Luxury department store Harrods incorporates ‘Mens Superbrands’ - a fabulous 41,000 sq ft menswear destination housing 19 of the world’s foremost fashion brands – Balmain Paris, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Brioni, Valentino, Fendi, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Prada, Stefano Ricci, Billionaire, Saint Laurent Paris, Berluti, Dolce & Gabbana, Loro Piana, Burberry, Tom Ford, Ermenegildo Zegna and Balenciaga. Berluti’s boutique features a bar, a football table and virtual reality screens, whilst Louis Vuitton have designed a personal shopping suite that can be privatised for any customer looking for the ultimate shopping experience, or opened to provide additional seating areas for clients.
The Menswear department on the ground floor, which has been present for more than 80 years, has relocated to the second floor, marking the biggest change in Menswear at Harrods. There was a complete redevelopment of Menswear and Sports at Harrods – the largest investment in Harrods’ menswear history. Upon completion this year, the entire second floor of Harrods will be the new home for Menswear and Sports. At 155,000sq ft, it will be the ultimate menswear destination in the world. Michael Ward, Managing Director at Harrods, said: “Menswear has experienced a quiet revolution over the past few years in terms of innovation and customer demand. Menswear within Harrods has gone from strength to strength, and we want to match this growth with the investment in a truly unique destination. The launch of Mens Superbrands is the first step in this exciting journey, which will create a new home for the Harrods Man in 2020. Mens Superbrands has been specifically designed to provide the most exceptional shopping experience.” Simon Longland, Head of Menswear at Harrods said: “We wanted to create menswear destination like no other - somewhere that men want to visit, will enjoy visiting, a space to inspire and excite, but most importantly offers an excellent service and product proposition. The boutiques are flagship store concepts, not department store concepts’ When you enter the boutiques, you are totally immersed in the world of the brand – however as these are flagship concepts, it is amped up on a scale not seen in any retail

environment. We’ve focused on furniture, not fixtures, to elevate the boutique experience to something that feels domestic with lounge chairs and side tables.” Designed by David Collins Studio, Men’s Superbrands establishes a new luxury department that combines the aesthetic of classic men’s tailoring with mid-century architectural references, and a newly devised floor plan that engages the consumer and offers ease of navigation and shopability. Extensive research of the Harrods architectural features and archive inspired elements of the design concept, making particular reference to the detailing within, the cabinetry, displays and interiors. The Harrods logo subtly permeates the details, appearing in stitched leather, marquetry and bronze inlay in stone. Mens Superbrands is a department for every man, of every age, from every culture; for fathers and sons. Mens Superbrands is an inclusive space of the most elevated of fashion brands. The history of menswear at Harrods Menswear at Harrods dates back more than 120 years. We launched our first men’s department in 1894 with men’s umbrellas, socks and more. The launch of menswear at Harrods was a pioneering moment for men’s fashion in the United Kingdom. By the turn of the century, Harrods had expanded its offering to include bespoke tailoring, as well as ready-to-wear – a proposition unique for London. Harrods’ commitment to menswear was evident with the opening of the tailoring workshop on Hans Crescent, built to provide a bespoke service to customers looking for suiting. In 1930, menswear took centre stage with the launch of The Man’s Shop. Located on the Ground Floor of the rebuilt Basil Street block, this one-of-a-kind department had its own entrance and became known as the ultimate shopping destination for men, offering the finest tailoring and cutting-edge fashion. www.harrods.com R Junction (Adrien Dirand & David Collins)

Monaco Yacht Show A Superyacht Industry Support Show. September 23 – 26, 2020, Port Hercule, Monaco
T
he Principality of Monaco and Informa have announced a secure, not-for-profit event in 2020 They have confirmed they are working together to deliver an intimate, not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in Port Hercule in September 2020, with full details to be announced in the coming weeks. The proposed event will employ the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness and be dedicated to supporting the speedy recovery of the industry post COVID-19, providing an invaluable platform for designers, brokers, shipyards and other key players within the yachting industry to connect with their customers and share ideas in a safe environment.
Return & Recovery post the COVID-19 Pandemic
Like most industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a marked impact on the international yachting community, with many businesses temporarily closed and staff furloughed, and the usual annual cycle of industry activity severely disrupted. As countries and locations around the world gradually relax lockdown restrictions and ease control measures, it is imperative that the superyacht community is supported in every way possible to help the industry return and recover safely and quickly.
The 30th Monaco Yacht Show in September 2020
With this in mind, The Monaco Yacht Show has been working closely with the Principality of Monaco to determine how best to support the industry in 2020.
1 6 J U LY 2 0 2 0
This year’s Monaco Yacht Show is scheduled from 23 to 26 September. With control measures steadily being relaxed in Monaco, around Europe and internationally, on current course and speed, this should allow for a carefully staged event to still take place this year. Therefore, it is our intention to retain these dates for the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show and work with suppliers and local authorities over the coming weeks to confirm full details of the event. In the spirit of the history and position of the event within the superyacht industry, the 30th Monaco Yacht Show will be run on a not-for-profit basis, recognizing the challenges facing everyone post the COVID-19 pandemic and, therefore, providing direct support to all attendees and exhibitors from across the market. Whilst the intimate nature of the 2020 event will prioritize the safety of participants, both Informa and the Monaco Principality are committed to ensuring the quality of the event and show experience is maintained for everyone. Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive, Informa Markets (organiser of the Monaco Yacht Show) said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on all industries, not least the international yachting community. As we move to the other side of the pandemic, all parts of the industry need to work collaboratively to ensure a speedy return and recovery. We are playing our part by hosting a not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in 2020, providing an opportunity for the community to come together, share ideas, meet with customers and start to rebuild positive momentum.” www.monacoyachtshow.com

nterior designers can help homeowners enhance both their lifestyle and the overall value of their property through sophisticated redesigns, as Neil explains. “Abels moves some of the UK’s most beautiful homes, involving fine art and commissioned furniture pieces requiring specialist care. As a result we often work with home stylists and interior designers for private client projects or directly with the designers to support their moving, storage and specialist installation requirements”.
Maximising the value of your home
Previously considered an option simply for the wealthy, using a home stylist is being used by a growing number of homeowners as a way to enhance sale values before moving. Creating an expertly curated style with unique pieces or renting striking art can help a property stand out in a crowded market. Abels collaborates with a range of home stylists, helping to deliver a return on investment by boosting property value. “For one client having immense trouble selling their home, we worked with a stylist to re-imagine the space, reposition crowded items and store pieces that detracted from the desired style. The property sold amazingly quickly and shortly after we moved the delighted family into their new home, including their stored possessions”.

They work with high profile clients in some of the world’s finest locations to create unique and personal spaces. Susan Fisher, Interior Designer comments, “We often work with clients looking for their home to fit their lifestyle; they may have an ambition, but need someone to help bring it together, or perhaps create something from scratch. Very often clients invest in commissioned pieces of furniture and art - involving a designer in these big purchase decisions helps to get it right”. When it comes to installing furniture, sculptures and works of art a specialist moving partner brings expertise and has the resources to manage the most complex situations - lifting a grand piano into a city apartment on the 15th floor via crane, handling a Fendi Casa – Boca do Lobo or safely transporting an original and delicate piece of fine art. And breathe… how pupils can benefit from meditation
T
he candle is lit, the lights are dimmed. As another busy school day begins, pupils in year 7 close their eyes, focus on their breathing and let their thoughts drift away…. St Benedict’s has recently introduced 20 minutes of meditation each week for all pupils in year 7, and this will eventually be offered to other year groups. Children in the Junior School are also offered a mindfulness session each week after school. This is to support pupils’ mental health, by encouraging them to recognise how they are, emotionally, and to teach them the value of living in the present. Guided by form tutors, meditation provides young people with a valuable oasis of stillness and silence in school life. Feedback has been very positive, with pupils finding meditation relaxing, calming and a good way to focus and to be self-aware. Every day children are constantly bombarded with information, spending most of their energy in their ‘thinking’ brain, losing connection with how they actually feel. Most of us have fallen prey to sensory overload: just look around a train carriage, and note how many people are on their screens – catching up with email, or skimming through social media. We are
almost constantly informed, entertained, petitioned, pestered and diverted. Overstimulation creates excess dopamine in the brain – the neurotransmitter tied to the reward and pleasure centres of the brain. While this makes us feel good, the more we have, the more we need. Common symptoms of overstimulation are the inability to sit still, racing thoughts, headaches, eye strain, insomnia and even depression. Meditation has huge benefits: it can produce the neurotransmitter serotonin, which regulates our mood and alleviates anxiety, increase well-being and focus while reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Research has also highlighted outcomes of increased self-knowledge and self-acceptance through meditation. In making regular space for meditation, St Benedict’s hope to help their young pupils to recharge, mentally; to be aware of their feelings and practise the vital skill of switching off the constant noise of 21st century life. t’s the best of worlds and the worst of worlds! Life in lockdown has been a real challenge for schools. St. Francis’ College has embraced that challenge determined to continue opening the hearts and minds of our students and engendering a sense of community spirit even though separated remotely by screens. We have felt it is important to ensure continuity of learning, encouragement and personal development during this time. To this end, we made sure we provided a very high quality provision offering a selection of approaches to teaching and learning including face to face teaching which reflects the variety used in the classroom. Staff have been committed to ensuring each pupil’s learning needs are being met by answering individual queries from pupils and responding to parental questions via e mail. The College has continued to provide pastoral support and care through form times, assemblies and individual teacher attention. We have delivered a full timetable including PE workouts, Individual needs support, even music lessons as well as addressing issues of screen time and workload to ensure personal well-being in this new environment. The College is providing the highest possible standard of education under these extraordinary conditions and whilst we cannot provide the daily social interaction and hubbub of friendship groups, we are delivering all other aspects of the curriculum spiritually, intellectually, pastoraly and morally. To help our families feel connected and supported, we invite parents to our weekly assemblies, provide daily

The principles of preparing for a whole school reopening The new Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s talks about planning for a September reopening, for all age groups, and his vision for the Collegiate.
S
tarting the next academic year as the new Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate will be a very different experience to that which I had envisioned when I was first appointed. Having been in education over 30 years, 17 of these as the head of large UK and international independent schools, I’ve seen some change in practice. The challenges facing schools across the UK in preparing for full reopening in September - as we’ve heard said many times already - are unprecedented. With key worker and Forces boarding students staying on campus throughout lockdown, and a successful welcoming of our Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 cohort in early June, we now have plenty of experience of operating in a controlled lockdown. QE has complied with, and gone beyond, the measures required by government and we have committed ourselves to the BSA School Safe Charter. We are using this experience to ensure we have adaptable plans in place, as we welcome students back at the start of term. We have issued guidance to our students and parents on the measures we are taking to keep the campus as safe as possible, whilst maintaining the welcoming and happy atmosphere that they know and love. Our location is ideal. Queen Ethelburga’s benefits from a highly secure, rural campus, set in the stunning North Yorkshire countryside. It is looking increasingly likely that school will be

reopening in September without the social distance restrictions we have now, however, we are still planning to bring our boarders back two weeks earlier in August, so that we can offer quarantine if necessary, but also to offer a curriculum preparation programme for the year ahead. Our priorities for the next year build on QE’s success story to date. We know that the key to academic excellence is the consistency in quality of teaching, therefore this will always be the focus for the Collegiate. Continuous improvement is also key. We will be reflecting on everything we do and will always seek feedback from our students, parents and teachers so that we understand our community needs and find ways to meet them. We will continue to find ways to broaden and improve the curriculum and enrichment opportunities we offer, and extend students learning beyond the restraints of the classroom. We will use our recent online teaching and learning experience to develop our IT strategy, taking the opportunity to develop e-learning in an impactful way. Through our academic, pastoral and enrichment programmes, we will continue to develop the personal qualities of our students, such as leadership, resilience, critical thinking and responsibility. As always, we will prioritise the safeguarding, health and wellbeing of all our students and staff. To find out more about QE, visit www.qe.org

Make-up artists share their top tips for a naturally sun-kissed look. Katie Wright gets her glow on.
AVOIDing bronzer mistakes 4 8 J U LY 2 0 2 0
3. Incorrect placement “After you prep properly, then you can start to look where your placement goes,” says Carta. “With bronzer, it’s across the cheekbones and across the bridge of the nose where the sun would hit you naturally.” You can also use matte bronzer to gently contour your face. “So if you’ve got a wide face, you want to slim it down by putting bronzer in certain areas,” Carta says. “Use the same placements that you would do with contouring technique, which is a ‘C’ shape around the temples.”
“Skincare is a tool to make your skin beautiful and healthy and glowing”
With holidays to sunny, far-flung destinations pretty much impossible right now, if you want a tan this summer, the old ‘fake it till you make it’ adage is more relevant than ever. Bronzer is the easiest option if you want to get a gorgeous glow in no time, but it’s still possible to go overboard, pick the wrong shade or end up with uneven patches. That’s why we’ve enlisted a pair of pro make-up artists to school us on how to create a subtle, sun-kissed look with either cream or powder formulas. Here are five common mistakes - and how to avoid them, plus our pick of the best bronzing products.
1. Not prepping skin properly “Skincare is a tool to make your skin beautiful and healthy and glowing,” says Julia Carta, celebrity makeup artist on behalf of Cetraben. “Using skincare the right way, you’re going to get a beautiful canvas.” She recommends moisturising with Cetraben Natural Oatmeal Moisturising Cream (£6.99 - was £8.99, Boots), which will create a smooth, hydrated base, whether you’re using cream or powder bronzer.
2. Choosing the wrong shade “Making sure you get the right bronzer for your skin tone is so important, because getting the wrong one can either make you look orange, ashy or like there’s no make-up on you,” says Bobbi Brown make-up artist Zara Findlay. How do you find the perfect shade? “Your bronzer should be the same undertone as your skin - cool, warm, olive, or neutral - and should be the natural colour your skin tans,” Findlay says. “The easiest way to see if it is the perfect colour for you, is to place the bronzer against your chest and see if the bronzer lifts and compliments your skin tone.” J U LY 2 0 2 0 4 9
Fashion & Beauty
4. Only using one type of bronzer Bronzers usually fall into one of two camps: matte or shimmer. Carta recommends combining the two to create a three-dimensional look. “Use the matte where you put your contouring powder, then where you want your highlights, use the the shimmery one. “That’s a clever way of doing it - it’s what I do a lot when I’m working on celebrities, because it gives them that beautiful subtle glow.”
5. Forgetting your neck The cheekbones are the most important area for bronzer, but it’s important to finish off with a light dusting of colour over the rest of the face to even out your skin tone. “Always bring the bronzer down to your neck - you don’t want to look like two separate people!” Carta warns. “To define the jawline and get rid of a double chin, you should blend it in - and don’t forget your ears as well.”

STRAPPY SANDALS

A pair of sexy, ankle-tie sandals is a must-have this summer. Katie Wright reveals her top picks.

Topshop Black Wrap Sandals, £26.10 (was £29)
oliver bonas Rope Tie Black & White Studded Sandals, £49.50
River Island Gold Chain Ankle Barely There Heeled Sandals, £45
If you make one purchase from the shoe department this summer, it has to be a pair of strappy sandals - but not just any kind. The focus is firmly on the ankles this season, at least according to the catwalks, where skiny straps, ropes and ribbons of all kinds were wound round models’ legs. At JW Anderson, the rope-ties of flat sandals were wrapped round trouser legs too, proving the transitional power of this trend - but now that we’re heading into summer proper, it’s all about bare legs and sexy sandals. That doesn’t mean you have to totter around on stiletto heels, however. Take your cue from Toga SS20 with Nineties-style squaretoed flats, or chunky ‘flatforms’ for a bit of height with maximum comfort. As for stilettos, there are plenty of party-ready options out there too, from rainbow-bright hues to metallic tones with chain detailing. Spurred by the catwalk focus on natural materials such as raffia, espadrilles with extra-long ankle ties are making a comeback too. Whether flat or wedge, neutral toned or in a summery bright, they’re perfect for pairing with floaty dresses or linen shorts.

s summer approaches, we tend to put our winter clothes away and bring out our warm weather outfits. The same ethos is often applied to our beauty bags: when the sun comes out, we pack up our dark lipsticks and eyeshadows in favour of brighter colours. However, this doesn’t always have to be the case. While you might associate berry lipsticks with autumn and winter, designers like MaxMara and Rick Owens made a strong case for darker pouts this season. It’s a surprising choice for the spring and summer months, but still totally wearable. It’s a way of experimenting with make-up without having to draw anything wacky on your face, or even learn any new techniques. Admittedly, you don’t want to look like Morticia Addams did your make-up in the middle of summer, which is why we asked Stila’s lead make-up artist Sascha Jackson for her top tips...

methods of her own, saying: “You can use some lip balm and an old toothbrush and gently scrub your lips until super smooth. Or, my personal favourite is making my own home-made lip scrub using coconut oil and brown sugar (if you only have white then that’s fine too). Mix them together in a small pot and work into the lips for a minute or two, then wipe away. Your lips will be super-smooth and soft.”
Preparation
With any type of make-up, it’s important to prep your skin properly so the products glide on seamlessly. The same logic applies to your lips - and priming them is even more important when you’re wearing a bold, statement colour. “First, exfoliate your lips to get rid of any excess dry skin,” advises Jackson. It’s not like you need fancy new products to get soft, smooth lips, because there are plenty of home remedies which work just as well. The make-up artist has a few favourite DIY J U LY 2 0 2 0 5 5

For super-hydrated lips, you might be tempted to use lip balm or oils before applying lipstick, but Jackson warns against this as they “may hinder the performance of your lipstick - so make sure you wipe away any excess product”.
Application
Luckily, applying lipstick is one of the easiest things you can do in the world of make-up - all you need to do is draw the colour onto the shape of your pout. However, Jackson says: “The bolder colour, the more precise you will need the finish to be” - so you might want to try something different than just swiping on lipstick. She suggests using a lip brush or a small, dense eyeshadow brush: “Load up the brush, then start by lining your lips, as you would a lip liner. Lining first makes sure you have crisp, neat edges. Then, you can then fill in the middle and any gaps - making sure your lips are evenly coated with product.”
Finishing off the look
Illamasqua Antimatter Lipstick in Turntable, £10 (was £20)
Jackson calls this trend for darker lips a “welcome change from the usual summery shades of corals and pinks. But wearing a darker, bold lip in the summer months needs adapting from how you would perhaps wear it in the winter season, to make sure it keeps within the summer vibe.” This means you need to think about how your dark lip pairs with the rest of your make-up. Instead of going for a smokey eye, Jackson

says: “I love pairing a dark berry lip with a contrasting pop of colour on the eyes. Nothing bold or crazy - just a bright eyeliner or a wash of a pastel shade will do. Think of wearing a dark berry lip with a yellow eyeliner, or pairing a deep burgundy brown lip with a wash of turquoise shadow.” She also recommends using bright and summery make-up for your skin. “Keep everything light and glowy,” Jackson suggests. “Try using an illuminating primer under your foundation, use highlighter on the cheekbones and high points of the face, and try to keep textures to a cream formula, as opposed to matte powder. he Wilkinson family have been in the glass business since the 1920’s, when Frank Wilkinson had a glass cutting shop in Stourbridge, the home of the English crystal industry. Currently David Wilkinson, the third generation of the family to run the business with his wife Mandy, their 4 daughters and the office dog Oscar. David is recognised as one of the UK’s most knowledgeable authorities on historic lighting. In 1986 David was granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment to HM the Queen as glass restorer and still holds the honour today. Their shiny black vans with the royal coat of arms are instantly recognisable around London. They are able to recreate almost any chandelier by copying originals or by working with new designs and drawings. They have the skills and expertise to use a combination of new or antique pieces from their stock and newly blown glass and metalwork to construct chandeliers in a variety of styles and sizes. Now based in rural Bredgar in Kent, they employ 18 staff manufacturing and restoring chandeliers and glassware from all over the world, they also clean customer’s chandeliers on site particularly for the City Livery Halls, private banks and clubs. They take chandeliers apart and clean them by hand. They do
not spray them with solvents that can cause untold damage and leave a film to attract dust. Whilst onsite, they will check over the chandelier for electrical faults and damaged parts and will compile a report for the customer. They also carefully pack chandeliers for shipping and they have a warehouse for storing customers chandeliers and lights while they are having renovation works at their properties. Wilkinson regularly work or clean the chandeliers at all the Royal Palaces in London and their other customers include several middle eastern royal families, the National Trust, English Heritage and dozens of stately homes. Spencer House in St James’s is undoubtedly London’s finest surviving 18th century town house and they have 5 of Wilkinson’s finest Adam style chandeliers, a short walk away, the magnificent Lanesborough Hotel on Hyde Park Corner has 50 handmade Wilkinson chandeliers from the suite of three huge Baltic style chandeliers in the Michelin starred Celeste restaurant to fine reproductions of 19th century English chandeliers by Perry and F&C Osler Their highly skilled glass cutters are able to remove chips from the rims of glasses, bowls and vases, remove stains from decanters and fit new legs, bowls and feet to wine glasses. 2020 will be remembered for the year of the coronavirus but it will also mark a new chapter in the Wilkinson company history. New glass melting furnaces have been built and assembled a few miles away at their industrial unit in Sittingbourne and renowned glass blower Carl Nordbruch will give Wilkinson’s a unique edge, being able to blow, cut and polish anything in lead crystal. www.wilkinson-ltd.com 01795 830000

Adding a touch of shine to a building Awnings in a new metal look as a special highlight
T
he metal style has long since been a focal element in the furnishing world – whether furniture, accessories, wall colours or façade elements. Now awnings too are starting to appear in the hip metal style. Metallic paints are now embellishing three models from manufacturer markilux, giving awnings a sense of anything from classic to modern chic. Metal is elegant and robust. And that is why it has become popular for furnishings and in interior design. The trend has now spread to the awning world. Manufacturer markilux is offering its award-winning models MX-3, MX-1 and MX-1 compact as a metal version with a new colour range: the “Selection MX”.
Style suits every building
“The surfaces, which range from natural to elegant, and the timeless design of the awnings result in a harmonious duet”
The colours are intended to further underline the individual chic of the three awnings. The front panels of the models now feature real metal paint and are radiant in earthy copper tones, bronze and brass. The high metal content means the special paints naturally develop an attractive, almost artistic patina the older they get. This rustic charm, encased in a modern awning design, particularly suits older buildings and country house architecture. As does the version in black/ silver or white/silver effect paint with a metallic grain. Luxurious colours, which are more on the classic side, team up with metallic shades in warm ruby red and amber, in emerald green and pebble beige. 7 0 J U LY 2 0 2 0
Nowadays not only tables, chairs or walls feature the trendy metal look: awnings are now also beginning to appear in this style. Manufacturer markilux is offering three of its models with a completely new panel colour range: the “Selection MX”. Its colours suit every type of building.
They add pure elegance to the understated colours of the awning housing, something that perfectly suits current living trends. The surfaces, which range from natural to elegant, and the timeless design of the awnings result in a harmonious duet – all corresponding to the colours and materials of the garden, patio and furniture.
Choosing colours made simple
To ensure customers quickly find the perfect awning, the “Selection MX” range offers ten coordinated recommendations for colour combinations of panel, housing and awning cover. The MX-3 also comes in eight additional tone-in-tone options from the “Special Architecture edition”. This edition focuses on vibrant shades of the previous colour variants, which are still also available, and on non-colour accents. Naturally, customers can arrange all colours individually to suit their own particular taste in the range offered. This means everyone can express their preference for special colour effects and materials in their own personal style, right down to their awning. Simple Ways To Feng Shui Finding calm and positive energy at home has never felt more important, says Sam Wylie-Harris. 7 2 J U LY 2 0 2 0
With a growing focus on finding comfort at home and turning our living spaces into calming sanctuaries, this year has reignited our interest in Feng Shui. The ancient Chinese practice is all about creating harmony in a space - but goes far beyond using colour and light to create the right ambience, for instance.
Strategically placing furniture to promote wellness, using artwork and living plants to get the right vibes and keeping rooms clear of clutter all factor. Based on the belief there’s a continuous flow of ‘chi’ - or energy between an individual and their surroundings, thinking about how to arrange our objects to promote good work-life balance has additional appeal right now, with so many more of us adapting to life without a commute. There’s plenty of scope for Feng Shui to feature in gardens and patios too, for an extra boost when you throw open the doors or look out the window. “The practice of Feng Shui aims to strike a balance between the self and the natural world. It can be applied to any room of the home, particularly outdoor spaces, where there’s already a connection with nature,” says Rosheen Forbes, commercial activity & events leader at IKEA UK & Ireland. “Adding plants and greenery is an easy place to start, and depending on the ‘bagua’ (centre of energy), the colours you choose can increase the energy in certain areas. Calculating your bagua map is simple but needs approaching differently depending on your home,” Forbes adds. “If you live in an apartment, align the bottom of the bagua map with the front entrance wall. If you live in a house, use a compass and place the ‘career area’ (bottom middle on the bagua map) where your compass indicates the north. “So, when planning your garden, think about planting blue and purple flowers in your ‘wealth corner’ (south east), and pink, white and red flowers in the ‘relationship corner’ (south west) to increase the energy around love and partnerships. “Furthermore, outdoor mirrors can be used to attract abundance. With its curved shape and smooth flowing lines, an oval mirror can be used to reflect the light from the sun, making the space feel bigger and brighter. For smaller spaces, place two mirrors to face each other so the light bounces off, creating beautiful brightness.” Fancy giving your home some Feng Shui magic? Read on for more tips on how to go about it...

Think about muted tones and textures
“When introducing the tools of Feng Shui into the home you need to think about adding balance and drawing energy into the room,” says Wil Law, home design stylist for John Lewis. “You can start with colours - using muted J U LY 2 0 2 0 7 3

coloured cushions or a wall decoration will brighten a room and tie the look together in one fell swoop. Try to separate work and relaxation Another key Feng Shui tip is to keep your work space separate from your relaxation area, to help balance your work and home life and enable you to properly ‘switch off’ while working from home. Out of sight, out of mind can only be a positive move on many levels - signalling when it’s time to end those video conferencing calls, light a candle and chill out. And just in case you’re wondering, candles should be placed in the bagua of your home - as well as releasing daily stress, their glow brings fiery energy and will keep the ‘chi’ harmonious and happy. But back to the business of a work station: slim, movable tables, deep enough for a laptop and bits and bobs will maximise your desk area, while taking up less room - and they can be rolled away when it’s time to log off. Ikea’s FJALLBO Laptop Table, £55, ticks all the right boxes - and can even double up as a drinks trolley in the garden.
Aim for minimal clutter
The starting point for any positive environment is to keep kitchen work surfaces and table tops as clear as possible. This might mean
tones mixed with natural materials and soft furnishing accessories immediately creates a calming effect. Try a natural wooden armchair (like our Croft Collection Frome Leather Armchair, £899, John Lewis), with muted colours on the walls and textured vases and ornaments with a soft rug or carpet underfoot,” says Law.
“The ancient Chinese practice is all about creating harmony in a space”
Keep colours positive if you’re not into neutral
Of course, colour is subjective, and what’s positive and calming to one person may be undesirable to another. Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper, suggests using colours that reflect your personal happiness - but try to avoid darker colours or too much black, as these can sap positive energy flows throughout the home. “Brighter colours will have an immediately uplifting effect, so this may be the perfect opportunity to create a feature wall. You might even want to go so far as using your ‘commanding position’ (the spot furthest from the door and not in direct line with it) wall as the accent - and earn yourself double Feng-Shui points while you’re at it.” If you’re not sure where to start, check out I Want Wallpaper’s Erismann Paradiso Tropical Leaves Pattern Wallpaper in Jungle Leaf Forest, £12.99 per roll. In Feng Shui, green is the colour of renewal, fresh energy and new beginnings and is believed to help relieve stress. If going green with walls isn’t possible, Whitecroft says to look for accessories to enhance good energy. Living plants, brightly 7 4 J U LY 2 0 2 0
having a good sort-out, and investing in some suitable storage solutions. “Old magazines, dusty ornaments and general bric-a-brac once placed in haste and never removed will not contribute to a positive energy environment,” says Whitecroft. “If you find it hard to part with sentimental clutter, find a box to neatly pack it away. Do be cautious though - simply moving clutter from one spot to another won’t do much to aide your energy flow. Donate to charity shops or find a way to bid farewell to items in order to clear your space, and ultimately, your mind.”
Bring the outside in
If you’re short on outdoor space, stress not. Think about bringing the outside in with some greenery. “Plants are a brilliant way to bring energy into the room, add colour and cleanse the air. They look great in natural baskets or ceramic vases and succulents are easy to care for,” says Law Last but not least, another important Feng Shui tool to build a soothing environment is to consider carved furniture with smooth
edges, over angular and sharp designs. Sharp edges and corners, otherwise known as bad energy ‘sha’, could have a negative effect when you’re unwinding - and right now it’s all about maximising the feel-good factor where we can and letting positive vibes flow!

“But when I talk to them about all the other techniques I can use and the styles I can create they get really excited. It’s a great part of the process as this is when the ideas between us come alive. They really can get involved in the design process – even if they don’t have any idea what they want we can start from scratch. We might use a mood board and work on a brief together before I put some ideas together for them to see.” Nicola’s lights are designed for kitchen counters, kitchen islands, dining tables and restaurants and are also ideal as a cascade in a stairwell or a hallway. She is also collaborating with a company to work on adapting the designs for bathrooms which is an emerging trend. The designs can then be made to IP45 bathroom lights standards. The unique collection is available in 18 different colours, with 14 different flex colour options, but Nicola said she can also mix and match colours and create new colours to order. Her creations are designed so that customers can choose to hang them on their own or in twos or threes or more. They can be mixed with different shapes, sizes or different colours, or can hang from different heights, for a more dramatic effect. “I find that more and more of my clients are looking for customisable goods,” Nicola said. “The majority of customers today want to know they’ve played a part in designing their home. I design my products so they can personalise them. They can stack and change, choose their own colours, there’s a lot they can do so whatever it is they decide to buy for their home they have a real input and can put their own stamp on the design.” www.nicolaschellander.com
“The unique collection is available in 18 different colours, with 14 different flex colour options”
uxury glassware and lighting designer and manufacturer Nicola Schellander has unveiled a new collection of bespoke hand-blown and hand-cast glass lighting and interior accessories. Nicola, a multi-award-winning designer, draws on her years of experience in both the glass and crystal industries to create her unique, elegant designs including lights and chandeliers. Inspired by a gap in the UK’s lighting market - which in the main relies on mass-produced imports - Nicola uses the finest craftsmanship to produce exquisite hand-sculpted designs which are customisable to the buyer’s own specifications. Nicola said: “Perhaps contrary to popular belief, you can do anything with glass, and I realised this was a real niche. “It’s a fascinating material. As part of my work I might mould it, cut it or curve it into shapes using a whole range of different implements. I can hand-sculpt and reheat it over and over to tease out different designs each time. The possibilities are endless.” She added: “With the vast majority of lights in the UK they appear the same from every angle. I create my designs, so they give a different perspective from different angles. Each one is handmade rather than manufactured from moulds, to give them their uniqueness.” Nicola counts interior designers and private buyers among her clients and says much of her enjoyment comes from demonstrating to them just how fluid glass can be. She said: “Sometimes the fluidity of glass can be a real revelation to customers. So, when they first come to me they might be limited in their idea of what they want from me. In general, the majority might have an idea for a moulded design as generally that is what they have always been used to seeing.

Then, it’s time to think about low-level lighting, place spotlights at ground level to illuminate shrubbery and trees, giving an instant wow-factor to the space. Finally add finishing touches such as wall lights near the door, which’ll be very practical once the sun has set and for an extra decorative touch place a pair of garden lanterns near the door. www.lights4fun.co.uk

ince the end of March, the intrinsic value of home and family life has never been more relevant, with many of us living closer and more intimately than we are accustomed to – or possibly ever felt comfortable with! The key to more harmonious co-habitation and survival, in many cases, has been planning space utilisation by creating zonal areas, either consciously or by default. This in turn has led many of us to grasp the unique opportunity to reflect on our domestic environment, and the quality of life that we enjoy within the security and comfort of our homes. In some instances, it’s thrown plans and ideas for a future home project into sharp relief, with a real drive to make it happen sooner rather than later. Richard Dudzicki, principle at RDA Architects, is optimistic about the future of home design, with the level of interest in home building, remodelling and renovating enquiries sharply increased in anticipation of relaxed ‘lockdown’ rules in the coming weeks. “Like many of our clients, we were initially in a state of shock and uncertainty, wondering what the future held and how we would all cope. But as time has elapsed, the crisis in many cases has allowed homeowners to focus on their living space as an alternative to endless video calls, family routines and commuting.
