his may be the season for hats, gloves and scarves, but Graham Doubtfire, Tax Partner at Scrutton Bland thinks there are other kinds of wrapping to think about.
What is a tax wrapper? A tax wrapper is a financial planning tool which enables you to protect your investment from a high burden of taxation. e most common kind of wrapper is an ISA, but there are many other types of wrapper available. Combined with an appropriate investment strategy, these can give a significant boost to your savings, but you need to proceed with care to ensure that you have the right product for your circumstances. In many recent cases, we have seen people with very high personal tax rates, who can benefit from using a tax wrapper around bank deposits, stock market or property investments.
An individual example: A person has inherited a large sum but they don’t need the income from the investment immediately as they are still working (or getting an income from another source). ey would like to invest in the stock market, and draw on these savings in retirement or at a time when other income is diminished. Without any kind of tax wrapper they would suffer 32.5% or even 38.1% income tax on the dividends reinvested. By using the appropriate tax wrapper the capital is protected and when they retire and start drawing from the fund any tax is

deferred until that time, which could be at a time when no tax is due.

A JOLLY CHRISTMAS AT THE OAK-TREE SCHOOLS
W
e take a look at the busy Autumn Term’s highlights at the Oak-Tree Group of Schools. ese four local independent schools in the Epping Forest area take pride in the wealth of extra-curricular opportunities they provide in addition to the classroom-based learning, and as well as the normal Christmas Carol Services and fun activities. e programme of events started after half term with another fantastic Oak-Tree annual Fireworks Display, held at Oaklands in Loughton. e evening went with a bang, as around 1000 spectators were entertained with a long and explosive display. Activities such as face painting, biscuit decorating and lucky dips kept the children happy before the main event. e fireworks hat competition had some fantastic entries, and the warm mulled wine was popular with the adults! e Normanhurst Band played an excellent set as background music while the hot dogs and food were served. At Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, senior pupils took part in the annual House Drama competition at Lopping Hall in Loughton to an audience of friends and family. Pupils in each of the four Houses wrote, directed and performed in short plays that were judged by a panel. In the Juniors, the annual nativity saw all children from the new Lower Kindergarten to Year 2 performing to their families. Headmistress Claire Osborn said, “e Senior House Drama showcased the confidence and talents we boast at Braeside. We were delighted with the infant nativity and the girls sang so well to their families. Well done everybody!” At Epping’s Coopersale Hall, the younger children put on some lovely Christmas productions for their families in the School Hall. e audiences were wowed by the performances, especially as some of the children who were dancing and singing were as young as 2½. Around 30 Year 2 children performed at the

annual Epping Christmas Market in the High Street in December. Headmistress Kaye Lovejoy places particular importance on the extra-curricular programme; “Our children are constantly given new experiences as part of our wider curriculum. Singing and performing are particular strengths and it’s pleasing to see their confidence grow”. At Normanhurst School in North Chingford, around 80 children from Lower Kindergarten to Year 2 performed the annual nativity to a large audience of parents and friends. e event was so popular that it had to be three separate performances! Headmistress Claire Osborn says, “e children worked hard with the staff to put together a fantastic show. ey acted and sang confidently and really put us in the Christmas spirit. Performance is a vital part of each child’s development and we provide a range of extra-curricular activities to develop our pupils’ creativity outside the classroom. I’m delighted to see them flourish”. At Loughton’s Oaklands School, activities included a trip to the pantomime, visits from Santa and Christmas parties. Younger children sang in Christmas productions for families, with even the 2½ year olds playing major roles. e Oaklands choir took part in the annual ‘Light up Loughton’ festival at St Mary’s Church to mark the official switching on of the lights. Headmistress Sue Belej says, “Education in the classroom is extremely important, but so too are the opportunities to take part in the many performances that enhance our pupils’ educational experiences. I was so pleased with the quality of our children’s performances”. n

pping Forest often serves people as a place to ‘escape’ and at this time of the year it’s an especially welcome sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of busy high streets and hectic social calendars. Taking a stroll in the woods or enjoying some kind of recreation in the Forest, such as golf or cycling, can be the perfect antidote to the frantic build-up to the festive season. e drop in temperatures needn’t put you off venturing out into the woods; in fact it can be a pleasure returning from a bracing walk and warming up once again with a mug of soup or hot chocolate. For some festive, woodland fun, visit the Epping Forest Frost Fair at e View in Chingford. Over the weekend of Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 December, from 10am-4pm, there will be local craft stalls to browse and the Forest setting will become a traditional festive scene with mulled wine, hot chocolate and tasty seasonal hot food on offer at the pop-up aprés ski terrace. Admission to the event is free. Father Christmas will also be in his historic grotto at Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, a Tudor hunt standing built at the instruction of King Henry VIII. If you didn’t book early enough to get a grotto ticket (grotto tickets usually sell out by the end of October), there is still plenty of fun for all

the family with the ‘activi-ski pass’, a £4 ticket that provides 5 seasonal craft activities, each creating a take home treat. To keep up with Forest events sign-up to receive Forest Focus, Epping Forest’s seasonal, free magazine. e snowy cobbled courtyard will be lined with stalls offering handmade craft items, fine locally-sourced food and a variety of gifts for your family and friends. e naughty elves will be back. Watch out for their antics and make sure you dress warmly for the woodland trail. Can you find the woodland creatures and who has taken their winter hoards? ere will be surprises and stories amongst the trees. In addition there will be seasonal songs and a visit from the Frost Queen on her woodland sleigh. en, once the big day itself is over, where better than to spend some quality, family time, blowing off the festive cobwebs, than Epping Forest. C
hristmas is such a wonderful time of the year. It’s an annual highlight that merges cultural and religious festivities with tradition and joy. at is until we get into the world of shopping; the bombardment of adverts selling us food, gifts, toys, presents and just about everything and anything, which can justify its place at Christmas. e commercial aspect is now in full force, having developed its momentum since September. e John Lewis advert which is rather surprising: Monster Moz hiding under the bed. I think that for most children, they would be frightened to death if a big, grey animal was snoring under their bed and rustling around their bedroom. But I suppose it’s slightly better than an old man looking through a little girl’s bedroom window with his telescope per the 2015 offering. And if analysing the advert, why was the old man sent to the moon? With all the recent allegations, in just two years, an advertisement has become incredibly, passé. M&S Paddington Bear story is rather cute with the nation’s favourite bear helping Santa deliver the presents. eir strapline of ‘Spend It Well’ is open to many interpretations and I’m not sure if they’re referring to time or budget… Either way – still better than that ‘man in the moon’ referred to in the last paragraph. e Aldi advertisement is rather amusing: a love story between two carrots. I like the touch (in the first few seconds) of

Ms. Carrot reading 9 ½ Leeks! Clearly, she’s ready for some romance with Mr. Carrot. However, it never fails to amaze me just how much time and effort is spent by the corporate giants on just one meal – the Christmas Day Fayre. Despite the advertisements displaying tables filled to capacity, I can’t help but think that to consume that amount, would lead to at least indigestion and at worst a heart attack! And of course, an obvious and unwanted weight gain… Heightened pledges for Lose Weight in the 2018 New Year Resolution List and Join the Gym are pencilled in the diary to justify one day’s unbridled gluttonous indulgence. Plus of course the presents. It is so out of control that you feel that unless you have virtually bankrupted yourself, you haven’t given enough. Christmas takes abundance to excess and is so far removed from its religious significance, that it is at times, barely recognisable. Yet despite my sounding a tad humbug, I do enjoy Christmas; sharing the day with family and friends, making a normal sized, home-cooked that everybody can enjoy without feeling nauseous. en the obligatory, post-dinner snooze on the sofa where roast potatoes turn into couch potatoes. n

FIVE WAYS TO BOOST YOUR
RETIREMENT INCOME

ith people living longer in retirement, it’s important to make your pension income go further. Arpit Shah, Director of White Lotus Wealth Ltd, a local Wealth Manager shares some top tips. 1. Keep tax bills to a minimum e way you take benefits from your pension can affect the amount of tax you pay, so it’s important to think carefully before you make any withdrawals. Pension freedoms introduced in 2015 mean that, once you reach the age of 55, you can take as much cash out of your pension as you want. However, taking a big lump sum from your pension could mean you pay more tax, so you should always work out how much tax you will have to pay before you take money out. Usually, 25% of the money is taken as tax free cash with the remainder potentially income taxable. 2. Know Your State Pension e maximum State Pension you can receive under current rules is £159.55 per week. However many people are unaware of their entitlement to state pension. ere is an easy and simple way of gathering this information. You can request a state pension statement either online or by post. e form you need to complete is a BR19 State Pension forecast. is will provide you with the age and anticipated pension payments upon retirement. You may not have fully contributed to National Insurance all your life or perhaps contracted out at some stage. Once you have this vital piece of information you can plan your lifestyle with this in mind. 3. Top up your pension If you’ve still got a few years to go before retirement, you should think about boosting your pension savings now, so that you can benefit from current rates of tax relief and potentially enjoy a higher income when you stop work. You will continue to earn tax relief up to 100% of your relevant earnings.

See if you qualify for higher annuity income If you smoke, drink heavily, or have health problems, then you could qualify for an ‘impaired life annuity’ or ‘enhanced annuity’, which can offer much more income than a standard annuity, as pay-outs reflect your reduced life expectancy. An enhanced annuity pays you a guaranteed income during retirement which is guaranteed for the rest of your life. Even if you think any condition you have is relatively minor, it is always worth finding out whether you could qualify for this type of annuity, as it could provide a substantial boost to your retirement income. 5. Combine your pension pots If you have several pension pots with different providers, it may be a good idea to combine them in one pot. is will make it easier to keep track of your overall savings and estimated income at retirement. ere can be benefits to consolidation as many older-style pensions do not offer access to the new range of pension freedoms. Art teacher Adelaine Frank has a passion to bring art to the fingertips of everyone. e class has the added benefit of tutor Jim Jack, a sculptor and local artist. Both provide one-to-one advice and all the help needed to develop individual artistic skills. Classes are lively and fun Adelaine is also part of Arts Commune in Chingford based at the Pimp Hall Nature Reserve in Kings Road, Chingford. advertising a new art group. She said: “I signed up straight away – it seemed to be just what I was looking for at this time of my life.” Wendy was pretty good at art at school but never got the chance to take it further. A career as a medical secretary, followed by three children, kept Wendy busy. She said: “I have learnt so much, acquired new skills and created artwork I didn’t know I could do. each course provides new ideas and I love Jim’s overview of different artists and their styles. It’s a friendly and happy group.” Wendy has framed many of her pictures and given them to family members. She can be found at home painting pets for friends which are then framed. “Without coming to Adelaine’s Art Class I would never have progressed and now I want to paint all the time.” Jane Wheatley is 68 and lives in Redbridge. She said: “I saw an advert and thought this is something I really should do.” After retiring in 2015 from working in admin special needs with the local authority Jane discovered her artistic talent after joining the Art Class. “I liked art at school and I knew I needed something to fill the void after leaving work.” Jane, a full-time carer for her mother-in-law Rose, who has just turned 100, likes to enjoy her new-found skills and paint at home. “I like creating and love the idea that pictures of mine are hanging on peoples’ walls. anks to Adelaine and Jim my life has been full of colour these last three years and I’ve made some lovely friends too.” n
Adelaine says “Art is definitely for everyone and I am delighted as these stories show how special it can be, especially in later life. Don’t be lonely, come and find out more.”

very child has a dream. Whether it’s for a certain present at Christmas, a career or family aspiration, to feel safe, fed and educated. Ash Parmar of Smile Design by Ash in Chigwell and who is also the Chairman of the Food For Life Vrindavan (FFLV) UK together with the charity’s trustees, invited over 200 guests to acknowledge their support of the charity. e attendees were thanked for their contribution with a courtesy three course, delicious Indian, vegetarian meal. Whether professionally or financially, the support has helped to facilitate girls from the poorest communities in India, with food, safety, security, medical support and an education to improve their long-term destiny and potential. e famous and highly-regarded actor and also a trustee. Ravin J Ganatra, welcomed the guests. Ash Parmar then explained how in local villages of Vrindavan, girls live in dire circumstances. rough the message delivered by the charity, communities are beginning to appreciate the importance of an education which could lead to a professional, career trajectory instead of an early child marriage which is more commonplace despite its illegality. e charity’s founder Rupa Ragunath Das gave a heart-warming presentation regarding progress, future plans and especially, how they

are looking to accommodate the 500 girls currently on a waiting list… On a different note and closer to home and locally, most boys have different dreams and plans. In their heart, despite practical ideas to go into medicine, law, banking, accountancy or education, they secretly dream of becoming a footballer, preferably Premier League and in the national team. Most take the ability to kick a ball for granted and despite abilities, dreams have no limit yet one young man had to fight his own health battles before playing football could become a reality: Dillon Bhambra. When he was born, he suffered with a reflux issue which affected his kidney function. is necessitated the first twelve months of his life on antibiotics. In addition, he also has chronic asthma and eczema… But this never stopped his ambition or drive. As he become more confident of managing his health issues, he simultaneously developed his sporting talents and plays basketball, rugby and cross-country running however his true and outstanding talent lies with football. He is currently involved in the Echo Football League (youth level) and is already demonstrating a drive and enthusiasm that bodes well for future success… Watch this space and for any football scouts reading this magazine – Dillon Bhambra! n

THE ABAMA, TENERIFE Our Senior Travel Consultant, Sabrina, has been in the travel industry for many years and travelled extensively for both business and pleasure. Let’s hear from Sabrina about her work trip to The Abama, Tenerife to gain first hand knowledge about the destination and hotel to enable us to knowingly sell with confidence to our clients. Tenerife is one of my favourite destinations which I have visited several times over the last 20 years, so I was very excited to return. I was even more excited to have the Ritz Carlton Abama as my home for a 3-night break. A touch of luxury which I had not seen in Tenerife before. This stunning hotel is situated on a cliff top in the charming resort of Guia De Isora. With commanding views over the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby island of La Gomera, you cannot want for a better view. It is away from the hustle and bustle of the mass tourist resorts which makes it an ideal location to relax and unwind. Although if you fancy going out of the resort, the main resort of Costa Adeje is only 15 minutes away in a taxi. The Hotel is divided into two parts, the ‘Citadel’ and the ‘Villas’. The Citadel is the heart of the resort and is where most of the 12 bars and restaurants (2 of which are Michelin star) are located along with the Spa, the Persian Gardens, ornamental lakes and the family and main swimming pools. For a touch of extra luxury, the Villas comprise of 28 rooms and suites and are in rows which run down the hillside on the way to the beach. Each row boasts their own large pool that is shared by the villa guests only. One of these rows is where the Tagor Villas are
situated, and this is where I was fortunate enough to be staying. On arrival at the hotel I was met and taken straight to my room in the Tagor Villas by a waiting chauffeur-driven golf buggy. Check in was in the comfort of my very spacious and stylishly-designed room. Parked outside was my very own golf buggy which I had at my disposal throughout my stay. Driving around the resort was great fun. Having 2 young children of my own, the chance to have a leisurely breakfast in the adults only “El Mirador” restaurant whilst overlooking the ocean and sitting around the beautiful pool with concierge service was pure bliss. A perfect retreat for adults. That said, I will definitely be returning with my family on my next visit. The hotel is genuinely welcoming to families. They offer a fantastic kids club which is open daily with an array of super activities from wildlife to astronomy, from the latest technology to sustainability. The family pool is perfect for young families with an abundance of sunbeds and of course umbrellas. The little train that runs down to the beautiful beach is a thrill for children. The resort also offers a par73- championship golf course, stunning Atlantic Ocean views from nearly all of its 18 holes, the golf course at The Ritz-Carlton, Abama is considered one of the toughest courses in all of Spain and has often been described as the “Augusta of Europe”. The resort’s world-class tennis facilities, featuring seven tennis courts and the Annabel Croft Academy, provides the ultimate tennis break. Players of every level and age are invited to take lessons that are available for the whole family, groups, couples and individuals offering a wide range of possibilities. One of the highlights of the holiday was a whale watching trip. Within 10 minutes of setting off we had Pilot whales with their babies swimming alongside us. We were also treated to a visit by some of the local dolphins. A truly memorable experience. If you haven’t already stayed at this hotel, why not add this to your holiday list. any people have never noticed these vertical lines on their neck (also known as "Turkey Neck"). ese lines appear more prominent as we age. If you clench your teeth and smile in front of the mirror you maybe able to see them. Most of the time they are barely noticeable, however in a few cases, they can cause a great deal of concern to patients. What causes the lines I hear people asking? Please let me explain. ere is a very thin muscle around the front of the neck called the platysma muscle. is muscle spans from the collar bone and the upper chest and extends up to the jawline (as you can see from the two anatomical diagrams). As we age the platysma muscle can separate causing bands to form, resulting in thick vertical lines, fine horizontal lines and sagging
appearance as shown in the ‘before’ picture. With a very simple and quick procedure, we can relax these bands giving an incredible result as you can see in the pictures here. e vertical bands have completely disappeared and the fine creases in the skin of the neck have relaxed, producing a more smoother look. We can also see the jawline is more defined, again giving a more youthful appearance. ese effects usually last an average of 4-6 months, or longer in some patients, and can really make a difference in our overall appearance by rejuvenating the neck and jawline. n

I chose to go through the accreditation process with Save Face as I wanted to be recognised for my promotion of patient safety, working to achieve excellence and help with regulation of the aesthetic industry. Regulators such as Save Face ensure you are protected in a number of ways. This time, Pixers proposes floral designs in a new version - not as a perfect addition to the interior, but as a mainstay in the interiors following the principles of maximalism.
