T

he school was delighted to meet all the Compliance standards with no action points at its recent inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The Quality of Pupils’ Academic and other Achievements has been graded as ‘Good’ and the Quality of the Pupils’ Personal Development has been graded as ‘Excellent’. “Pupils’ personal commitment to the school and the local community is very strong; they are beacons for the school in the community”. (ISI 2016) In our positive learning environment, high standards and expectations are set at every level. Staff work closely with the pupils within one establishment, ensuring a successful transition between the different stages in their education. Pupils are able to be challenged, take risks and feel comfortable through consistent, well-planned teaching by staff who know them. We are able to track and monitor their progress and provide on-going support to ensure each pupil reaches their full potential. In our all through school, high quality relationships exist between staff and pupils embodying mutual respect, care, freedom to communicate and support in a school with a nurturing Catholic ethos. We encourage pupil interaction through collaborative activities across Key Stages and provide opportunity for sixth form students to take responsibility for younger children as role models. This enables them to relate well to others and allows them to observe patterns of behaviour

to which they can aspire. Our excellent pastoral care and discipline allows the pupils to be nurtured enabling qualities of trust, empathy and resilience to develop. Our well established Able Gifted and Talented programme spans both the junior and senior school accommodating a wider breadth of activities for the Gifted and Talented pupils. Whole school activities involve fund-raising events and House activities from nursery through to sixth form. Public examination results at Bishop Challoner have continued to improve and last year, 92% of pupils achieved at least 5 A*- C grades at GCSE, with Biology, Chemistry, Latin and Spanish scoring 100% A*-C grades. Last year our students gained 82% A*-C grades at A Level, with seven subjects achieving 100% A*-C, namely Chemistry, Dance, French, History, Geography, Mathematics and Physics. 100% A* /B grades were gained in Physics, Dance and French. The school received the highest grade possible in all categories and across every age group which, under the new Inspection Framework, is described as ‘Excellent’.

n November 2016, Babington House School had an Educational Quality and Compliance Inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). The school received the highest grade possible in all categories and across every age group which, under the new Inspection Framework, is described as ‘Excellent’. This is very rare indeed particularly for an all through school from 3 to 18 years. Babington could not have done better and such a result from a more robust inspection framework is a remarkable achievement for the school community. The report makes very positive reading and can be found on the school website www.babingtonhouse.com.

he percentage of students who attained the benchmark of A*-C grades in GCSE English and Maths was 81%, an outstanding achievement and testament to the hard work of students and staff alike. As an independent school we have the ability to tailor a curriculum to an individual’s strengths and interests thereby enabling students to follow a course of study which maximises success. We are also one of the top performing schools in the County at A level and each year our students progress to a wide range of destinations which regularly include Russell Group universities. These excellent exam results are indicative of an educational curriculum which stimulates and challenges students of all abilities and key to this are learning opportunities outside the classroom. We explore ways of enhancing class based teaching and whilst this can be within the school’s beautiful grounds, often study groups will travel further afield.

18 FEBRUARY 2017

Last term students travelled across the Channel to visit a number of historic battlefields. Year 9 and GCSE Historians had studied World War 1 so the visit to Ypres and the Somme brought home the impact of warfare on the landscape and the lives of the people affected. Laying a wreath at the Menin Gate during the moving Last Post ceremony is something which will always stay with the students. This year the itinerary was extended to include the sites of two other historic battles– Agincourt and Waterloo as nothing can bring History alive like seeing the actual places where the events took place. Another recent trip was to The Gielgud Theatre in London to see Having fun “The Curious Coincidence of Maths at Kidzania in the Day Time”, an inspirational and interactive Maths lecture. Not only did the show explore mathematical concepts from the bestselling novel and play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, students also discovered the maths ideas that influenced the music, set design and incredible visual effects of the West End production. In contrast Year 8 and 9 students were able to explore a wide range of career options this month on a visit to Kidzania in London. This innovative concept features a city built to scale for children complete with buildings, paved streets, vehicles, a functioning economy, and a wide range of businesses and services. Real life role play blending learning and reality with entertainment was an unusual and interesting experience for the students. A varied programme of educational trips serves to widen students’ horizons and prepare them for life beyond school. This combined, with quality teaching on a daily basis, is a winning formula for a successful education. For more information visit our Open Day on 18th March or call to arrange a personal tour. EMBRACING A GROWTH MINDSET Sevenoaks Prep is building upon its strong values by embracing a Growth Mindset approach to personal development.

Y

our mindset is that little voice in your head that directs your thoughts. It is created by all the beliefs you have about life and the people in your life, shaped by the events in your life and how you were taught to interpret them by the people around you. For example, if you failed a maths test in school did you say “I’m not good at maths” or did you say “If I work harder, I can do better”? If you failed to score a goal, did you say to yourself “I can’t play this game” or did you say “I’m going to keep practicing until I score”? “Natural talent can only take you so far. It might give a person a head start but in the end, natural talent is rarely enough to keep a person successful over

20 FEBRUARY 2017

the long haul. In the long run, work and effort play a more important role in success.” At Sevenoaks Prep, we are conscious of the importance of a Growth Mindset in everything we do. We value the ability to embrace challenges by not being afraid of failure and using any set back to stretch and grow. We want our pupils to believe that their abilities change depending on the effort they put into changing them and that anything is achievable if the effort is put in. Their sense of self-worth should come from the process of growth and learning and not from external sources. Luke Harrison, Headmaster, says “We see great value in empowering our pupils through a Growth Mindset vocabulary, which complements our Way Of Life values and strengthens our ethos. We are proud of the resilience, self-confidence and success of our pupils.”.

We value the ability to embrace challenges by not being afraid of failure and using any set back to stretch and grow. THE DETAILS www.theprep.org.uk

BREASIDE PREPARATORY SCHOOL

OUTSTANDING EDUCATION - EXCELLENT RESULTS Breaside Preparatory School, located in Bromley, Kent, prepares pupils from 21/2 to 11 years for both Grammar and Independent Senior Schools in a caring and nurturing environment.

W

e are ranked ‘Outstanding’ in all measures by the School Inspection Service in October 2014, continuing from our Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ awarded in 2011. Once again, SATs and 11+ entry results for 2016 were outstanding, with 100% of Year 6 pupils gaining their first choice at Senior School. 50% of pupils received scholarships to Independent Senior Schools which is a potential saving of £35,000 per child over their secondary school life. Parents are given guidance on the schools that we recommend for their children throughout their time at Breaside and we pride ourselves on getting the children into the right school for them as individuals. SHOULD I CHOOSE BREASIDE PREPARATORY SCHOOL FOR MY CHILD? Do they really offer more than a local primary school? The answer to both of these questions is a resounding ‘Yes’. As their name suggests, the role of preparatory schools is to prepare your child for their entrance into senior education, so don’t be surprised to see a plethora of subjects on the curriculum. Your child will experience a well rounded education albeit in a nurturing environment. Classes are significantly smaller, allowing all pupils to progress. At the same time, this allows all staff to know their pupils

22 FEBRUARY 2017

and therefore offer a bespoke curriculum. Preparatory schools provide a wealth of opportunity for your child both academically and pastorally. Self confidence is encouraged and children are constantly motivated to enjoy and embrace all the opportunities that arise within this positive learning environment. The academic curriculum within a preparatory school is clearly of the utmost importance. Throughout your child’s time at their preparatory school, they will be prepared for the common entrance and scholarship tests and preparatory schools’ academic credentials are renowned. If the above isn’t enough to tempt you, consider the other aspects of a stimulating, all-round education. Your child will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of music, playing in an orchestra or participating in the choir. Peripatetic teachers within a preparatory school can introduce your child to a wealth of instruments, regardless of ability. Drama is also extensive with children as young as 3 taking part in plays. Within the encouraging atmosphere of a preparatory school, this can only help to aid your child’s confidence. Let’s not forget the range of sporting events that your child can take part in. Children in a preparatory school experience a range of sports, including rugby, hockey, swimming and cricket. Should you choose a preparatory school for your child? Well, if you want to give them the best possible start in life, then the answer has to be yes. The investment will pay off as you see your child blossom into a well rounded, self confident, individual, ready to face the world! Q&A

WITH VICTORIA YEATES

Ahead of her visit to The Orchard Theatre in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, we asked Call The Midwife’s Victoria Yeates about her role.

WHAT INTERESTED YOU ABOUT THE CRUCIBLE PRODUCTION? I’ve always wanted to do The Crucible as I think it’s one of the best plays ever written and have always wanted to play Elizabeth Proctor. WHAT TYPE OF AUDIENCE WILL ENJOY THIS SHOW? I think this play has a very wide appeal. It’s famously political but then also touches on a very personal and emotional level. I think that’s its’ power; the ability to touch on every level so it can connect with each audience member in the way they need.

HOW WILL THE PLAY MAKE AUDIENCES THINK AND FEEL? The audience will be thinking how timely this play is. I think it shows so clearly how hysteria and perhaps ‘sound bite’ politics can take us over. How false ideas can run rampant with very negative consequences.

HOW WILL THIS PRODUCTION OF THE CRUCIBLE BRING TUE 14 SOMETHING NEW TO THE STORY? – SAT 18 I think the play being done now in our current H C R A M ‘post-truth’ climate will of-course add something completely different to its meaning. I have always loved Brecht, and believe theatre is here to make a difference, make people think and question and to very actively engage in a conversation with the audience. I also like the idea of us WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF BRINGING all being on stage throughout, that we are all in this together. YOUR CHARACTER TO LIFE? That it’s a mutual investigation with us and the audience on I think that Elizabeth is an incredible character and someone the ideas presented, not necessarily didactic but more opening I have always wanted to play. I think it will be a challenge up a discourse. not letting her appear too cold even though at first there is distance between her and John. I want the audience to IF SOMEONE WAS GOING TO MAKE YOUR LIFE understand why and empathise with her. I think we have all INTO A MOVIE, WHO WOULD PLAY YOU? shut off from people, Wow....errr Jessica Chastain?! Hysterical concept to think and then hopefully about! admire the strength it takes for her to open up to John, stand by him and stay true to her values. DO YOU SHARE SIMILARITIES WITH ELIZABETH PROCTOR? I hope I share some of her strength and integrity. However I am pretty gregarious and find it easy to express love. I’m more bouncy!!

It might sound like a cliché, but there are so many great moments in the show, that it’s impossible to pick just one. It’s full of great music and humour, but also has real heart. We’ve had so much fun putting the show together - it’s been the happiest rehearsal process I’ve ever experienced. The show is so enjoyable, the cast are having a fantastic time and I’m sure audiences will too. WHAT CAN DARTFORD AUDIENCES EXPECT? A brilliant night out. The perfect romantic comedy with a pop score, electric dancing and a stellar cast.

DIRTY DANCING’S LEWIS GRIFFITHS SHARES HIS FITNESS AND WELLBEING TIPS 31-year-old Lewis Griffiths plays Johnny Castle in the touring stage production of Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story on Stage. Fitness journalist Lucy Fry caught up with him at Fitness First, Tottenham Court Road, where he revealed his workout regime, his favourite foods, and why he believes in professional Karma… JOHNNY CASTLE IS AN ICONIC ROLE. DO YOU FEEL THE PRESSURE TO LOOK A CERTAIN WAY? Not really. My predecessor started off in the role with a naturally slender physique, but by the time he left he’d got a much sturdier frame and bulked up, just from playing Johnny. Besides, it’s not so much about how I look - I’m more concerned with developing the strength and stamina that I’ll need for the show.

FROM TUE 7 – SAT 11 MARCH

HOW DO YOU WARM UP FOR A SHOW? I start with shoulder rolls and chest stretches before moving on to my legs. I’ll always do quadricep and hamstring stretches, and as many ankle rolls as I can to help mobilise the joint. I stretch out the Achilles too, and the arches in my feet. Everything from the waist down needs to be limber because the entire show involves bent legs, hip rolls and thrusts - it’s dirty dancing after all, you can’t do it with locked knees and straight legs!

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP HEALTH AND WELLBEING TIPS? Beyond sleep, water and green veggies, I’m a fan of wheatgrass. I’ve heard one small shot of wheatgrass is the equivalent of a kilo of green vegetables, so I recently started taking them. The results are amazing: I’m more energised and have better skin. Also massage is a must for me - sometimes I’m so tight I can barely stretch; I need a professional to loosen it off and remove the lactic acid. I’ve had a couple of reflexology treat-ments recently too and I practice Tai Chi about once a week. HOW DO YOU KEEP FIT WHEN BETWEEN JOBS? Not brilliantly… When I’m on a job I go full throttle and when I’ve finished I let go a bit. Before Dirty Dancing I was eating too much chocolate and not going to the gym. I had just four weeks before rehearsals to wake my body up so started doing something every day, be it five-aside football, weightlifting or jogging.

“When I’m on a job I go full throttle and when I’ve finished I let go a bit.”

WHAT’S YOUR USUAL GYM ROUTINE? I tend to do six exercises, each for three sets of twelve repetitions (six sets if I’m using light weights) in a circuit format: back squat, barbell push press, bicep curl, weighted lunges, tricep dips and chest flyes. To finish off I might throw in some handstand press ups, or pistol squats, often including some backbending to help further strengthen my core. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’D NEVER DO IN THE GYM? Yeah - that static machine where you sit and squeeze your thighs together [the adductor machine]! It’s awful, just strains your groin!

44 FEBRUARY 2017

DO YOU EXERCISE BETWEEN SHOWS? Not much - the show itself is physically intense when my engine is running I’d like to keep it ticking over so if I’m doing both a matinee and evening show then between the two I’ll jog to a local gym and do some very light weights.

WHAT ABOUT FOOD? DO YOU FOLLOW A SPECIAL DIET? Not strictly, no. The biggest issue I have when I’m working is keeping weight on! On the last job I did we were all in suits and the wardrobe mistress kept telling me off for losing too much weight! My metabolism was so ramped up from all the movement that I had to supplement my diet with protein and mass building products. In terms of meals, I always force myself to eat breakfast, something like porridge, blueberries and banana on Weetabix, or marmite on toast with a green tea. If I have time to cook it’s scrambled or poached eggs on toast with spinach and asparagus. When I’m rehearsing or performing? I’d like to say I snack on dried fruit and nuts but I’d usually put a bar of chocolate in there because I’m a chocaholic. Lunch is usually whatever I can grab - nothing too heavy - and for dinner I often eat steak - medium rare with loads of English mustard.

THE DETAILS Dirty Dancing comes to The Churchill Theatre Bromley from Tue 7 – Sat 11 March. Best Availability Tue – Thu.

MORSO STOVE

A Morso stove is so much more than simply a stove, it quickly becomes the heart of your home. Combing timeless elegance with traditional craftsmanship and quality, it cannot be beaten.

A

s a family business in the trade for many years we decided to move away from the standard ‘stove showroom’, with rows and rows of black boxes to choose from, restricted brand knowledge and drastic differences in quality we believe that Morso stoves need and deserve to stand centre stage. Our small but well equipped showroom displays everything from a small but mighty inset model that can fit a standard sized opening in your property to a beautiful free-standing cylinder model with side glass to view from every angle, perfect for kitchen diners. With gas and oil prices steadily rising wood burning stoves are becoming essential for home owners, and aside from purchase and installation costs they will begin saving you money right away. It is encouraged to heat the room you are in, many of us waste money on the central heating to warm a house when in reality we spend most of our time in only a one or two rooms. And what could be better on a cold, dull day than the crackle of a real log fire, flickering flames and a warm cosy room? We pride ourselves on good customer service and installations tailored to your specific requirements, with a free

survey we can assess the condition and suitability of your existing chimney or design a bespoke flue system if you do not have one, there is almost always an option for a wood burning stove, sometimes where you would have never imagined it We have a large selection of ‘Defra Approved’ models, this means even in a smoke controlled area you can burn logs on one of the approved models. Morso have been making cast iron wood burning stoves for a very long time, over 150 years now. Danish technology and design producing modern yet timeless models that are loved as a piece of furniture rather than just an appliance. When you choose a Morso woodburner, you make a choice for life. We truly believe the brand speaks for itself and we are proud to provide these superbly manufactured, elegant, fuel efficient and environmentally friendly castiron stoves. Come and visit our showroom today, let Morso make the difference in your home. THE DETAILS Morso Fires Ltd, 180 Petts Wood Road, Greater London BR5 1LG. DIAMOND SHUTTERS:

TIMELESS STYLE AND VERSATILITY ‘Will shutters provide enough light when they are open?’, ‘My windows are not perfect squares – can I still have shutters?’ ‘Will shutters improve the look of my windows’? ‘Are shutters really expensive?’ These are just some of the questions our customers ask us when they are thinking of having shutters installed in their homes

T

he fact is that bespoke window shutters are the perfect alternative to blinds and curtains. They provide increased privacy, ventilation and light control, noise reduction and improved insulation.

In addition, they are durable and will last many years without needing to be replaced or repainted so are economically more viable over a long period of time. CHOICES With a wide range of styles, materials and colours to suit all types of windows, the choice of shutters is endless. Many properties have beautiful original windows that look gorgeous but can be an unusual shape and size. Opting for bespoke shutters, which can be made to fit any type of window shape is a fantastic way to accentuate the lovely features. White is still a firm favourite but we are starting to see a trend towards colours – in particular, variations on grey, which is currently a very popular choice!

LIGHT AND PRIVACY Shutters are the definitive way to control light, allowing you to effectively close off the window and then filter the light in as you choose. Depending on the type of 5-YEAR E shutter you decide on, you can operate the top half GUARANTE R independently from the bottom half. This provides ON ALL OU even better light control. SHUTTERS. Ideal for those who want privacy without sacrificing valuable daylight. Louvres can be angled to the sun’s position, and when shut, they’re a great way to keep out prying eyes and therefore, a good security option. Perfect if your house is on a busy street. At Diamond Shutters, we have the expertise and knowledge, gained over our 10 years of experience to provide a second to none service. We are an independent, family run company and we pride ourselves on being warm, friendly and are always striving to provide a first-class service to our customers. We offer free no obligation quotations and a 5-year guarantee on all our shutters. And finally…. we are now offering interest free credit over 6-12 months. This means we are able to offer you fantastic shutters with the added benefit of flexible payment terms!
