e asked Joanne a bit about her experience in musical theatre, ahead of the shows visit to The Churchill Theatre in June.
WE OBVIOUSLY KNOW YOU BEST FOR YOUR DANCING, WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE IN ACTING AND SINGING? When I was younger I always wanted to do musical theatre. I just adored the music, the stories told through the songs, and loved watching them. I would always sing as singing is a big thing for me. I do it all the time and strangely enough, when I feel scared I sing!!! So I had singing and acting lessons as a child alongside my dancing. WILL YOUR EXPERIENCE IN STRICTLY COME DANCING HELP YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR ROLE IN THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE? Honestly ...no! Haha! Strictly is the most amazing show to be on BUT it just takes over your whole life for six months. Us pro dancers are working seven days a week. And you have all the extra things on top like, filming VTs, It Takes Two, press, AND being there full time

Millie is a small town girl who comes to a big city (New York) in 1922 to pursue her dreams. She dreams big, and she’s also on the look out to find a wealthy man to marry! I can say I’m quite similar though in real life. I’m a girl from Grimsby (where’s that? I hear you say ...... Exactly!) who dreamt big from being a child, moved over to Italy to pursue my dreams. I

didn’t marry anyone though, although I think I might have found my real life Jimmy. She’s a strong, determined girl and I can relate to her a lot which is why I cannot wait to get onstage and play her! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT IN THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE? I think my favourite moment of all time is when Millie sings Gimme Gimme. From when I watched the legendary Sutton Foster sing it on YouTube I became obsessed with it. It’s just such a powerful song which builds and builds and builds and I’m going to be looking forward to that every night. THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS You’ve read the best-selling book and seen the blockbuster film – now Northern Ballet tells the compelling story of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas through dance for the first time. This new ballet tours to Bromley Churchill Theatre on 16 & 17 June. Divided by a barbed wire fence, Bruno doesn’t understand anything about where Shmuel lives, or who he is. To him, he’s just a new friend – a boy wearing a pair of striped pyjamas. As this unlikely friendship blossoms against the backdrop of the unthinkable events of World War II, Bruno’s childlike curiosity leads this poignant story to a devastating conclusion. As one of the UK’s leading ballet companies, Northern Ballet is renowned for creating original productions inspired by literature, popular culture and the classics with recent titles including Jane Eyre and 1984. We caught up with the choreographer of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Daniel de Andrade, to find out more.
Why did you choose to adapt The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas?
When I read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas my connection with the story was immediate as a strong and original way to approach this sensitive subject. This heartwrenching story inspired me with a sense of commitment to tell this story through dance.

How have you approached the story?
The subject matter of this story is sensitive and worthy of much respect, and we have placed a high level of importance on not over-romanticising it in any way. Similarly to the book our ballet is told from Bruno’s perspective, although as dance is so visual we do show more of the reality of some of the tragic historical events of the period than what Bruno’s innocent mind describes in the book.
What can you tell us about the music, costumes and sets? I invited Gary Yershon to compose a new musical score which will be played live by

Northern Ballet Sinfonia at every performance. Gary’s music has been a true gift in helping us to create the many different characters and environments of this ballet. Designer Mark Bailey has created faithful costumes and visually striking sets, reflecting the period and mood of the ballet perfectly.

How does it feel to be celebrating your 70th year in the business?
[Laughs] It feels like nothing. I started out as a 14-year-old boy actor and I’ve never gotten up any day of my life over the last 70 years and not looked forward to when I’ll be in a theatre, rehearsing, directing, performing or whatever. I love it.
Why did you decide to start the celebrations with an updated version of Out Of Order?
How does it feel when you’re sat in a theatre listening to audiences roar with laughter at something you’ve written?

What I have been doing fairly recently is encouraging some young producers because that’s what we need. Tom O’Connell is one of those and he learned that I’d been in the business for 70 years so he came up with the idea of doing one of my plays. We discussed which one and I do have a very soft spot for Out Of Order. Oftentimes if I’m not appearing in one of the plays and I’m standing at the back as a director, to watch people throw their heads back and nudge each other and point at the stage and laugh is wonderful.
Why do you have such a soft spot for Out Of Order? Of all the plays, it’s really complicated stage business wise. All the plays have got lots of funny business in them, but Out Of Order has even more than usual. I won’t go into too many details about the story but there is

a dead body in it, there’s a window that keeps crashing down and as usual there are three doors that keep opening and closing. And of all the plays, the choreography of this one is the most complicated.
How do you hope audiences will feel when they leave the theatre at the end of Out Of Order? That they’ve had the most wonderful evening. Something I’ve done with every play, which only a few years I discovered was how all the Greek plays were written, is that they are continuous action. They start off at a particular time and the length of time the audience is in the theatre is the length of the story. You lead up to the end of Act One with a nice, funny, dramatic moment, the curtain comes down, then Act Two starts off at the same moment. It means you don’t have to have the actors sort of explaining, via
It’s the most wonderful thing. I’ll never forget when we first did Run For Your Wife at the Shaftesbury Theatre. I wasn’t there for a Saturday night performance and after the performance Richard Briers, who was playing the lead, rang me up and said ‘It was terrible!’ because at a certain moment the audience just wouldn’t stop laughing. That’s the thing with these plays – dealing with the laughs. Luckily one surrounds oneself with actors who know how to deal with that.

One or two of my productions have been staged in Dartford, with other people directing, so I’ve been along to see them and the audiences there are wonderful.

BISHOP CHALLONER New Outdoor Learning Environment

ishop Challoner is delighted with its new infant playground recently completed in October 2016, with further features added over the Easter break. Like our forest school, it has been created in a safe, fenced area and contains various play equipment and educational games, all specifically designed for the younger pupils in School to foster and enhance their learning. Paula Anderson, Headteacher, emphasised, ‘We want our children to be happy and to have fun by encompassing many things and the outdoor play certainly provides an important environment to foster brain development, motor skills, and social and cognitive development.’ There is opportunity at break and lunchtime for the children to play in any way they choose, whether it be alone or with others supported by a wide range of structures and spaces. The playground maximises opportunities for the children to interact, explore, enrich, build and to learn from their peers. They learn to negotiate, compromise, work together, and also to control themselves and tolerate and respect each other. The tractor and castle promote role play and social play, providing children with places to congregate and communicate. The introduction of a canopy affords the opportunity to integrate the outdoors with the indoor classroom with one sense of place and identity. This enables children to move freely back and forth between the inside and outside encouraging them to experiment with autonomy and independence. We were warmly welcomed at the door and shown to our table. All of the staff were extremely friendly, helpful, and clearly had a passion for the food being produced and where the dishes came from.

Joy kitchen offer a selection of South East Asian dishes. We opted for a mixed starter platter to share which included succulent chicken and prawn satay, BBQ spare ribs, crispy prawn sesame rolls, Thai fish cakes and a sweet chilli and satay dipping sauce. For main, we were advised to try a traditional Indonesian dish called Kway Teow Goreng - wok fried flat rice noodles which were incredibly moreish, with egg, chilli, soy sauce, bean sprouts, spring onion and large, juicy king prawns. We

were also advised to try the beef rendang - a slow cooked dish with a nice spicy kick, and deep rich sauce of coconut, galengal and lemon grass sauce, served with rice. We were so full that we couldn’t fit in a dessert, however on our next visit we’ll definitely be trying the Indonesian pineapple crumbly tart!

There were a great selection of juices available - the lychee and coconut water with lime, soda, and lychee fruit pieces was really refreshing, and there were also a wide selection of teas, Asian beers, and world wines.
