Repton’s Got Talent, opened by the Mayor Councillor Felicity Banks, once more pulled in the punters, creating the perfect fundraising platform in aid of Haven House Children’s Hospice. Taking to the main stage to the delight of the 1,000 generous spectators attending on the day, past Britain’s Got Talent contestants stole the show – we take a closer look at a fun filled day in aid of a great local cause. As Armistice Day approaches, we all take time to consider the heroes who have died in wars; to pay our respects and to wear the poppy, a symbol of remembrance. Epping War Memorial is a powerful reminder of our local heroes, their plight and sacrifice so we should live in peace and freedom. On a recent visit, Michelle Harris took time to read the names: to consider their heroism and what they must have endured, whether those rat-infested trenches in World War I, or to have struggled in the early part of World War II before the final victory. at the fathers who fought in World War I, should also send their sons into battle, and the brave daughters who supported the military campaigns. Promo2u, based in Chingford, East London, has won the prestigious Mayor's Award for Best Small Business Apprentice Employer. e company, which offers a unique range of promotional products, was nominated for the award by the Federation of Small Businesses. After picking up orders for the 2012 Olympics, the management team at Promo2u re-invested the profits to employ and train an apprentice to grow the business. As a result Waleed Ali was recruited. Brentwood has certainly become a hotspot of Essex activity. Due to on-going popularity as a key area within TOWIE (e Only Way is Essex) – Brentwood epitomises the pinnacle of Essex fun – has a significant cultural side with respect to the cathedral – great for retail therapy – the High Street offers everything from great restaurants to book stores such as Waterstones. If looking to live in one of Brentwood’s most beautiful areas – Hutton Mount is the place. Detached and sumptuous homes worth in excess of £1 million are strategically located along quiet roads, which meander into elegant picture-book turnings, where each street offers aesthetic beauty and fabulous, individually styled, grand properties. As usual, we have our regular health and beauty columns from Ash Parmar and Frances Furlong. We have a variety of tips and ideas to enhance your home and a new vehicle from Essex Audi. Enjoy your issue and we look forward to seeing you again in November.

Bonfires, Fireworks and Guy Fawkes FOLLOWING ON FROM HALLOWEEN IS BONFIRE NIGHT. IT’S A GREAT WEEK FOR FUN AND FIREWORKS.

WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

F

or those not familiar with the history of Bonfire Night and to quickly précis, Guy Fawkes, (Guido Fawkes) born on 13 April 1570 and died on 31 January 1606. A soldier who had fought in Spain (hence changing his name to Guido) he sided with Catholic Spain against the Protestant Dutch reformers. He tried to instigate support for a Catholic rebellion in England but was unsuccessful. Subsequent to his introduction to Robert Catesby, together with other conspirators John Wright, omas Wintour, omas Percy, Robert Keyes, omas Bates, Robert Wintour, Christopher Wright, John Grant, Ambrose Rookwood, Sir Everard Digby and Francis Tresham, collectively they devised a plot to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of England's Parliament on 5 November 1605, thereby killing all present and also assassinating King James I of England and VI of Scotland. eir intention was to replace the King with a Catholic monarch. Having secured a lease for the cellar underneath the House of Lords, Guy Fawkes (as a former soldier) was given the responsibility of guarding the explosives, but the authorities had received an anonymous ‘tip-off ’ and searched Westminster Palace in the early hours of November 5th, 1605 and found him there with the thirty-six barrels of gunpowder. He was subsequently questioned (tortured) – he was sentenced to death by being hung, drawn and quartered. However he jumped off the scaffold, broke this neck and therefore spared himself this most heinous demise. So on that basis, every year, we have a Bonfire Night. Some fires will include the burning of an effigy (named appropriately Guy) but generally, it’s a firework display.

EPPING’S WAR Memorial and Heroes WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

As Armistice Day approaches, we all take time to consider the heroes who have died in wars; to pay our respects and to wear the poppy, a symbol of remembrance: The poppy is an instantly recognisable symbol of Remembrance, so those sacrifices are never forgotten.

E

pping War Memorial is a powerful reminder of our local heroes, their plight and sacrifice so we should live in peace and freedom. On my last visit, I took time to read the names: to consider their heroism and what they must have endured, whether those rat-infested trenches in World War I, or to have struggled in the early part of World War II before the final victory. at the fathers who fought in World War I, should also send their sons into battle. Ironically and despite the Epping War Memorial being such an important icon, it took an incredible three years from an original meeting at Epping Urban District Council in 1919 until the unveiling on May 8th, 1921. Only half the local residents were present for the occasion. If interested in Epping’s history and its role during the wars, it is imperative to visit the North Weald Airfield Museum which is a short bus ride or drive away on the B181 Epping to Ongar Road. e Airfield has a significant link to the Battle of Britain (the first major war campaign to be fought entirely by the air forces) during August 1940. For World War II enthusiasts, the museum has a Battle of Britain room which details this famous battle and the 39 crew members who died trying to defend this airfield and local area. Unfortunately, Epping was very badly hit

16

OCTOBER2013

during World War II and many local residents perished. Probably the best indication of World War I conditions is the powerful and poignant poetry, written by the great First World War poets. Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen (especially his famous and vividly disturbing poem, Dulce et Decorum est ) Rosenberg et al, but Epping too had its poets and as recently as 2008, a poem was discovered by John Duffell whilst researching dead soldiers (from World War I) at Colindale Library. Although the identity of the poet is unknown, we know he was an Epping man who whilst contemplating his home town, wrote in these two opening lines: “Often in the trench I think of those poor chaps at home, Of perils that surround them, wherever they may roam;” He felt that life at home was more dangerous than being at war: “And ask them, for their safety, to come out here with me.” Aside local poetry, many letters were published from Epping soldiers, notably from Trooper A. Juniper (died in October 1918) who noted: “I cannot express my feelings in words … it helps us out here to know that people of the old town are thinking of us.” Hopefully, the heroes from all our local communities will never be forgotten n

epton’s Got Talent hit the right notes last month when the exclusive development in Woodford Green threw open its gates to the public for the second annual Repton Park Family Funday in aid of Children’s Hospice Haven House. e family fun day extravaganza included guest presenters hosting live acts including Leanne Jarvis from “e Voice” and Youth Creation Dance from “Britain’s Got Talent”. Celebrity Gary Lucy, currently in BBC TV’s East Enders, stopped to guess the number of ducks in the bath, a fundraiser set up by local retailer Lloyd Moulder co-founder of South Woodford designer bathroom supplier BathWorks. Lloyd chose the event to launch his charity champion bid to raise £10,000 for Haven House Children’s Hospice over the coming twelve months. BathWorks is celebrating 10 years in business with a partnership with the Woodford Green charity also celebrating 10 years of caring. Gary Lucy said “I am a great admirer of Haven House and keen to support its work. is has been a great event and I wish Lloyd all the best for his charity challenge.” Haven House cares for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions who are unlikely to reach adulthood. It provides specialist nursing care and support for the wider family to ease the burden of care. Homes, Maintenance and Spills… WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

W

hen you’re a home owner, there are always chores that need attention. Mending a loose roof tile, clearing leaves from the front lawn or paving, perhaps a bit of damp in some obscure corner. Just as one job is complete, another area merits address. Fortunately, living in Essex there are many trades personnel who can help us look after our homes/offices etc. however there is something liberating about just doing it yourself… Very few of us actually have the time or even in the inclination but knowing you don’t have to wait in, that any outdoor work is not dependent upon a sunny day when the painter/builder/gardener is due to arrive because as we all know, it always rains, just before their arrival and the appointment is cancelled. As the female of the house, unfortunately, I often feel as if I’m in a time warp of ‘oooohhh would love a cup of tea’ then the obligatory half-an-hour tea break whilst drink is consumed. Despite my suggesting they bring a flask, or even when I’ve left a full urn of hot water, box of tea-bags and carton of milk invariably, if needing to help themselves, it doesn’t happen and I find myself promoted from writer to tea-lady. I have even been asked for a selection of sandwiches, fried eggs on toast or omelette. Tempting though it is to say ‘no’ – I succumb and hope the end result will be enhanced by a full belly and bladder. So if I’m not doing the work, instead I’m ensuring a steady supply of hot beverages, builders’ bikkies (biscuits such as Bourbons, Custard Creams and Jammie Dodgers…) so 9 times out of 10 – I might as well have done the job myself. So with all this in mind, my fence at the front of the house needed painting. It wasn’t raining, no prior appointment had been necessary and it was a convenient time. I had the paint and brushes in the garage and a recent acquisition of a little garden chair to ensure my comfort. Sitting at the front of my house with a mug of brew, I was happily painting away. As each of my neighbours walked past, we had a little chat. Caught up on all the gossip, the street’s highlights and concerns. I realised how little time we have for chit-chat with those who live nearest to us. Even my next door neighbour whilst going on her errands chatted with me on her way out… and on her way back. We discussed how Americans sit on their porches on large, wooden swings. We laughed about setting a trend in our street. Errand turned into a sociable activity and it was fun. So the job was done. Packing up tools and equipment – I admired my work and prided myself on a job well done… UNTIL I walked around to the other side of the fence and noticed how I had slopped paint on my neighbour’s fence. ere were dribbles and splodges of brown paint on what was her pristine, green fence. Feeling terribly guilty, I have now offered to sort out her fence – does anybody know a painter? Even a very thirsty one…

HALLOWEEN FUN IN BRENTWOOD WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

With an option of two walks - 5km for adults and youngsters (7-16) and a 2km walk, including treasure hunt, for children aged between 4 and 16 years. Please note that it’s imperative to wear a Halloween outfit and to embrace the spirit of the event! But if you’re not a walker – spectators are welcome. Refreshments: e café will be open and there will be a Mulled Wine Stall to warm up those who feel chilly from the outdoor excursion. www.halloween-scare-thorndon.org.uk SPOOKY BAT HUNT Venue: orndon Country Park South, Brentwood Road, Brentwood, CM13 3LW Date: 26th – 29th October Time: 10.30 a.m. – 3.30 p.m. Price: £1.00 per trail guide Car Parking: (Pay and Display): SatNav – CM13 3LW Contact: 01277 211250 Pick up a trail guide from the Pavilion Café and lead yourselves around the woods. Or use a gingerbread biscuit recipe and cut out in the shape of a cross with R.I.P. carefully piped in white icing. Simple recipes can be easily adapted and for those who are rather more adventurous, how many recipes can be made out of a pumpkin? Whether sweet recipes for a pumpkin pie to a savoury pumpkin risotto.

H

alloween is fun. Whether making a costume for a party, carving out pumpkins, meeting with friends and sitting in a dark room, telling scary ghost stories or watching horror films, there are endless ways to enjoy being with friends and/or family. Observed in many countries, October 31st is the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows (or All Saints). ere is an opinion that the festival possibly has pagan roots – particularly Celtic Samhain but whether pagan or Christian, for most of us, Halloween is about pumpkins, trick-or-treating, playing pranks, visiting an allegedly haunted house and an excuse for a get together. THERE ARE SOME WONDERFUL EVENTS IN BRENTWOOD – HALLOWEEN CHARITY WALK Venue: orndon Country Park, e Avenue, Brentwood, Essex, CM13 3RZ Date: Sunday, 27th October Times: 5 km walk starts at 11.00 a.m. prompt and the 2 km walk at 11.30 a.m. Charity: All monies raised through donations and sponsorships will be shared between the Rotary Club of Brentwood and Cancer Research UK. BRENTWOOD and the Beautiful Hutton Mount WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

B

rentwood has certainly become a hotspot of Essex activity. Some could easily be the setting for televised period dramas. Most of the properties have the perfect gardens to enjoy a relaxing summer’s day or party: or nocturnal soiree with friends and/or family. Offering all the residential benefits for those who prefer the high life, where entertaining at home can facilitate a whole array of fabulous settings and scenarios. Brentwood is certainly synonymous for beautiful properties, so

28

OCTOBER2013

it is not entirely surprising to learn there are two Brentwoods! e other Brentwood is situated in Los Angeles, California. e US namesake is situated near the prestigious Wilshire Boulevard, Bel-Air and Pacific Palisades! So whether TOWIE or Beverly Hills 90210 – Brentwood symbolises glamour, intrigue and party. But back to reality and practicality. Brentwood is only 18 miles from London so convenient for commuters using rail links, the motorway or mail roads. Also for those travelling abroad for holidays or on business trips, Brentwood is strategically located within an hour of main and local airports. Yet despite its close proximity to the city and a bustling town centre and industrial parks, residents also enjoy the benefits of beautiful villages, parks, farmlands. Brentwood Cathedral, the ruins of St. omas a Becket Chapel and Brentwood Museum which has famous exhibits and objects which date from 1840-1950. For the younger members of the family: Hutton Country Park, orndon Country Park and the Hopefield Animal Sanctuary. Great days out and probably worth considering before summer runs out... Bentley Golf Club (Ongar Road, Brentwood CM15 9SS) is very popular and allegedly has some very challenging golf courses. Perhaps visiting the Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker? Not such a secret as it’s at Kelvedon Hall Lane, Brentwood CM14 5TL. Recommended to bring a picnic for a full day’s excursion as there are many interesting places within the grounds. Recreationally, Brentwood town centre has a terrific array of shops from multiples like Marks & Spencer and Currys, with a varied and exciting array of restaurants. e parades and hidden back streets off the main high road have specialist shops which are a delight to meander and to look for unusual treats either personally or for the home. Most recently, it has been reported that new traders are moving into the area, and other established businesses are renovating their interiors. Brentwood is truly one of Essex’s beautiful gems, a great place to live, and a fascinating town to visit with so much to offer from outdoor recreation for all the family to cultural pursuits, shopping and dining…

You)d have been forgiven for thinking you)d stepped into the A Autumn/W utu umn/W Winter shows as London Fashion Week ee took over the capital once more; dark palettes, heavy-duty fabrics, longer cuts and geometric prints for spring and summer replaced the usual suspects of saccharine brights, ethereal materials, barelythere lengths and all-out florals. Though some requisite summer touches - think lace, think florals, think sunny hues - did break through, the spring/summer catwalks held onto a decidedly y,, well, wintery feel. A subversive undercurrent ran through collections at Tom Ford, Simone Rocha and Giles with rips, zips and moody concoctions of black, grey and browns. Even the king of summer, Christopher Kane, turned the dial on his collection, offering florals with a sociopolitical undertone (diagrams on flowers were used to highlight the inadequacies of sex education). And the anarchical theme continued as traditionally autumnal boxy tops, sheeny metallics, brocade and leather made unapologetic appearances . Though prints were out in force,? , )s flowers and heady neon splices made way for geometric touches, spots, lines and checks. But it wasn)t all dark and stormy; a hint

PRINGLE OF SCOTL AND Pringle of Scotland is the iconic brand founded in 1815 at the birthplace of the Scottish knitwear industry. Their spring/ summer 2014 womenswear collection embraces contrasting influences to create unexpected juxtapositions; graphic panels are offset with elliptical seams, structural couture fabrics are paired with relaxed knitted elements, and sharp silhouettes are gathered to create volume. The brand)s iconic argyle diamonds are used as a thematic thread that evolves throughout the collection, rooting the designs in the brand)s heritage but offering fresh treatments and techniques to transformative effect. Intarsia twinsets feature diamonds entwined together to resemble the mesh of fencing, whilst woven jacquards in porcelain blue and white present diamonds with varying placements and scales and knitted jacquards showcase fragmented argyles that are overlaid with hand beading for textural detail. this tactile interpretation is further developed through a raised argyle knitted sleeveless sweater with hand knit trim. the geometric grid patterns intrinsic to argyle are then realised through a fine lace stitch knit, which is then replicated through macramĂŠ that ranges in scale from delicate panels on skirts and bomber jackets, to a more structured oversized macramĂŠ

t-shirt and skirt. the open weave of macramĂŠ provides inspiration for an open slash stitch knit dress in electric blue worn as a twinset with matching cardigan, and a knitted silk dress combines macramĂŠ and pointelle across exaggerated fully fashioned seams. a game of opposites is explored through the combination of textures used on one garment; couture silk sits with knitted jersey and macramĂŠ on a bomber jacket and skirt. this opposition can also be seen in the use of exaggerated contrast colours and trims; an off white leather vest with knitted back is enlivened with bright geranium leather sides, and an electric blue/ navy bomber features contrasting white leather piping. the use of these contradictory colours and materials makes for a collection that is both tough and feminine, pairing the ease and flow of knitwear with the structure and formality of couture fabrics. BURBERR RY PRORSUM Burberry Prorsum showed its womenswear Spring/Summer 2014 collection, English Rose), in London)s Hyde Park. Guests included Sienna Miller, Harry Styles, Paloma Faith, Alexa Chung, Poppy Delevingne and Donna Air. The show was also a celebration of Burberry Beauty y, as the first womenswear show since the brand brought the category in house. The Spring/Summer 2014 makeup look and next season)s Burberry Nails collection were unveiled: six nail colours, launching in January 2014.

PAUL SMITH The Paul Smith collection was mainly based on roomy y, semi-sev sem enties shapes with the brand,s signature men,s tailoring. MULBERR RY Emma Hill certainly pulled out all the stops for her final sho ow w as a creative director of Mulberry in the Spring 2014 collection shown at London

Fashion Week. The collection varied in prints, textures, shapes and colour, and was beautiful through and through. From sixties inspired prints to sporty silhouettes and all-white ensembles there was nothing that wasn,t executed perfectly y. We also saw bold prints on minimalist shapes, a hint of sheer coming through on a broad stripe and leather worn on leather. The sho ow w was also the debut of the new Mulberry handbag, the Kensal. With all this in mind, the Mulberry sho ow w was everything a girl could wish for in a final farewell. ASHISH Sequins galore! What else would you expect from an Ashish show? They were everywhere,

from jeans to bags. As well as sequins, we saw the Coca Cola logo cropping up over and over again, on tees trown over ripped sequin trousers, for a totally glam-grunge look that seemed thrown together in the coolest of ways. We loved the rainbow sequined trousers and the zebra and leopard print dress, and the best thing about the sho ow w was the DIY feel to all of it. Pass the sequins please! MA ATTHEW WILLIAMSON Matthew Williamson,s show teetered between business and boho, there was sharp tailoring which contrasted with billowing floral maxi dresses. Changing Peoples' Lives... BY ASH PARMAR

I

t has been a busy few weeks for me at Smile Design By Ash. is week, I thought I would write about some of the interesting things going on in my professional life at the moment. Having returned from a recent family holiday in Turkey, I felt refreshed and revitalized, as I know I have a hectic schedule right up to Christmas. One of my academic responsibilities is dental education. At the end of September, I did a lecture in Lincoln to a group of about thirty dentists. I gave a lot of clinical tips and they seemed to be fascinated by some of the innovative treatments that we offer using lasers and fibre-reinforced white fillings. I am also training twelve dentists on a unique 8-day Course I run annually. is is one of the most comprehensive training programmes available in the UK. In October and November, eight patients will have a Smile Makeover done by the dentists under my supervision. is will not only

change the patients’ lives but also the dentists’ lives due to the new high standards that they will work to. Another big thing for us this year is that we have entered in seven categories of e Private Dentistry Awards. We are pleased to have been shortlisted as finalists in all the seven categories, including Dental Practice Of e Year. On November 1st will be the actual Awards ceremony, bit like the Oscars of the dental industry. My staff and I are excited about attending this prestigious event and

hopefully we will have some success… We are also looking forward to the forthcoming prime time Channel 4 TV programme in October called Undo Me, on which we will be featured. We treated a patient called Nasser who had two gold bridges that were very visible in his mouth. He had these by choice when he was younger, but then more recently regretted having these. e TV cameras followed his story and filmed me doing his treatment. As Nasser said “Goodbye to the old goldies,

and in with Nasser’s new nashers!” Finally, I feel really honoured when patients refer their friends and family members to us. is week, one of my really nice patients brought in a good friend of hers with her to the practice. is other lady was really anxious of going to the dentist and was suffering from a number of dental problems. I am confident that our Team will be able to look after her and provide totally comfortable treatment. It is fascinating how people change when they have a new smile that makes them look and feel more confident. By seeing someone succeed in life, get a new partner, or simply being able to eat really well are the rewards for me as a professional. If you would like any advice or guidance on dental matters, please feel free to visit us. Over a relaxed conversation and a cup of coffee, we will carefully listen to your concerns and guide you on the best solutions for your long-term health and function n

Derma roller is the ultimate in glowing skin, helps acne scars, uneven skin tone, open pores Dermal filler helps to replace lost volume, facial sagging and lifts out lines and wrinkles Muscle relaxing injections helps to soften expression lines for a fresher more awake look BEFORE

Frances had suggested that I receive a course of three Derma Roller treatments. In the press the treatment claims to 'significantly improve' the appearance of lines and wrinkles on your face and décolleté, and is the number one in Hollywood stars choice of red carpet treatments for glowing skin. I can definitely vouch for the effects on the face. The procedure took about 30 minutes and I was a little red faced afterwards, as the actual Derma Roller is made up with hundreds of minuscule 'micro-medical' needles that penetrate the skin. In all I had all three treatments over a period of 6-8 weeks apart each one and I can say that people did notice a difference in my skin’s appearance after the first one. I would definitely recommend this and my skin has never felt so good. Afterwards I decided to have some dermal fillers to help reshape areas where my skin was starting too sag, I feel I look fresher and more youthful. I have had several consultations with Practitioners offering Dermal Fillers and Botox however I did not feel confident enough to go ahead with the procedure. Having met Frances, I found her extremely relaxing, fully understanding with my requirements enabling me to look better instead of artificially enhanced. Frances is very knowledgeable within her field and the result was better than I had envisaged. Completely satisfied and will recommend Frances to my friends. Vicky Wright

SKIN SINS Wow, September has been a busy month, we are now over our summer holidays and settling into the autumn, children are back to school, so now is the perfect time to help our skin rebalance, correct and more importantly get ready for the winter time. I have had a great time testing and trying all the wonderful Instyle beauty buys for 2014, thank you to all the suppliers and good luck. With brands such as Chanel No. 5 perfume and Christian Dior show stopping mascara I have been spoilt, good luck to all brands and I look forward to the results in February 2014. We are all guilty at some stage of the following sins to the skin, here's how to try to resolve them:1. Keeping skin care products for too long, just like food, beauty products have a use by date too. As well as the fragrance and the texture not being right, bacteria can build up and could lead to break outs or infection, also SPF cream should be thrown away to stop you burning if it's old. Most products have a number and the letter m next to them which stands for how many months after opening it is ok to use it, get checking! 2. Squeezing your spots, tempting as it is to squeeze or pick your spots, don't!! It will make the area more inflamed, and more likely to scar. If you are prone to spots or blocked pores, use a daily product containing salicylic, glycolic or mandelic acid to help fight bacteria and heal blemishes quickly, you will also be less likely to scar as the products also help with cell turnover and boosting collagen.

brushes, but not cleaning them at least weekly means bacteria breeding inside our make up bags and potentially causing infection risks to our faces. Try to wash brushes weekly in a natural antiseptic, mix water with witch hazel or tea tree and let them soak for 20 mins to help keep your skin and brushes clean. 5. Look after your lips, perfectly shaped, hydrated, rosy coloured lips are a hallmark of beauty. Define your lips by replacing the lost moisture with a natural filler, the lip tissue is thin and does not retain water in the same way the skin does because they lack sweat and oil glands. Wear a lip balm with SPF to stop discolouration. To help combat dryness gently exfoliate the lips, use a mix of sugar and honey for a gentle and effective treatment. Furthermore there are amazing lip rebuilding creams that help restore and repair lips if you are not keen on natural lip fillers.

3. Neglecting your neck, chest and hands, in the last few weeks I have been helping ladies with repairing all of these areas. We seem to be much better with protecting our faces but seem to be missing other important areas which can be very ageing. When applying face creams, use them to the neck and chest area and also wear SPF on the backs of your hands to stop age spots and wear a good hand repair cream at nighttime. If your are very dehydrated or sun-damaged to any of these areas, skin peeling, derma roller and hydration plumping fillers can make the areas more youthful again. 4. Dirty make up brushes, let's be fair we are all guilty of this, applying our bronzers, eyeshadows and blushers with amazing

LOVING LIFE

LILY BEFORE

WORDS BY DEE BROWN

L

ily loves life - literally. An Auxillary Nurse at the Princess Alexander Hospital, Lily delivers babies on a daily basis. Smiling has become a part of her job description. Lily moved to London from Liverpool in 1961 with her husband and is now a dedicated mother and grandmother. Like many people, Lily had always been nervous about visiting the dentist. “It stems back to my childhood. Back in those days, a toothache always led to the dentist pulling a tooth out. It was never a very nice experience”. Lily had spent a lot of time, effort and money on her teeth but her lower implant supported denture still did not live up to her expectations. at was when she decided to visit Smile Design by Ash, who she had researched on the internet. “I had visited a private dentist before, but visiting Smile Design by Ash was a very different experience. From my first phone call to Cheryl, to visiting the practice – the staff were always very friendly. I felt so confident. e atmosphere is amazing and Bhikhu, Ash’s father was always around to make me feel at ease”. Lily had lower implants placed by another dentist. However, for many years the denture she had placed over the implants did not fit precisely. is meant that the actual implants were practically ineffective. Lily wanted an improvement in her current dentures in terms of appearance, fit and comfort so that she could eat the food she loved and enjoy her life comfortably and confidently. Lily even stopped going out for dinner with friends as she was worried food would become trapped under her dentures and her friends would see them moving. Lily is also a part of the choir Phoenix Acapella, an all ladies ‘barber shop’ style singing group (www.phoenixladies.co.uk). “I love singing, and I was dreading our big performance in December. We are singing at Westminster Cathedral for Barnados charity in front of a huge audience, which is quite daunting – especially if you’re worrying about your teeth slipping!” 44 OCTOBER2013

LILY AFTER

With the help of his skilled denture technician Jim Griggs of QDS Dental Laboratory, Ash helped to create a precision fitting denture that Lily was proud of. “I have received amazing care from Ash, Jim and the team. I mean who else can say that they have met the man who made their teeth? I am forever grateful. Ash always said from the beginning, I don’t care how long it takes, you will end up with teeth you will love – he was right. I love my new teeth and I’d like to thank everyone at Smile Design by Ash for being so kind and friendly”. NEW VIRGINIA WATER PAVILION FORMALLY OPENED BY SIR STUART HAMPSON, CHAIRMAN, THE CROWN ESTATE The Pavilion at Virginia Water was formally opened last month, by The Crown Estate’s Chairman Sir Stuart Hampson. The Pavilion will provide much needed facilities for visitors to Virginia Water Lake, The Valley Gardens and the surrounding area of Windsor Great Park. ased on a concept presented by Architects, Stanton Williams, the building will allow The Crown Estate to provide visitors with an enhanced kiosk-style refreshment offering providing hot and cold food throughout the year; public conveniences including baby changing facilities and it will act as a centre for visitor information and support. An external terrace will provide generous seating and offer enhanced views to Virginia Water Lake.

B

Chairman Sir Stuart Hampson said: “I am delighted to open this wonderful building. The provision of high quality visitor facilities is important to The Crown Estate but the design of the new Pavilion also needed to respect the Grade I listed landscape in which the building sits. The new Pavilion represents a further investment by The Crown Estate in its visitor facilities and is complementary to the awardwinning Savill Building.” Philip Everett, Deputy Ranger, Windsor Great Park, adds: “The design brief called for a building which was practical, attractive and unobtrusive. The architects have produced a ‘quiet’ design which fits within the landscape in an unassuming way, framing the historically important vista and providing a real sense of arrival for the estimated ¾ million visitors who enter the Great Park at Virginia Water annually.” The external cladding of the building has made extensive use of timber to provide a further means to reduce its impact and enable it to sit comfortably within a woodland glade. The timber has been grown and harvested on the Windsor Estate where all forestry operations are FSC certified. 195 cubic metres of Douglas Fir have been used for the structure of the building, with 125 cubic metres of oak used for the cladding. The Pavilion has been designed to be as sustainable a building as possible. With energy efficient LED lighting throughout, additional features include PV solar panel cells on the roof to generate energy, a rainwater harvesting system to reduce reliance on mains water for flushing toilets and air source heat pumps to provide background heating for the building.

The building is based on initial concepts by architects Stanton Williams and was designed and built by Hertfordshire-based Ashe Construction and their design team of Archial (architects), Solutions (structural engineers) and Stuart-McCurry Partners (electrical engineers). The project was managed by Crown Estate staff assisted by Russ Canning and Company, HDC, Max Fordham and Webb Yates. The build was completed with a perfect health and safety record, with not one accident or incident reported. The new Pavilion cost £1.37 million to build. The Pavilion is open daily to visitors to Virginia Water when the car park is open 7.30am – 7.00pm in Summer, and dusk in Winter. First damned and flooded in 1753, Virginia Water Lake was, until the creation of the great reservoirs, the largest man made body of water in the British Isles. The historic landscape includes an ornamental cascade from the 18th century, a ‘Roman Temple’ built from ruins from the ancient city of Leptis Magna in the early 19th century, and a towering 100 ft high Totem Pole. The Crown Estate manages a highly diverse portfolio with a capital value of £8.6 billion, and a total property value of £8.1 billion. We pay our surplus revenue (profit) to the Treasury for the benefit of the nation every year: in 2012/13 this was £252.6million. Over the past ten years The Crown Estate has paid over £2.1 billion to the Treasury. Our objectives, which are laid down by Parliament under the Crown Estate Act 1961, include enhancing the value of the estate and the revenue it produces. The responsibilities of The Crown Estate are to maintain and enhance the value of the estate and its income over the long term and to do this having regard to good management. In summary, The Crown Estate is a successful business organisation guided by our core values – commercialism, integrity and stewardship. The Crown Estate’s portfolio includes office, retail and industrial premises; housing; farmland; forestry and minerals; parkland; and around half the foreshore and almost all the seabed around the UK. Our ranges bring you a choice of styles to suit all homes, each with exceptional quality that will last a lifetime. WE ARE THE WHEELIE BIN CLEANING COMPANY WE LOVE THE JOBS YOU HATE

R

yan Salter and Curtis Payne have been friends since they first met playing football at West Hatch Secondary School in Chigwell. ey are local boys, born and raised in East London. Upon leaving school they found themselves struggling to find a job other than manual labour that did not need any previous experience. e jobs were the same: they had no challenge and offered no future. When Ryan’s Mum, Julie, took her black bag out to the wheelie bin one morning, she came in and said “I always feel like I need a shower when I touch the wheelie bin – it’s disgusting and smells absolutely vile”. As if a light bulb went on in his head, Ryan asked if she would pay to have her bin cleaned; and the idea developed from there. With help and support from their families, they have managed to start their own wheelie bin cleaning company. It’s a huge financial commitment – the van and trailer cost over £20,000 – but Ryan and Curtis are determined to make the business an outstanding success and are looking to expand the company further. e trailer carries its own supply of water and detergent, it lifts the bin collecting any nastiness at the bottom; then allows for the bin itself to be thoroughly cleaned ridding it of any germs, disease and vermin ready for the next weeks bin bags. e water used is recycled, and the machine collects all of the rubbish to ensure that no contamination is lift on your property. e trailer can be used to clean virtually anything.

We also have separate specialist Jet washers to clean: Decking n Drives n Patios n Conservatory roofs n PVC plastic windows frames n Glass Windows n Gutter Cleaning n Shutters on Shops and Warehouses n

IF IT NEEDS CLEANING, THEY CAN DO IT. e last 18 months have been a period of rapid expansion; leading to frequent calls illustrating their success. From residential cleans – “I can’t believe how clean my driveway is, and the whole thing didn’t take that long” to business cleans – “ey are quick, efficient and reliable; we couldn’t ask for a better service”. ey aim to have their second cleaning van on the road by April of next year; with the aim to be the biggest wheelie bin cleaning company in East London and Essex with 5 vans on the road by 2015. With a positive work ethic, and proven results, that should prove to be easily achievable. 020 8500 1122 Ryan: 07503 158 792 Curtis: 07503 158 793 www.thewheeliecleaningcompany.co.uk n 54

Boutique home wine tastings Experience handcrafted wines in the comfort of your own home with Virgin Wines Fabulous! Europe’s biggest online wine retailer, Virgin Wines, is jumping from the web and into your home with the launch of their new boutique home wine tastings. ver the last 12 years the company has focused on working with small independent winemakers to deliver high quality, handcrafted wines to their customers. Now, with the launch of Virgin Wines Fabulous, you can enjoy tasting a selection of these wines from the comfort of your own home with up to 15 of your friends.

O

The Virgin Wines philosophy is ‘Life’s too short for boring wine,’ so you can expect the Fabulous evenings to be fun, informal and informative with a variety of hints, tips and recommendations for you and your friends. Your very own Fabulous Advisor will bring eight delicious wines for you and your guests to try so there will be no shortage of wines to fall in love with! As the host, you get to choose before the event whether to taste one of the selections put together by Virgin Wines Buyer, Dave Roberts, or to opt for a personalised selection designed with the help of your Fabulous Advisor. The Advisor will chat to you and your guests about the wines as you try them, which offers a chance for those who count themselves as a wine novice to learn a little more, and those that see themselves as a ‘wine buff’ to have an evening indulging in a passion! Jessica Parker, General Manager of Virgin Wines Fabulous tells us “As an online company we wanted to find a way to bring Virgin Wines into people’s living rooms. Engaging with customers at home tastings and spreading our passion for wine first hand through our team of Fabulous Advisors seemed a perfect solution. It means anyone can enjoy a personal wine tasting in the comfort of their own home, have the opportunity to try a selection of wines before they buy, whilst

having a fun sociable evening with their friends. What better way to spend an evening and with Christmas just around the corner, it’s the perfect way to stock up!” Fancy being a Fabulous Advisor? Why not start your own Business? Hosting a home tasting is not the only way to get involved with Virgin Wines Fabulous. The company is also looking for dynamic, motivated people to become Fabulous Advisors and introduce Fabulous tastings to new areas. With shows such as ‘The Apprentice’ and ‘Dragons’ Den’ consistently topping the TV ratings, becoming your own boss and building your own business is more in vogue than ever before. As Jessica explains, “Many people want the excitement and financial freedom of starting their own business, particularly if it’s a product they love. But in reality, it isn’t an easy task. By becoming a Fabulous Advisor, budding entrepreneurs have complete control over their work lives whilst enjoying the support of a well-established company and a global, iconic brand such as Virgin. Some Fabulous Advisors just do a tasting a week, others want to turn this into a full-time career, so it is completely flexible allowing you to work when it suits you and around your lifestyle.”

NEW AUDI A3 CABRIOLET BREAKS COVER AT ESSEX AUDI e all-new Audi A3 Cabriolet will shortly be available for order at Essex Audi Centres throughout the region. is sleek new compact soft top will become the fourth model in the Audi A3 range alongside the Sportback, Saloon and original hatchback variants. e latest open top Audi features an automatic acoustic soft top that opens and closes hydraulically in just 18 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph, and when retracted, is fully concealed from view. In order to achieve this the new model is now slightly longer and wider than its predecessor at 4.42m and 1.79 metres respectively. However, with a 15mm reduction in height the A3 Cabriolet’s lower profile and taut “tornado” line design make it a truly visually striking and attractive car. Inside the cabin offers ample space for four adults and the backs of the two rear seats can be folded down to create a wide through-load area – indeed the luggage capacity has been significantly increased overall to an impressive 10.14 cubic feet. Elegant lines, clean surfaces and uncompromising quality are in evidence throughout and features such as the electrically retractable 5.8 inch colour monitor, “jet design” air vents, and 3-D trim strips give both passengers and driver an unshakeable impression of premium class sophistication. ree engine variants will be offered at launch, comprising the 1.4 TFSI 140PS with cylinder on demand, a more powerful 1.8TFSI 180PS and a 2.0 litre150PS diesel option. is means that the A3 Cabriolet range will be able to offer fuel economy from an impressive 48.7 mpg to an a outstanding 67.3 mpg in the combined EU fuel cycle and CO2 emissions as low as 110g/km, making every model an astonishingly fuel and tax efficient option. Essex Audi Centres will be taking orders for the new Audi A3 Cabriolet from late October and the first models are due to arrive in early 2014. For more information or to arrange a test drive in the Audi model of your choice, please contact your nearest Essex Audi Centre, details of which can be found at www.Essex-Audi.co.uk n 58
