Thoroughly

JOANNE CLIFTON Winner of Strictly Come Dancing 2016, stars in Broadway’s multi award-winning musical comedy, Thoroughly Modern Millie.

W

e asked Joanne a bit about her experience in musical theatre, ahead of the shows visit to The Orchard Theatre, Dartford in April. WE OBVIOUSLY KNOW YOU BEST FOR YOUR DANCING, WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE IN ACTING AND SINGING? When I was younger I always wanted to do musical theatre. I just adored the music, the stories told through the songs, and loved watching them. I would always sing as singing is a big thing for me. I do it all the time and strangely enough, when I feel scared I sing!!! So I had singing and acting lessons as a child alongside my dancing. WILL YOUR EXPERIENCE IN STRICTLY COME DANCING HELP YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR ROLE IN THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE? Honestly ...no! Haha! Strictly is the most amazing show to be on BUT it just takes over your whole life for six months. Us pro dancers are working seven days a week. And you have all the extra things on top like, filming VTs, It Takes Two, press, AND being there full time for your celeb! So really I don’t have much time to prepare! I’m actually quite grateful that this year my dance partner lives in Manchester. I can work on my script on the train! WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT PLAYING MILLIE? Millie is a small town girl who comes to a big city (New York) in 1922 to pursue her dreams. She dreams big, and she’s also on the look out to find a wealthy man to marry! I can say I’m quite similar though in real life. I’m a girl from Grimsby (where’s that? I hear you say ...... Exactly!) who dreamt big from being a child,

10 MARCH 2017

moved over to Italy to pursue my dreams. I didn’t marry anyone though, although I think I might have found my real life Jimmy. She’s a strong, determined girl and I can relate to her a lot which is why I cannot wait to get onstage and play her! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT IN THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE? I think my favourite moment of all time is when Millie sings Gimme Gimme. From when I watched the legendary Sutton Foster sing it on YouTube I became COMING: obsessed with it. It’s just such a MON 10 – powerful song which builds and SAT 15 builds and builds and I’m going to APRIL. be looking forward to that every night. ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO VISITING THE ORCHARD THEATRE, DARTFORD? I’m excited about playing The Orchard Theatre for two reasons! One because it’s right near our very own Len Goodman’s dance studio and two because it was born in 1983 and so was I. All the best things were born in that year! We are the same age! n

ENCHANTING CHOREOGRAPHY IN MY FIRST BALLET: CINDERELLA Choreographer George Williamson talks about working on My First Ballet: Cinderella, designed to introduce young children to the wonderful world of ballet. and creating movement that is exciting and different and makes them feel special.

WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO CHOREOGRAPHY? I have a very busy imagination and I love anything creative. As a choreographer you get to explore so many different levels of your creativity and you get to work with other creative people. Most importantly for me I love being in the studio working with dancers

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT MY FIRST BALLET: CINDERELLA? Cinderella is special for me because it was the first one I created in the My First series and it’s lovely to be able to revisit my original choreography. I have formed a brilliant working relationship with the dramaturg Adam Peck over the last 4 years and this was

12 MARCH 2017

WHAT IS IT LIKE CREATING A BALLET THAT’S ESPECIALLY FOR YOUNGER AUDIENCES? When you are little your imagination is so strong and it’s the perfect time to fall in love with it. But classical ballets can sometimes be nearly 3 hours and sometimes children struggle with that length when it’s their first time seeing it. So to guide them into the world we shorten the run time to an hour with an interval. We make the performances as inclusive and accessible as possible by including narration to explain the ballet mime and exaggerate the narrative in the dance a little more to make it clear. We still keep the beautiful costumes, sets and music and of course the dancing is of a high standard.

previously the only ballet in the series we hadn’t worked on together. We are making some changes to the narrative and the structure of the ballet to make the story even more exciting and give the characters more depth. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO KNOW THAT MY FIRST BALLET OFTEN GIVES CHILDREN THEIR FIRST TASTE OF BALLET? I think that My First Ballet is a brilliant idea and it makes me feel incredibly proud that it’s seen by so many people. I love seeing all the kids completely fixated on the dancers and then diving into their own worlds of movement during the interval. I don’t expect every child to start dance lessons after seeing it but I hope that they will ask their parents to see more ballet! n

CAN YOU TELL US HOW YOU MADE THE MOVE FROM DANCING INTO CHOREOGRAPHY? At English National Ballet School, we trained six days a week, focusing mainly on ballet but also taking classes in contemporary dance and other styles. As well as this we also studied academic dance subjects such as dance through history and anatomy. We all took choreography classes too and I made a few ballets that got a lot of great feedback so I started making more ambitious work. I quickly realised that I wanted to focus on choreography, and I spent all my free time working on it with the dancers in the school.

We asked Riverhead jeweller Dominic Walmsley about the latest trends and styles in jewellery at the moment.

A

pparently it’s all about recycling your old unworn jewellery! “I think the biggest change we have noticed over the past year or so is the re-use of old and unworn jewellery, transforming them into new, beautiful and fashionable pieces. Many clients have a drawer or safe filled with pieces of jewellery that are never worn, yet, more often than not, they hold significant sentimental value which leaves them with a dilemma. Our speciality lies in redesigning and combining existing jewellery to create breath-taking new pieces which retain their sentimental value and can be handed down throughout future generations. We love to see what people bring in to us and there is often a hidden gem amongst the pieces and occasionally a discovery of an extremely valuable pieces that was thought of as junk and about to go to the charity shop, (this happened recently)! He still has his workshop in Clerkenwell, London, with three staff, including an apprentice, but has built up a solid base of loyal customers in the Sevenoaks area over the past fifteen years and has become primarily known for his bespoke work. When an occasion requires something truly unique, their vast experience in designing and making jewellery enables them to understand, interpret and deliver the desired piece to the customers exact specification. “One of our favourite redesign commissions was of a

striking dreamcatcher pendant (pictured). The main, central diamond was taken from an unworn piece of antique jewellery provided by our client, placed in a contemporary setting, and complemented by yellow and white rose cut diamonds. The additional stones were set on chains to allow them to move with the body, ensuring they are forever sparkling as much as they possibly can!”

We love it when a customer comes to us with a vision, and can translate it into reality. We love it when a customer comes to us with a vision, and can translate it into reality. The design for the cushion cut sapphire and diamond dress ring (pictured) came into fruition using traditional techniques. Our client wished for a show-stopping sapphire, so we sourced a selection for her to choose from. Once the dream stone had been selected, a design was hand-drawn and painted (pictured) with precision; each facet painstakingly acknowledged with acute detail. From here, the ring will be made in-house in the London studio by Dominic and his awardwinning craftsman and apprentice. After we have taken

your existing jewellery and remade it into a beautiful piece perfectly tailored to you, there may be some stones that are left over. Here at Dominic Walmsley we don’t believe in waste! The white gold and pavé stone earrings (pictured) were brought to life using the remaining stones from a redesign. Our customer was keen that every part of her jewellery was used, but was struggling to see how we could incorporate such a mixture of differently sized and shaped stones. We presented her with a ‘scatter-effect’ design, made in such a way that they are sure to dazzle at all times. Needless to say, she loved the result! We are always excited by the prospect of a new challenge, and are more than happy to discuss any jewellery requirements you may have. Why not come into our Sevenoaks shop and discover the possibilities?

Fancy dress is optional and dogs are very welcome; in fact, why not ask friends and family to sponsor your dog to scamper across the fields? Donna Burden, who walked the last Fun Walk with twenty friends to thank the hospice for caring for her father, explains why everyone should get involved. “We were all anxious about going into a hospice but immediately the level of care and attention from doctors and nurses made my Dad feel safe and that relieved us. Even at the end, when Dad couldn’t walk, they would take the bed out into the garden so that he could feel the sun on his face. There was

BABINGTON’S

NATURE SCHOOL LAUNCH R

Nature School is an opportunity for children to experience nature and the outdoor environment in a safe, secure and hands on way with a trained Nature School leader.

eception aged children from Babington House School were very excited this week, to arrive at school dressed in their nature school clothing. They were the first to experience the new Babington Nature School, launched in the woodland surrounding the School’s Sport Ground on Elmstead Lane in Chislehurst. The children, led by Mrs Groome, enjoyed building an imaginary village out of natural materials, playing safety games and exploring mud – they all got very messy! Nature School builds on each child’s innate skills as each session is designed to accommodate different learning styles developing self-esteem and self-confidence through setting small achievable tasks. The children develop many skills such as perseverance, independence and responsibility. These are all skills that will help them to achieve more when they are back in the classroom.

24 MARCH 2017

A group of pupils will attend Nature School every Thursday, each session lasts around 2 hours with the children enjoying time for games and activities, to sit together in a circle for discussion and a snack in the woods. Babington’s Forestry Club also benefits from the Nature School site, putting up a shelter and helping to clear some of the area – a great way to learn both physical and social behavioural boundaries as well how to respect and care for their local environment. Tim Lello, Headmaster said, “There is as much to learn outside the classroom as there is within it and delivering our curriculum through our outdoor learning programme is an exciting new development for Babington House.” THE DETAILS www.babingtonhouse.com

KITCHEN GUIDE

STONEHAM KITCHENS

WHAT’S HOT IN KITCHEN DESIGN

T

he key to a beautiful kitchen is what happens at the planning stage, and working with a designer to get ideas onto paper. There are endless opportunities as to what you can achieve in your design, whether that’s to do with colour, materials, storage, or the style of lighting anything is possible. But where do these ideas come from?

60 MARCH 2017

At Stoneham Kitchens we are at the forefront of the kitchen design with unrivalled knowledge and inside knowledge when it comes to the latest trends. Adrian Stoneham, Managing Director uncovers what is popular now and for the year ahead. THE INDUSTRIAL LOOK Incorporating different textures into the kitchen is by no means new. The growing trend for the industrial look is a prime example of this. Wood, exposed brick, copper, stone and concrete are all materials that can be mixed beautifully to create an industrial style kitchen for an aesthetic, edgy design. Stone, concrete or a concrete effect are proving to be popular and can be achieved through simple processes using sand and cement with innovative surface finishes. The nature of the material means it can easily be cut and shaped to suit your design requirements.

Concrete comes in various shades of greys or grey/brown tones and can be used for worktops, island counter tops that extend down to the floor and accent units as well as flooring. Alternatively combine with wooden furniture to add warmth and enhance the uniqueness of your kitchen. TIMBER ACCENTS Timber is a timeless classic material in furniture design and remains ever popular. Designers are drawn to the wood’s earthy warmth, which lends itself effortlessly to the broader interior design trend of ‘natural texture’. For an instant, easy update, timber furniture and accessories are a flexible and simple way to tap into the timber trend. This works especially well with monochrome or all-white kitchens, as elements of timber will give welcomed texture and depth to create cosiness. Think bar stools with timber legs, over-sized Macassar wood

add further interest and allure to a design. A clever mix of materials alongside careful planning is essential for the best effect. PAINTED FINISHES There are endless paint shades available for your walls, but the same is also true for your kitchen cabinets. Ideal for period properties and country homes, painted finishes are also becoming popular in contemporary kitchen design. The beauty of a painted kitchen is versatility; you have the entire colour spectrum at your fingertips. This year we are seeing a transition over to the dark side, with strong colours such as Thunder or Anthracite Greys. For a bold look, kit out your kitchen in a shadowy shade, or balance dark colour with accents of colour in trims, feature walls or splashbacks. Understated bright colours, such as Burnt

the fabric of a barstool or lampshade for a focal point in the room. Pops of colour work particularly well with shades of grey that has grown in popularity over the past year and will continue to do so throughout 2017. Yellow is a perfect example for an element of fun and personality when teamed with grey. Letterbox red is also a popular choice that provides a striking contrast when combined with white. If your kitchen design is clean and neutral, add a colourful fridge/freezer or another kitchen accessory to instantly brighten up the space and make a big impact. SMART STORAGE Storage requirements have come a long way with innovations available for any space and any style. It’s all about working with a designer who knows their stuff!

At Stoneham Kitchens we are at the forefront of the kitchen design with unrivalled knowledge and inside knowledge when it comes to the latest trends.

fruit bowls on counter-tops or pendant lights with lumber accents. A more permanent way to incorporate timber is through architectural accents; architraves and window or door frames. A large expanse of beautiful, textured grain provides a softness to the overall aesthetic of a kitchen. Worktops and islands in timber make a striking design feature, or if you’re after an even bolder aesthetic, then timber feature walls create instant impact. You can also mix timber with contrasting materials for a modern design. Silk smooth or painted grained surfaces work perfectly with the natural elegance of timber. Contrast with natural granite or quartz, or even man-made materials such as concrete for a more industrial look. Metals such as steel, copper and bronze

Umber and Bumblebee, can be paired with the majority of darker hues to add pockets of interest. Kitchen islands or cabinetry in a bright shade contrast with the rest of the space, and work well with woods or cool metals – an elegant choice for a modern kitchen. With Stoneham’s bespoke painting service, we can match the paint colour to anything you desire, from an item of furniture to a specific fabric or wallpaper so that you can get your dream colour for your kitchen. SPLASHES OF COLOUR Colour can also be added to your kitchen by incorporating a statement piece to be coloured. This could be anything from a glass splashback, a glass breakfast bar, or match with

A big trend is the integration of extra wide drawers that conceal multiple drawers behind a single frontal; this stops the kitchen looking busy and cluttered, but means you can have, for example, one drawer for cutlery and one for plates in the same area. Curved drawers with bespoke storage dividers are also very popular. Concave drawers with cleverly designed dividers mean that you don’t have to sacrifice any storage space to achieve a striking, curved kitchen design. Consider units with integrated chopping boards and drawers. There is increased demand for concealed integrated appliances and storage units. ‘Pocket doors’ are a simple and sleek means of concealment – doors slide out of the way, out of sight, out of mind, into neat pockets revealing hidden gems behind. Pull-out, integrated waste bins with segregation for your recycling operation are also popular and replace free-standing bins that take up floor space. However, it’s not just about the type of storage you add to your kitchen design but how it is organised to ensure your kitchen functions at its best. At Stoneham Kitchens we use the Dynamic Space® design system to ensure that each area of the kitchen is dedicated to a particular type of storage with zones for; consumable storage, nonconsumable storage, cleaning, preparation and cooking. Each is strategically designed providing access to everything you need to run an efficient kitchen.

Freelands Tiles

DECORATIVE TILES Here at Freelands Tiles we are delighted to offer a collection of brand new ‘encaustic tiles’. This collection has been introduced by Ca Pietra, one of our leading suppliers of natural stone. It is their first ever collection of handmade decorative tiles, made using the ‘encaustic’ technique with cement where the pattern is inlaid into the body of the tile, so that the design and colour remain, even as the tile wears. These differ from ceramic tiles, where the surface pattern is the product of the finishing glaze printed on the surface. Encaustic tiles were first made in Europe in the late 19th century and were used to decorate the floors of palaces in St. Petersburg, Barcelona and grand hallways from Paris to Saigon. Today they can be found in chic bars, restaurants and designer homes in London, Paris and New York. Why not pop along and take a look at this beautiful range of tiles, and consider them for your home?

PLANNING THE PERFECT POOL Enhancing your home with a swimming pool is a rewarding process but for many, it can also be a daunting task as it is unlike many other building projects.

O

rigin have specialised in the design and construction of high quality, luxury indoor and outdoor swimming pools for over 35 years. Here, they give expert advice on the four key steps that must be taken if you are thinking about embarking on this exciting journey

1

TALK TO THE EXPERTS The first stage of any swimming pool installation should be an onsite consultation with your chosen swimming pool builder to discuss your ideas and budget. This is a chance for you to

76 MARCH 2017

outline expected costs of installation and to establish whether planning permission is needed. At Origin, we offer a free on-site consultation with our experienced advisers. We also provide you with the chance to see examples of other projects; being able to visualise your ideas makes the decision process much easier. After this, a second meeting should be arranged giving you a chance to view the company’s initial proposals and provide feedback. You should come away from this meeting with a clear idea of the project length, costs, size, water treatment and energy options. This meeting is particularly

important as it allows you to make sure all of the leisure facilities and features that will suit your home, family and lifestyle are included in the design. Mrs Singh chose Origin to build her pool house and had a clear vision of how it should look: “I really wanted the build to complement the house exterior and I was keen to bring the outdoors in. We also wanted extra features to be incorporated into the design, like an outside seating area. “It was great working with Origin, I felt like my voice was heard throughout the whole process and we really worked in partnership to create my vision.” The final part of any consultation stage is to show you visuals of the project. This is an exciting meeting as you will see your ideas come to life whilst making decisions about finishing touches and any additional extra features.

2

PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE PERFECT POOL Planning permission can take up to eight weeks to be approved, so it’s important to get it right first time. Having an expert on your side will avoid your application being denied and can significantly speed up the process. Swimming pools that normally require planning permission or Building Regulations consent include: • I ndoor swimming pools where the design doesn’t meet Permitted Development criteria •A ll swimming pools on listed premises •P roperties in conservation areas At Origin, we handle the whole swimming pool installation process from design to completion, so our experienced architects are happy to handle this stage of the build for you. Ian Scott, an Origin client, had to seek planning permission for his pool house: “The project was delayed during the planning phase because the local council wanted to carry out an independent assessment on the impact to the trees in the garden. In truth, I wasn’t really affected by this because Origin handled it all. They called a tree specialist and promptly had the garden evaluated. Thankfully, the project wasn’t going to have a major impact and the plans were approved.”

3

DESIGNING YOUR POOL All indoor swimming pools must be built in accordance with British Building Regulations, and special attention needs to be taken with the design of the vapour barrier, dehumidification and materials specification. You don’t need to worry about this stage too much as the architects and technical designers will specify on how this is achieved in your project. Origin is also on hand to discuss energy efficiency

such as solar panels, air source, heat pumps, variable speed pumps and pool covers.

4

ON HAND AT EVERY STAGE During the build, your project manager should conduct regular meetings to update you on progress. This gives you the opportunity to see all of the exciting developments taking place, ask those burning questions and make choices on the finer details, such as tiles and lighting. Hiring separate companies for each element of the build can be stressful, adding complications and unnecessary cost, as it means juggling communication and coordination with different organisations. At Origin, we will take care of every element of the design and build of your pool. This includes liaising with all external parties including local authority, Building Control and utilities companies, to ensure the swimming pool installation runs without a hitch and stays on schedule. THE DETAILS To speak to the Origin experts please contact 01895 453996

Once your project is complete, the only thing left to do is relax and enjoy your new swimming pool! MARCH 2017 77

SPEAKERS OF THE HOUSE The five most popular speaker groups

T

oday having music in every room of your home can be as easy as buying a few wifi speakers and a smartphone. Sadly for many due mainly to budgets, we are forced in to buying one of the many plastic box solutions now available on the market however, there are other options. In my mind I categorise speakers in to five main groups. Visible, Semi-invisible, Invisible (yes you can’t see them), Garden and Stupid Crazy. Denon HEOS1 £139

B&O Beosound 1 £1,085

Bang & Olufsen (each) Celestial £379

Sonance (each) LCR1/ SUR1 £1,083

82 MARCH 2017

VISIBLE SPEAKERS Most people have seen the visible variety, they range from a simple boring plastic box to more elaborate wood finishes through to spun metals, carbon fibre and yes even gold. Some of the more expensive units start to blur the lines between being a pair of speakers or being a piece of art. SEMI-INVISIBLE SPEAKERS With the the rise of the very clean minimalistic home design phenomenon semi-invisible speakers have been massively popular with our energetic Architect friends (for me minimalistic is clearing the kids rubbish out of the way and trying not to trip over the dog on the way to the bathroom). But I digress, the way to make speakers semi-invisible is to bury them as much as possible in to ceilings or walls. sometimes called flush speakers all that usually remains to be seen is a white metal grill, flush with the wall or ceiling. INVISIBLE SPEAKERS Invisible speakers are becoming more and more popular (how do you describe an invisible speaker?). The principle is to cut a hole in your wall or ceiling, install a specially designed flat panel, plaster over it and paint. The flat panel then uses its self and the the surrounding wall to transmit the sound (this can be good and bad). In the past to me these types of speakers haven’t sounded particularly crisp but as the

technology advances so does the quality. Amina (an invisible speaker manufacture) have said that their new Edge speakers are now approaching THX standards. That’s very good. GARDEN SPEAKERS Garden speakers are great and I love the ideas people come up with to hide them. You can be boring and just mount waterproof box speakers to an outside wall but I love the speakers which are disguised as rocks or mounted in the bottom of plant pots. The latest systems we see use multiple small speakers spread throughout flower beds linked to one large sub-woofer buried in the ground. Although the Sub-Woofer looks like a small dustbin, all that remains to be seen once installed is what looks like a large mushroom ready for your garden elf to sit on. you could be fooled into thinking that the military have a hand in designing some of these speakers as they take it to the next level when it comes to camouflage. STUPID CRAZY SPEAKERS Lastly we look at stupid crazy. From speakers suspended in glass cabinets to ones which are made of Gold worth over £5 million. Speakers can captivate our hearts over design and sound. Last year Bang and Olufsen released the BeoLab 90’s. Priced at a reasonable £57,295 a pair, these actually comprise of 36 separate amplifiers and speakers in what looks like two normal-ish speaker cabinets. At just 16,200watts maximum peak output (thats enough to fill a small concert hall) and controlled from your iPhone they can be set for a single perfect listing position (narrow mode), a slightly wider listening area like your living room sofa (wide mode) or a whole room (omni mode). BERRY BAKES BACK Viewers were left bereft when Mary Berry announced she wouldn’t be following The Great British Bake Off’s move to Channel 4.

B

ut fear not, fans - five months on and the Somerset-born cook, whose final GBBO hurrah came in the form of a National Television Award for Best TV Judge earlier this year, is back with a new BBC Two TV series and accompanying cookbook, Mary Berry Everyday, celebrating items which have formed the cornerstone of her cooking over six decades. “I was thinking about, as the title suggests, the everyday,” explains Berry 81, whose culinary career started with training, aged 21, at Le Cordon Bleu school, France. “Everyday can be just with the family, it can mean having friends around, it can be a special occasion.” While the six-part series will follow Berry as she travels to Scotland to enjoy the best of their everyday larder; tries her hand at bee keeping; and teaches her own grand-daughter to milk a goat and make cheese,

94 MARCH 2017

the tie-in tome will document her own kitchen creations (120, to be exact), alongside top tricks and tips. With everything from hearty and wholesome, to indulgent and easy crowd-pleasers on the menu, it’s a catalogue that’s sure to please. “All the recipes are tried out at home,” notes the star, who reveals she welcomes constructive criticism from her tight-knit family (Berry often cooks for her husband, Paul Hunnings, and their children and grandchildren). “The children might say, ‘Oh yuck’, or someone may say, ‘That takes too long to do’, and those don’t go in the book,” she confides. “But I make sure there aren’t too many of those! “It’s important not to have too many ingredients or pieces of equipment,” she adds. “I want to inspire people to cook, and I do think a book is a nice thing to have. I’m very lucky that people trust me and that they have a go.”

With more than 70 titles under her belt, it’s safe to say people do trust Berry - and fans will be pleased to hear she isn’t hanging up her apron strings any time soon. “I’m not stepping back; I am doing different things,” Berry insists, resolute in her choice to keep busy. “Maybe Mel, Sue and I will get down to something...” she adds cryptically (the Bake Off co-presenters also decided to quit the popular series when the shock channel switch was announced), though it’s unlikely to happen overnight. “I’ve got a new series on country houses coming up, I’ll be doing a bit at Chelsea [Flower Show] I expect, and I’ll be doing a new series for 2018,” lists Berry. “Don’t worry, I won’t be idle.” THE DETAILS Mary Berry Everyday by Mary Berry, photography by Georgia Glynn Smith, is published by BBC Books, priced £26.
