A GLITTERING OPERA PRODUCTION IN A BEAUTIFUL LONDON SETTING

W

ith the challenges the world has faced over the past few years and continues to face today, the positive impact of creativity and the performing arts has never been more powerful. Blackheath Halls in South-East London has been running a successful Community Opera project since 2007, producing one large-scale production each year performed across several days. Each opera brings together a cast of community performers of all ages and abilities as well as professional opera singers and production teams, all united in their passion for musicmaking. This Autumn, Blackheath Halls Opera presents Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, the 20th century operetta based on a 1759 comic novella by French philosopher Voltaire with four performances starting on 27th September, with one being BSL signed. The production will enjoy an updated setting in the 1980s. It tells the story of the hectic adventures and extravagant escapades of a young man, travelling through a divided Europe (and beyond), in search of love, happiness and resolution.

The stellar cast of principal professional singers include tenor Nick Pritchard, mezzo-soprano Sarah Pring (recently seen on television co-hosting Anyone Can Sing on Sky Arts), bass-baritone Frederick Long and soprano Ellie Neate. The performances will be accompanied by the Blackheath Halls Orchestra, under the baton of Christopher Stark, co-founder of the Multi-Story Orchestra in Peckham. Blackheath Halls will welcome director Sebastian Harcombe for the first time; former Head of Acting at RADA with an abundance of experience teaching, coaching and directing theatre companies across the country. Blackheath Halls Community Engagement Manager Rose Ballantyne, has been involved with Blackheath Halls Opera since the very beginning. She says: These past few years have demonstrated to us how crucially important community music-making is. Nothing beats seeing the faces of our fabulous community lit up and engaged in a live performance and we are very excited for our Autumn production this year. blackheathhalls.com

Queen’s London property

T

he value of the Queen’s UK property portfolio has reached new heights in 2022, with the figure more than £3billion according to a new study. Research has estimated that Her Majesty’s royal property portfolio may be worth up to £3.7 billion, with royal residences including castles, palaces and luxurious lodges across London and the UK. The study, from retirement property experts McCarthy Stone, uncovered the costs of the Sovereign’s London homes as the UK celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June, looking at how much it would cost to buy or rent the spectacular British landmarks.

The cost to buy London’s royal residences

Buckingham Palace, the most famous royal residence and one of the UK’s most attractive tourist attractions, is unsurprisingly the priciest property in the Queen’s portfolio and is estimated at £1.3bn. The second most expensive London property is St James’s Palace, priced at £600m. Next is Kensington Palace, which comprises of multiple apartments. Kensington Palace, If the Queen were a regular landlord, Prince William and Kate may pay around £179,400 in rent per month to live in their apartment at the central London residence. However, Nottingham Cottage, a two-bedroom property nestled within the grounds of Kensington Palace, has been estimated to have the most affordable rent of all the residences. ‘Nott Cott’, the former home to both William and Kate, and later Harry and Meghan, could expect £7,900 in rent per month.

he Monaco Yacht Show has announced new developments in its themed exhibition areas, once again proving its will to immerse visitors in the world of superyachting. The 2022 edition is set to confirm the status of the MYS’s “seducation” programme, which was launched last year. This three-year plan of action is designed to attract a new generation of yachting clients, thanks to two core concepts: “education” and “seduction” (aka “seducation”).

Education: meeting trade experts in themed exhibition areas

The show’s themed exhibition areas have been redistributed more efficiently, making it easier for the new wave of yachting customers to meet experts in their respective fields and to discover the range of products and services required to successfully complete their yachting project. The organisers are therefore revamping the Dockside Area, the Sailing Yacht Area and the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, all three of which were launched in 2021. Be it in the water or on the docks, the Dockside Area features superyachts, tenders and all manner of services directly related to the 4 2 J U LY 2 0 2 2

world of yachting. Visitors can meet the shipbrokers, shipyards and designers who worked on the various yachts on display. The Sailing Yacht Area will be relocated to Quai l’Hirondelle, on the inner side of Port Hercule. The Yacht Design & Innovation Hub - dedicated to future yacht design projects - is set to triple in size, including a 100-m² upstairs conference area.

THE DETAILS

These areas will complement the show’s other themed exhibitions: • Parvis Piscine: yacht interior design and decoration companies, • Upper Deck Lounge (at Parvis Piscine): luxury products and services, • Quai Antoine Ier: yacht tenders, water toys, luxury cars and motorbikes, • Darse Sud tent: equipment manufacturers and yachting services, • Quai Albert Ier tent: yacht-related equipment, maintenance and service companies.

Dockside Area will be open to the public. General Manager of the MYS Gaëlle Tallarida had this to say: “The Monaco Yacht Show made its grand return to the international event scene in 2021, sporting a 3-year development programme with a clearly-stated goal: to promote superyachting among a new generation of clients”. The MYS has also announced the 6th edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit. Held on Tuesday 27 September 2022 at the Monaco Yacht Club, the event will address practical questions on the topics of yacht chartering, buying and building in front of an prequalified audience of experienced or new yacht owners and charterers.

‘SPIRIT OF INNOVATION’ OFFICIALLY THE WORLD’S FASTEST ALL-ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT

R

olls Royce have announced that their all-electric ‘Spirit of Innovation’ aircraft is officially the world’s fastest allelectric aircraft, having set two new world records which have now been independently confirmed. The aircraft reached a top speed of 555.9 km/h (345.4 mph) over 3 kilometres, smashing the existing record by 213.04 km/h (132mph). In further runs at the UK Ministry of Defence’s Boscombe Down experimental aircraft testing site, the aircraft achieved 532.1km/h (330 mph) over 15 kilometres – 292.8km/h (182 mph) faster than the previous record. Both records have been officially verified by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the World Air Sports Federation that controls and certifies world aeronautical and astronautical records. During its record-breaking runs, the aircraft, which is part of the UK Government-backed ACCEL or ‘Accelerating the Electrification of Flight’ project, also clocked up a maximum top speed of 623km/h (387.4mph) making it the world’s fastest allelectric vehicle. The aircraft was propelled on its record breaking runs by 400kW (500+hp) electric powertrain and the most power-dense propulsion

As well as a stunning technical achievement, the project and world record runs provided important data for their future electric power and propulsion systems for all-electric urban air mobility (UAM) and hybrid-electric commuter aircraft. The characteristics that ‘airtaxis’ require from batteries, for instance, are very similar to what was developed for the ‘Spirit of Innovation’. Rolls-Royce has an incredible history of flying speed record attempts and breaking records, dating back to the Schneider Trophies of the early 1930’s. The speed achieved by test pilot and RollsRoyce Director of Flight Operations Phill O’Dell in the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ was more than 213.04 km/h (132 mph) faster than the previous record set by the Siemens eAircraft powered Extra 330 LE Aerobatic aircraft in 2017. Never before in the history of the World Air Sports Federation (FAI) record attempts has there been such a significant increase in speed over such a short timeframe, highlighting the rapid pace at which the electrification of aerospace is advancing. THE FERRARI DAYTONA SP3 AWARDED

“Most Beautiful Supercar 2022” At Paris Festival Automobile Association

5 0 J U LY 2 0 2 2

T

he Ferrari Daytona SP3 has been awarded the Grand Prize of “Most Beautiful Supercar 2022” by a panel of expert judges at the 37th Paris Festival Automobile International. This prestigious annual award is held to pay tribute to the sports car chosen by a panel of influential personalities from the world of motoring for its design and aesthetic beauty. The same jury awarded Ferrari’s Chief Design Officer, Flavio Manzoni, with the Grand Prize of Design, in recognition of his original, creative and influential work in the automotive sector. Flavio Manzoni said: “These two important awards are indisputable proof of the levels of quality and excellence reached by the Ferrari Styling Centre, which I have the privilege of leading, and of the sophisticated formal research carried out on the Ferrari Daytona SP3”. On February 6th 1967, Ferrari pulled off one of the most spectacular feats in its entire history when it took the top three places at the 24 Hours of Daytona in the first round of that year’s International World Sports Car Championship. The three cars that shot past the chequered flag in that legendary side-by-side finish on Ford’s home turf – in first place a 330 P3/4, in second a 330 P4 and in third a 412 P – represented the pinnacle of development of the Ferrari 330 P3, a model that chief engineer Mauro Forghieri had significantly improved in each of the three racing car fundamentals: engine, chassis and aerodynamics. The 330 P3/4 perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the sports prototypes of the 1960s, a decade now considered the golden era of closed wheel racing and an enduring reference point for generations of engineers and designers. The design of the Ferrari Daytona SP3, a limited-edition car that joins the ‘Icona’ series, is a harmonious interplay of contrasts, sublimely sculptural, voluptuous surfaces alternating with the kind of sharper lines that revealed the burgeoning importance of aerodynamics in the design of ‘60s and ‘70s racers such as the 330 P4, 350 Can-Am and 512 S. The Ferrari Daytona SP3 sports a naturally aspirated V12, midrear-mounted in typical racing car style. Undisputedly the most iconic of all Maranello’s engines, this power unit delivers 840 cv – making it the most powerful engine ever built by Ferrari – along with 697 Nm of torque and maximum revs of 9500 rpm. The chassis is built entirely from composite materials using Formula 1 technologies that have not been seen in a road car since the LaFerrari, Maranello’s last supercar. The seat is an integral part

of the chassis to reduce weight and guarantee the driver a driving position similar to that of a competition car. This model is the most aerodynamically efficient car ever built by Ferrari without resorting to active aero devices. It can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 2.85s and from zero to 200km/h in just 7.4s: exhilarating performance, an extreme set-up, and the intoxicating V12 soundtrack deliver completely unparalleled driving pleasure delivering exhilarating driving pleasure but also usable performance. From the wraparound windscreen back, the Ferrari Daytona SP3’s cabin looks like a dome set into a sensual sculpture with sinuous wings emerging boldly either side. Another key element is the butterfly doors, which have an air box integrated into them to channel air to the side-mounted radiators. The front of the Ferrari Daytona SP3 is dominated by two imposing wings that feature outer and inner crests: the latter dive into two air vents on the bonnet, making the wings look wider. The rear bodywork highlights the powerful appearance of the wing by the repetition of the twin-crest theme and the aerodynamic vent that boosts its three-dimensional volume. The compact, tapered cockpit combines with the wings to create a powerful tail with a central backbone element inspired by the 330 P4. The naturallyaspirated V12, the living beating heart of the new Ferrari Icona, is revealed in all its glory at the end of this backbone. The Ferrari ‘Icona’ series was launched in 2018 with the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2, which were inspired by the competition barchettas of the 1950s that helped earn the marque its legendary status in motorsport with a string of prestigious victories. The ‘Icona’ series celebrates Ferrari history by reinterpreting the timeless styling of the marque’s most iconic cars to radically modern effect using the most innovative materials and technologies available today. The idea of taking inspiration from a particular time in history, which lies at the core of the Icona concept, goes much further than merely reusing styling cues from the past. Rather the aim is to distil the very essence of an era and using it as a springboard to create new concepts that themselves are unique enough to become icons for future generations. ferrari.com J U LY 2 0 2 2 5 1

HOW TO GET IN ON THE TREND FOR

ew things are as classic as a suit – and tailoring has come a long way. Once the reserve of menswear (with women wearing the odd skirt set), it slowly made itself into womenswear on the red carpet, and is now firmly part of our everyday fashion vocabulary. However, suits can still be a bit daunting – you might think they’re only for formal events, or feel a bit heavy for summer, for instance. But one look on Instagram will tell you summer suiting is having a massive moment right now. It’s also an easy way to express your personality, while looking chic and put-together with relatively little effort.

PINK CO-ORD JACKET, £34.99; PINK CO-ORD TROUSERS, £26.99, AVAILABLE FROM M&CO

THIS IS HOW TO WEAR WARM WEATHER TAILORING THIS YEAR… In pastels…

Pastels for spring might not be groundbreaking, but there’s a reason it’s a classic look. Pale pinks, baby blues and spearmint greens are all perfect for standing out from the crowd in your tailoring. This year, the trend is overwhelmingly for slouchy, relaxed fits. These styles are incredibly versatile – wear with a crisp shirt for office days, a plain white T-shirt and trainers for the weekend, or you could even dress up with heels and silk vests, or corset-style tops underneath for nights out or summer weddings.

In skirt suits…

Channel your inner Cher from Clueless or Fran Drescher from The Nanny in this year’s retro take on suiting. While the last few seasons have been all about suits worn with matching shorts, skirts are back in a big way – and the shorter, the better. In May, Selena Gomez showed us how to wear the modern skirt suit while promoting the new series of her TV show Only Murders In The Building, donning a yellow mini paired with a matching jacket. The look feels fresh with a short-sleeved blazer and pearl accent buttons – and Gomez turned to the high street for her look, nabbing the outfit from Mango. Either go for pastel colours like Gomez, lean into the retro vibe with checked prints, or go all-out in bright colours for a really kicky look.

In interesting materials…

Linen blend suits are perfect for summer weather, but what if you want to give your tailoring a bit of a twist this year? We’re seeing a growing trend for choosing classic silhouettes in interesting materials – and it would seem like faux leather snakeskin is having a particular moment. Lil Nas X first showed us how to style a snakeskin suit on the red carpet in 2019, wearing a blue two-piece with a black mesh top underneath. It’s taken a while, but the trend has finally made its way into womenswear – and for a more relaxed take on the look, choose brightly coloured snakeskin prints. Or opt for monochrome if you want a dressier vibe.

In separates…

Wearing a full suit can sometimes feel a bit formal, but if you separate the two pieces you’re basically doubling up on potential outfits in your wardrobe. Tailoring can add a bit of effortless cool to any look – so either try tapered trousers with a plain T-shirt and a light knit over the top, or wear the blazer on its own with BLACK PETITE STRAIGHT jeans. It’s a chance to play around LEG TAILORED TROUSER IN BLACK, £26, with the items you’ve already got AVAILABLE FROM in your closet, creating whole new ROMAN looks to suit how you’re feeling on a given day.

Platinum 22 Eau de Parfum, enlivened with top notes of cool orris, rounded by the comforting scent of oats, and lifted with a sparkle of blackcurrant and lime, gently yields to the radiant heart notes of rich rose with violet leaves, clary sage, black tea, and a touch of black pepper to add a hint of spice. The fragrance then concludes with the warm woody base note of cedarwood enriched by a harmony of smooth amber, musk and tonka bean.

IN BED WITH

FRIDA HOME LONDON

How did the idea for Frida Home London come about?

“We offer beautiful chalk white bedding in both 100% cotton and 100% linen”

We are good friends Nick and Trevor. We have both worked in the retail industry for many years and realised that buying bedding was incredibly complicated and confusing. Even though there is so much choice out there, we wanted to use our skills and experience to simplify things by creating a one-stop destination for premium quality sleep essentials. We have removed all the noise and jargon to simply offer beautiful and incredibly comfortable bedding that is also sustainable.

What is it that makes your brand so unique?

Our entire focus was on building a luxurious, simplified collection with fewer pieces, all the essential ingredients needed to create the most comfortable sleep experience ever, carefully and responsibly sourced and intended to last.

What does Frida Home London offer?

Our beautiful Sleep Collection includes 100% linen and 100% cotton duvet covers, deep fitted sheets and pillowcases, all in our exclusive chalk white colour. We also offer the most sumptuous natural and 6 8 J U LY 2 0 2 2

Eco-friendly alternative duvets and pillows. Everything you need for the most comfortable sleep experience ever!

Where is your bedding made?

We carefully design and create all our own collections using only the finest quality materials. Our bed linen is lovingly made in the historical textile city of Guimaraes in Portugal and our duvets and pillows are made in the UK by expert craftspeople who take pride in the products they fill, sew and finish by hand.

What makes for the perfect night’s sleep?

Making your bed as beautiful and cosy as possible means choosing the finest ingredients, it’s all you need to create the perfect bed in which to relax, sleep and recharge. This includes the calm tranquillity and simplicity of natural white bed linen, a sumptuous duvet and the fluffiest pillows, which will have the power to

transform your sleep health and wellbeing, as well as looking and feeling incredible.

“Buying quality bedding which can last for years will have a significantly smaller environmental impact than buying multiple poor-quality pieces over the same time”

Is sustainability important to you?

Very! This is a subject close to our hearts and one we see as being incredibly important. First off, our products are made to last, buying quality bedding which can last for years will have a significantly smaller environmental impact than buying multiple poor-quality pieces over the same time. Every decision we have taken has been made with great care and attention to detail, from sourcing to the production process and packaging. Our journey to sustainability is ongoing and it’s one we are committed to and are continuously looking at other ways to make things better.

Can you give us some examples?

1. All the fibres, fabrics and fillings used in our bedding are responsibly sourced and thoroughly tested, conforming to strict European standards. 2. Our duvets and pillows are made to order right here in the UK and delivered directly to the customer within 1-2 weeks, thereby reducing our carbon footprint. 3. Our natural filled duvets and pillows are Downafresh® certified which guarantees the natural fillings are sourced from cruelty-free suppliers and

are a by-product of the food industry. The feather and down are all sourced from Europe. 4. The Eco-friendly fibre fillings in our duvets and pillows have been produced using recycled plastic bottles and ocean-bound plastic from across Europe which are reprocessed into polyester fibres. Allergy-safe and vegan friendly, so win-win! 5. We have eliminated all single-use plastic and all our products arrive in 100% cotton storage bags, no plastic. Even the buttons on our duvet closures are made of natural hemp. 6. The boxes our beautiful bedding arrive in are made from at least 68% recycled materials and are recyclable, biodegradable and compostable.

So, who is Frida?

It’s probably one of the most frequent questions we’re asked. We can reveal that Frida Home London is actually named after Trevor’s very cheeky little miniature Schnauzer Frida, who is our Senior Comfort Tester!

The hottest design trends YVES SOFA BY PORADA

“B&B Italia’s Pochette by Piero Lissoni combines unfixed cushions and a low-slung shape with a creamy grey-ish nude leather”

I

f we’ve learned anything in the past few years, it’s that our homes are places for self-expression and experimentation as well as retreat and sanctuary, the modern interior both exciting and full of life as well as a place to relax and unwind in. The new launches at this year’s Salone del Mobile – Milan’s fashionable furniture fair – echoed these dual desires; colour hovered around the natural end of the spectrum occasionally interrupted with flashes of more vivacious pigments; forms were sculptural yet soft; and materials channelled the organic as well as exaggerating and playing with it. Chapins’ edit of the top trends is a show and tell of the materials, colours, shapes and functions that will come to define the modern home over the next year.

POCHETTE ARMCHAIR BY B&B ITALIA

After taking solitude in nature for so long, we continue to seek to recreate it in our homes via organic shapes, the imperfect and hints at natural intervention. Nature and the implication of time are quietly introduced, pieces created to look like manufacture never happened – did they grow out in the wilderness? Shapes have an accidental feel like they have slowly evolved and perfection is something left behind long ago. Top Pick: Yves sofa by Porada A dainty take on a classic bean sofa, Yves by G. & O. Buratti for Porada has a charismatic a grown-on-a-stalk-in-the-garden shape, a reminder of the power of the organic. Comprised only of calming curves, its

Inside Out

The outdoors is increasingly becoming an extension of our walled-in living areas, spaces to be used routinely and habitually, so it was no surprise to see a bevy of renowned Italian brands stepping into the fresh air and launching incredibly chic all-weather collections. With these new pieces, design comes first and being able to withstand the rain is a quietly integrated feature that’s barely noticeable. Top Pick: The A’mare collection by Edra The A’mare collection by Jacopo Foggini which includes tables, chairs, armchairs, a bench and a sunbed, is designed around a love of the ocean, comprised from flexible polycarbonate slats which embody solidified slices of water. Their vivid turquoise colouring playfully catches and throws light, transporting the user onto a sparkling sea, design that is both utterly minimalist and an audacious statement. 7 2 J U LY 2 0 2 2

for 2022 and beyond matching pouf neatly nestles into the front of the crescent like an oversized seed.

Earth Tones

Physically digging into the immersed-in-nature trend, the neutral hues set to dominate this year are drawn from the ground, spanning pale shades of sand, soft mid-tone clays, and red-tinted terracotta. Prompting images of bare feet on beaches and hands plunged into the earth, these colours are about connection to the elements, warm neutrals that are livelier and more varied than a classic beige. Top Pick: Pochette armchair by B&B Italia B&B Italia’s Pochette by Piero Lissoni combines unfixed cushions and a low-slung shape with a creamy grey-ish nude leather which is wrapped around the tubular frame, a shade easier to live with and more laid back than white or ivory but with a similar crisp, chic impression.

Sea Shades

IN-BETWEEN DINING TABLE BY LEMA Summoning visions of the ocean disappearing into the horizon, Mediterranean mornings and treasure-like pieces of sea glass, this season’s statement hues are gloriously fresh and enlivening, radiating the promise of sunnier climes and (like us all) calling out for adventure. Hovering between hazy shades of blue-tinged sage and turquoise tones, these are introverted colours which harmonise easily with their surroundings, tranquil and inobtrusive while radiating vitality and joy. Top Pick: Leggera chair by Cassina Gio Ponti’s 1952-designed icon the Leggera embraces neutral shades as well as a vibrant watery palette for its move into the outdoors. The renowned seat’s original slimline frame is replicated in garden-proof stainless steel, the colourful option a peppy turquoise-tinted green with optional upholstery in blue recycled polypropylene, the makings of a spirited summery classic.

LEGGERA CHAIR BY CASSINA

Adding an element of surprise and delight to the dining room, each artful base feels like a discovery, something earned and a small secret waiting to be uncovered. Top Pick: In-Between dining table by Lema In-Between by Ximi Li asks the diner to focus on the space between the base’s forms and consider instead the chunky segments of air formed by the irregular legs. Arranged in a staggered position, the flattened supports stand apart, almost meeting in the middle, the rounded marble top drawing them together and making the decorative piece whole. We look forward to welcoming these fresh Milanese launches – and more! – to our curated collection of designer furniture, lighting and accessories both online and at our 25’000 sq ft luxury lifestyle showroom in Greater London over the coming months.

Sculptural Bases

These days, tables are all about looking down. The contemporary table is leaning heavily on leg work, its supports pieces of art in their own right able to sit in the home as standalone sculptural objects.

ooden floors look stunning in the home. But they are not the easiest to maintain and can be quite expensive to install. A new floor tile collection from independent tile specialists Porcelain Superstore has the same great looks of a wooden floor but none of the drawbacks. The Bowland range, which is available in three finishes – Walnut, Oak and Grey – is a practical porcelain tile that has the same characteristics as a wooden board. A triple threat, these tiles combine classic styling with super durability and a budget-friendly price tag to offer a statement alternative to traditional wooden floors. Tiles can be laid straight for a sleek finish or in a parquet style for those who favour something a little more traditional. Abbas Youssefi, Director of Porcelain 7 8 J U LY 2 0 2 2

Superstore, said: “Bowland is a really stunning versatile tile that allows homeowners to enjoy the aesthetics of gorgeous wooden flooring without any of the worries about maintenance and upkeep. “And because these tiles can be used throughout the entire home, you can continue the look into more humid spaces where wooden flooring is a big no no.”

About Porcelain Superstore

Independent and family-run, the brothers behind Porcelain Superstore might have been brought up in the tile industry, but they aren’t afraid of shaking it up. Passionate about porcelain, they scour Europe and beyond for their curated collections, which are handpicked from only the most respected tile factories. Only the best-looking and top-quality tiles make it to their warehouse where bright, vibrant geometrics sit alongside more traditional large format tiles to offer customers the widest choice of quality porcelain tiles. Throw in exceptional customer service and five-year guarantees on all tiles and it’s easy to see why Porcelain Superstore are not afraid of breaking the mould. porcelainsuperstore.co.uk

GETTING THE LIGHT RIGHT IN YOUR BATHROOM

G

ood lighting can make all the difference in a bathroom space but is quite often an overlooked part of bathroom design. Here, we ask Faye, Senior Designer at Ripples Bournemouth for her advice on getting the light right in your bathroom.

1.What are the key things to consider when planning bathroom lighting?

The key things to consider when it comes to bathroom lights are: the style and size of the fittings, how your lighting will be controlled THE DETAILS (be it a switch, sensor Visit Ripples Bournemouth or even an app on your at 34-36 Seamoor Road, phone) and the various Westbourne, Bournemouth BH4 layers of lighting which 9AS, ripplesbathrooms.com or you might like to include call 01202 766886. (from task lighting through to atmospheric lighting). If you take time to think about who will use the bathroom and how, you’ll be able to consider the various mixture of lighting options that will suit your requirements.

2.What would you say is the perfect mix of lighting for a bathroom?

I usually suggest a mixture of task lighting, atmospheric 9 0 J U LY 2 0 2 2

lighting and decorative lighting to make sure your bathroom is equipped to suit a range of purposes and moods. Task lighting is great for applying makeup or shaving on dark winter mornings, as well as ensuring your bathroom is lit enough to be thoroughly cleaned. Contrastingly, atmospheric lighting helps create a sense of calm in the evening time and helps prepare the body for sleep. Decorative lighting offers a chance to choose something beautiful which you love, adding a sense of personality to your space.

3.Where should you start when planning bathroom lighting?

A good place to start is to assess the amount of natural light available in your bathroom. Then, once the design process is underway, your bathroom designer can help suggest additional lighting options which will further enhance the room and create the atmosphere you’re hoping to achieve. At Ripples, we usually start with the task lighting as this often sits above your sanitaryware and helps to bounce light around the rest of the room. We then look to layer additional lighting sources, depending on the style and feeling the client wants to create.

HOW TO TURN YOUR GARDEN INTO A

magine the setting – a cornucopia of tropical planting shadowing a hidden oasis of calm, replete with hot tub, comfortable loungers, subtle lanterns and tea lights dotted around, and the scent of jasmine in the air. This might seem like an unrealistic aspiration of how to create the perfect garden sanctuary, especially if you have a small space. But if you’re able to include just a few of these features in your outdoor space – which all star in Chelsea garden designer Kate Gould’s ‘Out Of The Shadows’ sanctuary garden this year – you could be on the road to zen. Gould’s creation is a lesson in how post-pandemic gardens are

being asked to work harder for us than ever. Not only to grow plants but to provide an outdoor extension to our homes, where we can relax, exercise, entertain and eat. “The RHS has a category called Sanctuary Gardens and it’s my interpretation of what coming out of Covid was, in terms of clients making their gardens safe, usable and able to exercise in and gather in small numbers,” says Gould. The garden features a state-of-the-art jacuzzi swim spa, spaces for seating and relaxation, climbing bars, and a yoga/meditation space all elegantly situated among dramatic and exotic, tropical-style planting.

HOME & GARDEN

Here, Gould offers a few pointers on how to create your own garden sanctuary…

Plants are key

“My idea of sanctuary would be digging a big hole and gardening. If you are talking about creating a spa feeling, it’s more than anything about the plants,” she says. “If you want to use a spa all year, a lot of the plants will have to be evergreen, which either leads you down a supermarket car park look, which you don’t want, or a more tropical look using palms, ferns, leafy perennials, or other plants which will give you that lush green look.” Gould’s Chelsea garden features palm trees, bamboo, false pepper trees and ferns. White or blue flowers will pop out in the sunnier aspect at the front, but the whole effect is a subtle, muted palette.

Create a canopy

If you have a tree fern, you could be nestled under a canopy to make the area feel really private.

Use subtle lighting

“You can light the canopy beautifully, because all those plants light beautifully at night. Really simple uplighters are very effective at lighting trees and don’t necessarily cost the earth. You also don’t have to see them,” says Gould. “Then you have decorative lights like standard lamps and lanterns, floor-mounted objects which look amazing and you can just layer it up. The only thing you really want is to make sure, if you are using electrics, is that somebody qualified installs it for you.”

Consider an outdoor shower

On hot, balmy summer days or nights, an open-air shower might be just the ticket – but get a professional to install it for you. Create privacy by sheltering it with plants, Gould suggests.

Give yourself space to stretch

“In the Chelsea garden I’ve designed, there’s space to do some yoga to relax or meditate, even though the space is only 10m by 10m. We have a very light gravel area and you’d have a dense yoga mat on top of it. It’s surrounded by bamboo and tree ferns and acers so it feels very quiet.”

Make cosy seating areas

“This has changed over the years. If you have a large area and can really customise it, you could make it long and low and really comfortable with cushions. But remember you will have to put the 9 8 J U LY 2 0 2 2

cushions away in the winter,” says Gould. “Otherwise, there are many other lovely furniture options to choose from. Modular sofas can be assembled in the configuration you want [and many] come with waterproof covers. “Spas tend to want to be relaxing, so if you choose colours which uplift you, such as reds and yellows, you’d probably avoid those. Go with gentle blues, greys and greens because that will also reflect the planting.”

What about water?

With Covid, more people are investing in their gardens, which means they might put in a swim spa – a large jacuzzi with a current in it which you can swim against – says Gould, whose Chelsea garden will be incorporating one of these. “The spa becomes not only something you can sit in for relaxation, but you can exercise in it,” she notes. “Water’s like Marmite – you either love it or hate it. If you have a spa, you can get in it and sit there in the bubbles, and maybe drink bubbles when you’re in it. Alternatively, a still pool of water can reflect. “But you could equally have a sculpture or a firepit, which is less to maintain and might aesthetically fit the garden and doesn’t necessarily need the upkeep that a water feature would.”

Scent-sational plants

“The best one for this is Chinese jasmine (trachelospermum), which has lovely glossy evergreen foliage which flowers in the winter. You could also have Christmas box. If you have lots of pots and a bit of sunshine, you could plant pittosporum, which smells like holidays,” says Gould. “You probably wouldn’t want to mix your messages, so if you are going down a leafy, tropical theme, you are not going to want to put lavender in.”
