WALK OFF THE WINTER C

Photography ©Arnhel de Serra

©Arnhel de Serra

entral heating and long days spent indoors can be the epitome of a cosy winter. But there’s something that can make retreating indoors with a hot mug of tea (or mulled wine…) and your cosiest clothes even better – and that’s getting some bracing fresh air and blowing off the cobwebs first. ere’s a well-known saying, attributed to multiple origins, that there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. So when you started to feel like you’ve had enough of staying indoors, wrap up warm, head outside and breathe in some fresh air. One great spot for a lovely winter walk is Copt Hall Marshes, on the Blackwater Estuary, which has been cared for by the National Trust since 1989. is diverse farmland and salt-marshes are prime habitat for wildflowers and insects like bees, so the National Trust manage nectar-rich field margins and encourage wildflower growth in fields. Copt Hall is also home to scarce and less friendly species like adders too. Copt Hall is often remembered as the site of a plane crash during the First World War. On September 24 1916, a German L33 super-Zeppelin crashed here. Returning from a bombing raid over London's East End, the Zeppelin was attacked by the RAF above Chelmsford and came down within feet of a farm labourer's cottage. But Copt Hall is place most usually associated with peace, calm and quiet. e Blackwater Estuary salt-marsh is an amazing and valuable habitat on the Essex coast. It can be seen as a barren landscape but look a little closer and you'll see it's teeming with life. e most visible presence are the thousands of birds like

Brent geese who call Copt Hall home during the winter months, making it a habitat of national importance. Scarcer species include barn and short-eared owls, kestrels and marsh harriers – spending some time in the bird hide offers a great vantage point for viewing them.e sea wall here was built two centuries ago - claiming land to graze sheep. Today, however, rising sea levels threaten these man-made barriers and the National Trust is enabling nature to take back the shoreline it requires to soften the power of the tides and to act as a buffer between sea and land. If you’re not much of a nature buff, the Essex marshes also offer a taste of wilderness when you just want to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern living. It’s a perfect spot to indulge your inner photographer, artist or if a simple walk is more your thing, there’ll be plenty to catch your eye. FOCUS ON OAKLANDS SCHOOL, LOUGHTON Oaklands is a privately-owned independent school for boys and girls from 2½ to 11 in Albion Hill, Loughton.

W

e talk to Headmistress Cheryl Macnair about the school’s unique strengths including the education of the Nursery, Infant and Junior pupils. Q: Tell us about Oaklands School. We are a relatively small school in Loughton for around 240 pupils. We have small class sizes with a high teacher to pupil ratio and offer a more personalised education. is allows us to know every pupil well and each is treated as an individual. Children enjoy their time with us and develop into confident young people with a wide range of interests. Q: Your Early Years department has been acknowledged by inspectors in recent years to be “Outstanding or “Good” in all categories. How do you maintain such high standards? It is our goal to continually improve on excellence and we are always finding new ways to enhance our pupils’ experiences. We give our youngest children the best possible start to their education in order to set them up with the tools they need to continue their learning journeys throughout life. Q: What were your school highlights during the Autumn Term? It was lovely to see the new pupils settling in and making friends so quickly. Every year I look forward to the Christmas Carol Service. e children sang so beautifully to a packed audience of parents and friends of the school St Mary’s Church in Loughton at Christmas. It was an incredibly proud moment for me. Q: How do you communicate with your parents? From the informal chats at the schools gate to our ‘open door policy’, and from the regular coffee mornings to our

drop-in mornings we both talk and listen to parents regularly. Parents like our electronic communication too and frequently use our website to access information and news. We have a fantastic App, we email newsletters regularly and our ‘textback’ service has enabled parents to digitally ‘sign’ for trips, meetings and documents. Q: What wrap-around care do you provide? ere are breakfast and teatime clubs available from 7.30am to 6pm and an extensive range of extra-curricular clubs and activities as well as weekend and holiday clubs. Q: Where do your pupils go at 11+? Nearly all pupils from Oaklands obtain places at their first choice of senior school at the end of Year 6, and most have several to choose from. is is largely due to our tailor-made curriculum and intensive preparation for 11+. More and more families are looking to transfer from Oaklands to one of our other Oak-Tree Schools - Braeside or Normanhurst - to continue their education within the same Group. Q: How do parents find out more? Our next open morning is ursday 10 March, and we have a number of slots each week for parents to have individual school tours. I like to talk to parents personally about how Oaklands can best suit their child as it gives me the opportunity to get to know each prospective family. n

The History of

EASTBURY MANOR HOUSE

©Eastbury Manor House - National Trust/Rob Stothard

A

striking Elizabethan merchant’s house and gardens, Eastbury Manor House was built by Clement Sysley during the reign of Elizabeth I.

It was originally in an isolated position, on rising ground with views of the ames across marshland to the south. e exterior retains its original appearance. e earliest dated items, such as a lead rainwater hopper head, were produced in the 1570s. Eastbury (sometimes known as Eastbury Hall) was the country house of gentry families for the earlier part of its history. By the 18th and 19th centuries it was inhabited by a succession of tenants such as yeoman farmers, butchers and graziers. ey fattened cattle on the rich marshland pasture before selling them in the London markets. e house gradually fell into decay. One of its two octagonal stair turrets was pulled down in the early 19th century, and one room was even used as a stable. It was in danger of complete demolition until 1918 when it was purchased by the National Trust. e manor of Eastbury is first mentioned in 1331/2 as a demesne of the Abbey of Barking. is meant that the land was not leased out for income but the estate, in both cash and kind, was put towards the general needs of the Abbey. After the Dissolution, the King granted the land to Sir William Denham, after which it passed through a succession of owners until it was bought by Clement

Sysley, a rich merchant from East Ham. e house which exists today was commissioned by Sysley in 1557. It is a two-storey (with a third attic storey) red brick building. e plan is H-shape around a central square courtyard. During the 18th and 19th centuries the house was owned by a series of tenant farmers, who allowed the building to fall into a ruinous state. By 1814 one of the two octagonal stair turrets had been pulled down, and the whole house was under threat of being demolished until the National Trust bought the property in 1918. After restorations had been made, Barking Borough Council took over the lease of the property in 1934, and from 1935 to 1941 it was the local museum for Barking. Eastbury Manor House was recently refurbished with the help of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and now forms part of the Borough’s Heritage Services. It provides a delightful community resource and opens its doors for visitor days, school visits, historical re-enactments, evening events and civil weddings and civil partnership ceremonies. sh Parmar’s fundraising vision to raise £20,000 in six months for two charities supporting children continues. is month Ash is visiting his spiritual home in Vrindavan and the charity Food For Life. As a Trustee Ash is keen to see how things are progressing for the charity which is changing lives through provision of education, food distribution, clothing, medical services and a better environment for the poorest of the poor. Christine Baker reports. Over 40% of Indian children are malnourished and this accounts for 50% of child deaths. Children grow up in a one room house with sometimes five family members sleeping on the floor. No electricity, no running water, no toilet, no kitchen – even a charpoy, a string bed, is a luxury. ey are born to ill health and low self-esteem. eir fathers do not earn enough to provide even basic needs so going to school, wearing a uniform and having two meals a day was a distant dream until Food For Life Vrindavan opened its doors. www.fflvrindavan.org Maya first came to the notice of FFLV in 2000. Her family were existing only because of free meals provided by the charity. Maya’s Mum visited the FFLV food distribution every morning and evening, even while she was pregnant with Maya. Once Sandipani Muni School opened, under the auspices of FFLV, Maya was asked to join. Maya says “My three brothers have been coming to SMS since they were three years old. If my brothers were not allowed to come with me, I could not come to school. I would have to stay at home and look after my brothers while my mother and father worked. I am glad that the SMS nursery facility allowed me and other students to come to school with younger siblings so that we have a chance at getting an education.” Fifteen years later Maya, and hundreds like her, have been given a future by FFLV. Meanwhile, news of local charity Haven House Children’s Hospice. Chief Executive Mike Palfreman says “We have launched Vision 2020, our first five-year strategy which aims to increase the number of children that we support across North and North East London, West Essex and East Hertfordshire. From our beautiful home located in Woodford Green, on the borders of Essex, we provide a range of services to families to support them through the most difficult circumstances imaginable. ese include planned respite, short break and end-of-life care, as well as services designed to improve emotional and physical wellbeing. During 2014/15 we supported 329 children, however research by the University of Leeds estimates that there are more than 2,000 children living with a life-limiting condition in the Haven House catchment area, many of whom would benefit from hospice care. As part of Vision 2020, we aim to increase the number of children that we support to 500 per year by the end of the decade, but we can only continue to grow and help even more life-limited children and families with your support and generosity.” ank you. n www.havenhouse.org.uk

DIY TEXT OR PROFESSIONAL CONTENT?

WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

Informative and engaging content should convert interest into a genuine business opportunity. MARKETING TIP: Top copywriters and digital marketers strongly recommend incorporating strategic and effective content marketing into all promotional campaigns. is includes websites, PR material, brochures, leaflets. You should also consider your branding message and image. ere are hundreds of pages on Google reiterating the importance of content. WHERE DO YOU START? • Understand your target audience • Research your competitors and ideally, prepare a chart of your company by comparison • Be sure and clear about your USP and mission statement • Consider your overall plan and appropriate budget • Brainstorm ideas and develop a truly unique approach • Compile a report with a strategic plan and objective • Write in a professional format that is appropriate to the medium. For example how you would write a leaflet is very different to a website • Be realistic with the time a potential reader would invest to review your material • Consider all your marketing literature and how it will ensure a drive of traffic to your website. CALIBRE OF CONTENT Content should be compelling and helpful. In addition, your website will receive more hits if the content is 2 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 6

constantly updated and interesting. In order to really boost traffic to your website, it is essential to have marketing material such as brochures and leaflets and to regularly post blogs on both your website and via social media. It is important to be seen as a trusted source of information who is prepared to share their knowledge. …AND FINALLY Keep track of your content marketing campaigns and record the ROI (Return on Investment). All marketing material should have a purpose and its results tracked. If it’s good, it will be found on the internet and circulated. Monitoring success will help you to plan future campaigns. e internet facilitates multiple opportunities however it is worth considering what is appropriate, rather than wasting precious time and money on anything and everything. Be selective in order to maximise the value of your time and budget. Finally content has to be well-written. How and what you write is indicative of the calibre of your product or service. Aesthetics are your company’s first, visual impression but the content will steer your target audience to select YOUR company to discuss business.

The London Classic Car Show

18 - 21 February 2016 Excel London

The capital’s biggest and best grows yet again

Crammed with innovative features, mouth-watering classic cars and a star-studded list of celebrity visitors, The London Classic Car Show will grow to double the size and content of its hugely successful 2015 show.

T

he latest addition to the Show is an entire new hall that will be dedicated to the best single marque classic car clubs. Show organiser, Brand Events will be working with around 25 leading car clubs devoted to prestige and performance cars to create a stunning display of privately owned classics from the 1920s to the 21st century.

Salute to the ‘Greatest car of the 20th Century’

Unique display at the London Classic Car Show celebrates the McLaren F1 and its creator, Gordon Murray. Produced between 1992 and 1998, just 106 examples were built. Of that figure a mere 64 were standard road cars, so there’s only a remote chance of seeing one in the flesh. A special display devoted to the F1 and curated by designer Gordon Murray will form one of the major attractions at the show.No fewer than five F1s will be shown – two standard road cars, two GTR racers and a ‘long tail’ F1 GT road car. To give visitors a unique insight into the world’s first ‘million dollar motor’ – the McLaren cost £634,500 when new – one of the road cars will be displayed with its doors, bonnet and engine cover open, while one of the racers will have its exterior panels removed to show what goes on under the skin. One of the unique features of the London Classic Car Show is ‘The Grand Avenue’ a roadway running through the centre of the exhibition hall along which classics of all different shapes and sizes are put through their paces. It is anticipated that one of the McLarens will take to The Grand Avenue during the show, so visitors will not just be able to gaze at this remarkable British car at rest, but see and hear it in action, too. Tickets for the London Classic Car Show are on sale now and start at £23 (including booking fee) for single adult entry on Friday, Saturday or Sunday and rise to £65 for entry to Thursday’s Premium Preview Evening. This includes fast track entry, the best views of The Grand Avenue at the Turning Circle Viewing Platform, access to the exclusive Premium Lounge, a Show

Handbook and even a glass of Joseph Perrier Champagne. The London Classic Car Show will also have a number of other new features, including ‘Classic Corner’, an open forum running virtually continuously throughout the show where guest speakers will talk about classic cars as investments, about the pleasure a classic car can bring and offer advice about buying at auction. More dealers and more trade stands are also promised. A standard adult entry ticket will cost £23 (children £17) with family tickets at £65. Premium access to the glittering premier evening will cost £65 each for which tickets will be strictly limited. “We are delighted to hear that the first London Classic Car Show was so successful that the second edition is going to be even bigger. Thankfully we have the space at ExCeL to provide the perfect stage for this innovative and genuinely exciting show,” SAID JEREMY REES, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, EXCEL.

HOW EPPING FOREST WAS SAVED

by the City of London Corporation’s Superintendent at Epping Forest, Paul Thomson

T

he City of London Corporation’s role in the battle to save Epping Forest from destruction is a complex story which saw one of London’s most important landscapes saved for future generations. Epping Forest as a Royal Forest As part of the Royal Forest of Essex, Epping Forest was one of sixty forests across England where forest Law gave the Crown the right to hunt game across largely privately owned land. Hunting across Forest landscapes was an important demonstration of Royal and aristocratic power and a necessary practice for war. Forest Laws recognised the earlier tradition of shared ‘common’ rights for Forest dwellers to graze livestock and to cut firewood and turf. In 1851, the Crown Lands, including Epping Forest’s Forestal rights, were transferred to Government Commissioners charged with increasing revenue for the Exchequer. e reat of Enclosure Between 1760 and 1870, the ‘enclosure movement’ saw seven million acres of English countryside change from shared common land to more profitable private enclosed land, with many commoners losing their traditional rights. In Royal Forests, the release of the Crown’s Forestal Rights spurred landowners to enclose Forest Land and evict their commoners. At Epping Forest, London’s continued growth saw opportunities to release land for development rather than agricultural improvement. From 1817, a series of Parliamentary Bills unsuccessfully pressed for the disafforestation of Epping Forest. In 1851, following the sale of Forestal Rights, 3,000 acres of nearby Hainault Forest, another fragment of the Forest of Essex, was felled within six weeks. Six years later, the Commissioners sold half of the Royal Forestal Rights at Epping Forest, encouraging the illegal enclosure of some 4,000 acres of Epping Forest by 1865.

e Campaign to Save Epping Forest e loss of Hainault Forest and the sale of Epping’s Forestal Rights created a broad coalition of different interests who fought to save the Forest. e Forest’s remaining judicial officer, Verderer Palmer, promoted to Government the Forest’s 500 years of use by Londoners for recreational benefit. Both political radicals and nonconformist religious groups emphasised the importance of the Forest for freedom of assembly and worship. John T Bedford, a member of the City of London Corporation, recognised that the City was the only body with sufficient resources to save Epping Forest, and persuaded the City to become involved through a Commission of Inquiry in 1871. Between 1874 and 1878, the City of London purchased the remaining unenclosed land, some 5,531 acres, paying compensation to the manors for loss of enclosures and to commoners for the necessary loss of some rights. e Crown agreed to relinquish their remaining Forestal rights and in 1878 the Epping Forest Act was passed, establishing the City of London as the Conservators of Epping Forest. On 6 May 1882 Queen Victoria was invited to open the Forest to the public. At the opening the address from the Lord Mayor of London celebrated the substitution of royal privilege for popular right, with the Forest being dedicated to the enjoyment of the people for ever. Funding the Forest Today, the City of London continues to support Epping Forest as a charitable trust, which is increasingly seeking additional sources of funding to maintain its stewardship of the Forest and protect it for future generations.n

MOVING FORWARD

2016

INTO

We are all agreed that 2016 is going to be exciting and successful.

H

ealthy eating and a careful diet regime is a great start; joining the local gym will enhance a sense of improved well-being. Smoking and rigorous sun bathing is very last century as compared to the safety conscious and medically enlightened, who put health before excessive beauty regimes and the need to imbibe carcinogenic substances. Even those old black and white films, where actors are dragging on their cigarettes, seem just a tad ridiculous rather than fashionable and seductive. As you continue to be inspired, pottering around our local high roads is always a great way forward. Loughton, Brentwood, Wanstead and Epping are particularly good and interesting. If revamping your kitchen cupboards with the view to healthier options, Holland and Barrett have interesting and delicious alternatives to chocolate. Nuts are healthy but if counting calories, dodge cashews. Dried berries and seeds are better than sweets, plus trialling a top range of herbal or fruit teas instead of consuming copious amounts of tea or coffee is also a good idea. We’re all busy, shuffling unrelenting timelines and duties. Especially those of us who are women with numerous responsibilities such as being a wife, mother, cook and worker! We always seem to be at the bottom of an endless list that looks after everybody else first. 3 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 6

However we can only really help others if we’re in a good place too. is brings me to the importance of scheduling the ME TIME; relaxing, exercising and spending leisurely time with family and friends. ink of your phone or car, unless recharged will invariably go flat or stop working. For me personally, I know that my best business and personal decisions are generally made when cutting off from everything else. It all feels so much clearer and obvious when a plan is made away from the daily grind, rut or routine. Now is the perfect time to action all ideas after the long Christmas and New Year break. WISHING ALL THE READERS OF THE ESSEX LIFE SERIES OF MAGAZINES HAPPY, HEALTHY AND SUCCESSFUL 2016!

CELEBRATING 5 YEARS AT SMILE DESIGN BY ASH

AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ASH PARMAR BY FAE MANNING (EDITOR OF FISH MEDIA GROUP LTD)

In January 2011, Smile Design By Ash was created. It was a brand new, state-of-the-art dental practice, designed by renouned interior designer Sheree Davenport, and fitted out with the latest technology and dental equipment. In this special interview, I caught up with the principal dentist Dr Ash Parmar, to find out more about his journey so far… Q: So, congratulations on the 5th anniversary of Smile Design By Ash. Tell me how things have been in the last five years. Ash: I am pleased to say that we have steadily progressed as a business year by year. I am very blessed to have the excellent support from my father Bhikhu who works hard behind the scenes helping run the practice and supporting me in many ways. I

4 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 6

would also like to sincerely thank my wife Jyoti, who has supported me as a wife and colleague at work – she has been very understanding as any new business requires an immense amount of hard work, energy and focus to become successful. I am also lucky to have a wonderful professional, friendly and caring Team whose main goal is to offer outstanding dental care at every visit.

Ash january dp.qxp__ 08/01/2016 13:13 Page 2

Q: Feel Good Dentistry – tell me more about this. Ash: Research has shown that many people are nervous about going to the dentist. People have often had a bad experience, which puts them off visiting the dentist. is means that their dental health suffers. ey may also have lower self-esteem because they may not be confident with their smile. is can have a direct effect on a person’s lifestyle including relationships, career and the ability to enjoy food. At Smile Design by Ash, we offer “lifestyle smiles”. is means that we create a beautiful and healthy smile that is perfect for the client. is will make them feel good, and in many instances change their life. Other clients feel better when they can eat whatever they want for the first time due to having dental implants. And how do you think they feel if they know that they will have painless dentistry in a unique spa like environment? We care to ensure you “feel good” at every step of your journey with us. Q: e practice name suggests you only do cosmetic dentistry. How true is this? Ash: is is a misconception actually. I am well known for my skills in cosmetic dentistry and implants. However, as a dental practice we offer a complete range of services including hygiene treatment, fillings and dental check ups. We are also happy to see children and we charge nominal private fees up to the age of eighteen. My colleague Luk works full time and is highly skilled in providing braces treatment and general dentistry. Jyoti works part time and loves doing general dental treatment. Our very experienced hygienist Laura offers excellent professional care to achieve healthy gums and fresh breath. We also have other colleagues who are talented and experienced in implants and root canal treatment. So, the advantage of being a patient with is that we can take care of all your dental needs “under one roof”. Q: What would you say makes Smile Design By Ash so special? Ash: I am told many times by our clients that they feel almost like a family member when they visit us. Our staff make everyone feel welcome and we pay a lot of attention to detail so that every visit is comfortable for them. We also take a lot of pride in the quality of work we do. Above all, it has to be our unique approach to help reduce anxiety of going to the dentist. Whether it’s administering painless injections, using our unique Nucalm system to make you feel naturally relaxed, or just taking the time to

listen carefully to their concerns, they will notice a difference. We also work closely with an anxiety expert in Harley Street to help nervous clients eradicate their fears once and for all. Q: What are people worried about the most? Ash: Fear, feeling embarrassed, concern about the end result and the financial investment. Fear as I explained earlier is always overcome at Smile Design By Ash. I also give people hope by showing them cases far worse than theirs, with stunning improvements (see our Smile Gallery at www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk). We offer a complimentary artistic “mock up” or a “trial smile” to show how their smile will look before they commit to cosmetic treatment – in this way, clients feel confident they will have a smile to suit their face. Finally, we offer 0% interest financing over two years to help make treatment affordable. Q: What is your plan for 2016? Ash: It is really to carry on with what we are good at as a Team. I want to take it a bit easier to spend more quality time with my wife and children. Luk is doing a great job in supporting me as dentist, and our staff are well trained in helping the dentists with procedures such as taking X-rays, photographs and impressions. is allows me more time to meet new patients and give my advice on their dental concerns, and I might even fit in the odd round of golf! Q: I notice you are putting effort in raising money for charities. How is this going? Ash: My personal goal in life is to change peoples’ lives and make them smile. In this context, it is really about acknowledging the grace of God, feeling gratitude for everything we have, and showing love and compassion for children and individuals who are less fortunate than us. Our fundraising campaign will culminate in a black tie event in Spring/Summer 2016. is will be truly a memorable night…n THE DETAILS

ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT

?

Why not have the doctor visit you at home?

C

ancer affects everyone – the young and old, the rich and poor, men, women and children – and represents a tremendous burden on patients, families and societies. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world and many of these deaths can be avoided. Over 30% of cancer can be prevented by healthy lifestyle or by immunization against cancer causing infections (Human Papilloma Virus, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C). Other cancers can be detected early, treated and cured. Even with late stage cancer, the suffering of patients can be relieved with good palliative and end of life care. Cancer can occur anywhere in the body. e commonest cancers affecting both sexes are the lungs, stomach and large bowel. In addition, in women, this includes breast and cervical cancer; in men, liver, oesophageal and prostate cancer. In those unfortunate enough to develop cancer, early detection is essential in reaching a prompt diagnosis and instigating a treatment plan. is requires a doctor picking up on subtle signs and symptoms which raise the suspicion of cancer. ese are vast and differ according to the specific site of the cancer and include tiredness, loss of weight, shortness of breath, bloating, lumps, change in bowel habit, abnormal vaginal bleeding, amongst many others symptoms. It is important to note that although these symptoms affect many people on a daily basis, they do not always suggest there is an underlying cancer; however, a detailed history and examination by a doctor will uncover if there are other specific concerning symptoms which

4 4 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 6

warrant further investigation. Investigations that can be arranged include simple blood tests including ‘tumour (cancer) markers’ which are useful in screening for certain cancers. X-rays, ultrasound scans, cervical smears, biopsies, endoscopies, MRI scans and other investigations can also be used to search for cancer. ‘Home Visit Doctor’ can address any concerns you may have over cancer by carrying out a comprehensive assessment of your health. We can advise any alterations in lifestyle that may assist in cancer prevention including help with stopping smoking, weight reduction, dietary and exercise advice and screening for sexually transmitted diseases. Furthermore, we can carry out simple screening tests in the comfort of your home and arrange any further investigations that will help rule out a diagnosis of cancer as a cause for your symptoms.n

HEALTH & BEAUTY

BEAT THE BLUES Don’t dash headlong into a January detox, this is the time to recover from the hectic festivities and indulge in some warming creature comforts

S

ERIOUSLY, after all the planning, partying, cooking, eating, and general craziness, who really wants to begin the year by running a 10k and downing nothing more than a few kale smoothies? ere is plenty of time for all of that as we head closer to spring and in the ancient art of Ayurveda, spring is the best time for the mind and body to take on new challenges. As for January, this is the time to take a big step back and think about nurturing your poor, tired skin in preparation for a new season. A time to be kind to yourself and spoil your overworked body and face with some truly gorgeous, warming rituals that will get you right back on track.

Guinot is perhaps associated with more ‘clinical’ treatments (for more targeted results) than the warm, relaxing kind, however, they are very much up there with some very therapeutic ‘hands-on’ facials too. Choose from the Aromatic using high-quality essential oils to relieve facial stresses, or perhaps the Liftosom that uses incredible massage techniques to stimulate collagen production, and manually ‘lift’ the skin. After all that hard partying let’s not forget the eyes; are those puffy, dark circles proving difficult to shift no matter how much sleep-debt you’re trying to make up? All you need is a bit of Eye Logic to detox the whole area in a very relaxing way. n

HEAD TO TOE NOURISHMENT Rather than targeting just one area think of your body as a whole. Nourishing massage treatments will not only work wonders for your body, but will also bring a warm glow to your complexion. Even something as simple as an Indian head massage will switch that high-pressure valve into a more relaxed zone; just watch as those tight shoulders drop and the tension drifts away from you face. Follow with a gloriously indulgent hot-stone body massage and release all that festive stress as your body is gently brought back to life and filled with warmth. Goodbye knots…hello smiles! Now if you’re already familiar with Arissa you’ll know that it’s with facials that we really excel. When it comes to warmth there is nothing like the beautifully fragrant, pure ingredients of our Ayurvedic therapies, however we’re also very keen to extol the virtues of Guinot.

MAKE JANUARY YOUR MONTH TO UNWIND, GET BACK ON TRACK, AND INDULGE YOUR BODY AND MIND. IT’S BY FAR THE BEST WAY TO ENTER INTO A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

THE ARISSA ‘WINTER WARMER’ OFFERS: Give yourself a new-year treat and be kind to your bank balance too!

PERFECT SKIN TIPS FOR HEALTH AND BEAUTY 2016 WITH FRANCES FURLONG

P

eels are the backbone of good skincare and are often overlooked and not promoted enough, yet they can do so much to improve the quality of skin including the tone, texture and elasticity for all skin types. ere is a peel for everyone!

E

xercise regime, sit down and make a plan on how you will fit in 3 hours a week minimum to help you mange your stress, skin and health conditions, look and feel better inside and out. Anything from brisk walking, sports, swimming or personal training, many people dread the gym, so make it fun and applicable to your lifestyle, work and family balance.

R

efresh your skin. Aftter the long cold winter months, our skin looses moisture quickly, skin can look dull and lifeless. e constant change of temperatures from our vessels constricting in the cold to dilating when we go inside to the warm can cause redness, broken veins and dilated pores. Treat your skin to a moisturiser packed full of hyaluronic acid and vitamins, choose treatments like meso glow vitamins injected into the skin, Restylane vital drops etc., derma roller to repair and intense pulsed light to calm red stressed skin.

F

ollow up all the 'to do' jobs, whether it's starting a fitness, healthy eating or stop smoking regime. To getting rid of unsightly blemishes or lumps and bumps on the skin with cryotherapy treatments. It's time for you to set your health and beauty goals

E

ating to feel better is a must, it's amazing that people still don't link feeling better physically and mentally with what they put inside their bodies. Vitamin B12 injections can really help fight fatigue and lift your mood to get motivated. I also love mineral supplements, sometimes the quality of cer-tain fruit and vegetables does not have the full nutrients our bodies crave so adding them to our diet can really help.

C

oncentrate on your main skin or health problem. By focusing on one concern, such as wrinkles or dark spots, you’ll get the best results. Look for a treatment or product that targets your concern. ere are two reasons for this: - No product or treatment can treat all signs of skin ageing. - Using more than one anti-ageing product in a few days or weeks can irritate the skin, making you look older. When using skin care products less is definitely more.

T

reat the décolletage (which encompasses the neck, shoulders back and chest) and hands, ladies often neglect these two areas - which are tell tell signs of ageing, I encourage my clients to extend their face and neck skincare regime to these areas also. Remember intense pulsed light, meso glow and hydrating booster vital Restylane drops are amazing. Furthermore CryoPen can help with unsightly age spots and red spots known as Campbell de Morgan.

S

kin care products, throw out any out of date bottles as this could be harming not helping your skin. Generally SPF protectors last a year after opening. Have realistic expectations: Exaggerated promises, such as look 10 years younger overnight or quickly reduce all signs of ageing are too good to be true. It’s important to remember that anti-ageing skin care products deliver modest r re-sults. You cannot get the results of a facelift from a cream. Read product labels and select a prod-uct that offers all of the following:• Hypoallergenic (e product can still cause an allergic reaction, but there is less risk.) • Non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic (does not cause acne)

K

issable lips, treat your lips to the ultimate built in Vaseline, hyaluronic acid fillers are a fabulous way of given definition to thin weak lips, also helping dry cracked lip sufferers. In my practice the majority of clients who use fillers to help the mouth area, you would never guess, naturally enhanced.

I

nvest in new make up, brushes if you have had them for a long time and a good brush cleaner. I see lots of bacterial skin infections due to dirty make up brushes, especially those suffering with acne symptoms.

N

ight time makeover for inside and out, I know it's boring but we all need good quality and enough sleep to repair our bodies and minds. Remember the most important time of time to help skin is before bed, as we sleep the creams, serums and repair solutions are at there best so ensure you are thorough with your regime to get the results you desire. n THE DETAILS

KITCHENS

hen Mr. & Mrs. Y. from Chingford first came into Schmidt in Loughton and saw the impressive cutting edge displays they knew straight away that they had found the perfect partner to help them with their dream kitchen. A young couple with clear ideas of their own, it was an easy process for Michael their Designer to get the project moving quickly in the right direction. ey chose a striking combination of hi-gloss Caneo, a powerful dark, rich, glossy grey and a contrasting matt, pale Kashmir, a subtle pale grey muted tone, with mirrored grey glass splashbacks. e cabinets were finished with a beautiful brushed steel profile handle, which is subtle and just adds a slight curved accent to the clean lines of the drawers. e full space of the kitchen area was maximised with a bespoke dining island, which mirrored the huge bi-fold doors opening onto the lovely garden. With two types of cooking, both gas and flexible induction, for different styles of cooking, and a high tech stainless steel pop-up power & USB outlet set into the pure white Quartz worktop. Hi-tech with clean lines and a contemporary feel were the design drivers that hit the right notes for Mr. & Mrs. Y. ey added electronic closure to the already upgraded premium cabinets we supply as standard at Schmidt. With an integrated Neff Coffee machine and the superb mood lighting as the final flourishes they are now ready for some

serious entertaining, and the best thing is you never have to leave the kitchen! Schmidt came on board early in the Design stage, a small contract deposit enabled Michael to liaise directly with the builder to organize the flush line extraction ducted into the new ceiling created for the project. Having the benefit of the technical drawings early in process, saved money and potential problems, with Michael project managing with the builder throughout, creating a hassle free install for the client and putting the whole kitchen on a sound footing. e Kitchen is an important part of any home, creating a centre piece at the heart of the home complimenting the whole house. Mr. & Mrs. Y. are very happy with their new kitchen and all of the finishes shown in this article can be seen at our Loughton showroom. Are you facing another winter with Cold, Draughty or Leaking Windows?

D

oes your home have ageing metal windows? If so then the thought of another winter like last year is probably sending shivers down your spine already, not to mention the rising energy costs of trying to keep your home warm. Now is probably the best time to do something about it before the cold weather really hits in the New Year. The Heritage Window Company has been manufacturing and installing slimline aluminium windows for 20 years with innovative concepts to deliver unparalleled performance. The new Heritage Conservation range with its unique ultralow profile frame has been carefully developed to replicate traditional style steel windows, and provide all the benefits

mean they can be customized to almost any requirements, and the tough powder coated finish means they are virtually maintenance free. You can choose from over 200 colours – even opting for different colours inside and out to suit your home’s décor. The Heritage Window Company takes its reputation for quality products and customer service very seriously – the company employs its own team of trained craftsmen and all installations are monitored throughout the contract to ensure the highest quality standards. Proof of just how successful this formula is are the many customer testimonials which can be viewed at their showrooms, and this relentless focus on customer

of double glazing, without compromising the character of a period home. Heritage Conservation windows not only offer better thermal performance – having achieved an ‘A’ performance rating and a 1.6+ U value – but satisfy all the latest building regulations for replacement or new build applications, and multipoint shootbolt locking provides extra security as well. Managing Director, Sean Ballard says: “One of the great advantages of Heritage windows is that they fit into existing timber subframes which dispenses with the need for redecoration. Should the subframes need replacing, our craftsmen can reproduce new timber frames matching the original profile.” The windows can also be fitted direct-tobrick or stone. Many customers have a specific idea of what they want, so all Heritage windows are bespoke and made to order in its London factory. A range of styles and glazing options

satisfaction and quality product has clearly paid off. “We get people writing in every week, talking about how pleased they are with their new windows and the care and attention to detail of our fitters. In fact, a large proportion of our business comes from existing customers or referrals, which is encouraging” says Sean. As energy prices continue to rise, the cost of heating your home is only going to increase. Heritage’s energy efficient windows employ a ‘polyamide thermal resin break’ to reduce condensation and argon-filled double-glazed sealed units to ensure more of the heat stays in – helping you keep those heating bills down.

Slimline aluminium replacement windows save on energy costs and preserve the appearance of your period property

How metal is taking over our homes

ll that glitters is not gold - because silver, bronze and copper are also dazzling in decor this season and beyond. These days, metal is creeping into our homes in all guises and in all places, from wallpaper to flooring, appliances to furniture. Right now, metals in any form are huge. Today’s interior designers are using glowing metallic wallpapers to add warmth and sheen to a room and metal worked into flooring, whether it’s tiles or carpet, for richness and light. Metal can appear everywhere, from bookshelves to tiling to furniture, where it appears in sinuous sculptural forms. It’s worth considering how your chosen metal will work practically. Zinc, for example, looks beautiful on a kitchen countertop but it will change over time as it becomes stained by ingredients, warped by hot pans and scratched. Pewter is easier to maintain, or you could go for good old stainless steel, which won’t stain, although it can be scratched. Bringing on the bling couldn’t be better timed, as the most glittering of seasons, is here. But investing in some decor treasure for your home won’t be a waste, as this look is set to last long after the baubles have been packed away. The metallics trend is definitely going to stick around, so whether you’re a gold-digger, silver-seeker or just burning for bronze, there’s sure to be something to appeal... 1. Warm your interiors with rich coppery shades - The allure of rich copper to give your kitchen a glow looks beautiful - from hammered copper countertops to custom kitchen backsplash tiles, copper is the answer to your warm aesthetic questions in your head. Visit your favourite tile specialist for a mixture of copper and mosaic tiles for the kitchen or bathroom. 2. Golden hues in interiors are hotter than hot - Remember in the 1980’s when gold and brass were big interior metals and then the trend slowly faded away? Well they have returned in more subtle ways and wallpaper, furniture and ornamental cabinetry pulls and decor are big for gold and brass. If you want to add glam to your bedroom, try adding golden metallic wallpaper that has a slight sheen behind your bed as an eye-catching accent wall. Lighting fixtures such as

chandeliers, wall sconces and pendant lights are showing off their new golden hues and bringing these into your home along with darker hues will add a dramatic flair to your interiors 3. A return to green living with corrugated metal - If your decorative style steers more towards the rustic and natural approach to metallic finishes, why not try the appeal of corrugated metal? In recent years corrugated metal has been used by designers for walls, ceilings, sides of cabinetry and creative accent walls in bedrooms and even adorning masculine bathrooms. Try adding corrugated metal to bring out your love for recycled and repurposed materials. 4. Cool silver metallic finishes are still top rated - When it comes to the most used and specified finishes of kitchen, bath, and interior designers it has to be the silvery metallic family of metals which include: nickel, chrome, aluminium, and stainless steel. These silvery metals are durable have high reflective qualities and come in a variety of finishes from a dull brushed finish to highly polished to sparkle in any light. 5. Mirrored furniture is all the talk of the town - If there ever has been a re-emergence of glamour added to interiors it is now! Mirrored furniture reminisces back to Hollywood Regency style with highly reflective furnishings, mirrored dressers and tables and bold colours create the look of a modern Art Deco era. Bring in mirrored furniture to your interiors and add instant glam without even having to try! 6. Ornamental metal throughout your home - While metallic finishes are seen in large quantities throughout your home, don’t forget about ornamental metals throughout your interiors that are just as important. Remember, attention is in the details and wrought iron ornamental railings and banisters are a prime area to showcase this gorgeous metal. Also look to cabinetry door pulls, door hardware and even exterior door hardware for metal subtleties. You will be surprised how metallic finishes are trending in every part of your home. The metallic trend is one that is often forgotten but once you see it, you can’t fathom how you ever forgot about this wonderful style.

FINE & COUNTRY FEATURE

LOUGHTON “We just knew immediately when we viewed this property that this would make the perfect home for us. We could see the potential for expansion of the accommodation and we were totally captivated by the size of the garden. Our favourite space within the home has been the kitchen/breakfast room; it’s certainly the heart and hub of the home – it’s an area where we can all get together for family gatherings or relaxing after a long day at work. The rear garden was certainly one of the key features that sold the property to us – it is almost like having your own park. It provides a great sense of privacy and we have enjoyed many a family gathering.”
