Richmond Park was originally a deerhunting park and still has 300 red deer and 350 fallow deer. When Charles I moved his court to Richmond Palace (no longer standing) to avoid the plague in London, in 1625, he turned his manor into a deer park with herds of fallow and red deer. The park was enclosed with an 8 mile long brick wall in 1637. Most of the wall that still encloses Richmond park is the original. The Royal deer have been maintained in Richmond ever since.

laridge’s has announced that it will open Claridge’s Bakery with internationally acclaimed chef and baker, Richard Hart, as Executive Baker & Creative Director. Launching with a British-focused menu of beloved classics including Bloomers and Granary Loaves, Jammy Dodger Tarts and Custard Tarts, Belgian Buns, and Iced Fingers, as well as Richard’s globally renowned sourdough breads, the bakery will sell delicious treats and goods straight from the ovens for London locals and visitors to enjoy.

Claridge’s Bakery will be located on Brook’s Mews, Mayfair, behind Claridge’s, with the sole aim of celebrating the art of British baking. Nourishing the neighbourhood with delicacies available throughout the day, the daily and lunch menu will be created by Richard and take inspiration from his London upbringing and love and nostalgia for classic British bakeries, as well as Claridge’s own heritage.

WINTER WALKS RICHMOND PARK One of London’s most breathtaking landscapes and among the best places to enjoy wildlife. The 1,012-hectare space is made up of woodland, grassland and ponds attracting hedgehogs and bats hibernating in winter. But the park is best known for its 630 wild red and fallow deer – so have your camera ready if you want to catch their misty breath on a frosty day. GREENWICH PARK On a crisp winter’s day, there are few better places to be than at the top of Greenwich Park. HOLLAND PARK Located in one of the most desirable areas in London. amble around its formal gardens, loop the woodland in the north of the park then follow the path into Kyoto Garden, a Japanese garden with stone lanterns, a waterfall and carpfilled pond. Look out for herring gull and black-headed gull in winter and squirrels and free-roaming peacocks all year round. The park also has an orangery, tennis courts and a cricket pitch.

HYDE PARK Once the hunting ground for Henry VIII, this large royal park is best known for its famous Speakers’ Corner and Serpentine Lake, home to waterfowl and oarsmen. The Lido only opens for the summer, but the Swimming Club is open all year round so brave folk can swim in frigid waters, sometimes as cold as 4C. For over 150 years, the most dedicated have been getting up early on Christmas morning and swimming in the freezing lake! Hyde Park is also home to the hugely popular Winter Wonderland, open until January 2022.

ew’s much-loved Orchid Festival returns to mark its 30th anniversary with a spectacular display inspired by Chinese heritage and biodiversity. This landmark festival draws inspiration from China’s vast landscapes, rich traditions, and extraordinary plant life - including the country’s many species of orchids.

Over the past three decades, the festival has explored a vivid array of environments, from the rainforests of Costa Rica, the islands of Indonesia and most recently, the flora and fauna of Peru. The Orchid Festival tells exciting stories of Kew’s vital global scientific and conservation partnerships, highlighting projects which are actively supporting and driving action in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss around the world.

Kew’s floral displays seek to connect visitors with the beauty of the natural world and highlight the importance of plant conservation and global collaboration. This year’s focus on China, reflects both the global reach of Kew’s science and the universal power of plants to inspire and connect people across cultures.

China is one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, home to an estimated 10% of the world’s known plant species, and more than 30,000 native plants. There are approximately 1710 known species of orchid in China. The festival focuses predominantly on the Yunnan province, brought to life through large-scale floral installations.

A majestic Chinese dragon formed from lotus seed heads, Orchid plants and dried leaves will wind across the central pond, surrounded by golden bowls overflowing with yellow and orange orchids, inspired by the ancient currency Sycee. Nearby, nine koi carp crafted from Gingko leaves and plant material will swim through a smaller pond, symbolising luck and success.

The journey continues through themed zones: from a bamboo and orchid sculpture to enchanting floral tributes to pandas, red pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, and Red crowned cranes. The symbolism of Chinese New Year is brought to life, with visitors entering via a snakeinspired archway (2025 is the Year of the Snake), passing under lanterns,

arches of good wishes and a moon gate, before exiting via an archway adorned with a horse – a nod to 2026 being the year of the horse.

AN ILLUSTRATION OF LONDON’S HERITAGE London’s famous blue plaques link the people of the past with the buildings of the present.

E

nglish Heritage has run the London blue plaques scheme since 1986, when it had already been in existence for 120 years. Before that it was run by three bodies in succession – the (Royal) Society of Arts, the London County Council and the Greater London Council.

The London blue plaques scheme was started in 1866 and is the oldest of its kind in the world.

The first commemorated the poet Lord Byron at his birthplace, 24 Holles Street, Cavendish Square, in 1867, but this house was demolished in 1889. This makes the plaque to Napoleon III on King Street, Westminster, also erected in 1867, the earliest to survive.

Since then, over 1,000 official blue plaques have been unveiled across London on buildings humble and grand, to honour the notable women and men who have lived or worked in them. They are not always round and blue, but you can spot them by looking for the name of the organisation that erected them.

Tributes to the achievements of politicians, statesmen, philosophers, scientists, war heroes, authors, artists, film stars, sports stars and musicians. Each plaque with an extraordinary tale to tell, representing an important and fascinating slice of history.

Access to health services, education and employment which we are all entitled to today, is the result of the individual achievements and tireless campaigning of countless women throughout history. In the UK, it was often in London where women took the historic first steps into roles previously closed to them.

Blue Plaques for Women Only a minority of London’s blue plaques celebrate women. English Heritage and no doubt every single Londoner don’t think that’s good enough, but the picture is improving. Since 2016, when English first launched their ‘plaques for women’ campaign,

London residents must have been dead for at least 20 years before English Heritage will consider them. For example, singer Amy Winehouse, who died in 2011, will only be eligible for a blue plaque on her Camden home in 2031 at the earliest. Nominees also must have made a big enough national impact in their field to merit the accolade.

2025 PLAQUES

Blue plaques in 2025 celebrated cultural icons whose creative achievements helped shape the capital. These include Marc Bolan, whose glam rock innovation redefined London’s music scene in the 1970s; Audrey Hepburn, whose global fame brought international attention and prestige; and Una Marson, trailblazing Jamaican poet, playwright, broadcaster, and campaigner for racial and gender equality.

The deer have played a major role in the Park’s history and have shaped the landscape too. Their special grassland habitat depends on grazing and the parkland trees have a distinctive ‘browse line’ as the deer eat all the leaves and twigs growing below about 1.5 metres. Deer grazing also prevents tree seedlings from growing, keeping the grassland open. For young trees to survive they need to be protected against damage from deer antlers for some 50 years.

During the autumn the deer ‘rut’ (breeding season) takes place.

The red stags and fallow bucks compete for females (known as hinds and does respectively). At this time, the large males roar, bark and clash antlers in a spectacular way in an attempt to fight off rivals and to attract as many females as possible. The young are born mainly in June, and are hidden by their mothers amongst the bracken and long grass. Females and their young are very vulnerable and sensitive to disturbance at this time Herds of red and fallow deer roam freely within much of the park. The herds are culled in November to keep numbers manageable and the park population healthy.

The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a long heritage. Although many ancient parks were originally maintained for hunting purposes, in recent times it is recognised that the deer herds of the Royal Parks in London are an integral part of the parks’ ecosystem, as well as being a valuable amenity and educational feature. These parkland deer are wild animals, which are not regularly shepherded or handled; they are left to breed normally and to establish normal social behaviour.

INSIDE AARDMAN: Wallace & Gromit and Friends 12 February – 15 November 2026

Y

oung V&A has announced its third exhibition, Inside Aardman: Wallace & Gromit and Friends. Marking Aardman’s 50th anniversary in 2026, it is created primarily for children and families.

The exhibition invites visitors to explore the world of Aardman – creators of Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep, Morph, and more – and unpacks the making of some of the most well known and loved characters of all time.

Opening to coincide with the studio’s 50th anniversary year, Inside Aardman explores the storytelling and craft that brings their familiar and fantastical worlds from the sketchbook to the screen. The exhibition takes visitors behind the scenes of the animation process, from idea development and storyboarding to model making, filming and production, and post-production.

Over 150 items will be on show, including Aardman’s early character sketches, concept art, puppets, character ‘bibles’, props, scripts, set models, as well as several optical illusion toys and early examples of stop-motion animation from the V&A’s collection.

Highlights include development sketches for Morph, early character ideas for Wallace & Gromit, a hand-drawn storyboard from The Wrong Trousers (1993) train chase, as well as never before displayed objects such as the duo’s motorbike and sidecar from Vengeance Most Fowl (2024).

The exhibition features set pieces from Aardman’s incredible body of work, including Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (2024), Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023), Robin Robin (2019) and Wallace & Gromit: A Grand Day Out (1989).

Inside Aardman will give

young visitors the opportunity to try their hand at different parts of stop-motion animation, guiding them on how to make their own at home using everyday materials and inspiration. While journeying through the exhibition, visitors will be able to explore storyboarding, design characters, light sets, create Live Action Videos and watch a selection of animations made by children.

2026 sees Aardman celebrate its 50th anniversary with a roaster of events and celebrations highlighting the craft and legacy of the studio, including the launch of a new movie, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom in the autumn.

We’ve all been there. Ten-tabs deep in-flight options, hotel reviews, and “must-see” lists. Why does organising time away so often feel like a job in itself? We sat down with Carsten Lund, founder of TRIPLA, to hear why he believes travel should feel effortless, and how his own experiences have inspired a different approach.

Q. Carsten, you’ve spent a lifetime travelling. What stands out most from those experiences?

I’ve been lucky to see the world through both a luxury and practical lens, from barefoot escapes on private islands to cultural weekends in Europe, and even multi-generational cruises or villas. And what always stands out is how much detail matters. The transfer that’s waiting without fuss or the restaurant that actually lives up to its promise. It’s these little things that turn a good trip into a truly memorable one.

Q. Many of us know the stress of planning holidays. What do you think makes it so challenging?

Time, mostly. People are busy, and while travel should be restorative, organising it often isn’t. I’ve seen clients arrive exhausted before their holiday even begins because they’ve spent weeks trying to piece it all together online. One family I worked with wanted a milestone birthday in Tuscany. They’d been overwhelmed by villa choices and didn’t know which were genuinely right for them. We stepped in, found a villa with space for grandparents, teenagers, and young children, complete with a private chef for a celebratory meal and a private wine tasting. For them, it turned from a logistical headache into a celebration they’ll never forget.

Q. When we were chatting before this interview, you said luxury is about “ease.” What does that mean to you?

To me, true luxury is when everything flows. That doesn’t always mean extravagant, but it does mean thoughtful. A wellness retreat in the Alps where transfers, spa treatments, and mountain hikes are seamlessly coordinated. Or a short city break where the flights, hotel, and a hard-to-get dinner reservation are already sorted. We do work with high-touch experiences, but it’s not about the price tag, it’s about removing stress and creating something that feels personal.

Q. In your experience as a traveller and industry professional, have you noticed travel needs changing in recent years?

Very much so. People are no longer just looking for a nice hotel or a beautiful view, they often want something deeper, something that resonates. I’ve noticed a real shift towards travel that feels meaningful. For some, that means behind-the-scenes cultural access; meeting local artisans, exploring places tourists don’t usually see. For others, it’s culinary journeys, connecting with a region through its food and wine.

And increasingly, it’s about restoration: wellness retreats, mindful escapes, and time to simply switch off in a way daily life doesn’t allow. Travel has become less about ticking off a destination and more about creating experiences that inspire, enrich, and stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

T

heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools.

And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust.

“As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

ere at St Christopher’s The Hall, we recently launched a new initiative that is already making a powerful difference to our pupils, The Horizon Programme. It was created in response to something teachers and parents are noticing everywhere: children are growing up in an increasingly digital world, and many of the practical skills, social habits and deeper patterns of thinking that once developed naturally are becoming less familiar. The Horizon Programme is our way of bringing those essential experiences back into daily school life.

We see bright, capable children who can access information instantly, yet sometimes hesitate when faced with openended problems. Many find it challenging to maintain focus in a world full of digital distractions, and collaborative, face-to-

face work can require more practice than it once did. Opportunities to build, create, explore and persevere, cornerstones of childhood, are becoming less frequent in a screen-led culture.

Horizon responds to this directly. Each week, pupils in Years 1–6 take part in purposeful, hands-on sessions built around four pillars: Character, Leadership, Sustainability and Life Skills. These experiences help children rediscover the joy of working together, thinking deeply and developing the real-world confidence that cannot be learned through a screen.

The early impact has been remarkable. Pupils talk about Horizon sessions with genuine excitement. Teachers are observing stronger teamwork, improved perseverance and calmer, more intentional engagement. The programme has brought a renewed sense of curiosity, creativity and focus into the school week.

Already, pupils have explored themes such as sustainability, embracing practical challenges with maturity and ownership, a clear reminder of how much children flourish when given meaningful, real-world tasks. These examples confirm that the skills we hoped to nurture were exactly the ones our pupils needed most.

And these are only the beginning. As the year continues, we will move into a range of practical Life Skills, the small but important tasks children once learned naturally but do not always encounter today. Pupils will learn how to change a bed, tie a tie, make a cup of tea safely, use simple tools, read basic instructions, plan a small budget, and even sew on a button. These may seem modest, yet they foster independence, confidence and a quiet sense of capability that stays with children for life. Parents often say, “I wish someone had taught me these things at school.” Now, we are.

What makes The Horizon Project so powerful is both its warmth and its purpose. It gives children the time and space to try, to get stuck, to recover, to succeed, and to discover that each of these steps is valuable. ormerly the Assisted Conception Unit, The Fertility Centre is a longstanding centre of excellence for fertility treatment and care at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. “S

et on one of St John’s Wood’s most distinguished streets, this pied-à-terre was conceived as a refined London base for a family seeking discretion, comfort, and depth. Designed by Yiannis Stylianou of Studio Ypsilon, the home balances architectural restraint with a quietly expressive interior language, creating a space that feels personal, layered, and enduring.

The property sits close to the historic St John’s Wood Barracks, once headquarters of the Royal Horse Artillery. Rather than overt references, the design responds with subtlety. A darker, more atmospheric palette grounds the interior, allowing heritage, contemporary art, and bespoke craftsmanship to coexist with ease. The result is a home that feels timeless without being formal, and modern without chasing trend.

Bespoke design lies at the heart of the project. Custom joinery and furniture were developed specifically for the space, ensuring proportion, flow, and material integrity throughout.

A sculptural bar cabinet anchors the living area, while carefully selected upholstered pieces introduce softness and familiarity. Fabrics by Le Cuona and Holland & Sherry add richness and tactility, reinforcing a sense of quiet

Art was treated as integral to the architecture of the home. Curated in collaboration with Meso Ventures, a specialist art advisory, the collection reflects the client’s personal narrative while enhancing the spatial experience. A dramatic installation by Enrique Brinkmann forms a focal point within the living space, complemented by a rare mixedmedia work by Bram Bogart from 1955.

Additional pieces sourced through Gallery Rosenfeld complete a collection that feels considered, confident, and deeply personal.

Material choices further elevate the scheme. Textured wallpapers by ARTE soften the interiors, while Verde Green and Calacatta marble mosaics bring depth and refinement to the kitchen.
