THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES THE EARL AND COUNTESS OF WESSEX VISIT ESSEX & HERTS AIR AMBULANCE Essex and Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) hosted a visit by Their Royal Highnesses The Earl and Countess of Wessex today. EHAAT is a local lifesaving charity and works alongside the hospitals, emergency services and supporting organisations across the region. Today’s visit was an opportunity to bring everyone together at EHAAT’s new airbase at North Weald, enabling The Earl and Countess to say thank you to some of these organisations for their outstanding hard work during the pandemic.

16 MARCH 2022

O

n first arriving at North Weald, The Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire and Vice Lord Lieutenant of Essex greeted The Earl and Countess of Wessex, and introduced them to Jane Gurney, CEO of EHAAT. Their Royal Highnesses then toured the new airbase, where they met members of EHAAT’s critical care team, charity staff and volunteers. The Earl and Countess also heard about EHAAT’s vision for a ‘Centre for Excellence’ at North Weald, which would enable the charity to push the boundaries in innovation, research and education for the advancement of pre-hospital care. Their Royal Highnesses spent time with representatives from the local hospitals in the region and then spoke to air lifted patients and their families to hear first-hand about their experiences. The highlight of the Royal visit took place at the front of the building where people had gathered representing the emergency services and voluntary support organisations, together with the members of the armed forces and many EHAAT charity staff and volunteers. The Earl and Countess took the opportunity to stop and speak to individuals

and thank them for the work they do. Jane Gurney was thrilled that The Earl and Countess of Wessex had visited. She said: “This is a real milestone in our charity’s history, as it is the first time that Essex and Herts Air Ambulance has hosted a Royal visit. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring together all of the organisations who have worked so hard during these challenging times of the pandemic. I am truly honoured that we have been able to showcase our new airbase at North Weald and share our vision for a Centre for Excellence that will continue to develop pre-hospital care into the future.” Chair of Trustees at EHAAT, Jonathan Trower, added: “We are absolutely delighted to have welcomed Their Royal Highnesses The Earl and Countess of Wessex to our new airbase in North Weald, and we are very grateful for their interest and support for our charity. We were able to show them our outstanding new facilities for our team and to discuss our exciting plans for the further development of our emergency medical services across Essex and Hertfordshire.” Photos: Doug Blanks

Discovering the renaissance of Cognac In cocktail bars, Cognac has too often been left to watch the action from the top shelf. Much like malt whisky it can be viewed as ‘too good’ to mix and so sees the inside of a shaker far less often than rum or gin. However, this wasn’t always the case.

C

rack open a copy of cocktail bible The Bon Vivant’s Companion, published in the mid 1800s, and you’ll find the recipes filled calls for Cognac, or simply brandy. These spirits were there at the birth of cocktail culture, bringing their signature elegance and panache to sours, slings, and punches. Today, bartenders prizing provenance and character are exploring what Cognac can do when you take it off the shelf and put it in the speed rail. Discover these explorations for yourself at this year’s Cognac Show. The show, from leading spirits

20 MARCH 2022

retailer The Whisky Exchange, makes a return to London for a celebration of the French grape spirit, featuring over 150 delicious Cognacs to try, sublime cocktails and mouth-watering foodpairings. Whether you’re a Cognac connoisseur looking for your new favourite, or a complete novice wanting to learn more, join us to discover the charm of Cognac at Glaziers Hall on Friday 22 April, 5:30 – 9:30pm and Saturday 23 April, 12 – 6pm. Tickets are from just £50 and include sensory experiences from the likes of Rémy Martin and Frapin, food pairings from Martell and a variety of modern twists on classic cocktails from the team behind leading cocktail destination Bar Luciole in Cognac. To secure your ticket now go to: https://cognacshow.com/london/tickets/

One cocktail on the menu at The Cognac Show is a twist on the Manhattan. The ‘Dandy’ is an elegant drink that highlights notes of tobacco and smoked wood, swapping the Manhattan’s traditional bourbon for Remy Martin VSOP and adding to it vermouth infused with a homemade hemp, smoked wood and tobacco tincture. All combined with a mix of blackcurrant-based bitter called amerisse and maraschino liqueur, this is Cognac at its classiest.

D

ue to overwhelming public demand, The Art of Banksy, is now booking to May 2022. Seen by over one million people worldwide, The Art of Banksy has now made its home in London, where over 90 authenticated Banksy pieces gathered from private collections across the globe are exhibited in a 12,000 sq. ft gallery.

THE DETAILS Please buy your ticket in advance. The box office is a cashless venue and can only accept debit & credit card payments. Location: 50 Earlham St, Covent Garden, WC2H 9LJ Follow @ArtBanksyLondon

30 MARCH 2022

Opening to critical acclaim in May 2021, the exhibition has quickly become a must-see addition to the London art scene. It features original and authenticated works from one of the most intriguing and talked-about artists in modern history, including prints, canvasses, screen prints, unique works and limited-edition pieces mainly dated between the years 1997 to 2008 - the period which resulted in Banksy’s most recognisable and well-known works. It includes iconic favourites such as ‘Girl with a Balloon’ and ‘Rude Copper’ alongside ‘Brace Yourself ’ a rarely seen public outing for the painting, mostly hidden away since its creation over a decade ago. The vast 245 x 182cm work one of the largest ever created by Banksy - takes centre stage in the exhibition. A new addition to the exhibition is the installation of six video screens showing exclusive interviews with Banksy’s former printer. A graffiti artist himself, he gives hilarious first-hand testimony of how the pair first came to work together, how they broke into zoos around the world to graffiti tag animal enclosures, and the time Banksy created a special Flag print to finance a Santa’s Ghetto exhibit in a former shoe shop on Oxford Street. No Banksy fan will want to miss this unique opportunity to hear first-hand amazing insights from one of the close collaborators of the notoriously anonymous artist. Also new are schools workshops and private tours conducted by London Blue Badge Tourist Guides who specialise in graffiti and street, available Monday to Wednesday from 6 pm. In true Banksy style, The Art of Banksy is not authorised or curated in collaboration with the elusive man himself. For more details and to book online visit artofbanksy.co.uk or call 08440 412001

This prestigious annual award is held to pay tribute to the sports car chosen by a panel of influential personalities from the world of motoring for its design and aesthetic beauty. The same jury awarded Ferrari’s Chief Design Officer, Flavio Manzoni, with the Grand Prize of Design, in recognition of his original, creative and influential work in the automotive sector. Flavio Manzoni said: “These two important awards are indisputable proof of the levels of quality and excellence reached by the Ferrari Styling Centre, which I have the privilege of leading, and of the sophisticated formal research carried out on the Ferrari Daytona SP3”. On February 6th 1967, Ferrari pulled off one of the most spectacular feats in its entire history

when it took the top three places at the 24 Hours of Daytona in the first round of that year’s International World Sports Car Championship. The three cars that shot past the chequered flag in that legendary side-by-side finish on Ford’s home turf – in first place a 330 P3/4, in second a 330 P4 and in third a 412 P – represented the pinnacle of development of the Ferrari 330 P3, a model that chief engineer Mauro Forghieri had significantly improved in each of the three racing car fundamentals: engine, chassis and aerodynamics. The 330 P3/4 perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the sports prototypes of the 1960s, a decade now considered the golden era of closed wheel racing and an enduring reference point for generations of engineers and designers. The design of the Ferrari Daytona SP3, a limited-edition car that joins the ‘Icona’ series, is a harmonious interplay of contrasts, sublimely sculptural, voluptuous surfaces alternating with the kind of sharper lines that revealed the burgeoning

importance of aerodynamics in the design of ‘60s and ‘70s racers such as the 330 P4, 350 Can-Am and 512 S. The Ferrari Daytona SP3 sports a naturally aspirated V12, mid-rear-mounted in typical racing car style. Undisputedly the most iconic of all Maranello’s engines, this power unit delivers 840 cv – making it the most powerful engine ever built by Ferrari – along with 697 Nm of torque and maximum revs of 9500 rpm. The chassis is built entirely from composite materials using Formula 1 technologies that have not been seen in a road car since the LaFerrari, Maranello’s last supercar. The seat is an integral part of the chassis to reduce weight and guarantee the driver a driving position similar to that of a competition car. This model is the most aerodynamically efficient car ever built by Ferrari without resorting to active aero devices. It can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 2.85s and from zero to 200km/h in just 7.4s: exhilarating performance, an extreme set-up, and the intoxicating V12 soundtrack deliver completely unparalleled driving pleasure delivering exhilarating driving pleasure but also usable performance. From the wraparound windscreen back, the Ferrari Daytona SP3’s cabin looks like a dome set into a sensual sculpture with sinuous wings emerging boldly either side. Another key element is the butterfly doors, which have an air box integrated into them to channel air to the side-mounted radiators. The front of the Ferrari Daytona SP3 is dominated by two imposing wings that feature outer and inner crests: the latter dive into two air vents on the bonnet, making the wings

look wider. The rear bodywork highlights the powerful appearance of the wing by the repetition of the twin-crest theme and the aerodynamic vent that boosts its three-dimensional volume. The compact, tapered cockpit combines with the wings to create a powerful tail with a central backbone element inspired by the 330 P4. The naturally-aspirated V12, the living beating heart of the new Ferrari Icona, is revealed in all its glory at the end of this backbone. The Ferrari ‘Icona’ series was launched in 2018 with the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2, which were inspired by the competition barchettas of the 1950s that helped earn the marque its legendary status in motorsport with a string of prestigious victories. The ‘Icona’ series celebrates Ferrari history by reinterpreting the timeless styling of the marque’s most iconic cars to radically modern effect using the most innovative materials and technologies available today. The idea of taking inspiration from a particular time in history, which lies at the core of the Icona concept, goes much further than merely reusing styling cues from the past. Rather the aim is to distil the very essence of an era and using it as a springboard to create new concepts that themselves are unique enough to become icons for future generations. ferrari.com

R

olls Royce have announced that their all-electric ‘Spirit of Innovation’ aircraft is officially the world’s fastest all-electric aircraft, having set two new world records which have now been independently confirmed. The aircraft reached a top speed of 555.9 km/h (345.4 mph) over 3 kilometres, smashing the existing record by 213.04 km/h (132mph). In further runs at the UK Ministry of Defence’s Boscombe Down experimental aircraft testing site, the aircraft achieved 532.1km/h (330 mph) over 15 kilometres – 292.8km/h (182 mph) faster than the previous record. Both records have been officially verified by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the World Air Sports Federation that controls and certifies world aeronautical and astronautical records. During its record-breaking runs, the aircraft, which is part of the UK Governmentbacked ACCEL or ‘Accelerating the Electrification of Flight’ project, also clocked up a maximum top speed of 623km/h (387.4mph) making it the world’s fastest all-electric vehicle. The aircraft was propelled on its record breaking runs by 400kW (500+hp) electric powertrain and the most power-dense propulsion battery pack ever assembled in aerospace. As well as a stunning technical achievement, the project and world record runs provided important data for their future electric power and propulsion systems for all-electric urban air mobility (UAM) and hybrid-electric commuter aircraft. The characteristics that ‘air-taxis’ require from batteries, for instance, are very similar to what was developed for the ‘Spirit of Innovation’. Rolls-Royce has an incredible history of flying speed record attempts and breaking records, dating back to the Schneider Trophies of the early 1930’s. The speed achieved by test pilot and Rolls-Royce Director of Flight Operations Phill O’Dell in the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ was more than 213.04 km/h (132 mph) faster than the previous record set by the Siemens eAircraft powered Extra 330 LE Aerobatic aircraft in 2017. On the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: Her most incredible fashion looks from the 1940s to now Katie Wright takes a look at the monarch’s style evolution.

Q

ueen Elizabeth II is about to reach a major milestone – for on February 6 it will be 70 years since her accession to the throne. Over the years, she’s proved herself a veritable style icon. Here, to mark her Platinum Jubilee, we look back at how the Queen’s fashion has evolved, from her days as a young royal to now…

Queen Elizabeth II with her Maids of Honour after the Coronation; Below: The Queen and Prince Andrew in the grounds of Balmoral, Scotland

Royal bridesmaid In 1946, then 20-year-old Princess Elizabeth acted as bridesmaid at the wedding of Hon. Patricia Mountbatten and Lord Brabourne, wearing a typically Forties style frock with a square neckline and short, puffy sleeves. Regal bride For her own nuptials at Westminster Abbey, the Queen selected a design submitted by her chief couturier Norman Hartnell. The duchesse satin gown was decorated with floral embroidery and came with a 13-foot train. Coronation gown The Queen’s Coronation in 1953 called for another grand gown. Norman Hartnell was enlisted once more, designing a silk floor length dress to which colourful embroideries were added at the suggestion of the Queen. Polo watching Seen in a less formal setting in 1956, the Queen chose a simple short-sleeved dress, lace-up shoes and her trusty black handbag for an outing with Prince Charles, Princess Anne and one of her beloved corgis, to watch the Duke of Edinburgh compete in a polo match. Pastel portrait In this family portrait from 1968, we can see the first signs of what will become Her Majesty’s signature look: a block colour coat dress with black patent court shoes. 1 CH H 2200222 2 47 2 8MMAARRC

Seventies suit Embracing a bold Seventies print, the Queen topped this two-piece skirt suit with a headscarf – another of the monarch’s sartorial calling cards.

Wedding guest Taking a leaf out of her mother’s style book, for the July 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer the Queen chose a flowing aquamarine pleated frock with matching handbag and hat, accessorised with white gloves, shoes and pearls. Bright and beautiful During a visit to a temple in India in 1997, the monarch stood out in a fabulous orange chiffon dress and jacket with a matching hat. Lavender moment Showing off another glamorous wedding outfit, for the nuptials of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999 the Queen donned a lavender hued lace gown with tonal accessories and a feathered headpiece. Sequin style Later the same year, Her Majesty sported possibly her most colourful outfit ever seen in the public, a long-sleeved gown with a sequinned top and bright yellow skirt for the Royal Variety Performance. Crowning glory Pulling out all the stops for a dinner hosted by the Canadian government in 2005, the Queen donned a white gown with a spectacular tiara and fur stole, contrasting the pale ensemble with bold sapphire jewellery. Lemon look Opting for a lemon yellow version of her signature look for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011, the Queen teamed a long-sleeved dress with a floral embellished hat and her trademark Launer handbag. Festive fashion Her Majesty chose a suitably festive hue for one of her few public appearances in 2020, donning a red coat and hat for a Christmas event with other members of the royal family at Windsor Castle. ar problems can be very distressing. Sound entering the ear canal moves ear drum. This vibrates the small bones of hearing called ossicles and this, in turn, moves fluid in the inner ear to convert sound signal to electrical signal. This is interpreted by the brain. Ear problems like wax in the ear canal, ear infections, otosclerosis and ear drum perforation can affect your hearing. To make diagnosis good detailed history, examination and special hearing test are required. As ear is one of special sense, you should always trust ear specialist with extensive experience. Conditions in which ear surgeon can help 1. Cholesteatoma – it is the collection of epidermal tissue in the middle ear which is locally invasive and destructive.

In some cases, ventilation tube called grommets may be required. 3. Otosclerosis – is a condition in which one small bone of hearing gets fixed. It can be treated with hearing aid or surgically. 4. Perforated ear drum – is the condition which can be due to chronic ear infection, trauma due sudden loud noise or change in pressure while flying. 5. DENIM TRENDS:

wide leg jeans to retro jackets This year it’s all about easy-to-wear pieces, says Katie Wright. – we know they’ll be back, so don’t ditch your old faves yet.) As seen on the runways at Valentino, Balenciaga, MSGM and more, slouchy, 90s-inspired styles that sweep the floor as you walk are de rigueur, teamed with luxe knitwear and stiletto boots or slim-fit tops and trainers. If you feel that ultra-baggy jeans drown you a bit, opt for a hem that finishes on the ankle, or wear with leg-lengthening high heels.

n eternal wardrobe staple, denim never really goes out of style. But the way we wear the beloved blue fabric? That never stops evolving. Recently, we’ve seen some seismic sartorial shifts as designers and trendsetters move in a new denim direction, away from restrictive styles to looser silhouettes. That doesn’t mean you have to overhaul your whole wardrobe, however. With a couple of key buys you can update your look ready for spring and beyond. So what’s new for 2022? These are the catwalk and street style-inspired denim trends that are going to be huge this year…

While the spring/summer catwalks were awash with miniskirts, when it came to denim, midi ruled – with calf-length styles seen at Saint Laurent, Dior and Loewe. An ideal transitional piece, a denim midi skirt can be styled with a slouchy jumper and long boots in winter, or a blouse and sandals when the weather warms up.

n turbulent times, fashion can be a comforting and uplifting presence in our lives. What we wear can provide an escape from the craziness of modern life – and this sparks plenty of trends, like 2020’s newfound love of loungewear. Now, the latest style trend to sweep Instagram is a particularly calming one, as it goes all-in on neutrals. Extreme, meme-worthy fashion – like miniature handbags and supersized hats – have a time and place, but what if you want your clothes to be more of a soothing balm? That’s where neutrals come in. Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just about boring beige clothes though, because the options with neutrals are actually endless. Cream, camel, sand, stone, oatmeal – each shade is unique and has its own fashionable ID.

1 EB 46 8 8MFA RRCUHA R2 Y 0 2220 2 1

The coolest way to wear this trend is all about extreme matching. This means going head to toe in a camel jumper, coat, trousers and scarf – the works. Not everything has to be exactly the same shade (after all, that would require far too much effort for what is meant to be a calming trend) – as long as you’re in the neutrals colour spectrum, you’re set. Looking to give highlighter colours a bit of a break and opt for soft and soothing instead? Feast your eyes on the best ways to wear neutrals this season…

COMFY COATS At its core, this trend is about cosiness and comfort – and that’s why teddy coats in tans, creams and buttermilks have stormed Instagram. These are the kind of coats you can throw on over your loungewear and be ready for the outdoors. Choosing a lighter colour – instead of grey or black – gives the look a more modern and chic edge, but the fluffy material means you still feel cocooned. Teddy coats can be engulfing, so if you want to sharpen up your outfit, pair with skinny trousers and chunky biker boots.

LUXE LOUNGEWEAR Let’s face it: loungewear isn’t going anywhere. We’ve all had a taste of wearing comfortable clothes 24/7, and now it’s hard to be interested in anything that doesn’t have an elasticated waist. Luckily, loungewear has well and truly evolved into something you wouldn’t mind being seen in – either on Zoom or, at some point, IRL.

NATTY KNITWEAR Chunky cardigans are back in style, thanks to popstar Taylor Swift. To celebrate the release of her album Folklore last year and the lead single Cardigan, Swift started selling a chunky, cable-knit button-up as part of her merchandise. She sent them to all her celebrity friends, sparking a craze for cardies that’s still going strong. Again, it seems we’re all searching for a bit of comfort in our fashion – so anything that’s warm, soft and cocooning will fit the bill.

“Chunky cardigans are back in style, thanks to popstar Taylor Swift. To celebrate the release of her album Folklore last year and the lead single Cardigan, Swift started selling a chunky, cableknit button-up as part of her merchandise”

While many of us embrace the loungewear trend with open arms, some might miss the days of wearing real trousers. Luckily, it doesn’t seem like zips and buttons have been completely banished just yet. A pair of loose, chic trousers in a subtle colour is the perfect way to ease yourself back into proper pants. They’re not as intense as a pair of jeans, and they’re a grown-up way to wear the neutrals trend. Pair with a chunky knit in a similar colour, French-tucked at the waist to give the silhouette a bit of shape. Essential spring menswear trends Stylists run down the top trends of the season. By Katie Wright.

S

pring is on the way, and there’s a lot to get excited about on the menswear fashion front. The men’s catwalk collections were full of bold colours and cool, vintage-inspired designs – but there was a strong focus on wearability as well, meaning now is a great time to reassess and revamp your wardrobe for the coming months. So, what could stylish guys be wearing this spring/summer? We asked fashion stylists to talk us through the top menswear trends of the season…

SOFT SUITS “The suit is making a major comeback this year,” says celebrity stylist Gemma Sheppard, who has teamed up with Metaventures to become the world’s first fashion stylist working in the metaverse. “While timeless classics like brown, grey and darker blue shades still have their place, lighter shades including beige, cream and even white are really having a moment. Now more than ever, a tailored suit is not just for the office, it’s for everywhere.” Celebrity stylist and DJ Alexis Knox agrees spring is all about soft – not sharp – tailoring: “Designers like Sandro presented suits on the catwalk with a softer structure, light and easy fabric, available in an array of understated colours.” This allows for more versatility and generally means you could get a lot more use out of your suit. “For a more formal look, pair with a bold coloured linen shirt and go sockless with some loafers. To keep it casual, add a simple T-shirt and crisp white trainers,” adds Knox.

VARSITY JACKETS As seen on Ed Sheeran at the Brits, a varsity jacket is a must-have this season. “The classic varsity jacket is a cult favourite amongst A-listers,” says Sheppard, who recommends a boxy, Nineties-inspired style for 1 CH H 2200222 2 57 4 6MMAARRC

UTILITY A huge trend over the last few seasons, the utility aesthetic is still going strong for SS22. Knox says: “To have fun with the essence of the utility jacket, try going head-to-toe in shades of khaki. Or to make the utility jacket a standout fashion moment, wear it with a bold colour block T-shirt, such as red or pink, to really set the jacket off.”

MAXIMALISM

SANDALS ‘Dad sandals’ used to be an insult, but now trendsetters are loving the practical summer footwear. “No longer just for popping to the corner shop, these statement sandals are to be paired with even the most structured looks such as a blazer,” says Knox. “Rock them with a pair of Bermuda shorts and – controversially – take inspiration from Kim Jones’ Dior models and don a sock for the perfect weekend afternoon look.”

“Look blooming iconic this spring by embracing colour,” says Knox. “The catwalk this season was full of head-to-toe block colour outfits from designers such as Canali and Dries van Noten.” For Sheppard, the maximalism trend is about “utilising every inch of clothing in a bold way. If an all-over rainbow-bright look feels too much, begin by opting for some eye-catching accessories such as bags and hats, or style your top half in a vibrant hue,” they suggest. “You can also dilute the vibe by adding denim. If you like seeing vibrant pops in your wardrobe, SS22 will seriously colour you happy!”

TED BAKER ROSTER UTILITY JACKET DARK NAVY, £225, AVAILABLE FROM JOHN LEWIS

SHORTS “With a lot of designers transforming traditional ‘outdoor’ items into street-centric staples, shorts are becoming a nine-to-five must,” says Sheppard. “Not least when on work-from-home Zoom calls.” Extra-short shorts were popular on the catwalks – but you don’t have to flash a lot of flesh to be on trend. “You can breathe easy because oversized Bermuda shorts are back,” adds Sheppard. “This signature beachwear style brushes the knee, usually comes in cotton or denim and can be hemmed or unhemmed.”

HAIR TRENDS

Hairdressers predict the cut and colour trends that will dominate in 2022. By Katie Wright

that will be huge this year, from bob cuts to pastel shades

W

hether it’s a colour refresh or a dramatic cut, transforming your tresses is brilliant way to ring in the new year and boost your

confidence. If you’re wondering what’s fashionable in the hair world right now, we’ve got good news. According to stylists and colourists, this year we’ll be seeing the evolution of soft, retro-inspired cuts and customisable colours, as well as the return of some classic styles and flattering fringes. Here, six hair pros share their 2022 trend predictions…

BOLD BOBS Sharp and chic bobs will be back in a big way, predicts Belle Cannan, co-founder Salon Sloane: “Oozing French-girl cool, a bob bluntly cut to the jawline or down to the collar bone is versatile on all face shapes. Style poker straight, or slightly tousled with undone waves and precise middle partings.” 7 60 0 M MAARRCCHH2 022 02 2 2

Sonia Evans, senior stylist at Charles Worthington Salons, agrees that “Parisian-style blunt bobs with sweepy bangs” will be popular. “This style typically suits heart or long face shapes, but don’t be afraid to adjust the length to where is more flattering to you.” Also feeling the continental cool vibes, designer stylist at Live True London Natalia Vera recommends the ‘Italian bob’ cut: “It’s a short bob that reaches more or less to the lips, a length that gives the face a very youthful appearance. It’s a very versatile cut that looks great on any woman, regardless of hair colour, facial shape or age.”

WARM TONES “We have seen a general ‘warming’ of hair colour over the last year, with less bleached and bold colour tones, and this will continue into 2022,” says Sam Hillerby, hair stylist at John Frieda Salons. “We can expect to see lots of soft butter blondes, caramel fudge, spiced cinnamon and rich chocolate browns – a very indulgent, comforting line-up of colour.”

“We have seen a general ‘warming’ of hair colour over the last year, with less bleached and bold colour tones, and this will continue into 2022,” says Sam Hillerby, hair stylist at John Frieda Salons.

In terms of colour application, balayage (placement of highlights by hand) and ombre will “still be in favour in 2022, but these will have a slight makeover, with brunettes integrating spiced coppers and caramel fudge tones, whilst blondes will enhance their colour using more buttery tones.”

bangs’ (to borrow the American term) now, it’s all about “grown-out fringes that frame the face, shorter in the middle and longer on the sides”, says Barron-Hough. “This style is great if you’re not ready for a full fringe, but would like a change. Shorter pieces frame the face, are beautiful on all hair textures and easy to maintain – this suits everyone and is low maintenance.”

BESPOKE BRUNETTES Christel Barron-Hough, founder and creative director of Stil Salon declares 2022 “the year of the brunette”. Taking inspiration from the natural worlds, the ‘restore’ colour trend is all about calm brown tones “from natural beige through to rich brunette.” This look can be adapted to suit any complexion, Barron-Hough says: “The key is to layer tones to make it look natural and glossy. For high shine, it’s best to opt for a gloss service, as that will darken the hair but add lots of sheen and vibrancy.”

FACE-FRAMING COLOUR An evolution of the balayage technique, faceframing colour combines a base shade with “highlights or vivid colours that create contrast” around the face, says Paco Latorre, creative director at Live True London. “For example, we can do a chocolate brunette base with a platinum or warm blonde face-frame. Or in a copper version, doing the face-frame more chunky with a gold blonde or a vivid wine colour.”

PASTEL HUES

“Now, it’s all about “grown-out fringes that frame the face, shorter in the middle and longer on the sides”, says Barron-Hough

Beyond classic colours, expect to see “a sense of liberation, with pastel hues such as spun sugar, daffodils, palest pink and vibrant purple, mixed and matched with saturated bold hues like harbour blue, pink flamingo and skydive blue”, says Barron-Hough. “This trend looks great when it’s mixed with lots of blonde for contrast.” Evans predicts “creative colours like dusty rose pinks to be hot for 2022” with pastel tones used to enhance blonde or soft brunette shades: “You could opt for panelling pieces for a more discreet look. These can also be placed underneath your hair for a lower maintenance option.”

Wonderful Worktops & Statement Splashbacks Kitchen trends in 2022 from Urban Myth Statement worktops and splashbacks are among the biggest interior design trends for kitchens this year, according to leading kitchen design company Urban Myth.

P

reviously, kitchen surfaces have been associated with minimalist, neutral colours; sleek whites and greys paired with chrome or silver accents for an understated look that ‘goes with anything’. But recently, we’ve started to become a little braver in our tastes. It began with small yet bold accents in fabrics and accessories, and now we’re increasingly attracted to more long-lasting design statements to display our individuality. We spoke to Peter Hill, Head Designer at Urban Myth, who has seen this trend first-hand. Peter

says, “Our customers are asking about the materials available to add drama and personality to their home and we believe the answer is to look at the many options for worktops and splashbacks. There’s been a great deal of advancement in the technology for creating real stone effects in Quartz and sintered stone, with vein matching and ‘full body pattern’, which means the design runs all the way through.” When it comes to designing a kitchen, Peter says, “it’s important to think of your focal point, whether that be your work surface, cabinetry or kitchen island. your worktop and splashback is that these can add high level impact, whilst also being elements that can be updated relatively easily.” There are several beautiful materials and design aspects that make for a stunning focal point for a kitchen worktop or splashback and Urban Myth have selected their key trends for 2022.

SEAMLESS SPLASHBACKS Continuing the worktop material up onto the splashback as a single slab adds impact and style to an interior. The veining and patterning on the surface of the stone adds depth and character, without having to bring in too much colour if that seems overpowering.

CHUNKY QUARTZ Noticeably thicker worktops in bold colours and eye-catching patterns will take centre stage in 2022. Being chunkier than average, these worktops maximise their impact and durability.

DARK AND DRAMATIC Urban Myth have seen dark interiors become popular over the last year and this trend is set to stay. A dark worktop and splashback instantly delivers a dramatic statement, which you can either contrast with neutral cabinetry or go ‘all in’ with a completely black scheme.

FLOWING FORM Create a cascading waterfall effect for your worktops. Instead of abruptly stopping at the edge of your cabinet or kitchen island, this design continues vertically down the side, creating a seamless flow to the floor.

“A dark worktop and splashback instantly delivers a dramatic statement”

Introducing Gabriella Crespi:

abriella Crespi wasn’t your average Milanese muse. She was beautiful, yes, but she also had what other creatives like to call the eye: a way of looking at things and making them wonderful. It began with a series of objets d’art she made for her girlfriends in the late 1950s: small velveteen keepsakes that she embossed with snippets of poetry. Like so many great Crespi styles, they were initially supposed to be kept private. And yet when Christian Dior caught wind of them, he begged Crespi to sell them in his store in Paris, spotting the kind of everyday artistry that had been missing from the world of haute-couture. It’s a quality she would continue to cultivate in the years that followed. Whereas icons of decades past had favoured rigorous lines and austere dressing, Crespi wanted to design styles that were

lush, vital and alive. The ones we’re interested in today are known as the Bohemian ‘72 Collection. A compilation of louche, rattan loungers that promise to bring the warmth of the Tropics home. “[With Bohemia] I wanted to create a house of sun,” Crespi once declared, inspired by the easygoing garden rooms she found on her overseas adventures. To do so, she would have to abandon her usual mediums of brass and stone, reaching instead for something softer. She thought back to her many travels in Asia. The houses she encountered. And the way organic textures like rattan, straw and bamboo seemed to play with light. Mastering their many movements would prove challenging work. Each of the rattan palms had to be steamed to approximately 100 degrees, before

To the chagrin of the public, the collection was only ever made available to private clients at the time — largely due to the intense craftsmanship that went into each piece. And yet we bring good news on this front. In collaboration with Crespi’s estate, the Bohemian ‘72 Lounge Collection has been faithfully reissued by the masters of modern nostalgia at Gubi. being bent around a free-flowing mould. And yet Crespi didn’t believe in cutting corners, pioneering a wonderfully sinuous style of furniture that saw reams of the rich material coiled layer upon layer. Next came the pillows. At the time, low-slung lounge culture was in full bloom, but Crespi wanted to take it further, angling the cushions at 115 degrees so as to inspire the sitter to sink into new rhythms and flows. Observing, perhaps, how clouds chased each other through the sky. Or else the way an overhead bourgenvilla flourished just so. Light enough to be brought outside on a bright summer’s day, the Bohemian ‘72 Lounge collection did away with the last vestiges of formality under

Centred around the Latin word for ‘always’, Semper’s shifting form and changeable lighting effects is representative of the seasonal movement and varying light levels of the Sun’s path. Inviting change with its tilting layers, Semper caters for multi-tasking modern spaces and passes the curation of home lighting to the hands of the user.

MAYA WALL PLANTER Introducing an exciting addition to Tom’s soughtafter Green Range, the Maya Wall Planter is the answer to spaces that are calling out for greenery but lack surface area to display indoor houseplants. Complementing one of Tom’s newest lighting ranges, the Verso Wall Light brings wooden art forms to wall spaces. An ornate marriage of balance and light, the Verso Range is an asymmetrical wooden work of art that welcomes a fresh perspective. Forged from the Latin word to ‘spin’, the sculptural Verso Lighting Range calls back to nature and showcases the gravity defying, swooping motion of falling leaves in the wind. Igniting creativity within your space, the Verso Range looks different from every angle and exhibits its varying form to add playful personality to a wide range of interiors. The innovative design can be positioned at different angles to create focused lighting within your space, from cosy reading corners and hardworking hallways to calming bedside spaces, its varying form adds playful personality to a wide range of interiors.

Top considerations for an indoor pool

S

o, you’ve decided on an indoor swimming pool, what now? There are many decisions to be made along the way, attention to detail and precise planning is crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house. For anyone wanting to begin the process, here are the answers to key questions to help with the decision making: Are you interested in a stand alone indoor pool house or a pool house extension to your home? This is the biggest decision you’ll need to make when it comes to your indoor swimming pool as placement and location play a crucial role in the success of a project. There are advantages and disadvantages to both options. You’ll need

17 02 4 MMA AR RC CH H 22002 22 2

to think about main use for the swimming pool, do you want a place to escape to away from the home or do you want it attached to your home? Will it play a big part in your daily routine? Do you have a budget you’re working towards? Will you need planning permission? For a stand alone pool house that is freestanding, complies to the permitted development design criteria and doesn’t affect your permitted development rights, it’s likely you won’t need planning permission. However, a pool house extension to your home will need planning permission. Origin have a wealth of experience in gaining planning approval for indoor pools and they also manage the whole process for you so, no need to panic!

“Attention to detail and precise planning is crucial when designing a successful swimming pool”

Do you start with an architect? No, Origin do it all, providing initial design sketches and budgetary proposals free of charge in their feasibility studies. Architects are extremely well versed with domestic construction details, but unfortunately an indoor pool is very different. An architect can provide an outline design for an indoor pool but this may be an unnecessary expense as many don’t have the knowledge or insurances needed to take that design further. Which features have the biggest impact on cost? The most popular size for an indoor pool is between 8m to 12m as the bigger the pool, the bigger the cost. For avid swimmers, there are some excellent counter current swim devices available making the size of the pool less important. Buying a pool cover is one of the bigger investments you’ll make throughout the process but they’re worth it as an important part of the pool design. They retain heat, reduce running costs and provide a level of safety, making them a necessity rather than an option. When adding different features to your indoor swimming pool, it’s important to remember your original motivation. Did you want to create a place of relaxation? Your own fitness centre? A social hub for friends and family? Why Origin? It’s simple, Origin does it all. Building pools is

Origin has all the design and engineering expertise necessary and manage the whole building process for you, from initial concept, planning and design to completion and beyond, eliminating the need for you to employ separate companies. Access to a pool right on your doorstep means it’s easy to swim everyday in the privacy of your own home, either to maintain a healthy lifestyle or simply as a space to relax. Origin have been building award winning swimming pools for over 40 years and in that time have successfully completed thousands of pools and pool houses to a wide range of specifications. Get The Bridgerton Look B

ridgerton is all about regency style and flamboyant details such as swags and tails, columns, urns brimming with blooms and feathers, fruit in elaborate metal bowls, French style furniture awash with gold elaborate acanthus carvings, ancestral oil paintings and spectacular glass chandeliers. Achieve this symbolic aesthetic in your home by styling large-scale urns with blooms and long leafy foliage in the centre of your dining table, and pair with French style carved gold chairs and sofas upholstered in silks or Regency stripe fabrics. In terms of colours, the palettes used within the drawing and dining rooms of the Bridgerton’s house meticulously resemble and exemplify the tones of the regency era: Wedgewood-esque pale blue damask panels with coordinating paint colours that symbolise the graciousness and elegance of the time, paired with pieces of dark wood furniture placed in a considered manner to break up the muted colours.

SMALL

SPACE STYLE

It’s possible to live large despite sleeping small, says Luke Rix-Standing.

Bags and boxes are good for long-term storage, but slide-out clothes drawers are especially expedient, as they lessen the need for that other great space-snatcher, a large wardrobe.

F

or many of us, house space is a fiercely contested commodity, and you need to squeeze the most out of every square inch. But luckily there are plenty of clever tricks you can use to make this happen. Mirrors, multifunctional furniture and a recurring colour or pattern are all your friends. Here’s how to make even the smallest bedroom feel larger – without having to sleep on the sofa… Let there be light It’s the oldest rule in the book: Bright, breezy spaces feel looser, larger and lighter, so put your bed on the opposite wall from your windows and keep them clear of clutter. Thick, heavy curtains will help you keep warm in winter, but they will also protrude physically and visually into your room, so dress your windows with unobtrusive blinds or rollers instead. Under-bed storage is your friend Every square inch counts when you’re space saving, and there should be no room for monsters beneath the bed once you’ve finished economising.

Make it a a virtue One person’s cramped is another person’s cozy, and a few soft furnishings can turn a poky shoebox into a snug den or bolthole. Think fuzzy blankets, chocolate box ornaments, warming lamps and lighting – anything you might associate with a comfy Scandinavian cabin on a cold winter’s day. Mirror, mirror Bedroom, entrance hall or downstairs loo – mirrors have long been number one on the list of domestic design tricks. They don’t add any physical space, of course, but they send light bouncing round the walls and can trick the eye into doubling a room’s depth. For the best brightening effects, place your mirror opposite a window and for the greatest sense of space, consider the wall opposite the door. Bed size matters We know, it’s so tempting to snap up an XXL king size and spend every night splayed out like a starfish, but if floor space is precious, your bed is the obvious place to seek savings. If you’re 6’4” and married, fair play; if you’re 5’3” and single, perhaps consider downsizing. ornaments; a rail for hanging clothes – anything really besides a useless wooden plank. Think vertically Just as city centres maximise space by building upwards, so too can your bedroom. Think of a room in terms of volume, rather than surface area, and prioritise floor-to-ceiling units that can squeeze the most from every inch of your room. Add shelves atop wardrobes and cupboards, or just use them as storage space anyway. If you are investing in mirrors, make them full-length, and design your room to draw the eye upwards. Consider vertically-striped wallpaper, a different-coloured ceiling, and high-hung pictures and decor.

at least three of them, and they can easily turn into dead space. Consider anything with a right angle – tables, light fixtures, or wraparound, triangular shelving. Employ a feature wall Every room benefits from a statement centrepiece, and in a shoe-box bedroom it can hardly be the four-poster bed. Physical focal points may struggle to squeeze in, so instead opt for a visual one – a well decorated wall with an artwork, a photo collage, or simply a bold pattern.

“Think of a room in terms of volume, rather than surface area”

Choose furniture strategically Pick pieces that can serve multiple purposes, or at least do the job as efficiently as possible. Double up your desk and bedside table; pick a compact cabinet over an elaborate chest of drawers; investigate foldaway futons. Curate your colour scheme Lighter colours feel airier and more open, and there’s a reasons that whites, greys and varying shades of cream crop up again and again in the centrefolds of interior design magazines. From your paint job to flooring and furnishings, avoid darker colours that might lend a claustrophobic feel. Establish a theme It doesn’t take much for small spaces to feel disorganised, and giving your room a designed, curated feel brings a much-needed sense of order. It could be a colour or pattern – recurring on cushions, bed covers and wallpaper – or a simple motif. Declutter Minimalism is as fashionable as it is functional, and most bedrooms bear at least a few bulky burdens that would be better off down the charity shop. Do you really need that brick-sized Nokia with the first ever version of Snake, the box of expired medicines, or the tabletop popcorn maker you used once in 2015? Marshal your corners Corners are notoriously difficult to bring to heel, but unless you live in a lighthouse every room has NA OR VE M CM HB E2 R 0 2220 2801 9 5
