Named The Celestial Snow Globe, this outstanding creation is a magnificent take on the classic winter decoration, subtly mixing Holographic projections with a white Toile recalling the emblematic haute couture Ateliers’ Toile to produce a poetic interplay of transparency, in which Kim Jones pays tribute to the Dior savoir faire. In another homage to the House’s heritage, the Christmas baubles that seem to float in orbit around the tree recall iconic Dior emblems. Perched atop the tree, Kim Jones’ faithful canine companion, Cookie, delicately hugs Monsieur Dior’s lucky star.

A Christmas Carol comes to Greenwich

T

his festive season, in the magnificent unique setting of the Painted Hall, Goblin Theatre present a vibrant new adaptation of Charles Dickens’s spooky classic tale A Christmas Carol.

GISELLE LUDWIG Giselle Ludwig is an international abstract artist and art historian (MA), born in Montreal, Canada and living and working in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Her mostly large acrylic paintings are created in a spontaneous and unintentional process. She therefore uses different mixed media techniques, materials and tools. With various layers, structures and forms she stimulates the viewers imagination and always tries to create a positive association and atmosphere.

Besides her large abstracts she also creates smaller geometrical paintings like the ones from her new sun series. These works are distinguished by powerfulness, brilliant colors and the minimalistic shape of a circle which symbolizes the energy of the sun and life.

The sun paintings will be part of her next exhibition in London at The Brick Lane Gallery (216 Brick Lane) February 1st to 14th 2022.

Born in the UK but spent 32 years in South Africa and recently returned and settled back in London. Seen by over one million people worldwide, The Art of Banksy has now made its home in London, where over 90 authenticated Banksy pieces gathered from private collections across the globe are exhibited in a 12,000 sq. ft gallery.

Opening to critical acclaim in May 2021, the exhibition has quickly become a must-see addition to the London art scene. It has incredible architecture, mausoleums, and individual graves amongst an eerie gothic setting. A guided tour is well worth the cost, giving insight and knowledge of its fascinating history.

WINTER WALKS RICHMOND PARK One of London’s most breathtaking landscapes and among the best places to enjoy wildlife. The 1,012-hectare space is made up of woodland, grassland and ponds attracting hedgehogs and bats hibernating in winter. But the park is best known for its 630 wild red and fallow deer – so have your camera ready if you want to catch their misty breath on a frosty day. Discover the Isabella Plantation woodland gardens, refuel at Pembroke Lodge tea rooms and enjoy distant views of St Paul’s Cathedral from King Henry’s Mound.

GREENWICH PARK On a crisp winter’s day, there are few better places to be than at the top of Greenwich Park. The 74-hectare space is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it overlooks the National Maritime Museum and the Old Royal Naval College, with the River Thames and Canary Wharf in the distance.

Greenwich Park is an amazing mix of 17th century landscape, stunning gardens and a rich history that dates back to Roman times and a small herd of Fallow and Red deer, harking back to its royal hunting past. There’s also a children’s playground where kids can run around and exhaust themselves.

HOLLAND PARK Located in one of the most desirable areas in London. amble around its formal gardens, loop the woodland in the north of the park then follow the path into Kyoto Garden, a Japanese garden with stone lanterns, a waterfall and carpfilled pond. Look out for herring gull and black-headed gull in winter and squirrels and free-roaming peacocks all year round. The park also has an orangery, tennis courts and a cricket pitch.

HYDE PARK Once the hunting ground for Henry VIII, this large royal park is best known for its famous Speakers’ Corner and Serpentine Lake, home to waterfowl and oarsmen. The Lido only opens for the summer, but the Swimming Club is open all year round so brave folk can swim in frigid waters, sometimes as cold as 4C. For over 150 years, the most dedicated have been getting up early on Christmas morning and swimming in the freezing lake! Hyde Park is also home to the hugely popular Winter Wonderland, open until January 2022.

BATTERSEA PARK With its gardens and sculptures offering the chance to escape through botanics and brief history lessons to far-flung destinations around the world, Battersea Park is one of the prettiest and most varied green spaces to walk in London.

The Grade II-listed, 200-acre park boasts a spot of inner-city tranquillity - the Old English Garden: a walled hideaway in which a lily-covered pond and vibrant foliage is tended to by a Chelsea Flower Show gold medal-winner. he Berkeley has revealed a festive new addition to the hotel with their elegant terrace spot playing host to five cosy wooden cabins – each seating up to eight diners – in addition to counter-top dining.

Abundant with lanterns and flickering candles, the cabins are decked with wreaths, and surrounded by fir trees and fairy lights.

Blankets and heaters are on hand, while a menu of alpine specialties is built around fondue and a show-stopping raclette grill. The Berkeley Winter Cabins offer a menu of seasonal dishes served in convivial eating style.

Starters include a trio of rostis flourished with different toppings, a hearty oxtail soup with toasted Gruyère croûte and short-rib croquettes. Mountain-inspired comfort food follows – from veal schnitzel to spätzle and cheese fondue. For indulgent ‘cook your own’ dishes; a feast of carefully-sourced cheeses, meats and vegetables are brought to the table for diners to pick and choose, customise and grill.

For pudding, guests can select from a menu of decadent desserts designed to share, from apple tatin and pear and ginger crumble, to flambéed baked Alaska featuring three different flavours of ice cream. A chocolate croquembouche is set to be a retro showstopper.

The drinks list showcases a wide range of craft beer, wines, champagnes, hot cider, classic cocktails and mocktails. The beer menu, in particular, is a key focus – all hail from Belgium including some rare bottles for guests to discover.

The truth is that Champagne has many gastronomic possibilities, but it takes understanding the basic elements of the wine to unlock the perfect food pairing. Chaource, a cheese local to the region, will also work well, as the creamy texture of the cheese will balance with the soft floral notes and gentle citrus aromas.

Jean Boucton Première Cuvée a blend of Pinot Noir and Meunier, this Champagne has rich flavours of peach and apricot which will balance well with stronger flavours and textures, such as smoked salmon or trout. If you’re after something a bit more comforting before Christmas day, pair with a hearty fish pie.

Jean Boucton Grand Heritage has been aged for over 10 years in the bottle, developing intense notes of pastry, brioche and toast over layers of citrus and apple. Risks of obesity

Whilst fat is required for healthy functioning of the body, it is vital to take steps in preventing and reducing excess fat that results in obesity due to the associated risk of serious conditions, such as heart disease and several types of cancer, as well as the impact on fertility and reproductive health.

Obesity can also affect your quality of life and lead to psychological problems, such as depression, low self-esteem and stress.

Treating obesity

Whilst the most effective ways to prevent and treat obesity is to exercise regularly and to follow a healthy diet, this can be challenging to sustain long term and manage within a busy daily schedule.

What stories are contained in the rings you wear?

t’s no surprise that Olivia Cummings is always being asked about the jewellery she’s wearing. The founder of Cleopatra’s Bling never leaves her eclectic country cottage without several earrings, a pendant or two, and some glinting, colourful rings. They are like relics discovered at an archeological site, and yet the shining materials and craftsmanship speak to contemporary sensibilities of refinement. One day she was learning from the old gentlemen who apply traditional jewellerymaking techniques in the Grand Bazaar. Then next she was setting up her jewellery studios in Florence where the brand’s bespoke pieces are crafted. At all times she artfully combines the handmade with the luxurious.

The results are reflected in her designs, which catch the eye thanks to their unmatched blend of centuries-old symbolism and modern, bohemian shapes. She’s happy to answer the curious questions about the lotus embossed Kamala Ring on her finger, or the resin intaglio pendants that hang at her throat. It gives her the opportunity to share the rich roots of the designs that connect to Eastern mysticism, the Ottoman empire, and ancient Rome. These stories are documented on her website and Instagram, so that each new page reveals another fascinating tale of the past.

She believes in the ethics of making these amulets which are so rich in myth and symbolism available to clients in versatile ways. The glossy lip

Legendary make-up artist Bobbi Brown, who recently launched new brand Jones Road, loves a high-shine red lip for a glam party look.

She says: “Like my super bright red nails that I love to wear, I adore a pop of colour and not much else. Distract from tired eyes and add a festive pop of colour with the new Jones Road Cool Gloss in Poppy Red. It is really red – no yellow, bright red. I think it’s super wearable with the sheen, versus a matte red lip (not a gloss like you would imagine). I would wear the red gloss with just mascara and a little Miracle Balm on my skin.”

Named after her hometown, Winona Laura Horowitz was born in Winona, Minnesota in 1971.

After taking acting classes and adopting the stage name Winona Ryder, the 15-year-old made her film debut in Lucas (1986) which was quickly followed by her breakout role as Lydia Deetz in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, for which Ryder’s hair was dyed jet black.

Ryder and Depp started dating and became one of the most famous Hollywood couples of the time.

Depp declared that he was madly in love with his Edward Scissorhands co-star and even got ‘Winona Forever’ tattooed on his arm. Sadly, the pair split after four years and Depp chose to change his tattoo to read ‘Wino Forever’.

By then a regular on the red carpet, Ryder was all about understated glamour in her 20s, often seen in sweeping black dresses with slicked back hair and a red lip.

Occasionally she would mix it up with a pink, red or cream column dress, but there was always something timeless about Ryder’s red carpet style.

The New Luxe

he Funky Appliance Company, based in West Sussex, co-founded by husband-and-wife team Joe and Sadie Sillett are back with their latest crowdfunding round on Seedrs, and are looking to make it a perfect seven out of seven funding rounds.

The company, which was founded in June 2016, has raised a total of £1million investment to date and has three core products: a Funky Toaster, a Funky Kettle and a Funky Iron.

The Funky Appliance Company partnered with Europe’s leading SDA (Small Domestic Appliances) and Housewares distributor RKW (Retail Knows Why) based in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with distribution of the company’s eye-catching products now gathering pace with 81 retailers in the UK and Ireland now ranging Funky goods, as well as several leading UK online retailers.

‘The Eighth Wonder Of The World’: Exbury Gardens And The Rothschilds by Lionel de Rothschild and Francesca Murray Rowlins (Exbury Gardens Limited, £30) Anyone who has ever visited Exbury Gardens in Hampshire and delighted in its stunning 200 acre woodland garden and admired its blousy, beautiful rhododendrons, will appreciate this coffee table thumper of a book whose subject gardens recently celebrated their centenary. It all began in 1919 when Lionel de Rothschild pursued his love of woody plants by creating a garden where they would thrive. The gardens first opened to the public in 1955 and this book, written by his grandson and namesake, charts the history of the garden right up the the present. Readers can pore over the collections of rare plants, shrubs and trees, which are still on show today. If you’ve never been to Exbury Gardens and you read this, it’ll be top of your list to visit.

Simply Flower Arranging: A Step-by-Step Guide by Judith Blacklock (The Flower Press Ltd, £18.99) Your loved one may know how to grow flowers, but do they know how to arrange them?

They could find help in this easyto-follow guide from a top flower arranger, who presents some truly inspirational ideas. How to create eyecatching displays when you are entertaining, or even if you fancy some quirky floral forms, Blacklock will have the answer, both for contemporary and classic homes.

Herb by Mark Diacono (Quadrille, £26) If you have a foodie in the family who has decided they want to grow their own herbs, this excellent plot-to-plate exploration from the food writer and gardener Mark Diacono will provide some inspiring ideas and information. Thirteen Ways To Smell A Tree by David George Haskell (Gaia, £12.99) Ever considered how a tree smells? Or how a tree might evoke memories of childhood, or a particular time in a particular place?

This dip-in, dip-out offering would be perfect to peruse in a quiet moment over the festive season. Written by biologist, awardwinning author and academic, David George Haskell, it contains 13 beautifully written essays that explore the evocative scents of trees, from the conker tree that takes us back to childhood, to the pine tree hanging from the rear-view mirror.

Rebugging The Planet by Vicki Hird (Chelsea Green, £12.99) Even if your gardening loved one has a phobia about insects, this fascinating little tome may convert them into turning over a new leaf about creepy crawlies, given their importance to the planet. After all, a world without bugs would mean no flowers, no trees, no crops and no food. More than 40% of insect species are at risk of extinction while a third more are endangered, warns environmental campaigner Vicki Hird, who says it’s up to us to rebug our attitudes. She looks at the solutions for rebugging, offering tips, advice and activities including rewilding, making bug-friendly choices with food and clothes and learning how to rebug a variety of spaces.

The Green Indoors by Maddie and Alice Bailey (Hardie Grant, £16.99) So, we all know the popularity of houseplants soared during lockdown, and this book will offer inspiration to those who may not have had much luck with indoor plants in the past.

The authors will not only find you the perfect houseplant, but will show you where to put it and how to relocate plants to improve their growth and help them thrive.

Grow Organic Salad Leaves And Greens by Charles Dowding (Green Books, £14.99) Charles Dowding has long been encouraging gardeners to grow their own in the easiest way possible, using ‘no-dig gardening’ so you won’t break your back doing it. No matter how large the plot or small the windowsill, budding growers can learn how to master the secrets of the seasons so they can have a tasty crop whatever the weather.

As well as traditional favourites, the book features less well-known salad leaves along with recipes to get the most flavour out of them. It’s an ideal gift for anyone who wants to lower their carbon footprint and cut the cost of their shopping bills.

Melinda – lives abroad and so can’t be here in person to act for herself.

What were you hoping to achieve?

Melinda explains that asking Buy To Let Hunter to manage her flat in Richmond as a short-term serviced accommodation makes sense whilst she is spending time abroad.

“I wanted to keep my flat, to maintain a toe hold in London, but it was a purely commercial decision to sweat my assets whilst I choose to live somewhere else.”

She explains that she didn’t think too much about traditional pensions during her working life; instead, she mostly invested in properties in the 80s and 90s where she could afford them and by default she now depends on that rental income in her retirement.

Why did you choose BTLH? Melinda explained “The onset of Covid caused a dearth of options in the lettings market. The world suddenly changed in rental terms.”

Melinda spoke to the agents who used to handle her property and found their model no longer really be fit for purpose, for her anyway.

“I needed shorter lets so I can come and go from time to time.“ The BTLH model is flexible and more cost effective for her needs: “The old agents were proposing a 25% charge on any rental income and then a range of expenses that add up to £500-£600 for every letting!”

They were billing her for inventory and administrative costs which

seemed to be in addition to the fees she was already paying.

“It’s one thing if you are having lets of a year or more, but it really didn’t make sense for the shorter term serviced accommodation model that I needed.” She explained.

Melinda was also unsure about the due diligence when the agents took references for her tenants as they always seemed to be outsourced – “BTLH have a much more personal and less algorithmic approach!” she laughed, the advantage of having a very small office!

So, Melinda, what has your experience been working with BTLH? “It’s been very good!” she explained from Switzerland where she is looking forward to the coming ski season in her chalet up a mountain.

She has a lot of girlfriends who got in to “buy to let” who are local so don’t need to rely as heavily on an agency as Melinda does. “I can trust BTLH to make the right decisions and it helps finance my lifestyle whilst retaining flexibility. ANNIE SLOAN: DECOUPAGE PAPERS

T

his spring, fine artist and colour expert Annie Sloan launches a collection of decoupage papers in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Inspired by the vast archive of botanical drawings from the RHS’s world-famous Lindley Collections, the range includes twelve designs showcasing flora and fauna in styles from Elizabethan Knot garden plans to hand-coloured engravings. Each pack includes two large sheets of decoupage paper, incorporating colours from Annie’s Wall Paint and Chalk Paint™ palettes, alongside a practical guide.

Beloved by the Victorians, decoupage is the art of decorating objects and furniture with paper cut outs until the entire surface is covered. Pictures from books and cards or patterned embossed paper were cut out and sealed with 30 to 40 layers of varnish till the “stuck on” look disappeared. Where the traditional method was

extremely laborious, with Annie’s decoupage papers it’s all done for you – flowers and wildlife in harmonious colours are ready to be cut out, arranged and stuck down with just two coats of Image Medium, Annie’s special adhesive. If the completelycovered Victorian style isn’t for you, papers can be coordinated with the base colour of the wall or furniture to create a softer, pared-back look with cut outs positioned delicately over a larger area.

“There’s been a big resurgence in the decorative, Bloomsbury-style aesthetic recently and decoupage fits in to that perfectly. It’s a delightful decoration technique with so much history,” says Annie.

ayering personal experience with ideas taken from literature and conversation, Bridget Davies uses the genre of fashion painting to create scenarios, and within these, characters, that would be best described as visual anecdotes; blended fact and fiction that tell secret stories drawn from her own experience and desires.

Inspired by the amazing fashion illustrations of the Forties and Fifties, the main protagonists are usually female because she is herself a woman, and there is an element of self-projection in all her work. The ladies in Bridget’s paintings are elegant and confident, but they are also playful and have a definite sense of mischief about themselves; they are THE DETAILS used to stealing the show. Bridget also has an interest in modern fashion and the wonderful creations designed by today’s fashion designers and uses her ideas and different mediums and substrates to paint more modern pieces to capture the ever- changing face of contemporary fashion.

Bridget’s original works can be found not only in her representing galleries but also in hotels and theatres in London and overseas and she exhibits her work regularly at Art Fairs both in the UK and in major cities internationally.

When architectural spatial planning and reconfiguration may be required, we are always careful to retain as much of a home’s original fabric and detailing as possible.

Pairing classic features with more contemporary elements such as Crittall doors creates a nice contrast, nodding to the property’s heritage while being aesthetically pleasing for modern living.

Natural Materials

To make an interior truly timeless, we champion materials that are built to last. When it comes to furnishings, natural fabrics are always favored. Linen is a good choice for window treatments such as curtains or blinds. For something luxurious, we recommend DECEMBER 2021 97

Intelligent Design

One of the main challenges when designing London homes can be narrow corridors and often disjointed layouts. In our Parsons Green Townhouse, we excavated the basement to make way for a media room, utility and bedroom. In terms of storage, our team design bespoke solutions including custom cabinetry or freestanding pieces to make use of space that would otherwise have been wasted.

Lighting should also be carefully considered. We adopt a layered approach by using a combination of wall, floor, and overhead lighting.
