SUPPORTED BY BOSS. GALLERY 40, 22 JUNE 2024 – 6 APRIL 2025 20 APRIL 2024 OUT & ABOUT
NAOMI: IN FASHION

The V&A presents its upcoming exhibition NAOMI: In Fashion, which will explore the unequalled 40-year career of fashion model and cultural icon Naomi Campbell.

A trailblazer in the field, her celebrated ability to ‘walk’ the catwalk, along with the special alchemy she creates through collaborations with every major fashion house, fashion publication and leading fashion photographers, ensure that after four decades in the fashion industry, Campbell continues to star in catwalk shows, advertising campaigns and editorial fashion shoots around the world.

Produced in collaboration with Campbell and foregrounding her voice and perspective, NAOMI: In Fashion will be the first exhibition of its kind. The exhibition will draw upon Campbell’s own extensive wardrobe of haute couture and ready-to-wear ensembles from key moments in her career along with loans from designer archives and objects from the V&A’s collections. The exhibition opens with high-impact clips of Campbell on the catwalk, illustrating her legendary ‘walk’, setting the scene for the supermodel’s unparallelled 40-year career.

Highlights will include a dramatic 1989 Thierry Mugler car-inspired corset, a pink Valentino ensemble worn at the 2019 Met Gala and a pair of staggeringly high Vivienne Westwood platform shoes worn by Campbell during her famous 1993 catwalk fall. The exhibition will include around 100 looks and accessories from the best of global high fashion chronicling her 40 years in the industry.

Visitors will encounter designs by Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gianni and Donatella Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier,

John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino, Vivienne Westwood, Yves Saint Laurent and many others. In addition, fashion photography features prominently. Striking imagery by leading photographers such as Campbell Addy, Nick Knight, Peter Lindbergh and Steven Meisel, will form a selection curated by Edward Enninful OBE.

The exhibition will also recognise Campbell’s mentors including prominent public figures such as Nelson Mandela, who inspired her to use her platform for social change. Campbell has advocated for equity from an early age, joining the Black Girls Coalition in 1989 and fronting the 2007 ‘black issue’ of Vogue

Italia. Along with Bethann Hardison and Iman, she has also campaigned for The Diversity Coalition since 2013 to champion diversity on the catwalk.

Becoming Naomi then goes back to Campbell’s childhood. Born in 1970, southLondoner Campbell aspired to a career on stage and performed in 1980s music videos for artists including Bob Marley and Culture Club. Her life changed when, aged 15, she was approached by model agent Beth Boldt while out shopping with schoolfriends; two years later she would be on the front cover of Vogue and walking for acclaimed designers in London, Paris, Milan and New York.

Examples of Campbell’s earliest covers will also be shown, including her Vogue Paris, Patrick Demarchelier cover from August 1988 – she was the first Black model to cover the magazine.

By the early 1990s, the term ‘Supermodel’, or model turned international celebrity, was widely used directly in reference to Naomi and a small group of peers. Fashion had become mass entertainment and Campbell, though still in her teens, was at the centre of this excitement.

Campbell unwittingly created fashion history in 1993 when, smiling, she fell to the runway floor while wearing Westwood’s staggeringly high blue platforms. The original pair, with the

written inside, were quickly acquired by the V&A.

Aged 17 Campbell moved to New York and threw herself into the city’s buzzing, social, fashion scene, forging enduring friendships with designers and others in the industry. Since the early 1990s Campbell has been one of the most high-profile models in the world – and one of the most recognisable black women. The Spotlight will explore a highly publicised moment, when Campbell served a period of court ordered community service. On display is the Dolce & Gabbana gown that Campbell wore on her final day – a look she wore in response to the paparazzi capturing her arrival and departure every day throughout.

Next it will look at Naomi Campbell as an exemplar in the field, and her early collaborations with many fashion houses - connections evolving into decades-long collaborative friendships.

“Produced in collaboration with Campbell and foregrounding her voice and perspective, NAOMI: In Fashion will be the first exhibition of its kind”

With over forty years of experience working with the leading names in fashion, Campbell is an archetype, whose skill and reputation as an exceptional model is indisputable.

IN THE REALM OF CONTEMPORARY ART, FEW ARTISTS MANAGE TO CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF EMOTION AND MECHANICAL BRILLIANCE QUITE LIKE ALASTAIR GIBSON

His latest series, Engineered Emotion, is now available for viewing and purchase at myarto.co.uk. It’s a testament to the unique melding of art and engineering. The series comprises three remarkable pieces: Heart of Passion, Heart of Gold, and Brave Heart – each embodying a distinct emotional and conceptual theme, manifested through intricate design and profound craftsmanship. Heart of Passion is a visual symphony of fervour and intensity. Gibson’s use of vibrant red and dynamic forms in this piece encapsulates the raw energy and zeal of passion. It’s a celebration of the spirit that drives innovation and creativity; a theme that resonates deeply in Gibson’s own journey as an artist-engineer. Conversely, Heart of Gold exudes a serene, almost ethereal quality. The opulent gold colour evokes a sense of peace and benevolence. This piece can be seen to represent the purity and intrinsic value of a compassionate heart, reflecting a more introspective and tender aspect of human emotion. The third piece, Brave Heart, is a powerful embodiment of courage and resilience. Through its bold structure and assertive purple lines, Gibson conveys a sense of steadfastness and bravery. It speaks to the indomitable spirit which overcomes challenges and adversity; a fitting tribute to the courage inherent in artistic and technological exploration. Gibson’s background in Formula One engineering is palpably evident in these works. His adeptness

It all began in South East London 85 years ago….and now Marty Wilde the icon comes to Blackheath Halls for one special night

He’s the first artist ever to have pop success over 85 years, and now one of the world’s longest-running musicians to still be touring live at the age of 85 – Marty Wilde is a UK national treasure and a musical icon. Marty will play the Blackheath Halls on 27 April, giving home fans a chance to be with this original rock `n’ roller up close and personal.

“It’s my 85th birthday year and I’m reflecting back on all the wonderful moments of my life with a new single, EP and x21 date tour of the UK,” comments Marty. “But for this one I just had to come back home to where it all started for me, on my home turf of South East London. That’s where my younger self was discovered as a teen, and I couldn’t do a tour without coming back home for me 85th birthday. So I’ll be rockin’ Blackheath Halls on 27 April, it’s gonna be a special one for me. Come join me everyone, share this memorable night with me.”

Marty also releases his new EP as his love letter to the world, touching on poignant moments of love across his 85 years. ‘Two Eyes Streaming’, showcases Marty Wilde’s distinct vocals in the title track, painting the emotion of love from the perspective of a young 5-year-old Marty, who’s missing his dad. Other moments of love

across the EP include ‘Elvis’ – Marty’s heart-felt tribute to the star he desperately misses, and live versions of ‘Danny’, the omitted King Creole track from Elvis and ‘Running Together’, the family song Marty recorded with his daughters Kim & Roxy Wilde and released during lockdown.

From his teen heart-throb chart days of the 50s and 60s, and his song-writing success for the likes of Status Quo, Lulu, Snowpatrol, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones, right through to his pennings for Brit Award winning daughter, Kim Wilde throughout the 80s, and his own chart success as his ‘Dreamboats & Petticoats Presents: The Very Best of Marty Wilde’ shot to No7 in the UK album chart in 2019 – Marty Wilde has proven that he’s a stalwart within the industry. RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW PREVIEW

21 – 25 May 2024

The greatest flower show on earth returns to Royal Hospital Chelsea with stunning garden designs, gorgeous floral displays and exclusive shopping. Over a century old, and RHS Chelsea still delivers new ideas in horticulture – drawing a global crowd and is the ‘haute-couture’ of the international gardening scene.

RHS has revealed the sensational garden line-up for 2024, representing the pinnacle of horticultural excellence with cuttingedge design, inspiration, colour and innovation. Expect to be dazzled!

2024 Show Gardens include:

• St James’s Piccadilly: Imagine the World to be Differentdesigned by Robert Myers, built by Stewart Landscape Construction. Paying homage to the revitalising influence of urban green spaces, the garden symbolises a message of hope and recovery while igniting the imagination of future generations to envision a different world. Upon entering through an archway reminiscent of the proposed gateways leading to the churchyard at St James’s Piccadilly, this tranquil space serves as a sanctuary for urban dwellers and city wildlife.

• WaterAid Garden - designed by Tom Massey & Je Ahn, built by

Landscape Associates. The garden explores the challenges presented by an ever-changing climate. It focuses on sustainable water management and features a colourful array of plant species designed to deal with varying amounts of rainfall. The structure harvests every drop of rainfall, filtering and storing this precious resource for drinking and irrigating while also slowing flow and providing shade.

• The National Autistic Society Garden - designed by Sophie Parmenter & Dido Milne, built by Landform Consultants. The Garden aims to capture an

autistic person’s everyday experience of the world, using walls of cork to create spaces dedicated to different types of social interaction - at work, with friends and family, with partners, and with ourselves - highlighting a strategy called ‘masking’ – a potentially draining process involving consciously or unconsciously hiding autistic characteristics in order to fit in.

Sanctuary Gardens include:

• The Boodles Garden - designed by Catherine MacDonald, built by Gadd Brothers Trees & Landscapers. The Boodles Garden is a

celebration of the 200th anniversary of the National Gallery. Taking inspiration from paintings at the gallery, it evokes the spirit of many significant artworks. Subtle links to prominent paintings at the gallery will pervade the garden’s design and planting, providing visitors a visual treat where nature represents art, and vice versa.

• The Freedom from Torture Garden: A Sanctuary for Survivors - designed by John Warland & Emma O’Connell, built by Living Landscapes. A place of sanctuary, peace and hope where horticultural therapy calms, heals and restores survivors of torture on their journey to recovery. The garden is designed to be a curvaceous and immersive space, where visitors can engage in therapy one-toone, with family, or in a group. The communal bread oven brings survivors together to share stories and build new friendships.

The Great Pavilion

THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF PORTRAIT PAINTERS ANNUAL EXHIBITION

19TH - 18TH MAY 2024, MALL GALLERIES, THE MALL, SW1

If you are interested in the painted portrait, there is one annual portrait painting exhibition which is a must visit.

The Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ Annual Exhibition is now in its 133rd year, held at the prestigious Mall Galleries - home to the Federation of British Artists, a visual arts charity supporting artists since 1961.

The prestigious exhibition is unique in that its collection of painted and drawn portraits, from a national and international submission, is selected not by the art establishment, by celebrities or media moguls, but by world-renowned professional portrait painters.

With peer-reviewed paintings chosen through the discerning eye and instinctive sensitivity of other artists, the exhibition arguably showcases the very best painted portraits in Europe – both by established portraiture artists and by the most exciting up-andcoming talent. It is one of the world’s greatest forums for portraiture featuring a broad collection of stylistic and intellectual approaches.

With much of the work shown available for sale, and with exhibiting portrait painters available for commission through the society’s Portrait Commission service, the show also presents an opportunity to buy portrait masterpieces of the future.

The exhibition features around 230 beautiful painted portraits which have been expertly curated by artist members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (RP). The Society looks to uphold the values and practices of its long and distinguished history, but at the same time, it seeks to explore and develop new artistic models and perspectives. Selection for the RP’s Annual Exhibition is

highly prized (exhibiting artists are in the running for awards worth £40,000,) with artists submitting portraits from across the world.

Visitors can buy many of the portraits on display, but more interestingly, can commission their own, with the show providing a showcase of both established RP members and Europe’s most exciting and up-and-coming portraiture artists, giving visitors a unique overview of a broad range of styles and interpretations.

The Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ 133rd Annual Exhibition Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1. £5, Free for Friends of Mall Galleries and under 25s. Concessions available. For more details and to view the exhibition online, visit mallgalleries.org.uk where work can also be purchased

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

The finest independent schools in the UK

IMAGE: QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COLLEGIATE

Head of Queen Ethelburga’s College (QE), Steven Turner, explains how his school teaches its students invaluable life skills to use in school exams, further education and throughout their careers.

Preparing Students for Successful Futures with Study Skills Initiative

QE College is a place for highly aspirational, intellectual, and curious students to focus on academic study whilst being stretched and challenged to reach their full potential. The College offers an academic pathway programme beyond the curriculum to set students apart from their peers in the university market with additional lectures, national competitions, opportunities for student leadership, and over 100 weekly enrichment activities.

“In 2022, we introduced the Whole School Revision Project, which has enabled our students to develop vital life skills, including mental agility, resilience, teamwork, collaboration, and effective study habits. The project takes a research-led approach to developing

the most efficient revision techniques for our students, so they are better prepared to retain knowledge, apply critical thinking skills, and excel in examinations not just in the immediate future but throughout their life.

*By revolutionising our students’ approach to revision with impactful methods such as Cornell notes, flashcards, and blank page retrieval, we have been able to empower them to become future-ready, independent individuals. In addition, the project developed leadership skills among 27 students who acted as Ambassadors for the project.”

“The impact of this initiative is evident through student feedback, with 43% of students expressing increased focus and dedication to their revision. Furthermore, the success can be seen through our academic performance, with QE College ranking 2nd nationally for A Level performance in the Sunday Times Parent Power 2023.”

“On the back of the success, we expanded this initiative in 2023 to include study skills. The new QE Study Toolkit programme covers all the initial revision training but also helps students with the skills needed for coursework and portfolio work, focusing on key future-ready skills including time management, organisation, understanding your motivators, tackling procrastination and creating effective study routines.”

Nestled in 220 acres of countryside between Harrogate and York, QE College is a co-educational day and boarding school for students in Years 10-13.

EDUCATION

Don’t forget about what ‘Prep’ education

is

really about…

There are so many threats to ‘Prep’ education at the moment and much has been written about the primary impacts of these. It is, however, the secondary order impact that worries me most on behalf of our children and their parents who are investing so much in private education.

“At Eagle House we aim to offer the very best of education in the crucial two years that are Years 7 and 8”

The increasing market pressures have resulted in independent senior schools adjusting their models to start at Year 7 (when pupils are 11). This, in turn, has meant that many prep schools (and especially in London) are being forced to finish at the end of Year 6. So, prep school fees are going towards 11+ preparation (which is, of course, better done at school than via tutoring) rather than genuine preparation for the social, pastoral and academic challenges that lie ahead in the teenage years and beyond. By transferring Years 7 and 8 to senior schools, we are missing the opportunity to prepare our pupils to make the most of and to flourish in these senior schools. This has always been the key secret of a quality Prep education.

Ironically, as pressures increase on teenagers it is now that this preparation is properly needed. A 13 year-old who truly knows who they are as a person will be more able to cope with the peer pressure of social comparison that comes at senior school. They will also fully understand the importance of intrinsic motivation from an academic point of view and will enjoy their learning more as a result.

At Eagle House (the prep school owned by, and next to, Wellington College) we aim to offer the very best of education in the crucial two years that are Years 7 and 8. The benefits of spending these years in a Prep school are imparted in a passive way, simply by being the leaders in the school and not being ‘socially squashed’ by older pupils. But, in modern prep schools, they are also imparted

actively via immersive pastoral care, via reflective work with tutors and via coaching. New pupils joining (with flexi-boarding options) add social competition in Years 7 and 8 but small set sizes allow that competition to be truly preparatory rather than ‘sink or swim’ in nature. So, as the market changes, let’s be careful not to forget what makes Prep schools so special and so genuinely important.

ROSEMEAD PREPARATORY SCHOOL & NURSERY Celebrates Glowing ISI Inspection

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, is delighted to announce the findings of its latest inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The inspection, which was carried out in November 2023, praised Rosemead’s academic approach to learning, pastoral care and support and the positive influence of the school’s values, vision, and leadership.

“A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,” the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.”

Speaking about the report, Head of Rosemead, Graeme McCafferty explained: “I am absolutely thrilled to share our

outstanding recent inspection report with our community. One standout strength that truly shines through is our highly customised approach to every child’s academic progress. The report highlighted our dedication to tailoring personal learning programs for each child, particularly in subjects like Maths, English, VR, and NVR.”

Graeme added: “What’s more, our extensive learning support programme ensures that every individual in our school community not only succeeds but thrives. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to providing the best possible education for every child at Rosemead, and I couldn’t be prouder of our school’s achievement.”

Rosemead’s early years’ provision was also praised in the summary findings. ‘Leaders in the early years effectively ensure staff have high expectations of the behaviour and achievement of

children,’ the report found. ‘The positive relationships between adults and children in the early years help children settle in quickly and feel safe and happy.’

It added: ‘Children in the early years achieve well from their varied starting points. Adults engage with the children effectively and use appropriate questioning to develop children’s vocabulary and understanding. Children from an early age become confident speakers and develop their reading skills well.

The report comes at an exciting time for Rosemead. Last year, the school announced a merger with St Dunstan’s College joining St Dunstan’s Community of Schools.

St Dunstan’s Group Head, Nick Hewlett, said: “The whole community is delighted with the ISI inspection for Rosemead. The report rightly recognises the outstanding education Rosemead is offering as one of south London’s leading prep schools. Bringing our schools together has been a wonderful opportunity, allowing our staff and students to work closer together, learning from one another and enhancing our students’ educational journeys. I pay tribute to the staff, children and parents who are part of this onward journey, and I am very excited by Rosemead’s future.”

Noting the recent merger, the report highlighted: ‘Governors and senior leaders work well together to promote the effectiveness of the school. Governors’ vision has a positive influence on every area of the school and drives continual improvement, for example, the recent decision to merge with another school.’

Alongside the academic excellence, the report praised the ‘positive’ Roots of Rosemead, which are the school’s values

system. ‘The curriculum and communication of school values, known as the ‘Roots of Rosemead’ encourage respect and strengthen pupils’ appreciation of the diversity of the school and wider community. ‘The consistent promotion of these values helps develop pupils’ moral understanding.’

The full inspection report can be found on Rosemead’s website, and the school will be hosting their next open morning on Thursday 25 April 2024.

NATURAL INTELLIGENCE (NI)

Welcome to Clayesmore, where we don’t just think outside the box - we’ve thrown the box into a catapult and launched it into the stratosphere!

In a world hurtling toward the future faster than Elon Musk’s latest rocket, it’s clear that the old “read, regurgitate, repeat” method of education just won’t cut it anymore. Sure, acing exams is great, but let’s face it: the workplace of tomorrow demands more than just memory.

in approval.

“We want our students to fearlessly navigate the challenges they face, confident in the support their school offers them and the skills it is giving them. Every experience is another opportunity to learn and grow.”

“Clayesmore help their students become the people they want to be, and the people you’d actually want to work with”

That’s where LEX comes in. No, it’s not a new lexicon for deciphering ancient languages (though that would be pretty cool). LEX is Clayesmore’s secret sauce, a concoction of “more than extra”-curricular activities designed to turbocharge our students into the movers and shakers of the 21st century.

Think of it as Hogwarts meets Silicon Valley, with a dash of Bear Grylls thrown in for good measure. One day, you could be dissecting crime scenes like a junior Sherlock Holmes; the next, you’re scaling cliffs on the Jurassic Coast faster than a velociraptor evading extinction.

And it’s not just about adrenalinefuelled escapades. Clayesmore help their students become the people they want to be, and the people you’d actually want to work with. They’re talking about initiative, adaptability, and the kind of sound judgement that would make Solomon nod

Clayesmore is interested in helping students flourish - at school and for the rest of their life. They seek to ensure they develop the skills and confidence not only in academic subjects but in all the things that matter much more in the world of real life!

So whether it’s laying railway tracks for a local community project or honing your interview skills with actual business bigwigs, LEX is your ticket to becoming the Renaissance person of the 21st century.

OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND AT BALLARD

With excellent GCSE results and outstanding opportunities, there has never been a better time to join Ballard School.

Talented teachers have helped pupils to produce some incredible results over the last few years, better than some of our local academically selective schools and almost double the national average for the highest grades of 9 to 7 this year. On average, every pupil gained nearly a grade higher (+0.85) across all their GCSEs than their indicator grades; all passed Higher Maths and English Language.

With many schools returning to a more uniform approach to try and improve behaviour and results, Ballard continues to invest in their successful tailored holistic approach. By blending exceptional and plentiful co-curricular opportunities with a strong ethos of kindness, inclusivity and positivity; Ballard underpins their academic excellence. Educational research supports Ballard’s belief that ‘busy happy children do well in the classroom.’

Their outstanding education not only provides strong GCSE results but also wellrounded individuals who go

on to succeed in many avenues of life. The character skills Ballard builds in their pupils are essential to these successes. The perfect balance and blend of a creative, digital and traditional education ensures that Ballard pupils have all the academic skills they require too.

“Educational research supports Ballard’s belief that ‘busy happy children do well in the classroom’.”

With an abundance of trips, Ballard pupils continue to learn and build skills in and out of the classroom. In the Spring Term alone, from Year 1 to Year 11, their pupils have enjoyed 28 trips. Some highlights include: for those who love STEM, Years 1&2 and Years 5 visited Winchester Science Museum for a day of exploration; senior Scholars travelled to London for ‘Maths in Action’, a series of lectures and workshops before success at the Southampton ‘Maths Feast Competition’.

52 APRIL 2024 EDUCATION

The DT Scholars also did incredibly well at their Rotary competition and Scholars loved their Science Week workshops with the whole of Year 10 spending a day exploring the world of Science too.

Ballard’s aspiring writers attended a creative writing workshop, inspired by two authors visiting the School during the weeklong celebration of World Book Day. Year 10 historians visited Whitechapel and Year 9 travelled to Ypres for a poignant Battlefields tour. Pupils in Years 6 to 8 debated important topics at a ‘Mini United Nations’ event, acting as Brazilian delegates to try to bring a positive resolution to international issues such as climate change. All of the pupils taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards completed their practice expeditions.

Ballard pupils have performed at the O2 at ‘Young Voices‘; attended performances of ‘Blood Brothers’ and ‘Guys and Dolls’; and danced on stage at the Bournemouth Pavilion Dance in ‘Origins’, a youth dance platform. Years 7 to 11 also created a spectacular production of ‘Footloose’.

The Sports department at Ballard took a number of pupils to compete in the National Cross Country finals, as well as the South West Hockey finals (U14 boys). Sports Scholars visited Southampton FC’s training ground and Year 8 had a chance to visit Bath to watch some top class sport. Years 9 & 10 travelled to Italy for a ski trip with the opportunity for those who were beginners to visit a dry ski slope beforehand. This is even before Ballard’s busy Summer term with its dedicated trips week! Trips, both local and abroad, are built around learning above and beyond the curriculum, as well as having huge amounts of fun, building bonds and

forging memories.

At Ballard, you don’t have to travel out of school to experience amazing things. They also invite inspiring individuals into school including Olympians, actors, authors and genocide survivors. These visits encourage debate and teach important life lessons, including tolerance, hard work and perseverance. With four alumni travelling to the Paris Olympics this summer, Ballard looks forward to more exciting tales to be shared.

So if you want more than just an education for your child, visit Ballard to find out why parents call them ‘simply the best school every day.’

Bavaria Yachts – Power & Sail

Bavaria Yachts have been selling high-quality yachts with a flare for design and a focus on the owner’s onboard experience since 1978. Their multi-award-winning range of motorboats have been in production since the turn of the century, with the continued pursuit of marine innovation at the forefront of every design.

The models range from the sophisticated Greenline 39 to the incredible Greenline 58 Fly. With each model comes a bank of solar panels fitted as standard which allows owners to run appliances without having the noise or

emissions to fire up the generator, whilst the hybrid engine can be changed from diesel to electric at the flick of a switch.

Bali Catamarans

For unparalleled levels of comfort and a unique approach to ensuring time on the water is spent well, look no further than Bali Catamarans. The tilting ‘Bali Door’ allows for owners to enjoy their surroundings by optimising their indoor-outdoor living experience; whilst the solid foredeck maximises space onboard, giving owners even more areas to soak up the sun. Their models range from the new 38-foot Bali Catsmart which pushes the realms of possibility for what a smaller catamaran could look, feel and perform like and they have just announced the release of the Bali 5.8 which will premiere later this year.

Regal Boats

Regal Boats – where family business meets family boating. Regal Boats are the sportiest of our brands, with sleek lines that cut effortlessly through the water and incredible performances to match. TOP SPRING TRENDS

From fabulous florals to marvellous metallics, this is how to style the runway looks, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When we flick through fashion shows, it’s with great excitement and anticipation… moreover, how these costume dramas will be reimagined into wearable, must-have items that we can’t wait to slip into.

And with firm favourites enjoying a bijou update and sexy separates coming into play, here’s what we’re looking forward to wearing when these key looks land in-store…

SHORT SHORTS

The warmer months are all about baring more, and for the spring/summer season, the mini has been pushed aside in favour of the micro short. That’s right, it’s time to get your pins out. From Paris to Milan, models strutted down the catwalk in the shortest of shorts. Nina Ricci perfected the look with fishnet tights, setting the tone for sexy but sophisticated; while Max Mara paired them with silk shirts, oversized canvas jackets and strappy heels. Either way, stylish neutrals, snakeskin prints and clean tailoring signals spring chic.

86 APRIL 2024
FASHION & BEAUTY

HIGH WAISTED

Sure to be a big hit, high-waisted trousers are universally flattering, and if you’re after a few more inches, they lengthen the leg. The key is to choose the highest style that’s right for you. As seen at Aadnevik, Rokh, Ralph Lauren and Emporio Armani, wear with a cropped top, tailored jacket – or, as a twist on an old favourite, a bandeau top with bare midriff to show off your waist.

WHITE DRESS

If there’s one thing we love, it’s the wanderlust, dreamy vibe that puts us in a sunny mood when we don a white maxi dress. Designers including Michael Kors, Stella McCartney, Valentino and Susan Fang embraced the allure of broderie anglaise and ruffles for a breezy, fresh take on fashion’s most romantic silhouette. Add a casual edge to your diaphanous dress by wearing it with T-bar flat sandals, or white platform trainers.

CRAFT

Bridging the gap between boho and artisan, the craft trend channels crochet, fringes, tassels and embellishment… in a word, craftwork. As seen at Bottega Veneta, with giant pom poms adorning crochet dresses; laser-cut florals at Valentino, and twisted strands and fancified fringing at Asai. By the time the high street embraces these eclectic creations, you can look forward to toned down, tactile pieces with movement – and a good measure of artfully placed decor.

FLORALS

of seasons. Alexander McQueen, Schiaparelli, Courrèges and Roksanda – to name a few – are still showing the love to lamé and metallics… and so are we.

Flower power and plush posies were speaking volumes on the runway with petal prints, petal-shaped curves and all matter of flora flourishing in the new collections. Highlights included Burberry, Paul Costelloe and Rodarte. The latter, in their ready-to-wear collection, teamed a silk, floral-patterned, bias-cut slip dress with a floor-length, pink silk cape… stunning. Whether you go dress and cape combo – perfect for glamorous garden parties – or fancy florals with a focus on feeling feminine, it’s a perennial staple.

TRANSPARENT SKIRT

There are lots of ways to make this new addition to your wardrobe work for you. Whereas models at Erdem, Jayne Pierson and Louis Vuitton waltzed down the runway with their undies on show, it’s possible to tweak this sheer skirt trend with bigger briefs – aka high-waisted hot pants; or footless opaque tights. But if you do dare to bare, think co-ordinating knickers in the same colour, with lace trims, embellishments or showy sequins… designed to be seen.

METALLICS

Be it a slither of silver, or full-on crystals, this is your summer to shine… But just in case you’re having a feeling of déjà vu, silver sirens have been shimmering down the runway for the past couple

Furthermore, whereas some looks encourage you to play it safe with accessories, more is more with metallics. Which is great news if you fancy a pair of eye-catching silver kitten heels – the shoe for S/S24 – to rock with your silver trousers. Or, a slick silver handbag to team with a dazzling silver dress when you’re going out out. Either way, silver is the standout performer on our wish list.

DOPAMINE DECOR

Go wild. Release yourself. It’s the time. Dopamine décor has arrived and – as the name suggests – it’s zooming in on using the home to boost the mood. Think of it as one step further from viewing the home as a sanctuary. The home has become a playground.

“There’s adventurous colour, there’s tempting texture, there’s alluring lighting, there’s unusual shape, but most of all there’s variation”

At its core, dopamine decor is inspired by dopamine, the ‘feel-good’ chemical responsible for pleasure and reward. Integrating its influence into interiors taps into human psychology, and has led to the current boom in interiors created to amplify happiness.

So what does dopamine décor actually look like? There’s adventurous colour, there’s tempting texture, there’s alluring lighting, there’s unusual shape, but most of all there’s variation. What makes us happy is

so innately personal, that no two dopaminedosed rooms will ever look the same. It could be a space full of mismatching furniture, a single powerful statement piece amongst the calm, an unpredicted combination of colours, texture where before there was smooth, moments of design that ignite surprise or a proudly showcased personal collection of objects. It’s design meeting emotion in the most playful and unrestricted way.

Liberation from limitation

Juxtaposition and contrast are key. ‘Clashing’? Throw that word out of the window and embrace eclecticism. Sure, not everything that brings you visual bliss coordinates with each other, but so what?

The point is it’s beautiful to you, and it’s your home after all – forget about how the rule book says it should look and hone in on how you feel, not how you think you’re meant to feel. Get that dopamine going, decorate with abandon and design a space that’s all the more unique, vibrant and authentic for it.

Identify items that evoke a burst of positivity when you see them. Treat these as the centre of your space, and build up around them, working them into an existing set up – there’s no need to completely redecorate, using a single or few pieces of furniture, lighting, rugs or accessories can be just as cheerful and effective as creating a whole new look.

HOME & GARDEN

You do you

The essence of the dopamine decor trend lies in selecting furniture and accents that genuinely bring you joy and reflect you as a person, so each object or aesthetic is imbued with meaning as well as beauty. Spaces should deeply resonate with you, prompting a surge of pleasure, contentment or sheer delight and moving past the way they look on a surface level to forge a connection with the sentiments. Rooms set ups can take inspiration from childhood, objects, art, a treasured collection, fashion, travel or a memory – dig deep into yourself.

Level up the joy factor

on the up, with kaleidoscopic spaces filled with vivid, often contrasting colours filling homes with optimism and good vibes. An easy way to get involved? Choose objects individually rather than trying to make sure they all ‘work’ together – don’t worry about that – and organically layer shapes, forms, colours, patterns, or materials to grab attention and lift the spirits, or simply go a bit bolder with the colours you’re naturally drawn to.

Beyond Brights

While dopamine’d homes are the antithesis of quiet neutrality, that’s not to say calming, colourless spaces can’t get involved, and if you’re not an every-colour-all-in-one-space type of person, that’s great too. It’s about what brings personal satisfaction. A dash of pigment, texture or interesting material here and there can be just as effective as a space drenched in colours if it rouses your senses. While vibrant, elaborate, high contrast designs often define this style, a minimalist approach can also classify as dopamine decor if it creates a glow of wellbeing and a jolt of joy.

“Nothing is off the table –your personality is centre stage, and the furniture and objects you surround yourself with should bring a smile at every turn”

Nothing is off the table – your personality is centre stage, and the furniture and objects you surround yourself with should bring a smile at every turn. Perhaps they evoke a joy-filled memory, or perhaps they stir up an emotion, or perhaps their sheer beauty gets your heart beating. Dopamine decorating is not about being subtle – now’s the moment to be daring and introduce any objects, colours or themes that ignite passion and awaken the senses. Don’t hesitate – put it on display in its full glory and cheerful splendour.

Bring on the brilliance

For many of us, colour plays a dominant role in decorating for that hit of happiness. From a rainbow explosion in one space to a gentle smattering of calmer shades, either one colour or a combination of many tends to strike a chord with us on a deep level (that sometimes we can’t even explain). As dopamine décor gathers momentum, bright, cheering hues are

The ethos behind the brand is to create bold, mesmerising designs that evoke a warm embrace, captivating attention and adding individuality and a unique aesthetic to any room. The Crane bird logo pays sentimental homage to SarahJane’s time living in Florida, where Cranes and Great Blue Herons were elegant daily visitors to the garden. Sarah-Jane’s most vibrant designs are inspired by her memories of the awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets, the changing hues of the aqua sea and abundant flowers bursting with colour all year round. Whether it’s vivacious, colourful designs or the opulent and timeless rich golds and dramatic black

designs, there is something for all preferences and styles at Liberty James Studio.

Beyond the visual appeal lies a commitment to high quality and longevity. Sarah-Jane takes pride in sourcing premium materials that not only showcase the richness of her designs but also ensure durability. Her wallpapers are made from responsibly sourced resources, using environmentally friendly inks which are resistant to light fading. Generous A3 samples are available on Liberty James Studio’s website; it is highly recommended that samples are purchased prior to ordering full rolls to fully appreciate the true scale and colour of these incredible designs.

Sarah-Jane is currently hard at work on a brand new collection to be released this summer. Building on the success of her existing designs, this upcoming collection promises to bring even more creativity, style and innovation to your walls, making your ‘Walls Less Ordinary’. TRUST BROADVIEW TO CREATE THE WOW FACTOR IN YOUR HOME

As we look ahead to the warmer months, we’ll soon be turning our attention to our gardens and the prospect of spending more time outdoors. Whether that’s simply relaxing or entertaining friends and family, our gardens are a focal point, particularly in the Spring and Summer months. What better way to make the most of your time outdoors, than by creating an outdoor living environment with Broadview thanks to their louvred roof pergola systems and garden awnings.

With one of the largest ranges of outdoor living systems in the South and manufactured by the Belgium based industry leading brand Brustor, every system from Broadview can be custom designed to fit your property. Outdoor pergolas with rotating and retracting roofs operated by remote or app control, along with weatherproof side screens and heaters can effectively create an extra indoor room, outdoors!

Alongside of this, it’s not just the structure alone that Broadview can provide. Their specialist designteam work alongside a wide range of suppliers across the South who offer outdoor kitchens, hot tubs, fire pits and garden landscaping– all of which can help to create a stunning outdoor living environment that can be used all year round. No more leaving guests outside to entertain themselves while you nip back into the kitchen to prepare the next course or organise the next round of drinks, with an outdoor kitchen positioned within your new outdoor structure, you really can make the most of entertaining this year. What’s more, thanks to either sliding glass walls or

integrated screens, the structure can be completely enclosed and with the great addition of heating and lighting, it can be used in all twelve months of the year. As the temperature drops, simply slide the glass shut and you can create a cosy and sheltered area within your garden, protected from the elements. Or, in warmer weather, all you need to do to make the most of the sunshine is open the roof and side screens for the perfect al-fresco space.

As well as their range of pergolas, Broadview also offer fully cassetted retractable awnings that can be installed to your property for added shade. Broadview has an extensive range of awning models to choose from, each with their own features and all can be operated by either Somfy remote control or a manual crank handle. Made with a beautifully crafted aluminium frame of superior quality and a weather-resistant fabric cover, the awnings provide stylish shading for your sunny patio. Available in any RAL colour and with the addition of LEDs and heating, Broadview has the perfect solution for you.

Now is the perfect time to give your outdoor space a makeover. Broadview Shading Solutions, a family run business based in Dorset, are celebrating 55 years in business this year. Their expert team specialise in helping you to create the perfect shading solution for your home, from concept to completion.

MRLANDSCAPES

Embarking on a remarkable career change, Oscar Marsland Roberts stands out as an exception among those who dream of a dramatic shift in their professional lives. Breaking free from the confines of an office in the financial world, Oscar pursued a work experience opportunity with a gardening company, eventually joining full-time. Over five years, he honed his skills in every aspect of the business. In 2017, Oscar founded MRLandscapes, now offering a comprehensive ‘one-stop shop’ for bespoke garden design and landscaping.

Reflecting on the initial focus on hard landscaping, Oscar reminisces about tackling various garden construction tasks, from paving, fencing, and building pergolas to laying lawns, pathways, irrigation, and decking. However, responding to growing demands, the company expanded to incorporate planting designs and

regular after care. Specializing in London front and back gardens, particularly excelling in projects in Chiswick, MRLandscapes works closely with clients throughout the entire process. Building a garden from scratch involves a thorough site survey, detailed drawings, and 3D modelling, with Oscar and their in-house designer personally handling the designs. The team’s collective knowledge and experience ensure the successful completion of landscaping and planting projects of all sizes, promising a friendly, personal service that brings your ideas to life.

Contact MRLandscapes on 020 8087 2334 or info@mrlandscapes.co.uk to turn your garden dreams into reality.
