St George’s College, Weybridge hosts the MMA Conference 2014 for music teaching professionals

Between Friday 16th and Sunday 18th May, St George’s College in Weybridge proudly opened its doors to over 150 music educators from across the country, as it hosted the MMA (Music Teaching Professionals) Conference 2014

T

he conference was extremely well attended, owing in large part to the impressive selection of guest speakers for the event, including the likes of Richard Hallam MBE, Professor Edward Higginbottom of New College, Oxford, Suzy Digby and Ken Burton amongst others. With a variety of sessions that ranged from music technology to world music, Dalcroze to improvising with chamber ensembles and a historical performance workshop of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, there was plenty to inspire the delegates. The St George’s College musicians put on a special concert of music on the evening of Friday 16th in memory of past MMA president, Douglas Fox, which was well received with enthusiastic and lengthy applause. This year’s Douglas Fox prize was shared between Sultan Kara and Andrew Miller both in the Upper Sixth at St George’s College in recognition of their outstanding contribution to music at the school over the years. The delegates enjoyed participating in a

service of Vespers on Saturday 17th, which included the magnificent setting of Hear my words, ye people by Parry. Led by Father Martin and Father Aidan of St George’s Weybridge, the service was a wonderful climax of the conference at which the College Chamber Choir sang alongside the Choristers of New College, Oxford leaving delegates in high spirits before attending their champagne reception and black tie gala dinner. Hosting this event was a proud moment for the music department of St George’s College, under the direction of Tansy Castledine, Director of Music at the College. The pupils involved felt very honoured too; Jamie Mark (Year 4 bassoonist) commented that: “it had been a privilege to participate in such a wonderful workshop session with Pro Corda and that it was really thought provoking to have been a part of something so special in the music education world”. The weekend was an enormous success with delegates commenting that: “it was the best conference they had attended in recent years”.

We are pleased to announce that over the course of the weekend, Tansy Castledine was voted President-Elect of the MMA for 2015-2016.

They were runners up last year, but Esher Golden Lions intend to return back to Tobago in December to chase the International Sevens title, having made it to the final against New York City.

T

he Lions experienced a fantastic week in Tobago, participating in some serious games of rugby against an impressive line-up of teams. This year’s tournament is set to be just as fierce as they face tough competition from teams across the UK, USA, Canada and a number of Caribbean islands. Supporting a colourful new kit, the battle for a place on the team has already started and a number of in-house events have taken place to raise money for the squad to get out to Tobago. Aside from the Sevens, the partnership between the Tobago Division of Tourism and Esher RFC continues to flourish, last month the club launched a fun filled ‘Tobago evening’ in collaboration with Tour Operator and cosponsor Golden Holidays, launching special holiday packages for supporters to travel to Tobago with the Sevens squad on this year’s tour. During the evening the members got to sample Carib beer – Trinidad and Tobago’s own branded lager whilst catching a glimpse of the new and exciting Under 12’s kit. Dean Hartry, Sponsorship Manager at Esher RFC comments: “Eshers sponsorship initiative with Tobago Division of Tourism

and Golden Holidays, has definitely been the most exciting yet. From a small match day activation, the response from supporters and our members was terrific, which got us brainstorming further opportunities. Sevens is all about sun, fun, carnival and dress up culture, and syncs so well with Tobago as a holiday destination. Finding out that there is an International Tobago sevens was a huge bonus and has cemented the partnership further, with Esher also sending out coaches to Tobago to help develop rugby on the island. We are onto something special here and look forward to the journey together.” To raise destination awareness the Tobago Division of Tourism have taken a mobile promotional trailer, known as the

John Inverdale, TV broadcaster and journalist comments: ‘Esher’s link with Tobago has been hugely successful. When the Tobagolator turns up at the ground, it has a strange effect of bringing a bit of sunshine to Molesey Road. There really is something magical about it, putting aside the kit sponsorship and fundraising events, the great thing has been encouraging awareness of the destination, and also making our members aware of the 7s tournament out there. The players who attended last year had the best week of their lives. It’s a far cry from the days when I used to go on tour to Devon.’ Apart from the rugby, the island of Tobago also hosts a number of sporting events such as cycling, football and cricket, offering excellent facilities for sports tournaments. Flower Show contemporary alternatives to the garden lawn • A selection of awe-inspiring show gardens • Tradestands – find new sheds, pots irrigation systems and more. • RHS Celebrity Theatre supported by Anglian Home Improvements Show gardens From the seven deadly sins, to the wilds of Australia - there are diverse themes for the show gardens this year. Each of the Conceptual Gardens is themed around one of the seven deadly sins. Rachel Parker Soden is creating a garden with a theme of lust, re-contextualising the flower show garden as a brothel in its own red light district and the flower show visitor as a voyeur. Nilufer Danis’s design for wrath has been inspired by the instability of an eruptive volcano. Marcus Green’s beautiful meadow planting has at its centre an artificial representation of the perfect lawn, depicting the sin of envy, while Sarah Jane Rothwell and Joan Ma Roig’s greed design depicts a confessionary and invites the viewer to consider the analogy between judge and sinner. Katerina Rafaj’s gluttony garden focuses on the sin of food waste in a world where millions of people are starving, and Sheena Seeks is creating a sloth-inspired design. Finally, Amanda Miller is creating a design symbolising pride. The conceptual gardens at Hampton are often thought-provoking, inspiring and often controversial and this year looks no different. ·

“From the seven deadly sins, to the wilds of Australia - there are diverse themes for the show gardens this year”

Former RHS Chelsea Flower Show designer Jim Fogarty is designing a show garden called ‘Essence of Australia’ that recreates the feel of the Australian Garden at Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens. The garden celebrates Australian flora and contemporary design as seen at the multi-award-winning 15-hectare Australian Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne, a division of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. The show garden will evoke the relaxed feel of

Australia and Australians’ love of outdoor living as well as celebrating the states and gardening landscapes of Victoria and Northern Territory as two key travel destinations for British holidaymakers. · Still with an international flavour, World Vision is presenting the last of its trilogy of gardens inspired by the 30th anniversary of the Ethiopian famine – ‘The World Vision Garden’. · Viewing platforms either side of the Jordans Cereals wildlife-themed garden will give excellent vantage points of Selina Botham’s design, while Rebecca Govier’s abstract legacy-themed design for Macmillan Cancer Support is another highlight. · Coolings Garden Centre is celebrating its centenary with a woodland-style garden.

Other highlights include: • A central wildlife feature will include a native butterfly house • The RHS will be staging a new Talks Theatre with talks on a wide range of gardening topics • Writhlington School will be creating a stunning and educational orchid display themed around a project they are undertaking in Sikkim, India • Your Garden, Your Budget (in association with the APL) will showcase gardens that include practical solutions to the kind of design problems faced by home gardeners and at a range of budgets.

MULTI-MILLIONAIRE DENTIST’S CAR COLLECTION FOR SALE AT

£100MILLION

A dentist who has amassed Britain’s biggest private car collection is selling up - for an astonishing £100 MILLION

D

r James Hull owns more than 450 classics, ranging from multi-million pound Jaguars through to Morris Minors. His collection includes Lord Mountbatten’s Mini Traveller, Winston Churchill’s Austin and a Bentley owned by Elton John. There are cars covering every decade from the 1930s onwards including a super-rare 1950s Jaguar XKSS, his Jaguar D-Type will be worth in excess of £4 million while the C-Type is also worth millions.
Dr Hull, who made his fortune pioneering cosmetic dentistry in the UK, has battled cancer three times in the past four years, earning him the nickname Lazarus to friends. Now, because of his health issues, he has decided to sell up and hopes to a buyer will come in with a £100 million-plus offer.

The collection, located in Herefordshire, is made up of 457 classic vehicles, 365 pedal cars and 300 pieces of memorabilia including model aircraft from WW1 and WW2.It is thought to be the highest value sale in the UK with Dr Hull, 53, only willing to sell the huge collection as one lot. A number of the cars have appeared at motor shows around the world, competed in the Mille Miglia and even been used for the Queen’s 80th birthday parade, and won concours awards.

Despite interest from abroad, it is hoped the collection will remain in the UK.

He said: ‘I’m merely a passionate custodian of this hugely significant part of British history and, with luck, I will succeed in finding a home that can not only be enjoyed and treasured by the British public but also be admired by visitors from across the world. ‘It is the culmination of a life-long hobby. Each car has its story and all have played a part in the history of

British motoring. It is part of our heritage.’ The collection also includes a Humber which was owned by the judge presiding over the Profumo Affair and a 1961 Jaguar E-Type which belonged to Britain’s world motorcycle champion Mike Hailwood. There is a collection of British campervans from the 40s, 50s and 60s, and within the 4x4 section early Land Rovers and pristine classic Range Rovers. A Sinclair C5 from the 1980s is also in the collection.

Hull has travelled extensively around the world tracking down some of the rarest, original British models, he then ships them back to the UK where they are stripped down before being restored, repainted and re-assembled by his team of mechanics. This process, requiring extensive research to source original components and fittings, takes typically three years per car and has ensured the vehicles in this collection are world renowned for their quality and integrity.

James Hull made his money in dentistry, founding James Hull Associates in 1987.He became the market leader in cosmetic dentistry, specialising in teeth whitening, veneers and implants.
Over the years he spent his spare time building up the phenomenal collection of classic cars.

Over the past decade, prices for classic cars have gone through the roof, outperforming every other investment and sending the value of the collection soaring. If he finds a buyer willing to stump up the nine-figure asking price, Dr Hull won’t be entirely sure what he will do next.

He added: ‘I’m a collector, so who knows what will turn up next! My wife hopes it will be something smaller like stamps.’ JUNE 2014 17

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2014 Highlights Chelsea Flower Show bloomed this year with celebrities from all over the world, garden designers, florists, gardeners, traders and garden lovers visiting the Show

T

he Chelsea Flower show is one of the most famous flower shows in the world, held each year by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The Royal Horticultural Society is one of the world’s leading horticultural organisations and the UK’s leading gardening charity. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is the garden design equivalent of a catwalk at a fashion show. The flower show sold out in record time, as the UK’s love affair with gardening shows no sign of dimming. Year on year, garden designers at the Chelsea Flower Show are expected to put on a novel show, and this year certainly did not disappoint. The Queen arrived at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show with Princess Beatrice for a first glimpse before it opened to the public. Her Majesty beamed as she was handed a traditional Thai decoration by the designers of a 100,000-flower display inspired by Thailand. Mary Berry, Stephen Fry, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Paxman, Esther Rantzen, Ben Fogle, Sir Michael Parkinson, Rowan Atkinson, Twiggy, Rob Brydon and Piers Morgan were among those making a VIP appearance at this year’s show. As temperatures soared past 25C - hotter than Rio de Janeiro - gardeners were scrambling to protect their blooms. Many

took to covering plants, particularly peonies and irises, in muslin to keep off the rays. Others tied up their flowers and watered them repeatedly to stop them opening too early. Elsewhere at the show were dresses made of flowers, a garden that was being tended by Vikings and a 1914 Potter’s Garden, representing a rural potter going to war in France. Many marked the First World War centenary. The show gardens included a number of war-themed displays - which were opened with memorial readings by celebrities.

Jeremy Paxman read a war-time poem, as did Stephen Fry who spoke at a garden which featured a model war horse. Actors Rowan Atkinson and Nigel Havers read poems by First World War poets who died during the conflict, on the No Man’s Land ABF The Soldiers’ Charity garden.

RHS Vice President and one of Britain’s best loved gardeners, Alan Titchmarsh MBE VMH DL, was presented with a special one off RHS Sunflower Award at the 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments, for his garden feature that celebrated the 50th Anniversary of RHS Britain in Bloom and Alan’s own fifty years in horticulture.

The garden represents a landscape marked by the fighting in northern France, including trenches, a mine crater pond and the yew trees found in war cemeteries. Designer Charlotte Rowe said she was inspired by her own family’s involvement in the First World War, including her grandfather, a second lieutenant with the Middlesex Regiment. She said: ‘The idea behind it is that the land, No Man’s Land, was fought over again and again with the front line moving very little, and the land got completely messed up and churned up. ‘The concept is the healing of the land after severe conflict, and relating it to the human body and spirit.’ Plants used in the

As Alan designed the garden feature for the RHS it could not be judged, however the horticultural charity wanted to recognise the immense effort of the Alan and his team, which included designer Kate Gould and landscaper Mark Gregory. Sunflowers form a special part of the Bloom 50th anniversary celebrations, which is why the Society awarded Alan with the RHS Sunflower Award. It is the first time Alan has designed a garden at the world’s most famous horticultural event for almost 30 years, when he was awarded an RHS Gold Medal in 1985 for his Country Kitchen garden. This year Alan joined forces with another RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winner, Kate Gould, to create ‘From the Moors to the Sea - a celebration of RHS Britain in Bloom’. a sunflower, from RHS Britain in Bloom judge Jim Buttress, aka ‘Judge Dread’, Alan Titchmarsh, said: “I was told ‘we need you on your garden at half past six’ and I thought ‘what’s gone wrong?’. I had no idea that you would all be here. I’ve had a wonderful time working on this garden, especially with Mark, Kate and the Bloom volunteers. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is a very special show for me, it’s always been a special show, I’ve been coming since 1969, and I want to thank all of you for your support and wonderful comments about the garden. Thank you very much indeed.” Some of the 2014 Award Winners include:

* RHS CHELSEA YOUNG FLORIST OF THE YEAR 2014 Daisy Ellen Burgoyne, 22, from Flowers at Frosts in Milton Keynes has been crowned winner for 2014 The competition required florists aged 16-25 to design and create a ‘fantasy floral dress’, to be worn at a crystal themed ball, with the criteria stating that two thirds of the dress should be made from fresh flowers and plant materials. With a number of stunning creations catching the judges’ eye, Daisy saw off stiff competition from some of the most talented young florists in the UK to take the crown with her intricate and creative design.

BEST SHOW GARDEN 2014 The Laurent-Perrier Garden Designed by Luciano Giubbilei, the garden

was formed from a series of defined layers, continuing Luciano’s ongoing interest in texture, form and light. The cool, contemplative design showed the interplay of natural elements with a simple geometric layout. The intention was to stimulate the enjoyment of observation, and to invite exploration of stillness and movement through relationships between the contrasting forms and materials in the garden. The planting featured delicate forms alongside stronger, bolder leaves; the walls combined lustres and materials; the stone surfaces executed with contrasting finishes; the flow and reflection of water giving light and animation. Ursula von Rydingsvard’s timeless forms, constructed in roughly hewn layers of cedar, contributed to the exploration of composition and texture.

BBC/RHS CHOICE AWARD 2014 – SHOW GARDEN Hope on the Horizon Designed by Matt Keightley. A contemplative space that represented the process which injured servicemen and women go through on the road to recovery, designed to support Help for Heroes. Granite blocks symbolising the soldiers’ physical wellbeing and planting reflecting their mental wellbeing. The journey started with a rough, unfinished and overgrown area, evolving through the garden to conclude with a perfectly structured section. An avenue of hornbeams drew attention to a sculpture resembling a

horizon, a reminder to the soldiers that they all have a bright future ahead. As well as areas to relax and reflect, the garden also offered focal points along the journey.

BBC/RHS CHOICE AWARD 2014 & BEST FRESH GARDEN 2014 The Mind’s Eye. Designed by LBC Design The garden was created for the RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) in partnership with Countryside. The mind’s eye is the human ability to create images or scenes without the need for sight. This garden was designed to stimulate the mind’s eye through a series of contrasting sensory experiences. Designed as a sensory garden for blind and partially sighted people, as well as those with sight, the space challenged the fully sighted viewer by sometimes blurring or distorting the image we expect to see. The garden was divided into four zones: open woodland, damp and shady woodland, prairie border and arid border. Water acted as a unifying element to link and emphasise the architectural features. The centrepiece a beautiful glass cube water feature.

BEST ARTISAN GARDEN 2014 Togenkyo A Paradise on Earth. Designed by Kazuyuki Ishihara. This garden was inspired by the fable of Togenkyo, a place of beautiful scenery that can help people to forget their troubles and strife, but that once visited cannot be revisited. This beautiful garden was designed to capture the concept of Togenkyo, bringing the idea to a global audience at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The planting scheme featured plenty of greenery, chosen to help fix an image of the garden in visitors’ minds, so that they can take the memory of the scenery away with them to recall and be comforted by when they are feeling troubled.

BBC/RHS CHOICE AWARD 2014 – ARTISAN GARDEN Le Tour de Yorkshire This garden depicted the Yorkshire rural and urban landscapes through which the Tour de France Grand Départ 2014 will pass in July. The rural side of the garden featured plants that evoke the North York Moors. Boulders formed steps into this section of the design. An elliptical dish of water was the main feature of the urban part of the garden; the surface of the black water in the dish broken by a ring of bubbles. Through the rear stone 30 JUNE 2014

wall of the garden a striking band of recycled bike wheels, sourced from recycling centres in Yorkshire, references the Grand Départ.

RHS CHELSEA PLANT OF THE YEAR 2014 A hydrangea making its world debut at Chelsea took the top spot Hydrangea macrophylla MISS SAORI (‘H20-2’) has been bred in Kyoto by young plantsman Ryoji Irie and named for his fiancé who has since become his wife. It’s a striking

double-flowered, mophead cultivar with each floret having deep rose margins softening to white centres and wavy edges. The blooms are long-lasting, produced in June and on first year wood. Their appeal was further heightened by dark foliage. Plants thrive in full sun or semi-shade, suit border or container growing and can also be used as a cut flower. It was entered by Hillier Nurseries & Garden Centres, which also won its 69th consecutive Gold medal at Chelsea in this its 150th anniversary year.

THE GREAT BRITISH DRAMA Tuesday 17th – Saturday 21st June 2014

R

oyal Ascot, one of the iconic summer highlights of the British sporting and social calendar opens its gates on Tuesday 17th June, for five days of world class racing, pageantry, high fashion and fine dining, celebrated through this year’s theme of ‘The Great British Drama’. The centrepiece of Ascot’s year, Royal Ascot, is arguably the world’s most famous race meeting. First organised in 1711 at the behest of Queen Anne, and attended by British Monarchs ever since, each day of Royal Ascot traditionally begins with the Royal procession in which the Queen along with her family

and guests parade in front of the packed grandstands in their horse-drawn carriages. The Queen has long had a special affinity with the meeting, although her personal success has heightened over the past two years after her horse Estimate won the Queen’s Vase during Royal Ascot 2012 and won the feature race of the entire meeting, the Gold Cup, last year. Increasingly in recent years, the five-day meeting attracts some of the best horses from around the globe and Royal Ascot 2014 promises to be another draw for the world’s best racehorses. Ascot’s Head of Communications and International Racing, Nick Smith said: “Last season’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Treve, Europe’s best horse on current rankings looks like lining up in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes while from further afield the likes of No

Nay Never for the USA is likely to return after his sensational win in the Norfolk Stakes last year. Hopefully The Queen’s Estimate will be back to repeat her magnificent performance in the Gold Cup last year.” Off the track, the Royal meeting will as ever draw eyes from the international world of fashion. The hats, shoes and dresses at Royal Ascot are as colourful and creative as the jockeys’ silks. At Royal Ascot everywhere one turns there is an outfit to admire. Gentlemen in the Royal Enclosure are required to wear black or grey morning dress with a waistcoat and tie and their incredibly smart, attire serves as the perfect foil for the ladies who, within certain guidelines, get a much freer remit for expression. Fine dining has always been an important ingredient of the Royal Ascot experience and 2014 is no exception. The new multi-million

OF ROYAL ASCOT 2014 pound restaurant On 5 will open its doors for the first time at this year’s Royal Meeting with Michelin starred chef Tom Kerridge hosting events, boasting breathtaking views across the racecourse. Not to be outdone, the Panoramic Restaurant also has a Michelin starred chef as its host as Atul Kochhar brings a taste of India to proceedings. French gastronomy house Lenôtre also comes to Royal Ascot for the first time this year, where diners can feast on traditional continental cuisine created from ingredients arriving fresh from Paris every morning in Balmoral, Carriages and Sandringham restaurants. The exquisite Parade Ring restaurant with views overlooking the Parade Ring, exclusive Trackside and Windsor Forest Restaurants with stunning views of Ascot Heath and theatrical new Royal Ascot Village completes Royal Ascot’s Fine Dining portfolio. Royal Academist David Mach will have his latest work ‘Great British Drama’ on display this year’s Royal Ascot. The work celebrates the

breadth of appeal of Royal Ascot and brings together decades of the world’s best racing, pageantry, style and elegance into one stunning piece of art. Charles Barnett, Chief Executive of Ascot Racecourse, said: “This is a captivating snapshot of Royal Ascot past and present, which encapsulates everything that is special about the week. We feel David has captured perfectly the verve and vibrancy of our historic event.” Royal Ascot 2014 will feature 17 Group races, including seven Group Ones, with total prize money across five days in excess of £5.3million, an increase of £310,000 from last year. The minimum value of any race at Royal Ascot remains £60,000. A shift in scheduling for the 2014 meeting sees the feature race moved back

from the third to the fourth race each day at a Royal Ascot which is looking like having a distinctly International feel. All races throughout the week will be televised live on Channel 4. Tickets to Royal Ascot range from £17-£75 with addition group discounts available. There are three ticket types available; The Royal Enclosure (members only), Grandstand Admission and Silver Ring Admission. There are a range of Fining Dining options at Royal Ascot showcased accordingly to the enclosure they afford guests entry into. Fine Dining starts from £250 per person. A FLAVOUR JOURNEY In the village of Ripley, a stone’s throw from the helter-skelter of the A3 and the frustration of the M25, is a hidden oasis of calm – and balm – for the soul. For in the middle of the high street, nestled behind an elegant Georgian façade, is Drake’s, Surrey’s best-kept fine dining secret. By Joanna Wood

T

his Michelin-starred restaurant is the domain of restaurateurs Steve and Serina Drake and it’s celebrating its tenth birthday this year. In the last decade chef Steve has developed and refined his food beyond recognition, from essentially a very classic French style of cooking, to what the foodie mafia would term modern Anglo-European. These days he’s ditched the conventional three course meal option for a tasting menu – in his words, a “flavour journey” – which guides diners gently through seven courses of clever, creative and, importantly, flavourpacked food. Don’t worry – the courses are delicate mouthfuls, which, with each successive dish, build to a satisfying finale. They are elegant, wonderfully balanced offerings – showcasing some of the best produce in the UK – with sophisticated layering of taste and textures. You won’t leave feeling over-full, just satisfied: and that’s even with a taste-tickler (amuse bouche), bread and petits fours included in your culinary odyssey. That’s the mark of a very talented chef. At this time of the year, typically, a ‘journey’ might kick off with a palate awakener of watercress soup. Mine had a perfect little quail’s egg peeping out of the vibrant green liquid and a hint of smoked

tomato (which gave this soup a really substantial, ‘meaty’ body). Accompanying sour dough bread and red pepper brioche were served with onion and thyme butter (surprisingly delicate). It all added up to a refined whole, which set the scene for the rest of the meal. I can honestly say that none of the ensuing menu disappointed. Steve’s menu was a deft exploration of flavour and texture. Interesting, but not silly, ingredient matches popped up from time to time. Tender, tasty Cornish lamb – mouthfuls of both breast and saddle – was teamed with pickled rhubarb (sweeter than you’d think) and samphire (more usually served with fish). It worked. A grapefruit curd (one of two desserts) came with the savoury kick of peanut praline and a condensed milk sorbet. You get the drift. I could go on, as every dish had its highlights. The food was considerably enhanced, too, by skilful wine pairing. A lovely biodynamic Chablis with a turbot dish in particular, stood out. And I need also to mention the elegant, clean lined, dining room (look out for the cow themed wallpaper at the back), and the glorious garden in which to sip a pre prandial glass of bubbly on a summer’s day. All of this means that Drake’s is the equal to main a more famous London restaurant. But don’t take my word for it – check it out for yourself and I guarantee you’ll find that Steve is serving up some of the best food in the south east of England.

Meticulously sourced, over a number of years, Dawn Smith, the founder of RTfact, only selects greenery that is so botanically correct, you wouldn’t be able to tell it isn’t the real thing. ‘ I always want the finished look to offer something unique for the customer, so I source pots and containers from around the world to give that point of difference for my clients. I’m always on the lookout for unusual trees and foliage to add interest as well as durability to the garden. It’s an initial investment but will provide hassle free enjoyment for years to come’

RTfact work very closely with private customers and Interior designers, collaborating from initial design stage to give the perfect artificial solution. Dawn says” I love it when a client comes up with a challenge. We recently had to create a ‘living’ wall effect in a dark courtyard space – four stories up, balanced on scaffolding!” The client was delighted: “I find working with RTfact Flowers hugely reassuring as they have expertise in creating artificial arrangements that do not look artificial. I really enjoy working with Dawn as she seems to understand what I want to create and I trust her advice. I have never been disappointed and my expectations are always exceeded” Anoushka Feiler, Bestique, Best in show, Hampton Court Flower Show.

Nothing is too much trouble. RTfact take pride in offering a bespoke service to find the perfect unique finish for their client’s home. For example, sourcing made to measure window boxes in a variety of finishes and providing complete flexibility in terms of greenery or flowers to complete the desired look. So take a bit of stress out of your life this season and add some finishing touches that will look great all year round, come rain or shine. Garden furniture designed to withstand the great British Summer

T

he Bridgman name has been associated with fine furniture since the 1950’s, when the company established itself as a high quality manufacturer. Over the past decades Bridgman has designed, produced and sold a wide variety of furniture. In the late 1980’s Bridgman began production of garden furniture and soon became established as a leading supplier of quality outdoor ranges.

“Once again I was delighted with my Bridgman garden furniture. It scores top marks for comfort and looks. The rattan chairs I bought last year wintered outside and look new. Ordering was easy and delivery very fast. Thank you.” - Claire Addison

Featuring a large selection of all-weather rattan, teak and aluminium furniture; many of the ranges are supplied with Bridgman’s 10 year guarantee. Bridgman garden furniture is built to remain outside all year round and is virtually maintenance free.

Several different styles of furniture are available to choose from with waterproof cushions. For the 2014 season, there is an additional option to introduce a ‘pop’ of colour with brilliant waterproof scatter cushions.

“Very pleased with Bridgman furniture. My latest purchase is the second lot of furniture I have had from them. Excellent quality and purchased knowing that it is covered by a10 year guarantee. Delivery was good and packaging excellent so all goods arrived in factory condition.” - Miriam Smith

The company has thousands of residential and commercial customers in the U.K. and all around the world relaxing outdoors on Bridgman furniture. Bridgman furniture, just sit back and enjoy! Bridgman ‘wine-proof’ cushions. Oh ….. And they’re completely waterproof too! www.bridgman.co.uk/waterproof-cushions

Bridgman continues to push the boundaries and innovate and in recent years the company has developed an exciting range of outdoor cushions. These sumptuous waterproof cushions are exclusive to Bridgman and have been designed to withstand rain, hail even frost and snow. So conveniently leave everything outside and use the furniture whenever you want. As well as being waterproof the cushions are highly stain resistant and almost impossible to mark. Spills can be wiped straight off and ground in stains can be easily washed away. The cushions have been tested with red wine (what a waste!), coffee, sun cream and chlorine to name but a few. Nothing stained or marked. 50 JUNE 2014

HOLIDAY CARE FOR PLANTS

F

ollowing on from last months article regarding the use of water in the garden, it is essential that you do not forget that newly planted shrubs and trees should not be left to their own devices when you go on holiday. At this time of year the garden, not surprisingly, tends to take a back seat. With the heat and dryness of summer, it only takes a day or two to turn a healthy flourishing garden into a scorched savannah. Before leaving the garden to it’s own devices, whilst you take your well earned break, it is essential that any prized plants will be watered whilst you are away. Some of you will have friends or house sitters that can be cajoled or reminded to keep an eye on things, for the rest of us it involves some form of automatic watering system. Watering systems can range from state of the art self contained systems, with their own storage tanks, to small but effective systems using a water timer and soaker hose or drippers. Unfortunately it is not possible

52 JUNE 2014

to say which type of system would be best for your garden or lifestyle, and prices obviously vary accordingly. What I can say is that there is a system for most budgets. For most situations I would advocate the use of a water timer, such as those sold by Hozelock or Claber, attached to the outdoor tap, to control the water to a soaker hose. Soaker hose, also known as leaky or drip hose, is best used for plants in beds and borders, it is wrapped around the base of the plants gently leaking water into the soil whilst the timer is

“Although watering systems may seem complicated, in reality they are quite easy to install effectively with the correct advice on. This type of hose can be expected to leak 3 to 4 litres of water per metre of hose per hour. Bearing this in mind, for a tree you may need

to have the water on for several hours to supply an adequate quantity of water to it. I would also advise that when you first install the soaker hose you manually drench the soil with a hosepipe which will subsequently improve the dispersal of the water once you start using it. For containers and isolated plants a micro sprinkler or dripper would be better, applying the water directly to the root ball of the plant. Micro sprinklers are also usually rated in terms of the water consumption per hour which again gives you an idea of the amount of water being applied, however being better targeted they are less wasteful of water and it is easier to determine the correct amount of time required. Although watering systems may seem complicated, in reality they are quite easy to install effectively with the correct advice, most garden centres should be capable of

H OUS E & GA R D E N

providing this. What I would suggest is that any system you install is put in place at least a few weeks before you first go away, as the timing of the water will need to be adjusted. In this time you will need to keep an eye on the system until the amount of water being applied is adequate, but not excessive. Care is initially required to ensure that the water is being applied long enough for it to soak into the soil as far as the root ball. Whatever the system you use, this should always be done in combination with mulching the surface to reduce evaporation. Putting a layer of mulch, such as bark on the surface, dramatically reduces water loss from the soil. It enables the water to soak in slowly, rather than run off and for it to remain in the upper soil levels, which is important for establishing plants. Once the watering is in hand I would recommend you relax and enjoy your holiday, with one less thing to worry about. www.plantsforall.co.uk

Origin pools perfecting their craft since 1989

S

ince Origin’s inception over thirty years ago the world has changed considerably. A recent survey in The Times showed our changing tastes are never more marked than when it comes to the possessions we desire most. Today as a nation the top three on our wish lists are a high performance car, a designer watch and a swimming pool. In the eighties people were content with a car phone and a dishwasher!

So Origin’s world has never looked better. They change with the times, constantly listen to the thoughts and ideas of their increasingly sophisticated clientele, and deliver their finished products beyond expectations. That is the Origin difference. Visit the website, read the new literature, and talk to Origin about what is possible for you, your home and your family.

Today the world of swimming at home couldn’t be more different. Beautifully designed buildings nestling in gardens, within easy reach of the home, or in many cases attached, as a perfectly blended extension, using all the same colours and fabric as the main house. Interiors are constantly changing too. Recently the trend has moved away from the timber appearance, and gone towards painted finishes, resulting in a brighter state-of-the-art feel that reflects light beautifully, and shows off the pool to great effect. Origin’s designers can sense these changes of taste, and are constantly looking for exciting embellishments to add to what is their tried and tested principle - to create carefully designed well built constructions that benefit from only the best new innovations that the increasingly sophisticated swimming pool world has to offer. And talking of principles, Origin’s main objective has always been to take every single project from concept to completion - meaning that the teams, many of whom have been with the company since those early days, are responsible for every element of the process internally, from design to building and the final fitting. This makes Origin an exception in the complex world of pool construction, and goes some way to explaining why the company is recognised as the leading builder of indoor pool houses. A reputation acquired over thirty years of technical progress. Today the company’s flagship range is the Olympic, widely accepted as the ultimate way to swim at home. But at the late development stage is the Eco Pool House, an innovative design that benefits from today’s eco thinking and is set to change the rules of pool house technology.

Seall Landscapes In The Surrey Hills

I

was born in the Surrey Hills – born into me was a love of the inspiration given by nature. The landscapes and environment throughout the surrey Hills are best viewed in terms of archaeology as well as nature, as throughout it’s history back even to pre-Roman times it has been valued for it’s riches, both aesthetic & resource. This included it’s strong links with the cultivation and harvesting of timber for the manufacture of gun powder, which has meant that the naturally beautifully sculpted land has all been worked by the hand of man and of course woman. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of the hedgerows and their banks in spring time and I cannot think of a way of improving how they look or their place in their landscape. – Sometimes I pass the same spot and don’t notice the same view. That is when I know that I need to call on the old and much forgotten Holmbury skill of leaning on a field gate and taking in the view for a good half an hour. As a landscape and garden designer I believe

56 JUNE 2014

that part of my job is to connect my client with the beauty that is, or can be found in their greater landscape, For this, I use the garden as the medium. Throughout the Surrey Hills the Arts and Crafts movement of architecture and it’s input on the garden is beautifully present, Lutyns, Vasey and of course Gertrude Jekyl. The effects of these masters of their trade as well of the wealth of the old estates that funded them, the industry, the agriculture and the woodland management have left a legacy that needs to be appreciated, shared and managed. The landscape around us is a living breathing thing and as conservationist it is my privilege to work with wild flower meadows, ponds and lakes. I consider it a gift to have lived my life up to now inside these Hills and through my garden building and conservation works (www.surreyhillsconservation.co.uk) I have the opportunity to pass that onto others and

that, makes me feel truly grateful. Another new chapter is evolving as I write these words. Along with my family, Joanna and our two children Frankie and Max, we are setting up ‘Surrey Hills Yurts’. We are fortunate to have a small holding of just over 15 acres on the side of Leith Hill in the Heart of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Amongst our organic herd of pedigree Sussex Cattle, Gloucester Old Spot Pigs and varied wildlife, we are putting in six Ashe framed Yurts and a straw bale round house with a Hobbit front door. Here children and adults will be able to learn rural skills including willow sculpting and mammal surveying, whilst acting as a base to explore this world class area of natural and sculpted beauty. – By David Seall Seall Landscapes: 01483 271994 www.seall-landscapes.co.uk www.surreyhillconservation.co.uk

How to plan your kitchen lighting Essential for preparation and cooking, lighting can also be used to create mood and atmosphere at the flick of a switch.

O

ne of the first things you’ll need to consider when planning your new kitchen is the lighting, as electrics and fittings have to be installed at the start of the project, before plastering, decorating and the fitting. It’s an integral part of any scheme and this is your one chance to get it right. The key to a successful scheme lies in layering the effects, so you should try to zone the lighting according to its use working (task), dining and mood (ambient) and creating the wow factor (feature). It’s important to concentrate on all three and consider dimmable solutions for even more flexibility. Installing ceiling lighting can pose some difficulties, but it is possible to illuminate a kitchen without using any ceiling lights. There is a wide range of spotlights, downlighters, uplighters and strips that can be placed either under or on top of kitchen units. It also means you can be more creative, as it’s possible to conceal fixtures and fittings. Every kitchen, no matter how large or small, needs efficient task lighting. This is as much from a safety point of view as anything else. You’ll need direct lighting wherever any food preparation is taking place - worktops, sinks and hobs - to make sure chopping

12 JUNE 2014

and cooking can be done safely and without shadows. Undermounted options are perfect for this and be sure to look for recessed or semi-recessed options, as exposed light fittings will collect grease and dirt more easily. For the hob area, choose an extractor with four or more halogen lights and if the island is to be used for prep, highlight it with pendant lamps combined with recessed downlighters. These should always be controlled on a separate circuit, so make sure you talk to your electrician before any installation takes place.

The latest trend is for easy-to-use sensor-operated products. They’re extremely practical - when preparing food, there’s no need to wash your hands every time you need to flick the

switch, simply wave your hand in front of the sensor. Drawer and cabinet lighting can also be operated on sensors, instantly coming on when the door is opened. Not only do they look great, the lights make it much easier to find that elusive corkscrew or pizza cutter. Open-plan kitchens with a dining area or those with a breakfast bar need a combination of adequate lighting for eating, with softer lighting for after-dinner conversation. Dining tables and island units will benefit from a series of overhead pendant lamps (rise-and-fall versions can be moved up or down when needed) while lamps and wall lights will create a warm glow that sets the mood.

Mood lighting Mood lighting can change the ambience of the kitchen from practical preparation zone to a chill-out or entertaining space. Plinth lighting - especially strip lights around an island unit or breakfast bar gives the illusion of floating furniture, which can create a magical feel at night and is great for wowing guests. If you have a period property or interesting features, such as an exposed brick wall, that you’d like to highlight, consider accent lighting that can be used to focus on a particular area or design element in the room. This is where you have the chance to set your kitchen apart. The LivingAmbiance by Philips is a range of coloured lighting that can be changed to suit your mood. ‘The kitchen is probably the most actively used room in the home,’ says Ashley Smith, consumer lighting marketing manager for Philips, ‘so lighting should be an integral part of its design. Good lighting improves the functionality, appearance and energy efficiency of your kitchen and also impacts on your wellbeing. LivingAmbiance lets you access a whole host of colours and shades of white to create the mood you want - from cool to warm - whether entertaining friends or cooking for the family.’ Sensio’s LED RGB 30W remote control and receiver is another option, as the remote control enables you to create any mood at the touch of a button. Choose from a slow or rapid colour change with a memory function to activate the settings previously used. Other effects include colour-changing back-lit glass splashbacks and light strips beneath the worktop on an island unit.

Do you have a dream kitchen?

Building your dream kitchen is not a luxury; it’s common sense. If your kitchen works well, you’ll find that daily routines will be a breeze and you’ll have the freedom to become more creative in the kitchen

How to achieve a dream kitchen Ask yourself these few key questions before the design phase to ensure the end result is perfect for you. ‘How do I use my kitchen?’ For some of us it will be about entertaining, for others about convenience. For some, the kitchen is the epicentre of the home, whilst for others it should blend inconspicuously into the background. ‘What style speaks to me?’ Is your look sleek minimalist, or is it warm country? Do you want everything hidden from view with counters left clear, or do you prefer a haphazard, informal feel? These choices are very personal. Take the time to collate a portfolio of design ideas (try houzz.com for inspiration) so that you can be clear on what you like, and what you don’t.

How to choose a supplier for your dream kitchen Now it’s time to call in the professionals. Your kitchen supplier should be able to collaborate with you in the final design of your dream kitchen. In order to be confident in your choice of supplier, ask yourself: ‘Are my needs being heard?’ The designer must take your specific needs as the starting point. A dream kitchen will be tailored around you. A ‘best fit’ option will never be as good. ‘Do I have enough choice?’ The kitchen layouts your supplier will 76 JUNE 2014

offer you will need to have all the storage and utility options which you’ve prioritised. If you’re limited to set combinations, it’s unlikely to be a perfect fit. ‘Do they have exciting ideas?’ A clever solution or innovation can give your kitchen an edge that you’ll get a kick out for years to come. Your kitchen supplier should have one or two up their sleeve.

Who should install your dream kitchen? The best way to ensure that your kitchen is properly fitted, is to let the supplier do the job. That way you’ll benefit from their experience, and possibly a guarantee. At Wharfside Furniture, we help our clients achieve their dream kitchen. We design bespoke solid wood kitchens which are hand-crafted in Austria from the finest sustainably-produced European hard woods. SOLID hard woods and then they’re treated with natural oils. Our award-winning designs include the innovative K7 height-adjustable island. Every one of our kitchens is designed to solve problems and enhance living.
