Ahead of the Broadway and West End smash-hit Musical Hairspray coming to The Orchard Theatre in August, we caught up with Brenda Edwards about this fun-filled show. Since reaching the semi-finals in The X Factor in 2005, Brenda has taken on some of musical theatre’s most iconic roles including Chicago’s Mama Morton, Pearl Pastor in Carmen Jones and Killer Queen in We Will Rock You.

What is one of your fondest memories of being on stage?

One of my fondest memories was when the whole cast had the pleasure of meeting Marc Shaiman (Tony & Grammy Award-winning Hairspray Composer) when he came to see one of our performances and getting to listen to him telling us about his journey of writing these amazing songs!

And also witnessing the audience’s excitement when they’re watching the show.

Tell us a little about your character Motormouth Maybelle.

Motormouth is sassy and strong, but friendly! She owns a record shop “Motormouth Records” and is the mother of Seaweed and Little Inez. She hosts a show once a month on the local teenage dance show ‘The Corny Collins Show’ called “Negro Day.”

Do you have a favourite song in Hairspray?

I love all the songs in the show but there is

something about the energy of You Can’t Stop the Beat, as it’s so much fun to perform with all the cast on stage.

Ahead of this classic Miss Marple mystery coming to The Orchard Theatre in Dartford this August, we interviewed Louise Jameson (Miss Marple) and Janet Dibley (Letitia Blacklock) about their experience working on an Agatha Christie thriller.

What was it that attracted you to the production of Agatha Christie’s A Murder Is Announced?

Pratts Bottom Primary School

Last Friday evening saw the chocolate box village of Pratts Bottom transformed into a Music Festival Extravaganza!

T

he primary school hosted its first ever event of this kind called ‘Prattstock’. The festival saw a huge main stage marquee where the 80 strong ‘Rock Choir’ performed some highly popular sing-a-long tunes followed by local singers and guitarists Isabella and Gemma as well as a Barber Shop Quartet, who were very recent finalists in the National Acapella singing competition held on the Isle of Wight! Every act gave up their time and talent totally free of charge to support the school’s (much needed) fund raising event. The year 6 pupils, who will

parlour where delectable refreshments could be inexpensively purchased. The head teacher, Mrs Debbie Smith said “The halloumi and mushroom burger was delicious, perfectly washed down with a chilled glass of prosecco – what a treat!”

Neighbours, school governors and the village fete committee were all invited as special guests to join in the fun as a thank you for all they do to support the school throughout the year, Mr Peter Hudson OBE (Chair of Governors) summed up the evening in one word

Amazing what a small school such as ourselves can put on..... a real pleasure to be part of it. be leaving the school in July, put on a stellar performance of ‘Uptown Funk’ by the uber cool Bruno Mars complete with synchronised dance moves – the audience were blown away!

Elizabeth and James, two of the school’s Team Captains said, “It was so much fun, a real family atmosphere – we think it should become an annual tradition!”

All this was interspersed with some groovy tunes from local DJ Jack Holloway, who frequently and most generously supports the school and many other local charitable organisations.

Elsewhere in this unique and stunning setting were gazebos selling a vast array of colourful wares in the ‘Festival Bazaar’, the pick ‘n’ mix sweetie cones, face-painting, glittery tattoos and hair braiding were popular attractions with the young and old alike. One local resident, Brenda Johnson aged 70, said, “I have never had my face painted before and I loved it so much I didn’t want to take it off at bedtime!”

The event has raised £1200 towards school funds and that money will be put to excellent use replenishing the children’s reading books which are in urgent need of updating, amongst the school’s many other exciting and important projects.

After the event a parent kindly emailed the Head Teacher and said “Just such an up lifting experience tonight.

Amazing what a small school such as ourselves can put on..... a real pleasure to be part of it.”

The staff and governors of Pratts Bottom Primary School would like to extend their deepest gratitude to everyone that donated their time, lent their equipment, put up with the influx of parked cars, attended the function and spent their pocket money at this very special event, which the school certainly hope to repeat in the future.

H WILLIAMS AND ASSOCIATES At the gate way to Petts Wood East, there has been a dental surgery operating since the 1930’s. Almost a century later, the plot continues to be occupied by a modern, well established dental practice, offering excellent treatments for a growing number of patients.

W

e caught up with owner Heather Williams who is proud to be celebrating 20 years since taking over the practice in 1997.

Heather initially joined the practice as a partner in 1992 full time and then became owner on April 30th, 1997 when Tony Blair was elected with a landslide victory!

(So quite a memorable date) Since then Heather has seen many changes. The surgery began by expanding from 2 surgeries to 3; this meant extending the back of the practice, adding a red mahogany reception desk and winning an award for altering the shop front with cutting edge design and paint!

A huge asset to this local business is the combined years of experience and dedication; many of the staff have been with the practice for 20 years, including one of the four partners, Dental Surgeon Sarah Ide and Dental Nurse, Ann Goodbun.

Over the years, Heather told us that fundamentally the dental care has remained the same; dental decay still affects teeth and there is still gum disease but now these are totally preventable. Heather tries to prevent decay and is passionate about patients seeing the hygienist. In fact, Heather now employs a hygienist every day of the week!

Heather admits to being super proud of patients coming regularly and introducing dental payment plans which help patients to budget monthly, this has been very successful.

Heather says, a healthier mouth means a healthier body.

Technology has of course changed over the last 20 years with advances with dental drills that are faster and much quieter. Also, fibre optic lights make it much easier to see in patients mouths! In fact, digital x-rays can be produced immediately, they used to be very small but can now be seen on a large TV screen and emailed to other dentists.

The installation of a computer system in 2003 was a lot of work, especially as Heather had introduced an efficient

paper system for patients notes. However, the investment has been worthwhile as digital notes can be sent to other dentists.

In fact the Computer system has been completely renewed this year - helping ensure the Practice is protected against malicious cyber attack. Gone are the days of just an appointment book and rubber!

Heather stresses how important it is to put patients first and offer them the best possible choices. This was certainly evident as many of her patients joined in their party to celebrate their 20th Anniversary.

We visited early on a Saturday when the restaurant was set up ready for a fully booked evening. There were a mix of couples, families and large groups of friends celebrating birthdays and anniversaries.

Service

The service was friendly and faultless. From the moment we arrived, we were advised on the food and drinks menu’s, and made to feel relaxed and not rushed at all. The food was delivered at a nice pace, and our drinks topped up throughout the evening.

Food

We opted for one of their set menu’s - the ‘Lobster feast’ to share between two people.

Generous portions, beautifully balanced dishes, and wonderfully presented. To start, we had the salt and chilli prawns and squid - a good crunch to the batter, and tender squid and prawns with lots of flavour from the spring onions and chilli. We were then presented with a whole lobster which had been cracked, ready to eat by the Chef, and cooked in a zingy ginger and spring onion sauce. The lobster was extremely fresh, and fantastic quality. To follow were four additional dishes - king prawns in

fresh asparagus. garlic pak choi, special seafood rice, and steamed, tender, sweet seabass with ginger and spring onion in a soy dressing. All were delicious and all went so well together.

To finish the meal, we shared banana fritters in a crunchy sesame toffee batter, flambeed in Cointreau and served with vanilla ice cream heaven on a plate.

Drink

A well stocked bar with beers and spirits, as well as a great wine menu. We opted for the New Zealand Sauvignon blanc, which complimented the lobster and the zing of the ginger.
