Skate at Somerset House with Moët & Chandon, welcomes visitors this winter for an unparalleled skating experience

A beloved staple of London’s winter season, Skate transforms Somerset House’s spectacular neo-classical courtyard into a magical festive destination, complete with a picture perfect 40ft Christmas Tree featuring dazzling decorations, around which skaters and spectators can toast the glad tidings of the season. For 2022, the courtyard will feature a bigger skate space, welcoming visitors to celebrate time together on the ice.

Festive experiences for all ages will be available to enjoy on and off the ice, from rink-side deck takeovers from contemporary DJs, artists, and collectives at Skate Lates with UNIQLO, to the ever-popular day-time skating lessons with Skate School.

There will be special Kids Club sessions for children aged 6-10, allowing children to take their first glide on the ice in a safe, fun environment supported by skate stabilisers and experienced ice marshals. Stabilisers will also be available to children throughout all Skate sessions on a first come, first served basis.

The season will see the return of Chilled Out Skate sessions on selected weekday mornings, at a reduced capacity - designed for skaters who prefer skating in a quieter and more relaxed environment. The rink is open to wheelchair users, with two dedicated skate sessions on 27 & 30 November. Wheelchair accessible facilities are available throughout.

Those looking to unwind off the ice can do so in the style, comfort and warmth of the Skate

Lounge by Moët & Chandon. Here visitors can enjoy a classic Champagne cocktail or a Piggyback Hot Toddy with the perfect rink side view. In the courtyard, Hotel Chocolat’s Chocmobile will be serving up warming winter delights on-thego, from decadent hot chocolates to chocolate goodies. Visitors can also browse an exclusive popup store from Hotel Chocolat in the West Wing, perfect for those in search of an indulgent gift, or a treat for themselves.

For mouth-watering winter food and seasonal festive tipples look no further than Chalet Suisse by Jimmy Garcia - a cosy, magic Alpine dining experience from pop-up legend Jimmy Garcia, bringing the very best in festive indulgence from the Swiss mountains, for you to enjoy with friends, family or colleagues.

Booking in advance is highly recommended as sessions sell out quickly – a small number of walkup tickets will be available on the day. Visit somersethouse.org.uk for more information and to book tickets.

Building Character

“How are you feeling?” A 4-word question yet perhaps one of the hardest to answer.

If you were asked this question today, what would your answer be? If you were to ask your child this question, what would their answer be? At Avon House, this is a question that our pupils are asked on a daily basis and one that we are committed to helping our children have the emotional literacy and confidence to answer. For once we know how our pupils are feeling, we can tailor our teaching approach to create an environment that encourages working and learning for all.

We believe that a child’s character is a combination

of all the values and qualities that they possess and that by providing pupils with a range of opportunities and experiences, both within and outside of the classroom, we will then provide a platform for all of our pupils to flourish.

Whilst we are a small school, our grounds have been cleverly developed to make the most of the space with our buildings, both old and new, telling a story of over a 100 years’ of education. Conveniently located on Woodford High Road, we have recently partnered with The Woodford Wells Club, a partnership

that provides us with unique access via the school’s playground to the WWC’s extensive sporting facilities. Every pupil also receives a Junior Membership to the Woodford Wells Club included within their school fees.

At Avon House we are a family, we know our children and our parents well. We expect our Year 6 pupils to be good role models to those who are younger in the school and encourage our parents to play an active role within school life.

At grassroots in the classrooms, our children explore, create and develop into well-rounded individuals. We give our children the tools they need to develop from their first entry point whether that is in our Nursery class (3 years+ entry), Reception class (4 years+ entry) or later on in our Prep department (7 years+ entry) and ensure that each and every child is prepared for senior school.

Our staff possess a wealth of educational experience which blends well together in class teaching as well as allowing for specialisms to be used across the whole age range for all pupils to benefit. Spanish is taught from 3 years+ with Spanish and French taught in our Prep department. Music is also a key element for us with

We are a competitive school in all aspects of school life, whether competing in National Quiz Club competitions, National Maths Challenges, Independent School Art competitions both locally and across the country, sports of every discipline that appear in the primary curriculum, singing in London venues or in our own Inter House competitions. We have been National netball finalists, ISA London North champions at mixed tag rugby, finalists at science, maths and general knowledge quiz club competitions and have individuals who are competing nationally in karate and in swimming events.

We are the second Independent School in the country to receive Gold status as a UNICEF Rights Respecting School. Mirroring our school ethos, our pupils are encouraged to use the “Rights of the Child” to express not only how we should all act around others but also how we can support children in the broader community.

We appreciate that choosing a school is a hard decision with a range of mixed emotions. I always think there are similarities between buying a house and choosing a school. When you buy a house, you know from the moment you walk in that feeling of home and I think the same is true when selecting a school setting for your child. It has to feel like home.

skincare mistakesAvoiding autumn

darker days don’t mean you can ditch the

As the weather gets cooler and we come into autumn, many of us will be making changes to our wardrobes –putting away our summer clothes and getting out our snuggliest jumpers.

These kinds of shifts are second nature, but so many of us forget to switch up our skincare routines to suit the new season.

Consultant dermatologist at skindoc (skindoc. uk) Dr Sreedhar Krishna says: “Put simply, the main role of our skin is to keep the good stuff inside and the bad stuff outside – think of solid windows on a wintry night. However, our skin needs some help to get this done.”

He sees many of the same mistakes being made during this time of year. “At best, they are innocently harmless, but at worst could actually open your skin up to irritation and damage,”

If you want to keep your skin healthy throughout autumn and winter, try to avoid these mistakes…

Not wearing sunscreen every day

It’s easy to remember to slather on sunscreen during summer when you want to protect your skin from sun damage. While it might not be as obvious when the days are darker and the sun looks weaker, it’s just as crucial to finish off your morning routine with SPF.

“There is less ambient sunlight in these months than at the peak of summer, but winter months can have intense UVB radiation,” explains Krishna.

“Sun protection is important every day, not just on sunny days.”

Using the same lightweight moisturiser as you did in summer

Unfortunately, the light, barely-there moisturiser you loved during summer won’t quite cut it.

Krishna says: “Colder air and bitter winds can join forces to strip your skin of moisture and essential oils. You can protect yourself by switching to more nourishing, richer moisturisers.”

Sticking to a light cleanser

When the weather’s warm, a light foaming cleanser will often do the trick. However, Krishna suggests this could make your skin “more vulnerable to the elements” in autumn, so recommends “swapping that foam cleanser for a hydrating cleanser” for a bit more protection.

By a hydrating cleanser, Krishna means one that “locks moisture into the skin, rather than solely focusing on cleansing the skin surface of ‘crud’ acquired during the day”. He recommends looking for face washes including ceramides (they act “as a barrier to lock in moisture”) and hyaluronic acid (“a naturally occurring substance which attracts moisture into skin cells, leading to skin feeling plump and hydrated”).

Taking scalding hot showers

When the weather’s cold and miserable, nothing is better than sinking into a steaming bath or having a long, hot shower. However, Krishna says: “Repeated exposure to hot water will strip your skin of valuable moisture” – and this applies to skin all over your body, not just your face.

If you do want to have a hot shower, Krishna adds, “I’d recommend ensuring you moisturise liberally as soon as you dry off” to avoid the dreaded winter dry skin.

Dr Toni Phillips, clinical director at DestinationSkin (destinationskin.com), says: “Showers should be as lukewarm or cold as you can handle. You will see an improvement in the glow of all your skin if the water temperature is low or cool.”

Forgetting to exfoliate

Remembering to exfoliate during summer is easy, particularly as you want to slough off all the sunscreen and sweat your skin has accumulated over the day.

It’s not quite as intuitive in winter, when all you really want to do is slather on thick moisturisers to keep yourself hydrated. However, Phillips says: “If the natural cycle of skin exfoliation is not optimal, layers of dead skin cells remain on the surface and can build up.” This can “congest the skin”, potentially leading to breakouts. “The skin can also look dull, with an uneven texture and in more mature people, the lines and wrinkles will appear deeper,” she adds.

For Krishna, exfoliation becomes “even more” important in winter, because we’re likely to have a drier complexion – and you want moisturiser to absorb into your face, “rather than sitting on dry flakes of skin”. First, he recommends washing your face with a hydrating cleanser. “Then gently pat the skin dry,” he says, “massage the exfoliating scrub into the skin in purposeful small circles with your fingers and rinse away. Don’t forget to moisturise straight after.”

COSY LOUNGEWEAR for colder months

warm. On your bottom half, thermal leggings worn under loose trousers offer added insulation.

JOGGERS

Swap your regular joggers for a fleece-lined pair and you’ll really notice the difference. A synthetic alternative to wool, the fluffy fabric creates air pockets, trapping body heat and keeping cold air out.

FLEECE

If you’re really feeling the chill, pull on a fluffy or fleece-lined top for maximum warmth. Zip-up fleeces are ideal for teaming with rollneck tops, while a hoodie is handy if you don’t want to wear a beanie hat.

SOCKS

There’s nothing worse than having cold feet at home, so keep your tootsies toasty in a pair

Wrap up in style with these ultrainsulating basics, says Katie Wright.

With energy prices on the rise, it’s understandable if you’re delaying turning on your heating, or minimising the number of hours you have the radiators blasting.

Stocking up on winter warmers will help you keep warm as temperatures continue to drop –especially if you’re working from home.

By layering up with specially designed loungewear from head to toe, you’ll stay toasty for longer.

Here’s our pick of the best buys for men and women…

THERMALS

Start with a thermal fabric base layer that traps body heat. A strappy vest or scoop neck top will be invisible under a jumper or sweatshirt, while a rollneck top keeps your neck extra

of thermal, wool or cashmere socks, paired with some thick bootie slippers for the ultimate insulation.

COAT TRENDS THAT WILL BE HUGE THIS SEASON

Wrap up in style for the colder months, says Katie Wright.

Are you excited for coat season?

After a summer that seemed to last forever (not that we’re complaining) and a mild start to autumn, there hasn’t been much call for proper puffers, parkas and trenches yet.

We haven’t been able to enjoy that cosy feeling of bundling up for a brisk day, but that’s set to change as the clocks go back and chillier weather arrives.

It’s great news for fashion lovers, because this season’s high street collections are full of cool, catwalkinspired coats ready to refresh your look.

Here are five fab trends to style with your autumn/winter wardrobe…

PINK

The undisputed colour of AW22, pink was all over the runways, and the trend got a mega boost with the emergence of ‘Barbiecore’ fashion inspired by Margot Robbie and the forthcoming Barbie movie. A punchy pink coat is the perfect statement piece for the colder months. Keep the silhouette sleek and go for slightly softer shade for maximum dayto-night potential, or opt for a vibrant fuchsia to team with party dresses and tailored looks.

MAXI LENGTH

Along with flowing skirts and gowns, maxi coats swept down the runways at Jil Sander, Altuzarra, Acne and more. The beauty of a loose, longline coat is you can throw it over just about anything. For an on-trend autumn look, pair with wide-leg jeans and chunky Chelsea boots.

ANIMAL PRINT

From chunky faux fur jackets to chic leopard print coats, animal motifs are everywhere this season –

not that they ever really go out of style. A leopard coat is an excellent investment piece. Easy to style with denim, leather trousers and midi skirts as well as party outfits, you’ll wear yours for years to come.

PUFFER

As seen on the Dion Lee, Dries Van Noten and Michael Kors catwalks, big coats are big news this season. Turn up the volume (and the heat) on your winter wardrobe with a longline padded jacket in a neutral hue – the perfect blend of fashion and function.

SHEARLING

More versatile than a faux fur number, a fuzzy shearling or borg coat in cream, camel or navy is a great all-rounder when temperatures drop. Whether you’re living in joggers, hoodies and trainers right now or prefer a swishy Seventies look, a teddy coat will top off your autumn/winter look perfectly.

GRANDPA PATTERNS

If making a shimmery or ultra-bright statement in

‘T

is the season… to start wearing your warmest, fluffiest, woolliest knitwear.

There’s nothing more reliable than the leaves turning, colder weather descending, and digging out our favourite cardigans, jumpers and turtlenecks.

Knitwear might have a starring moment every year, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring or predictable – instead, there are a whole host of new trends to get into this season…

HIGHLIGHTER COLOURS

Who said winter has to mean muted tones and drab outfits? This season, it’s all about injecting a bit of life into your wardrobe via highlighter bright knitwear.

The colour you choose is entirely up to you, whether it’s taking inspiration from Valentino and opting for hot pink, or going for neon yellows or traffic-stopping oranges. The brighter, the better.

DISCO KNITS

And the party doesn’t stop there, as glittery knits are also having a moment. Think of it as the perfect warm-up to party season, with silvery cardigans and golden roll-necks taking over Instagram.

You can tailor this look to your personal style and how much of a statement you’re willing to make. Bright glittery colours will help you stand out, while softly sparkling blacks and nudes make

your knitwear isn’t quite what you’re looking for this season, the trend for grandpa patterns will have you covered. Seen on the catwalks of Molly Goddard, Ganni and more, this is about more low-key colours and comforting geometric patterns.

The key to nailing this look? Go for oversized styles for maximum comfort, and you know you’ve nailed it when the pattern looks like something you – or knitwear king Tom Daley – might have made yourself.

CUT OUTS

Nineties-inspired minimalism isn’t going anywhere soon, and now it’s making its mark in knitwear too. This trend is all about light knits with subtle cutouts, for a sexy take on your regular woollies.

Of course, cut-outs aren’t exactly ideal when the cold weather really closes in, so to actually make this look work for winter, it’s all about layers. Pop a chunky cardigan over your Nineties-inspired knit, and with a coat on top you’ll be warm and bang on trend.

CORSET BELTS

This trend isn’t technically knitwear, but it’s all about how woollies are being styled this season. As cosy and delightful as your favourite jumper might be, sometimes it’s easy to feel a bit swamped by swathes of wool – and a waist belt could be the perfect solution to this.

Whether it’s a long cardie or knitted dress, a corset belt will give your silhouette a bit of a shape, and transform your normal knitwear into a whole new look with one simple accessory.

I WANT MY EARS PINNED BACK...

Pinnaplasty or otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure to correct or alter the shape of absent ear folds, large lobule or both. Any cosmetic procedure is a crucial decision in your life - it is essential to know what you need to consider before contemplating getting pinnaplasty.

Why do adults seek pinnaplasty procedure?

In my practice, adults will request ear surgery if they have been thinking of ear pinning surgery for a long time, and it had been affecting their self-confidence. Women usually tend to seek pinnaplasty as it sometimes restricts their hairstyle.

Is pinnaplasty a safe procedure?

Pinnaplasty as such is a safe procedure with very low complication and revision surgery rate. The procedure

itself takes 1 to 2 hours as a day case; this means you can go home the same day. The procedure is done by cut behind the ear and surgeon puts corrective sutures which places the ear in the new position. You have a head bandage for a week to keep your ear folded in the new location, protect from trauma while the ear is healing and prevent infection.

How do people feel after pinnaplasty procedure?

I offer pinnaplasty as well as rhinoplasty to patients in my practice. Most of these patients are in the age group of 18-30 and appearance is crucial to them. I feel immense pleasure and pride to watch patients journey from who may be shy and unhappy because of the shape of their ears to a person who is more confident about their appearance.

CHAPLINS Winter trend report

As we move into Winter, the mood this year is all about comfort. What we’re currently seeking from our homes is to feel calm, relaxed and cosy. They are our personal sanctuaries, designed for no one but those that live within them, and they’ve become spaces where we want to express our unique tastes, personalities and histories. The contemporary home says ‘come on in,’ ‘snuggle into this,’ ‘remember this?’ or ‘have a look at that.’

Combined with our ongoing love-affair with all things natural, the décor emerging for A/W 2022 is soothing, serene and simple, either touched by the organic or with the highly personal embedded into it. These interiors inspire peaceful nights in, thoughtful conversations, happy memories and the occasional wry smile. Here’s the Chapins’ edit of the best.

A NATURAL EMBRACE / GREEN UPHOLSTERY

As well as the colours and physical reminder of nature we are bringing into our homes this season, it’s also a representation of how all things natural make us feel. The welcoming embrace of the great outdoors is represented interiors-wise by sumptuous upholstery, tempting textures and cosy sink-into-me cushions, which combined with verdant shades instantly switches the mind into unwinding mode. Sofas and chairs emulate nature in the simplest, clearest of ways, with grounded, unexaggerated tones touched by the forest spanning moss, sage, fern and firs. Their designs also nod to the bucolic, prompting memories of being outside while welcoming you into their cosy, calming arms to ponder the joys of it all.

The refreshed take on Arflex’s classic 1970-designed Marenco sofa by Mario Marenco has not only natural colouring, but its plump cushions channel the comforting envelopment that being immersed in greenery can bring.

GamFratesi’s Beetle Chair in 3D Veneer, a new wood-wrapped take on the iconic shell-shaped design, sees its rich velvet upholstery take on the characteristics of moss growing across timber. The organic-esque fabric on Giorgetti’s Montgomery chair by Dainelli Studio lures in the eye like a patterned plant, the grassy shade spreading from the seat onto the upper ash wood arms to extend the verdant feel, and simultaneously hard yet soft,

LINE OF SIGHT / LINEAR PENDANT LIGHTS

As the nights draw in and the curtains close, it’s time to think about lighting. The designs shepherding us through these darker days are based around simplicity. Not exaggerated. Not attention grabbing. Leading A/W 2022 are linear pendants made from elegant, slimline forms that range from the calligraphic, twisting and turning mid-air, to the steadfastly straightened. Such considered minimalism creates a soothing, easygoing space, one where the eye is pulled upward only momentarily and illumination appears as if from thin air.

Decidedly minimalist, the Oneline by artist Kasper Friis Kjeldgaard for Fritz Hansen is a sleek slash of brightness which rotates 360 degrees to cast light in any direction. Moooi’s Gravity Chandelier by Paul Cocksedge is composed of elegant flexible arms which fall naturally in flowing curves, the shapes defined by where its glass shades are positioned. A pair of ultra-delicate rings, Lodes’s Elara pendant by Nika Zupanc is an understated representation of astral motion, its loops silently interacting with and orbiting each other. A suspended arc, Cattelan Italia’s Nahun

Moroso’s Pebble Rubble sofa by Front is designed to emulate rain-polished rocks covered in a layer of overgrown plant life to represent nature’s slow, reassuring rhythm.

lamp by Studio Kronos feels almost typographical, as if drawn in the air with the sweep of a brush, the outer LED strip casting a diffused glow.

ON DISPLAY / GLASS DISPLAY CABINETS

2022 is the time to break those much-loved mementoes and treasured trinkets out of hiding. As part of crafting a home imbued with meaning and personality, we’re ready to put ourselves on display with the bevy of newly launched glassfronted storage pieces and curate our very own cabinets of curiosities. Transparent doors keep items safe and protected yet give them undeniable presence in the room, framing them and presenting collections to passers-by, declaring who you are and telling your story.

The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Audrey cabinet by Pocci&Dondoli for Bontempi is composed almost entirely of extra-transparent glass, diverting all attention onto the objects placed within it. Gallotti&Radice’s Soda cabinet by Draga & Aurel adds to the display’s personality with its playful rounded shape and gold-toned glass, items on shelves interacting with its circular frame. ‘Like a small stage, rich in attention and details, Shibusa tells the story of personal passions’ confirms designer Mauro Lipparini, his cabinet an elegant combination of glass and ash.

A BIGGER SPLASH / TEXTURED GLASS

When there is no need for glass to be transparent, designers are taking the opportunity to make it decorative and experimental. Transporting us straight to the shores of the sea, the foot of a waterfall or the reflections in a pond, this there’s a new vogue for textured glass ¬– steeped once again in our desire to be close to nature. Embracing the hypnotic yet soothing traits of water, pieces of glass are rippled and warped like sheets of water blown by the wind, expressions of deft craft skills as well as our collective need to bring the outside in.

The surface of Cassina’s Esosoft table by Antonio Citterio feels like an angular slice of gentle river, its thick textured glass taking on the appearance of water softly brushed by a breeze. Bontempi’s aptly named H20 Coffee Table by Studio F+B Design forms a lonely puddle disturbed by undulating concentric rings, as if a stone has just been dropped into it, and Bonaldo’s blown glass Acquerelli Table Lamp by Marco Zito imitates a range of watery expressions, from icy frozen milk white to ripples full of intriguing movement.

UNEXPECTED ANGLES

Get your protractors out –angles are back. After years of yearning for circles, roundness and eschewing corners, sharpness and straight lines in the home, we’ve started to revolt. These aren’t your usual right-angled tables, it’s a whole lot more creative than that, with designers experimenting with balance, illusion and juxtaposition in materials soft and hard. Oh, and you can forget about the rules of gravity, too.

Cassina merges precision and comfort with its Flutz chair by Michael Anastassiades, its sharp parallel aluminium sides sheltering a soft seat within. Unsurprisingly, Bonaldo’s Pisa coffee tables by Mauro Lipparini lean diagonally to the side, balancing themselves with an off-kilter surface or standing thin and tower-like. Square by Jonathan Olivares for Moroso blurs the boundaries between soft and hard, forming cushioned right angles and perfect lines in precise upholstery, while with its new Abat-Jour shade throwing more geometry into the mix, Vitra’s Potence wall lamp by Jean Prouvé shoots sharply upward, mixing the aesthetic of a wall and pendant light.

DESIGNED FOR

Creating a stylish multi-function kitchen to suit your home.

These days, we’re increasingly requiring our rooms to be multi-functional spaces – and this is especially true when it comes to the kitchen. No longer just a place to cook, many of us now want our kitchens to effortlessly transform into a space to relax or entertain guests, or perhaps even become an office.

Creating a room that fulfils many roles needn’t mean sacrificing on style, however. In fact, when we spoke to local kitchen design firm Urban Myth, they were excited about the new design trends and products which allow your kitchen to seamlessly transition with the rest of your home.

Lead Designer at Urban Myth, Davide Dellanzo, told us, “kitchen trends for 2023 are designed to deliver soothing and comfortable spaces using natural materials and colours inspired by the outdoors, with soft design details to create efficient living.

“The design of the kitchen is being reinterpreted, in the sense that it feels like an additional living space rather than a utilitarian place to prepare food. And when we design kitchens for our customers, we bring in elements for the entire home, to make it functional and beautiful.”

To help inspire your next kitchen renovation, here are Urban Myth’s key trends for 2023.

Cohesive Elements

Keeping a cohesive design scheme will allow the style elements of each room to flow seamlessly

throughout your home. For example, the colour you choose for your kitchen cabinets could be used as a wall covering in your dining area.

Textured Surfaces

Tactile worktops, shiny metallic accents and wood finishes can all be used to add depth and interest to your kitchen. Using contrasting textures, such as a polished worksurface with natural wood door fronts, helps to add a sense of layering – a clever tactic that will make your kitchen feel cosy and welcoming.

Free-standing Storage

A simple and effective way to create a seamless transition between your kitchen and living space is to add a sideboard or media unit using the same or complimentary materials. This gives you additional storage, while also linking your interior design scheme.

Concealed Functionality

Our pocket door system is the perfect way to hide away the functionality of your kitchen whilst still ensuring it is accessible when required. Your living space becomes uninterrupted by appliances and can be closed off to show the entire beauty of your cabinetry.

A place to conveniently charge your devices is a must-have for many of our customers and now there are many solutions which don’t impact on

the design of your space. Pop-up power sockets and wireless charging points within your worktop give the kitchen multi-functionality without compromising on style.

If you’re renovating your kitchen this year, visit www.urbanmyth.net for more design inspiration or book an Urban Myth showroom appointment by calling 0208 531 3413.

Are you concerned about potential leaks or costly water damage?

Are you one of 70% of home owners in the UK incorporating a mineral felt flat roof? Mineral felt generally has a slow breakdown often allowing water ingress to cause unnecessary damage before anything can be visibly detected within the home.

A failing roof & the warning signs- look for signs of cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights etc. Beware of blisters on the roof surface, during colder months they can become brittle and crack. The home-owner should also be made aware that insurance companies will no longer accept any liability for any external or internal damage caused by a leaking flat roof which is over 10 years old.

Further very important information: - all property owners please be aware when a flat roof is replaced there are Building Regulations that the homeowner and the contractor must comply with. How to create a gallery wall

Agallery wall is a wonderful way to add interest and personality to a space.

Never underestimate the power of art to set the tone and energy in any room. Sometimes choosing a single piece of wall art just isn’t possible - making a gallery wall the perfect soution.

Here are Mineheart’s top 5 tips to create a high impact, cohesive gallery display for your interior.

1. Choose your biggest artwork first

Find a large piece of art that you love, and use that to set the tone and atmosphere for your art display. Mineheart’s collection of designer wall art come in a range of sizes, making it easy to select the right size for your space.

2. Find a common theme or colour

Many people find that their gallery wall works best with a little order and consistency. You might choose a series of water images, for example, or perhaps animals or scenes.

You may also want to theme the wall around a certain colour or set of colours that match your decor.

3. Mix up your frames

The most effective gallery walls mix up the frame types and sizes of artworks so that the display is a little haphazard. Many of our wall art designs come with a series of frame options to suit your space.

4. Choose portrait and landscape

Choosing all portrait-orientation art can look a little too contrived, so make sure you have a mix of orientations to suit the space and keep things a little unpredictable.

“Place your largest piece to the left or right of centre, and fit the other artworks around it”

5. Plan the space

Once you have collected all the pieces you want to display on your gallery wall, experiment with the layout. Measure your chosen wall space and plot out the dimensions on the floor using masking tape.

Place your largest piece to the left or right of centre, and fit the other artworks around it, giving each one adequate space. Far easier than trying to do it on the wall!

The idea behind Mineheart is to create a playground for creativity and adventure, where fantasy meets design, and dreams meet industry. We try to inject a sense of wonder into everyday objects and the spaces around us, telling stories and creating objects that are far from ordinary, they must be extraordinary in order to meaningfully exist. Within the Mineheart wonderland, everyday objects that include wallpaper, wall art, lighting furniture and home accessories, are more than just functional, they contain stories, love, art and poetry. mineheart.com

Huckleberry creates a unique kitchen for House of Hackney

Tucked away at the entrance to the mystical Cornish Castle of Trematon sits a small lodge house – ‘Quercus Lodge’ – an unassuming octagonal building painted in a dusky cream. Nothing on the outside suggests what you will find within: a riot of pattern and colour, layered fabrics and wallpapers that draw you into a fantasy world of flowers and foliage. Here, the kitchen feels pared back by comparison to the other rooms, with its Huckleberry freestanding kitchen furniture uniquely customised for House of Hackney.

Beginning the latest project in the renovation of their home the Castle of Trematon, owners of House of Hackney Frieda Gormley and and Javvy M Royle approached Huckleberry to design and make a kitchen for the castle’s lodge house. Huckleberry’s Matt and Claire Podesta met Frieda and Javvy and quickly bonded over their shared ethos of sustainability and love of British-made design. And so the plan for the Quercus Lodge kitchen was born.

Huckleberry’s freestanding kitchen furniture is designed primarily as stand-alone pieces which emanate balance and proportion, but at the same

time incorporate appliances, sinks and taps. It is made to look as though it could have been in the house for years, if not decades, completely comfortable in its surroundings. The family of furniture includes islands, dressers, base cabinets incorporating sinks, hobs and dishwashers, tall cupboards, plate racks and tables.

Creating kitchen furniture for this project was exciting especially incorporating the new range of House of Hackney paint and tiles. Huckleberry’s Scullery Bench has been given a House of Hackney twist including a decorative frieze, which is also used on the cooker hood, and finished off with hand turned oak acorn finials.

“Inspired by Georgian cabinetry and Arts and Crafts values, Huckleberry were the perfect people to create the kitchen for the Quercus Lodge,” says Frieda Gormley. “With sustainability at the heart of the brand, their distinctive, enduring design, quality British craftsmanship and responsibly sourced wood ensure each piece is made to last a lifetime; and the results are truly beautiful.” huckleberryhome.co.uk Instagram: @huckleberryhome.uk Facebook: @huckleberryhomeuk
