMPLE WILL OR A SMART WILL? A valid up to date Will, prepared by a qualified solicitor is essential to help protect your dependants from the rules of intestacy which are by no means certain to ensure that your estate will go to those you would have chosen. A simple Will can help you do this, will not cost the earth and we would be happy to talk you through the process.

Don’t miss out on an opportunity However your Will can do so much more. It is a brilliant means of solving specific problems you and your family may be facing. That is why we have created a series of Wills that can be used to address your more complicated requirements: Unmarried couples – Avoid double taxation for unmarried couples and potentially save up to £130,000 in Inheritance Tax.

Protect vulnerable dependants – Look after the finances and welfare of vulnerable spouses or children when you have gone.

More than one marriage – Where more than one marriage is involved this Will can ensure the right family members inherit from your estate.

Business owners – If you own a business, you can structure its assets so that it does not become liable to Inheritance Tax on your death.

Inheritance Tax – Use trusts to pay no tax on the first death and substantially reduce tax on the second death.

Care fees and the family home – Don’t allow the value of your family home to be lost to pay care fees in later life.

If any of these issues is relevant to you please call your local Wellers office to arrange a no obligation initial meeting. In the present environment you may not be able to travel or meet in person and we are happy to arrange consultations by phone and video conferencing if you would prefer. BROMLEY

interview with Polo singles: for people with a passion for polo and compassion for ponies and people What inspired Polo Singles? The long term goal of Polo Singles is to set up our charity, Special Forces Horses. The combination of wanting to give back to horses and people prompted us all to look at starting the website in order to fund our charity which aims to help veterans cope with Combat PTSD through contact with horses. Horses have a long-proven track record as therapy animals and equine facilitated learning: We aim to help both horses and people with Special Forces Horses, supported by the fun medium of online dating. Polo is such a sociable lifestyle; it is a great way to meet passionate, entrepreneurial and inspiring people on a personal and professional level. Everyone involved in Polo Singles met through polo and are now longstanding friends as well as business partners! What makes your lifestyle dating membership stand out from other dating companies? As Polo Singles has been set up as a means to support our charity, Special Forces Horses, we believe we are truly unique. As one of our new members, Mike, says, “I think this is a brilliant niche idea as I am a polo addict and we all love to date! The charity angle you do also resonates with me strongly. I also expect that it will do so very strongly with all members of the polo community. Their love of their ponies makes them more likely in my view to be altruistic for the right causes than say the average person in the population.” By choosing Polo Singles you will be helping others whilst having fun. Your membership will go towards supporting pony welfare and re-training, and in assisting the brave service personnel in their recovery from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Who will Polo Singles appeal to? Polo Singles is the world’s only online dating service dedicated to the polo lifestyle. Whether you just love watching polo for the truly lovely horses and want to meet up with a group of people to watch a match from the social side, date someone who understands the passion for a sport (and all that goes with it!) or you are looking to expand your knowledge and network within polo, then Polo Singles is the right platform for you. As 55 million people worldwide watch and support polo, there is plenty of opportunity for members of Polo Singles to expand their social circles! What is your philosophy? Giving back whenever you can is a win-win for all, and when you can bring smiles and fun along the way, what’s not to love?! We are always accessible and like to provide a personal service whether it’s by phone or email. As horses have an amazing proven track record

EARLY SPRING AT EMMETTS GARDEN ONE OF KENT’S BEST KEPT SECRETS

E

mmetts Garden is renowned for its show of British Bluebells that blanket the woodlands from Mid-May, but it’s the 14,000 of spring bulbs and cherry tree blossom bursting in to life earlier in the season that really steal the show. March at Emmetts Garden sees a show of over 3,000 cheery daffodils and crocuses carpeting the grounds in swathes. A particular favourite for Head Gardener, Matt Scott, is the angel tear daffodil, Narcissus triandus, that covers the North Garden. These then make way for the snakeshead and crown imperial fritillaries that line the borders there. Though the Rock Garden is one for all seasons, spring is when it really shines. Tulips cover the area with the tulip ‘batalinii bright gem’, mixed with Lithospermum diffusum ‘Heavenly blue’ really adding some bold colour contrasts. Another striking show is the delicate purple pasqueflower combined with the yellow Erythronium ‘Pagoda’, or dog’s tooth violet. Matt Scott, Head Gardener said “Spring at Emmetts Garden is certainly my favourite time of the year with so many of our specimens are coming back to life. The team put in a lot of hard work in what can be a cold and wet winter planting these 14,000 spring bulbs, so seeing them burst from the ground set against some great views standing on one of the highest points in Kent, it really gives a sense of accomplishment.” Magnolia are another highlight that add delicate paper-thin bracts of pink and white. One specimen to look out for the is original 110-year-old magnolia

26 MARCH 2020

in the South Garden underplanted with 3,000 blue Scilla siberica. The real highlight however are the young cherry trees that stand in the meadow. Blossoming towards the end of April and early May, the young cherry trees, Prunus fugenzo, are native to Japan. Roughly 50 in number, these specimens are a rarity for both their number and the lollipop shape they have been worked into. These beautiful pink blossoms are underplanted with a carpet of over 6,000 pink, red and black tulips, a design first introduced at Emmetts Garden in 1910 by owner Frederic Lubbock. This avenue of cherry trees and tulips take your eye through and across far-reaching views of the Kentish Weald. For more curious specimens the two South American snowdrop trees, Halesia Carolina and Halesia Tetraptera var. Monticola bear dainty pendants of snowdrop-like blooms. Another blink and you’ll miss it moment are the four Davidia Involucrata, or handkerchief trees. Anytime from April visitors can see the early signs of what will be a three-week delicate display of white bracts that hang like handkerchiefs from branches. The one original tree at Emmetts Garden is around 110 years old, following a shipwreck on the journey back from China, it was only the Davidia seeds that Plant Hunter Ernest Wilson was able to salvage.

SOTHEBY’S

buthe/polke: friends S

otheby’s S|2 gallery presents an exhibition of works by radical Post-War German artists, Michael Buthe and Sigmar Polke. Born in 1944 and 1941 respectively, the artists each grew up against the backdrop of a Post-War society in flux. By the 1970s, they had embraced a liberal, transcendental way of living, which was in turn reflected in the experimental and otherworldly quality of their works. Each brimming with a heady sense of psychedelia, buthe/polke: friends will feature 20 mixed-media artworks, which together shine a light on the nonconformist lifestyles that connected the artists to one another, and to the network of avantgarde young creatives they lived and worked alongside, including Gerhard Richter, Martin Kippenberger and Rosemarie Trockel. From the 1970s onwards, Buthe and Polke each abandoned the constraints of their respective realities, embarking on exploratory journeys to Africa and the Middle East. Polke spent time photographing his travels, infusing the people, bears and dancing Afghan monkeys he caught on camera with a surreal combination of word and collage (see Untitled (Cardplayers), 1975). He vacillated between artistic techniques, and took psychedelic drugs which pushed his work into new realms of tonal, material and chemical experimentation (see Untitled, 1994). Likewise, in 1970, Buthe absconded from Cologne to Morocco in the hope of attaining a new level of artistic freedom. In 1972, he spent five months in the beguiling seaside city of Essaouria, its high-colour buildings and cornucopian souks saturating his art, which moved from quasi-

28 APRIL 2020

until 28 May 2020 Minimalism to Bohemian exuberance. In Buthe’s later works, including Landschaft mit Schnecken (Landscape with Snails) and Untitled (wall object), found objects including branches, pine cones and snail shells burst beyond the limits of the canvas, reinterpreting and rearticulating the surrounding space. Elsewhere, Buthe painted faces over photographs of stones and, in a cult-like endeavour, combined them with poems in homage to a medieval Majorcan mystic (see Steine No. 63). In 2016, a candid interview with Buthe’s friend, collector Ingvild Goetz, recalled: “Michael [Buthe] was living right in the main souq of Marrakesh, the liveliest part of town. His house had a beautiful courtyard with a fountain, and cats climbing on the trees all around. It was simply idyllic. Most of all I remember the hot evenings we spent outdoors, and the strange noises in the background. And I remember how Michael once concocted a drink with poppy seed in it that was so strong we could hardly get up from our chairs. It just was a totally different world – and that was Michael’s world…he knew all the magicians, conjurors, soothsayers and witches personally – all the most interesting people”. This quote was taken from michael buthe: constellations - a new artist monograph produced for the exhibition, in collaboration with Ted Bonin of Alexander and Bonin gallery, and Hannelore Kunert, a lifelong friend of the artist. the rough guide to making it yours BUYING your home is one of the most exciting times of your life and it will probably be your biggest expense too. So here’s a practical guide on the different steps involved. 1

Apply For Your Mortgage

6

Understand what is affordable and what you can borrow.

2

a) Property Information Form

Instruct a Solicitor

The most important step to ensuring that it goes as smoothly as possible.

4

Surveys

This form will include practical details about the property, including boundaries, notices and disputes. You will need to check these to make sure you are happy with the content.

b) Fixtures & Fittings Form

There are several types. If you have a valuation only survey, this is carried out for your lender to ensure that the property is valued correctly for your mortgage. If you wish to have a more in-depth survey you should have a home buyer’s report/ survey or a structural survey.

5

Information Forms

The seller will normally be required to complete standard forms which will include:

Remember to state that it is ‘subject to contract’.

3

These will be investigated to confirm the legal owner, whether the property is mortgaged and any restrictions affecting the property.

7

Make Your Offer

The Seller’s Title Deeds

Searches

These will provide information about the property and the local area. The different types of searches are: Local Authority, Water & Drainage, Environmental and Chancel Repair.

This will list what the seller is leaving and taking from the property. Again, make sure you’re happy with what is listed.

8

Leasehold

If you’re buying a leasehold property, additional enquiries will be asked, particularly relating to service charges and insurance.

9

Mortgage Offers

Make sure this is in place, and you have the required deposit, so that you can exchange contracts.

10

Exchange of Contracts

When everyone is in agreement and all are ready to proceed, contracts will be exchanged. It also means that the deposit is paid to the seller’s solicitors.

11

Insure Your Property

This is something that people sometimes overlook, but as a rule it is important to insure your property from the date of exchange.

A global outlook with a world-class vision Bickley Park’s vision is to deliver a world-class education for boys. The aim is to put the building blocks in place to help prepare pupils to prosper in what is a rapidly changing and interconnected world. Giving them a global outlook and preparing them for a future incorporating diverse communities is a priority. Patrick Wenham, Headmaster, explains.

“I

believe it is extremely important to ensure that the boys at Bickley Park have an outward looking perspective. Particularly with the challenges currently presented on the back of the Coronavirus, we should instil in them the qualities of resilience and flexibility which will be key attributes now and in their future lives.” Bickley Park was shortlisted in the national TES Independent School Awards for ‘Prep School of the Year 2019’. The school believes in tailoring the curriculum to respond to male learning. With one hundred years experience of teaching boys, the school thoroughly understands that studying has to be

41 APRIL 2020

relevant and engaging to their interests and needs. The 2019/20 academic year was off to a flying start when the school opened the doors of a brand new state-of-the-art science centre. The two storey building blends in seamlessly behind the current sports hall on the prep department site and comprises two high-quality science labs, which also function as classrooms. The new centre incorporates cutting edge design with combined practical and theory learning spaces, providing a contemporary and spacious science facility ideally suited to today’s collaborative teaching methods. A time capsule, to mark the school’s centenary, has also been embedded in the

wall of the centre, which the boys have filled with relevant cultural items reflecting our times, whilst also imagining the future. “This facility is second to none for a prep school,” said Sam Patel, Assistant Head and Director of School Development. “Our boys are now able to learn science in a secondary school style environment, which we hope will stimulate and motivate their scientific curiosity at an earlier age. We know boys are inspired by practical and hands on learning and we are thrilled to be able to provide the best possible environment for this.”

The Sport and Outdoor Education Quadrant provides the opportunity to experience up to 26 different sports and a fantastic outdoor education programme, including Adventure School, which enables years 7 and 8 to try to drive Landrovers, and culminates in the Three Peaks Challenge trip and an experience on the fastest zipwire in the world. The facilities at school are second to none, including a climbing wall, swimming pool and a sports ground. This Quadrant aims to develop team skills, leadership and boost personal qualities such as resilience and independence. The Arts Quadrant provides a higher than usual number of performance opportunities than most Prep Schools with performances of ‘Twelfth Night’ and ‘Treasure Island’ already this year and an upcoming performance of ‘The Music Man’ in planning. There is a strong school choir and band alongside opportunities for the younger children to learn the ocarina and ukulele as well as the hand drums in lessons. With a strong emphasis on collaboration, our syllabus helps to build confidence and harness the ability to communicate effectively. This term all year 1 to year 8 boys have participated in the annual schools’ public speaking competition. Those who reach the final will be delivering their speeches in an interesting local venue, in the presence of a wellknown personality.

The school curriculum is based around the school’s unique Four Quadrants of Learning, with each element incorporating aspects of a future world view. The Academic Quadrant includes World Culture lessons, where the boys study a major world culture such as Russia, China and India, whilst learning Russian, Chinese Mandarin and Hindi at a conversational level. In addition, the humanities curriculum is undergoing a shift in emphasis to ensure that the children understand fake news and where it stems from and, importantly, don’t just study historical and social events from a British viewpoint but interpret them with a global outlook. We continually review the opportunities available, to give the children the best understanding of the world in which they are going to be living and working. The Community Quadrant promotes awareness of the rewards that can be gained from engagement with different communities, while encouraging a sense of responsibility, understanding and service towards others. Last year, the school began an initiative called ‘Cultural Diversity and Friendship though Cricket’, which has developed whole community links with Gujarat and India through a successful relationship with the Indian Kiran More Cricket Academy. The affiliation embodies our whole school ethos of experiencing global citizenship and cultural diversity at a young age. We also have an ongoing relationship with a local care home which some of the nursery children visit on a regular basis for communal activities, such as singing. Both elderly people and children get a lot out of this local community integration.

“Nationally boys are being outperformed academically by girls from nursery to university and the gap is set to widen.” Patrick Wenham goes on to explain, “In England, young women are now 36 percent more likely to apply to degree courses than young men, official Ucas data reveals. “At Bickley Park we aim to provide an education that inspires and engages boys and enables them to stand out from the crowd at senior school, university and in their future lives as characterful, interesting young men.”

A DYNAMIC EARLY YEARS TEAM Early Years education has traditionally, alongside other caring professions such as nursing, been viewed as a job for women.

S

adly, there are careers that men are still reluctant to follow due to unfounded ideas that suggest working with under 5s is “unmanly.” A career in Early Years couldn’t be further from the truth – we teach a dynamic, physically active group who need engaging, fun, energetic and spontaneous staff who are always prepared to go the extra mile and are ready for anything – a career in Early Years is not for the faint-hearted. We feel privileged that our Reception Class is taught by a male teacher. At Bishop Challoner we are fortunate to have a diverse Junior School team, giving children male role models and the understanding that men can be interested in education. Good role models for boys early on in life are essential. While these role models can of course be male or female, if boys observe men immersed in picture books, singing ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ and drawing and discussing pictures with fervour, it will mean that they too will feel these are things they can enjoy. Boys must experience men in caring, nurturing roles if they are to grow into the kind of adults we want in society. Excellent male role models also have a positive effect on girls’ expectations of the men in their lives. It is also important to have a diverse workforce, with a variety of interaction styles, interests and approaches to teaching, to ensure children are receiving an appropriately rounded education, reflecting the gender balance in their lives and the community as a whole. Children at Bishop Challoner start their Early Years journey in the term that they turn 3 years of age. They

are closely supported in their development and nurtured through their pre-school phase by the nursery team, which boasts a highly experienced and highly qualified work force – including 4 graduate leaders. The team works closely with each other to offer great continuity. Specialist teaching staff are also a familiar presence and teach sessions in such subjects as French, Music and PE, allowing the children a taste of different staff and teaching styles. There is strong emphasis on school-readiness, coupled with a sense of independence and resilience. The EYFS Department works seamlessly together to promote excellent transition into the main school. Ms Ludlam, Head of Nursery and EYFS Co-ordinator, works in close partnership with the Reception teacher, to ensure the needs of children making transition are met and that there is continuity in both the child’s development and in their learning.

aving chosen a less than cash-soaked career in teaching, the financial investment market remains an almost entirely closed book to me. But one concept from the world of stocks and shares has huge resonance in education right now – the ‘flight to quality’, namely what happens in the financial markets during times of uncertainty or instability when the smart money pours from speculative, higher-risk investments into reputable, long-established safe havens such as gold or US government bonds. Now the same thing is happening in higher education. The dramatic expansion in undergraduate places in the UK and the disruptions caused by innovations such as tuition fees, degree apprenticeships and ‘conditional-unconditional offers’ has led to real uncertainty about the true value of degrees and the benefits of going to university at all. And, less confident than any solid degree from any decent university is a rock-solid ticket to the middle classes, young people are gravitating to quality, well-established degrees that offer a secure pathway to professional life. Courses such as law, architecture, pharmacology and radiology have all seen increased applications, but the highest ‘flight to quality’ by far is towards medical, dental and veterinary school. Applying to medical school and undergraduate dentistry and veterinary courses has never been more competitive or more complex. Bristol’s Medical School receives 14 applicants per place, at Exeter it is 11 per place and Edinburgh Vet School gets a dozen applicants per place. Entrance requirements have increased steadily from ABB in my day to as high as A*AA today. Some medical schools will not consider applicants who have retaken any part of their A-levels, whilst others have announced that if you apply after a prior degree, realistically you should have achieved first class honours. Desperate to allocate their golden tickets as fairly as possible, the universities apply an idiosyncratic range of criteria and qualifying tests to choose

between the queue of candidates. There are aptitude tests, interview tasks and, particularly for aspiring vets, a brutal requirement to complete work experience. It can feel as if applying to join one of the clinical professions has become a full-time job in itself. Which is why we devote so much time and energy to our medics, dentistry and vets programme. Our team of specialist advisers offer students the best advice on where to apply, and provide rigorous preparation for personal statement writing, aptitude tests and interviews. It starts early, as Year 11 students are invited to attend talks and presentations on medical careers, current affairs in the sector and an introduction to ethics. Sixth Formers receive regular sessions on medical ethics, situational judgement, current affairs, imaging methods, international systems and practice business models. They take part in a medics and vets careers ‘speed dating’ session, a discussion with a local GP, an online course via The Medic Portal and a presentation from a postgraduate medic on their experience of applying to university. There are also practice sessions, with experts in medical/ veterinary/dentistry careers, for multiple mini interviews, Oxbridge-style interviews and a panel interview. Students have one-to-one sessions with our careers advisors for their UCAS applications and personal statements, and we provide support on highly selective universities as well as other routes into medicine. The programme is hard work for our students but it pays off. Last year 85% of our aspiring medics and vets successfully secured an offer from at least one university and 100% were called to interview. We celebrate every offer, as the great achievement it undoubtedly is. Watching these young people work so hard for their goal serves as a further reminder, if required, that, however gratifying it might be to moan about snowflakes and millennials, we probably had it a little easier in our youth. www.hppc.co.uk

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives. In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his first pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recalls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did that.” After learning from his father about the craft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduated with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital building. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed 52 APRIL 2020

immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. High-profile devotees also include the Duchess of Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the City.” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would prove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularity, Choo was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue, who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots, sensed a larger market for Choo’s creations. She approached the shoemaker about partnering to create a line of ready-to-wear footwear -

“It’s a beautiful, distinctive art, and shoes are like the foundations. If the foundations aren’t right, the building won’t stand upright, and if a woman’s balance isn’t right, nothing else is.” - JIMMY CHOO

with a goal of creating a global luxury business. In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeping the focus on creating high-end footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every single pair had to be made by Choo himself. They contracted with Italian factories and opened their first boutique shop in Motcomb Street, London. Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring Hollywood celebrities including Julia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo stores opening in Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome, Ginza in Tokyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Street and Bond Street here in London. And by the turn of the century, the Choo name was a global brand, with high-end retail clients that included Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying Choo footwear. The Choo brand had also expanded to handbags and other accessories. But in the background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, Choo didn’t think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoes the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear for specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011 when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more than £500m. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Jimmy Choo has a global store network encompassing more than 150 stores and is present in the most prestigious department stores worldwide. This is what makes Jimmy Choo an interesting pairing with Michael Kors, as the former is known for its sky-high stilettos and glam, crystal-embellished designs, while the latter gravitates towards down-toearth leather goods and ready-to-wear. Jimmy himself now concentrates on a very personal business, where he designs directly for clients in high-end couture. Jimmy Choo was awarded an OBE in 2002, and girls and women around the world continue to covet owning a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes! www.jimmychoo.com

What’s not to love about a Retirement Village? T

he start of a new year is all about new beginnings and how life can be improved. Whether you are a first-time buyer or someone in retirement looking to downsize to a more manageable property, moving to a new house can often be top of this list. For those in retirement there’s now more choice than ever. With the growth in retirement villages it’s now not just about moving to a better sized property but also about moving to a friendly and caring community where your property and gardens are maintained for you. One such retirement village is Emerson Park, in Hextable, Kent, who have an open day on Saturday 25th January (10am – 4pm) so that visitors can learn more about the appeal of such a community. Paul Hart, manager at Emerson Park commented, “Many people have the preconceived idea that retirement apartments are small pokey flats with very little or no support and facilities. This certainly isn’t the case at Emerson Park; large well-designed apartments with the very highest quality specification are complimented with luxury amenities such as the Club House Room where you can meet friends for a coffee or enjoy a 3-course meal, obviously after enjoying a G&T in the bar first! You can keep in shape in the gym, be pampered in the hair and beauty salon or enjoy a good film in the cinema. Or why not take up a new hobby? Our dedicated Events & Activities team arrange a whole host of social events tailored around the interests of the people living here.” As well as having all these facilities on your doorstep a move to such a retirement community not only means you can enjoy the independence of a new home but also live without the worry of the

54 FEBRUARY 2020

ongoing upkeep and maintenance associated with an older property. As well as this is the support system which is available at certain retirement developments and one Paul was keen to explain. “It’s not only the apartment and facilities which people are buying into at Emerson Park, but also the services. Our driver will provide scheduled trips, either to the local supermarket or to places of interest such as National Trust properties or a theatre trip. Our gardeners and maintenance team will ensure the site looks its best throughout the year. Plus, all apartments have the reassurance of an emergency call system which are answered by members of staff who are on-site 24-hours a day.” Emerson Park also has the added reassurance of its very own care home on-site, Emerson Grange, which provides the very best residential, nursing and dementia care on a permanent or short-term basis. And forget what you think about care homes, Emerson Grange is more like a high-end hotel. For further information on Emerson Park call 01322 515415 or visit www.cinnamoncc.com/emersonpark

DAME VIVIENNE

WESTWOOD

D

ame Vivienne Isabel Westwood OBE is a British fashion designer known for her influence on punk fashion and dressing the Sex Pistols, as well as causing a stir with her political opinions and outspoken attitude. It’s no surprise that her 76 years on earth have included some very interesting moments. Vivienne studied fashion and silversmithing at the Harrow School of Art in London at the age of 17, but left after one term saying that a workingclass girl could never make a living in the art world. She went on to work in a factory and then as a

primary school teacher. During this period, she created her own jewellery, which she sold from a stall on Portobello Road. She met Malcolm McLaren, and they moved into a council flat in Clapham. In 1971 McLaren opened a boutique at 430 King’s Road called “Let It Rock” later known as “Sex” and now World’s End. Westwood created clothes drawing inspiration from bikers and fetishists. The “punk style” included bondage gear, safety pins, razor blades, bicycle or toilet chains on clothing and spiked dog collars/chokers for jewellery, as well as outrageous make-up and hair.

“She met Malcolm McLaren, and they moved into a council flat in Clapham”

During this period, McLaren became manager of the punk band, the Sex Pistols, and subsequently the two garnered attention as the band wore Westwood’s and McLaren’s designs. It was their ability to synthesise clothing and music that shaped the 1970s UK punk scene. Vivienne Westwood went on to open four shops in London, and by 2015, operated 12 retail outlets in the UK with 63 worldwide. In April 1989 Westwood appeared on the cover of Tatler dressed as then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The suit that Westwood wore had been ordered for Thatcher but had not yet been delivered. The cover bore the caption “This woman was once a punk”.

“In April 1989 Westwood appeared on the cover of Tatler dressed as then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher” She was awarded an OBE in 1992, and in 2006, the title of “Dame” by the Prince of Wales. In 2007, Westwood was awarded the gong for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design at the British Fashion Awards. Vivienne Westwood has long been known for her political activism and using her brand to draw attention to causes such as climate change, nuclear weapons and human rights. In January 2015, she announced her support of the Green Party, and openly supports Amnesty International, Environmental Justice Foundation and Friends of the Earth. For more than 35 years, Westwood has designed clothes for heroes. Outrageously flamboyant, they are beautiful, brave and often swim against the tide. Her Red Label collection has a huge presence at every London Fashion Week. www.viviennewestwood.com R I 2L 0 22002 05 6 APA RP IL 93

CREATING BRIGITTE BARDOT’S ICONIC BOUFFANT HAIRSTYLE the French film star’s famous ‘do is as popular today as it was in the 1950s.

W

hen it comes to famous hair styles throughout history, has their ever been a more influential ‘do than Brigitte Bardot’s? While cuts like Mary Quant’s sharp pixie crop or Jennifer Aniston’s The Rachel may come and go, the Bardot bouffant looks as cool now as it did when the French movie star shot to fame in the 1950s. Now, a new range of products from the Brigitte Bardot Foundation aims to help you get the movie star look - whether you’re blonde or not. “Tousled, teased, textured... Bardot had the finest bedhead that ever was,” says hairstylist and Bardot ambassador Paul Herrington. “With modern relevance, Bardot’s iconic look has been emulated by successive generations of supermodels like Claudia Schiffer, Giselle Bundchen, and Kate Moss.” Combining a bouffant shape at the crown of the head and loose, messy waves, the style gives volume to the locks while framing the face. So how’s it done? Here, Emmanuel Esteban, session stylist at Salon Sloane, offers a step by step guide on how to create the iconic Brigitte Bardot look... 60 APRIL 2020

1. Starting with clean, damp hair, spray with Bardot Lift + Volume Spray (£19, Pretty Little Thing) on the roots to give enough lift and achieve natural body, then spray heat protection on midlengths to ends. 2. Dry your hair upside down using a paddle brush (I like to use natural bristle brushes) with downward strokes ensuring you are smoothing the cuticle and creating volume on the roots. 3. Once hair is dry, divide it into two sections. First, the top section of hair from the temples to the nape of the neck. The second section is the rest of your hair. 4. On the lower part of your head spray with Bardot Texture Spray (£19, Pretty Little Thing) at least six inches away from your head and curl in large sections using a curling wand to achieve a wavy, textured, messy look. 5. On the top section, curl your hair with a large barrelled tong starting from the back of your head, sectioning horizontally through to the front towards your face focusing on achieving root lift. 6. Backcomb the very top section of your hair. Start with gentle combing at the front, gradually building up the volume towards the back, including the crown - this will create the Bardot bouffant shape. Then spray lightly with hairspray. Brush all of your hair gently with a paddle brush. 7. Without being precise, take the top part of your hair and pin it at the back of your head to achieve a half up-half down look - secure the pin pushing upwards to create more volume. To finish the look, pull out fine pieces of hair around your face to frame it.

t’s no secret that the world of work is changing. With the rise of co-working and freelancing, it’s now possible to get down to business in just about any location. And yet if we’ve learnt anything from the sterile interiors of the early 90s, it’s that environment matters. Recent studies suggest that a well-designed space can lead to significant boosts in productivity and cognitive function — quantitative evidence of the “feel-good” factor of great design. With 50% of the UK now working remotely at least once a week, creating a functional home office has become an essential task if we wish to maintain boundaries between work and play. Here at Chaplins, we’ve been giving it some thought and have come up with our Home Office Style Guide to help you get it right first time.

PLAN LIKE AN ExECUTIvE When designing your home office, it’s good to take some time to visualise how everything will work together. Don’t forget to incorporate some sort of breakout zone — a space in which to think or read when you’re not obliged to be sat behind a keyboard. In smaller offices, this could be as simple as a generous pouf. In larger homes, a small sofa, armchair or (if you’re feeling particularly psychoanalytic) chaise lounge. Incorporating these elements ensures your office is a space you’ll actually enjoy spending time in, while accommodating for both active and passive work. 64 APRIL 2020

ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY? While the majority of offices are characterised by orthopaedic-looking chairs, designers have a long history of producing statement styles. Some of the best date back to the mid-century, including iconic collections such as the Eames Aluminium Range and Knoll’s Executive Saarinen collection. Both offer top-notch ergonomics and a timeless design language to boot. Sustainable design lovers might also want to consider Vitra’s N02 Recycled Office Chair — crafted entirely from circular polypropylene and recycled aluminium. Lightweight and compact, it’s a great choice for those who are short on space.

NO MORE BORING DESK JOBS A great desk is the backbone of any contemporary

home office. And whether small or stately, there are a variety of exciting options. For homes in which every square inch counts, look for compact desks with clean lines, hidden storage and handy charging points. In order to maximise the available floor space, opt for a chair with a lithe base like Gubi’s Beetle Swivel Chair. If space isn’t an issue, you can experiment with bold sweeping desks such as Zanotta’s Cavour or Cattelan Italia’s Wall Street — each offering a real interior power play. Where you position your desk is equally important. If your home office benefits from lots of direct sunlight, be sure to orient your desk so that any screens aren’t out of action for portions of the day. Experimenting with layout can also affect how you experience your space. Try to avoid being cramped up against walls where possible. One option is to float your desk in the centre of the room, creating a focal point that will compel you to sit down and get things done.

MAKE LIGHT WORK OF YOUR DAILY TASKS Modern task lighting is another must for any productive home office. As well as allowing you to work into the evening, it’ll help create a snug and inviting atmosphere – the perfect place to ponder all those frustrated souls on their morning commute. If your work involves sketching, drawing or examining projects, you’ll want to opt for a versatile lamp that allows you to shape and direct the light. Artemide’s Tolomeo and Flos’ Kelvin collections are particularly revered in this regard. For laptop-based work, any lamp that provides a soft gush of down-ward illumination will do the trick. If you don’t quite have room for a table lamp on your desk, consider experimenting with some strategically hung pendant lights. We love Louis Poulsen’s PH 5 and Doo-Wop Collections for office spaces.

MASTER THE ART OF STORAGE

air desk by gallotti & radice, From £1,392

Clutter can come in many forms. But whether it’s an overflowing inbox or a mass grave of admin, the effect is equally draining. Finding the right storage will help you keep your home office organised and a joyous place to work. Before diving in, it’s wise to think about how accessible the documents that need storing will need to be. If they are items that you refer to constantly, then some linear shelving might be preferable to under-desk units or sideboards. One of the most flexible options available is USM’S Haller system. Modular in nature, it can be added to or subtracted from in accordance to your needs, making it ideal for homes of all sizes. Need some additional help planning your contemporary home office? Do you own a conservatory not fit for purpose? T

here are literally many 1000’s of home owners throughout the UK who own a conservatory, it is without doubt that a high majority are totally inefficient during the summer and winter months. Is this you, do you own a conservatory that is really not fit for purpose? A high number of conservatories installed during the late 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s will have a polycarbonate roof. A roof with no insulation value and virtually zero protection from direct sunlight. This gives you a room which is far too hot during summer and has a fridge effect in winter. You also have a roof which is difficult to keep clean as well as being a haven for insects. The frustrating thing for many owners is that the conservatories are in a satisfactory condition, all double glazed with many years of life to offer. More and more home owners are opting to have a more thermally efficient roof installed. High-Tech have the perfect solution. A very popular option is to create a thermally efficient sky room by removing the existing roof. A timber frame roof will be constructed to building regulation standard. Timber joists are then reinforced to accept a glass lantern or flat roof light. Treated timber boarding and warm roof insulation is fitted along with new external UPVC roof line and guttering products. It is then made permanently water tight with our lifetime guaranteed flat roof system. The glass roof light is installed. Followed by

70 APRIL 2020

W

hen it used to come to re-surfacing your driveway the first thought was always Tarmac or Block paving. Both systems can look tired quite quickly. Have you heard of or seen the surface ‘Resin Bound’? It is a smart new way to revitalise your driveway, path or patio. The ‘Resin Bound’ surface is a striking improvement on other older surfaces like block paving. For instance, Resin Bound is low maintenance which means you won’t have to be outside weeding your driveway constantly. It is also permeable which means no puddling. Enviro-Tech Resin Systems Ltd is a local family run business, which have been installing ‘Resin Bound’ for over 10 years and have been asked to install in many prestigious places over the years, including The Royal Botanical Gardens @ Kew. Both Owners of Enviro-Tech have been in the Resin industry for over 20 years and their knowledge on the subject is second to none. When it comes to installing a resin bound driveway you would ideally want an open grade tarmac subbase, but if your existing surface is solid and stable the resin bound system could also be installed onto that. The Resin Bound Surface has become increasingly popular over the past 6-7 years. If you are entertaining the idea of freshening up your driveway you can find out more by visiting www.enviro-tech-resin-systems.com.

Hammerton’s

Kitchens for Real Cooks H ammerton’s Kitchens for Real Cooks is an independent kitchen design company and showroom. Mike Hammerton created Hammerton’s Kitchens in the heart of his own home nearly 30 years ago. These days the showroom and workshop are at Sunset Farm in leafy East Sussex and the business continues with the same family values. People often tell us they’ve always longed for a new kitchen. Imagine yourself in a stunning painted Shaker style kitchen in your favourite colour, a beautiful wooden kitchen with warm earthy tones or maybe something more contemporary in gloss or dramatic colourway. At Hammerton’s we know that your kitchen is the real heart of your home. It’s where the family comes together, where you sit with a coffee planning your next holiday and welcome friends with a glass of something tasty! You can have it all at Hammerton’s. Mike says: “your perfect kitchen is all in the design and planning. I’ve been designing and fitting bespoke kitchens in Sussex and the South-East for over thirty years. You don’t need to come to us with it all worked out, we’ll talk it through with you. Time spent considering all the options with a kitchen designer really is time well spent.” How are we coping with the current emergency situation? What about a consultation via phone, email or skype to get the design process rolling so that when the situation stabilises you will be ready to go? To limit exposure the showroom will remain open by appointment so that only one group of clients is in the showroom at any one time. Please see our website for updates. Of course, all this would be a waste of time if we compromised on the installation.

78 APRIL 2020

Properly installed, your kitchen will look good year after year and our installers are chosen not only for their expertise and dedication but also for their good manners. Our qualified electricians and gas fitters will install the appliances as part of our service. It’s always tempting to save a few pounds by buying the appliances yourself off the internet, but think about who is responsible if, say, the fridge doesn’t fit, or your new hob turns out to be damaged when it’s unpacked? Integrated appliances are exactly that: part of the furniture. No need to wait in for delivery either; in short, we’ll save you the hassle! As Mike says: “we’re big enough to cope but small enough to care about each of our customers. I lead a friendly, design-led company which bridges the gap between ‘out of the catalogue’ kitchen supermarkets, unable to be flexible when it comes to bespoke design, and carpenters, who whilst making fine furniture, do not always understand kitchen design. I always keep everything as environmentally friendly as possible, we don’t supply ‘flat-pack’ and our suppliers are all based in the UK, except for our granite, quartz and marble tops which we source from the best of suppliers in the home country of stone; Italy.” A Hammerton’s kitchen is designed especially for you and with you; working together all the way. Give us a call or drop an email, we’re always happy to talk! 01435 868611. www.hammertons.co.uk
