Gareth Gates

ON FOOTLOOSE before where I’ve had to dance and, of course there was Dancing on Ice, so I picked up the steps OK and I think I manage to pull it off at the end.

When did you first start to sing?

I was eight years old when I first realised I could sing. It was at my first school where they were putting on a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. I was fairly young so I can’t remember too much about it, but I remember it being liberating. Years later I was asked by Andrew Lloyd Webber to play Joseph in the West End and I jumped at the chance. It just hasn’t stopped since!

You’ve now done a lot of musical theatre, do you still want to pursue your pop career?

I want to release another album – but one that I’ve written. As I can write music as well as lyrics, I have been doing so. I like coming up with melodies. I have written some already – 3 acoustic versions were on my greatest hits album. But I really want to finish it. As I want to do it myself, it’s mostly going to be down to me finding or making the time!

COMING: WED 19 – SAT 22 JULY

What can audiences expect from the show?

Did you know Footloose before joining this production?

I am a big fan of the film. It was released the year I was born in 1984 and I remember watching it quite a bit growing up. It’s a classic. I actively went after this job; the role really appealed to me. I’m playing the comedy role which is a type of character that I’ve never played before, and it’s great.

Tell us about the role of Willard.

I’m playing Willard, who is the character who can’t dance. To be honest, that suits me down to the ground! He’s a cowboy from Beaumont. It’s a really small town in the United Stated where everybody knows everybody’s business, and dancing is banned. Ren arrives in Beaumont and shakes everything up; he teaches Willard how to dance. Willard is a goofy character, and this is brand new for me. I am really enjoying playing someone completely different. I like to challenge myself.

14 JUNE 2017

It is quite true to the film and features all the hits from that time and from the film itself, songs like Let’s Hear it for the Boy, Holding out for a Hero and the title track Footloose. It is a great show with some really special moments. We do a mega mix of all the songs at the end and everyone is on their feet and having a good time, so it is a feel-good show. With this cast, everybody sings, acts, dances and plays instruments live too. I really have the greatest respect for this cast, they are a really talented bunch.

What is your favourite musical?

That’s a really tough one. I absolutely loved the 25th Anniversary production of Les Miserables which toured a few years back. It was stunning. The cast were incredible and the venues just huge. I learnt my craft on that job, from the best. We even got to take the show to Paris, which was obviously incredible.

Have you always been able to dance? Did you have lessons?

I’m fortunate that I play a cowboy who can’t dance! At the end of the show he’s had to learn how to dance though. I have done parts

Much has been written and televised about your stammer and the public have seen how much you have improved through the McGuire Programme. How do you cope on stage having lines to speak?

I have found a technique that works for me. It involves having a lot of control and willpower. This can be really hard for me when I am busy or stressed. I lost my singing voice in 2015 and was put on voice rest. This meant no speaking so it set me back a lot so it’s something I am now working on again. Everyone involved in the programme is so supportive – we all support each other and don’t judge. No one understands a stammerer other than another one. Everyone involved in the programme has a stammer but everyone is at different stages of recovery. We don’t use the word cured – as you take your eye off the ball and it can return.

Would you like to do more acting?

I’ve always been a fan of musical theatre – and I love being part of a production. It’s like a family – which is so totally different to being a solo star. Musically, performing is what I love to do and we get to do it every day to different audiences and creating something new. New uniform afoot at

BISHOP CHALLONER SCHOOL

Pupils at Bishop Challoner School in Shortlands, an independent co-educational Catholic School, will soon be adopting a new appearance after many months of planning.

F

ollowing consultation with parents, pupils, staff and Trustees a new school uniform for the senior pupils in Years 7- 11 will emerge this September. The Headteacher of Bishop Challoner, Paula Anderson said, “The new uniform is distinctive and smart and will reflect a shared identity for our pupils”. In the recent Inspection Report 2016, “Pupils’ personal commitment to the school and the local community is very strong. They are beacons for the school in the community”. She says, “I am confident that the pupils will wear their unique uniform with pride for the school in the community.” Oz Schoolwear in Petts Wood have been suppliers of

Bishop Challoner uniform for years and have always provided an excellent and reliable friendly service. We wished to continue working with Oz Schoolwear who have been key in the redesign and development of a new brand identity for Bishop Challoner. Our uniform is still predominantly navy and the school’s blue colour scheme was important to carry on the rich tradition of history but we are replacing the pale blue blouse and shirt with a white one and changing the navy skirt to a pleated skirt in a checked fabric. There is a navy V-necked jumper with a stripe and an option for girls to wear a cardigan if they prefer. The navy blazer is more tailored and fitting which shows that they have a waist!

DOMINIC WALMSLEY ON COMMISSIONING A BESPOKE PIECE OF JEWELLERY. Ever wondered where jewellers get their ideas from and how you start the process of commissioning a piece of jewellery? We asked local, bespoke jeweller Dominic Walmsley to reveal all and found inspiration can strike in the most unexpected places!

where do you get your QSoinspiration from when a customer

asks you to design a special piece?

Jewellery has been used throughout history to mark special occasions and this still applies today, so usually your occasion is the starting point of any design. As an example, a recent commission was for a ring which, for all intents and purposes, was discussed as an eternity ring, but the customer did not want a traditional simple band of diamonds. Often ideas come to me from simply talking to my clients and on this occasion I felt that this ring was a celebration of their life together so far, which made me think of champagne and bubbles. The organic, natural formation of bubbles in champagne are undoubtedly mesmerising and I thought, whilst admiring the diamond-like effervescence in my glass, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful to incorporate this fluid irregularity into something as constant as precious metals and stones!”

you have the design idea QSohowonce do you get that idea over to

the customer?

With the idea fresh in my mind, I start sketching out variations of that design idea until the vision in my head is translated down onto paper. Hand drawing the designs is a little-used practice in the modern age, but

18 JUNE 2017

we feel it adds a real personal touch to the process and to the final piece. However, we often combine this technique with modern technology, using computer aided design software to produce a 3D image of the design that allows our client to get a real feel of how their jewellery will look.

the customer know how QWill much the commission will

cost at this stage?

Once we have the design accepted we are able to give an accurate quotation on the finished ring. Sometimes the customer has given me a guide to what they would like to spend, so I tailor the design to that, but otherwise I am able to give the customer a good idea of what the commission is likely to cost before we move too far along the design. Once the customer has accepted the quote we can get started on the ring.

you see the customer again QWill before the ring is finished?

Oh yes! After 25 years of experience I know how important it is to keep the customer involved in the development of the design.

We will have a fitting stage so that the customer can see how the ring is progressing and if there are any adjustments needed to the design, we are able to do this without too much re-working. The beauty of bespoke is that we are making it purely for you and we are able to make it exactly as you want it. Being so involved in the process from start to finish makes the new creation so much more than ‘just’ new jewellery. The customer was delighted with this contemporary ring; a piece like no other!

DESIGNS ON DIAMONDS We had the pleasure of being part of the Wedding Fair at the Excel Centre in London 8/9th April where we had the opportunity to display our beautiful collection of diamond wedding bands and jewellery for the Bride, Mother of the Bride and Bridesmaids.

I

t was a great experience to be part of the planning of the Wedding Day, the unique ideas on offer to make the Special Day even more special were incredible. We at DesignsOnDiamonds like to think that we can be part of your Wedding Day with our diamond set Wedding rings, but also part of the ‘special’ day that happens months before, the Engagement. The engagement ring is possibly the most important ring you will ever buy and a diamond is still the stone of romance which is traditionally given in this ring. Diamonds come in all shapes and sizes AND a huge range of prices. You can take 5 diamonds, all of the same shape and size and have 5 different prices – ranging from hundreds of pounds to tens of thousands of pounds. Why is this? It comes down to the quality of the stone. A diamond with a very good cut, colour and clarity will cost a lot more than a diamond with poor cut, colour and clarity. Unless a diamond is graded Flawless or Internally Flawless, there will be some type of inclusion within the stone. These inclusions are natural and make a diamond unique, as no other diamond will be exactly the same. Inclusions do not necessarily affect how bright and scintillating a diamond looks as an experienced cutter will cut the diamond so that the inclusion does not affect the stone’s beauty. DesignsOnDiamonds is an Online Jewellery Store that aim to bring to you high quality certified diamond jewellery. We want you to shop with us, confident that the pieces you are buying are genuine and of exceptional quality. It is quite daunting to purchase high

36 JUNE 2017

price items online and we appreciate that. Top jewellery houses (Cartier, Tiffany) and designers (Vuitton, Gucci etc) all offer online purchase of their products. To give you, the customer, piece of mind and a guarantee that you are buying exactly what is described to you, we believe it is important to sell diamonds with certification or some form of certificate of authenticity wherever possible. Before you start the process of buying that special piece of diamond jewellery, we would like to give you some information that will help you make an informed decision as to the right diamond for you. Back in the 1940’s an institution called the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) devised a grading system to bring some regularity to diamond grading. The GIA grading system is recognised worldwide today and is known as the Four C’s, which stand for Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat.

Colour: Grades start from D and go through through to Z. D is the absolute best being colourless. Z would be a strong yellow to brown colour. Cut: The better the cut, the better the diamond will look overall

Clarity: From Flawless to I3. I3 being heavily included and dull to look at.

Carat: Weight/size of diamond

It is so very important to work out what is important to you, beside budget of course, when looking to buy. As GIA Diamond Graduates, we have studied, in depth, the technical make up and qualities of diamonds and believe that colour is the more important “C” to start with. A beautiful colourless diamond that has a couple of noticeable inclusions will definitely outshine a poor colour diamond that is without inclusions. It is so very important to work out what is important to you, beside budget of course, when looking to buy. Size of the diamond or the beautiful dazzling white of a near colourless one. It is very satisfying to be able to give a sizeable ‘rock’ as a token of love, but if the diamond doesn’t come alive with rainbow colours, it could be a huge disappointment to all. We offer a bespoke service where we will source that special diamond, gemstone or piece of jewellery for you, whatever your budget, just let us know. We have contacts with Diamond Traders in Hatton Garden, so we are confident that we will be able to offer the best possible price. DOCTORS at Petts Wood This month Chislehurst Life decided to pay another visit to Doctors at Petts Wood to find out how having a patient-centred approach has worked out for Dr Andrew Williams.

I

t’s been an incredible year so far really, far better than we hoped. The feedback and reaction from the patients who have visited us has been very good”. So says Dr Heather Williams, owner of H. Williams and Associates dental practice in Petts Wood who, regular readers of Chislehurst Life will recall, launched Doctors at Petts Wood with a mission to provide access to private quality GP healthcare. Their aim has been to always put the patient first, and as Dr Andrew Williams, Heather’s husband and Medical Director for Doctors at Petts Wood, explains,

We’re really looking forward to continuing to provide our patients with our great service! it’s been an approach that has been greatly appreciated by patients. “We have been able to deliver compassionate care. Having time to listen really helps us to understand all our patients’ health concerns, and the feedback we have received has helped us improve our services – such as adding the payment plans for Children, Adults and Family. Doctors at Petts Wood and its sister dental practice haven’t stood still this year. So we ask, what areas are they most of proud of?

44 JUNE 2017

All of our medical Doctors medical plans include: • Unlimited Private GP Consultations • Telephone consultations following an initial face to face consult. • 10% off Vaccination fees • 10% off blood tests. • Children at £25 per month, • Adults at £35 per month • Family of 2 adults and up to 4 children under 18 for £75 per month.

“Oh all of it really”, answers Heather with a smile. “Although if you pushed me I think I’m really proud of the tremendously positive response we’ve had from patients. I’m also pleased that it’s so affordable. For patients who just want to visit on a one off, a typical 30 minute appointment is £125, or £100 if paid in advance and for patients who may wish to see us regularly we also have the payment plans. It’s all about giving patients options, and it means patients can choose to either pay whenever they come along, or they can spread their costs through a monthly plan. Many people have chosen this option as they like having the peace of mind of knowing we’re there when we’re needed, and it’s already paid for”. So what does 2017 have in store for Doctors at Petts Wood we wonder? “We’re really looking forward to continuing to provide our patients with our great service!” smiles Heather. “ ‘I’m looking forward to many more patients benefiting from the great skill and compassion, being seen and respected as individuals .” THE DETAILS www.doctorsatpettswood.co.uk reception@doctorsatpettswood.co.uk 183 Petts Wood Road, Kent BR5 1JZ

Christopher Peacock CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY 2017 marks the 25th year in business for Christopher Peacock, the eponymous cabinet maker, who began his solo career by designing his first collection and installing a small display of cabinetry in Greenwich CT.

G

arnering attention from local architects, interior designers and a discerning clientele Peacock’s timeless designs and unmatched quality quickly became the “must have” cabinet brand for the area. Christopher’s design sensibility has not only been a conscientious and sophisticated predictor of the spirit of his time, but also has forged new ground and has proven to be the benchmark of design and quality other cabinetry manufacturers strive to imitate. Peacock said, “When I started my company 25 years ago I never dreamed of the success that it would realize. I basically needed a way to support my family and wanted to create

timeless and beautifully made cabinetry. As I reflect back on what we have accomplished I am amazed and so thankful to the team of talented craftsmen, installers, finishers, and designers, who have helped me realize our collective success.” His cabinetry has always been made to order in the United States, which is also a huge source of pride to Peacock. He owns his own workshop in West Virginia, where his hardworking employees are equally proud to produce cabinetry that is shipped across the globe. “Our gallery-like showrooms are located in London, New York City, Greenwich, Boston, Short Hills, Chicago, San Francisco and Cannes and offer a unique way for our clients to visualize their kitchen, bathroom, library, dressing room, and so on,” said Peacock. “Rather than just seeing small vignettes and door samples, our clients learn and experience the situations that will actually exist in their rooms, in their lives, and how their families will function within the space. Additionally, the custom nature of our product, and on site finishing, offers our clients a vast opportunity to make their space completely unique.” With a new showroom opening in Dallas this spring, Christopher Peacock will debut a new Men’s Dressing Room Collection, as well as new Bath cabinetry collections, hardware designs and finishes. Additionally, many of his showrooms will have new displays installed and Peacock will be hosting events at many of his showrooms throughout the year in celebration of his company milestone. KITCHEN COLOUR TRENDS BY ADRIAN STONEHAM Colour is a powerful design tool that can completely transform the mood of a kitchen. It can change the perception of space, making the area appear wider and brighter, and it can draw the eye towards key features in the room. And, naturally, it’s the perfect way to express personality. Not only is a colourful kitchen a unique choice for period properties and country homes, but in recent years it’s also become more prominent in contemporary kitchen design. A Pop of Zest

Summer is the perfect time to brighten up your kitchen and bold, zesty colours are a great way to liven up a neutral space. One option is Pantone Colour of the Year 2017, Greenery (Pantone number 15-0343), an invigorating lime green, which makes a fantastic choice for adding a striking pop of colour. Alternatively, give your kitchen an instant wow factor with a vibrant orange statement piece; which could be anything

56 JUNE 2017

from a glass splashback, breakfast bar, the fabric of a barstool or lampshade through to appliances. If you are feeling daring, team vibrant orange accessories against dark blue cabinetry for the perfect pairing and the ideal way to blend cool and warm shades in the kitchen. For a brighter impact add orange accents against dazzling white dense worktops for instant contrast. Rustic wooden furniture with mustard yellow walls is also a great way to add a pop of colour and create a design with a twist.

Perfect Pastels

Pastel tones such as pale blues, soft pinks and lavenders are increasing in popularity this year and being seen more and more in kitchen design. Long gone are the days of pastels only being found in babies’ nurseries; they offer a vintage appeal and relaxed feel to living spaces whilst remaining utterly unique. In a traditional white kitchen, pastel accents add a charming flair. Soft colours gently cut through the neutral colour scheme and transform an ordinary kitchen to an inspiring one. Try installing pastel-coloured cabinetry and exposed brick walls – this combination makes for a perfect blend of industrial and pretty, the furniture instilling a fresh and vibrant feel whilst the brick walls keep the space looking contemporary.

The Dark Side

Another colour trend that’s booming in 2017 is dark tones, with strong colours such as greys and sombre blues proving popular. Break up dark kitchen cabinets with accents of colour in the form of a vibrant feature wall, splashback, or bright, quirky coloured appliances, such as a statement fridge. Understated colours, such as dark oranges and moody yellows can be paired with most darker hues to add pockets of interests. In addition, kitchen islands or cabinetry in a pastel shade perfectly complement shadowy, brooding walls and appliances, creating a juxtaposed but elegant look. For kitchens with dramatically high ceilings, consider a dark painted wall to maximise the impact of what’s overhead.

Simple Scandi

Scandinavian styles are completely timeless in any home. Originating from turbulent Nordic winters that call for simplicity and efficiency,

The Finishing Touch

Whilst picking the right colours is an important choice to make, it’s essential to select the appropriate finish too. When compared to standard lacquers, painted materials not only create a softer look, but also offer a durable and long-lasting finish. Traditionally, glossy kitchens have reigned supreme with light-reflecting surfaces and the ability to make the most of small spaces, but we predict that matte finishes will be increasingly popular as the year continues. A matte finish offers a more muted and contemporary aesthetic and is the perfect match for scandi or shaker-style kitchens. And, practically speaking, not only are fingermarks and smudges less visible on a matte surface, it’s easy to wipe clean. Or, why not have the best of both worlds? Glossy and matte finishes complement each other beautifully, giving a subtle contrast between textures and create a balanced, modern kitchen.

Just for you

And finally, why not consider a personalised paint service to match any shade you desire, from an item of furniture to a specific material or wallpaper? Stoneham uses a spectrometer to make sure it’s precise. You have the choice of a smooth painted effect or enhanced grain – designers use a brushing technique to reveal the natural timber beneath the surface, allowing for great experimentation with textures. Kitchens are the heart of your home’s chef, a family hub and a centre for entertainment. It is important your kitchen design reflects the personality of the homeowner and creates a current, comfortable and efficient environment for all its different purposes. Inviting colour into the space will create a cosy, contemporary atmosphere and with a rainbow spectrum at your fingertips, the choices are truly endless. THE DETAILS Take a look at Stoneham’s website here: www.stoneham-kitchens.co.uk Or contact Stoneham on 020 8300 8181.

the style combines effortless elegance with local eccentricities to create a clean-lined, minimalist setting that also embraces a hint of colour, warmth of wood and textural beauty. When we think of Scandinavian kitchens, white is the shade that dominates, often paired with timber. Not only does white mould to any home’s design, it maximises the room’s available natural light while keeping any visual fragmentation to a minimum. Blend a matte palette of white, grey and oaks, with accents from lighting, planting and artwork to add different dimensions to the kitchen space.

B R FLOORING Located in Petts Wood and Eltham, B R Flooring has added 11 new stone designs and five complementary borders to its state-of-the-art Karndean Designflooring showrooms.

T

he new Da Vinci colours bring the natural beauty and intricate textures of real stone indoors, the distinct 18” x 12” tiles take inspiration from weathered steel, natural stone and woven fabric and offer a fresh palette of colours to suit any room or décor. B R Flooring, said: “With colourways and finishes designed to complement emerging trends in home interior design, each new stone design not only replicates the realistic beauty and individuality of its original source, but also remains easy to clean and practical.” From the striking rust and weathered tones of Molten to the subtle, dark hues of Carbon, all four colourways – Molten, Iron Ore, Eisen and Carbon - present the transformation of weathered steel over time, and are ideally placed against plain walls, exposed brick and simple furnishings for a stark, on-trend industrial feel. Designed to offer a sophisticated and understated look, the four natural stone designs feature the realistic grain and fossilisation of limestone. Perfect for both traditional and contemporary spaces, there’s the creamy tones of Dune and Bluff to the darker, grainer Sable and Drift.

70 JUNE 2017

The final three designs in the collection – Burnet, Cambric and Sindon – challenge what ‘we’ see as stone and offers modern, natural colours with a minimalistic look and subtle strands across each tile. Taking inspiration from natural fabrics and concrete combined, the designs can be purposely misleading and interpreted as natural woven fabric or lightly brushed concrete. Introducing additional design variations, the new Da Vinci Stone collection comes with the option of contrasting and complementary borders and design strips. The complete Da Vinci collection will now feature 18 stone and 18 wood designs, all available with a recently extended residential lifetime guarantee.
