Welcome to our October issue... Fine food, cookery demonstrations and cocktail making classes were enjoyed by crowds of 12,000 at the St Albans Street Food Festival earlier this month. There were more than 60 stalls in St Peter’s Street selling a wide variety of food and drink and a pop-up outdoor restaurant run by Lussmanns. Cooking demonstrations were given by Phil Thompson from Thompson@Darcy’s and cookery book author and chef Patti Sloley at the Aga Rangemaster Cookery Theatre. Staff from the Mokoko bar also gave tips on how to make cocktails. Opened in 2013, Bayleaf Restaurant was the natural succession of the take-away service of its creator, Toff Miah. The award-winning owner took his eighteen years of expertise, his vision and his love of Indian cuisine to the forefront of Whetstone’s restaurant scenery and over the past year, his restaurant has continued to build upon its success delivering a delicious array of Indian food appealing to wide-ranging differing palates. Life Magazine’s Jade Hughes visited Bayleaf Restaurant on its first anniversary as a restaurant. Gatwards were established as watch & clockmakers in 1760 in the heart of the lovely old market town of Hitchin. Standing on the corner of Hitchin’s historic market place, the quaint, oak beamed premises still abound with tales of secret passages, ghosts & a clock that struck 13 at midnight! Gatwards celebrated their 250th anniversary in 2010 and are now in their 7th generation & today it is not unusual for them to welcome the 2nd or even 3rd generations of family clients. Situated in the heart of St Albans, the gorgeous new Nikki Kaye jewellery and accessories store feels like it’s always been here. Set in a beautiful 400 year listed building next to Jack Wills, and with collections from about 20 different designers, the variety of jewellery, bags and scarves is extremely refreshing. Over the past few years, Nikki has built a loyal and growing following at her Harpenden shop, and she is delighted with the recent move to St Albans. This gives you just a small taste of exciting events & articles featured in this month’s issue...

St Albans Literary Festival
S
t Albans can boast some pretty heavyweight literary connections. The very first meeting that led to the signing of the Magna Carta – one of the most important pieces of literature globally - was held in St Albans Cathedral. Francis Bacon, the writer thought by many to be the author of some of Shakespeare’s plays, lived in Gorhambury House and Dickens penned some of Bleak House in the city. St Albans School educated the most famous scientific author in the world, Stephen Hawking, who wrote the international best-seller A Brief History of Time. So it was only a matter of time before St Albans hosted a literary festival. And now, between the 6th and 9th November, it will do just that, as more than 60 authors descend on the city, including one of the nation’s most-loved broadcasters Terry Wogan. Wogan will be talking about his new book ‘The little Book of Common Sense... OR Pause for Thought with Wogan’, on the evening of the first day of the festival, Thursday 6th, at the historic Town Hall. The four day festival, which is sponsored by The Book Midwife, has attracted authors of every genre, and promises talks, workshops, panel debates and activities focusing on everything from children’s literature, historical books, chick lit and crime fiction to journalism and blogging. Festival director Claire Walsh says: “The line-up for our first year is amazing and I’m thrilled that our first festival has attracted so many great speakers. There really is something for everyone.” Story telling is at the heart of St Albans’s history. The City has always been the first coaching stop for travellers out of London – as can be seen by the huge number of old inns and pubs in the area - including the oldest in Britain (Ye Olde Fighting Cocks). From the legendary story of Britain’s first Saint, Alban himself in Roman times, to the present day, the City has thrived on tales of Romans, peasants, heretics, monks, royalty, and highwaymen. And the literary events are taking place at many well-loved locations across St Albans, including St Michael’s Manor, St Albans School and the Town Hall, as well as at the 900 year-old Cathedral with a showcase event there on the evening of 8th November, hosted by BBC presenter Martine Croxall. Martine will be joined by best-selling historical authors Leanda de Lisle and Conn Iggulden for “An Evening of Tudor literature” in the magnificent setting of the Lady Chapel; just one of the events celebrating historical writing at the festival. Fans of crime fiction also have much to look forward to, including well known names in the genre such as James Runcie (whose Grantchester Mysteries

is a major new TV series), Ben Aaronovitch (author of best-selling crime series ‘Rivers of London’), and Leigh Russell (author of the Geraldine Steel series), who are coming together to present a discussion panel on Criminal Masterminds. There’s also a Murder Mystery Dinner at the Cathedral, at which three top authors will speak about their novels in between courses, including local author M.J.Arlidge, author of this summer’s Richard and Judy book club read ‘Eeny Meany’. For something a little less serious, Angela Clarke, author of Confessions of a Fashionista, will be joined by three women’s fiction novelists for ‘A Girls’ Night Out’, at which Rowan Coleman (The Accidental Mother, The Memory Book), Liz Frazer (Lifeshambles), and Rachael Lucas (Sealed With a Kiss) will discuss their books and life in general, over a glass of bubbly at Westminster Lodge. More bubby will be served at St Michael’s Manor at a very special literary dinner on the final evening of the festival, at which Jessie Burton will talk about her Sunday Times no.1 bestselling novel ‘The Miniaturist’ and Naomi Wood will discuss her book ‘Mrs Hemingway’, winner of a Jerwood Fiction Prize. There is also a packed children’s programme. Festival Children’s Programme Coordinator, Jennifer Blackford, says: “There is so much to delight the little ones in our first festival, from the chance for youngsters to snuggle up in PJs with hot chocolate and enjoy bedtime stories with local children’s author Tamsyn Murray, to older children learning how to become ghost hunters with the writer Jonathan Stroud.” Jonathan Stroud is the author of the New York Times bestselling Bartimaeus sequence, as well as several stand-alone novels and the much-anticipated new series, Lockwood & Co. Jonathan is also a festival ambassador, along with fellow best-selling author Kate Griffin. Kate said: “St Albans is the perfect place for a literary festival. Who could fail to be inspired by its wonderful, winding old streets, magnificent cathedral and atmospheric beamy pubs? “Our city has clearly been waiting for a literary festival of its own for a very long time.” Jonathan added: “A well-run literary festival can offer a city many benefits: attracting tourists, promoting arts venues and, most importantly, encouraging people, young and old, to discover and celebrate the joy of a good book.” For tickets and further information visit www.stalbansliteraryfestival.co.uk

In September Chipping Barnet welcomed an exciting new addition the high street with the opening of Number 89, a community run ‘pop up’ shop to showcase local arts and crafts and draw on the vibrant heritage of the area.

umber 89 offers high quality giftware and homeware, many of which are hand-made, one-off pieces. These include hand painted furniture, home accessories and gifts from Chalk and Stone, wallpaper and interior accessories by Laura Felicity Design, cards and cushions by Julie Eve Designs, lampshades and other artworks by Monica Hughes. The shop also stocks Pemira Jewellery, children’s clothing from the Dainty Dress Company, Hearts of Glass kiln formed glass, luxury children’s sleepwear by Auraley London, argan oil beauty products from H2Oils and fabulous Slumbering Hound items for your dog.
people interested in selling their merchandise on the High Street to make contact. These people would otherwise struggle to pay the prohibitive shop rents and rates currently being demanded.
Number 89 has been established by Love Barnet with the generous support of the freeholders of the premises, the Eleanor Palmer Trust. This local charity provides accommodation for the elderly either in sheltered homes, residential homes or almshouses. Love Barnet is a grass roots, community group energetically run by long-term resident Gail Laser with Sam Wrightson who came on board last year having just moved to the area. The Barnet Society brought these two committed women together as a result of their shared love of the area.
Love Barnet encourages residents to have a say and take part in shaping the future of the high street and hopes the shop becomes a local forum. They plan to introduce more boutique shops and outlets such as delicatessens and soft play cafes for families, making the most of what is on the doorstep. With its stunning architecture surrounded by beautiful countryside, fascinating history and its first rate transport connections, there is no reason why Chipping Barnet shouldn’t become a more popular destination for families, eating out or shopping.
On behalf of Love Barnet, Gail tried for three years to find empty premises that could be used temporarily by the community to feature work by local artists and artisans. This wasn’t possible until The Eleanor Palmer Trust stepped in offering their empty shop at 89 Barnet High Street (formerly a branch of Greggs Bakers) for her to use in this way. The Eleanor Palmer Trust was happy to do this as long as the shop helped promote their charitable activities; a pretty small ask she thinks!
On that note, please come along and have a browse. Number 89 will be only be open for a few months, but more Love Barnet ‘pop ups’ will follow. Early in November we will be opening two shops in The Spires Shopping Centre, Chipping Barnet, billy and betty: stylish and affordable gifts and plants Tea Station: the adorable new tea shop and child’s play zone.
Using social media, Gail and Sam began an online conversation with Barnet residents. As well as requesting help to do up the shop, they also invited local 1 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4
With expert input from Barnet College, local businesses and an enthusiastic team of volunteers the shop is now trading. Love Barnet have been thrilled to have received so much support and Gail and Sam find it difficult to express their gratitude. What’s more the shop has generated a lot of interest and there is a waiting list of local artists and entrepreneurs wanting to get involved.

Bayleaf Restaurant an elegant eatery offering contemporary Indian cuisine in a modern and stylish setting
O
pened in 2013, Bayleaf Restaurant was the natural succession of the take-away service of its creator, Toff Miah. The awardwinning owner took his eighteen years of expertise, his vision and his love of Indian cuisine to the forefront of Whetstone’s restaurant scenery and over the past year, his restaurant has continued to build upon its success delivering a delicious array of Indian food appealing to wide-ranging differing palates. Life Magazine’s Jade Hughes decided to visit Bayleaf Restaurant on Whetstone High Road on its first anniversary as a restaurant. Bayleaf Restaurant prides itself upon serving high quality Indian food presented in a stylish fashion and it does not disappoint. From the designer crockery and cutlery to the pristine-set tableware and the technology incorporated by its highly- professional waiting staff, Bayleaf Restaurant sets itself above and beyond the competition and it was difficult to not be impressed from the moment of arrival to this new establishment nearing its first anniversary. Whilst we awaited our bespoke order, we found a host of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks on offer which included the Bayleaf Passion cocktail: a refreshing nonalcoholic drink alongside a spectrum of fine wines and spirits to perfectly complement the authentic Indian and Punjabi fine food. The attentions to the finer details were ubiquitous throughout the evening. The knowledge and expertise illustrated by the Bayleaf team was flawless and in the event of any unsurety, a welcoming member of the team was always nearby to assist you in your choices and selections from the comprehensive menu. Our starters consisted of beautifully presented Jhinga Puri; king prawns delicately- cooked with fresh tomatoes, cumin, ginger and an aromatic

blend of spices. Tikka Nazaqat; three individual pieces of chicken gently marinated in spices and yoghurt and then cooked in a traditional charcoal oven. Other equally-delicious appetisers include Mushroom Tandoori, button mushrooms stuffed with potato and paneer and Lajawaab Lamb, a fantastic assortment of lamb cooked ‘three ways’; lamb tikka, sheekh kebab and a lamb chop. All starters are served with a fresh, crispy salad and extras also include a chutney tray and a choice of spicy or plain papadoms. The range of appetising dishes on offer at Bayleaf Restaurant is tantalising. From a well-priced set lunch menu to the wide selection of different dishes on the a la carte menu, it was a feat to finally decide upon our main dish. Unsurprisingly, the Bayleaf Restaurant team maintained its truly-earned reputation through its flavoursome and inspiring dishes. Eventually, we finally agreed to share a wonderfully succulent curry Dumba Bhuna Masala, a mild to medium lamb curry slowly cooked in a uniquely prepared garam masala, along with the traditional ingredients of coriander, ginger and fresh tomato. Our side dishes included a fragrant Punjabi Dall Makhni, a vegetable dish consisting of black lentils and red kidney beans in a creamy sauce, which slow cooked for up to 10 hours to get a perfect consistency. To complete the evening, the Lemon & Lime and Mango sorbets were ideal and illustrated the perfect understanding of Indian cuisine conveyed by the Bayleaf Restaurant’s team. The enviable setting, the inviting atmosphere and mouth- watering menu at Bayleaf Restaurant encourages its patrons to embrace the mood of five-star eating with a warming, yet contemporary service. A Year On with Marcus McGuinness H
oused in Brocket Hall’s former hunting lodge, Auberge du Lac enjoys an idyllic lakeside setting overlooking the beautiful 543 acre country estate and the Hall itself. Marcus joined Auberge du Lac as Head Chef a year ago in November. We caught up with Marcus to discuss his first year, his passion for food and what his hopes are for the future.
How has your first year been at Auberge du Lac? I have loved every minute of it! It’s a tough gig taking over what is a very successful and well known restaurant and making it your own. One year on and I am well settled into this beautiful estate which gives me lots of opportunity to delve into my love of foraging.
What has been your biggest success? Being awarded two AA rosettes within the first 6 months was such a great achievement for me and my team. Keeping the very loyal and faithful Auberge regulars, who I am getting to know, happy feels
2 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4
fantastic and I love hearing people comment about my cooking – that’s the only reason I became a Chef.
What are your hopes for the future? Continue growing into my role as Chef Patron using seasons to achieve quality that is recognised by our regular patrons and encourages new visitors to try our style of cooking. If any more accolades come our way they will be very welcome as a true sign of our success.
Biggest influence in your cooking at the moment? I have always loved getting outdoors and seeing what I can find that I can include in my cooking – the Brocket Hall estate is a great spot for this! I am always listening to feedback from my diners to see what keeps them happy and what they would like to see on the menu. I also try and include as much locally sourced and produced ingredients where I can.

Favourite dish on the Autumn menu? I love this time of year, with Game dry aging in the fridge like the haunch of Venison currently on the menu with smoked tea and red cabbage, one of my favourite autumn dishes. This season is great for hearty roots, chestnuts, berries and wild mushrooms – hearty warming food that is very comforting.
Best part of Autumn/Winter? Christmas! I love Christmas and Auberge du Lac will be open for both Christmas Day and Boxing Day beautifully decorates and a great opportunity to create wonderful Christmas menus. It is also my daughters’ first real Christmas; she has just turned one, which I am sure I am more excited for than she is, Santa’s letter is already written! 1ST-22ND NOVEMBER 2014 ST JOHN’S DOWNSHIRE HILL AND BURGH HOUSE
HAMPSTEAD ARTS FESTIVAL 2014
‘Handpicked, exquisite, special’
Appearing in the Evening Standard’s top 10 ‘best London opera and classical concerts 2013’, the Hampstead Arts Festival returns this year with another programme of highly imaginative, cohesive and unique concerts and talks. Our 2014 programme was planned with the same guiding principles as last year’s: each event should be beautiful, interesting and unique in London that season. Hampstead is a special corner of the city, but it’s also not far from the likes of Wigmore and the Southbank. We want our presentations to be competitive with the best on offer in London, and to attract both local North Londoners and people from further afield.” Eric Usadi, HAF Music Director HAF 2014’s concerts are held together by a few unifying themes. Half of the concerts are of Baroque music. British cellist extraordinaire Natalie Clein will be making her personal debut playing all of Bach’s six cello suites over two concerts. Piano superstar Angela Hewitt will lecture on, and perform, Bach’s complete Art of Fugue. And Mahan Esfahani, perhaps today’s most exciting and eloquent harpsichordist, will be launching his recording on Hyperion of the complete works of Rameau with a lecture-recital. Following the popularity of last year’s jazz concert, two concerts will be copresentations with the EFG London Jazz Festival. Mercury Prize finalist pianist Gwilym Simcock will team up (for the first time) with veteran guitar virtuoso John Etheridge, and there will be an acoustic quartet of sparkling up-and-comers led by trumpeter Freddie Gavita, whose luscious playing can be heard on Jeremy Sans’s score for the recent movie Le Weekend. The quartet also includes pianist Tom Cawley, bassist Calum Gourlay and drummer James Maddren. Simcock and Etheridge will also be leading the educational branch of HAF this year, holding a masterclass with young musicians in association with local Wac Arts charity which strives to help ‘gifted young people facing exceptional challenges to discover their talents and fulfill their potential’. Many of the musicians taking part come from disadvantaged
backgrounds and are considering a career in music. And finally, two concerts will feature Romantic and 20th-century music. The wonderful Prague-based Wihan String Quartet will be featured courtesy of the Cavatina Chamber Music Trust. And tenor Ben Johnson, who won the Audience Prize at the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, will be joined by pianist Sebastian Wybrew, whom festival goers may remember from last year’s breath-taking recital by soprano Sophie Bevan. The ‘words’ side of the festival, led by Piers Plowright, will focus on politics and the arts. Guardian editor Michael Berkeley will be who will talk to Piers about HIS private passions. BBC master presenters Peter Stanford and Melvyn Bragg will be discussing, respectively, recent changes in the Catholic Church and the Radio 4 series In Our Time. Journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown will be talking about immigration and multiculturalism, and finally, a dose of pure arts, HAF will celebrate Dylan Thomas’s centenary with a discussion and readings led by James Roose-Evans, founder of the Hampstead Theatre. All events this year are concentrated into a three-week period in November ‘to lift the spirits between the lawn festivals of summer and the carols of winter’, says Usadi. After the success of last year’s festival – where Eric Usadi’s programming was hailed as a national success – London, national and international audiences have an enormous amount to look forward to this year. As Michael White, Telegraph, said; the concerts are ‘hand-picked, exquisite, special’. EDWARD WAITE Rising star and committed adventurer Ed Waite creates crisp yet graffiti-esque compositions highlighting the iconic architecture of the world’s greatest cities. The artist applies the paint direct from tube to canvas using his signature ‘drizzle’ technique; inspired by the classic American style ketchup bottles on a trip to New York, Waite infuses every canvas with energy and vitality. Throughout the month of October, Gallery Rouge will be offering a free edition of the artist’s stunning book “A Time to Waite” worth £30 with every painting purchased.
NIGEL COOKE Yorkshire born artist Nigel Cooke is known for his highly contrasted monochromatic city scenes. Immediately recognisable, the style alludes to Cooke’s early artistic training as a caricaturist; both fast paced and dynamic. This ability to observe character and translate personality has become an intrinsic part of the way the artist works, easily and effectively portraying the lazy sun baked gondolas in Venice, to the speed of urban life in the Big Apple. An extensive outstanding collection of original acrylic works from the artist are on display in the St. Albans gallery this October. Prices from £650.
RAYFORD With a refreshing whimsical and quirky perspective, Rayford injects the fun factor into his pieces. The artist indulges his imagination, creating a cast of characters from familiar buildings both old and new; by excluding people from his paintings, they are brought to life by the personality and charisma inherent within our everyday surroundings.
The Shard
by Edward Waite £950
New limited edition ‘London Superstars’ is arriving at Gallery Rouge shortly. Featuring 3-D raised elements and a high gloss resin finish the piece is set to be a must-have for collectors. £425 including frame.
RACHEL TIGHE Confident with explosions of colour, each powerful composition created by emerging artist Rachel Tighe takes in the chaos of the city; landmarks and architecture are concentrated and stripped back to their most minimal form. Tighe highlights the pace of the fleeting occupants of every street, enforcing the buzz with her unique take on un-done structure. A series of ‘mini’ paintings are a welcome addition for those with space constraints and looking to make a powerful impact. In the St. Albans gallery now, priced from £200.

Celebrities like Abbey Clancy, members of the Made in Chelsea cast and MTV’s Laura Whitmore watched as models wore soft shades of buttermilk, yellow, moss green, duck egg blue and white in Julien’s vision for Spring/Summer 2015.

A series of figure-hugging shift dresses falling just below the knee suggested a more demure look for the King of Bling. Then came a smattering of mini dresses, as the sexiness was ramped up on knitted swimsuits and even a teeny babydoll-style wedding dress (complete with Cathedral-length veil.) Julien, who has this year dressed names like Beyonce, Megan Fox and Emma Watson, also revealed the second wedding dress on the catwalk, a floor-length finale gown covered with real diamonds, pearls and French Chantilly lace, was worth a staggering £3m.
Burberry Prorsum Burberry previewed its Prorsum Womenswear Spring/Summer 2015 collection live from its custom-built venue in London’s Kensington Gardens. The collection, named ‘The Birds and The Bees’, included bright book cover designs, oversize butterfly prints and hand-drawn honey bees, which were referenced on the hand-painted runway and illustrated on the transparent roof above the 1500 guests. The Birds And The Bees Fabrics: Printed honey gabardine, dégradé silk and suede, wing-pleat tulle, butterfly printed satin, iridescent sequins, indigo denim, glossy shell leather, shearling, textured silk Colours: Poppy red, fern yellow, pale sweet pea, dragonfly blue, beetle green, rosehip Silhouettes: Trench coats, wasp waist denim jackets, layered tulle dresses, field jackets, draped skirts Accessories: Introducing the Burberry Bee Bag, the Burberry Mini Bee Bag, book cover print pouches, the Burberry Field Sneaker, the Burberry Field Sandal, the Burberry Dragonfly Belt Eyewear: Introducing the Burberry Butterfly Shades, now available for purchase and monogramming exclusively at Sunglasshut.com (US, UK & Australia) Guests included British models Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne, who appear together in the current My Burberry fragrance campaign, as well as photographer Mario Testino; actors Dakota Johnson, Vicki Zhao, Jamie Campbell Bower and Anushka Sharma; musicians Paloma Faith, Rae Morris, Rhodes, and Joey Yung; model Amber Le Bon, media personalities Cat Deeley, Donna Air, Olivia Palermo, Elena Perminova and Harvey Weinstein.

Simone Rocha Simone Rocha took inspiration from quaint ‘50s housewives and gave them an edgy spin for SS15, resulting in a cool-girl’s guide to doing demure... Rocha has developed a signature style of full skirts, sheer fabric and asymmetric cuts. She didn’t stray too far from that, but this collection still felt fresh and new. In parts, there was something of the 1950s saucy housewife about it, with headscarves, fluffy mules, nightdresses and even sheer trench coats. Other looks were classic Rocha; sheer dresses with bold, floral applique designs in black, white or red. Footwear is always a highlight with Simone Rocha, too. She’s a fan of a chunky lace-up, often with the focus on a perspex or jewelled low heel. Next season we’re looking forward to her Derby lace-ups and Mary Janes. The new Rocha spin? A kitten heel. joy of an English country garden on a summer’s day. Floral prettiness is tempered by the ‘can do, can dig’ gardeners’ attire with practical pockets and utilitarian shapes. Laser-cut leather and substantial sandals contradict the delicacy of the intricate prints. The Mulberry Girl may be wearing the finest silk, but she remains cool, contemporary, and ready to enjoy herself whatever the English spring weather throws at her...
SORAPOL
Perennial English flowers, hand-sketched in the famous gardens of Kew, Sissinghurst and Great Dixter, inspire the new season prints. The delphinium appears as a grand monochromatic design on printed silk and lace. For an intricately woven jacquard this pretty floral is also contrasted with the uniformity of garden trellis. The colour palette works with White and Cream accented with Black and earthy Khaki, while rich Delphinium Blue offers a pop of colour. In true Mulberry style, prettiness is presented with an edge: dresses and skirts are paired with contemporary leather pieces, some with laser-cut perforations, and luxurious but casual lurex wool cardigans. Sleeves rolled up, our Mulberry girl’s style is inspired by the eccentricities of the English lady gardener. Skirts and pinafores with practical pockets nod to a gardener working in an idyllic country garden but ready for anything, tools in hand, unafraid of a bit of mud! The Mulberry Girl is wearing sandals inspired by classic gardening clogs. These practical and charming shoes are given a beautiful and fashion-forward makeover for this season’s Gardening Sandals, with soles carved from solid wood and criss-crossed leather straps. Natural Vachetta Leather is favoured for its natural and rustic finish; the perfect complement to the lavish prints and fabrics in the collection. Of course, no English country look can be complete without a Wellie, but this is no ordinary rubber boot. The upper of the new Mulberry Garden Wellie features the wild flower design, woven into a rich metallic jacquard.
Sophia Webster “Jungle is massive” For Spring/Summer 15, Sophia Webster played on different interpretations of ‘Jungle’. Finding basis in Henri Rousseau’s fantasy jungle world paintings and Henri Matisse’s whimsical leaf cut outs, Sophia metamorphoses leopard print, jungle flowers and plants with her own signature use of colour and print. Acid and techno colour palettes, coupled with Sophia’s own love of heavy rhythms and underground music, led her to invoke the hedonistic world of a 90s jungle rave. The collection is inspired by rave-wear: feminine clubcolour camo prints, fruity colours mixed with Aztec prints, girly-warrior embellishments and graffiti tags adorn caged booties, platforms and knee-padded thigh-high boots as well as speech bubble bags and fruity backpacks. H E A LT H & B E AU T Y So, in 2011, Galderma invited Dr Ravi Jain of Riverbanks Clinic to devise a programme whereby aesthetic patients would be much more involved in their consultations with their aesthetic doctor. This would help the doctor understand the patient’s needs and so be able to recommend a choice of treatments better suited to each individual patient. This innovative programme was called the Harmony Approach and in January this year Dr Jain presented the concept to thousands of aesthetic doctors at a worldwide convention in Paris. The reception was overwhelming and since then Dr Jain has launched the Harmony Approach to Australia and New Zealand, Dubai, Spain, France, UK, Belgium, Holland, China, Singapore, Hong Kong & Taiwan! ne of the most frequent complaints that patients have when they see their doctor is that they feel that the doctor isn’t actually listening to them, nor taking on board their concerns. As a result the consultations are incomplete and the prescribed treatment may be inappropriate. A survey of 12,500 people was carried out across Europe by dermatology specialist pharmaceutical giant, Galderma, which showed this opinion was very similar in aesthetic medicine.

A timetable of any proposed treatments can then be agreed. Or, if you are nervous, we will give you a copy of the plan so that you can go home and ponder these options in your own time. Aesthetic treatments are not one-offs. Many of our patients have been with us for over 7 years and they look younger today than they did when they first started! That’s because they have invested in subtle skin maintenance plans which discreetly treat the signs of ageing so after each treatment they look that little bit fresher and after a while it all adds up to significant improvements!
Dr Jain explains, “The key to The Harmony Programme is that it is for people who don’t want to look different, they just want to look how they feel. It’s about natural looking tweaks and adjustments that restore facial balance and enhance the appearance rather than altering it.”
4. F ollow-up & Maintenance We always follow-up our patients after a new treatment. This is usually one month later but can be at any time earlier if the patient is particularly concerned about anything.
So what’s involved with a Harmony Consultation?
Initially, the programme was designed just for anti-ageing treatments with dermal fillers and botulinum toxin. These are excellent, natural looking solutions for correcting lines and wrinkles as well as sagging and hollowness of cheeks or thin lips. However, at Riverbanks we have extended its use to cover all of our treatments including solutions for facial threadveins, roseaca, sun damage, pigmentation, skin peels, acne and acne scarring. Dr Jain has trained our experienced medical aestheticians to use the Harmony Approach in all their consultations so that they can fully understand their patients’ needs as well.
Well, first of all, only the best aesthetic clinics have been chosen to use Harmony. At Riverbanks Dr Jain has been using the the Harmony Approach on all of his new patients since early 2013 and the feedback has been extremely favourable. 100% of patients were satisfied with their consultations using this novel method. They all felt much more involved in their treatment plan and they all felt that their doctor listened to them and was careful and attentive to their needs. The treatments they received were all carefully explained and they fully understood their treatment plans for the following twelve months which they found extremely beneficial as it helped them plan their skin care.
he Harmony Consultation involves T 4 steps: 1. Questionnaire This is a brief questionnaire for you to complete when you arrive at Riverbanks Clinic. The purpose is to identify any previous treatments you may have had and also to identify the reasons why you are seeking an aesthetic treatment at this moment. This is fundamental to the whole process and it allows the specialist to understand your motivations and goals of your visit. 2. Skin Assessment Once your motivations have been understood your skin will be analysed by the doctor but he will also want your input in what you think about your skin too. The findings will be charted and this will help

There is a well-kept secret tucked away in leafy Harpenden. Situated just off the High Street, Janne Maheson and her highly-skilled medical aesthetics team at Harpenden Skin Clinic have been developing a growing reputation.
S
ince opening her clinic, Janne has seen a quiet revolution in how people perceive non-surgical cosmetic treatments. “People are definitely more confident about coming in and asking for what they want. I think attitudes have changed towards non-surgical procedures. It’s becoming much more acceptable.”
Renowned for her discretion and light touch, Janne believes in the ‘less is more’ philosophy of aesthetic facial enhancement. She is expert at combining subtle muscle relaxants with judiciously placed dermal fillers to create a naturally rejuvenated look. Janne’s patients come from all over Hertfordshire, drawn not only by her talents and skills, but also by Harpenden Skin Clinic’s personal approach to patient care. “We take great pride in getting to know our clients as this enables us to provide the best possible service. My team and I focus completely on each patient’s individual needs so we can offer an exceptional continuity of care which means they keep coming back, year after year. I’m lucky to be supported by an extremely skilful team that has been personally hand-picked and trained, enabling us to provide the most advanced non-surgical rejuvenation techniques currently available for the whole body and face.”
Aesthetic Treatments Harpenden Skin Clinic offers a broad range of carefully coordinated, complementary procedures including anti-wrinkle treatments with Botox®, skin rejuvenation techniques including HydraFacial and Dermaroller, laser skin resurfacing and pain-free, permanent laser hair removal using Soprano ICE®. Janne believes this holistic approach to treatment produces dramatic, lasting results. With this in mind, she’s recently introduced a new fat reduction technique, CoolTech, to her portfolio. Fat Reduction CoolTech is a revolutionary, non-surgical fat reduction treatment that is helping patients re-sculpt their bodies. It works by safely and effectively eliminating fat without the need for recovery time or the downtime and risks associated with invasive surgery. It cools fat cells to temperatures which naturally trigger cell death. Those cells are then metabolised by the body in the following weeks. Janne recommends a customised treatment plan after an initial consultation. “I’m really excited about this. It literally freezes away your fat with average fat loss reduction of up to 30% with just one treatment. No exercise or special diet is required either. It is literally fat loss without pain!”

Gabrielle Fagan gets to grips with a hybrid health and beauty body lotion to treat bumpy skin
Admittedly, this isn’t the most glamorous looking product on my bathroom shelf but it’s the one that I reach for every morning are another common area). I also like the fact Ameliorate has a light scent but isn’t heavily perfumed, so it doesn’t interfere with my signature scent.

Contouring is the quickest way to drop a few pounds from your face without going on a crash diet. The key is the placement of the product, so familiarise yourself with the natural contours of your face, around your cheekbones and jawline.“Sweeping sculpting powder along the jawline creates the illusion of slimmer, younger features,” Sandler explains. “ Blend the powder softly down onto the neck to avoid a tideline.” Creating natural looking shadow on areas that protrude will help them appear less obvious. Sandler says: “Apply contour under cheekbones to reduce the look of puffiness and gently shade around the sides of the nose to help it look slimmer. “You can even apply contour powder through the eye sockets to set back over-hanging lids, u sing a small eyeshadow brush.”

To dial the contouring up a notch, balance the shading with highlighter to really make your features ‘pop’. Key areas include upper cheekbone, nose bridge, cupid’s bow, inner eye corner, middle eyelid and brow bone. Sandler recommends: “Contrast against the sculpting by applying a light dusting of highlighting powder above it - this will add a subtle ‘lift’ to your features. “Practice makes perfect, and always contour in even light so you can really see what you’re doing.” Don’t be tempted to over-highlight. Applying to the whole brow bone can create an ageing effect, for instance. Achieve an instant facelift by applying a hint of highlighter to the tops of cheekbones. This should be visible when you turn side-on, but not from the front.
Containing optimum levels of lactic acid (a naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acid), the formula encourages the skin’s own exfoliation process, retexturising rough areas. Dementia Care Homes for Older People Reaching the decision to find a care home for a person living with a dementia is not only a difficult choice to make, but it can also be an overwhelming experience. ‘How do we identify a care home with the right expertise in caring for people who live with dementia?’ ‘How will we recognise what constitutes as good dementia care, and where do we start?’ These are natural questions that B&M Care are helping to answer in our new publication ‘A Guide to Selecting a Dementia Care Home.’ Co-written by B&M Care’s Dementia Care Practitioner, Caroline Inch (BSc Dementia Studies), and Business Development Manager, Angela Hunt, this new booklet offers a guide to help you understand what to look for in dementia care. It highlights how B&M Care homes have been consistently delivering high standards of quality dementia care for forty years, and details what you should look for when selecting a care home. “We have attempted to unravel some of the misconceptions about residential dementia care. Furthermore, to explain in an uncomplicated manner what person centred dementia care means 5 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4
for the individual moving into a B&M Care home, and the loved ones involved in making these choices. We want people to understand what good care ‘looks like, feels like and sounds like.’ For us that means to provide good standards of quality care to all residents which embraces our essential values of good care” Angela Hunt, Business Development Manager. “A home that can explain its dementia care philosophy and how it delivers person centred care will easily be able to demonstrate how it makes every moment count for a person living with a dementia” For B&M, our philosophy is to empower and support those who are living with and affected by dementia. We want people who live in our homes to experience the best possible person centred care, individual to their choices and need’ - Caroline Inch, Dementia Care Practitioner. The guide includes a helpful checklist that can be used when visiting care homes with recommended questions to ask. THE IMPORTANCE OF
THE RIGHT FLOORING Developers and interior designers understand the importance of the floor covering in a Domestic or Commercial area. The floor finish is crucial to the success of the room; it might not be as exciting as the latest kitchen gadget or remote controlled lighting but the flooring will have a far greater impact on the overall look and feel of a room than fancy gadgets or the latest technology.
I
nterior designers invest considerable effort into choosing the right flooring solution; one that injects colour and texture but also suits the architectural space, and one that will stand the test of time both physically, by it’s durability, and stylistically by not dating quickly. High street trends can quickly date but choose the right flooring, whether that is contemporary, urban or traditional, and it will have timeless appeal. Natural stone flooring is one such classic look with timeless appeal, whether it is marble, limestone or slate or any of the other myriad natural stone tiles available. Natural stone is, without doubt, beautiful and can be used to create a totally unique floor but it can be difficult and timeconsuming to maintain. Fortunately advances in tile manufacturing technology have meant that porcelain tiles can now offer a great alternative for domestic and commercial use. With not only the look of natural stone and the textures but durability that is hard to match. Responding to demand from the marketplace tile production technology has advanced significantly in recent years with porcelain tiles now available in textured wood effect as well as natural stone, metallic and leather effect finishes, all with the durability of porcelain. The subtle tonal variations and textures in porcelain tiles has encapsulated the naturally occurring variations of stone but the use of porcelain enables complete design flexibility because it can be used as both an interior and exterior tiling material and comes in large sizes (up to 1.2m square) which would not be practical with natural stone. Traditional stone and traditional materials are the source of inspiration but modern tile manufacturing processes have reinterpreted the natural product to be more suitable for the modern home and commercial installations.
6 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4
But porcelain floor tiles are not only available in natural effects – they are available in a range of finishes, colours and sizes from extra-large 1.2mt x 1.2mt to standard smaller sizes and high gloss white tiles through pretty much any colour and finish you can think of including muted shades and strong colour palettes. You can view a wide range of porcelain tiles at the Décor Tiles & Floors showroom in Watford. They hold extensive stocks of high quality porcelain tiles from over 40 top European brands such as Aparici, Casalgrande Padana, and Gardenia Orchidea, as well as designer tiles from Versace and Philippe Starck. Décor Tiles & Floors have developed close business relationships with the leading tile manufacturers across Europe over many years since the company was first established in 1976. Many of these manufacturers have embraced the principles of sustainability in order to preserve our environment, making the choice of porcelain tiles an eco-friendly one. And if you remain convinced that only a natural product would be right for you, then Décor also stock natural stone wall and floor tiles and a wide range of real wood flooring. Décor have many years of experience working with architects, interior designers and developers; their products can be found in high-end luxury homes throughout the UK. So if you need help finding the right flooring for any project whether it is a small residential project or a large commercial project simply call on 01923 248531 or take a look at their website www.decortiles.co.uk.

How to make your home
your dream home T
he average British 1930s semi is a pretty fair size. But it isn’t always big enough for a growing family. And moving house is stressful, expensive and can mean a lot of compromise. The Goodhills loved their house in St Albans. Yet with a new baby taking up more space and two older children vying for room and decibel production, something had to give. First it was the loft space. The Goodhills had watched a neighbour’s house change shape with the help of Civic Design+Build’s team. So they asked for our number. We gave them 5 references from satisfied Civic customers. They called them all. Quite right too. In 2012 we converted the Goodhills’ loft to create some invaluable new living space. Even then the family was eyeing the back of the house for an extension that would give them the lifestyle they desperately wanted. But they’re a sensible couple. They waited to see the quality of the loft conversion, to live in that space to see if we were as good as our reputation suggested. Which is why in 2013, ready for the big job, they got back in touch with our MD, Kevin, who project manages every build. If you’ve been in a 1930s home, you know the typical layout. kitchen, dining and living spaces all cut off from one another. Far from ideal when you’ve got a baby that’s starting to toddle. The Goodhills had a good idea of what they wanted – open plan living. Our architect, David, drew up plans in close consultation and a final design was agreed.
Now the Goodhills’ home is utterly transformed and so is their family life. A superb open living area extends almost seamlessly to the decking and garden through bi-fold doors. A stunning kitchen graces the open plan space and the furniture is chosen for comfort as well as flexible functionality.

SOMETHING SPECIAL IS COMING TO ST ALBANS...
T
omas Kitchen Living are delighted to announce the opening of a new design studio at 65 Catherine Street, St Albans. The company specialises in Classic Modern Kitchens and Furniture - the perfect style for those looking for something modern, yet timeless. The Tomas brand is the brain-child of director and head designer Tom Hinton. The colours, model features and quality all combine to create something rather special indeed. It’s all about FIVE! The range of coloured cabinets is interestingly named THE ABSTRACT FIVE COLLECTION… The original colours are created from five of Tom’s father and grandfather’s abstract oil paintings. Tom likes to explain “it’s a really interesting way to create colour and a nice story to tell, but best of all the colours are really beautiful”. There are five models to choose from in a huge range of sizes and shapes - including curves which are something of a speciality. naturalSHEER and originalSHEER are the eternally popular the handle less models. SCOOP is also really great option with oodles of character - “we sometimes describe it as the mini cooper of the kitchen world”. Tom is also keen to mention that natural wood finishes including book-matched veneers are also offered. Quality, Genuine Value and it’s MADE IN ENGLAND! All the cabinets are (unusually) Made in England, which in itself is a nice surprise. Furthermore, the drawers AND carcasses are all from solid dovetailed oak - which is a real treat, especially considering the price tag! Tomas kitchens are without doubt high end in terms of quality. However, we do find people are often pleasantly surprised when they discover the upper middle point. Beyond the designer styling and smart branding, there lies a strong belief in providing genuine value for money. Typically a Tomas kitchen costs between 25k and 35k including appliances and Corian/Quartz countertops. The Danish Connection Tom’s wife and co-director, Mette, is Danish and it is through this family connection that a love of Danish design and furniture evolved. In addition to the beautiful kitchens, Tomas Kitchen Living are specialist dealers for many of the great furniture and lighting brands such as Carl Hansen and Son, Fritz Hansen, Louis Poulsen and Gubi. These products are incredibly beautiful and well designed - and work exceptionally well with our kitchens, says Tom.

TOM HINTON
The Art of Juxtaposition The Classic Modern style as defined by Tomas, naturally works well in ultramodern settings. For example, the stainless steel trims of originalSHEER teamed with something like Foreshore Slate will look very at home in a cool and sophisticated city pad. Less apparent, however is the way Tomas works in period properties. The timeless Classic Modern lines and muted colours juxtapose superbly with virtually any period features. The way the styles contrast and complement each other creates a fabulous eclectic feel – without a sense of busy–ness! Expert Design and Installation Complete projects from initial design to installation are under taken, including associated building works as and when required. The process begins with an informal chat about the project, budgets, product and time frames. If the design brief is taken on a home survey will be carried out (usually by Tom). A drawing will then be set up as a ‘blank canvas’ in preparation for a liveDESIGN session (usually at the studio – but sometimes on-line). This is where you and Tom brainstorm the design and specification of your new kitchen. After this the team will develop your proposal, which includes an itemised quotation and three dimensional sketches. Once the proposal is accepted detailed drawings are issued and the ball is rolling! Tomas Kitchen Living even have their own team of employed installers (who are all the best kind of perfectionists)! Opening this Saturday 1st November Tomas Kitchen Living opens its doors to the public from Saturday 1st November, although enquiries are already being taken. Having recently had a sneak preview, I would urge you to go along to see how special this small but perfectly formed place is going to be! It’s probably best to phone ahead if possible, or simply drop in after the 1st for an informal chat and look around. Be it a complete kitchen project or some classic Danish furniture or lighting Tom and the team will be pleased to welcome you to the new Design Studio. Are Bifold Doors
the new Black?
...
I
t’s hard to imagine a time before Bifold doors, when the backs of our houses were not sheets of glazing folding back to dissolve the boundary between inside and outside. The past few years have seen the numbers of bifolds being fitted between 2011-2013 increasing by almost 10,000 installations, this number is due to increase again this year. This Bifold boom has seen hundreds of kitchen windows and doors being knocked through to make way for this magnificent addition to your home. The increase in the Bifold doors popularity has certainly had an effect on how people use their home. With people gravitating towards the room with the best view of the garden open plan living has become the norm, with sitting rooms taking a back seat to the larger metreage being spent in these open rooms. These impressive doors from Origin and Schuco are ideal for creating a light and spacious room in your home. Herts Bifold Doors are accredited in installing both products and assisting on your transformation. These doors can be found to be in our state of the art showroom, voted Origins showroom of the year 2014. Here you will find a variety of designs, colours and accessories including between the glass blinds, electric blinds and roof lights. Our showroom is located in St Albans with each door installed within a module to enable customers to imagine the doors in their own home.

Create a Luxury Oasis W e love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home. Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams. Bathroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.
A stylish bAth
The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub.

BAT H R O O M S
This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look.
the shower option
Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and

Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll and toothbrush holder. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness.
An AppeAling bAsin
Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household.

Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

Aquarooms Bathrooms makes major changes to keep a head of the field: After 18 months at our new location
Things can not be better “The future starts in Now ” may sound like the title of the next Sci-Fi movie, but Grant Bliben (pictured), the managing director of Aquarooms, is using it with good reason as he extols his vision for the brand and its store. The change of strategy and to move its showroom from Southgate to Barnet was a main factor. After being at Hampden Square, Southgate showroom for over 25years it was time to move so we Opened the new showroom in Barnet with a high street position easy parking and large frontage and started again with the latest in European products using the manufacturers with the best back up and support . We still show over 22 fully tiled Bathroom settings with a large selection of accessories, mirrors and cabinets with the showroom emphasis on Design and Installation. The market is split between different buyers now there are those who will buy by price regardless of the quality or make, we will try to match prices with our price promise, so even the internet is not always the cheapest option sometimes it’s cheaper local. The thrust of this strategy, as explained by Grant, is to openly reposition the Aquarooms brand locally more towards the “design installation and maintenance aspects of the business. But “Aquarooms is on a journey to get from being among the pack of Bathroom Showrooms to a place where we’re a business that leans towards firmly being a local bathroom specialist. Grant declares. “The high level goal of the Aquarooms is to create a Local respected Brand for its customers. Getting the very best
...from your space
G
odwins have been serving your local area for over 40 years, advising, designing bathrooms and pioneering the latest trends from Avocado suites in the 70s, Dark Blue and Red in the 80s, through the white suites of Europe in the 90s up to the latest rimless toilets in 2014. The most recent trend has been for wall mounted furniture, so much so that our samples and factory clearance shop has an abundance of basins with pedestals to sell for £50 a time. Our service revolves around getting the very best from your space. What do we need? Just a very simple drawing showing the sizes, positions of doors and windows nothing more. This means that we see what you see in your house and like a personal shopper in Harvey Nicholls we show you designs and styles that suit you and your room. (No, one size fits all) Having tested your likes and dislikes we produce a tailored written quote along with computer rendered images of the actual bathroom you’ve designed with us. We know that everybody has a budget, even the schemes (houses) with seven bathrooms in just the single home. We will only sell branded goods, the cost of plumbers makes it expensive to buy inferior products from the internet, and that is what those products are, they aren’t cheap deals, they are deals on cheap products.
8 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4
Aftersales and spares aren’t concepts they are familiar with. The biggest mistake we encounter with internet products are where people rush in to buy a toilet or basin unit as the plumber is sitting in their house and the internet products are wrong, broken or just not the right thing. We appreciate that every customer is different, even just the difference between the genders. Do most men appreciate that women might not want to wash their hair every time they shower? Test it out and ask your nearest and dearest. Ask him to do some Zumba so he’s fit and ready to handstand in the shower cubicle in order to wash his wobbly bits, if he only has that rain shower head as it is after all like rain, coming straight down, not like the Las Vegas hotel shower heads. With these things in mind we encourage you to touch, feel and think over all the products you will be facing for the next 3650 mornings, evening and late night dashes. it’s best to dive straight in From the moment they step through the front door, the majority of British homeowners know that their home is ‘the one’. In fact, over half of us have already decided to purchase our dream home less than an hour after viewing the property
I
t may seem surprising then that, while we find it so easy to make some of life’s bigger decisions, it’s often the smaller choices that we spend days, weeks or even months agonising over. Ironically, according to research from swimming pool builder Origin Leisure, we decide that a house is for us within minutes, but can spend months deliberating whether to make smaller home improvements. We trust our instinct for big decisions, but 60 per cent of us admitted to spending more time weighing up the pros and cons of the finer details rather than having the confidence to go with our gut feeling. Gary Taylor of Origin Leisure said: “Our 30 years’ experience has taught us that too much deliberating
8 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4
can often be counterproductive. A swimming pool is considered a luxury for some and a necessity to others, but what many have in common is that they wish they’d made the decision to add a pool to their home much sooner. Our advice is to listen to your instinct and do what will make you and your family happy.” Two families who took the plunge and never looked back are Mr and Mrs Henderson from Oxfordshire and Mrs Shears from Buckinghamshire. The Hendersons are no stranger to building projects. The couple built their beautiful and modern home ten years ago, an experience that left them less than enthused at the prospect of another home improvement project.

origin’s work was beyond our expectations. We would recommend them to anyone who wants to have a pool house as part of their home and day to day life While both had very firm ideas about the standard of finish on the property, the builders had a very different idea. Mr Henderson explains: “The sad thing about the original house project was that the builders’ idea of finished was very different to ours. The building took over a year, and we began to think the early enthusiasm was beginning to wane slightly. So when we made the decision to add a pool house in the garden we couldn’t help remembering some of the pitfalls.” Luckily, history was not destined to repeat itself. The couple chose a striking bespoke modern pool house from Origin Leisure, who handled the project from start to finish, and they couldn’t be happier with the final result. The pool house has stunning stain softwood weatherboard exterior and slate grey roof to compliment the Hendersons home and fit in with the surrounding area. Grey aluminium bi-fold doors open up the building into the garden, bringing the outside in, while the ceramic tiles, a grey washed timber roof and country cream walls finish the interior beautifully. The building, which includes an additional extension with a changing room, shower room and WC, measures a total of 128m² and includes a porch and store room. Origin Leisure undertook every element of the process, from the initial ideas to planning, construction and completion. The couple were surprised at how stress-free the project was, as Mr Henderson explains: “Origin was infinitely patient with our changes of mind, moments of inspiration, and indecisions about detail. The company is very open to innovation and are happy to consider details in length, from pool size to tiling style and the unique roof option that we developed between us. “Origin’s focus is on quality. From director to architect,
project manager and the building team, the company’s experience shone through. From the very start of the project, right through to our first swim, the knowledge and understanding of this long established company gave us confidence in their numerous abilities. “Origin’s work was beyond our expectations. We would recommend them to anyone who wants to have a pool house as part of their home and day to day life.” Another happy customer is Mrs Shears, who also took advantage of Origin Leisure’s ability to manage the whole project from start to finish in the design and build of her barn-style pool house. What’s Your Environmental View?
N
owadays we are all constantly being encouraged to do our ‘bit’ for the environment and are accustomed to the energy efficiency labels that are on all the white appliances that we buy, as these indicate the extent to which the product we are purchasing is energy efficient, and therefore how environmentally friendly it is. With this in mind most of us, given the option, will probably opt for the more energy efficient rated models secure in the knowledge that we are doing our ‘bit’ for the environment and also probably saving money on our electricity and gas bills. Many years ago now, the UK Government turned their attention to the fabric of our houses and developed a system whereby homeowners could choose energy efficient products for other areas of their home as well. Much work has been done in the last decade to bring new, higher standards to the thermal efficiency of windows and doors and this has now finally evolved to the point where the windows and doors you choose should carry the highly recognisable and understandable energy efficiency labels called Window Energy Rating. Hazlemere Windows, Doors and Conservatories have always promoted the energy efficiency of their new generation aluminium windows and doors and they wasted no time in testing their systems to ascertain what level on the familiar A-C scale they could achieve. Quite simply, the higher the rating, the more thermally efficient the window system is. Using the latest, state-of-the-art materials Hazlemere successfully proved they could provide homeowners with an aluminium or UPVC window system that provided the highest possible ‘A’ rating. Independently tested, Hazlemere’s range of Eco-friendly windows offers homeowners a real choice of energy efficient, environmentally-friendly products. The minimum standard for replacement windows since 1st October 2010 when the Building Regulations were tightened up is a Window Energy Rating (WER) of “C” or a minimum combined U value of 1.6W/m2K. Both UK property owners and installers are now legally required to fit these thermally
8 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4
efficient windows (if replacing existing windows or fitting new ones to an extension etc), as without these energy saving products being installed, FENSA will not issue a FENSA certificate to prove compliance. According to the Energy Saving Trust, nearly a fifth of heat lost from uninsulated homes is through the windows. Investing in one of Hazlemere’s Eco-friendly window systems makes a significant contribution to reducing this which in turn helps to keep homes warmer. Using less energy to keep you warm not only reduces your carbon emissions but saves you money as well. For example, Hazlemere’s UPVC triple glazed windows achieve an A+ rating, having a combined U-Value of 1.0 W/M2K. However, achieving energy efficiency as a window is only part of the story if homeowners are concerned with the overall environmental impact of what they buy as well as saving money. Hazlemere’s aluminium Eco-friendly windows are obviously made from aluminium which has a very positive environmental story all of its own. Apart from having a long life in use, once it reaches the end of its life it can be infinitely recycled. Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy needed to produce the original material plus the finished product has all of the same qualities as the original as well which means it can be recycled time and time again. Hazlemere Window Company Ltd is a family owned business that has been trading locally over three decades, providing all of its window, door and conservatory customers with a fully comprehensive robust ten year guarantee, backed up by its own in-house team of service engineers, who are dedicated to maintaining the quality of both products and installation. The company owns the freehold of their 56,000 square feet Head Office, Factory and Showroom in High Wycombe, which is where their own experienced team of designers, consultants, surveyors, fabricators, installers and service engineers are based. lamingo Blinds and Awnings are recognised as one of the best established blind companies in the London, having been fitting blinds around London area since 1980. The company has almost certainly the largest range available of all it`s competitors, much of which is displayed in the Potters Bar showroom. On show are awnings from leading German awning manufacture Weinor, blinds from Luxaflex the world leader in innovative blind products, and Plantation Shutters from S-Craft. Luxaflex have recently launched 2 new ranges of shutters; Vinyl, which has a 25 year guarantee and a Faux wood range with 10 years , both of which have had phenomenal success. And curtains displayed using fabrics from many well know brands. The company still retains much of it`s domestic customer base, and has noticed over the last few months, confidence re-emerging in the housing market, where customers have been either refurbishing throughout , or moving into new homes. Without doubt, shutters are the ‘in’ product currently, with the company`s growth this year being 65%.

Land for development? Are you wondering how to make the most of your LAND? If you have a home with development potential like the one below, you will probably have received letters from builders, developers and estate agents. You probably know that you can choose how to sell the land: • Sell the site subject to planning • Get planning yourself then sell it • Build the new home and sell that • Do a joint venture with a reputable builder
Before – 1 house and garden
Site sold subject to planning
After – 2 large detached houses
If you are wondering how to maximise your land value – give us a call, we’re able to help with any of the four methods of sale and can work with you to maximise the land value.
In many cases, landowners prefer our developer contacts to seek planning at their own expense so you can remain free from costs and planning expenses. Please call quickly, we have builders chasing us for land and we recommend acting now before the CIL (tax) is introduced which can seriously reduce the value of your land. Lance Trendall
