CÉDRIC GROLET

UNVEILS A NEW AFTERNOON TEA AT THE BERKELEY

8 OCTOBER 2022

Cédric Grolet – one of the world’s best pastry chefs –opened the doors to his first patisserie outside of France, Cédric Grolet at The Berkeley in February 2022. With a string of accolades citing him as the best pastry chef in the world, Grolet is known for his trompe-l’œil artistry and legendary Instagram channel which has a following of 3.6 million, which he runs himself with signature flair and spontaneity.

Guests seated in the surroundings of The Berkeley Café designed by Remi Tessier, are welcomed with an iced vanilla tea and Grolet’s cake stand – perfectly paired with tea, coffee or champagne –showcasing two savoury and five sweet creations.

The menu evolves and changes with the seasons but for Autumn, Grolet features the chef’s iconic vanilla flower, a Paris Brest, a pistachio cookie and, for a purist English nod, a scone with cream and jam. The sweet piece de resistance is a glistening trompe-l’œil green apple which, inside, features fresh apple and dill. The savoury goodies are Grolet’s highly intricate

SACHI, Pantechnicon’s Japanese restaurant

Hidden on the lower ground floor of Pantechnicon, Sachi showcases regional Japanese cooking, with Tokyo speakeasy vibes! With vaulted booths and a private dining room, Sachi’s team of talented chefs and mixologists create innovative food and drink never experienced before in London.

Sachi’s Autumn Menu

Head chef Collin Hudston introduces Sachi’s new flavours, moving toward an earthier heavier flavour, as Autumn and Winter are getting closer. In Japan, seasonality is the most integral part of Kaiseki, the traditional multi-course dinner. Only the freshest, local ingredients are used. It’s a concept that inspires Sachi year-round, but which really comes to life in autumn: right now, a lot of Japanese vegetables grown in the UK are in seasons.

Flavours of Autumn

The arrival of fresh, local mushrooms: tofu is served with mixed mushrooms and truffles, wagyu tataki with porcini mushrooms, and wagyu fillet with girolles. Like with the vegetables, the vast majority of our mushrooms are foraged in Britain, with some coming in from France.

A series of warming dishes have been designed to ease you into the colder months. Scottish trout marinated in miso, cooked over fire and served with chestnuts. Hand-dived scallops are served with a comforting smoked broth, while English pork is cooked over the robata grill and served with apple and barley.

MARVELLOUS!

The opening production of @sohoplace will be The New Vic’s much acclaimed production Marvellous, directed by Theresa Heskins. The New Vic theatre is the oldest purpose built, in-the-round theatre in the UK and @sohoplace is the first new West End theatre in 50 years, with a flexible, 602-seat auditorium, purpose built and opening in-the-round.

Marvellous is the joyful, inspiring true story of Neil ‘Nello’ Baldwin who, defying all expectations, has led and continues to lead, the most amazing life. Based on the 2015 BAFTA award winning film.

Growing up in the 1950’s in less enlightened times, Neil Baldwin was not expected to be a success. But Neil decided he was destined to do wonderful things and that his life was going to be marvellous. And it is. He hitchhiked across the country, became a famous clown, got an honorary degree from Keele University, was appointed Stoke City’s legendary kit man, appeared on the Queen’s New Year Honours list and accepted a BAFTA award for the film made about his life. A friend to anyone he meets, he became a local hero and an inspiration to the world.

A reminder to us all not to let anything stand in the way of your dreams, just go out and make them happen.

Nica Burns, Producer and Theatre Owner said: Marvellous is precisely that, marvellous. A

wonderful production of a heartwarming and uplifting tale about an extraordinary man who decided he would lead an exceptional life. And against all the odds, he has and does.

Theresa Heskins, New Vic Artistic Director said: What a thrill it is, to see a new theatre in the round opening in London! Nica’s decision to make a West End venue which deliberately nurtures an inclusive relationship between stage and audience is a radical one, and it’s matched by creative programming. Nello’s special magic rubs off on everyone he encounters and bringing that magic from audiences in Staffordshire to audiences in London will be such a privilege.

‘BEAUTIFUL PIECES FOR

NOTABLE PROJECTS – CROWN SYDNEY

Rarely do I sit back and reflect on how far I have come in my artistic career, however when my museum sized centrepiece ‘Verve’ made its debut in the VIP Gaming Room in August of this year, I did pause for a moment to appreciate and reflect.

An expansion of the design and interiors functionality of my practice, I am proud to have five custom commissions showcased at Crown Sydney, Australia’s most exclusive Resort and Casino. Featured in the Main Gaming Room’s Crystal Lounge, ‘Verve’ is

inspired by the rich and diverse Australian landscape, interpreting its vast sense of space and natural beauty with an ethereal spirit and sophisticated grace. Recessed within a purpose-built timber alcove this feature wall celebrates the interconnectedness between design and discourse. Achieving the highest standards of luxury finishes synonymous with the Crown Resorts brand, this bespoke feature wall evokes the sun-kissed earth, lush flora, and endless expanses of sea that defines the Australian landscape.

As with all Australian landmarks this epic centrepiece has been

strategically executed with intention and purpose; to honour the inherent rhythm and energy of the Australian landscape, and celebrate a nation made rich by the land and its people. Crown Sydney is also home to another four Olivia Collins originals –‘Eos’ and ‘Aura’ on the lobby level, ‘Artemis’ on the Sky Villa level and ‘Oceana’ featured in the luxurious One Barangaroo Penthouse.

UPCOMING EXHIBITS – THE OTHER ART FAIR

is key to designing an inspiring space and a sanctuary in which one can rejuvenate, evolve and bloom.

I feel the earthy palette in the Kintsugi works will strike a chord with many in this postcovid world who are striving for balance, peace and beauty in all aspects of life and design, and by contrast the bright and bold hues of the Tropicana pieces will bring to life the vivid colours and captivating forms of the tropical flowers we all know and love, such as the orchid, Bird of paradise, hibiscus and heliconia. The fusion of powerful shades of crimson, cadmium orange, indigo and violet will inject fresh energy, joy and passion into the Gaia collection with radiant effect. With a plan to branch into product design in the 2023 also, the leadup to Christmas and the New Year will certainly be a busy but fruitful time!

THE DETAILS

Having recently returned from a successful show at Singapore’s FIND Design Fair Asia, my next exhibit is The Other Art Fair (a division of Saatchi Art) at Barangaroo’s iconic Cutaway in Sydney. Taking place from December 1-4, I will be showcasing further pieces from my Gaia collection, which draws inspiration from biophilic design principles, celebrating earthy tones, subtle textures and natural forms. In the studio I am currently experimenting with incorporating the Japanese art of ‘Kintsugi’ into my atmospheric landscapes. Kintsugi refers to the process of repairing broken pottery with lacquer and powdered gold, silver or platinum. Making the imperfect finishes beautiful and turning them into a feature. This philosophy - to mend with love - certainly resonates with me. Artists are, by nature, healers, and my interior philosophy is also an extension of this process – balance between form, texture and colour

FIRST NEW-BUILD WEST END THEATRE IN 50 YEARS, TO OPEN AT SOHO PLACE

The first new build West End theatre in 50 years, opens this month. @sohoplace is adjacent to the site of the old Astoria theatre which was demolished to build Crossrail, and close to Tottenham Court Road station at the heart of Derwent London’s £300m regeneration project at the north east corner of Soho.

Owned by Nica Burns OBE, a multi-awardwinning theatre producer and operated by Nimax Theatres, there will be a state-of-the-art new and flexible 602-seat auditorium with perfect sightlines, acoustics and creatives’ floor with rehearsal room, actors’ Green Room, bar and terrace.

Dine at their beautiful new ground floor restaurant, stars. Open from midday to midnight, offering a delicious, contemporary European menu cooked with the finest British produce, classic and modern cocktails, craft beers, and an expertly curated wine list.

The auditorium sits directly above Crossrail’s new Elizabeth line and the existing Northern and Central lines at Tottenham Court Road station, a major transport hub. Totalling 285,000 square feet it is a mixed development with the theatre at its heart, offices and retail and a fantastic new piazza, an ideal meeting place for Londoners to start their day or night out in the West End. Derwent London picked a first-class team to overcome the engineering challenges of building a theatre immediately above three tube lines and Crossrail’s large extractor fan to achieve perfect acoustics in the auditorium with no vibrations

The theatre interior was inspired by Nica’s visit to Epidaurus when young. She says “I was

standing on the stage of this great ancient theatre at 8 o’clock - show time - as the last rays of a golden sun were coming through the trees and the stars were starting to twinkle in an indigo sky. It was magic. Epidaurus is one of the greatest theatres in the world and the plays of ancient Greece are still part of our theatre heritage today. The interior of @sohoplace reflects these colours and when you walk through the theatre you walk under crystal star lights, laid out in constellations. When you pass the building, look up to the terrace and you will see the constellations shine.”

The building is accessible to wheelchairs, with access toilet facilities on all levels and backstage.

FOSTERING CURIOSITY

AYear 6 curriculum focused on delivering skills that are important for future success, with no formal SAT testing, fosters curiosity for the important journey into Key Stage 3 and beyond, says the new Head of King’s Magna Middle School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), Joseph Birchall.

“At QE, our mission is for all members of our community to aspire to the Hill Standard ‘To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have. As Head of King’s Magna, the middle school of QE’s unique fourschool model, we harness this individuality through an innovative curriculum. This is a curriculum which supports the transition between the Collegiate’s primary education at Chapter House, our Preparatory school, and the demands of GCSEs and beyond in our two senior schools.”

“In a difference from the traditional school model where children stay in primary education until the end of Year 6, here at QE students join King’s Magna in Year 6, and stay with us until Year 9. We find many students are ready for a new challenge at the end of Year 5, so we made it our focus to develop a unique curriculum for this transitional year, with content designed in partnership between

secondary school subject specialists and highly experienced primary age teachers.”

“Importantly, we have made a crucial decision not to assess our Year 6 students using SATS testing. Students are instead assessed formally at three points during the year using standardised and moderated “common evaluation tasks” - these are used to track progress and identify what each student can do and what they could do to improve further. This decision allows us to focus on delivering those skills that the students need to be successful in Key Stage 3 and beyond.”

“Our all-encompassing, holistic approach to developing the whole student, which is at the heart of everything we do here at QE, creates a supportive, vibrant and caring school environment throughout King’s Magna. We are committed to equipping our students with the skills and knowledge they need to move seamlessly to our College or Faculty at the end of Year 9, growing and maturing into their teenage years with confidence.” Joseph Birchall – Head of King’s Magna Middle School

All fired up for London to Brighton Veteran Car Run 2022

In true tradition, the Royal Automobile Club, in partnership with RM Sotheby’s, will be staging the remarkable event on the first Sunday in November. Crowds can expect a magnificent spectacle with the rare opportunity to watch more than 350+ owners of prized pre-1905 horseless carriages embark upon a 60-mile journey from Hyde Park to Madeira Drive on Brighton’s

Last year’s very special 125th anniversary edition of the world’s longest running motoring event was widely acclaimed as one of the best ever. The Veteran Car Run commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14 November 1896, which celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act. It was this Act that raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 mph to 14 mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag. A group of intrepid early motorists set off from London for the Sussex coast to mark the life-changing moment when motorists were finally given the freedom of the open road and the arrival of a new era of mechanical horsepower.

On leaving Hyde Park at the break of dawn at 7am, the veteran cars will pass many iconic

landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Horseguards and Big Ben before crossing Westminster Bridge.

THE DETAILS

Participants then leave London via two routes to avoid congestion - one via Clapham Common, Balham, Tooting and Mitcham and the other via Brixton and Streatham Common. Uniting just north of Croydon, the route continues past Sutton on the A217 to Banstead, Tadworth, Reigate and Redhill. From there it takes the A23 to Horley and Crawley where the route heads to Brighton via Pease Pottage, Staplefield, Cuckfield, Ansty, Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Clayton where it joins the A23 for the run into the finish at Madeira Drive.

For more details of the 2022 RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, visit veterancarrun.com.

The route ensures there are plenty of fabulous viewing spots for the many thousands of spectators who line the streets to wave the veterans on their way.

Sandbanks Jets however, have taken the experience to new heights as they continue to pave the way with their innovative approach to the industry and attention to detail, which can be encapsulated by their tag line, ‘The Ride of Your Life’.

Sandbanks Jets have carefully chosen a select group of partners with the intention of enhancing the customer experience, including teaming up with one of the most prestigious stores in the world, Harrods, to provide their onboard retailing. They have also been welcomed into ‘The Sunseeker Family’ by the prestigious Sunseeker London Group enabling them to work closely with mutual clients to offer luxury yacht charter and transfer opportunities. The all female team are not content at stopping there, as their ability to recognise what could exceed the clients expectations now leads them to offer an exciting and delicious onboard catering experience that will be developed with Rick Stein Restaurants.

BENTLEY MULLINER

ICONIC SPEED SIX TO BE BORN AGAIN

RECREATING AN ICON

To deliver 12 new Speed Sixes that are authentic to the design of the racers of 1929 and 1930, the Mulliner team has first created a complete 3D CAD model of the car, from both the original blueprints and detailed analysis of original cars. Two cars have been referenced for this process.

Bentley Mulliner is to bring the iconic Speed Six back to life with a new and highly exclusive Continuation Series of 12 cars, each mechanically and aesthetically authentic to the Bentley racers that won Le Mans in 1929 and 1930.

Created to honour the achievements of the original cars and while continuing to develop and preserve Mulliner’s heritage skills, the new Speed Sixes will become the second pre-war continuation project in the world after the Blower - both created by Bentley Mulliner.

The most successful Bentley racing car of its era, the Speed Six is regarded as one of the most important Bentleys in history, winning Le Mans in 1929 and 1930 at the hands of Woolf Barnato, Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin and Glen Kidston.

Not only further demonstrating the marque’s world-beating performance credentials but also proving the concept of the Grand Tourer – a fast car that remained comfortable and luxurious, and capable of covering huge distances with ease. Every Bentley since has followed the same ethos.

The 12-car series has been designed, and will be developed and built, by the same team of Mulliner specialists that have created the Blower Continuation Series – the first pre-war continuation project in the world. This acclaimed run of 12 new 4½ litre ‘Blower’ Bentleys was based on the company’s own 1929 Team Car #2 – the most famous and valuable Bentley in the world, which raced alongside the Speed Six in 1930 – and sold out instantly. The same is true of the new Speed Six continuations, with all 12 cars already reserved by lucky customers around the world.

The Mulliner team will once again be supported by an incredible array of artisans from a number of automotive heritage specialists across the UK, delivering recreation parts that are not only physically identical but in many cases are crafted using the same techniques used in the 1920s. This dedication to complete and total authenticity is integral to the success of such a complex project.

“Old Number 3” was the third of three Speed Sixes entered by Bentley into Le Mans in 1930. Despite a difficult race it survived the ordeal and has been immaculately preserved since. Still fully road legal and actively raced by its owner today, Old Number 3 has been a valuable source of design details and reference points for the creation of the new cars.

Alongside Old Number 3, Bentley’s own Speed Six (GU409) – part of Bentley’s expanding Heritage Collection – is a 1929 road car wearing an identical four-seat Vanden Plas body to the original racers and restored to the same specification. GU409 will provide benchmark performance and handling data for the continuation cars, including a full power and torque curve for the 12 new engines to match – or beat.

The first new Speed Six in 92 years will be assembled in the second half of this year and become the engineering test and development car for the project. Speed Six Car Zero will be retained by Bentley, joining Blower Car Zero as the forebears of the families they help to deliver. bentleymotors.com

A DOG’S LIFE

There’s nothing better than buying a Christmas present for someone that benefits you too - cheeky but very tempting and satisfying.

When buying for the dog this year, why not invest in some Ruff and Tumble products, which do just that?

Drying and stylish on dogs and time saving and practical for humans, they are a double winner.

Drying Coats dry dogs completely - unlike towels - and all you have to do is pop it over the dog’s head, fasten with velcro and watch the dog dry itself. Two layers of thick cotton towelling wick wet from the dog’s hair and they are so comfy and warm to wear, dogs love them. In 17 sizes from XXXSGiant Mountain Dog, from £31.95-£69.95, and eight stock colours, all breeds from 1-120Kg can find one to suit them.

Match with a pair of Drying Mitts, £21.95, and the legs and paws will be dried easily and quickly too. These make a great stocking filler or a present for the new dog owner/dog lover. Hung up by the back door or in the car, muddy paws on floors are stopped in their tracks.

Pupils choose from 20 subjects at GCSE and A Level. Personal mentors support each child outside lesson hours. A dynamic weekly timetable includes live lessons, virtual assemblies, after school clubs, wellbeing sessions, and an exciting co-curricular learning programme called “World Changers” that tackles the most urgent issues of the day. Minerva’s Virtual Academy is run by Headmaster Lawrence Tubb, who taught at Wycombe Abbey for nine years, and is supported by a team of outstanding teachers and mentors who’ve come together to re-define what’s possible for school-age children in the 21st century.

• Pupils can receive a world class education at home, anywhere in the world

• Pupils can study at speeds that suit them - they are no longer held back or silenced by the class majority

• Anxious pupils can gain confidence by leaving the pressure of the traditional school behind them

• Pupils receive higher quality one-to-one attention via personal mentors

• Parents are closer to their children on a daily basis, helping to create strong family bonds

‘We think the pandemic has been an opportunity for us to reflect on what is important and we are getting very comfortable with the fact that there are many paths to success for children and that traditional school does not always bring out the best in every child. Overall, Minerva has been a life-saver for all of us. It has been a great experience and it has brought out the best in our daughter.’

70 OCTOBER 2022
Catwalk shows featured moments honouring the late monarch. By Katie Wright.
HOW DESIGNERS PAID TRIBUTE TO THE QUEEN AT LONDON FASHION WEEK

London Fashion Week was swiftly scaled back following the announcement of the death of the Queen – a longstanding supporter of the UK’s largest creative industry – just a week before the biannual event was due to begin.

“As a business-to-business event London Fashion Week will continue while observing Royal Protocol and the event will be dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with our own moments of respect,” the British Fashion Council said in a statement.

“Having spoken to designers and industry members, we as an industry want to unite as a creative and business community to celebrate Her Majesty’s legacy and commitment to creativity and design.”

Parties were called off, some catwalk shows (including high profile designers such as Burberry and Raf Simons) were cancelled or postponed, and all presentations due to take place on the day of the funeral were rescheduled.

Designers who did go ahead as planned paid tribute to the late Queen on the catwalk in a variety of ways. Here’s how London Fashion Week’s big names marked the occasion during a subdued spring/summer edition…

S.S. DALEY

Winner of the LVMH Prize for Young Designers, Steven Stokey-Daley’s third runway presentation was based around a

dramatised reading of the love letters between Vita Sackville West and Violet Trefusis.

The show opened with bells tolling, before seven black-clad models carrying white candles processed down the catwalk – which many saw as a mournful tribute to the late Queen.

“I was the first to tell her [my grandmother] the Queen had died, and she burst into tears on the phone. And I don’t know why, I felt really emotional about that,” Stokey-Daley told Vogue, admitting he has mixed feelings about the royal family: “I grapple with my personal standpoint on the monarchy, as regards to class.”

NENSI DOJAKA

Attendees at up-and-coming designer Nensi Dojaka’s show walked over a white petal-strewn floor to reach their seats (white flowers are often used in memorial bouquets).

On the catwalk, models including Emily Ratajkowski carried delicate floral sprigs during the finale – thought to be lily of the valley, one of the Queen’s favourite flowers.

JW ANDERSON

Perhaps the most literal tribute of London Fashion Week came at the JW Anderson show, which was held in a casino arcade against a backdrop of neon-lit gambling machines.

The final look at the colourful collection was an oversized black T-shirt dress emblazoned with a simple ‘Thank you’ message to the late monarch.

CHRISTOPHER KANE

A minute’s silence was held in remembrance of the Queen before Christopher Kane’s show at London’s iconic Roundhouse venue.

The SS23 collection featured Kane’s signature blend of the weird (prints straight out of human anatomy textbooks and transparent latex straps that gave models fake six-packs) and the wonderful

OCTOBER 2022 73

(pastel-hued blouses and lacy LBDs), as well as vibrant floral prints reminiscent of the kind the monarch used to wear.

In the show notes Kane said he was inspired by “the young Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret roaming the grounds of Balmoral”, and a cape detail jumper and skirt combo was inspired by the Queen in her last official photograph.

HALPERN

Michael Halpern honoured the memory of Queen Elizabeth II with the regal opening look of his show, which was presented in silence.

Inspired by a conversation Halpern had with the late monarch, in which he expressed his love of ostentation, the billowing blue cape was topped with a mint green headscarf similar to the kind worn offduty by Her Majesty.

ERDEM

Erdem Moralioglu, a designer popular with royals including the Princess of Wales, dedicated his SS23 collection to the late Queen, citing one of her most famous quotes in his show notes: “Grief is the price we pay for love.”

A collection of largely pastel, white and chartreuse dresses in the designer’s typically ornate style was bookended with a handful

of black and white Fifties-style tailoring and full-skirted evening looks, topped with black mourning veils.

RICHARD QUINN

The late monarch famously sat front row at Richard Quinn in 2018 and presented the young designer (now a major fixture on the LFW schedule) with the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design.

Recalling that iconic moment, the London-born talent dedicated SS23 to the Queen, opening the show with a series of all-black looks featuring many of her sartorial signatures – from headscarves and crowns to belted coats and ballgowns –while archive footage from her youth played on a big screen.

Black confetti rained down on the catwalk during the finale, the dramatic show celebrating the life of Quinn’s most high profile and influential supporter.

The fitted furniture files

What the design world is coming to realise more than ever recently, is that what defines a home, is you. The people living in it. The modern home is focusing on expressing the personalities within it through decoration and design. This could be by displaying meaningful, memory-filled objects, by planning a room around a treasured work of art or by more actively placing the needs and preferences of a house’s occupants at the core of how it looks and functions. Houses are becoming as unique as the people within them, telling their stories and revealing their personalities.

That’s where fitted furniture comes in, pieces of practical storage created precisely for the space you need them in.

Think of fitted furniture and what first comes to mind may not be hugely inspiring. We’re here to prove you wrong. It’s an art form, not only designed to fit specifically into the space you need it in, but – yes – beautiful, creative, expressive as well as the very definition of useful.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about a bespoke piece that slides perfectly into place. Perhaps there’s an element of ASMR to it: look at how it lines up so perfectly with the ceiling. See how it fits so smoothly into that alcove. Watch how it skirts around the bumps in the wall. Feel how smoothly those doors glide open. Oooo.

Fitted furniture is about making the most of every centimetre. About stretching up high, adding an extra shelf, making room for more pairs of shoes or finally creating somewhere to house that LP collection. It makes life easier and rooms smarter.

Chaplins’ range of beautiful, designer fitted furniture is ready

and waiting to be crafted into shape around you, your home and those objects that you most care about, whatever they may be. The in-house fitted furniture expert Denis Barclay knows every trick in the fitted furniture book: here he talks through everything you need to know to ready your room for a bespoke storage piece.

How can Chaplins help with fitted furniture?

We offer a complete design and installation service. In the first instance, you are invited into our showroom to browse the options –during this initial meeting, we discuss the space you are considering and how you want to use the area, as well as any ideas you have and designs you like so we can make suggestions to better meet your brief.

We then work from your plans or visit your home, depending on the stage of the project. It’s also important to establish the budget.

What falls under the category of ‘fitted furniture’? It’s more than wardrobes, right?

Over the 35 years, I have been involved

84 OCTOBER 2022 HOME & GARDEN

with the furniture business, there are not many spaces that I have not planned fitted furniture for, inside or outside, be it under the stairs, boot rooms, TV rooms, studies, libraries, bedrooms, dressing rooms and craft workshops. Modular furniture is very adaptable. It’s only limited by the imagination, and of course the budget.

Which designer brands offer fitted furniture?

We work with premium Italian brands Lema, Molteni&C and Porro, and heritage German company Interlübke. They are modern and sleek, with finishes ranging from matt and high gloss lacquers to glass, metals, ceramics and veneers. There’s a lot to choose from.

Our Lema wardrobe studio showcases different styles of wardrobe in a range of finishes. We also have a door bar showing a small format selection of doors options.

What do I need to know before my fitted furniture consultation? Do I need to get out the tape measure? The more information you can bring, then the more meaningful the initial meeting will be. Generally, we ask customers to have photos of the space, or architect’s plans if it’s under construction. It’s also helpful to really consider your storage requirements so that we can make best use of the space available.

What’s the timeline between consultation to installation?

WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP? DO I NEED TO COME INTO THE SHOWROOM? WHO DO I TALK TO?

Call us or email us at sales@chaplins.co.uk and we’ll discuss the best way to get started.

For more ideas on bespoke designer storage, see chaplins. co.uk, or book an appointment to visit the 25,000 sq ft luxury lifestyle showroom in Hatch End where you’ll find the latest shelves, doors and finishes under one roof.

After the first discussion, we’ll produce an initial plan and costing, then the process develops from there. In some instances, it can be very quick, while larger projects can take months. Then of course it takes 10-12 weeks for the furniture to be made and delivered from the factory. Installation is quick – it usually takes a day for a conventional room, to a week or more on a larger project.

THE MOST COMMONLY ASKED BATHROOM QUESTIONS

WITH BATHROOM DESIGN SPECIALIST RIPPLES.

With over 30 years experience designing bathrooms, the team at Ripples understands that the process can sometimes be daunting. Its designers are experts on all aspects of bathrooms and here, Senior Designer Faye Young from Ripples Bournemouth showroom answers some of the most commonly asked bathroom-related questions.

With Pinterest, Instagram and other great tools, can’t I just design my bathroom myself? Do I really need a bathroom designer? Although there are a lot of great tools out there to give you style inspiration these days, there are so many other things to be considered when designing a bathroom. Considerations around plumbing, electrics and room layout are best handled by a professional. If you are anything like me, you will have a lot of images on your

Pinterest boards or magazine collection, encompassing a number of different styles. A Ripples designer can work with you to narrow down your choices, incorporating your inspiration into one cohesive scheme. Designers can also take the stress out of sourcing all of the product for your space, using their specialist knowledge to find the products which will work best for you. This will give you more time to focus on the more fun parts of your project!

What lighting do I need in a bathroom?

The first level of lighting needed for all bathrooms will be either downlights or a central light. This is controlled by one switch and gives you the overall lighting needed for general use and cleaning. The next level of lighting is task lighting. This could include lighting within your mirror or wall lights either side of the mirror. Wherever possible, go for side rather than top lighting to give a good overall lighting with minimal shadows – perfect for getting ready on dark winter mornings. The next level of lighting to consider is mood lighting. Low level lighting is key in a bathroom especially one with a bath or in an en-suite. This can be incorporated in soft spot lighting or strip lighting on top of recesses, by a bath or underneath a vanity unit. Having this on a separate switch means early mornings, late nights and even any middle-of-the-night trips to the bathroom are not disturbed by bright lights coming on. In a family bathroom, you may also want to consider a PIR (passive infrared) sensor. As children get older they can then go into the bathroom at night on their own and lights will automatically come on.

• Heating: opt for dual fuel heating as this can dramatically reduce energy usage in your home. You can control dual fuel radiators with a timer and use heated towel rails to heat the bathroom, without having to heat the rest of the home

• Lighting: LED spotlights and feature lighting use approximately 85% less energy than traditional bulbs

• Extractor fans: choosing an extractor fan with a builtin timer and/or humidity sensor will use less energy as it switches off when not in use

• Surfaces: glass surfaces are one of the greenest options available as they can keep being recycled again and again

• Cold-start taps: cold-start taps are normal mixer taps which start running cold water first. These are great if you have a combi boiler as they don’t kick in unless you manually change the mixer across to hot

• Reclaimed furniture: love the ‘lived-in’ look? Consider incorporating vintage or upcycled pieces within your bathroom, such as vanity units, mirrors and shelving

Should I use big or small tiles in a smaller bathroom?

Generally, I advise using larger tiles, no matter the size of the space. This reduces the amount of grout needed

which makes for easier cleaning and fewer grout lines give a more polished look. That being said, with the amount of beautiful feature tiles out there, a mix of the two can work well. In a smaller bathroom it is more important to consider how product and tiles align, the areas of the room which are (and are not) going to be tiled and the grout colour.

Shall I opt for underfloor heating?

With a tiled bathroom floor, I would always recommend underfloor heating as it gives you ambient warmth, whatever the season. If you have a floor-tiled shower tray, underfloor heating can be incorporated underneath, helping to dry up water and keeping you warm underfoot whilst showering. Underfloor heating can even be taken up walls and onto tiled seats for an indulgent, spa-like experience. Underfloor heating is also a great selling point for the property as it’s a feature that cannot be retrofitted.

OXLEY’S:

CIRCULAR BUSINESS

Acircular economy demonstrates the process of using, consuming, restoring and reusing raw products or materials thus extending a products life cycle, or in Oxley’s case, ensuring their sustainable outdoor furniture has no end of life. Businesses have a duty to work in a truly sustainable and circular way, taking responsibility for their products. Moving away from a ‘take, make, waste’ economy benefitting the environment, customers and the business.

Oxley’s has always strived to be a truly sustainable business, making the decision to use 100% recycled aluminium for their products over 30 years ago when the business started. Aluminium is an unsung success story of the sustainable world and is one of the most recycled elements on the planet. Using 100% recycled aluminium saves 95% of the energy needed to create new aluminium, and due to it being infinitely recycled it can be used over and over again and won’t lose its quality. The perfect material

for Oxley’s main aim, building luxury outdoor furniture to last generations in the most sustainable way possible.

Oxley’s have recently launched a unique buy back guarantee that allows them to run in a truly circular way. This sustainable buy back guarantee means that once customers have owned their furniture for a year, Oxley’s will buy it back for half the original purchase price up to 10 years later. The furniture is taken back to the Oxley’s factory in the Cotswolds, repurposed and given a new home. Just because it is intended to last generations, doesn’t mean it has to stay in the same family.

Simon Hudson, managing director of Oxley’s Furniture states “We have always made luxury outdoor furniture in a sustainable way so it is logical that we should be the first in our industry to take this next important step of making Oxley’s a truly circular business. There will be new challenges ahead, but we are all excited to have made this decision and to see where it takes us. Just because we make furniture to last generations, doesn’t after all mean it has to stay in the same family”.

Oxley’s are a prime example of taking full responsibility for their products and ensuring there is no end of life. For customers, this means they can own the furniture they want risk free. For the business, it means highest quality materials can be sourced directly from customers. For the environment, it means less energy is used and less waste produced. oxleys.com

BEAUTIFUL BIRDS

100 OCTOBER 2022

According to Megan Slack at Homes & Gardens, bird motifs are trending because they represent freedom, optimism, and the ability to escape. In addition to bird motifs, biophilic designs have featured on Real Homes roundup of wallpaper trends - and of course maximalist patterns are everywhere. The Caged Bird collection takes inspiration from these trends and reimagines them with birds in captivity, including elements both vintage and modern.

Four of the designs in the collection feature a different species of bird in a cage - either real or metaphorical. Magpie and Pigeon are more traditional patterns, while Rifle and Roller have more modern lines.

Magpie has the namesake bird flying amid irises, seemingly aware of the mesh cage which surrounds them. Look closely in Pigeon, and you will see leg bands on a few of the birds.

Rifle has a vibrant teal background with a modern gate illustration - with other flora and fauna around, the birds look to find freedom.

Roller is a linear barbed wire print with the bird guarding its eggs. Feather, a supporting pattern, is a dense motif of abstract feathers in the collection’s signature teal colour.

Teal is the focal point of the collection - a timeless colour which, according to colour psychology expert Karen Haller on The Design Sheppard, evokes feelings of tranquillity, calm, peace, and balancea direct contrast to the feelings of being held captive.

Mara Nieuwsma, Managing Director, comments on her colour choices: “I was drawn to the vivid teal feathers of the rifle and roller, and wanted to carry this hue through the collection, balanced with black, greys and beiges to make the designs more versatile. The cages arrived naturally through the creative process, in a desire to add something unexpected to a familiar motif.” northandnether.com

North Yorkshire, UK - North & Nether’s newest wallpaper collection, Caged Bird, has been unveiled today. The sixth collection in the brand’s catalogue, Caged Bird features vintage bird illustrations with a trademark North & Nether twist.

Bursting with vibrancy directly from nature or laced with metallic yarns for a more opulent Art Deco feel, Exotica 2 carries the classic look of Clarke & Clarke with its refined and sophisticated style in each print.

Jessica Killen, senior designer at Clarke & Clarke explains, “We are always looking at new and exciting ways to develop our textiles and working closely with the mills helps to achieve this. Comprising nine fabrics and matching wallpaper, Exotica 2 has a distinctly more opulent feel than its predecessor - for example, we’ve added metallic highlights to Selva’s velvet jacquard and introduced bronze/antique into our colour palette, evoking a glamorous feel across all our designs.”

The collection includes Passiflora, one of Clarke & Clarke’s bestselling designs with its vibrant passionflower trail, jewel tones and metallic highlights. Starting life as a painting, Tahiti, another feature design, shares a rich colour palette and standout painterly bouquet. Named after the tropical rainforest in Central Africa, Congo is printed using deep, dramatic colours. Available as both a soft velvet and statement wallpaper, it possesses all the qualities of an oil painting.

THE GARDEN DESIGN PROCESS

At Modular we believe garden design is the most exciting of all the design disciplines, but we would say that! As well as a well-designed garden being an inviting, beautiful and practical space it’s increasingly viewed as a haven to immerse ourselves in; somewhere to escape the stresses of everyday life and connect with the natural world.

The bigger picture.

A garden should work on many levels. Developing a great garden is extremely rewarding for a few keen homeowners, but hugely frustrating for others. Perhaps you’ve lived with the same garden for years yet are still way off realising your dream space or have recently bought a property with a garden or roof terrace and just don’t know where to start?

Setting off on the right track with a vision and plan is critical to its success. Good design marries the clients brief (style/function), with the build and planting budget to create a space that is greater than the sum of its parts.

God is in the details. The Architect Mies van der Rohe famously said this and at Modular we agree. The technical design stage

before the build captures key design details such as levels, steps, surfaces, boundaries, lighting and irrigation etc. with pinpoint accuracy to ensure a slick build and a high-end finish on site.

Right plant right place.

Plants breathe the life into a garden. In the UK they inspire us to celebrate all four seasons and are an essential resource for wildlife. Trees, large shrubs, hedging and clipped shapes provide the year-round structure so that perennials and bulbs can create impact at key times of the year with their colours and textures. Choosing the right plants for the right place (aspect, soil etc.) so they not only thrive but combine beautifully together is where the artistry of great garden design comes into own.

At Modular we have wealth of experience and expertise offering the full range of design, construction, and planting services and guide our clients through every step of the process. We only have one aim, to create an outdoor space that exceeds your expectations.

LUXURY FLOORING PERSONIFIED

Having spent over 20 years supplying, installing and restoring wooden floors, Southern Cross Flooring are perfectly placed to understand the unique benefits that such a floor brings to the home.

In fact, since the start of this year they have arguably positioned themselves even more perfectly by moving the business from a small, hard-to-find workshop in Kew to a recently refurbished industrial unit in the heart of Twickenham. Not only are they now far better equipped to stock and showcase their floor products, but the move also coincided with a distribution partnership with new brand Wood Connexions, who bring the highest-quality engineered wood floors to the market.

The premises has a dedicated showroom and meeting space on the 1st floor, with the idea being that less is more. “We are all too aware how overwhelmed with choice customers can be when investing in a new wood floor,” company director Matt Wiggins says. “So our goal is to offer premium quality products in a simple of range of colours that can suit almost any design palette.”

To that end, Southern Cross and Wood Connexions offer their customers (whether they are homeowners or in the trade) a range of 10 UV Oiled colours in 15x180mm European Engineered Oak. These floors are perfect for use on underfloor heating and, thanks to the 4mm oak wear layer, can be restored up to 3 times over the course of its life, which could be as long as 40 or 50 years with the

right care.

The colour spectrum spans from the dark end through the neutral tones and on to the light and white-washed, while each colour is also available in timeless herringbone parquet as well.

Once the dream floor has been found customers don’t then need to find a fitter either, with Southern Cross employing in-house installers to offer a complete all-in-one service to their customers.

British-led design preserves Belgravia coach house style

Abespoke up and over garage door beautifully designed and manufactured by Rundum Meir has brought 21st century functionality, access and security to a Grade II listed property in London’s exclusive Belgravia.

One objective of the renovation project by RDB Architecture & Interiors sought to provide improved access to the garage of the property, which is located on one of the capital’s most desirable residential streets close to Eaton Square Gardens. This had to be done in a way that was sympathetic to the local architecture and compliant with the house’s listed status.

The garage doors of the properties lining this cobblestone street are fine examples of the 19th century coach house tradition. Hence, any attempt to dramatically alter the external appearance of the doors would be detrimental to the elegant appeal of this upmarket neighbourhood and flatly refused by council planners.

This was the ideal project for Rundum Meir, who custom manufacture every one of their garage doors to a suit a project’s exacting requirements. Here, the client brief was to retain the look of the existing swing opening garage door, but enable up and over automated functionality for improved access and to make best use of the available space.

A timber engineered door was the solution, finished in traditional black and complete with the original heavy cast iron Charles Collinge hinges. The door was manufactured by Rundum Meir’s skilled craftsmen at its factory in Germany, who also designed and built the overhead mechanism to comfortably accommodate

its significant weight. Once manufactured, the garage door was weighed to enable the design of the correct spring counterbalance system and deliver many years of reliable operation.

Danesch Missaghian, owner manager at Rundum Meir (UK) said: “The coach house is one of the most defining features of the British Victorian mews house, so it is vital that we preserve this tradition whilst making such properties suitable for today’s world. In being able to manufacture every garage door to meet very specific requirements, satisfying planners in the process, our customers do not have to make compromises as the bespoke up and over door at this property in Belgravia clearly demonstrates.”

All Rundum Meir garage doors are designed here in the UK, manufactured in Germany and transported to the UK for assembly in readiness for installation. Every door is manufactured using the highest quality materials such as solid timber and tough extruded aluminium which can be insulated.

To achieve the best possible garage door solution, architects in the UK, as well as across Europe and in the USA, can take advantage of Rundum Meir’s specialist design advice and expert technical support to help turn design concepts into reality.

RIMADESIO LONDON

Rimadesio, the leading Italian brand in design furniture, has chosen the city of London to inaugurate its first flagship store in the United Kingdom: a space of about 300 square meters conceived to engage architects, interior designers, and international clients.

Located in a contemporary building at 83-85 Wigmore Street - in the heart of the West End - the monobrand has been designed by Giuseppe Bavuso, who headed a complete renovation process and energy efficiency intervention over a 15-month period.

The space is developed on two levels connected by a LEDlightened overhanging staircase: the colour scheme of the rooms plays on the warm tones of walnut, bronzed metals and grey Vicenza stone, that covers the floor and all the perimeter walls. The project stands out for accurate materials research and an architectural vision of the interiors.

On the outside, two large windows look out the street revealing the best of the Rimadesio offer, which includes iconic proposals and the latest novelties, such as the Modulor wall panelling system. The unique display concept aims at highlighting the quality, excellence and typological variety of the collection.

“The London opening represents a fundamental step in the consolidation strategy of our network” – General Manager Giulio Malberti comments. “This is the third flagship store managed directly by our family company, after the ones opened in Milan and New York”.

Gathering all the distinctive components of the brand, the space is designed to offer an accurate consultancy and project service in the residential, contract and hospitality field. It is also a workplace available to all Rimadesio dealers: a meeting point for events, training sessions and corporate awareness.

CORPORATE OVERVIEW

Founded in 1956, Italy’s Rimadesio produces systems for subdividing environments and for the architectural definition of internal spaces – doors, sliding panels, shelving units, walk-in wardrobes and a collection of complementary furniture including sideboards, bedroom storage, tables, and bookcases.

Rimadesio is known for its expert manipulation of glass and aluminum and their compositional juxtaposition with other materials to engender new aesthetics.

A steadily expanding horizon witnesses the brand presence in over 90 countries in the world. A result that confirms the international features of Rimadesio’s living proposals, a style distinguished by rigorous planning, basic design, and technical innovation that can interpret topicality throughout the world, from New York to London, from Milan to Geneve, from Houston to Sydney.

With a geographical perspective of the most prestigious cities, Rimadesio conveys its quality in the continuously emerging capital cities through a series of exhibition sites located in the most exclusive urban frameworks.

International showrooms develop the corporate vision of design through fittings distinguished by the utmost rigour, and offer a complete, updated view of the collection.

CROWN PAVILIONS

Since appearing on ITV’s Love Your Garden, the British public have sought out Crown Pavilions and their unique luxury gazebos and garden rooms. With a VIP list of discerning customers, including Lord Alan Sugar and Duncan Bannatyne, Crown Pavilions is often described by those in the know as the best in the business.

So what makes a Crown Pavilions garden building so special? Crown Pavilion’s CEO Luke Dejahang attributes this to what is known within the company as the Crown Marque of Excellence. “We only use the finest sustainably sourced materials and craftsmen to create what we consider to be the World’s finest garden rooms. Underpinning everything is our meticulous attention to detail and five-star customer service.”

Luxury Gazebos – Year round alfresco cooking, dining, lounging & entertaining

A luxury wooden gazebo from Crown Pavilions creates a unique space in heart of your garden where you can entertain friends, cook, serve sumptuous suppers and party long into the night. Or, if you prefer the quieter life, a blissful space where you can relax over breakfast, laze away a summer’s afternoon or simply sit back and enjoy a good book.

There are 14 models to choose from, for gardens of every size and shape. They all come with dining and lounging furniture and luxurious soft furnishings as standard. The marine grade canvas side blinds offer protection and flexibility – they can be dropped down and zipped together during inclement weather and rolled them up in the sunshine. You can also customise your cushion and blind colours to taste, add heating and even upgrade with a woodfired oven for larger models.

Garden Rooms – Insulated garden offices, gyms, bars, cinemas, teenage dens and more…

A Crown Pavilions insulated garden room, built to residential standards is for those seeking additional living space. However, unlike a bricks and mortar extension a garden room can be built in just a few short weeks and in many cases planning permission is not

required.

With many still working from home, garden offices are still in high demand. A Crown Pavilions luxury garden room can be used for so much more than work though. “Garden bars, cinemas and gyms are three of our most popular projects. We’re also seeing more customers ask for multi-functional space”, adds Luke Dejahang.

The use of traditional timber building methods sets Crown Pavilions apart. Their buildings are built on site with 6’x2’ and 4’x2’ timber studs, joists and structural steels where necessary. The company also holds a TRADA certification from the Timber Research and Development Association which means everything is compliant and correct – from the timber sizing, insulation and joist spacing through to ventilation, fixtures and fittings. The result is a residential grade living space on par with the rest of your home.
