When you are gearing up for a special event such as a wedding or any black-tie affair, good may not be good enough. Off-the-rack options often fall short of capturing that standout essence. When you want to ensure your attire not only meets the dress code, but exceeds aesthetically, every detail matters. So how can a gentleman stand out when the invitation says “black tie” and everyone is wearing black? Tatyana Kozhevnikova, owner & creative director at Artefact London bespoke tailoring, talks us through the various aspects.

ELYSTAN STREET

Unobtrusively superlative is an almost impossible thing to pull off in a restaurant, but Elystan Street achieves it with a combination of flawless food and a space that makes everyone feel wittier and prettier. Opened by acclaimed restaurateur Rebecca Mascarenhas and chef Phil Howard in September 2016, the restaurant had been in business for just 6 months before receiving their Michelin star, which they’ve retained ever since. It is a rare feat to create a restaurant that appeals in equal measure to a loyal, local clientele as well as to those who have made this a destination spot. Alongside Phil Howard, the head chef is Michael Olive who hails from Buckinghamshire, and has been in the role for nearly a year, having previously worked at The Ledbury and at Elystan Street as a sous chef earlier in his career.

Elystan Street offers one of the best value set lunch and early evening menus in London – priced at just £35.00 for 3 courses. And if that doesn’t grab your fancy, you can always stray “ off piste” and enjoy the full a la carte menu. Phil and his kitchen team are maestros of seasonal food, so you’ll always get something on this menu that tastes better than it really ought to, because, unlike Paddington Bear, it hasn’t

been shipped in from darkest Peru in the middle of winter.

Elystan Street’s food is so sharply sophisticated yet so unassumingly generous that it’s worth investigating quite how it works so exceptionally well. Phil’s cooking is reputed for its harmony of flavours, rather than technical wizardry or innovation.

The wine list at Elystan Street has been brilliantly constructed by sommelier, Juliet Doughty, who is usually on hand with sensible, yet enthusiastic and creative dish pairing choices. Perhaps it has something to do with the balance of talent between kitchen and service, but it feels like everything and everyone here is working hard to make eating here truly pleasurable, whether it is a relaxed family Sunday lunch, a general catch up with mates, or a corporate dinner in the sublime private dining room.

Restaurants open and close all the time – it’s a precarious business – but this one will be around for decades to come – it’s a gem and worth the detour, wherever you are in the Capital.

Her striking pieces, often incorporating the figure within captivating images of flowers and foliage have graced galleries in Beirut, Milan, Venice, Brussels, and London as well as around the UK.

Born in Fontainebleau, France of Irish extraction she spent her childhood in the South of England. Her love of drawing became apparent early on in her childhood, winning an art prize at the age of 8. THE BRICK LANE GALLERY

Contemporary Painting 6th-16th June 2024 216 Brick Lane, Bethnal Green, London E1 6SA – open daily, Monday – Saturday 10am-6pm; Sunday 12 – 6pm.

Gabrielle is delighted to be showing a collection of new works, three of which are inspired by her recent trip to Nepal, India and Bhutan. It is certainly worth a visit to see her remarkable pieces at the Brick Lane Gallery for those interested in investing in sensibly priced stunningly attractive and thoughtful artworks. An uplifting experience is guaranteed.

On leaving home she has, until recently, enjoyed something of a peripatetic lifestyle. Traveling and moving house every couple of years or so has provided wonderful inspiration for her work. She now bases herself between the French Alps and Dorset. Her work is about the joy of nature, a place to escape to, away to from the worries of the world. Working from sketches taken from her travels and the life model, she seeks to create magical places with oil on canvas with more than a purely aesthetic appeal. Her paintings are set as if from a hidden place, looking in on a scene from a safe space, provided by the beauty of flowers and foliage. It is these that provide a constant in the circle of life. In the face of challenges such as Climate Change. When asked, she says: it is so important to remind ourselves how lucky we are to have such a wonderful planet.

She also likes to paint small, colourful still lifes as an adjunct to her main signature work.

THE BERKELEY’S ICONIC BLUE BAR

The legendary Blue Bar at The Berkeley, created by the late great designer David Collins, glows anew – with reimagined mixology and late-night vibes making it this season’s coolest hotspot.

When it first opened its doors in October 2000, the Blue Bar – with its standout hue specially created from 50 different shades of blue – became the first spot to make hotel bars a place to be seen and a ‘scene’ in their own right, mixing dazzling drinks with glamourous hospitality and a crowd full of fashionistas.

Music has always been a part of its DNA. It was an early haunt of entertainment royalty counting Madonna – a close friend of Collins – as a regular guest. Today the Blue Bar continues to be an epicentre of mixology and cocktail culture.

PRESENTING THE PAVILION

The Blue Bar’s glass pavilion is now dedicated to exclusive vinyl-only sets by DJs every Thursday to Saturday evening. The new state-of-the-art decks and vinyls sit against a statement floor-to-ceiling blue tassel backdrop, evoking a moody atmosphere designed for drinking, dancing, and late-night chatter.

COCKTAIL O’CLOCK

Vinyl sleeve menus nod to the Blue Bar’s musical legacy, with twelve new cocktails that blend rich history with forward-thinking flavours. As colourful and creative as the space in which they’re shaken, stirred and served, highlights include ‘I’m Blue’, a refreshing and slightly sweet discoinspired drink that captures the vibrant energy of the Blue Bar team and ‘Mirror Martini’, a fruity and dry gin-based cocktail, served in a mirror coated martini glass – an affectionate nod to the signature mirrors on the wall.

Perfect for warmer months, ‘Side by Side’ is a Sangria-style tequila-based drink which cleverly showcases peach in three ways - using a peach aperitif, a peach liqueur and finally garnished with a Japanese ‘Wakamomo’ peach.

LATE-NIGHT BITES WITH A TWIST

Longtime favourites including the brie, Wiltshire ham and truffle toasties are now joined by steak tartare crumpets, topped with confit egg yolk and pickled shallot, while classic churros are served laden with lashings of shaved Manchego cheese. Discover elevated small plates, from Dorset crab tacos and Angus beef sliders to a 5-star take on the humble hot dog.

CHEZ ROUX

MICHEL ROUX TO OPEN A NEW RESTAURANT AT THE LANGHAM, 22 MAY 2024

On 22 May 2024, Michel Roux will open Chez Roux, a new restaurant in Palm Court at The Langham, London.

The restaurant has been inspired by Michel’s childhood memories: life in rural Kent in the 1960s, being raised at the Fairlawne estate where his father Albert Roux OBE worked as a private chef for the Cazalet family, and the first menus from Le Gavroche in 1967.

Chez Roux will present a unique opportunity to experience Michel Roux’s cooking in London, with menus that showcase historical British classics and traditional French cooking methods, presented in contemporary, refined dishes.

To begin, guests will be able to sample Roux’s take on Welsh Rarebit, rich with stout and Montgomery cheddar and piquant with mustard, Worcestershire sauce and pickled walnut. Main courses will include Lamb Chops Reform, inspired by Alexis Soyer’s classic 1830s recipe, and here consisting of herb-crusted lamb, faggot and Reform sauce. There will also be Grilled lobster with garlic butter, fries and béarnaise, one of Chef Michel’s all-time favourite dishes, and something he remembers enjoying at Le Gavroche as a child.

The menu will be complemented by premium wines and Champagnes, as well as an exclusive collection of hand-crafted cocktails reflective of the era, including the Queen’s Dubonnet and the Madeira Cobbler. Open for dinner only, the restaurant will be located in The Langham’s elegant central dining room, Palm Court, where the ambience and service will complete the dining experience and bring Chez Roux to life. The Langham’s legendary afternoon tea will continue to be served in Palm Court during the day.

On the launch of Chez Roux, Michel Roux comments:

“I have such fond memories of growing up at Fairlawne, where my father spent seven years cooking for the Cazalet family. The menu at Chez Roux is inspired by these early memories. Many of the recipes that were popular during the 60s have been consigned to history, yet there is so much to love about the dishes I remember from this time – British classics combined with traditional French techniques. So, with a touch of nostalgia and much excitement, I can’t wait for guests to try the menus at Chez Roux at The Langham.”

FASHION EXHIBITION

USING PLANT WASTE FROM KING’S GARDEN TO GO ON DISPLAY

28 MAY 2024

Arange of unique outfits created with plant waste taken from the King’s gardens are set to go on display at Sandringham House.

The collection of 26 garments and accessories is part of an ongoing collaboration between designer duo Vin + Omi and Charles after they bonded over their shared passion for sustainability when they met in 2018.

The exhibition, titled Royal Garden Waste To Fashion’s Future, will be held from March 23 to October 11 in the Ballroom at Sandringham in Norfolk.

The collection includes Vin + Omi’s initial experiments using butterbur, an invasive Asian bog-loving plant that grows beside the lakes at Sandringham.

The plant was later used to create an elegant maxi dress, which is described as a world-first.

Other outfits have been created from plant materials from the royal gardens at Highgrove in Gloucestershire and the Queen Mother’s Scottish estate, the Castle of Mey in Caithness.

After their meeting in 2018, the King invited Vin + Omi to his Highgrove estate, giving them the opportunity to sift through waste from the garden and see what materials they might be able to make from it.

The following year, the designers created a process to turn the nettles they had gathered into a versatile textile.

The material was later made into dresses and outfits for their London fashion show Sting, which was held at the Savoy Hotel.

In the exhibition, the nettle material has been used a number of times, including for a coil dress which is laid on a base of recycled groundsheet and dyed with fallen rose petals.

The pair have also considered new ways of dyeing using waste plant dyes and have fashioned “hard to recycle” plant pots into jewellery in their work.

Other plant materials incorporated into their garments are cow parsley, willow, hydrangea and, from the Mey Estate, bog cotton.

The designers Vin + Omi said: “This ongoing collaboration works so well because the King has allowed us to be creatively experimental in approaching new innovative ways for working with his garden’s waste.”

The collaboration has also involved UK and international university students who have taken part in an educational programme supported by the head gardeners from Highgrove and Sandringham.

Sandringham House and Gardens will open to visitors for the main season until October 11.

ACADEMIC PROGRESS

CELEBRATED AS SIGNIFICANT STRENGTH

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery receives glowing ISI inspection

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, is delighted to announce the findings of its latest inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The inspection, which was carried out in November 2023, praised Rosemead’s academic approach to learning, pastoral care and support and the positive influence of the school’s values, vision, and leadership.

“A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,” the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.”

Speaking about the report, Head of Rosemead, Graeme McCafferty explained: “I am absolutely thrilled to share our

outstanding recent inspection report with our community. One standout strength that truly shines through is our highly customised approach to every child’s academic progress. The report highlighted our dedication to tailoring personal learning programs for each child, particularly in subjects like Maths, English, VR, and NVR.”

Graeme added: “What’s more, our extensive learning support programme ensures that every individual in our school community not only succeeds but thrives. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to providing the best possible education for every child at Rosemead, and I couldn’t be prouder of our school’s achievement.”

children,’ the report found. ‘The positive relationships between adults and children in the early years help children settle in quickly and feel safe and happy.’

It added: ‘Children in the early years achieve well from their varied starting points. Adults engage with the children effectively and use appropriate questioning to develop children’s vocabulary and understanding. Children from an early age become confident speakers and develop their reading skills well.

The report comes at an exciting time for Rosemead. Last year, the school announced a merger with St Dunstan’s College joining St Dunstan’s Community of Schools.

St Dunstan’s Group Head, Nick Hewlett, said: “The whole community is delighted with the ISI inspection for Rosemead. The report rightly recognises the outstanding education Rosemead is offering as one of south London’s leading prep schools. Bringing our schools together has been a wonderful opportunity, allowing our staff and students to work closer together, learning from one another and enhancing our students’ educational journeys. I pay tribute to the staff, children and parents who are part of this onward journey, and I am very excited by Rosemead’s future.”

Noting the recent merger, the report highlighted: ‘Governors and senior leaders work well together to promote the effectiveness of the school. Governors’ vision has a positive influence on every area of the school and drives continual improvement, for example, the recent decision to merge with another school.’

Alongside the academic excellence, the report praised the ‘positive’ Roots of Rosemead, which are the school’s values

system. ‘The curriculum and communication of school values, known as the ‘Roots of Rosemead’ encourage respect and strengthen pupils’ appreciation of the diversity of the school and wider community. ‘The consistent promotion of these values helps develop pupils’ moral understanding.’

The full inspection report can be found on Rosemead’s website, and the school will be hosting their next open morning on Tuesday 18 June 2024, 9.30am - 11.00am. Book at rosemeadprep.org.uk

EXCLUSIVE NEW MEMBERS’ LOUNGE UNVEILED BY THE LENSBURY RESORT

The Lensbury Resort unveils its exclusive new members’ lounge

With a rich history deeply rooted in health, wellness and wellbeing, The Lensbury is delighted to launch an exclusive new lounge for its club members. The aim is to provide an environment that puts members at the centre of The Lensbury experience, with a private lounge and high-quality café that offers a retreat from the fast pace of daily life where they can relax and connect with peers.

“The Lensbury is committed to constantly evolving the facilities and services to stay in step with contemporary lifestyles”

“Everyone needs time to recharge and reset, but it’s often difficult to do so. Our vision for the new lounge was to create a dedicated space, which will help our members to embody The Lensbury’s focus on health and wellbeing” says Claire Llewellin-Davis, Managing Director of The Lensbury. “Providing an exclusive area for relaxation and socialising gives members an opportunity to decompress and also build connections and relationships that will enhance their membership experience.”

Change that’s rooted in history

The Lensbury has been an iconic riverside resort for over 100 years. It was established in 1920 as an international training centre. In the 1990s, the resort was then opened for membership to local residents and other individuals and businesses, given its range of events and hotel facilities. This gave rise to The Lensbury as we know it today, where members already enjoy an extensive range of benefits, including Hi-Energy classes, Pilates sessions, watersports on the river, indoor pools, racquets courts, a first-class gym, and a wide range of familyorientated activities.

While committed to its origins as a family-oriented club, with excellent sports facilities, The Lensbury is committed to constantly evolving the facilities and services to stay in step with contemporary lifestyles. The new members’ lounge is one illustration of this.

As well as having an exclusive area to unwind and relax, members will also be able to enjoy a contemporary range of protein-packed

salads, sandwiches and snacks, alongside postgym shakes, smoothies and excellent coffee from independent baristas Mozzo, using state-of-theart machines.

Curating comfort through design

Design Director, Frances Blackham from Trevillion, says, “The design takes inspiration from the stunning location, gardens and grounds and the rich heritage that surrounds The Lensbury. Our intention was to create a social space at the heart of the Clubhouse, with a reassuring and relaxing feel by using natural, tactile materials and a fresh colour palette.”

“The new membership lounge will serve as a haven from the fast pace of daily life—a retreat where members can relax and connect with peers”

With an open and naturally lit style, the new lounge is the perfect spot for socialising with friends and family, reading the daily paper, or winding down after a strenuous workout. With café-style seating as well as comfortable sofas for those looking to simply unwind, we hope members will increasingly see it as a ‘home away from home’.

Further enhancements planned

So, what’s next in store for potential members? The lounge will be opening on May 15, 2024, and is only the latest development in a series of planned enhancements to the club. Members can also look forward to a new members’ terrace and reception in due course. Contact The Lensbury’s team to learn more about the lounge or to discuss membership. Lensbury.com; 020 8614 6465

• The Freedom from Torture Garden: A Sanctuary for Survivors - designed by John Warland & Emma O’Connell, built by Living Landscapes. A place of sanctuary, peace and hope where horticultural therapy calms, heals and restores survivors of torture on their journey to recovery. The communal bread oven brings survivors together to share stories and build new friendships.

Dorset Opera Festival July World Première

Join the partying at this year’s Dorset Opera Festival as the company celebrates its Golden Jubilee! The celebrations began last November when the Festival was nominated as a finalist in the prestigious International Opera Awards.

Dorset Opera’s very first performance (Smetana’s Bartered Bride at Sherborne School in 1974), was graced by the presence of none other than opera aficionado His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales (now, His Majesty, King Charles III).

50 years on – and firmly based at Bryanston, Blandford Forum –the Festival brings two major works and an Opera Gala to what is confidently billed as ‘The Social Highlight of Dorset’s Summer’!

With a chorus of 60 and a full orchestra, this year’s opera choices are: Puccini’s most famous opera, Madama Butterfly (commemorating 100 years since the composer’s death). This tells the heartrending account of a young geisha from Nagasaki, who marries an American naval officer, for love. He, on the other hand, marries for convenience – intending to take an American bride on his return to the States. Watch and listen in horror as their worlds descend into chaos. Madama Butterfly contains the famous aria Un bel di… (One Fine Day) and the well-known Humming Chorus…

This yeae’s world première is a new commission from supremely talented composer, Paul Carr. His music can be heard regularly on Classic FM. The composition celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dorset Opera is Under the Greenwood Tree – Thomas Hardy’s second novel, set to a libretto by Euan Tait.

If you purchase tickets for both operas at the same time, you will receive a discount of 10% on the lower value tickets.

Tickets | Picnics | Opera Dinners: dorsetopera.com or 07570 366186 | 22-27th July.

BLACK TIE, BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT.

Uniquely yours with limitless possibilities.

1. Mastering the Fit

There are dozens fit aspects that are crucial visually, and enhance your comfort. Take some of the basic ones as an example

• Jacket Length: The right length of your jacket is pivotal. It shapes your silhouette, balancing the proportions between your torso and legs. A jacket that is slightly too long can make your legs appear shorter, whereas one that is too short may make you look bulkier.

“When you put all the small details together to create a garment that is uniquely yours, it has a life & flair about it that no off the peg garment ever will”

combinations:

• Style Variations: Decide between a sophisticated three-piece or a sleek two-piece tuxedo.

• Chest and Torso circumference - a common fit issue. The jacket should button easily but fit snugly. There should be no pulling across the chest or gaping when buttoned. This ensures a smooth, clean look that contours the body effectively.

At Artefact London bespoke tailoring we can talk about the cut endlessly. If you are considering buying off-the-rack, always factor in the cost of alterations. Although they can certainly help improve the cut, they are limited to adjusting what is already there.

2. Design Intricacies

We seem to have endless options with ready to wear, but do we? Ready to wear offers what sells easily and fits the majority. Consider all the possible design

Consider a double-breasted style for a touch of classic charm or a single-breasted one for a streamlined look.

• Colour and Fabric (cloth? Fabric sounds more American to my ears): While traditional black is an eternal(timeless) classic, midnight blue can offer a unique twist that stands out subtly.

• Lapel Style: Choose from peak lapels for a sharp, assertive look or shawl lapels for a smooth, timeless appeal.

• Bright Touches: Perhaps introduce a dash of colour with a jacquard dinner jacket to inject personality into your ensemble. A royal blue dinner jacket is a classic or go all out and emulate 007‘s

56 MAY 2024 WEDDINGS

(Daniel Craig’s) fuchsia double-breasted dinner jacket.

• Cloth weight: Select from mohair or pure wool for a refined finish, rather than polyester mixed. Choose a lighter weight or heavier cloth for a crisper finish.

Tatyana, says: “When you put all the small details together to create a garment that is uniquely yours, it has a life & flair about it that no off the peg garment ever will.”

3. Impeccable Craftsmanship

These days many luxury ready-to-wear brands focus their attention & budget on marketing. Few retain their focus on craftsmanship as it takes away from the economies of scale. This paves the way for boutique bespoke tailors to fill the gap. What you rarely find in ready-to-wear are some of the aspects that are a given with bespoke craft:

• Quality of Material: Pure silk lapels over polyester lapels always speaks volumes of the garment quality. Pure wool, rather than a commercial name lana wool

• Attention to Detail: Working buttonholes on the cuffs and the use of breathable, pure fabrics enhance both your comfort and the overall look of the garment.

• Canvassed rather than fused jackets. Canvas gives the jacket shape and structure. The garment moulds around the torso over time.

At Artefact London, all of the above are non-negotiable elements that make the garment perfect. Furthermore, choose the lining to reflect your personality, be it a muted colour or a bright paisley. Add your initials to mark the ownership of your creation. They say the devil is in the detail and standing out in black tie certainly requires attention to the smallest of them. Choosing bespoke tailoring eases the process.

If you need a tux quickly and are working with a limited budget, an off-the-rack offering may be the way to go. However, if you are looking for a garment to impress for a special occasion, want something that fits perfectly, and is uniquely yours, investing in bespoke tailoring is well worth the cost and time. Each choice has its merits, and the right one depends on your specific needs, circumstances and your priorities.

Want help with no detail to be missed for an important event? Get in touch with Tatyana at Artefact London.

Crescent Moon offer a wonderful array of chandeliers and lanterns for hire for weddings, parties and special events. We also regularly hire to the TV and film industry. We are proud to offer the largest collection of chandeliers for hire in the UK and provide a full delivery and installation service. From epic 3.5 meter Empire chandeliers, magnificent 3 meter ornate Marie Therese chandeliers to stunning Vintage French Crystal Empires. We have large matching sets and this is what makes our business unique and ideal for events and films.

Over recent years, we have built up a large collection of chandelier stands and chandelier arches, to enable us to hang our chandeliers in all situations, no matter how challenging. From outdoor events to listed buildings, our chandelier arches have been indispensable on countless occasions.

Many of our clients dream of incorporating a chandelier as the central focus of their wedding design. However, this often creates a difficult task when it comes to planning the placement of the chandelier. The use of a floor standing chandelier enables us to envisage wonderous designs. Recently we have created beautiful walkways for weddings both indoors and outside as well as using them over long tables.

Free standing chandeliers can give the appearance of the chandelier literally floating if the stand is concealed well using foliage or with a floral display. For a cutting edge look, leave the chandelier arch exposed to enjoy the elegant arching lines of the caste metal stand. This creates an architectural, almost industrial feel to the look of the chandelier creating a modern statement.

We have helped create some stunning interiors at The Albert Hall, The Burlington Arcade, The Excel Centre, and at Old Billingsgate. In the last few years we have supplied giant chandeliers to film production companies at Shepperton Studios and Warner Brothers Studios for the films, ‘Tom and Jerry’, ‘Cruella’ and Mission Impossible. We have also supplied chandeliers for television; for the shows ‘The Greatest Dancer’ on BBC1, ‘XFactor’, ‘Britains Got Talent’ and ‘The Voice’. crescent-moon.co.uk

Romantic Florals

JOSEPHINE STEVENS SPEAKS TO ALANA WATTS, OWNER AND FLORAL DESIGNER OF PETAL AND WILD. THE COMPANY SPECIALISES IN WILD, PRETTY AND ROMANTIC WEDDING FLORAL DESIGN COVERING, LONDON, ESSEX AND SURROUNDING AREAS

Tell me a bit about yourself and your company.

I’ve always been creative and loved the outdoors. As a child I’d spend hours outside in the garden helping my parents prune the roses and plant tulip bulbs. I trained at Italia Conti Academy of theatrical arts and performed in West End shows as a singer/dancer for a number of years. I was frequently sent the most beautiful bouquets during the run from a florist stand outside the theatre on Seven Dials. Once I left the theatre world I struggled to find something that gave me the same passion. By chance a leaflet was popped through my door advertising a floristry course at my local university which caught my attention. I enrolled and am delighted to say it reignited my creative fire and reminded me how much I love working with natural materials. It was totally fate looking out for me and I’ve never looked back.

I created Petal and Wild flowers to appeal to the bride who wants something completely unique and elegant on their wedding day. My style is romantic and natural, like flowers just picked from a country garden. I enjoy working with a loose brief so I can really be creative and design something stunning and enchanting for the big day.

Where do you get inspiration from?

of the English countryside.

TOP TIPS FOR BRIDES

Let your florist know your budget from the very start. It’s much easier to advise on designs and flowers to achieve the look you are after if we have this information. If you love expensive flowers such as peonies, ask your florist to use them in your bouquet and find a more economical substitute for the table flowers if your budget will not stretch.

Ask your florist to choose flowers that are in season, it doesn’t mean they are necessarily cheaper but means they are better quality and at their best. It will also help to encompass the time year you have chosen to get married in.

Choose a few larger arrangements, rather than lots of smaller vases or jars if you really want to make an impact on your wedding day. Pedestal arrangements and pew ends can be re-used from the ceremony and repositioned in the reception area afterwards to help make the most of your flowers.

With power, light, heat, wifi and an integral PA system, its renovated vaulted roof and wooden floor makes it an absolute dream of a place; it will tick all your ‘vibe’ and ‘vision’ boxes. Adding your own decoration, will only enhance what you already have. Imagine having your ceremony in here – and many have exchanged their legal or personal vows; or cutting your cake, dancing the night away, or connecting with friends round the bar. With it being a licensed venue, you can also choose a number of stunning outside areas around the venue; there’s even an old Victorian open-sided cattle shed for your nearest and dearest and the registrars to get out of the rain.

will gather and mingle for welcome drinks and canapes, or just sit on the benches and outside furniture, often well into the night.

Although not immediately obvious you will be amazed by the simplicity and splendour of our summer marquee. From April through to the end of September, it is genuinely a blank canvas for your plans. It complements the barn by providing another gorgeous space, used for your wedding breakfast, and later for a chill out and relaxed area, but you won’t feel separated from the party. If it’s too hot we roll up the front; in cooler evenings we pipe in hot air to keep it nice and snug. You can even use our round tables and chairs, but the rest is free for your creative juices to create your memorable occasion.

There’s parking, underlaid with a mesh base to reduce the risk of getting stuck. There’s a modern fully accessible loo and shower block. Well-manicured lawns lead out to our paddocks, farmland, woods and wildflower meadows, and with access to our private gardens for your photographs you may never want to leave! And our treelined paddocks can be put to good use, for a ceremony and/ or for camping. You can hire in Bell Tents from local suppliers, and guests just love the festival feel of having their very own escape at the venue. We always share our list of suppliers, all eager for the call-up. Suppliers simply love to return, as they appreciate the attention to detail, flexibility and thought that has gone into making them such an integral and important part of your day.

To get inside the barn you cross an immaculate Portuguese limestone stepped courtyard; a real south facing suntrap. Here guests

Key to this gorgeous Suffolk venue is it’s not overdone, not pompous, not regimented – you have almost complete freedom to make your day memorable and special for you and your guests. You are not just another customer on a treadmill of our weddings; it might be our place, but for your Big Day it’s your space. thesancroftbarns.co.uk

Nestled amidst quintessential English countryside on the Essex-Suffolk border, Hedingham Castle stands as an iconic testament to British history, with a heritage spanning almost 900 years. The 160-acre estate is privately owned and has remained in the same family since it was built in the 12th century by the Earls of Oxford. Comprising a Norman Castle, the best preserved of its kind in the country; a grand 18th century Georgian House with adjoining Ballroom Marquee; two charming accommodation cottages and magnificent grounds, Hedingham Castle is a stunning and unique venue for your wedding celebrations.

A Necker Island Wedding… LUXURY

PERSONIFIED

Necker Island is one of the world’s most romantic spots for newlywed couples wanting the ultimate luxury for their honeymoon – picture yourselves together holding hands with your toes in the sand on the most luxurious island in the Caribbean! Sir Richard Branson’s private island may be his home and favourite hideaway, but he doesn’t mind sharing a slice of his paradise. He arrived on his island for his wedding clinging to the struts of a helicopter... now that’s making an entrance!

Necker Island is one of the world’s most secluded spots for those wanting the ultimate luxury, in privacy.

Perched at the island’s highest point, The Great House is where people come together, to dine, party or just relax. The house has a wraparound terrace with hammocks and sofas, and this being Necker Island, naturally you can expect a fully stocked bar. Up on the roof you’ll find a cosy hot tub – perfect for sipping champagne as you watch the sun set. Necker Island’s 74-acre estate has all the ingredients for a honeymoon of a lifetime. Guests can look forward to up to nine hours of sunshine a day with temperatures reaching up to 31°C between July and October.

Right on the island’s main beach, the Beach House sits in between the island’s two tennis courts and the Caribbean Sea. With an impressive bar,

space for games tables and an enormous 26-foot sofa, the Beach House is the place for relaxed lunches and enjoying the sea breezes in between dips into the crystal clear waters. The Beach Pool has a freeform infinity pool complete with a swim-up bar where guests can enjoy a drink. There’s also a huge hot tub right on the beach with space for more than 30 people.

Turtle Beach is the perfect spot for relaxing….in a hammock of course, and for the more energetic there is always the sunken trampoline! You can take to the waters from the new Watersports Pavilion and have a go at anything from kitesurfing to paddle boarding, water skiing to kayaking and snorkelling.

For a wedding or special occasion, Necker Island can host weddings for as many as 200 people. Exclusive use of Necker Island includes eleven bedrooms in The Great House and 13 individual Bali rooms and suites dotted around the island, easily accommodating up to 48 guests. There is also a bunkroom in The Great House that sleeps up to six children. For the newlyweds we recommend the Master Suite on the upper level of the Great House, complete with a private outdoor hot tub and outdoor bath. Additional accommodation is available on newly launched, sister island, Moskito Island.

After deciding to arrive by helicopter - the newest touch of extravagance on offer - there are many options to choose from for your reception. They can organise a six-course gala dinner or a

ROYAL ASCOT ‘LOOKBOOK’

ROYAL ASCOT UNVEILS ITS FIRST ‘LOOKBOOK’ UNDER NEW CREATIVE DIRECTOR DANIEL FLETCHER. THE FASHION DESIGNER MADE HISTORY AS ROYAL ASCOT’S FIRST EVER CREATIVE DIRECTOR IN ITS 300+ YEAR HISTORY. BY RIKKI LOFTUS,

Royal Ascot has unveiled its first Lookbook under fashion designer Daniel Fletcher – the British racing institution’s first ever creative director in more than 300 years.

While still highlighting tailoring, British designer Fletcher – who first rose to fame after dressing Harry Styles – has applied his signature, bold aesthetic to the annual Lookbook. It’s set to help racegoers be inventive in how they source their outfits, to create an inspired look that’s authentic to their personal style.

Ascot is an important fixture in the fashion stakes – with notable attendees of the prestigious event including King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Fletcher has produced five consolidated edits that showcase a range of looks appropriate across all enclosure dress codes.

These include a ‘New Guard’ category, which showcases clothing from independent designers and rising stars in the UK, and ‘The

Conscious Edit’, which takes a more sustainable approach and includes pieces from Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood.

In 2022, Royal Ascot relaxed their famously strict dress code for the first time due to soaring temperatures, with racegoers being allowed to remove their jackets and ties.

Now, Fletcher is adding an exciting new edge to the event’s style focus.

“This season, I wanted to bring a fresh take on fashion at the races and the magical world of occasion dressing,” said London-based Fletcher, 33.

“Inspiration came from my lifelong fascination with British heritage, and the stylish characters one might find at the racecourse this summer and beyond, whilst also paying homage to the array of

88 MAY 2024 FASHION & BEAUTY

styles able to be showcased across each enclosure, as well as my favourite Royal Ascot looks throughout the decades that I discovered during my research delving through the pictorial archives.

“This includes my signature style of building an outfit based on neutrals and my love of tailoring, which I’ve then juxtaposed with more playful maximalist looks that highlight a sense of British sartorial elegance and the glamour of Royal Ascot.

“Be it flamboyant or understated, Royal Ascot gives us the chance to embrace the famous dress codes and dress up, encouraging freedom of expression through dressing. For 2024, I want to capture that joy and inspire racegoers to push the boundaries with their own unique style, and to embrace their own creativity.”

Originally from the North West of England, Fletcher launched his eponymous menswear label, DANIEL w. FLETCHER in 2015, after graduating from Central Saint Martins and gaining experience with fashion giants including Louis Vuitton, Lanvin and JW Anderson. He soon started getting noticed, especially after Harry Styles began wearing his clothes.

In 2020, he took part in Netflix’s Next In Fashion series, which saw him make it to the final.

Now leading the style helm for Royal Ascot, Alexandra Bertram, brand and creative lead for Ascot Racecourse, said of Fletcher’s first Lookbook edits: “From quintessentially ‘Royal Ascot’ looks that embody our sartorial heritage, through to the playful elegance of vintage dressing and relaxed formalwear, there’s a look that speaks to every style generation across every enclosure.”

“Fletcher has produced five consolidated edits that showcase a range of looks appropriate across all enclosure dress codes”

MAKE-UP MAKEOVER

Watch out for these hygiene risks, experts warn. By Katie Wright.

ATikTok video showing a beauty influencer cutting open a brand new make-up sponge to reveal spots of mould has gone viral, racking up more than 18m views.

Beauty influencer Kaitlyn Son, aka mycorneroftheuniverse, sliced the bright-pink teardrop-shaped blender into three pieces and found there was black mould speckled throughout.

Viewers were horrified that even an unused sponge could be so

HOME & GARDEN
FASHION & BEAUTY 92 MAY 2024

dirty, with many commenting under the video saying they’ve had their blenders for years and wondering if it’s time to get a new one.

Unfortunately, a mouldy beauty sponge isn’t the only health risk that could be hiding in your make-up bag.

We asked medical experts to explain everything you need to know about keeping your cosmetics – and your face –clean…

Eye make-up

“Eye make-up is probably the most important part of your make-up bag to maintain good hygiene, due to the delicate tissues around the eyes making it easier for pathogens to cause infections and acting as a direct entry point,” says Dr Hana Patel, GP and women’s health specialist at Superdrug Online Doctor.

Liquid products such as mascara and eyeliner tend to be more of a problem than things like eyeshadow.

“Mascara and eyeliner tubes create a dark and moist environment, which is conducive to the growth of bacteria and harmful microorganisms,” Patel says.

“To minimise these risks, it is recommended to replace these products every three to six months, and avoid pumping the wand, as this introduces air and can lead to contamination.”

And never share eye make-up products: “There is a much higher chance of transmitting infections from one person to another. If you notice any signs of irritation, redness, or itching, discontinue use immediately.”

Base products

“Not practising good hygiene with foundation, powders, bronzers and blushes can result in skin irritation and acne through transferred bacteria entering and clogging your pores,” says Patel.

In addition, make-up brushes or blenders used to apply base products can be a magnet for bacteria.

“Brushes collect all sorts of undesirable debris, including your make-up product, dirt and oil,” says Dr Miriam Adebibe, aesthetic doctor and founder of Dr Miriam A Skin Clinic.

“This is a great breeding ground for bacteria and viruses, which can cause acne breakouts, skin irritation, and introduce infection where the skin barrier has broken down for any reason.”

Dr Simon Theobalds, GP at Pall Mall Medical recommends washing your make-up brushes at least once a week: “You can use a gentle, antibacterial soap or a specialised brush cleanser for this purpose. It’s vital to ensure that your brushes and beauty blenders dry completely between uses, as damp tools create a breeding ground for bacteria.”

After allowing your tools to air-dry thoroughly, store them in a clean and dry environment, he continues: “Avoid leaving them in humid areas, as moisture encourages bacterial growth. Consider using breathable containers or brush holders.”

Whether you use a blender, a brush or your fingers to apply products, Theobalds says: “Always wash your hands before applying makeup to prevent transferring dirt and bacteria onto your face and make-up tools.”

Lipstick and gloss

Swiping lipstick or balm directly from the bullet onto your lips may be the most convenient application method, but it’s not the most hygienic.

“It’s best to use clean lip brushes or disposable applicators instead of applying directly from the product packaging – this prevents the transfer of bacteria from your lips back into the product,” Theobalds says.

Adebibe agrees: “Applying lip balm with your finger can transfer dirt and bacteria into your balm and onto your lips. Make sure to wash your hands before applying to avoid this.”

Never share lip products, Theobalds warns: “Especially with individuals with compromised immune systems, as this increases the risk of spreading infections,” such as herpes simplex, which can cause cold sores.

“It’s also important to discard any lip products that have changed in texture, smell, or colour.”

Don’t forget to include lip brushes when doing your weekly wash, he adds: “Use a mild, antibacterial soap or brush cleanser. Make sure your brushes are thoroughly dry before using them to prevent the growth of bacteria.”

Make-up bag

“Make-up bags will naturally accumulate bacteria over time, especially if make-up products spill or if brushes and applicators are not cleaned regularly,” Patel says.

“Bacterial growth in the bag increases the risk of skin infections and irritations when using the stored products.”

Nasties can transfer from one product to another, and if you store your make-up bag in the humid environment of a bathroom it can promote bacterial growth.

“To address this concern, it is advisable to frequently clean both the inside and outside of your make-up bag using a mild disinfectant or wipes,” Patel says.

“Use separate compartments within the bag for different types of products to prevent cross-contamination. Opt for make-up bags made of washable materials that can be easily cleaned or wiped down.”

SPRING BAGS

FROM LADYLIKE LUXE TO HOBO TOTES, THESE ARE THE UP-TO-THE MINUTE STYLES, SAYS SAM WYLIE-HARRIS.

Wto designer collections, you can’t go wrong with the longevity of a structured shoulder bag in a neutral hue, peach or putty pink. “Spring acts as a soothing and elevated palette cleanser before the new summer season arrives,” says Zizi Hill, Radley design director. And as she points out: “Intricate leather, plush suedes, and faux snake and croc add dimension and luxe.”

Elegant top handles

hen it comes to your hardest-working accessory, you can never have too many handbags. The easiest way to lift your capsule wardrobe, occasion wear, and fun, easy favourites is with something new to hold.

Best of all, if you can’t make up your mind as to which key trend to tap into, ‘bag layering’ is right up there.

“Whether you need the extra storage space or want to make a statement, the double bag trend is set to be in this spring,” says Nia Davis, designer at handbag and accessory brand, Fiorelli.

To master the trend, she says to opt for a medium-sized, minimalist base such as a black tote [or designer logo if that’s your thing].

“And pair it with a mini or crossbody bag for an added layer of texture, colour, or shape.”

HERE’S HOW TO TAKE YOUR CUE FROM WHAT’S NEW…

Ladylike shoulder

With understated quiet luxury still in the limelight, and pastel shades key

Sure to be a hit this spring, Davis says top-handle bags have a simple yet timeless silhouette. “Perfect for understated and chic styling, they can be worn multiple ways, depending on the occasion. “This season, the details are up to you, leaving room for personal expression. Whether that’s through playful colourways or refined detailing, such as unique handles, the classic style is set to feel fun again.”

Half moon

The crescent shape is here to stay, as we look forward to wearing them – or holding them – with lighter layers and sheer fabrics in the months ahead.

Indeed, Thomasine Jordan, global design & product director, LK Bennett, says their chest bag has become one of their bestselling styles as the cross-body bag trend continues: “And we love the new dusky pink colour way this season.”

Meanwhile, Ria Campbell, head of PR, Monsoon, says the demand for halfmoon bags has soared – and they’ve embraced the trend with a new clasp-shut cross-body bag in radiant red. “A chic investment in a timeless accessory that promises to endure the ever-changing waves of fashion.”

Slouchy hobo

“Hobo bags are going to be one of the trendiest silhouettes to carry around this season, as the oversized tote bag has moved into a new, slouchy direction,” says Davis. “Designed to be filled up and slung over your shoulder, these effortless bags can fit your whole life inside them, making them a practical choice for everyday use.” And for maximum impact, the bigger the better.

Woven

Building on the basket bag trend, woven and raffia styles have had an update with trimmings and ruffles… “Usually associated with beachy escapes, woven style bags are set to be more popular than ever this season,” says Davis. “There are so many different variations of woven bags, from structured basket bags, rope-like designs and woven handle detailing – as straw, leather, rope and raffia designs lend themselves to this trend,” she highlights.

THE ART OF DOWNSIZING

We all appreciate that quality surpasses quantity in life, which is why downsizing should be seen as an exciting opportunity to fine-tune your environment rather than a mere reduction of space. Smaller spaces are often a highly practical solution, but also a reflection of the choice to embrace a lifestyle defined by intention, purpose and refinement. Only that which is important remains. Which calls for clever curation.

For those seeking to simplify their homes –and lives – without sacrificing beauty or comfort, it’s about balance. Should it stay or should it go? To downsize with style, each element of the space needs to be carefully edited to tick the boxes of functionality, aesthetics, and selfexpression.

To reduce one’s home with panache entails careful planning, thoughtful curation, and a

keen eye for design (plus an open mind). Join us on the voyage as we explore how to navigate the transition to a scaled-down home with grace, sophistication and – yes, really – joy.

EDIT, EDIT, EDIT:

Approach downsizing as a careful process of conscious curation, as opposed to a quick or thoughtless discarding of possessions. Each item to be carried forward should be useful or sentimental (a bonus point for both). It helps to visualise your stylish, functional home and view existing pieces alongside this new space. The rarely used? The long forgotten? The I-never-liked-this? Let them all go, and free yourself as well as your floor space. Stay mindful and remember the end goal –peace, practicality, beauty and refinement.

EXCELLENCE OVER EXCESS:

Repeat: quality not quantity, quality not quantity,

quality not quantity. Let this be your modern downsizing mantra, a starting point and a guide when you reach a fork in the road. Exquisitely designed pieces of furniture are what it’s all about here. Pieces that are timeless, forever-lasting, and well-crafted. Pieces with soul. Multifunctional furniture such as extendable dining tables, modular sofas and nesting tables offer versatility and efficiency, allowing the space to seamlessly adapt to various requirements as and when needs arise, without compromising on daily good looks.

START WITH THE STORAGE:

Well-designed storage is the foundation of any home, none more so than the downsized. As spaces compact, the war against clutter can be never ending, which is why built-in solutions, shelving units and other such organisers are vital. There will be some belongings you want to conceal, and some you want proudly on display, and this is where perfectly planned storage steps in.

MINIMALIST MOMENTS:

Throughout the process you’ll probably find that you start naturally swaying towards minimalism. That doesn’t mean moving into an all-white, empty cube, but more the dawning understanding that less really is more. Simple forms, clean lines, uncrowded spaces and a cohesive colour palette will nudge you to creating an environment that’s as serene as it is harmonious.

Those personal touches:

only showcases your personality and life story, but the memories they evoke every time you stroll past can be a thing of pure joy. Smaller-item collections should be considered and curated rather than totally de-cluttered, they very much deserve to be on display, bringing their delightful charm and character to the forefront of your new home.

chaplins.co.uk

Amidst all of the editing and paring back, it’s essential to remember the significance of meaningful touches. Downsizing in no way means the sacrifice of individualism or authenticity. Infusing cherished pieces into your new space not

MAKE YOUR HOME REALLY WELCOME YOU - WITH AUTOMATION

We all like to visit a welcoming home. One with friendly people, that is clean, safe, well-lit, warm, and where everything has been done to make us feel comfortable.

In the past, having our own homes ready to welcome us hasn’t been possible. Basic systems enabled to have heating come on at set times. Lights could be left on – but they look odd and waste electricity in the daytime. Turning an oven on to cook a meal was another option, but if your timing got away from you, you would return to a cooked, cooled, and drying feast.

Times have changed! Now there are apps on mobile phones that can automatically or at a command turn on or off lighting, heating, cooker, music, and even hot tubs! Such precise, remote, programmable controls have further benefits. Less power is wasted when homes aren’t in use, the appearance of occupancy can be created to deter theft, and if you have guests coming, preparations can be made when you are not at home.

David and Amanda Taylor are the husband-and-wife team at the heart of Focus AV, a custom install company with many years of experience in installing home automation systems and audio-visual services.

Amanda says, “We have been providing home automation services for years, installing systems that are right for our clients and their lifestyles. We had a lovely testimonial from Mr & Mrs C from Canford Cliffs which nicely sums up the way we work. They said, “A great part of David’s service is the way he works with us to set up the operating of the property exactly as we would like.”

Automation is becoming ever more intuitive. David says, “We supply controllers that sit alongside other brands and seamlessly bring them into one simple, easy-to-use interface. This offers our clients ease of use, rather than having to juggle lots of remotes, apps, or other controllers. We can easily remotely diagnose any issues and offer support a lot of the time without the need to make home visits, saving our clients time and money.”

THE WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE SUPERYACHT DUVET

Superyacht owners are willing to spend tens of thousands of pounds on a duvet to ensure the best night’s sleep. CC Design is producing what it believes to be the world’s most luxurious tailored duvet for clients in the superyacht industry costing €59,000 ($62,535).

Christophe Cotte, an artisan and master craftsman at CC Design, says the price tag is due to its luxurious eiderdown filling, the soft under feather of the eider duck. More expensive per gram than white truffles, Crème De La Mer, Saffron, and the World’s most expensive To’ak chocolate, eiderdown feathers cost a staggering €15 (c. $15.90) per gram.

Eiderdown are the most insulating feathers found anywhere on earth, enabling the ducks to thrive in some of the planet’s coldest climates. Female eider ducks pluck their feathers and line their nest to keep their eggs and young warm. On average an eider duck produces just two grams of down per year, making it scarcer than gold, platinum, and diamonds combined. Each duvet contains 380g of eiderdown

“Eiderdown are the most insulating feathers found anywhere on earth”

per square metre to provide exceptional warmth and comfort.

Christophe, who mastered his craft in one of France’s best upholstery schools, said: “At CC Design, we have supplied the ultimate luxury bedding to superyacht owners around the globe for almost 20 years, and our clients expect nothing short of the best.”

“Superyachts like the 162-metre (531foot) M/Y Eclipse cost around €1.591 billion (c. $1.5 billion). The billionaire owners of yachts like this think nothing of spending €37,698 (c.$40,000) on a bottle of whisky or €376,980 (c.$400,000) on diesel, so buying a duvet of this quality represents great value.”

CC Design is based in Antibes, France, and has received the Entreprise Patrimoine Vivant label, recognising its excellence in industrial and craft skills.

It also produces opulent 200g duvets starting at €14,650 (c. $15,547) and what Christophe believes to be the world’s most expensive superyacht mattress, The Auguste at €159,000 (c.$175,000).

Trend-led vs timeless

With a Ripples bathroom design specialist

Be bold with a trend-led look or keep things classic with a timeless scheme? Senior Designer from Ripples London, Jo Sansgster, gives her thoughts on whether trend-led or timeless designs are best when it comes to bathrooms.

Trend led

Historically, bathrooms were driven by functionality rather than style and luxury, however, today’s bathrooms are all about merging all these elements to create a fun, stimulating and personalised environment in which to spend time. A bathroom should reflect your unique individuality and flair by including a range of materials, colours and textures and shouldn’t be restricted by the status quo of a ‘timeless’ design.

As a designer, developing a scheme based on trending concepts can be incredibly exciting for Jo, allowing her to explore her client’s personality and incorporate it into a one-of-a-kind space. Her favourite way to embrace trends within a bathroom design is through tiling, with a feature tile being a fantastic way to introduce a popular colour, texture, or pattern. By interestingly configuring tiles, you can create a look which is unique to you, even if you’re using

the must-have tile of the moment. You can also incorporate trends through painted furniture or even a painted bath, allowing you to embrace the most sought-after colour.

Timeless

Some people might consider a timeless style to be a safe option, however, it doesn’t have to be bland. Marble, for example, is an ageless material but it can also be bright and bold and can add interest and colour to a space. Equally, a rolltop bath in copper or tin is a classic choice but can also create a big style statement within your room, making the space anything but dull.

With a timeless design, it is all about focusing on high-quality products that are known for their longevity rather than popular fads which can quickly date. Investing in quality sanitaryware and classically shaped brassware will ensure your bathroom will not only stand the test of time but will always remain in style. Brassware finishes such as chrome and brushed nickel might not be the newest on the market, but the beauty lies in how understated they are and the elegance they can bring to the room.
