Broadening horizons with Art & Photography A-levels

ecently many independent sixth-form colleges have seen an increase in the number of students taking up Art and Photography at A-level. This is particularly evident amongst international students from countries such as China, Singapore and Vietnam, where the more traditional subjects such as Maths, the Sciences and Economics were always the more popular choice at A-level. Rob Smith, who runs the highly successful Photography department at Albemarle College in London’s Mayfair comments: “Students are drawn to Photography because of the useful and varied skillset that they’re able to develop. The course provides a credible and viable compliment to traditionally academic subjects. As the structure of the course incorporates psychology, sociology, history, literature and art
practice, it provides a solid foundation for undergraduate study in visual, intellectual and analytical degree subjects”. Many students chose to take Photography or Art & Design because they intend to study Architecture, Fashion or Product Design or Fine Art at University, but an increasing number are actually choosing to further their degree study in Photography having whetted their appetite at A-level. The study of Photography allows students to develop a core understanding of two-dimensional picture-making. Students will learn the complexities of camera techniques, digital production / postproduction and how images are read and disseminated. ONCOPOLE: A new kind of French trip

For years, school language trips have involved remarkably similar activities; language lessons in the morning and afternoon activities in the local area sum up the vast majority of such excursions.And rightly so, since there needs to be both a core language component as well as the opportunity for broader cultural appreciation.

chools now, though, are under pressure to deliver a more rewarding experience, hence why Merchant Taylors' has begun to expand the range and quality of its trips abroad. In Modern Languages, this started with a memorable Spanish trip to Cuba a few years ago. Geography trips to China and a Duke of Edinburgh's Award trip to Nepal have continued the trend and now the French department has organised a stunning opportunity for our linguists at the Oncopole, home of the Institut Universitaire du Cancer de Toulouse (IUCT), one of Europe's

top centres for cancer treatment and research. This is the product of a collaboration between a cancer centre (the Claudius Régaud Institute) and the oncology departments of Toulouse University Hospital in order to offer a complete and integrated range of treatments. This brings together teams involved in fundamental research, clinical research and applied research, specialising in all types and stages of cancer. As experts in complex cases and rare tumours, treatment combines cutting-edge medicine and a heavy emphasis on interpersonal relations. The IUCT Oncopole favours a holistic approach to illness in all its aspects, whether medical, psychological or biological. IUCT Oncopole therefore brings together doctors, surgeons, radiotherapists, health professionals, teachers, researches and industrialists. In all, there are 3000 employees on an enormous 550 acre site. There is also a biopark for biotech startups, a public cancer research centre, a centre of advanced technologies for life sciences, a start-ups incubator and hotels, services and associations for patients and families. Boys will have the opportunity to shadow doctors, gain an overview of the fabrication of chemotherapy drugs, be shown oncogenetic research on cancer heredity and get involved in data analysis. The work experience is open to those aged 16 years above, offering encouragement to those boys who have taken their GCSE French one year early and are keen to continue their study of the language. There has already been great interest from boys, as they start to see that their hard work in language acquisition can open doors far away from the classroom. We are keen to strengthen the link in future years and find more such specialist opportunities for boys to employ their language skills. There was great emphasis on each child reaching their own potential. The Steel and Jazz Bands held our attention and the teachers providing extra support for those with learning difficulties together with an academic extension programme really told us that this school was inclusive.
