But sometimes Anansi could be a little too clever for his own good….. KANISHKA BY ATUL KOCHHAR

26 AUGUST 2026

K

anishka by Atul Kochhar, the acclaimed fine dining Indian restaurant in the heart of Mayfair, presents a culinary exploration of India’s lesser explored Northeastern regions and the historic spice routes that shaped the subcontinent’s diverse food culture. Kanishka is helmed by twice Michelin starred chef Atul Kochhar alongside Executive Chef Ashok Kumar, and showcases bold regional flavours, seasonal British ingredients and a modern approach to Indian cuisine. Named after Emperor Kanishka, whose ancient empire extended across Central Asia and Northern India, Kanishka reflects this cross-cultural heritage across both its cuisine and design. The menu highlights the distinct flavours of India’s Northeast including Assam, Nagaland and Sikkim, alongside signature dishes that express Kochhar’s individual cooking style. Atul Kochhar is recognised as one of the pioneers of modern Indian cuisine in the UK. In 2001, he became the first Indian chef to receive a Michelin star, helping to shift perceptions of Indian cooking through an elevated and modern lens. Over the course of his career, he has led some of London’s most respected kitchens and continues to champion regional Indian food with a focus on seasonality and provenance. At Kanishka, the menus evolve with the seasons and are available both à la carte and as a curated tasting menu. The à la carte selection spans delicately spiced seafood, tandoor grills and slow cooked regional curries, with highlights including seared Orkney scallops with coconut and curry leaf, tandoori monkfish, smoked venison samosa, the signature chicken tikka pie and lamb Rogan Josh, each reflecting Atul Kochhar’s balance of British produce and layered Indian spice. The Tasting Menu presents a defined progression of dishes that showcase the restaurant’s regional influences and the experience begins with snacks such as Lamb Truffle Shorba, Kulth Lentil Cornetto and Partridge Kachori, before moving to Jalpari Nilgiri featuring hand dived Orkney scallops with mountain herbs, curry leaf and caviar. Malai Mach pairs Cornish halibut with sea vegetables and malai curry, while Murgh Makhani presents Norfolk chicken malai tikka with fenugreek and tomato. The menu concludes with Lamb Wellington, Romney Marsh lamb canon wrapped with mushroom and served with rogan jus, bringing together British sourcing and Indian flavour in a single signature dish. Kanishka’s interiors mirror the restaurant’s ethos, combining rich textures and warm tones with subtle references to the Silk Route. A dedicated bar offers cocktails inspired by Indian botanicals and spices, supported by a wine list designed to complement the menu’s bold flavours. Located on Maddox Street in Mayfair, Kanishka offers both main dining and private dining spaces suitable for events, celebrations and business gatherings. Kanishka by Atul Kochhar continues to celebrate the diversity and complexity of Indian cuisine, presenting a considered and regionally focused perspective in one of London’s most established dining areas. kanishkrestaurant.co.uk

PROPERTY

Where Lifestyle Meets Legacy The best homes are shaped not only by architecture, but by the life lived around them.

T

here are few places on Britain’s coastline where the journey from front door to beach takes just moments, where morning coffee is accompanied by uninterrupted Atlantic views, and where each evening ends with the sun sinking into the ocean. At Rigi, a remarkable coastal property overlooking Polzeath Beach, that lifestyle already exists. What makes this opportunity exceptional is the chance to elevate it even further. Occupying a commanding position on Tristram Cliff, Rigi sits within more than half an acre of grounds and enjoys panoramic views across the beach, the Atlantic Ocean and towards Pentire Point. With direct access onto the South West Coast Path and the soft sands below, the property occupies a position that is rarely available and almost impossible to replicate. Life in Polzeath centres around the natural rhythm of the coast. Early morning surfers gather before the crowds arrive. Walkers follow dramatic clifftop paths towards Daymer Bay and Pentire Head. Long lunches spill onto terraces overlooking the sea, while sailing, golf and some of Cornwall’s most celebrated restaurants are all within easy reach. It is a destination that has evolved into one of the country’s most desirable coastal enclaves while retaining its relaxed and informal charm, giving it multigenerational appeal. Against this backdrop, Rigi offers something increasingly rare: the ability to create a home that is entirely your own. Subject to the necessary planning consents, the site presents a remarkable opportunity to reimagine coastal living on a grand scale. Floor-toceiling glazing, wellness spaces, secluded courtyards, entertaining terraces and expansive family accommodation could all be designed around one priceless backdrop: the ever-changing Atlantic horizon. In many prime locations, buyers inherit someone else’s vision. At Rigi, they have the opportunity to create their own. Whether reimagined as a contemporary architectural masterpiece, a multigenerational retreat or a future family legacy, this is far more than a property acquisition. It is a chance to secure one of North Cornwall’s most spectacular settings and shape a home worthy of its surroundings. Some homes offer a view. DEFENDER BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS 2026 3-6 September 2026. The equestrian event of the year!

40 AUGUST 2026

T

he summer sporting and social season is upon us, which can only mean that just over the horizon is the colourful, competitive and captivating event that is the Defender Burghley

Horse Trials. Experience four days of exhilaration, including Dressage, Cross Country and Showjumping, set against the stunning backdrop of Burghley House – one of Britain’s most beautiful and historic venues. Experience the intensity and elegance of the CCI5*-L, where worldclass athletes take on one of the event’s most demanding long-format challenges! Each year Burghley’s organisers explore new ways to enhance the event for visitors to this autumn equestrian spectacular, with a growing suite of hospitality and exclusive experiences. The main hub of the Burghley Horse Trials’ site has had an upgrade and fresh look this year with a new Shopping Avenue to improve the fabulous retail experience for which the event is so renowned. Also for 2026, the event is delighted to offer brand-new reserved course-side parking at the Anniversary Splash - one of the most iconic parts of Burghley’s legendary cross-country course. This exceptionally beautiful spot in Burghley’s Capability Browndesigned parkland has spectacular views of Burghley House and some of the most exciting fences on the cross-country course, so parking spaces will be strictly limited. Reserved picnic parking at the nearby Lion Bridge is already very popular and always sells out. These new course side spaces have been created after the introduction of similar ones on two other spots on the course last year proved incredibly sought-after. Don’t delay

if you would like to secure a prime course-side picnic spot with a side-serving of premium crosscountry action. Following an instant success in 2025, the Lakeside Chalets, is back for 2026. If you would like a private, premium place to entertain friends, family or guests during Agria Burghley, these elegant tents, complete with garden furniture and outdoor as well as indoor space, are perfect. They offer stunning views of Burghley’s parkland and lake and very close to the Main Arena. The Chalets have already sold out for Saturday, but there are a small number still available for Thursday, 3 September, Friday, 4 September and Sunday, 6 September. It’s always fascinating to get a little “behind the scenes” access to a major event such as Burghley Horse Trials and booking one of their official cross-country course-walks, is a great way to gain insight into the intricacies of designer Derek di Grazia’s legendary track. Led by experts, these take place in small groups on Thursday, 3 September and Friday, 4 September, Both “long” (2.5 hours) and “short” (1.5 hours) options are available - and are an unbeatable way to discover more about this beautiful and challenging course before it is jumped on the Saturday. And if you’d like to combine exclusive cross-country insight with a glamorous start to your Burghley experience, we recommend Wednesday afternoon’s “Tea & the Trot-Up” on 2 September. This comprises a special Champagne afternoon tea, with a talk and Q&A with Burghley’s former long-serving course-designer and winning rider, Captain Mark Phillips - followed by a view of the first horse inspection from the Main Arena (not accessible by the public) and a tour of key cross-country fences with Mark Phillips. Celebrate the highlight of the autumn social calendar, at Defender Burghley, with world-class sport, outstanding shopping and hospitality – all the ingredients for the perfect day out! JANE AUSTEN’S HOUSE

J

ane Austen’s House in the picturesque Hampshire village of Chawton is one of the most important literary sites in the world. It was in this inspiring cottage that Jane Austen’s genius flourished and where she wrote, revised, and had published all six of her globally beloved novels. Today, Jane Austen’s House is a cherished museum with an unparalleled collection of Austen treasures, including Jane’s personal letters and first editions of her novels, items of jewellery and the tiny table where she wrote. Visitors can step back in time to 1816 and follow in Jane’s footsteps as they explore the rooms where she lived and wrote, from the sunny Drawing Room where she practised the piano every morning, and where she read Pride and Prejudice aloud to a neighbour on the very day she received her first copy, to the vibrant green Dining Room where she wrote, and the cosy bedroom upstairs that we believe she shared with her beloved sister Cassandra. Immersive audio and subtle historic scents throughout the House

evoke the atmosphere of a bygone era. The gentle sound of piano music drifts from the Drawing Room, the buzz of quiet conversation, excerpts from Jane’s novels and letters, drifts down from the bedroom. The chiming of the grandfather clock and the creak of footsteps on the historic floorboards all add to the charm and atmosphere of this special place. Visitors can stroll around the pretty cottage garden, try their hand at traditional garden games and enjoy Regency dress up, bonnet designing and more. Permanent exhibitions include ‘Jane Austen and the Art of Writing’ which explores Austen’s creative writing process, features objects that directly inspired her writing and displays a rare collection of first editions of all six of her novels, on display together for the first time at the house where she wrote them. A range of special events and festivals take place throughout the year including walks, tours, workshops and talks. Highlights of the events calendar include the museum’s annual Pride and Prejudice Day celebrations in January and Dress Up Day in July. janeaustens.house

andringham Estate is most famous as the private country retreat of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Beyond its magnificent House and Gardens it is a working Estate where conservation and stewardship lie at the heart of an all-encompassing vision to maintain and protect the land and buildings for future generations. The Estate has evolved significantly over five generations of British Monarchs, with the House and Gardens forming the core of visitor enjoyment today. Entering the House, guests will discover rooms, where five generations of British Monarchs have made Sandringham a muchcherished home. Once described as ‘the

This exclusive tour will take in rooms that have not been open to the public before, including guest bedrooms, the Billiards Room, and the Long Library – where Queen Elizabeth II’s 1957 Christmas Broadcast became the first to be televised. Filled with works of art collected by Kings and Queens across the generations, these rooms are an important part of the rich history of Sandringham House. During the tour, guests will also be able to enjoy a glass of Sandringham Gin and tonic – distilled using botanicals grown in the Gardens – or a glass of apple juice made from fruit in the Sandringham orchards, planted by King George VI in the 1930s. sandringhamestate.co.uk

BRAND NEW SANDRINGHAM WATER TOWER HOLIDAY LET

R

ising above the Norfolk countryside on the historic Sandringham Estate, The Water Tower offers one of the most unusual and memorable stays in Britain. Built in 1877 to provide fresh water to the Royal residence, this remarkable Victorian landmark has been thoughtfully restored into a romantic retreat for two, where Royal heritage, architectural significance and far-reaching views combine to create an unforgettable escape. Designed by renowned engineer James Mansergh, the impressive neo-Byzantine tower remains one of the most distinctive buildings on the estate. Its striking circular form, decorative brickwork and elevated position have made it a recognisable feature of the Norfolk landscape for almost 150 years. Originally crowned by a vast 32,000-gallon cast-iron tank supplying water to Sandringham House and the surrounding Estate, the Tower now offers guests the rare opportunity to stay within a genuine piece of Royal history. Inside, the accommodation has been carefully designed to celebrate the building’s unique character. Heritage-inspired tones and neutral interiors complement the Tower’s original features, while reclaimed elements sourced from the wider Estate sit alongside thoughtfully chosen furnishings. Historic pictures and photographs depicting The Royal Family and Sandringham’s rich past create a strong sense of place, ensuring the story of the Tower remains woven throughout the experience. The highlight awaits on the rooftop terrace, where panoramic views stretch across the Sandringham Estate and beyond. Start the day watching the sun rise over the Norfolk countryside, or end it with a sunset drink as the landscape changes colour around you. From this extraordinary vantage point, guests can watch His

HERITAGE TRAIL

The Royal Engineers Museum

T

he Royal Engineers Museum is the world’s foremost museum of military engineering. Housed in our striking Grade II listed building in Gillingham, Kent, our internationally significant collection is a testament to the ingenuity, creativity and determination that have shaped both military history and the modern world. Wars are not won by courage alone. Victory is achieved through planning, innovation, logistics, perseverance and adaptation. This spirit of innovation is brought vividly to life in the Museum’s current War Winning Engineering exhibition. Drawing on original plans, artefacts and archival material, the exhibition explores the extraordinary story of the Mulberry Harbours, the temporary floating ports developed to support the D-Day landings in Normandy. The exhibition highlights the immense challenge facing Allied planners during the Second World War; how to land and sustain a vast invasion force without control of a major French port. The solution was audacious. Engineers designed and constructed two artificial harbours, incorporating pioneering components such as Phoenix caissons, Whale roadways, Beetle pontoons and Bombardon breakwaters. Mulberry Harbours A & B and these other essential constructions were then towed across the channel toward their pivotal debarkation points at Omaha and Gold beaches respectively. These remarkable structures enabled millions of troops, vehicles and tonnes of materiel to enter mainland Europe, playing a critical role in the success of the Allied campaign. Thanks to a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, thousands of wartime blueprints, models and engineering records are being conserved and digitised, resulting in unprecedented public access to one of Britain’s greatest engineering achievements. In celebrating these achievements, the Royal Engineers Museum

58 AUGUST 2026

reminds us that engineering is often history’s hidden force. The War Winning Engineering exhibition is not simply a look back at wartime innovation. It is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when imagination, expertise and determination coalesce to overcome the greatest of challenges. To learn more, and find out how to visit us, go to re-museum.co.uk. We are open Tuesday-Sunday, 10.00 am - 5 pm (last entry 4.00 pm), with a myriad of family-friendly events, talks and activities running throughout the year.

pen to the public since 1991, The Fan Museum is the only organisation in Great Britain of its kind, devoted entirely to the history, culture and craft of the hand fan. As a registered charity, The Fan Museum is committed to the management of their unique collections and restored Grade II* Listed Early Georgian period townhouses for the enjoyment of the public and future generations. In the heart of the World Heritage Site of Greenwich, these townhouses are home to a diverse collection of fans dating from 12th century to present day. The ground floor houses the permanent displays, focusing on different types of fans and their materials, and is supported by an extensive audio guide. The upper floor changes throughout the year, as temporary exhibitions are curated to thematically display the collections (including that of Founder and Director Mrs Hélène

60 AUGUST 2026

The Fan Museum is honoured to have Her Majesty Queen Camilla as its Patron and is delighted that she has loaned two fans from her personal collection to its current exhibition, Monarchy: An Exhibition of Royal Fans. The exhibition displays a wide selection of fans from 18th century to the present day, fans that depict royals or have passed through the hands of British and other European monarchies. Often, these fans were made as commissions or commercial souvenirs to celebrate or commemorate royal events and figures. Built to marry the townhouses together, the enchanting Orangery, decorated with a hand painted Trompe L’oeil mural by artist Jane Barraclough, makes an elegant venue for events and celebrations. Throughout the year, the Orangery is the backdrop of a variety of workshops related to fan making practices, encouraging artistic and cultural collaboration. THE LUXURY OF MEANINGFUL

EXPLORATION

S

ixty years ago, explorer Lars-Eric Lindblad changed the way the world travelled. In 1966, he led the first civilian expedition to Antarctica, believing that if people could experience the world’s most extraordinary places firsthand, they would be inspired to protect them. It was a pioneering vision that gave birth to modern expedition travel. Today, National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions continues that legacy on expeditions to more than 70 destinations around the world. Each small-ship voyage is guided by world-class naturalists, cultural specialists and photographers, whose knowledge deepens every experience. Rather than following rigid itineraries, experienced captains and expedition leaders adapt the journey to nature itself— responding to weather, wildlife sightings and other extraordinary opportunities as they unfold. It’s this style of exploration that increasingly defines luxury for today’s travellers. As luxury travel evolves, it’s no longer measured by thread counts, formal dining or simply ticking destinations off a list. True luxury is defined by

authenticity, discovery and the moments that stay with you long after you return home. Whether standing among emperor penguins in Antarctica, encountering wildlife in the Galápagos or connecting with local communities, these journeys foster genuine connections and leave travellers with a lasting sense of perspective. Every voyage is designed not only to reveal the beauty of the planet but also to inspire a deeper understanding of it. For those seeking more than a holiday, National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions offers something far rarer: the opportunity to return home with unforgettable memories, a renewed sense of wonder and a different perspective on the world. TEST CRICKETER JORDAN COX: FROM FELSTED TO THE OVAL

W

hen Jordan Cox made his Test Cricket debut at the Oval in June 2026, he became the latest in a long line of sportsmen and women to progress from Felsted School in Essex to representing their countries at the highest level. Cox is brimming with confidence, as you would expect of one of the most exciting young cricketers to emerge in recent years. The 25-year-old’s undeniable talent – and a remarkable double-century for Essex at the start of the season – led to his selection in England’s starting XI for the Second Test against New Zealand in the summer of 2026. His international debut marked a significant milestone in a career that always seemed destined for greatness. Though born in Margate, Kent, Cox was educated at Felsted School, the independent boarding school in north Essex. He quickly found himself at home in the practice nets and on the immaculate school cricket pitch, The Front, where his developing skills were nurtured through Felsted’s élite cricket programme under former England Test cricketer Jason Gallian, now Felsted’s Director of Cricket.

Specialist coaching, individualised strength and conditioning, and tailored nutrition prepared Cox well for entry to the professional game. He first turned out for Kent’s Second XI in 2017, made an impression, and soon earned an international age‑group debut with England Under‑19s on their 2019 tour of Bangladesh. A dynamic personality, Cox attracted attention for his explosive top‑order batting and reliable wicket‑keeping and fielding. He continued to play for Kent, then Essex, and for the Oval Invincibles in The Hundred, alongside stints in Australia. His first senior England call‑up came in September 2024 for the IT20 series against Australia. His selection for the 2026 Second Test makes Cox the fifth England Test cricketer in Felsted’s history, where cricket has been played since 1805. Felsted has produced numerous first‑class and international players, including former England internationals Derek Pringle, Nick Knight and John Stephenson, as well as current Surrey player Emma Jones, who recently helped The Blaze secure a fifth win in the women’s One‑Day Cup. Cricket remains a high‑profile sport at Felsted. Led by Gallian, the coaching team includes celebrated Essex cricketer Lissy Macleod, Charlie Knightley (a Cricket World Cup winner with England Over‑50s), and Carla Rudd, formerly of Sussex and Southern Brave. With expert coaching, outstanding facilities and strong links to professional clubs, Felsted continues to inspire young players who dream of pulling on the England whites. Jordan Cox is the latest Felsted sports star ready to inspire the next generation. felsted.org

OUTDOOR LEARNING AT BROOMWOOD BY CARON MACKAY, HEAD OF BROOMWOOD PRE-PREP

84 AUGUST 2026

S

ome of the most valuable learning experiences do not happen while children are sitting at a desk. Outdoor learning allows children to move, explore, experiment and make sense of the world around them in ways that can be difficult to replicate in a traditional classroom. At Broomwood, we are fortunate to have extensive outdoor spaces carefully designed for the different ages and stages of our children. Our playgrounds are not simply places for breaktimes; they are an important part of the learning environment and are used throughout the school day. Being outdoors naturally encourages children to run, climb,

balance and explore. These activities develop strength, coordination and physical confidence, but the benefits go much further. When children navigate stepping stones, test themselves on a balance beam or try a new piece of equipment, they learn to assess risk, overcome uncertainty and persevere. Outdoor learning also has a positive impact on children’s wellbeing. Time outside can improve mood and support emotional regulation, giving children space to move, reset and return to their learning with renewed focus. For some, a practical outdoor activity can unlock engagement in a way that a classroombased lesson may not. That is why we regularly take lessons outside at Broomwood. Children might practise counting and addition using objects found in the playground, explore different materials and textures, or create mud pies and magical potions in the mud kitchen. While it may look like simple play, these activities offer rich opportunities for learning. Children talk, share ideas, take turns and solve problems together until their creation is ready to be served, often to the class teacher. Through imaginative play, they develop vocabulary, confidence and communication skills while having great fun. Our outdoor areas include theatres and a stage for storytelling, costumes for role play, tuff trays for sensory exploration and fine motor development, and larger equipment to support gross motor skills. There are also quieter areas where children can pause, reflect or enjoy a calmer moment with a friend. We have seen first-hand how outdoor learning strengthens focus, independence, confidence and social skills. With thoughtful planning and a little teacher magic, our outdoor spaces become a natural extension of the classroom, only without the desks. AUGUST 2026 85

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS: Unlocking Student Potential

W

ith options ranging from boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a school to suit each and every child. Here are some of the reasons why parents are choosing to give their children the unique experience of private school and why it’s worth the financial investment.

Enriched academic opportunities

One of the accepted benefits of private schools is that they provide exceptional and challenging educational experiences through extracurricular activities, Advanced Placement courses, and the International Baccalaureate programme, just to name a few. The IB programme focuses on school work and on developing you as a whole person. Private school students constantly score top marks on standardized tests and college entrance exams, and many schools have a 100 per cent rate of students attending their university of choice.

style, almost all focus on the importance of small class sizes to individually help students’ weak areas and advance their strengths.

Dedicated teachers

In a study completed by the Fraser Institute in 2007, 91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school. Instructors are both qualified and passionate about their subjects, often holding advanced degrees in their field. Within the tight-knit school community, students have close relationships with their teachers who commonly act as role models. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.

Parental involvement

Private schools are built around open communication between parents and administration, and they make it a priority to involve parents in the community. From frequent parent-teacher meetings, social events such as parent breakfasts and family camping weekends, and the participation of parent committees in fundraising initiatives, families become an integral part of the child’s education. This common ground also helps strengthen parent-child relationships.

“At private schools, you’ll A comprehensive study on class size made find incredible resources by educational researchers Bruce Biddler to support student and David Berliner in 2002 showed that the smaller the class size, the better the average learning in the classroom, student performs on academic achievement tests. Ample resources

At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond. Quality resources provide students with the opportunity to fully explore their interests and talents.

maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower staff-to-student ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds. The strong sense of community found in private schools also discourages dangerous behaviour. In the Fraser Institute study, around 72 per cent of parents surveyed with children in the private school system strongly agreed that their school was safe, which greatly improves the quality of the child’s educational experience and achievement. The discipline they learn also improves their rates for success in post-secondary education when they are in control of their class attendance and achievement.

88 AUGUST 2026

While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a well-rounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, arts or clubs. This involvement helps stimulate students in their studies, as noted in a study at Stanford University that found that students involved in the arts are more motivated to learn and are three times more likely to win a school attendance award. Extracurricular activities can provide a much-needed break from the stresses of academics while developing skills and engaging in valuable social situations.

Development for today’s and tomorrow’s world

Private schools go beyond offering the mandatory subjects required by provincial curriculum; they can offer students a wide range of specializations including arts programs, athletics, maths and science. Private schools are responsible for producing many leaders in politics, business and society, with a history of adapting quickly to changes in technology and culture. And today, they are also sought by parents of children with special needs.

What Should Sixth Form Be For? THE KING’S SCHOOL CANTERBURY’S CITY CENTRE CAMPUS SITS IN THE SHADOW OF THE FAMOUS CATHEDRAL

W

hat should the final years of school be for? Examination preparation? Certainly. Securing a place at the university course of your choice? Undoubtedly. Yet at The King’s School Canterbury, the Sixth Form is built around a broader ambition: to give pupils the freedoms, responsibilities and intellectual opportunities that might not always be available elsewhere. Through our ‘Super-Curriculum’, tailored subject pathways and opportunities to move beyond exam specifications, King’s creates a learning environment that cultivates curiosity: independent research, intellectual risk-taking and the confidence to pursue ideas for their own sake. It is this philosophy that prompted children’s author and former King’s pupil Michael Morpurgo to describe the school as “a university for young people”. Rather than simply preparing pupils for university, King’s gives them the opportunity to experience an intellectual life more often associated with it. Central to this philosophy is the King’s Sixth Form Enrichment Programme. As a ‘launchpad for intellectual adventure’, it allows pupils to choose a pathway that matches their interests while supplementing their main subjects with extension and enrichment options. On a typical Wednesday afternoon, one Sixth Former might be learning Japanese while another researches the ethics of artificial intelligence for an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). At a time when many sixth forms are becoming increasingly examination-focused, King’s 90 AUGUST 2026

deliberately carves out time for intellectual exploration. The breadth of opportunities is striking. With more than 32 post-16 courses on offer, pupils encounter an academic choice more commonly associated with university. Structured teaching and independent research are complemented by over 100 clubs and societies, each organising events and lectures throughout the year. More than 650 music lessons are delivered each week by over 50 specialist teachers, while 25 ensembles rehearse regularly. Last year, 18 productions were staged in the purpose-built Malthouse Theatre, and pupils could choose from over 20 sports, including cricket, fencing, rowing and sailing. Pupils also benefit from the King’s Oxbridge Plus seminars, combining academic stretch with lively small-group discussion, alongside personalised guidance from the Futures Team. The diversity of our city campus further reinforces this open intellectual culture. Each year group includes more than 200 pupils, around 70 joining from other schools and representing 39 nationalities. Perhaps that is what Michael Morpurgo meant by a “university for young people”: not a place that guides pupils down a narrow academic path, but one that gives them the knowledge, freedom and perspectives to discover what they want to become. kings-school.co.uk STRUCTURED TEACHING AND INDEPENDENT RESEARCH ARE COMPLEMENTED BY OVER 100 CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

In a world that continues to change at pace, parents understandably ask what skills and qualities their children will need to thrive in the future. While academic achievement remains vitally important, education today is about so much more. It is about nurturing curiosity, encouraging resilience, developing confidence and helping young people discover not just what they can achieve, but who they can become. The conversations around education continue to evolve, with growing recognition that wellbeing, creativity and realworld skills are just as important as examination results. The most successful schools are those that equip young people to embrace challenge, think independently and adapt confidently to whatever opportunities lie ahead. CLAYESMORE: INDIVIDUAL JOURNEYS, EXTRAORDINARY FUTURES

S

et in the Dorset countryside, Clayesmore possesses a quiet magic – a rare combination of warmth, ambition and opportunity that empowers every child to flourish. At its heart is a deep belief that every child should have the confidence and freedom to discover their own path. Academic ambition sits alongside creative, sporting and personal excellence, with opportunities such as Clayesmore’s unique LEX programme, Model United Nations, Young Enterprise and the Duke of Edinburgh Award developing character, leadership and resilience. Here, pupils are encouraged to explore widely, challenge themselves and discover talents they never knew they had. A child who arrives shy may find their voice through drama; a keen sportsperson may uncover a love of design; an aspiring scientist may discover unexpected leadership qualities. Every pupil is known, valued and supported to pursue a pathway that is right for them. From age four to eighteen, as a co-educational day and boarding school, Clayesmore gives children the time and freedom to grow, change direction and discover their path. Success at Clayesmore is personal and varied because there is no typical Clayesmorian. Pupils follow different paths and pursue different passions, united by the simple fact that they all go on to pursue their dreams. Some progress to Russell Group universities, others to specialist colleges, apprenticeships or careers, their choices shaped by entirely different ambitions and talents. The school does not attempt to define success through a single measure, nor does it tell young people what they should become. Instead, it gives them the confidence to discover who they are,

98 AUGUST 2026

the courage to pursue it and the resilience to enjoy the journey. What emerges is a community of scholars, artists, sportspeople, visionaries and leaders, each shaped by their own experiences and aspirations. At Clayesmore, futures are not prescribed; they are individually shaped, because the role of a school is not to define children, but to help them discover who they might become. century ago, Rolex achieved the seemingly impossible: it created a watch that knew no limits. It could go underwater, brave any storm, and accompany its wearer through all of life’s adventures. Rolex called it the Oyster – and, 100 years on, it remains the epitome of quality, reliability and innovation. The Oyster case is still at the heart of the Rolex collection today – and at the Rolex

Here, the Oyster Perpetual collection sits alongside some of the world’s most celebrated timepieces, offering clients the opportunity to experience Rolex craftsmanship in one of the UK’s premier luxury retail

destinations. Founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf, Rolex built its reputation on precision, innovation and robustness, long before watches became everyday essentials. But the arrival of the Oyster in 1926 marked a genuine turning point. At a time when wristwatches were still considered delicate objects, its hermetically sealed case protected the movement from water and dust – a major breakthrough. And soon the world discovered just how robust the Oyster really was… In 1927, British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wore a Rolex Oyster for her historic swim across the English Channel. After more than ten hours battling cold, churning water, the watch emerged in perfect working order, helping prove its durability in real-world conditions, and beginning Rolex’s long association with exceptional individuals and human achievement. Five years later came another milestone: the Perpetual movement. Powered by the natural motion of the wearer’s wrist, the automatic mechanism removed the need for manual winding and helped lay the foundations for the modern wristwatch. Combined with the Oyster case, the Perpetual movement created something genuinely new – a watch built not simply to tell the time, but a stylish companion that could fit into the rhythm of the

A century on, the Oyster Perpetual still carries many of the design principles established by the original 1926 model. The clean, highly legible dial, balanced proportions and understated elegance remain instantly recognisable, even as modern versions have evolved with contemporary engineering and refined finishes. CASHMERE EYES 2026’s most wearable eye trend swaps bold statements for soft, tactile colour inspired by the quiet luxury of cashmere.

S

tatement eye makeup has taken a back seat this year. After seasons dominated by graphic eyeliner, glitter pigments and dramatic smoky eyes, beauty is embracing something far more understated. The latest trend, known as Cashmere Eyes, focuses on creating softly diffused eye looks using muted, luxurious shades that appear almost woven into the skin. The result is elegant, effortless and refined enough for every day. The name reflects more than just the colour palette. Like the fabric itself, Cashmere Eyes are all about softness, comfort and understated luxury. Shadows are blended until no obvious edges remain, creating a hazy wash of colour that enhances the eyes without demanding

attention. Rather than sharp definition, the emphasis is on depth, texture and subtle dimension. Fashion has played a significant role in the trend’s rise. As wardrobes continue to favour timeless tailoring, elevated knitwear and neutral palettes, makeup is following suit. Warm taupes, mushroom browns, oatmeal, soft cocoa and muted mauves echo the colours found in premium cashmere collections, offering a sophisticated alternative to brighter seasonal shades. The look complements virtually every skin tone and eye colour, making it one of the most universally flattering trends of the year. Texture is equally important. Cream and satin-finish shadows

create a velvety appearance that catches light gently without looking metallic or glittery. Powder formulas remain popular, but are finely milled and blended to produce a cloudlike finish rather than obvious layers of colour. The overall effect is polished yet almost imperceptible. Definition comes through subtle contrast rather than harsh lines. Instead of bold black eyeliner, soft brown or charcoal pencils are gently smudged into the lash line, adding depth while maintaining the blurred aesthetic. Mascara remains lightweight, with separated lashes replacing thick, dramatic volume. Brows are brushed upwards and kept natural, framing the eyes without overpowering them. Cashmere Eyes also embrace versatility. During the day, a single wash of taupe or soft brown creates effortless definition, while evening looks can be deepened by layering richer cocoa or espresso tones through the outer corners. Because the colours are muted rather than highly pigmented, they build beautifully without appearing heavy, making the trend easy to adapt for different occasions. The rest of the face remains intentionally understated. Fresh skin, softly sculpted cheeks and neutral lips allow the gentle eye makeup to remain the focal point without competing for attention. Rather than relying on contrast, the entire look feels harmonious, with every element working together to create quiet sophistication. Ultimately, Cashmere Eyes capture the mood of modern beauty: less about making a statement and more about creating lasting elegance. They prove that soft textures, thoughtful colour and expert blending can feel just as impactful as bold artistry. In a season where restraint has become the BOBBI BROWN LONGultimate luxury, the most fashionable eye makeup WEAR CREAM SHADOW is also the easiest to wear. STICK IN TAUPE

HERITAGE MEETS ARTISTRY: Antana Styles Reimagines the ‘Twilly’ with Scottish Tartan and Hand-Block Print

D

esigned and crafted in Scotland, Antana Styles announces its latest collection of limited-edition accessories. By blending the structured geometry of traditional tartan with the artisanal “perfect imperfection” of hand-block printing, the brand is modernising heritage textile processes to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Expanding beyond their signature ‘Scout Scarf,’ the new collection introduces the Antana Twilly. A versatile, narrow scarf crafted from 100% British wool and organic cotton, the twilly is designed to bridge the gap between casual and formal elegance. “The ‘pussy bow’ style we have created with our tartan twilly is also known as a lavallière,” says co-founder Antonia. “Inspired by the Duchess of La Vallière and the 19th-century French intellectuals, it’s a look that brings a sense of history into a modern wardrobe.” While the block-printed twillies offer a soft, feminine feel, the tartan versions provide a more sculptural silhouette. “The structure and warmth of the wool plays perfectly to the heritage trend,” adds co-founder Susanna. “It’s about celebrating the slow, precise craft of both textiles.”

“The brand is modernising heritage textile processes to create one-of-a-kind pieces”

108 AUGUST 2026

The Antana Twilly can be worn in several different ways including: • A Handbag Accessory: Tightly wrapping a twilly around handbag handles protects the leather from oils and wear, while adding colour. Tying a twilly into a bow on the base of a handle adds a feminine touch. • A Hair Style/Headband: Wearing it over the top of the head for a chic, boho look or wrapping the twilly around a hair tie or weaving it into a braid adds an elegant accent to an outfit. • As a Lavallière: Tied as a classic pussy-bow or draped loosely as a necktie. It can also be paired with a brooch or tucked into a shirt. • A Belt or Wristlet: Tying the twilly around the wrist as a bracelet adds a pop of colour to the arm. Using the longer tartan twilly or tying two twillies together as a belt.

About Antana Styles

Antana Styles is a Perthshire based accessories brand dedicated to Scottish heritage and artisanal hand-block printing. Each piece is a celebration of slow fashion, designed for those who want to add personality and artistry to their everyday style. The process in both techniques is precise and slow. Due to this, each piece is special. Sustainable Craftsmanship: Antana Styles remains committed to a small-batch, low-waste philosophy. By utilising remnant fabrics and organic materials, the brand ensures that every accessory is not only unique but also environmentally conscious antanastyles.com

HOW COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENTS ACTUALLY BOOST YOUR AESTHETIC TREATMENTS The insider secret skin clinics won’t always tell you

W

hether it’s microneedling, Botox, laser, radiofrequency or fillers - if you’re investing in professional aesthetic treatments, you want those results to last. A daily collagen supplement could be the missing link. Collagen supplementation doesn’t just support skin in general. It enhances the results of aesthetic procedures by accelerating healing, reducing inflammation and strengthening the skin’s structural foundation. Microneedling works by creating micro-injuries that trigger collagen production. But if your body is low on the raw materials the amino acids from hydrolysed collagen - it may struggle to build enough new tissue. Taking a minimum of 10,000–12,500mg dose of marine collagen peptides daily ensures your body has what it needs to regenerate. Format matters as much as dose. Liquid collagen is absorbed more efficiently than powders or capsules, and a multi-ingredient liquid formula outperforms collagen alone. Look for a formula with Vitamin C which is essential for your body to absorb the collagen in the first place; hyaluronic acid plumps the skin; MSM and silica help calm inflammation and support connective tissue repair. Posttreatment, when bruising and tissue stress are present, that 112 AUGUST 2026

combination does the heavy lifting. Collagen supplementation also increases skin density, elasticity and hydration - all key factors in how well skin responds to lasers or dermal fillers. “Clients who take a multi-ingredient, high-strength liquid collagen regularly often see faster recovery and better long-term results from their procedures,” says Amy Ware, owner of Amy’s Aesthetics and Beauty in Christchurch, Dorset “When it comes to collagen however it’s a bit like the Wild West. Most collagen on the market has too small a dose to make a difference. We recommend only the best to our clients - Collaluxe - an 11-in-1 liquid formula that is your one-and-done daily skin health shot. It contains the highest dose of marine collagen peptides on the market - at 12,500mg with high strength vitamins , minerals, hyaluronic acid, Retinol, MSM and silica. It helps our clients build skin health from within and they don’t have to faff around with taking multiple supplements every day - it’s all in the one delicious berry flavoured shot.” “If you’re spending hundreds or thousands on in-clinic treatments, it’s a no brainier to give your skin the very best building blocks with a daily dose of Collaluxe’s ProRetinol+. Think of collagen as your aesthetic treatment’s best friend - working behind the scenes to maximise results, minimise downtime and help you glow for longer.” Use code AMY20 for a 20% discount off your first order at collaluxe.co.uk amyaestheticsandbeauty.co.uk

A HEALTHIER HOME: INTERIOR DESIGN FOR BETTER WELL-BEING

T

he human mind is an incredibly powerful, insightful and opulent component within our biological composition. Often neglected, its nurturing takes a back seat to the everyday distractions which misleadingly seem more important. Our mental state is a crucial factor in the mechanism of our movements, actions and the way in which we approach life’s obstacles. There are many ways in which our mental agility can be altered to determine conflicting outcomes of neutral situations. When our mind’s equilibrium is affected, so are our actions. It’s therefore within our best interest to invest the time into protecting and stimulating our brains at all times to ensure that they are healthy and elevated, regardless of the negativity that may surround us. Many factors contribute to our health, happiness and emotional well-being. From the types of food we consume, the amount of exercise we practice, to the types of people we choose to surround ourselves with. All of which contribute to our own personal journey of contentment.

However, one of the fundamental and often “Scientifically proven, our underestimated factors is the environment we choose to situate ourselves in. Scientifically living space can influence proven, our living space can influence our our emotional state of emotional state of mind in both a negative mind in both a negative and positive manner. Interior design can have the power to systematically improve our and positive manner” moods through clever use of colours, fabrics

and furniture feng shui. Tranquil shades, stimulating surface textures and resourceful organisational units can all contribute to the make-up of a healthier habitat, resulting in a happier and more positive you. Colour Co-Ordinated: When it comes to colour, choosing the

correct kind is essential to achieving a positive ambience within a home. Colours visually stimulate us, causing brain cells to react and triggering a torrent of unleashed emotions. Not only do different colours impact our feelings, but the amount of exposure we have to certain shades can also affect the chemical imbalance within our brains. Incorporating colour into a living space should be done with precision and attention to detail. Avoid overindulgence of certain shades and misuse of garish tones, as they can hinder the potential of a prosperous space. Tranquillity can be achieved through clever use of soft serene shades. Incorporating pastel tones such as blues, greens and lilacs into a contemporary living space can result in a calmer and more relaxed environment. This clever colour scheme can be transitioned throughout the home, although it is particularly recommended within areas intended for recreational rest. Organised Interiors: In life, organisation gives us the ability to take control of situations in order to attain positive experiences. It can give us a clear direction and thought process of obstacles ahead, making life a more pleasurable journey. When it comes to our living space, organising physical objects can lead to clearer paths both in reality and within our minds. Structuring a household by decluttering and strategically tidying can help with stress reduction, productivity and emotional elevation. Stylish contemporary sideboards, offer an elegant way to keep living spaces organised and clutter-free. Visually striking on the outside and highly practical within, they provide valuable storage while contributing to a calmer, more considered home. Let There Be Light: Another contributing

factor that has a negative impact on our emotional state of mind is a lack of light. Dark and dingy spaces can psychologically affect our mood, causing it to go into a spiral and effectively weaken. Modern lighting can play a vital role when it comes to elevating interior ambience. Incorporating an array of lighting solutions within your home can effectively improve moods while visually enhancing interiors. Let magical designs guide you out of the darkness and into a more uplifting setting. As visually striking as it is functional, its reflective structure and multitude of light sources cast a warm, radiant glow, instantly brightening any living space. A Breath Of Fresh Air: While we’re exploring how improving things externally can help internally, let’s look beyond the four walls of our abodes. To truly turn a house into a home every inch must feel as if it were purpose-built... this includes the garden. Outdoor spaces are a place to breathe and enjoy nature’s natural calming properties, setting your exterior up to accommodate as much time spent in it as possible, while doing things usually reserved for inside is a bona fide way of improving your experience. chaplins.co.uk AUGUST 2026 123

According to Google Trends, searches for ‘waterproof outdoor cushions’ and ‘how to clean outdoor furniture’ have increased by 5,000% compared to last month, highlighting growing interest among homeowners in caring for and protecting their outdoor furniture. Read on to discover dos and don’ts from Jonny Brierley, Managing Director at British outdoor furniture brand Numa, on protecting and caring for your outdoor furniture this summer and autumn, from the basics of choosing the right furniture to the best ways to clean and care for it. 124 AUGUST 2026

The complete guide to outdoor furniture care this summer and autumn Brierley notes, “Standard outdoor cushions act like sponges, trapping water and staying damp for days. Opt for durable cushions with weatherproof properties, such as cushions with specialised open-cell porous foam. This allows rainwater to permeate the surface and drain through the bottom of the unit rapidly. In most cases, your furniture is dry and ready for guests just an hour after a heavy downpour.” “Durable outdoor materials should be designed for maximum airflow; materials that don’t just dry fast - they stay fresh.” Says Brierley, “At Numa, our cushions are filled with open-cell porous foam. The open-cell structure prevents stagnant moisture that leads to mould, mildew, and unpleasant odours. This makes it a hygienic choice for humid environments or gardens with high tree cover where moisture often lingers.” The do’s and don’ts of protecting your outdoor furniture, by Jonny Brierley Do: Clean your outdoor furniture with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Don’t: Avoid placing hot objects directly on the furniture surfaces. Do: Use coasters and placemats to protect against spills and stains. Do: Store cushions indoors when not in use for extended periods. Do: Cover furniture during harsh weather conditions. Do: Regularly check and tighten any screws or bolts. Do: If you need to move your furniture, lift it rather than dragging it to avoid scratching your patio or deck. numa-style.com/uk

WHERE CRAFT MEETS THE WATER How a Belgian maker turned the overlooked diving board into functional art

A

beautiful pool is rarely the work of a single decision. Architecture, landscape, stone, water and light are brought together patiently. Yet the last object placed at the water’s edge is often treated as an afterthought. Mikel Tube began with a different question: what if the diving board could complete the setting rather than interrupt it? From Belgium, Mikel Tube creates handcrafted wooden diving boards for private residences, resorts and yachts around the world. Their role is practical, but their presence is sculptural. A long line of hardwood draws the eye towards the water; a carefully shaped bracket becomes part of 130 AUGUST 2026

the composition; every curve is considered in relation to the pool and its surroundings. The story started with one obsessive project. Founder Mikel spent years testing proportions, construction methods and finishes until a distinctive design language emerged. The early Revelation models introduced the brand’s floating construction. Later tensioned designs offered a different, more controlled character. Today the collection ranges from the graceful Revelation 1 to the architectural Jensen 1, the refined Derover 1 and the wave-like Ocean 1. Material is central to that identity. The boards are made from carefully selected hardwood, valued for the combination of strength, resilience and natural beauty required beside water. Grain and tone make every piece

individual. Precision lies beneath the apparent simplicity: the clean surface, the concealed backbone, the balance between board and bracket, and the finishing work that allows the wood itself to remain the visual focus. For Mikel, luxury is not decoration added for effect. It is the

freedom to make something appropriate to its setting and to deal directly with the people behind it. Each enquiry is considered as a project. Pool dimensions, the deep-water position, architecture, preferred model, colour and finish all inform the recommendation. Mikel Tube can work with the owner or alongside a pool builder, architect or landscape designer. That personal approach matters when a product must travel from a small European workshop to a home on another continent. The team guides clients through

configuration, preparation, shipping, installation information, care and maintenance. The aim is to make a highly individual object feel straightforward to commission, even at a distance. The result is not a sculpture that must be admired from behind a rope. It is art that children and adults can use; a place for anticipation, courage, laughter and the small ritual of a perfect summer dive. That combination of beauty and use is the point. A Mikel Tube is designed to earn its place in the landscape every day. For homeowners planning a new pool - or looking for the final element that will bring an existing setting together - the diving board deserves the same attention as every other architectural choice. At the water’s edge, function can be beautiful. Sometimes the finishing touch becomes the signature. Explore the collection and start a project at woodendivingboards.com. A CENTURY OF BRITISH CRAFTSMANSHIP, BUILT ON TRUST

I

n 2026, Banham celebrates 100 years of protecting what matters most. For a century, the familyowned British security company has combined craftsmanship, innovation and exceptional service to safeguard England’s finest homes and businesses. Its distinctive locks and alarm bell boxes have become a familiar mark of trust, reflecting a reputation built over generations. The story began in 1926, after a string of burglaries at his family’s West London dress shop, when William F. Banham set out to solve a problem no one had solved. At a time when insurers would only cover premises secured by a door bolted from the inside, he invented the world’s first automatic door bolt – a breakthrough that laid the foundations for one of Britain’s most trusted security brands. William famously challenged London’s burglars to pick his lock, offering a cash prize to anyone who succeeded. None did. The publicity cemented Banham’s reputation as an innovator, while its iconic “Burglar Bill” campaign made the company a familiar name across London. A century later, Banham remains proudly family-owned, now led by the third and fourth generations. While the business has evolved far beyond its original lock, its founding principles remain unchanged: combining British craftsmanship with pioneering innovation to deliver complete peace of mind. Today, Banham designs and manufactures its precision locks and bespoke front doors

in Britain, while also providing monitored alarm systems, luxury safes and keyholding services, to provide complete security for homes and businesses. As customers’ needs have evolved over the past 100 years, so too has Banham’s approach. Innovation has defined every chapter of the company’s history, from pioneering lock and cylinder designs and key registration systems to one of the UK’s first computerised alarm monitoring centres and the Banham Academy, where the next generation of security specialists is trained. Every solution reflects the same philosophy established by William Banham a century ago: that exceptional security should never compromise on quality, craftsmanship or care. As Banham celebrates its centenary, its legacy extends far beyond its products. It is a story of family, resilience and enduring British craftsmanship – trusted for 100 years and still built on the instinct that inspired its first invention: to protect what you cherish.

Banham offers complimentary home security surveys to assess your property’s security and provide tailored recommendations. Call 020 7819 3730 or book online at banham.co.uk.

SMART MEAT THERMOMETERS

T

The must-have BBQ Gadget of the Summer

he days of hovering over the barbecue with a pair of tongs in one hand and a timer in the other are quickly becoming a thing of the past. As outdoor cooking continues to grow in popularity, more home cooks are turning to smart technology to help them achieve restaurant-quality results without the guesswork. Leading the trend is the latest MEATER Pro collection – a range of completely wireless smart meat thermometers designed to make cooking everything from steaks and burgers to brisket and whole chickens easier, more accurate and far less stressful. Unlike traditional thermometers with cumbersome wires trailing from the oven or barbecue, MEATER Pro’s sleek wireless probes stay inside the food while sending live temperature updates directly to your smartphone. There’s no need to repeatedly lift the lid, releasing valuable heat and extending cooking times. Instead, the app provides real-time temperature readings, estimated finish times and alerts when your food is ready to rest and serve. Whether you’re cooking on a gas barbecue, charcoal grill, pellet smoker, pizza oven or in the kitchen, the probes are built to handle the heat. Designed to withstand temperatures of up to 550°C, they can remain in place throughout the entire cook, even during high-temperature searing. They’re also waterproof, dishwasher safe and quick to recharge, making them as practical as they are innovative. The MEATER Pro is ideal for everyday meals and smaller households, offering effortless precision for everything from a midweek roast to perfectly cooked steak. At the top of the range, the MEATER Pro XL is designed for those who love entertaining. Complete with four wireless probes and an integrated Wi-Fi hub, it enables users to monitor several pieces of meat simultaneously, making it easier than ever to cater for larger gatherings. As consumers increasingly embrace connected kitchen technology, products like MEATER Pro are transforming the way people cook. Home chefs can now enjoy the confidence of precision cooking, helping to eliminate overcooked steaks, underdone chicken and the uncertainty that often comes with outdoor entertaining. For anyone planning to spend more time cooking outdoors this summer, a smart meat thermometer is rapidly becoming less of a luxury and more of an essential. By combining intelligent technology with professional-level accuracy, the MEATER Pro collection allows cooks to spend less time worrying about temperatures and more time enjoying great food with family and friends. meater.co.uk

Why Dressing Rooms Are Becoming the Home’s New Living Space

T

he dressing room has evolved far beyond its traditional purpose. Once considered a purely functional area for storing clothes and getting ready, is now increasingly being designed as a room with multiple purposes. As homeowners rethink how they use every corner of the home, the dressing room has become one of the most desirable spaces, creating something practical but also personal, part lounge, sanctuary and of course, still a functional space. This shift reflects a broader change in the way people live. Rather than creating rooms with a single function, consumers are looking for spaces that support different parts of their daily routine. The dressing room is no longer somewhere to use at the start or end of the day now but also now another room to enjoy at various times throughout. Additional elements including perfectly appointed soft furnishings such sofas and occasional seating as well as complimentary artwork are now appearing within the dressing room. As a result, the design approach is also changing, people are now being bolder and more confident with their colour choices and overall design. Up until recently warm neutrals have been the go-to choice for dressing rooms but Neatsmith has seen a shift in design direction. Colours such as soft blues and striking pinks are some of the most popular colours requested. This year, Neatsmith launched a new blue colourway, Tides which has proved to be one of their most successful colours. The beauty of embracing bolder colour is that homeowners are also becoming more adventurous with materials. Uniform, matching interiors are increasingly being replaced by more layered, individual schemes, with mixed metals, contrasting textures and a variety of door finishes brought together to create a truly bespoke dressing room. Glass doors, such as Neatsmith’s Reflex collection has become

a firm favourite from the collection. available in natural silver or smoked grey, are among the most popular options. The doors have a secret as when lit from the inside the glass becomes transparent to reveal the contents of the wardrobe. Glass allows certain pieces to be showcased, enabling homeowners to highlight their prized possessions, which could be an extensive shoe or handbag collection. For others, they may be drawn to the glass fronted style as it transforms storage into a gallery-style display which looks comparable to leading luxury boutique interiors. As always lighting is always integral to design, Neatsmith integrates LED lighting throughout its designs, ensuring that the rooms are as practical as they are atmospheric. Proper lighting enhances usability but also sets the mood, elevating the dressing room into a space that feels considered and complete. Neatsmith’s showroom in Brentwood offers clients the opportunity to experience and view dressing room concepts. Here, visitors can explore finishes, layouts, and door styles, and meet with expert designers to create a bespoke dressing room entirely tailored to their home. RICHMOND OAK GLAZED EXTENSIONS

R

ichmond Oak Glazed Extensions creates bespoke oak-framed and painted Hardwood living spaces for homeowners who want to add character, light and practical space to their properties. Specialising in oak conservatories, orangeries and garden rooms, the company focuses on designing extensions that feel individual rather than standardised. Each project is shaped around the client’s home, lifestyle and vision, helping to create a space that can be used for family life, entertaining or quiet relaxation. A Richmond Oak glazed extension is designed to bring the outdoors closer while improving the way a home can be enjoyed throughout the year. The combination of glass and seasoned oak allows natural light to flow through the room, while the warmth and texture of the oak frame helps the extension blend beautifully with its garden setting. Whether the aim is a larger kitchen, a tranquil garden retreat or a stylish entertaining area, the company’s approach is centred on creating a room that feels both elegant and functional. By using fully seasoned oak a unique dual colour option is possible where the outside can be painted to match the house and still have a natural oak interior. Richmond Oak also highlights the importance of comfort, using features such as solar control glass, ventilation and heating solutions to help make its glazed spaces usable in every season. Using their unique solar control glass glazing to roof and frames you will not find it too hot in Summer or too cold in Winter. Another key part of the Richmond Oak service is its support through the full design and build journey. The process begins with a consultation, followed by a bespoke design stage that can include 3D illustrations. Once

the design is approved, the company can deal with planning permission and building regulations before moving on to construction. As nearly half the Company’s work has been providing solutions for Listed Properties, this is particularly valuable for owners of listed buildings, conservation area properties and homes in sensitive locations, where specialist knowledge is often required. With a focus on bespoke design, natural materials and a guided customer experience, Richmond Oak Glazed Extensions offers homeowners a way to transform ordinary areas into distinctive, light-filled living spaces that enhance both the property and everyday life. DISTINCTIVE

KITCHEN

LIGHTING

M

ost kitchen designers will encourage you to have practical spotlights in your ceiling and practical under cabinet LED lights, but these are only part of the lighting solution. If you have the option to bring in more personality and sparkle – consider decorative lighting as part of the lighting mix to create mood and drama. Whats your Style? Whether it is a traditional country kitchen with hand crafted cabinets, a modern minimalistic or industrial influenced style, there are many decorative lights available to suit. Choose a light that has a metal finish that blends in or perhaps contrasts with the architectural elements in the room such as cabinet handles or taps. Choose lighting to suit your space If you have the luxury of space and have an island or breakfast bar – consider hanging multiple pendants above to provide additional task lighting or a lower level of light output when the spotlights are not required. You may have a low ceiling so choose from a large collection of flush or semi-flush fixtures for this situation. Blend in or stand out? With the continuing trend of open plan kitchen/ dining spaces you may wish to include a range of lights that have matching pendants and chandeliers to bring the space together. Alternatively you may want to choose a sculptural or sparkly chandelier over a nice dining table that becomes a statement of your personality. For more inspirational ideas to brighten up your Kitchen, visit the Distinctive Lighting showroom in Mill Lane, Alton, Hampshire where you will find more than 3,000 lighting models on display. The variety of choice is unrivalled, and our staff are on hand Monday to Friday 9-5pm and Saturday 9-1pm, to provide a friendly advisory service. T: 01420 590510 distinctivelightinguk.com
