WEDDING GUIDE

Uniquely

memorable 2017 weddings are going to be more fun and adventurous than ever before.

B

rides and Grooms have been taking inspiration from many sources like Pinterest, bridal magasines and celebrity celebrations and weddings, meaning that the sky’s the limit in terms of making your wedding memorable and unique for you and your guests.

What’s new for 2017 • Vintage themes are huge this year. Chairs and tables in mismatched designs creating a natural, and un-stuffy feel with less formal seating plans, with families opting for fun and informality with rows of tables, to buffet style seating where your guests choose where they sit, and stand. The vintage look with its relaxed attitude is a trend to look at closely. • Foods with a difference. Having a different food offering is fun, unexpected and a real treat for your guests; whether you want a buffet style meal with easy and simple foods, hot or cold or a mixture of both, to bbq’s, canapés and more. The trends we’re seeing are moving away from the traditional wedding breakfast in favour of wood fired pizzas, fish and chips , and candy floss machines. The key is to keep your guests full of food and drink for the duration of the day. • Photography – how about drone photographers who capture a completely different view of your event? What about mixing this new innovative style with your traditional bridal party and friends and family photos? Picture Credit Heni Flourie Photography.

20 FEBRUARY 2017

• Event & Wedding Management. We provide a range of tailor made event management options. Having worked with so many brides and grooms, we know what’s important in the final days and weeks of preparation. Simplicity is the key. Keep suppliers to the minimum to reduce stress on the run up to the wedding, and allow a professional to take charge. It needn’t cost the earth.

Tips for 2017 • Take recommendations when they are offered; the suppliers that you deal with will have a wealth of experience and will happily point you in the right direction, so use their expertise! • Use suppliers who have worked together before. If your suppliers know each other, they’ll work well together and communicate between themselves, making your life easier. • Book early, for weddings in peak season. This is key to securing the items you require, and avoid disappointment. THE DETAILS Marlow Marquees Ltd 01494 813353 info@marlowmarquees.co.uk www.marlowmarquees.co.uk

Exquisite elegance in the making

B

We speak to Lesley Cutler, designer and creator of made to measure wedding dresses, evening and occasion wear.

ased in her studio in Milton Keynes, Lesley has a history steeped in design and creation of beautiful, high end bespoke wedding and occasion wear at some of the top design houses. “I studied for 4 years at The London College of Fashion, before working for Norman Hartnell in the couture workroom (designer and creator of the Queens wedding dress). Moving to Windsmoor in London I became an Assistant Pattern Cutter, gaining valuable tailoring expertise.” As a promotion Lesley moved to Aquascutum as Pattern Cutter. “During my time here I worked on Margaret Thatcher’s - the then current Prime Minister ” wardrobe. Lesley gained experience in various design houses, including Ronald Joyce – the largest award winning bridal-wear manufacturer at the time, Jenny Packham and Elizabeth Emanuel where Lesley ran the workroom and fitted the clients. Her creations have been worn by Royalty, famous singers, public figures and TV personalities. Since starting her own business in 1994, Lesley tells us that things have changed dramatically. “Initially a bespoke wedding dress service, and now it has evolved to include Mothers of both Bride and Groom” says Lesley. “Currently the trend is for the ‘mothers’ to blend and co-ordinate with the bridal party so there’s a cohesive colour palette or theme. Mothers often like me to supply the matching accessories too, which can be the bag, jewellery and head-piece

24 FEBRUARY 2017

– a real one stop shop for them making it so simple and yet exactly what they are looking for”. Lesley works with clients of all ages – and prides herself on ensuring that everything is age appropriate, exactly what they are looking for. “The current colour trend for mature brides is buttermilk with ivory lace overlaid. This is very striking and photogenic” says Lesley. Recently Lesley designed a trouser bridal outfit for a wedding overseas –“voluminous palazzo pants made from a very heavy fluid silk crepe – they hung like a skirt and were massively flared at the bottom” Lesley is starting to see more requests for ‘up-cycling’. One client had their daughter christened in St Pauls Cathedral. “It was really important to them that the Christening gown came from her wedding dress whilst keeping the original dress intact”. Lesley explains that Brides are starting to request that their dress is made from the fabric of their Mothers pre-loved gown. “Such lovely sentiment and an honour to be working with a beloved piece to create yet another stunning, current gown”. As well as traditional bridal wear, Lesley creates bespoke evening gowns. These have been worn at dance competitions and glittering charity balls. “I use the same designer silk fabrics as I used when I worked with Elizabeth Emmanuel. The exquisite fabric creates the dream, made to measure, couture experience” . THE DETAILS Tel: 01908 690899 www.lesleycutlerbridalwear.co.uk Appointments are available Monday to Friday from 8.30 am, Tuesday & Thursday evenings. Saturday appointments lasting 90 mins from 11.00 am.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

We’ve been here before Matthew Hilton-Dennis is Head of English at Merchant Taylors’ School, talks about teaching English at a time of dramatic political change.

A

s a teacher, I often find myself wondering on the extent I should let the real world into my classroom. When modern life becomes precarious and uncertain, it can feel comforting to retreat behind the shield of canonical texts. Here things matter but in an environment controlled by the reader or by the teacher. What consequences there are happen to somebody else, who generally lived a long time ago and is in most cases made up. But as is so often the case with texts that transcend their own place and time, they take one look at modern life and tell the reader we’ve been here before. Over and over again. So it is that I have found myself watching the news over the last seven months as though it were a kind of vaudeville theatre, a series of separate comic acts on both sides of the Atlantic. Pantomime sometimes appears a better analogy. Regardless of genre, I feel the odd sensation of thrill and despair as I watch people we love to hate declaim and strut and fret their hour upon the stage. They say they represent forgotten peoples in 21st Century societies; this is populism in action; in a reluctant way I am forced to agree this is how it seems. I feel like I have seen this before.

And where? Dickens with my Year 10 class first leaps to mind. I think of the exploited factory workers in Hard Times¬ whose lungs are full of coal fumes and snowy flakes of cotton dust. I see them standing before Slackbridge, the professional agitator paid for by the trade unions to incite industrial action against their cruel masters. Slackbridge fashions himself as one of them, his cry of anger and outrage is their cry. But the truth is he comes to take their voices away with him and use them for an ulterior purpose. Sound familiar? And why are these long-suffering workers so susceptible to what effectively amounts to a political hijacking? Because their severely limited education has failed to instruct them in the art of critical thinking. They have never dreamed it possible of actually calling the establishment to account. Unsurprising then that they fall for the first agent provocateur who comes their way: a man whom Dickens reminds the reader is in no way above the humble ‘hands’ in anything (and certainly not in morality or looks) other than the few inches of stage upon which he stands. Listening to Nick Clegg recently at a Merchant Taylors’ school trip to the Cheltenham Literary Festival, I was inspired by his clarion call to rediscover the middle ground in British politics, not so much as a political stance but as a place where peoples of all persuasion can gather, voice their opinion and if so inclined change their mind. This sounds sensible and intelligent. The grand hope was for the Internet to become this kind of place, but the reality is that to enter into any number of different online chat rooms is to find what Clegg describes as ‘people furiously agreeing with each other’. So I look to my English classroom instead as a liminal space, one which teeters between the norm and the subversive and is always critically reflective of ideas put forward by the texts we study and by the students themselves. It seems to me that anyone who emerges from this kind of discursive culture is properly equipped to withstand today’s 24-hour supply of constant information, the Orwellian Post-Truth New Speak world of Brexit and Trump, and make their own judgement. INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

St Helen’s Achieves Highest ISI Inspection Rating St Helen’s School Northwood has been given an excellent report by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) following their inspection visit in November. The quality of the pupils’ achievements and the quality of the pupils’ personal development were both found to be ‘excellent’ by the ISI inspectors, which are the highest possible judgements under the recently-revised criteria for the inspection of independent schools.

T

he inspection report finds that the ‘Pupils’ attitudes to learning are exceptional. They enjoy taking responsibility for their own work and are highly motivated to learn.’ By the time the students reach the Sixth Form ‘A-Level progress is high in relation to the average for pupils of similar abilities’. The ISI inspectors fully recognised that St Helen’s places exceptional academic achievement for its pupils at the centre of its ambitious vision: ‘The academic success of pupils is a key aim of the school and the leadership has actively promoted independent learning and challenge. This has been

34 FEBRUARY 2017

most successfully implemented by the teaching staff and is one of the strongest factors contributing to the pupils’ academic successes.’ Pastoral care at St Helen’s was recognised as being a particular strength, with inspectors finding that ‘The school makes an exceptional pastoral commitment to its pupils and this supports their strong progress.’ The girls, too were singled out for praise by inspectors for their exemplary attitudes to their learning, commenting in their report that: ‘Pupils are highly motivated, curious, enjoy learning and are keen to take full responsibility for the quality of their work.’ St Helen’s was particularly praised for promoting social responsibility among the pupils. Inspectors commented that ‘pupils play a full and active part in the local, national and global community, and show high levels of commitment to their charity work and service to others.’ The inspectors were also impressed by the sense of community which they found at St Helen’s, commenting ‘Pupils are exceptionally accepting of others. They respect their peers, valuing the diversity of faiths, cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities within their school and they form friendships without regard to these differences.’ Headmistress Dr Mary Short commented, ‘We are delighted to receive such an outstanding report which confirms the impressive progress we have made towards achieving our vision of becoming north London’s exceptional girls’ school. St Helen’s girls are confident, ambitious and happy: they achieve highly in everything they do, and it is wonderful that the inspectors saw these qualities shining through at every stage of the School when they visited us.’

LITERATURE

“I say!” a stranger bellowed across the dinner table, “there is NO better writer of novels than him!”. I blushed slightly at the interjection, realising that a common love of an author meant a new friend and endless conversation. Sorry, perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself. When we tell stories we should really begin at the beginning

I

t was one of those still, frozen evenings you get in the winter, when you can hear a moth clear its throat a mile away. Dinner parties this time of year can be awfully tiresome, but I struck up conversation with a blonde to my left who, we quickly found, shared my admiration for Jane Gardam’s first book A Long Way From Verona. We talked for a while about the brilliant protagonist, Jessica Vye, and her gumptious love of literature and adventure. I chanced that if she had enjoyed Gardham, “you might care to try William Maxwell”, at which point the bellow came... “William Maxwell! I say!”, and he continued as outlined earlier. The purpose of this anecdote, for - although I dare say I nearly lost you there - it does have a purpose, is to tell you that I read a novel called So Long, See You Tomorrow last month and it is the most beautiful and touchingly melancholic book I’ve ever read. It is rare to be able to read a classic novel that is so easy to get into and that you can read in one evening - if you have not yet read it I envy you, for you have a great treat ahead. And if reading excellent novels isn’t enough to keep you warm in February, then we have a terrific lineup of events for your delectation. We start with the visit of bookshop favourite and Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge on February 15th. Over the last three years he has shed eleven stone without having to eat food he didn’t enjoy, and he shares how he did this in his new cookbook Dopamine Diet. Do join us to learn some fabulous new recipes that can be shared with friends and family – and the best news is that you don’t have to calorie count.

The very next evening we are thrilled to be joined by the renowned heart surgeon Professor Stephen Westaby. Over a long career Professor Westaby has performed over 11,000 heart operations for the NHS, and his new memoir Fragile Lives is a moving and captivating testament to his life’s work. The book offers an exceptional insight into the exhilarating and sometimes tragic world of heart surgery, and how it feels to hold someone’s life in your hands. Rounding off the month we are delighted to be visited upon by the multi-talented Giovanna Fletcher, whose new book Happy Mum, Happy Baby is a wonderfully uplifting story of motherhood. Penned by the Celebrity Mum of the Year and phenomenally popular vlogger, author, TV presenter and actress this is sure to be terrifically popular so do get a ticket before they go!

The final piece in the

JIGSAW Making the decision to purchase a used car is simple – knowing where to go to get the best deal, service, quality is perhaps a harder choice to make.

S

upermarkets, auctions, independent dealers, private sale or multi-national group - there really are numerous routes that you can choose to source your next used car. With most of them comes the question of trust, quality, price, finance, provenance, warranty and onward running costs, but research still reinforces above all the most important part is the person you buy from. The final piece in the jigsaw, the best your garage has to offer, the top of his game, the used car salesman. Last time you bought a used car did you deal with the ‘Arthur Daley’ type, was it the young fresh faced junior, maybe the old dog with a shiny suit or the shifty one that smells of cigarettes that you wouldn’t trust to make you a coffee let alone prepare your next family car? They may have all been consummate professionals with years of experience and part of an extremely successful organisation but ask yourself another question, were they on commission? Therefore; did you buy absolutely the car for you, did you really get the finance deal that suited your budget, was everything right about the deal overall, was the warranty he gave you the right “minimum” 12 months that should be provided by a car retailer and did he embarrass you by trying to sell you the ad-ons his boss will pay him most for; the credit protection, the paint work cover, the accessories and the GAP insurance….? If this is reminiscent of your last purchase experience and you prefer one without all that fuss, you may not need to shop that far away next time, why?

Because the last time I bought a used car it was from a dealer that is a third generation local family firm, two of which still work 6 days a week in the business, has 100 local people working within it, don’t pay any staff a penny in commission to sell you a car, promise to provide you a minimum 12 months (in most cases more) warranty on any used cars and will not try to sell you the extras you probably don’t want. This place is Platts Motor company, they are located in Wooburn Moor on the A40 just before Beaconsfield and also on West Street Marlow. As a very satisfied customer I would definitely recommend you do your best to speak to them next time you are thinking of changing your car, oh, and they also have very nice coffee. T

he history of forced rhubarb is an interesting tale of fate turning this delicious crop into a great industry. A happy accident in the Chelsea physic garden in 1817, where during the depths of winter, workmen digging a trench, accidentally covered some rhubarb crowns with soil. Uncovering those weeks later, they discovered tiny tender pink shoots of rhubarb peeping through. This is how the process of blanching the stalks began and some growers moved there crop indoors. Further north, in Yorkshire, this method expanded swiftly with large sheds being erected to house the crop. Soon 200 tonnes were taken every week, by train, during the short winter season, to the London markets, to meet demand. With the romance of Valentine’s in air this pretty pink trifle makes a perfect dessert for that special loved one.

Forced Yorkshire Rhubarb and Vanilla Trifle with Almonds serves 4

Ingredients: Rhubarb Jelly 450g fresh rhubarb - peeled and cut 1 tbsp. rhubarb conserve 1 tbsp. of rhubarb syrup 2 leaves of leaf gelatine Fresh Egg Custard 6 free range egg yolks 1 level tbsp. caster sugar 250ml milk 50ml double cream 1 vanilla pod 50g flaked almonds 75ml rhubarb liqueur 250g quality lemon sponge or Madeira cake Method: Rhubarb Jelly 1. In a heavy bottomed pan, place the rhubarb (reserve a little for decoration), the conserve and the rhubarb syrup. Heat gently for 2- 3 minutes to lightly poach the rhubarb. 2. Strain through a sieve to separate the juice from the fruit. 3. Soak the gelatine in a little cold water until soft and then add to hot rhubarb juice. Stir until dissolved. 4. Place your cooled rhubarb at the bottom of 4 tumbler/sundae glass dishes, then just cover with your liquid jelly mixture. Place into the fridge to set. Fresh Egg Custard 1. Lightly whisk your egg yolks and sugar together. 2. Split the vanilla pod and scrape out the seeds with a sharp knife. 3. Heat the milk and cream in a pan together with the split vanilla pod and its seeds to near boiling. 4. Add a little of the hot milk and cream to the egg yolks, whisk together and then add back into the pan with the remaining milk cream mixture. 5. Continue to cook on a very low heat, gently whisking all the time, until the custard coats the back of your spoon. Allow to cool and then remove the unwanted vanilla pod. 6. Lightly toast the flaked almonds in a pan with a little butter. 7. Cut the lemon sponge into small cubes and drizzle with the rhubarb liqueur. Place the soaked sponge on top of the rhubarb in the glass dishes. 8. Add a scattering of your toasted flaked almonds. Then add a layer of the cooled custard. To serve Whip a little extra double cream, place a spoonful in the centre of each glass and decorate with fresh poached rhubarb.

Aviation’s best kept

SECRET Gliding - surfing on air in mountain wave

I

f you live near a gliding site you might have seen gliders launching and landing, but most people have no idea what glider pilots get up to in between, in their sleek white sailplanes slipping silently from cloud to cloud. Most clubs have an active cross country scene, with pilots flying long distances – 300km or more – on a good day. They organise competitions where pilots race round a set ‘task’. And for their holidays, pilots go on ‘expeditions’ to other clubs to experience different types of flying. Booker Gliding Club, based at Wycombe Air Park, organises two or three expeditions every year. One long-standing favourite is to Aboyne in Aberdeenshire, where the main attraction is the opportunity to fly in mountain wave to 15,000ft or more. There is nothing to beat the sensation of silky smooth wave lift, climbing up past banks of cloud until the coast can be seen, the sea glinting in the sun. It’s hard to explain to those who haven’t experienced it, though the photos can be stunning. Of course the weather doesn’t always co-operate, the wind has to be blowing across mountains to produce that magical wave effect, but at Aboyne there are mountains in every direction apart

from due east. If there is no wave then there is thermal soaring – climbing in up-currents of warm air – or ridge running – always something to enjoy. And for the occasional rest day the area offers plenty of attractions – walking, fishing, golf, horse-riding, cycling, or visits to castles and distilleries. 48 FEBRUARY 2017

Expeditions are a great way to get to know fellow club members, and to hone flying skills in different environments under expert guidance. Even pre-solo pilots can enjoy these trips as the club always takes along a couple of two seat gliders. It’s always fun to share the experience with someone. Gliding is a sport for all (and there is much more to it than expeditions). Women can compete on equal terms with men and pilots of all ages can take part. Booker Gliding Club is located near High Wycombe. The club is open all the year round and offers a range of training options from holiday courses to a Get Your Solo package and trial lessons. All training is in dual control gliders with British Gliding Association qualified instructors. THE DETAILS For further information visit www.bookergliding.co.uk or just drop in for a chat.

WYCOMBE MUSEUM Have you ever wondered what it is like to volunteer in a museum? Museum Director: Hannah Ellams shares all to Life Magazine:

M

y first volunteering experience was as an Archaeologist volunteer lying on the floor of Gloucestershire Cathedral day after day drawing Medieval floor tiles. It was the middle of winter and very cold. This is when I realised I didn’t want to be an Archaeologist even if Time Team did look exciting from the warmth of my sofa and so I started volunteering in museums instead. Since then I have fallen in love with both volunteering and working in museums; the visitors, the experience of working with objects and the stories that can be told through them. I have not only volunteered myself, but also supported volunteers in museums. My story is not unique as we often meet young people looking for volunteering opportunities to gain experience in museums. Volunteering is extremely valuable both for the organisation and for any age volunteer. It can create new social connections at a time when retirement or other circumstances have meant that friendship groups have become smaller. One of my volunteers started volunteering after he had been the main carer to his wife for many years. He was over 70 years of age when he started and he has volunteered daily from then on as he loved meeting so many new people. Wycombe Museum relies heavily on volunteers and it would be extremely hard to survive without them. The museum has volunteers in many roles including café, shop, photography, collection enquiries, administration, maintenance, learning, crafts activities and events. Some of the volunteers have been with the museum for over 18 years and some only 8 weeks.

The unmarried

TRUTH

To marry or not to marry? That is the question!

B

ut all you need is love, right? Well, yes. And, not quite. When two people are living together as an unmarried couple (cohabitees), as far as the law is concerned, they are two individuals without any matrimonial or financial obligation towards one another. No financial obligation to each other? No. Not in the eyes of the law. So let’s say for 9 years Adam and Eve live together (to the outside World) as if married. But they are not married. They are cohabitees. For various historical reasons, Adam owns the property they live in and pays the mortgage and Eve makes a 50% contribution to the household by buying all of the food and paying all of the bills. As an unmarried couple, if they were to separate Adam would retain his property and Eve would have little or no claim or rights over it whatsoever. This would be the case even if they had a child, and even if Eve’s 50% contribution to bills and food was the only thing enabling Adam to afford the mortgage in the first place. But what if they were married? A matrimonial court has the power to divide the equity in a family home as it thinks fair. However, this is not available to unmarried cohabitees. Is Eve not Adam’s Common Law Wife? There is an often heard phrase: “Common law spouse”. But there is absolutely no such thing in the eyes of the law. No matter how long two people have been together. There are no common law wives and no common law husbands. What is Adam’s financial obligation to his child if they are unmarried? If Adam and Eve are unmarried and have a child, then Adam has an obligation to maintain that child if he has ‘parental responsibility’.

52 FEBRUARY 2017

On what basis would he have parental responsibility? In the following ways: 1) by a formal agreement with Eve which requires registration; 2) by a Court Order; 3) if Adam is named on the child’s birth certificate; or 4) if Adam is married to Eve when the child is born. So couples should either marry or risk financial unfairness on separation? Not quite. Couples can enter into a cohabitation agreement. What is a Cohabitation Agreement? Couples that do not intend to marry can draw up a cohabitation agreement. This agreement (which should be drafted by a Solicitor) will record who owns what from the outset. It will also protect the weaker party on separation by effectively introducing provisions similar to the laws of marriage to deal with any possible separation of the cohabitees. And that is the unmarried truth. THE DETAILS Bernadett Noble is a Solicitor at Kidd Rapinet Solicitors, Slough and can be contacted at: bnoble@kiddrapinet.co.uk

Beautifully

EXPRESSIVE On Saturday 25th February, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s exceptional Principal Clarinet, Katherine Lacy, will be performing Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto at the High Wycombe Swan. We met with her and asked her a few questions.

What inspired you to become a musician as a child? My parents were involved in entertainment themselves and there were always classical music records on at home when I was growing up. One of my dad’s favourites was Jack Brymer playing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto and I’m sure that it must have been that that drew me to the sound of the clarinet. To think that I’m now in some way following in Jack Brymer’s footsteps (he was the RPO’s Principal Clarinet 1947-1963) is amazing! What was the first recording you ever bought? The first recording I ever bought with my own money would have probably been a Bon Jovi album. I used to be absolutely obsessed with them as a teenager! What do you listen to in your spare time? In the car it’s Radio 4 and when I’m at home cooking or chilling out I love listening to music from the Big Band era, as well as anything from Cuba/South America. I used to do a bit of Salsa dancing and always find music from that part of the world completely uplifting. And you can’t beat a bit of Stevie Wonder! What makes Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto so special? In my opinion Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto is one of the best pieces, if not THE best piece for any woodwind instrument ever written. From an audience point of view, it’s simply full of great tunes and takes you through so many different characters and emotions, all in less than half an hour! From a clarinettist’s perspective, it’s absolutely staggering what Mozart achieved with this piece, compared to anything that had previously been written for the instrument – it

58 FEBRUARY 2017

spans nearly four octaves, is incredibly virtuosic and contains the most beautifully expressive phrases you could ever hope to play. What advice would you offer to any young, aspiring musicians? You just never know what opportunities might come your way and you need to be ready for them! You will be constantly told how hard it is to succeed as a musician and it is true that competition is fierce and even if you make it, it’s certainly not an easy life but I would say that if you REALLY want it and are prepared to work your socks off, go for it! You won’t know unless you try! THE DETAILS Saturday 25 February, 7.30pm at the High Wycombe Swan Tickets range from £18.50 to £35, with subscription and group discounts available. Royal Albert Hall private box

on sale for £2.5million A 12-seat private box on the Grand Tier at the world-famous Royal Albert Hall, close to where the Royal Family sit when attending events, has gone on sale for £2.5million.

T

he Grade I listed Royal Albert is the UK’s busiest and most beloved venue with a capacity of up to 5,272 seats, including 1276 owned by private individuals and corporate entities. Its long history with the royal family stretches back to its opening in 1871 by Queen Victoria, who named it after her late husband and acquired 20 boxes on the Grand Tier. The box is on the western side of the auditorium and has approximately 849 years remaining on its lease. One could commonly describe the Grand Tier as the first balcony. The owners will have prime viewing to enjoy hundreds of performances, with nearly 400 events this year alone. It is best-known for hosting the annual BBC Proms, an eight-week summer festival of music. Other events

60 FEBRUARY 2017

include the Baftas, the BBC Proms, Titanic Live and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s The Music of Bond. Seat holders are entitled to view around two-thirds of the performances during the year. In purchasing the box, the owner will automatically receive a membership to the Corporation of the Halls of Arts and Science, making them responsible for electing the Hall’s president and council and upholding historic traditions. They will also become a member of the Corporation of the Hall of Arts and Science which helps to operate the South Kensington building. Agents Harrods Estates said it was the first time such a box had come on the market in almost a decade and there had "already been a bit of interest" Nicholas Shaw, sales manager of Harrods Estates Kensington who are marketing the box, said. “This Grand Tier box at the Royal Albert Hall is a real generational purchase. It is ideal for entertaining, with its 12 seats, and provides enviable views over the main stage and auditorium. We have witnessed these boxes sell previously to the true lovers of the arts and this time should be no different.” A five-seat box situated on the second tier, whose previous owners included Earl Spencer and the Duke of Devonshire, went on sale in 2011 for £550,000.

Grosvenor family in the 19th century, Eaton Square includes a mix of grand houses and apartments behind Grade II listed white stucco facades overlooking 2.5 hectares of private garden squares, making it one of the most desirable addresses in the capital. With upmarket and fashionable areas close by, including Knightsbridge, Sloane Street and Chelsea, Eaton Square has attracted many famous residents over the years, including former Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain, Stanley Baldwin and Margaret Thatcher, and former James Bond stars Sean Connery and Roger Moore. Such is the pull of Eaton Square that the average house price is over three times more than the costliest street in the South East; Camp End Road in Weybridge, which has an average price of £5,164,000. Andrew Mason, mortgage director at Lloyds Bank, says: "Eaton Square, and prime central locations such as Westminster, and Kensington and Chelsea, have established reputations as exclusive addresses. Not only do these streets possess a rich historical legacy, but properties located there are some of the most prestigious in the world and are close to superb local amenities in Knightsbridge, Sloane Street and Chelsea, as well as the capital’s business and entertainment districts."

Get Ready for the UK’s Most Exciting Theme Park

From Bear Grylls adrenalin adventures to pampering spa treatments on one site Forget Disney or Universal. Post Brexit, stay-cations are the new normal. And the 2017 professional family expects a lot more from their leisure time. Our appetite for adventure is ravenous. We need an escape from the pressures of work and school. Hand-in-hand is a desire for holistic health and the inner peace it brings. Using the family holiday as a time of strengthening relationships, even healing rifts brought on by the relentless stress of everyday life.

I

s it asking too much to achieve both goals during one holiday? Not any more. The UK’s most exciting new theme park in a generation has just been launched. Set in 485 acres of the beautiful Afan Valley in South Wales, this new concept combines the beauty of hills and forests with the accessibility that comes with being just ten minutes from the M4. Already in the top ten global venues for mountain biking, the area’s reputation for adventure is about to explode. The park will feature 40 adrenalin-fuelled activities designed by the Bear Grylls Survival Academy. Names like Sheer Drop, Leap of Faith and Canyon Crossing give you a flavour. Or you can spend the day in the water slides and plunge pools of the aquatic centre, cycle or ramble round the mountains and valleys or undergo extreme pampering in the 5 star spa. When the day’s action is done, the Central Hub area will come alive with street parties, live music, parades and a tough decision on whether to eat out in one of the restaurants or have a family dinner in the luxury lodge. Ah, yes,

66 FEBRUARY 2017

the lodges. Did I mention that you can own the cabin you stay in, with all the facilities you’d expect in a permanent holiday home? One to four bedrooms, fully fitted kitchen, utility room, en-suite master bedroom, hot tub and decking. And a 50 year warranty, five times as long as you get on a new brick-and-mortar property. As a lodge owner you receive a whopping 8% per annum rental income and 14 days of family use in this year-round resort. Lodges range from £149,000 to £259,000, with a 50% initial deposit, 25% in August 2017 and the balance due when your lodge is delivered in late 2018/early 2019. The 8% payments start as soon as your deposit and paperwork is received, reducing the amount of the final payment. The team behind this landmark project have just pulled off a major coup. They’ve recruited as their new chairman Peter Moore OBE, the former Managing Director of Center Parcs and Marketing Director of Alton Towers. Here’s what Peter has to say about this unique development “It's an exciting concept, with many similarities to, yet very different from Center Parcs, in its core offer. It does, however, require a similar skillset to turn it into an exciting guest experience and having done it before, I am convinced an offer of this type is absolutely right for the marketplace.” Reservations are now being taken for the first phase of the project, with some excellent plots near the Central Hub being snapped up by families who want to combine the unique experience of regular retreats to the countryside with an investment that pays passive income for years to come. Elite Investor Club can provide you with full information and access to the episode of Sky TV’s Make Your Money Work programme in which the project is featured. Modernist photography from The Sir Elton John Collection

Tate Modern, Until 7th May 2017 Open daily 10am – 6pm and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday

Tate Modern presents a major new exhibition, drawn from one of the world’s greatest private collections of photography.

T

his unrivalled selection of classic modernist images from the 1920s to the 1950s features almost 200 works from more than 60 artists, including seminal figures such as Berenice Abbott, André Kertész, Man Ray, Alexandr Rodchenko and Edward Steichen among many others. The exhibition consists entirely of rare vintage prints, all created by the artists themselves, offering a unique opportunity to see remarkable works up close. The quality and depth of the collection allows the exhibition to tell the story of modernist photography in this way for the first time in the UK. It also marks the beginning of a long term relationship between Tate and The Sir Elton John Collection, as part of which Sir Elton and David Furnish have agreed to give important works to the nation. Featuring portraits of great cultural figures of the 20th century, including Georgia O’Keeffe by Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston by Tina Modotti, Jean Cocteau by Berenice Abbott and Igor

68 FEBRUARY 2017

Stravinsky by Edward Weston, the exhibition gives insight into the relationships and inner circles of the avant-garde. An incredible group of Man Ray portraits are exhibited together for the first time, having been brought together by Sir Elton John over the past 25 years, depicting key surrealist figures such as Andre Breton and Max Ernst alongside artists including Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar. As life underwent rapid changes in the 20th century, photography offered a new means to communicate and represent the world. Alexandr Rodchenko, László Moholy-Nagy and Margaret Bourke-White employed the ‘worm’s eye’ and ‘bird’s eye’ views to create new perspectives of the modern metropolis - techniques associated with constructivism and the Bauhaus. A dedicated section of the exhibition looks at the new approaches that emerged in capturing the human form, highlighted in rare masterpieces such as André Kertész’s Underwater Swimmer,

Hungary 1917, while Imogen Cunningham’s Magnolia Blossom, Tower of Jewels 1925 and Tina Modotti’s Bandelier, Corn and Sickle 1927 feature in a large presentation dedicated to the Still Life. The Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the Sir Elton John Collection is curated by Shoair Mavlian with Simon Baker and Newell Harbin, Director of The Sir Elton John Photography Collection. The exhibition is accompanied by an exclusive audio tour of the exhibition featuring commentary from Sir Elton John, and a major new catalogue from Tate Publishing including an interview with Sir Elton John by Jane Jackson. India’s Vibrant and Colourful Culture Celebrated in

Kew’s Orchids Festival 2017

This month, visitors can chase away the winter blues and become immersed in an Indian celebration of vibrant colours, culture and magnificent plant life inside the tropical paradise of Kew Gardens’ Princess of Wales Conservatory during its 22nd annual Orchids Festival.

A

s well as the usual visual displays, the sounds of India will surround visitors entering the steamy glasshouse. From the tones of milkmen’s bicycle bells and newspaper boys, to the playful voices of school children, temple bells, and muezzin calls, the Indian street will be brought to life. This visual feast of colour will also feature elaborate floral displays inspired by a typical Indian market, including Kew’s own decorative rickshaws. An infographic map will transport the visitor from the dreary British winter to the vibrancy and colour of India. The map, created by Tonwen Jones, includes drawings of India’s natural vegetation and landscapes. A giant Indian flag created from 900 chrysanthemums will set the backdrop as visitors admire life-sized animal figures including an elephant, peacock and monkey. Phalaenopsis drops will hang

74 FEBRUARY 2017

delicately from the ceiling, while a beautifully embellished traditional Indian marriage swing sways amongst the Vandas, with sari material adding an extra splash of colour. This year’s pond display will explode with intense hues in a larger than life floral arrangement made up of Vanda, Dendrobium, Cymbidium and Paphiopedilum orchids, marrying traditional and modern culture. Elisa Biondi, Princess of Wales Conservatory Supervisor, RBG Kew says, “This year’s Orchids festival is going to be something really special and different. It will immerse visitors in the sights, senses and sounds of India’s exotic and vibrant culture creating an explosion of unique and colourful beauty. We hope this journey will highlight the significance of plants in all walks of life, from the spiritual and medicinal to the textiles and cuisine, all the while showing the importance of plant diversity and Kew’s work to protect, conserve and study plants.” Entrance to the Festival will be free and included in the daily entrance ticket. 2017 is also the year the UK and India will celebrate a major bilateral year of cultural exchange presented by the British Council. Reasons to love

ST LUCIA St Lucia is the quintessential lush tropical island paradise. With a superb climate, stunning scenery and mountains to explore, great snorkelling and diving, St Lucia provides a perfect holiday experience.

C

ocoa is one of the island’s most important crops and offers visitors a chance to indulge with plantation tours, chocolate-making workshops, chocolate menus and spa treatments imbued with cocoa. You could even pick cocoa pods, roast your own beans and create your own chocolate bars and truffles! St Lucia essentially has two seasons: the dry season, running from November to June, and a tropical season where more rain is likely, running from July to October. Temperaturewise, as St Lucia is located close to the equator, there is very little variation in terms of temperature. In the dry season temperatures range between 29°C from mid-December to mid-March, rising to 31°C from mid-March to June. The “coldest” day of the year is a rather balmy 24°C whilst March is the sunniest month with ten hours of sunshine a day.

76 FEBRUARY 2017

Much of St Lucia is mountainous and covered in tropical rainforest so you’re guaranteed wonderful views wherever you are on the island. The enormous volcanic cones of the Pitons, Petit Piton and Gros Piton, are the real stars of St Lucia. Towering 3,000 feet above sea level, Gros Piton dominates the south west coast and should you choose to hike to the top of the mountain accompanied by an experienced guide then you will certainly be rewarded with incredible views. Beaches are sandy, ranging from golden in the north to silvery in the south.

Why we love the Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort

Sugar Beach is a former sugar plantation set in over 100 acres of lush rainforest where elegance and relaxation are the order of the day. With colonial-style architecture, exquisitely designed accommodation and exceptional levels of service, you will feel truly pampered here. Breakfast is served overlooking stunning views and private dining can be arranged on the beach or under the stars on your own terrace. Active guests can make use of a fitness centre, tennis court, exercise classes, yoga, pilates and water sports whilst lounge lizards can just kick back and order a chilled mojito from their butler. The accommodation: a truly 5* experience ranging from beautiful guest rooms with private walled garden and plunge pool; ocean view grand luxury villas with unobstructed ocean views, private patios and an oversized plunge pool; beachfront bungalows where you can sink your toes into the sand from the comfort of your terrace; and a selection

of private residences which offer an exceptional level of luxury, privacy and space. The resort provides an indulgent world-class spa perfectly located to relax and rejuvenate you, offering a range of treatments and therapies; a full PADI dive school; waterfront dining with spectacular views; and a personalised butler service. This is all less than a nine hour flight from London followed by a 45 minute private transfer.

A 3 year plan for holidays

You may be all too familiar with making a three- or five-year plan for your work or personal life but have you ever considered making one for your holidays? Many of our clients have a long list of places they would like to visit but they don’t know where to start. As a consequence they find it hard to decide where to go when, often miss out on special offers and can find the entire decision-making process more stressful rather than enjoyable. We recommend making a very simple three-year plan of where in the world you would like to go; what time of year you are available to travel; and what things you would like to see or do. Then decide on budget and share the plan with us. We can help you work out the best time to visit each destination and hold flights well in advance so that you secure the very best prices. By sharing your three-year plan with us, we will keep a sharp eye out for special offers and book accommodation at the right time. You often don’t have to pay a deposit when flights are held on your behalf and the balance of any holiday is usually due just 8 weeks before departure. By sharing your plan with us, you will find that we have a greater understanding of your needs, work more productively on your behalf and take you much more seriously as a client. In partnership with our sister company, Feel Good Holidays, we celebrated ten years of business in December 2016 with a champagne and canapé reception for over ninety of our clients. Over the past decade we have expanded from a single desk to a welltravelled and experienced team of seven, building and maintaining a loyal clientele along the way. Changing the

EYE WEAR INDUSTRY It has been over a year and a half since CrossEyes first opened its doors in Amersham. The success of the first store and the continuous growth of CrossEyes across the UK and Denmark has led Amit Mandla Optometrist and Franchisee to soon open another store in Buckinghamshire!

C

rossEyes is a Danish chain of opticians built on honesty, dedication and smart design. The name CrossEyes was chosen by our Danish CEO Soeren Moller who carries a story behind it. Amit who has just under 20 years of experience as an Optometrist loves the concept of giving good quality eye wear and eye care at one clear price. This low price includes a complimentary non-rushed 30 minutes eye exam giving honest advice tailored to the customer. Also included in the price are a wide selection of quality Danish design frames, together with quality lenses and coatings. Amit’s optical assistant Sandra with her great character and interpersonal skills gives advice on possible frame designs that suits the customer and makes the experience fun! We have many customers coming back to us saying they have never received so many compliments on their glasses. This is partly because they are likely to spend time choosing the frame and trying all frames on as there is no price barrier. That’s the CrossEyes concept all frames carry the same all-inclusive price. Amit says he is happy and

84 FEBRUARY 2017

proud that all the glasses are made at our Danish workshop in Aarhus, Denmark. Let’s talk about progressives! (varifocal lenses). Should you require them all our lenses have a wide progressive zones for easier adaptation. Many customers who have not got along with them previously have tried our lenses and adapted to them well. This is probably because as there are different progressive lenses designs to choose, the one chosen previously may have been an inferior design. At CrossEyes there is only one good progressive design which carries a 2 month non-tol guarantee. We are proud to be NHS registered so people who are eligible can benefit from this service, and we have a range of funky kids glasses in store too. We have 10 stores in Denmark and 15 in the UK with many more opening this year. “2017 is the year where CrossEyes moves to the next level” says CEO Soeren Moller. The future is CrossEyes, the concept is clear. No compromeyes that’s CrossEyes. PRAISED FOR PATIENT CARE It’s official: Spire Harpenden Hospital rated “Good” by the Care Quality Commission

Spire Harpenden Hospital were praised for their patient centred care in their recently published CQC report, with their medical services singled out as “outstanding”

of the whole team. I am particularly proud that our medical services received an “outstanding”, the highest rating given by the CQC. The report highlights how much we care, both for our patients and also those that deliver services.” Generally, hospital food can be an area of criticism; however, the report praised Spire Harpenden’s food for providing a “range of choices for patients”, with dietary needs being met. This reaffirms the high quality catering services, that were given a 5 (the highest rating) by the food standards authority in August 2016. The hospital acted quickly on all issues that the CQC brought to its attention, and the full report can be read on the CQC website, www.cqc.org.uk. The report includes quotes from patients who were interviewed by the inspectors. Patients said that “nothing was too much trouble” and that they “found staff to be caring and compassionate at all times”. In fact, the report found that “all patients we spoke with were complimentary of the staff and

pire Harpenden Hospital received a “Good” rating as a result of the two day inspection, with quality and safety “the top priority”. Julia Salmon, Hospital Director is delighted with the news; “I am very proud and fortunate to lead such a hardworking and dedicated team. I feel that this report reflects the fact that our patients are at the heart of what we do.” An area the inspectors focussed on was medical services; in particular the Macmillan accredited chemotherapy service on Heartwood ward. This received an “outstanding” rating. The report praises the patient centred care led by consultants, which is at the heart of Spire Harpenden’s values. Nurses feel that they have time to spend with patients and their relatives, supporting their needs. Matron, Cathie Hardie said “The results of our inspection are fantastic, and reflect the hard work

the hospital.” These satisfied patients reflect Spire Harpenden’s 2016 patient satisfaction results which showed that 99% of patients would recommend Spire Harpenden to their friends and family. Not only was patient care analysed by the inspectors, staff were also interviewed about their feelings towards the management of the hospital. The report found that “Staff felt that they were working in a supportive environment” and that “the Hospital Director and Matron were highly visible and very approachable.” To find out more please call the team on 01582 714 420 or visit the website www.spireharpenden.com Spire Harpenden Hospital, Ambrose Lane, Harpenden, AL5 4BP

Summer bodies are made in the

WINTER If your New Year’s Resolution to lose weight and get in shape is starting to stall as the weeks fly by, why not try one of Courthouse Clinics’ body contouring treatments, to stay on track or give your progress a boost?

O

ur popular Cool Tech Fat Freezing treatment offers a fast, effective way to permanently eliminate stubborn pockets of fat from problem areas such as thighs, tummy, back and arms. As the name suggests, Fat Freezing (also known as cryolipolysis) works by freezing fat cells, causing them to die off and be eliminated naturally through the body’s own lymphatic system. This pain-free treatment is a great non-invasive alternative to liposuction, and achieves visible results after just one session. Another popular pain-free body contouring treatment at Courthouse Clinics is Endermologie. Bikini season might still be months away, but summer bodies are made in the winter, so now is the ideal time to begin a course. Endermologie is scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of cellulite, boost circulation and improve skin tone. A special handheld massage device is rolled over problem areas, breaking down the fat, water and toxins that give skin that uneven, dimpled appearance. During the process, blood flow is increased, skin is exfoliated and fat metabolism is increased – resulting in noticeably firmer, smoother, toned-looking skin. Book today and banish those lumps and bumps by the time the sun reappears! If skin tightening is your goal, then our Radiofrequency body treatments could be exactly what you’re looking for. Our Accent XL radiofrequency heats the surface of the body to instantly tighten loose skin – often an issue following dramatic New Year weight loss. Accent also targets the subcutaneous tissue, to help break down fatty deposits, so it can be used to target cellulite on the arms, abdomen, buttocks and thighs. Our Soprano skin tightening is another minimally-invasive treatment option for firmer, younger-looking skin. Using high-intensity infrared light, Soprano painlessly heats up the skin’s deeper layers, stimulating collagen production and improving surface skin tone and tautness. It can be used on almost any region of the body, and is an excellent option for women post-pregnancy. Whatever your aesthetic concerns, we have a selection of suitable treatment options. A momentous year Jo Woolf, Chief Executive Officer of South Bucks Hospice, looks forward to a landmark year for the charity and its patients.

2

017 will be a hugely significant and exciting year for South Bucks Hospice. Not only will we move into our stunning new purpose-built £4.8m building but also we will double our capacity to help patients. Our patients, their families and carers are at the centre of everything we do and I know people will very quickly be reaping the benefits of this move, in terms of care and convenience. Our new community day hospice will not only be bigger but will offer something radically different, particularly in the form of family Palliative mental health. Our 15,000 square foot three storey building, sited on the former Kingswood School site in Totteridge Lane, High Wycombe, will put all of the charity’s services under one roof, and also allow room to expand in response to need. Currently, we operate out of two houses on Amersham Road as well as Cedar Barn in Hazelmere. There is also the fabulously designed dedicated space at the new site for young adults (17-28) with life limiting illnesses. By the middle of 2018, it is projected that 650 to 800 people a month will be using the building. The current hospice, founded in 1984, has been enormously successful, but a far bigger building is needed to meet the demands of a growing and rapidly ageing population. We are the only palliative day hospice in South Bucks and serve over 320,000 people. According to research, there will be a dramatic increase in people aged 65 and over in our

90 FEBRUARY 2017

county. Today we are planning the services that we will need for tomorrow. While major strides have been made in clinical treatment plans over the past decade, there still remains a severe lack of care for the psychological impact of a terminal diagnosis on an individual and their family. Our new facilities will go a long way to putting this right. I understand the norm in some places is 6 to 24 sessions of counselling and then the patient, if needs be, is referred elsewhere. But at our hospice, the arrangement is openended. The great news is that we have buy in from the community, particularly some major public figures who have agreed to become our patrons. These include Wycombe MP Steve Baker. I will be announcing the others in due course, but they are hugely respected individuals who will support us and give us great strength going forward. All in all, this is going to be a momentous year for our Hospice and the community of South Bucks. Anything that you, the public, can do to help us would be very much appreciated, and on behalf of all those who use our services I say a heartfelt thank you. THE DETAILS How you can help? Ditch the

GIMMICKS Stop looking for the latest fitness trend & try this instead

W

ith a plethora of fitness products and services on the market, the frequency of fitness trends cropping up comes as no surprise and neither does their proclamation of their effectiveness. Whether they are whacky diet methods or cheap imitations that brash companies looking to empty the lining of your pockets deliver, we all know that trends have a tendency to come and go. I have no doubt that you can remember the days of brightly coloured spandex and high octane ‘pump classes’ to get ‘tight and toned’ – thankfully they are long gone. As humans many of us are subject to the becoming of the ‘shiny object syndrome’ and are consequently caught up in the idea of quick fixes and new ‘revolutionary’ ideas that allegedly can solve our problems. Whether that’s a new detox diet, cookbook or vomit-inducing workout, we know ultimately what we should be doing and what works time and time again. The simple acts of exercising more and eating less. Now I know this is a direct antithesis of a certain curlyhaired guru’s slogan and philosophy (which is also ironically a trend), but in truth the concept of exercising more (than you currently do) and eating less (calories) is consequently one that has stood the test of time and will for eternity. Why? Because the laws of thermodynamics do not change and it’s always been a case of burning more calories than we consume, as much as some professionals want to deny it. We far too often get caught up in shortcomings in the fitness, diet & health industries, perceiving that there’s 92 FEBRUARY 2017

more to fat loss more specifically than the aforementioned concept. We think it can’t be that simple and that there’s a major key element we are missing. I think that’s why we jump on the never-ending search for a single answer or solution. I must confess to some extent it’s a little more complicated than just exercising more and eating less because lifestyle factors play a huge role in success, however that’s where the role of a coach comes in. In truth, we don’t need to have a complete over-haul of our lifestyle in order to achieve what we want. Sometimes it’s about the small steps, the little changes that we can easily merge into our lifestyle that can make the biggest difference. It’s not about being revolutionary or being different for the sake of causing controversy or trying to stand out, rather it’s taking a step back, being honest with ourselves and saying that perhaps the life-long law of better health does not lie within a pill or new fitness trend. Check out thephitcoach.com to learn more about why I do what I do and arrange a complimentary strategy call to better understand how I can help you avoid the fads and gimmicks for longer term benefits. Superfoods for better moods While many of us reach for stodgy comfort foods when the blues kick in, snacking on mood-boosting superfoods will help to keep you healthier and happier too. Check out these superfoods for better moods... TOMATOES A recent study found that people who ate tomatoes two to six times a week were 46% less likely to suffer from depression than those participants who only ate tomatoes once a week. The researchers believe that the antioxidant called lypocene, which is found in tomatoes, might be the ingredient that helps protect against depression. OILY FISH Omega-3 fatty acids are great for our skin, heart and eye health, and research suggests they are equally beneficial for our mood. A study found that participants who had lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood were more likely to be moderately depressed and have a negative outlook. Furthermore, a study has found surprisingly low rates of seasonal affective disorder in Icelanders, where the diet is high in omega-3 rich fish. AVOCADO If you’re feeling sad, anxious or fearful, avocado could help to put you in a better mood. Avocados are a good source of folate, and research suggests that folate deficiency may be behind irrational fears and anxiety. Avocados are also rich in omega-3, which is also good for the mood and brain health. CHOCOLATE Chocolate is a well-known mood booster, but it seems that its happinessboosting properties are down to more than just the taste. Chocolate is high in mood-boosting chemicals, including relaxing magnesium, calming anandamide and pleasure-inducing phenylethylamine, and findings published in the scientific journal Nutritional Neuroscience have suggested that the food can even help to reduce the symptoms of depression. 94 FEBRUARY 2017

WALNUTS Walnuts are the perfect good-mood food, offering the combined moodboosting properties of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B6 and tryptophan. The nuts are also a good source of folate (vitamin B9); the deficiency of which has been linked to depression. Not only can walnuts boost your happiness, they can also help to ease anger. Walnuts contain both zinc and omega-3 fatty acids, and research has shown that omega-3 deficiency can contribute to aggressive behaviour, while a Japanese study has suggested that zinc may ease anger in women YOGHURT Yoghurt is a good source of the essential amino acid tryptophan, which helps to boost levels of serotonin (the happy hormone) in the brain. Researchers also found that the probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus casei found in some yoghurts can decrease anxiety, helping to put you in a calmer frame of mind. COFFEE While coffee tends to get a bad press, research shows that – for the ladies at least – coffee can be a mood booster. Findings revealed that women who drink two or more cups of caffeinated coffee a day are less likely to get depressed. Those who consumed two to three cups per day had a 15 per cent lower risk of developing depression, while for those who drank four or more cups a day their risk was reduced by 20 per cent. BANANAS Bananas are a good source of tryptophan, which can help to enhance your mood, aid relaxation and boost your confidence. They are also rich in magnesium, which can help you to relax, and vitamin B6, which can help to relieve depression. Bananas are also high in carbohydrates, which stimulate the production of serotonin, helping you to feel happier.

Why every UK homeowner should know about Permitted Development Rights

I

n England Permitted Development Rights (often referred to as “PD” Rights) where they are still in force, or not already all used up, allow UK homeowners to improve and extend their homes without the need to seek a specific planning permission. However, don’t get too excited, as many more modern properties have had their PD Rights withdrawn retrospectively either by their Local Council or by the Developer who built their home in a deal done by them with your Local Planning Department in order for them to be able to build more houses on the same site. Also previous owners have sometimes already extended a property to the maximum allowed

78 FEBRUARY 2017

under Permitted Development. For example semi-detached and terraced houses can put a conservatory on the rear of their homes with a projection from the rear wall of up to 3m if the PD rights are intact. If not, then a planning application will be required before one can be legally built. Before even replacing windows, doors, adding a porch, conservatory or an extension, it is wise to check that you can do so on your particular property even if you own it outright. For example if your property is a flat in a residential block of flats or in a conservation area or area of outstanding natural beauty, or is a Listed Building, you are not legally permitted to replace any windows or doors or add any structure without

“Previous owners have sometimes already extended a property to the maximum allowed under Permitted Development”

first obtaining planning permission. This may come as a bit of a shock to flat owners, as even if their Management Company organise the replacement windows, they are not allowed to do so without getting planning approval from the Local Council first. However UK homeowners (excluding flat owners unfortunately) can perform certain types of work without needing to apply for planning permission. These are called “permitted development rights”. They derive from a general planning permission granted not by the local authority but by the British Parliament. Sadly as just mentioned, the permitted development rights which apply to many common projects for houses do not apply to flats, maisonettes or other buildings. Similarly, commercial properties have different permitted development rights to dwellings. In some areas of the country, known generally as ‘designated areas’, permitted development rights are more restricted, such as in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or a World Heritage Site or in a Conservation Area. If this is the case for your property you will need to apply for planning permission for certain types of work which do not need an application in other areas. There are also different additional requirements if the property is a listed building. The UK Governments Planning Portal’s general advice is that you should contact your local planning authority and discuss your proposal before any work begins. This may or may not be a free service. Your Local Authority will be able to inform you of any reason why the development may not be permitted and if you need to apply for planning permission for all or part of the work. Sometimes local authorities require written submissions before being prepared even to look at a potential project, and many now charge a fee to ask them such questions. It is also worth noting that your local planning authority may have removed some of your permitted development rights by issuing an ‘Article 4’ direction. This will mean that you have to submit a planning application for work which normally does not need one (as is the case in some areas of Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire for example). Article 4 directions are made when the character of an area of acknowledged importance would be threatened by over development. They are most common in conservation areas. You will

“The UK Governments Planning Portal’s general advice is that you should contact your local planning authority and discuss your proposal before any work begins”

probably know if your property is affected by such a direction, but do check with your local planning authority if you are not sure. There are an awful lot of rules surrounding permitted development, planning and Building Regulations if you are looking to make additions or changes to your property, so it is sensible to partner with firms experienced in dealing with these matters so that you can be as sure as you can the advice you are given is accurate. For example glass extensions such as conservatories or orangeries (including previous extensions) and other buildings must not exceed 50% of the curtilage of your whole property. This limit includes outbuildings. Also as a general rule homeowners are not permitted to build an extension onto the front of their house if it faces a road without planning permission, as usually local authorities expect extensions to be put on the rear of a property. Homeowners in England are permitted to add a porch (if not in a Conservation Area etc.) up to a maximum of 3 square metres (external measurements) under Permitted Development, so it really is very important before buying a house or before making changes to a house to establish what PD Rights are still intact (if any). The bottom line is that if there are insufficient Permitted Development Rights to undertake the project you have in mind, you will need planning permission, and unless it would be deemed a temporary structure (like a conservatory), you will also probably need to submit a Building Regulations Application. The most a homeowner can extend beyond the original back wall of their house without planning under Permitted Development is 3 metres if it is a terraced or semi-detached property, or 4 metres if their property is detached. It is not possible therefore to have a conservatory on the back of an extension that projects beyond these limits without planning permission. To find out more about the potential options on your particular property, along with free professional advice, why not ask family owned and run independent double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Windows for a free no-obligation consultation with one of their experienced experts by calling 01494 854266 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk FEBRUARY 2017 79

Inspire &

Bringing the food revolution into the private sphere, Smallbone of Devizes has transformed the kitchen into an experiential space that inspires and stimulates senses.

A

t the forefront of British furniture design for more than 35 years, Smallbone has an unparalleled global reputation for producing the finest bespoke cabinetry. Throughout its history, the Wiltshire-based furniture-maker has pioneered key innovations, including the larder and kitchen island, that have transformed the kitchen from a cooking space to a multifunctional social hub. With food taking over our lives, from our Instagram feeds to our favourite TV programmes, Smallbone’s designs have never been so relevant. Creative and collaborative, food is a shared experience that expresses the personality of both the individual and the group. A vehicle of self-expression and social interaction, it is not only part of our lives, but it also defines the way we live. As a result, food preparation has become more visible and the art of cooking has taken centre stage. While the kitchen continues to act as an entertaining hub, kitchen design is revisiting the original function of the space, bringing food and tableware out of the cupboards and displaying them in new and innovative ways. Similarly, people tend to be more selective about the way they store food, embracing more traditional forms of storage such as the larder, which keeps provisions and condiments at an ambient temperature. First pioneered by Smallbone in the 1980’s, larders provide innovative and bespoke storage solutions, and feature detailing such as willow baskets for vegetables pull-out trays, custom china stores and spice racks. A recent evolution of the larder, the breakfast cupboard is another key innovation. Including cool granite shelves for eggs, cheese, and freshly baked cakes as well as sinks, refrigerators and coffee

A combination of the Brasserie and Handleless concepts, this kitchen fuses pickled character oak and painted finishes of the Brasserie with a bronze carcass Handleless island featuring a hand-painted finish. Kitchens start from £45,000

machines, it keeps breakfast items in one place and easily accessible. Each larder is handmade in Smallbone’s Devizes workshop and designed to suit a client’s exact specification and lifestyle. As part of this new food culture, people are keen to bring the fine dining and eating out experience at home. They see themselves as food curators, who want to recreate the ambiance of a restaurant in their own kitchens and impress their friends with a well-organised display of food and drinks. Following this trend, Smallbone has found that, while many clients may have a dedicated wine room, they are increasingly looking for a place to display their finest vintages while keeping them on hand for entertaining. The beautifully handcrafted Wine Wall has been designed to respond to this new demand, as homeowners are keen to showcase their wine collections outside of the traditional cellar environment. The larder and Wine Wall are part of a diverse portfolio of immaculately executed furniture for every room in the house, conceived by Smallbone’s highly skilled craftsmen with decades of experience. From kitchens and bathrooms to libraries and home offices, each commission is still handcrafted in the company’s Devizes workshop. Engineered

BEAUTY Spacers Tile and Wood Flooring have been supplying high quality Engineered Oak floors to the retail and commercial sector for over 25 years.

W

e have worked closely with our factory to produce a range of wood flooring that not only mirrors current trends but is technically and environmentally the most advanced available. All our Engineered Oak is thoroughly tested, is EUTR compliant and SVLK certified. The top layer is genuine Western European Oak. None of it is Chinese or Siberian so you are assured of its source and quality. The ‘Core” (the important bit) is constructed of single species Plantation Hevea (Rubberwood). It doesn’t grow naturally in South East Asia so is farmed for this purpose. As the Hevea tree nears the end of its rubber producing life it is felled and immediately replaced with a younger sapling that not only uses up more harmful CO2 but also produces more rubber. The Hevea used for the core of all our wood flooring has a density similar to Oak giving it unsurpassed stability in all different climates and environments. Hevea will always outperform any plywood or softwood cored material found in so many cheaper alternative wood floors. The back layer construction is also a locally grown plantation pine species, which again adds to the already excellent stability of our flooring. The vast majority of our wood flooring has undergone some degree of hand finishing ensuring a consistent high quality, high performance wood floor. This hand finishing gives each of our floors a ‘bespoke’ feel. Our ‘Antique’ finished floors all feature textures and surfaces produced entirely by hand rather than automation that gives each style a unique feel in terms of grain and colour. All of our Oak floors are treated with the specifically designed Extreme Matt Oil. Using German technology from Klump Coatings, these oils, as long as the floor is kept clean during installation and undergoes some form of regular basic domestic cleaning, will require no further applications throughout the floors life. When you choose to buy your wood floor from Spacers you are assured that it is among some of the best wood flooring available in the world. Visit the ‘Special Offers’ section of our website to see some of the remarkable new woods available or simply pop into one of our showrooms to see our extensive displays and take home samples. 100 FEBRUARY 2017

Ugly Duckling 1960’s

PROPERTY TRANSFORMATION Given Brexit and the decline in residential sales as buyers ‘wait and see’ or worse, demanding late price cuts, perhaps now is the time to reconsider your property options with a view to increasing the value of your home long term.

J

ill Newman is the Architectural Design Director at UglyDucklingHomes, now based locally in Beaconsfield with considerable London based and overseas property renovation, project management and interior design experience. Offering a bespoke, personalised, friendly service and providing the best full construction and build teams. Effectively adding significant value to residential property. Extensively transforming tired, outdated and impractical interiors and exteriors with innovative reconfigurations of living space, creative extensions, loft conversions, basements, driveways and landscaping. Redesigning and creating classic and cutting edge contemporary interiors, including exceptionally designed kitchens and bathrooms. Improving living space tastefully, with longevity and bespoke every time while intelligently and most importantly, in today’s unpredictable housing market, with a view to increasing the value of the home for the long term. Amber House was an UglyDucklingHomes internal and external renovation project. It involved the substantial renovation and facelift of a tired, antiquated and dilapidated 1960’s brick built, four bedroom, detached, family home. The transformation also included the simple landscaping of both the front and rear gardens adding a serene and smart approach to the property.

Faithfully interpreting the clients wishes for modern, open plan living and how the entire family wished to use the space was key 102 FEBRUARY 2017

Amber House was successfully transformed into a stylish and eco friendly contemporary home creating a modern, easy blend of contemporary living spaces for the family. Faithfully interpreting the clients wishes for modern, open plan living and how the entire family wished to use the space, the living room was designed to transcend the borders to merge with the other shared areas such as the kitchen and dining room. A master bedroom ensuite, study area and simple extension was included in the reconfiguration adding considerable value to the property. More sunshine was encouraged into the home by installing sky lights and replacing walls and windows with glass floor to ceiling doors. Underfloor heating was installed downstairs and a contemporary, eco fireplace. A composite granite patio was installed in the south facing garden leading to a newly created sunken walled patio area with wooden decking. The exterior was completely landscaped creating a sweeping driveway, extensive lawns, lighting and impressive frontage. Design without

LIMITATIONS Recently I met with Tobias Trigg, owner of local interior design studio Tobias Oliver Interiors. I found out about Tobias and the business that is half way through its first year in Beaconsfield Old Town

W

hat made you choose interior design as a career? My natural focus as a child was anything to do with design; specifically furniture and interiors. I would constantly re-arrange furniture in my parent’s home – after realising this was not a phase I would grow out of, my Dad introduced me to graph paper to perfectly plan a room to scale. Little did he know this would develop into rather an obsession! After my A-Levels, I went to Chelsea College of Art and Design for an Art Foundation, followed by an Interior Design degree course at the American Intercontinental University London, gaining both a British and American Degree – allowing me to work internationally with the correct accreditations. Throughout my studies, I carried out internships at a variety of furniture and interior design studios. At every workplace, there were new challenges – and it deepened my thirst to learn more. After 12 years, I now manage my own Interior Design practice. I 108 FEBRUARY 2017

don’t feel like I chose interior design as a career; it feels like it chose me. How have you evolved as a Designer over the past 5 years? I have been fortunate enough to work for some of the top award-winning, high-end interior design companies on the continent. Through this experience I have built an expansive network of suppliers, craftsmen and artisans to produce luxury interiors that are totally unique and more importantly, reflect the lifestyles’ of our clientele. Being able to understand a client’s brief and in turn deliver this on time, and to budget is a skill learned over many years of experience. Over the past 5 years this technique has been honed, and

honed again, to a place where I feel I can offer clients any design aspiration they can conceive. Why should I use an Interior Designer? It’s something to think about if you haven’t already done so. Hiring an interior designer is a clever decision if you’ve invested valuable funds into your home and want to be able to showcase it to look its best. Designers truly serve a purpose for everyone. Whether you have no idea where or how to begin to re-design your home, or whether you have an idea but need help tying pieces together, or you simply haven’t the time to execute your style and desires due to your busy day to day schedule. Choosing an interior designer for a project can be a challenging decision, with so many options available. My advice would be to make sure your interior designer has the correct qualifications, relevant industry experience and of course have a friendly approachable manner. Why don’t you have a shop? My feeling is that a shop sells what it displays. In my case, there would not be premises large enough to offer the infinite range of design possibilities Tobias Oliver Interiors can provide. We could open a showroom, and display an interior design showcase – however, this would prove a distraction to my Client’s own design aspirations. The studio has no fixed design style; rather Clients choose Tobias Oliver Interiors for our ability to embrace ‘their’ chosen design language whether minimalist or highly decorative, classic or futuristic. In all cases, Clients expect an extremely high level of sophistication and finish. Our bespoke solutions can range from understated country elegance to dynamic city chic, showcasing the very best in

The purpose of hiring an interior designer can be looked at in 10 points: 1. Saves Money 2. Professional Assessment 3. Detailed Drawings 4. Budgeting and Planning 5. Liaison with architect and contractors 6. Wide availability of resources 7. Contacts, contacts, contacts! 8. Wow-Factor 9. Home re-sale value 10. A trained eye creativity with a diverse range of styling blending seamlessly into every design. Such original thinking is further enhanced through intricate attention to detail; married with fine craftsmanship sourced both locally and internationally. Our Studio is a “Design Centre” - there are no limitations to design concepts. What are your future plans? We have been very fortunate to be working on a diverse variety of projects in the recent months. This has given us the ability to focus on projects we truly enjoy, enabling us to focus our efforts to projects that inspire us. It is important to me that we keep true to our mission and values; therefore, working with Clients who wish to achieve an aspirational lifestyle is key to my future plans. My aim for the next year is to develop a range of furniture, where finishes and fittings can be alternated to reflect our Client’s own preferences. My objective is to ensure the furniture range will demonstrate the wide range of influences I have been fortunate enough to embrace during my personal and professional career. As I leave the creative hub that is the Tobias Oliver Design Centre, it strikes me how comfortable I have felt for the past few hours. Toby is very easy to get along with and amazingly opened my eyes to styles and designs that I would never have considered on my own. When I am planning my next redesign he will definitely get my call. HOUSE & GARDEN

Bringing the OUTSIDE IN

Is your conservatory too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer?

T

here are many reasons that people add conservatories to their homes, from needing additional space to creating somewhere quiet and peaceful to relax. For many, their conservatory is one of their favourite rooms of the house - with plenty of natural light streaming through the windows and panoramic view of the garden – it almost feels like bringing the outside in. All too often, the idea can be so much better than the reality. Conservatories can be too hot in the summer, and often too cold in the winter. What seemed like a perfect addition to the home can become a disappointing unused space all too quickly. So – how to fix this? There is a solution that can keep the climate within the conservatory more in tune with the rest of the home that will ensure the space is used to its maximum potential.

Within three to five days you will have a fully usable space to use all year long, far less effected by the outside.

The solution is simply to replace the roof of the conservatory. A much less invasive procedure than you might initially think, the existing roof is replaced with a bespoke fit, lightweight, timber treated frame and clad with durable slates or ultra-light tiles. Finally, the ceiling is finished internally with superb plaster finish. Insulating the room from the elements, this in-expensive solution will give your conservatory a completely new look – and make it feel like a brand new room. Within three to five days you will have a fully usable space to use all year long, far less effected by the outside elements, more in keeping with the rest of your home, and give you back the room that the conservatory was designed to do in the first place. No upheaval from an extension build, and none of the expensive costs. Nu-Look have over 950 local customers already enjoying their new found conservatory – could this be the solution that you are looking for? Storage Space MAXIMISED

Wardrobes play a big part in the overall design of your bedroom with a wide range of sizes, shapes and materials to choose from to create the ideal wardrobe to fit.

I

t can be quite rare to find a wardrobe that is able to fit in your space exactly without you having to rearrange the entire room to make sure that the storage space you need can fit perfectly. Bespoke fitted wardrobes are ideal for bedrooms with awkward ceilings or for spare rooms that you would like to turn into a space to store all of your clothing and accessories. A fitted wardrobe is one that is created to the exact sizing and space required, providing a wardrobe completely bespoke to you and your home. When thinking of installing a fitted wardrobe you must make sure to measure the space accurately so that the furniture will fit perfectly with no gaps or with lack of space. Once the space has been measured you can then start to consider which materials and finishes you are after and whether you would like these to match the rest of your interior design or whether you want them to stand out against other items of furniture. With a wide range of materials, finishes and accessories available for fitted wardrobes you are sure to create something unique. The next step in creating your ideal wardrobe is to decide on which style of door you are after, these can be hinged, sliding or with a flush-sliding mechanism. The style you choose will depend entirely on your preference as to what you will find easier and more attractive. Once your doors have been chosen you will then be able to choose between a vast range of colours, finishes and handles.

112 FEBRUARY 2017
