Set in 170 acres of natural parkland, the Royal Gunpowder Mills mixes fascinating secret history, exciting science and beautiful surroundings to produce a different day out for all the family. Take a trip in the land-train or military truck to discover more about this secret island. Visitors can trace the history of explosives in a stunning audio-visual show, uncover the truth behind the infamous Gunpowder Plot, come face to face with some real space rockets and get to grips with more than 200 firearms ranging from
muskets to machine guns in the fascinating Armoury. Expect an exciting array of eggsplosive Easter fun at e Royal Gunpowder Mills which is open daily until Sunday 12 April. Professor Nitrate is back in his MadLab this Easter and is set to unveil even more ‘secret science’ experiments, he’s always on the look-out for willing volunteers to test his latest theories so visitors will need to be prepared for fun-filled and, occasionally, smoke-filled adventures. With the great British summer almost upon us, now is the time to look ahead and think about spending time together as a family during the holidays. Digging the BBQ equipment out of the shed and buying a new picnic basket might be on the ‘to do’ list, but Origin Leisure has found that the sunshine also inspires people to start thinking about a home swimming pool. Andrew Ginger, CEO at Origin Leisure, answers the most frequently asked questions from homeowners looking to dive in. Enjoy your issue and we look forward to seeing you again in May.

Whether enjoy your garden or visiting others – spring is a wonderfully vibrant garden season.
S
pring is such a beautiful season. Everything seems to wake up from the winter’s hibernation and bursts back into life. Dashes of colour in the garden encourage us to move outside from the cosiness of our homes and into the outdoors for fresh air, exercise and to also relax in our comfortable garden furniture or hammocks. Gardening is hard work but very rewarding. Being able to relax and enjoy a barbecue with friends or family, watching children play ball games or having some fun in a paddling pool without worry of mess and splashes, make all the hard work of gardening and weeding worthwhile in order to enjoy the outdoors. If looking to make your garden a joy and you’re a budding horticulturist, spring is a great time of year to get out and celebrate the very best the season has to offer. Whether enjoy your garden or visiting others – spring is a wonderfully vibrant garden season. Spring Term HigHligHTS from the oak-tree SchoolS
W
ith many parents making their final choices for schools for September 2015, we take a look behind the scenes at the Oak-Tree Group of Schools - three local independent schools in the Epping Forest area with impressive results. Epping’s Coopersale Hall School finished Spring Term with an Easter Bonnet parade and concerts by many budding musicians and performers. During the March Open Morning, Headmistress Kaye Lovejoy talked to many new parents looking for places in September 2015 and beyond who were visiting the school with their children. She commented, “Our Year 6 pupils worked extremely hard for the entrance exams to a wide range of senior schools ready for September 2015, and were rewarded with a record number of offers from many selective schools throughout the Epping Forest area and London. ey finished the term with a ‘Bikeability’ course that taught them road safety and awareness – very important as they take the next steps towards greater independence.” March has been eventful at Normanhurst School in North Chingford with the school production of Robin Hood, a busy Open Morning for prospective families, a Science ‘Super Learning’ day to celebrate Science Week and a week-long full school inspection. Headmistress, Claire Osborn, explained, ‘We are constantly looking for ways to broaden the children’s education. Although it was
1 6 april 2015
an interesting challenge having an inspection around Open Morning, the Science days and rehearsals, the inspection team was able to see Normanhurst in action and our pupils’ love of learning. We encourage our pupils to work hard and take part in all aspects of school life. For example, at the end of term our Easter service included all pupils from 2 ½ to 16 either taking part in the Easter Bonnet parade, singing, performing or reading. What a fitting finish to a busy term!’ At Oaklands School in Loughton, Headmistress Cheryl Macnair was delighted for the Year 6 pupils and their record successes in the 11+ examinations. She explained, “is term we have seen our best ever results for senior schools, with many in the position of being able to choose between a number of selective independent schools as they had multiple offers. e final week of term had visits from the Easter Bunny, our school swimming gala at Loughton Pool and an enjoyable School Disco. Earlier in March our boys and girls cross country teams ran well and the choirs performed superbly at the Epping Forest Festival. Our Open Morning saw a high number of new families visiting Oaklands and our older pupils were proud to act as guides.” ■

t the Beth Chatto Gardens lime-green heads of Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii illuminate the borders in the Gravel Garden, providing the perfect backdrop for early spring bulbs, Bergenia flowers, blue Anemone blanda, perennial wallflowers, scarlet Anemone x fulgens and the jewel-like flowers of Anemone pavonina (in many shade of creamy white, salmon-pink and cherry red) Water Garden: One of the earliest flowers to appear near the water’s edge is the bright yellow spathes of Lysichiton americanus (Skunk cabbage). It’s a superb bog-plant, later producing large rosettes of bold, glossy leaves. Camellia x williamsii‘ Donation’ has been in bloom since March and will continue its wonderful display for another couple of weeks. For a few days each year, in April, the Great White Cherry (Prunus ‘Tai-haku’) is transformed into a breathtaking beauty of white blossom. In the Woodland Garden a tapestry of hellebores, daffodils and other spring delights mingle together. Keep an eye out for the maroon or white flowers of Trillium. As the name suggests the parts of the plants are all in threes. Another woodland gem is Erythronium, sometimes mistaken for a lily, with its shiny, often mottled leaves and creamy, yellow or pink flowers with recurved petals. Gardens and Cups of Tea …My uncertain path with green, that I may speed Easily onward, thorough flowers and weed.
I
John Keats (1795-1821) - Extract from: A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever
n this month’s magazine, I have purposely selected features which have included some beautiful images of flowers. When the daffodils and other spring flowers blossom, one can feel assured that spring has arrived; nature has awoken after her long and peaceful sleep through winter. I have always enjoyed visiting beautiful gardens and must confess, I am extremely fond of my own garden too. It affords me some personal, quiet, outside space where I can savour a hot beverage whilst contemplating creative ideas. But before this respite can be enjoyed, I need to mow and weed the garden… Despite my inclination to call a gardener, the memories return: the copious amounts of tea, preferably on an hourly basis. Also gardener’s teas are generally associated with a quick chat. As you hand over the mug there’s no quick getaway… you find yourself drawn into a conversation about your garden, so if I’m writing, the stream of consciousness has gone, my creative flow thwarted and it is impossible to return back to a plot, the writing of a feature or strategy for a website. Plus of course, gardeners aren’t reliable time-keepers. You wait in – they don’t always turn up: if it looks like rain – no gardener. If late, it’s because of a delay from the last job. In one case, I was informed that the gardener would need to bring his large and unruly dog. So as I recall all
2 0 april 2015
the inane excuses and hassle, I vowed that this year, I would do the garden myself. With renewed enthusiasm and vigour, I take out the lawn-mower from its sanctuary of the shed, empty out last year’s grass, mud and dirt, plug it in and reluctantly it shakes and rattles, then miraculously comes alive. Together, we attempt straight lines in the lawn. I then attempt some weeding, cutting back what’s got lanky and somewhat overgrown. I attempt a rose bush – it fights back and my arm is scratched. Raking the garden, I notice that my back begins to twinge and I’m thirsty and need a cup of tea. I note it’s harder to get out of the garden chair. Lower back really does ache, my neck feels stiff, I have broken fingernails and scratches on my arms from the five minutes of cutting… I throw the tools back in the garage as I can now barely walk and am hobbling back to the safety of indoors. Result: Anybody know a gardener? I’ve got an urn in case they need gallons of hot water for their tea plus a large tin of bikkies. ■

NEW ADULT ART CLASS OPENS Words Christine Baker PiCtures niCky BamBer
A
new Adult Art Class opens in Loughton in mid-May designed for absolute beginners to improvers with an easy step-by-step guide to draw, paint and create. Local people who enjoyed TV’s ‘e Big Painting Challenge’ will now get a chance to get ‘hands on’ at the same time as having fun and learning new skills. It will be held at LifeWorks behind Loughton Methodist Church on Wednesdays for three hours with a choice of mornings or afternoons. It’s a part-time course run over 14 weeks. Chingford based Art teacher Adelaine Frank has a passion to bring art to the fingertips of those interested in teasing out their own creativity. e class has the added benefit of tutor Jim Jack, a sculptor and local artist. Jim also provides one-to-one advice and all the help needed to develop those artistic skills. Adelaine, originally from South Africa and a freelance illustrator, came to England in 2000. She said “I see how much pleasure drawing and painting gives to people but so many are scared to start. Students in our current classes are having a fabulous time being creative.”
“I REALLy LOOk fORWARD TO IT” Sandra Joseph, a former teacher from Chingford, joined the current course to help with her business Treetops Garden Design. She said “is course has filled in the gaps from a previous specialist garden design class. I was worried it might be beyond me but it’s been brilliant and given me much more confidence. “Adelaine and Jim put everyone at ease and we all get individual help and advice. I am enjoying it and really looking forward to going to the next level. Just to sit and paint is so relaxing and who knows what I might achieve in the future.”
“I’m IN A DIffERENT WORLD” Karen from Loughton found herself attending the afternoon Art Class sessions after her partner bought it as a Christmas present. While Karen is keen on decorating and interior design she never got the chance to develop her
2 2 april 2015
artistic talent at school. “I was unsure about the class but at the same time I wanted to see if I had any flair. Adelaine got me hooked and gave me confidence. is is special time for me when I can express myself and it’s fun and great to meet new people.” Adelaine, who is Mum to four children all of whom excel in art, has a strong drawing background and took graphic design at University. She also teaches an art group at Latchett Evangelical Church in Woodford. She said “I thoroughly enjoy teaching and to see people grow is so rewarding. at’s the great thing about this new Art Class – people come with no background in art and in no time at all they grow in confidence and ability.” e Lifeworks venue is fabulous, light and airy. ■

edbridge Sports and Leisure (RSL) is a firmly established and respected venue. Familiar and friendly, its presence has a long-standing record for its outstanding multi-sports facilities and relevance to the community. Nationally revered, which is the hallmark of the centre’s ongoing success, RSL was used to support the recent London Olympics. My earliest recollection of being actively involved with the centre, were judo lessons as a child. Although I never pursued this interest, I can still perform a nifty O Soto Gari. Over the decades I have witnessed RSL grow from one central building to other buildings such as the Jean Brown Arena. e centre is always busy and buzzing. Mums making use of the parent/toddler sessions or enjoying a gym, pilates or yoga session; children playing sports with their families or as part of a school lesson; adults benefitting from the multiple and varied programmes from fitness training to an intense game of squash. “Redbridge Sports and Leisure is an outstanding, multi-sports facility which is often utilised as a national sporting venue.”
As a charity, the RSL management team and board, have been devoted to the centre’s ongoing development. ey continue to look forward with respect to future requirements and how the centre can offer community support as a hub of activity and leisure. e bistro has an improved menu for today’s healthy lifestyle preferences and there are social areas where you can relax, pre/post activity or to simply meet with friends who are also members.
2 4 ApRiL 2015
Beyond the sports and as most local people are familiar with RSL, increasingly the centre is being used for small to large, corporate or social events. e Jean Brown Centre offers various sized suites dependent upon function and number of guests. Plus the large sporting arena is particularly good for major tournaments. Whether adding balloons and ribbons to the staircase and hallways for a party atmosphere, or for a corporate requirement, RSL has all the necessary extras such as WIFI, air-conditioning and presentation screens. e onsite free parking for 450+ cars makes an event accessible and safe, especially when guests are returning to their vehicles late at night or when it’s dark. “We’re a charity and not a commercial enterprise. All financial surpluses are reinvested in the centre. Our mission and commitment is to support the community as a trusted, sports and recreational venue. We have a hands-on approach to providing the highest standard of customer service and adapting to changing trends in 2015.” Ken Leggate, Chief Executive
With a respected history, RSL looks forward to many decades more, supporting the community as the sporting and leisure heart of Redbridge. ■

Now established among the major events in the sporting calendarr,, the Lond London Marathon is shown on television in more that 150 countries around the world. As a fundraising event, there is no race in the world that comes close to the London Marathon. An iconic image of the event are the thousands of runners pounding the streets with sheer determination, to raise money for charity, many in fancy dress, hoping to stand out from the crowds. More than three quarters of competitors now run for a good cause and a third of all entry places are offfer fered by charitable orrganisations. ganisations. When Vir Virrgin was announced as the title sponsor of the London Marathon in 2010, the ambition was to work together to reach a charity tyy fundraisingg tarrget gget of £1/4 billion in five years. This figure has been broken, with the total raised for charity in the five years of V Vir irrgin Money sponsorship now standing at £261.4 million. In addition, over the last three decades the London awarded more than £35 Marathon Charitable Trust r has awarde million in grants to develop sport and recreation facilities in the capital and other areas in the country where the London marathon stages events. The elite races start at 9am for women and 9.45am for men, with the London Marathon wheelchair races beginning at 9.20am and the mass race at 9.45am. Tw welve months on from their thunderous battle down The Mall last April, wheelchair stars David W Weir eir and Marcel Hug are all set for a thrilling re-match when the world’s best paraathletes will be going for gold in eightt IPC Athletics World World Championship marathons. irgin Money London Marathon. The 41-year-old at the 2015 Vir athletics legend, who won the London Marathon on three occasions between 2002 and 2005, was speaking at the Vir Virrgin Money London Marathon’s annual lunch event at Michel Roux Jr’s restaurant, Roux at Parliament Square, before flying out to Kenya for a training camp. She said: “I’m full of excitement and lots of gratitude to the London Marathon for giving me the opportunity to come back and do my last one here. It means so much to be running the London Marathon again, because it’s an event I have grown up with. After this year’s race, my aim is to keep running but just for enjoyment, and to run as long as I can.” Celebrities lined up to take part this year include Formula 1 star Jenson Button and British fashion designer Henry Holland with Juliet Aubrey, y, Helen Georrge, gge,, Dervla Kirwan K and Corrie’s Bruno Langley just four of the famous faces from the world of television drama. Reality television stars Hugo Taylor and Oliver Proudlock putting aside the dramas of Made in Chelsea to run in aid of Malaria No More and The Rainbow Trust, and the British Heart Foundation respectively. Some advice to those that wish to go along and support and cheer on the brave runners, many roads are closed on race day, so the best way to get around is using the London Underrground, South Eastern and Docklands Light Railway mberr,, the (DLR), who lay on extra services especially. Remember trains will be busy all day – expect it to be like rush hour. You ou’llll probably have to queue at some stations and the tube lines may be forced to shut temporarily throughout the day to help ease the crowds. Daisy Ball Twenty-One A spectacular charity ball is to be held at a Park Lane hotel to raise vital funds for blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan.
G
uests who attend Anthony Nolan’s 21st annual black-tie event, the Daisy Ball, will be celebrating the charity’s lifesaving work at the prestigious Great Room at the Grosvenor House Hotel, on Saturday 16th May 2015. Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with blood cancers such as leukaemia and lymphoma, by matching remarkable individuals willing to donate their bone marrow to the people who desperately need lifesaving transplants. To help a patient in need, a donor must be found who has a matching tissue type, and there are millions of variations. It can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. As it costs £100 to recruit each new person to their existing register of potential donors, it’s essential for Anthony Nolan to raise valuable funds and find more lifesaving matches. Last year, Daisy Ball Twenty raised over £240,000 – which helped to add more potential lifesavers to the register and conduct vital research to help people with blood cancer have the best possible chance of life. This spectacular, entertaining, and lifesaving event regularly attracts over 750 guests. The night includes a scrumptious three-course meal, inspiring real-life stories and world-class cabaret entertainment. There is also a surprise headline act, and previous performers have included The Three Degrees, The Osmonds, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Heather Small and the cast of The Jersey Boys.

his spring the V&A will present the only major retrospective in Europe of the work of the visionary fashion designer Lee Alexander McQueen. One of the most innovative designers of his generation, McQueen was celebrated for his extraordinary creative talent. He combined a profound grasp of tailoring and eclectic range of influences with a relentless pursuit to challenge the boundaries of art and fashion, blending the latest technology with traditional craftsmanship. Originated by the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, York, Savage Beauty B will be edited and expanded for the V&A’s larrge exh ge exhibition galleries. It will feature 30 additional garments, including some rare early pieces, lent by private individuals and collectors such as Katy England and Annabelle Neilson as well as pieces from the Isabella Blow Collection and the House of Givenchy. A new section will be added to the exhibition, focusing on McQueen’s fledgling development as a designer in London. Gainsbury and Whiting, the production company that collaborated with Alexander McQueen in staging his catwalk shows are working with the V&A on the exhibition. Each section will capture the essence of the provocative, dramatic and extravagant catwalk presentations that McQueen became renowned forr,, combining storytelling, theatrical performance, music and film. Another key moment of the exhibition is the Cabinet of Curiosities, which will showcase designs produced by McQueen in collaboration with fellow creatives such as the jeweller Shaun Leane and milliner Philip Treacy. Presented in a double-height gallery, interspersed with film footage of nearly all of McQueen’s catwalk shows, it will display around 40 additional objects that have not previously been seen together.
In total, the exhibition will showcase more than 200 ensembles and accessories, the larrgest gest number of individual pieces designed by McQueen and collaborators ever seen together. They range from McQueen’s Central Saint Martins’ postgraduate collection of 1992 to his final designs for A/W 2010, completed after his death, and are drawn primarily from the Alexander McQueen archive in London. Sarah Burton, Creative Director Alexander McQueen, said: “Savage Beauty is a celebration of the most imaginative and talented designer of our time. Lee was a genius and a true visionary who pushed boundaries, challenged and inspired. He believed in creativity and innovation and his talent was limitless.”

Ladies’ Day
a touch of elegance...
adies’ Day is racing’s special day for the Ladies, a highlight of the summer social calendar, where all eyes will be on the most stylish women. Every racecourse is transformed into a sea of colour, with bright outfits topped off by the most flamboyant of hats. Thousands of women across the UK prepare weeks in advance, selecting their dresses, eye-catching hats and fascinators, and flock to the races with the action on the track of secondary importance to their stylish outfits. Ladies’ Day is the perfect opportunity to get dressed up, enjoy yourselves, mingle with celebrities, and hopefully get some winners if you are able to prise yourself away from the champagne bar. Girls deck themselves out as if they are off to lie back on a sun kissed Caribbean beach in the hot sun. Some ladies looking somewhat bronzed already! Ladies’ Day is a real fashion show with bubbly, and outshining the other girls to be the most glamorous. When dressing to impress, Ladies’ Day is one of the most difficult days of the year. It is Spring, but the weather is utterly unpredictable; it certainly won’t rain on the fashion parade! Heels have to be worn, tottering around on the grass; and there is the small matter of choosing the perfect frock to wow the judges in the Ladies’ Day competitions. As befits tradition, statement hats
3 4 april 2015
are the order of the day, with many race-goers keeping their most magnificent outfits for the occasion. Generally headpieces, hats or fascinators must be worn in the grandstand area - with hats mandatory in the royal enclosure. From the most glamorous designer millinery, to the ridiculous and oversized novelty, or indeed eccentric hats, Ladies’ Day has it all. Whether you want to strut your stuff at the bookies, sip champagne on the lawns or simply resurrect that hat and shoes combo from the wedding you went to last year, Ladies Day provide a great excuse to let your hair down! The other important element, the people; your guests, be it business prospects, family or friends, you will have all the ingredients you need. Dress up and join the regal tradition and pageantry, join in the revelry, and enjoy a magnificent, and indeed memorable day of prestigious racing - and of fashion.
Here is a diary of forthcoming Ladies’ Days… ...we always need a bit of time to prepare!

his month, I would like to focus on porcelain veneers. Where appropriate, this treatment can offer the most natural and beautiful smiles possible. e treatment is minimally invasive and long lasting, as long as the treatment is planned and done really well. What are porcelain veneers? Porcelain veneers are thin facings made from porcelain. ey are custom made by the ceramist technician and bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. Who can benefit from porcelain veneers? Anyone who has uneven, discoloured, crooked or worn/damaged teeth. It is important that you consider all the alternative treatment options, which include braces, teeth whitening, cosmetic contouring and bonding (use of white fillings instead of porcelain). It is also essential to have a healthy mouth and an excellent standard of oral hygiene before this type of cosmetic treatment is considered.
hoW do We ensure the final result Will be What the patient really likes? e process begins with a thorough initial assessment and consultation to find out what the patient really wants. We use digital photographs and replica models of the teeth to plan everything carefully. I then carry out a “mock up” or trial simulation in
the mouth. I artistically sculpt and shape white filling material over the teeth to create a simulated end result. Using an iPAD, we then take a short video with the patient smiling and talking naturally. is is often a “WOW” for the patient as they can actually see in their mouth how a whiter, fuller smile will look literally within 20-30 minutes! hoW long do veneers last? Research published in 2013 showed that porcelain veneers have a 98% success rate after 12 years if bonded to the outer enamel layer. is proves that if teeth were crooked, and were first straightened with braces so that the teeth are actually in the correct position, then porcelain veneers are very effective and long lasting. e research also showed that if porcelain veneers are bonded to the inner dentine layer, then the success rate after 12 years reduces to 68%. is may be the situation in cases where acid has damaged the outer enamel layer, or the teeth have worn away due to a strong bite. So, if you are conscious or feel embarrassed of your
smile, and want the best advice on your treatment options, then visit our website www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk or contact our practice on 020 85000544. We will arrange a FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION to take digital photographs of your current situation, carry out a mock up with white filling material, and show you on video how a more attractive smile will improve your appearance and confidence! ■

ooking for a quick fix to skincare problems is not realistic, providing an ongoing skin health program is what I like to provide my clients. inking about your skin health, correcting problems and imbalances and giving you the knowledge to protect your skin is key. A comprehensive way to achieve a youthful and more healthy skin tone and a bespoke skin program is given to each individual. e following bespoke combination treatments are just a few in the way that I work to enhance results for my clients. Tailoring treatments to benefit several different problems is not only more effective but also more cost effective. Key things to taKe into consideration • ere is no such thing as a quick fix. • Photos are essential in order to treat the face over a number of years, effectively we need to see the ageing face. I show clients photos of themselves over six years ago to see where they have lost fat, where new wrinkles have formed. • I recognise that client's expectations and goals change over the years and work with them to find the most effective program. • I respect the face and look at the face every time I treat - not just fill an area we did at the last session, a consideration to any changes to the face or medical history is paramount. BespoKe comBined treatments As an experienced practitioner I cannot recommend derma roller or skin needling treatments enough, they have proven clinical results and help treat patients suffering with acne scarring, so lifting out lines and wrinkles, closing pores and increasing the firmness and elasticity of the skin is achieved
also. e three treatments set out below can be tailored and prescribed for your skin needs after a thorough consultation. Derma roller or skin micro needling is a natural skin rejuvenation method that is able to soften wrinkles and scars. e process creates hundreds of microscopic ‘pinpricks’ to activate your body’s wound healing process. As your skin heals it uses your own collagen to fill the valleys of wrinkles and scars, great for open pores, sun damage and uneven skin tone. power Booster Facial roller Based on a hyaluronic acid gel closely resembling your body's own, Restylane Skinboosters are designed to restore hydration in the skin, resulting in long lasting improvements in skin quality and condition. A series of tiny injections, made more comfortable with an anaesthetic called lidocaine included in the range, are given resulting in improved skin tone and skin elasticity. I use this on all skin types and it can be great for older skin, sun damaged, stressed skin or to help treat mild acne scars. Brightening and illuminating Facial roller e synergy of antioxidant protection is that it repairs skin and protects it from aggressions, cell oxygenation helps to helps to achieve cell replacement meaning new healthy skin tissue, and depigmenting of the skin which helps to repair and block melanin production which leads to discolouration and sun damage. is amazing combination peel makes it ideal for those wanting to improve blemishes, sun damage, acne scars and ageing skin. liFting and Firming Facial roller Sagging jawlines, loss of volume to cheeks and chins and fine lines and wrinkles can all be addressed with non-surgical techniques which provide a softer result than the traditional surgical face lift which focuses on only using tightening the skin rather than re-introducing volume. e most suitable volumising filler will be chosen for you, this depends on skin type and quality of the skin, ageing of the skin and suitability for a particular product. is treatment helps you achieve the perfect balance and harmony for your face. ■ Please view prices online under the bespoke treatment section and call Michelle to book in for your consultation.

HEaLTH & BEaUTY
THE HYPOXI WAY Being too busy to exercise can be a common excuse for mums, how can Hypoxi help? Our programmes are designed for busy lifestyles in general as Hypoxi takes only 30-40 minutes of your time, 3 times a week. Taking into account how much time we spend on e.g. shopping, we can find 30 minutes to spend on making our bodies healthier and fitter. I am a mother myself to 4 year old Sofia and always find time to exercise. Time management and life balance is the key to our success. Our opening hours are 10-9pm during the week and 10-3pm Saturday and Sunday. No excuse! Which workouts would you suggest are more ideal for mums trying to get back into shape? For the ladies who are more apple-shaped, I would advise Hypoxi Vacunaut which gets rid of unwanted fat from the stomach, back and arms and also tones the hips and legs. As for the ladies who are pear-shaped, I would advise Hypoxi Dermologie (an anti-cellulite and skin toning bed) and Hypoxi Bike S120 & L250 which targets lower belly, hips, legs and thighs. Each person would be assessed individually during a FREE consultation once a quick questionnaire is completed. After this, I measure, weigh and assess the body shape and discuss options of our courses. A 20 Minutes Trial session is advised as we need to make sure that a client is happy with the treatment before committing to a course. What else would you advise apart from using the Hypoxi machine? It is crucial to consume a meal centred on carbohydrates before the treatment followed by proteins after the sessions. I also highly recommend keeping active and positive in order to boost your body to lose weight. We very often get stressed, which then causes our body to reject steady weight loss. You need to relax and start your exercise with a healthy attitude and you will definitely be successful. Additionally, we provide a variety of exclusive products such as slimming creams, toning serums, L-Carnitine shots, pure protein shakes and zero carb drinks, which will enhance the results even more so. How often do they need to attend your studio and why? e recommendation is 3 sessions a week, every other day, to
4 4 april 2015
optimise results with a one day break so that your body can rest. e science behind HYPOXI technology is based on 3 methods, cupping, compression and positive/negative pressure, which increases blood circulation in cold areas of your body. Because of this, you will still be burning fat tissue for at least 8 hours after your HYPOXI session and then you will need 12 hours rest. Do you have any workout/motivational tips you can share? My main advice is to be patient as two weeks after starting a HYPOXI course; you will start seeing visible results much quicker than gym workouts. Additionally, give yourself small, achievable goals for example “I will lose 2 kilograms this week”, “I will eat healthier this week”, “I will avoid sugary and high calories products this week”, “I will not eat after 6:30pmm, regardless of the circumstances.” I guarantee after 1 week you will feel better and then you can make a list of more goals for following week. Such as: “I will feel energetic and motivated”, “I will eat a healthy breakfast and no supper”. e key success is to keep positive and do not listen to anyone but listen to your own body. Anything else you would like to add? Life is full of rules and duties so why not make it happy and healthy? We very often forget to invest into ourselves. ■

T
ake someone with absolute determination, mix them with a very different but highly-effective product and you’ll get a pretty potent result. In a world where we are awash with beauty salons that do much of the same thing, this is a very refreshing idea. is ‘something different’ is far from a fad that has gathered pace on the back of so many celebrity ideals (we’re all saturated with Spirulina and buried in bee venom), it has ancient roots dating back at least 5,000 years and is a holistic medicine encompassing a broad range of therapies including skin care. It is called Ayurveda and Sona Patel has harnessed its power in her treatments to heal and nourish the skin. Sona has always had this path in
mind and despite being encouraged to study the sciences, take her degree in Economics, and begin her career in a corporate environment; her passion for Ayurveda and creating the ultimate skin solution was unwavering. Part of this drive was her own issue with skin problems; she suffered from acne well into her late 20’s and while other mainstream products provided a temporary cure, they would eventually stop working. In her view: ‘Chemical based products – and most mainstream products are of this variety – may have short term effects but the body will start to reject them. is happened to me time and time again until I found a pure Ayurvedic solution, since then I have never looked back as they quite literally saved my skin.’ Ayurveda goes way beyond skin care and encompasses a top-to-toe analysis of lifestyle, nutrition, and state of mind to find the root cause of skin problems. At Arissa Beauty, Sona has embraced this notion and creates bespoke facials based on a thorough consultation of internal wellbeing. Her ethos is that everyone is different and a bulk-standard treatment menu cannot cater for this. Her attention to detail is not only applied to facials but also what she refers to as the more ‘general’ treatments such as waxing, threading, laser and LPG body shaping. e focus is on the individual and their particular goals and as such, every anxiety is explored and ironed out. And as everything else in the world seems to be speeding up through technology and our own expectations, someone out there needs to take the bull by the horns and slow us down. Take time out, get off the treadmill and make an investment in yourself. Next month: Ayurveda vs cosmetic solutions – when ‘pure’ is far from it. ■

etired bounty lady, Lynda spent her days on maternity wards with new born babies. at is where she first came across Smile Design by Ash. "A colleague of mine, Lily recommended me to Ash after she heard I needed some help with my teeth". Lynda first visited Smile Design by Ash in 2014 for a complimentary consultation when she had begun to struggle with eating. “When I first came to the practice it was very welcoming, a really nice, clean, comfortable environment.” Lynda had a crown and porcelain veneers that she had become unhappy with over the years due to their lack of strength and stability. After having the full assessment it was clear Lynda had some underlying dental issues she was unaware of that lead to the loss of her upper front teeth. “Having treatment was quite difficult for me at first as I had no idea what to expect. Ash was very reassuring and was happy to share with me what would be happening during each of my dental appointments which made me feel at ease.” Together Ash and Lynda decided the strongest option to replace Lynda’s missing teeth would be dental implants. Lynda
had two implants placed to replace the three missing teeth and a three teeth porcelain bridge. is was the strongest and most cost effective solution to Lynda’s problem. “e treatment was very comfortable. When I tell people about the treatment I have had they can’t believe that I have spent that much time in a dental chair and have not felt any pain!” After a year’s worth of treatment Lynda has a beautiful, natural smile that will be strong and long lasting. “People don’t notice that I have had my teeth done which I think is brilliant. I am really pleased as to how natural they are and I often get comments on how lovely my smile is.” “Ash is a lovely, caring person. He is very experienced and can read people very well. He would always know if I was slightly apprehensive or worried and helped to put me at ease. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending my family and friends to Smile Design by Ash.” ■ Do you struggle with eating? Are you self-conscious or unhappy with your smile? SWIM
Q&A WIth AnDrEW GInGEr frOM OrIGIn LEISurE, thE uK’S LEADInG DESIGnErS AnD BuILDErS Of hOME SWIMMInG pOOLS. Q. How much does it cost? is is usually the first thing people ask when considering adding a pool to their home, but the truth is there’s no set answer. It can vary considerably depending on the size and style of your project. e starting price for an outdoor pool is around £65,000, while an indoor project from concept to completion usually costs £150,000 to £350,000 upwards. You’ll also need to consider the ongoing costs for heating, chemicals and maintenance, which depends on the style of swimming pool, the season, the water temperature and the heat source. at said, we will work with you to ensure the end cost is in line with your budget.
Q.Why do people choose to have their own swimming pool? Be it indoor or outdoor, a pool adds another space in the home where you and your family can have fun, relax and entertain. It creates an extra social space and can have seating, kitchen and bar areas to enjoy time with friends. Children and grandchildren will have hours of fun in the pool, and it’s a great place to spend time together as a family. A swimming pool also has health benefits as it enables you to exercise using the pool, gym, sauna and spa in the privacy of your garden. Alternatively, it can be used as a space to relax and unwind, and the lighting, sound and water movement can be designed to create a ‘chill out’ space for you and your family. Q.How much say do I have in the design of the pool? Every swimming pool we design and build is different as we work closely with customers to create a pool individual to them, to suit their lifestyle and budget. You can decide on all elements of the internal structure, from the style of the building and colour scheme to the internal, external and roof finishes, but we also know that the devil is in the detail. e design choices range from the shape, size and depth of the pool, to the tiling, motifs, steps, liners and covers – the only limit is your imagination!

Be it indoor or outdoor, a pool adds another space in the home where you and your family can have fun, relax and entertain. Q.Who takes charge of managing the project? Origin Leisure is unlike any other swimming pool company as we manage the whole installation process from concept to completion. Rather than hiring separate companies for each element of the build, Origin Leisure will handle everything. With us, you’ll have one point of contact that will be available to answer questions and talk you through the process from start to finish.
Q. How long will it take to build the swimming pool, from start to finish? e length of time it will take varies from project to project. But to get a good idea of the project length and the cost of swimming pool installation, it’s best to book a free on-site consultation with one of Origin Leisure’s experienced advisers. Origin Leisure is an award winning company with over 30 years experience creating beautiful bespoke swimming pools, designed to your specification. First Ever National Open Gardens Day Launched Many gardens to open for FREE on Friday of National Gardening Week
A
s part of this year’s National Gardening Week (13–19 April), gardens all over Britain that normally charge for entry or are closed to the public will be opening their doors for free on Friday 17 April in a unified effort to engage more people with the UK’s great gardens. The aim of National Open Gardens Day is to raise awareness of the diversity, richness and cultural value of the UK’s gardens and encourage new segments of the public to experience and value them. The four RHS Gardens are leading the campaign with many RHS Partner Gardens, some National Gardens Scheme gardens and many more joining the campaign and opening on the day. Please check www.nationalgardeningweek.org.uk for details of events before confirming your plans. Colin Crosbie, Curator at RHS Garden Wisley, said: “The UK’s gardens are as valuable, beautiful and important as our museums and national parks and should be just as cherished. They provide people with enjoyment, relaxation and delight, and give urban dwellers green spaces. Gardens educate people about biodiversity and food security, and preserve our great plant collections. British gardens, in particular, attract tourists to our shores and provide employment to thousands. “We are extremely lucky to have so many beautiful and diverse gardens in the UK and would like as many people as possible – particularly those who are new to garden visiting – to enjoy and value gardens and join the celebrations on National Open Gardens Day.” 5 2 april 2015
National Open Gardens Day is taking place during National Gardening Week, which was launched by the RHS four years ago and has grown into one of the UK’s largest celebrations of gardening. Last year more than 240 events were held during the week at gardens, museums, community groups and parks across the UK. The success of National Gardening Week is set continue this year with the RHS, National Trust, RSPB, NGS and hundreds of gardens, retailers, gardeners and charities planning activities, events, giveaways and openings. National Gardening Week and National Open Gardens Day are supported by a collaboration with upcoming gardening-themed period drama A Little Chaos, which is directed by Alan Rickman and stars Kate Winslet as a 17thcentury landscape gardener. Visitors to selected gardens on National Open Gardens Day will get a chance to win tickets to the film, which premieres on 13 April and opens in UK cinemas on 17 April. Heavenly Interiors C
onversion opportunities are as diverse as the number of buildings around, and redundant churches can make for the most surprisingly unusual and exciting conversions. Thanks to the Victorians, who built so many surplus churches that the pews weren’t even being filled in the 1800s, a large number of these striking buildings fell out of use long ago. In 1969 the law changed to allow the release of churches for alternative purposes and, since then, over 200 have been converted. Converting a church yields several distinct design issues. Planners are unlikely to allow any major external alterations as they will want to retain the original character of the building, and existing windows and doors should be retained and restored with sensitivity. If additional light is needed for a new first floor it may be possible to insert conservation rooflights. Luckily, churches aren’t that hard to find: a list of redundant churches is available from the Church Commissioners. They also publish a useful pamphlet, New Uses for Redundant Churches, which provides a starting point for converters (020 7898 1000 or visit the website at churchcommissioners.org). You’ll need to run your ideas by the planners before making an offer, but when purchasing a church, the offer should be made to the local Diocesan Redundant Church Uses Committee. They put the offer to the Church
5 4 april 2015
Commissioners, who then make the final decision. As well as the planning department, you will also have to run any plans for architectural or structural changes to the Church Commissioners for approval. If the church has an attached graveyard, the law requires any human remains to be removed and interred somewhere else if the plans will affect them. Other than high ceilings and large windows, churches often have a convenient, central location. They’re ideal for open plan living and can provide the ultimate living space for homeowners that don’t necessarily require lots of bedrooms. A mezzanine level can work well, as it might be difficult to get permission for multiple rooms on ground level. Since there’s plenty of space to build vertically, there are excellent storage opportunities. The biggest advantage however is the architecture and unique features. Vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows and mullions are hard to beat. Not everyone will feel attracted to the idea of living in a church, but you have to agree that every time we see a beautiful conversion of a formal church into a beautiful residence… we want to see more. You wonder what makes a person buy a church or chapel and transform it into a home – if you are looking for vast open space, original features and a unique design, then it could be the answer to your prayers.

rom spirals to spindles, glass to granite, there’s plenty of scope for making a statement, but homeowners looking to transform their space are often unaware of the possibilities. The key is to understand your options and the impact building regulations may have. First and foremost, stairs need to fulfil their primary function of getting you from one level to the next, once this need is fulfilled, you can really go to town on the aesthetics and create something that gives a really great first impression. In terms of renovation, replacing a staircase is akin to knocking down a structural wall. But if your stairs are badly positioned, oppressive, or hinder light flow through the house, then it’s worth considering, as a new flight can make all the difference. Always consult an architect or a specialist company, as it’s critical that a new staircase fits in both proportionally and stylistically. Remember, also, that plans must comply with building regulations, specifically the Approved Document K or Protection, Falling and Impact, and in particular section K1, which deals with stairs, ladders and ramps. You can download it free from staircases.org/regulations.htm.
STRAIGHT STAIRS Straight doesn’t have to equal dull, and it’s possible to modernise less than lovely stairs with cladding, such as timber, tiles or stone. Many modern homes have stairs built in concrete, which is ideal for resurfacing. If you’re updating a less sturdy staircase, make sure it’s sound by cladding it with marine plywood before affixing any sort of tiles, otherwise they may crack. You can re-clad a staircase in oak for about £500-£1,000, depending on the balustrade you choose. This is a much more accessible solution if you would rather not embark on big structural changes, or are limited by space. SPIRAL AND HELICAL STAIRCASES Spiral staircases wind around a central pole and have a 5 8 april 2015
handrail on the outer side only. Helical stairs do not have a central pole and there is a handrail on both sides. If a spiral staircase is being used to access a single room, it must be at least 1500mm in diameter. But if the spiral goes up to more than one room, it is classed as a main staircase and needs to be at least 1900mm. Bear in mind that the opening in which your spiral fits needs to be 100mm wider than the spiral itself. A bespoke spiral would start at £3,000. It can be difficult to get furniture up and down, so move large items in before you install the stairs. CARPETED STAIRS If you prefer carpet to bare wood or glass, make sure you buy one that’s suitable for stairs. It’s imperative you choose a quality, hard-wearing carpet – 80% wool to 20% nylon. Avoid loop-pile carpets as they “grin” (open up when bent) and are more slippery. Use a good underlay over both tread and riser and fit the carpet so the pile runs down the stairs. It’s also possible to use a strip of carpet as a runner, see Roger Oates Design Hartley runners, which are reversible so last twice as long. CANTILEVERED STAIRS A cantilevered staircase can look stunning, but is also a feat of engineering, with most of the weight of the treads supported by one wall. You need a balustrade to comply with UK building regulations, but glass is unobtrusive and will still give that ‘weightlessness’ look. These staircases should always be designed and built by a specialist. ALTERNATE STAIRS Ninety per cent of new staircases are constructed to create access to a loft conversion. The pitch of the roof can make constructing a flight difficult and, if this is the case, alternate-tread stairs can be the answer. These have one tread for the left foot and another for the right, and mean the angle of the stairs can be tighter, increased from 42 to 65 degrees. Consider who will need to use them, as they are trickier to negotiate than standard stairs. It can also be hard to move furniture up and down them.

doing things differently
Petty’s are committed to giving back to the local community
A
little over a year ago, Petty Son and Prestwich opened the doors of their new office here in Buckhurst Hill. Following on from their success in Wanstead, Petty’s Director, John Wagstaff, felt that their approach to selling homes was just what the area needed and - judging by their success - he has been proved right. “We tend to do things a little differently from other agents he says. “We pride ourselves on fantastic customer service and our attention to detail is second to none. People want to be treated as though they matter. At the Buckhurst Hill branch they have been delighted with the results of their first year. “It’s always nice to be able to say it’s been better than expected, but it really has”, he says. “Not only because we have started the year with a really healthy list of properties for sale and properties which are under offer. Considering we are only just out of our first year, we’re over the moon with how things have progressed. We are also very pleased that we have been able to help local schools, Loughton cricket club and other local charities during that time too”. John is quick to stress that the Buckhurst Hill branch would not have enjoyed the success that it has in its first year without the staff. As soon as they had settled on the office they knew exactly who they wanted to work there. ey recruited two of the most experienced agents in the area – Catherine Bransgrove and Jenny West and this decisive move has paid dividends. With over 50 years’
experience in local estate agencies between them, there is no other team in the area that can even come close to the level of knowledge that they have. eir understanding of the market is also matched by their ability to put customers at ease while going through what is widely regarded as a very stressful time. e branch added another extremely experienced member of staff, Elaine Robinson shortly afterwards and between them all, along with Jenny Wagstaff they have built on their early successes and now have a very busy office indeed. Whilst moving people quickly and professionally is their number one priority, it’s nice to see that they still have time for the community too. Petty’s are constantly giving back to the local area by publicising community events. It certainly is a welcome change from the stereotypical image that many have of estate agents, that’s for sure. So, if you’re looking to sell your property or buy now or anytime in the future, be sure to pop into their office in Queens Road for a chat. ■

FIND THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS AT
ARBORETUM
W
ith prices in London continuing to rise by 10% from last year1, a study by Hamptons International2 found that Londoners are increasingly looking outside the capital for new homes. e study found that those working in the city bought 58,000 properties beyond its boundaries last year; a 50% increase from 2013. Although many Londoners are now choosing to move away from the capital, 80% of buyers are deciding to instead buy homes in some of London’s most desirable commuter towns. One couple following this trend was partners Amanda Davies, 44 and Wayne Bridger, 46. Having been together for six years, Amanda and Wayne decided it was time to purchase their own property together. With Amanda choosing to relocate from Cardiff to London, she wanted to ensure she could live in rural bliss whilst also having an easy commute to work in central London. e couple found a balance between town and country when they bought off plan, their 3 bedroom house at Higgins Home’s Arboretum development in Epping. Amanda, a business manager for Dior comments, “Wayne and I met on holiday six years ago and have been together ever since. I relocated from Cardiff to London where I previously used to rent but it was just the right place and the right time for me to relocate here. It’s where I really wanted to live, I feel so lucky as I’ve got countryside as well as city life with the station only a 10-15 minute walk away. It’s the perfect balance between the two, the best of both worlds. I just find it so peaceful here.” Along with the developments ideal location, the couple wanted to ensure they moved to an area where they felt comfortable and welcome. Wayne, a financial consultant continues, “e thing with a development like this is that it’s like a little community. We surround the centre garden island, so we are all in a big circle which means we will be able to see our neighbours a lot; we’ve already met some lovely people. It’s one of those places that feels like you can knock on your neighbour’s door anytime.” Amanda and Wayne bought their property in May 2014 and were one of the first to buy off plan at Arboretum. Amanda describes their experience of buying off plan, “We were really lucky to get first pick as we had the choice of any plot we wanted! I enjoy looking at property, I love the property market! I’m always on Rightmove and that’s where I saw this development come up and 8 2 april 2015
knew it was exactly the type of new build that we wanted. When we visited and saw the plans – we just fell in love” Wayne continues, “We had previously put another property on hold within a mile radius of the Arboretum, but we dropped it as soon as we saw this one. It was more expensive and had nowhere near the same high quality style or finish to it. Our advice would be that if you have a gut feeling then you just need to go for it, if you wait too long you could lose the plot you love.” Since the launch of Arboretum, the large scale development is already 80% sold and, once complete, will comprise 149 new homes ranging from two bedroom apartments to three, four and five bedroom houses. Whether a first time buyer, starter family or early downsizer, the various apartment types and house designs provide something for everyone. Spanning a total of 3.6 hectares and surrounded by ancient woodlands, the development will also include 1.8 hectares of open green space and a landscaped garden square. e apartments boast en-suite facilities and outdoor balcony space whilst all homes are finished to a high specification with high gloss fitted kitchens by Commodore kitchens, integrated Smeg and Siemens appliances and bathroom suites by Ideal Standard. e homes also come with allocated parking whilst selected properties include a garage and rear garden. Just a ten to fifteen minute walk from the development, Epping underground station runs regular central line services to Liverpool Street in just 37 minutes and to Oxford Circus in no more than 47 minutes. e nearby M11 and M25 motorways also provide an easy route to surrounding the towns and greater London. Currently, a selection of two bedroom apartments are available from £345,000, in addition to a collection of 4 and 5 bedroom priced from £650,000. Help To Buy is also available for the apartments. ■
