TATE MODERN PRESENTS ANDY WARHOL 12 March – 6 september 2020. A new look at the extraordinary life and work of the pop art superstar
A
ndy Warhol (1928–87) was one of the most recognisable artists of the late 20th century, yet his life and work continue to fascinate and be interpreted anew. A shy, gay man from a religious, migrant, low income household, he forged his own distinct path to emerge as the epitome of the pop art movement. This major new exhibition at Tate Modern – the first at the gallery for almost 20 years – offers visitors a rare personal insight into how Warhol and his work marked a period of cultural transformation. Drawing upon recent scholarship, it will provide a new lens through which to view this American icon. Featuring over 100 works from across his remarkable career, the show will shed light on how Warhol’s experiences helped shape his unique take on 20th century culture, positioning him within the shifting creative and political landscape in which he worked. While he is best known for his iconic paintings of Coca-Cola bottles and Marilyn Monroe that held up a mirror to American culture, the exhibition will emphasise recurring themes around desire, identity and belief that emerge from Warhol’s biography. Key works from the pop period, such as Marilyn Diptych 1962, Elvis I and II 1963/1964 and Race Riot 1964, will be examined in relation to contemporary issues around American culture and politics, while Warhol’s limitless ambition to push the boundaries of media will be represented via his famous Screen Tests 1964–6 and a recreation of the psychedelic multimedia environment of Exploding Plastic Inevitable 1966. Visitors will also be able to experience Warhol’s floating Silver Clouds 1966 installation, initially meant to signal his ‘retirement’ from painting in favour of moviemaking. He famously stated that ‘good business is the best art’: the exhibition will look at how Warhol’s forays into publishing and TV, as well as his interest in club culture. The exhibition will emphasise his skill as a painter

and colourist with a room dedicated to the largest grouping of his 1975 Ladies and Gentlemen series ever shown in the UK. These striking portraits depict figures from New York’s transgender community, including iconic performer and activist, Marsha ‘Pay it no mind’ Johnson - a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Warhol’s final works of the 80s, such as the poignant Sixty Last Suppers 1986 – on view at Tate Modern for the first time in this country – will be considered in relation to the artist’s untimely death as well as the unfolding HIV/AIDS epidemic, which ultimately went on to impact the lives of many in his close circle. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, as well as an extensive programme of public talks and film screenings with exclusive new merchandise collections in the gallery shops. LICENSED TO THRILL… BUT IS HIS WATCH INSURED? The latest James Bond film, No Time to Die, will be released on April 2. In it, James Bond will be wearing an Omega Seamaster watch, just as he has done since Goldeneye in 1995. Even though the latest 007 Edition model of the Omega watch won’t be a limited edition, it is currently only available on a wait list and is priced at £7390.
L
uxury watches, such as those from Omega, Rolex, Patek Philippe and Breitling have always been popular as investment purchases. As well as having the highest standards of design and manufacture, factors such as designer brand recognition, demand and rarity means that they will also almost certainly increase in value over time. And of course they look great! The question of valuations for watches and other high net worth items is one which needs to be thought about when it comes to your household insurance. Many people look at the obvious things such as computers, phones and televisions as the basis for their insurance valuation. However they may have lost track of the value of items such as their art, designer jewellery and watches. And as for other items like upmarket handbags and shoes, fine wine, and high quality furnishings – do you make an educated guess? Do some research on the internet and hope for the best? “Many of our high net worth clients don’t realise how important it is to value their household assets properly,” comments David Higgins, an insurance adviser with Scrutton Bland who specialises in private client insurance services. “If you have a busy lifestyle it is all too easy to rush the process resulting in a very rough estimation, which may prove entirely inadequate and have serious consequences in

the event of a claim.” “It is of vital importance to determine an accurate replacement value of the contents of your property,” David continues. “This is why it’s important to work with a specialist insurance broker who can discuss changes in the value of items like vintage watches and jewellery and has knowledge of the prevailing trends within the art and antiques markets.” “They can also help in circumstances where the artist of an insured item dies during the period of insurance, in case the value of the piece increases significantly, and extra cover is required. Plus they can give guidance on the storage of valuable items and the right kind of safe to have in order to satisfy the requirements of your insurance policy. In the event that a claim is made, a professional insurance broker can take care of much of the administrative work for you, and will give you peace of mind knowing there is a named person you can speak to about your claim who is working hard on your behalf.” It can be difficult for people to calculate the value of their possessions, and it is unrealistic to expect everyone to be an expert. Amongst other advantages, using an experienced, independent and regulated insurance broker may save you time - something even James Bond would value.

BRAESIDE SCHOOL: A SMALL SCHOOL WITH BIG PLANS The Oak-Tree Group of Schools takes pride in its traditional, family approach coupled with its modern, forward-thinking strategy for delivering an excellent service to families
A
ready widely-known for its outstanding education, the Group has spent the last academic year creating plans and beginning work on two major developments at Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill. We speak to Matthew Hagger, Group Managing Principal of The Oak-Tree Group of Schools about the exciting plans. Q: Tell us about Braeside’s upcoming developments. A: Currently Braeside is set across two sites – the Juniors in the smaller Palmerston Road building and the Seniors on the larger High Road site. From September 2020 the two halves of Braeside are going to be brought together into one all-through school for children aged 2½ to 16. All pupils will be taught at the main site on the High Road, Buckhurst Hill. Braeside is currently an all girls’ school. The second exciting news is that the school will be welcoming boys into the school as part of a phased plan from September 2021, starting in Kindergarten and Reception. Q: What will merging the two sites mean for the children? A: Our younger pupils will be able to make use of the excellent facilities at the larger and betterequipped main site. Teachers will find it easier to track progression and prepare for the move into Year 7 and beyond. For our senior pupils, we will improve the feeling of being one school community and provide an environment that will have a positive impact on the quality of education received. We anticipate the extracurricular provision increasing over time as there will be more opportunities to open clubs to a wider range of children when they are all together. 20 MARCH 2020
Q: Will there be any changes to the school building? A: After the various building programmes since 2017 to expand our provision, the main site has more than enough space to accommodate the junior classes. There will be a minor reorganisation of rooms over the summer break, with most areas refurbished and redecorated. This will include making sure that the children have enough space to play and learn. We will continue to use the many local off-site facilities such as the Peter May Centre, Old Loughtonians Hockey Club, Loughton Pool and the Buckhurst Hill Cricket Ground. Q: Why have you decided to make the change to co-education? A: We believe that a co-educational environment is in the best interests of the children and will benefit their learning and development as we move forward. It also means that whole families will be able to access the Braeside experience and educational journey. The world is co-educational, and mixing boys and girls together builds character and education in life. There are also multiple academic benefits to be had for both genders in working together in a unified environment. Q: What are the benefits of co-education learning from Kindergarten upwards? A: At this young age, socialisation with other children is vital and part of the learning and development curve. It makes sense at this stage for younger children to be educated in a co-educational setting. Parents with children of both genders will also benefit from choosing one school that accommodates both boys and girls.
Braeside is currently an all girls’ school. The second exciting news is that the school will be welcoming boys into the school as part of a phased plan from September 2021, starting in Kindergarten and Reception

SWEET 16th BIRTHDAY pARTY T
Not for the faint hearted!
aking on any special occasion for the ones among us lucky enough to have been born after the millennium is no mean feat. Add to that the daughter of a well-known and respected celebrity from the local area, we needed to up the ante. Our client wanted an occasion to mark her turning 16 and we were delighted to help. Thankfully mum was well aware of the pitfalls to avoid and worked with us closely to ensure everyone had a great time. Based at their home in Chigwell, we erected a Marquee to accommodate 200 guests. We carefully heras fenced specific areas for revellers to occupy and made sure all of the outside areas were well lit. Inside we installed a reveal curtain so that once the guests had arrived and enjoyed a welcome drink we were able to open the full space revealing the DJs in the club room. Full production was installed through MJB, this included star cloth lining, dancefloor, elevated DJ rig, moving heads and a hint of dry ice for dramatic effect. Two separate LED bars gave the marquee a party feel. Guests were treated to wood fired pizzas, sweet table and free non-alcoholic drinks for the duration. Behind the scenes there was lot more to it, 10 security staff were widely spread to ensure everyone

was having fun within the necessary boundaries. Every guest was searched, bags left at the front desk and any unnecessary contraband removed only to be returned to them on leaving. If their name wasn’t down they weren’t coming in! We made sure we had a list of everyone’s names, parents’ names and their contact details. Now being 16 is a distant memory for most of us at MJB but rest assured, times have changed. These young adults will push the boundaries in every way thinkable. We accept that and are firm believers that with all the pressures put upon this age group, they should be able to have fun and enjoy themselves away from the usual constraints of home and school, that said, we must ensure their safety and enforce rules where necessary. We will always try to remain in the background but if things escalate, we are calm and confident in our measured responses. There were certainly some stories from the night but the event went brilliantly, with a very happy Birthday girl and a relieved Mum and Dad. Having organised over 30 parties specifically for 16-18 year olds in the last 2 years; we are pleased to offer our advice to anyone considering such an event…Just make sure you’re sitting down! www.mjb-entertainment.com

A SPECIAL SENSE NEEDS A SPECIALIST SURGEON
THE DETAILS
E
ar problems can be very distressing. Sound entering the ear canal moves ear drum. This vibrates the small bones of hearing called ossicles and this, in turn, moves fluid in the inner ear to convert sound signal to electrical signal. This is interpreted by the brain. Ear problems like wax in the ear canal, ear infections, otosclerosis and ear drum perforation can affect your hearing. To make diagnosis good detailed history, examination and special hearing test are required. As ear is one of special sense, you should always trust ear specialist with extensive experience. Conditions in which ear surgeon can help 1. Cholesteatoma – it is the collection of epidermal tissue in the middle ear which is locally invasive and destructive. 2. Glue ear – it is a condition in which middle ear which filled with air gets filled with fluid. In most cases, it clears without treatment. In some cases, ventilation tube called grommets may be required. 3. Otosclerosis – is a condition in which one small bone of hearing gets fixed. It can be treated with hearing aid or surgically. 4. Perforated ear drum – is the condition which can be due to chronic ear infection, trauma due sudden loud noise or change in pressure while flying. 5. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss – is the rapid unexplained rapid hearing loss which can require emergency medical treatment. The main treatment is early intervention with oral steroids with or without steroid injection in the ear.

rom the Golden Globes to the Oscars, awards season brought with it a glorious parade of designer fashion. While there were many spectacular looks on the red carpets, it’s safe to say some of these outfits are not the kind of thing we can imagine wearing on a night out - we’re looking at you, Billy Porter, and your crystal-fringed mechanical hat at the Grammys. On the other hand, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found for us mere mortals, thanks to the more wearable ensembles that also featured - whether you’re looking for wedding guest style ideas, a prom dress or black tie attire. Here are four awards season fashion trends and where to shop them on the high street...
Pink One of the biggest trends of awards season, we saw a huge spectrum of pink shades on show, from palest blush (actor Regina King and leading actress winner Laura Dern at the Oscars were a highlight), to brightest fuchsia (Little Women star Florence Pugh rocked a popping pink Dries Van Noten number at the Baftas). Which hue is for you? These 50 MARCH 2020

Black was anything but boring at the Baftas, where Rooney Mara and Margot Robbie both donned floor-length dresses with interesting sleeve detailing. You can do the same by looking for long black dresses with ruffles, lace or asymmetric necklines, complementing your gown with a celebrity-style updo and a bold red lip. Bows While J-Lo’s Golden Globes dress divided opinion - some thought the gold and green confection made her look like a Christmas present - on the whole, we’re all on board with the oversized bow trend. The bigger the better is the mantra here. But if you want to avoid the gift wrapping comparisons, keep it simple with one carefully placed bow on a formfitting frock. Old Hollywood glamour was another major trend, with stars like Renee Zellweger opting for a sleek sequinned column dress, while newcomer Beanie Feldstein chose a full-skirted floral gown. The vintage glamour look works well for proms and black tie events - you wouldn’t want to risk upstaging the bride with a showstopping gown when attending a wedding, would you? or example, the choice now with regards to windows and doors is actually quite amazing. You can choose sliding doors bi-fold doors, aluminium frames, Upvc, double or triple glazed, so really a family run company that can advise you rather than sell to you is what your really looking for. Good news, Essex Windows and Doors don’t have hard sell tactics , they actually don’t have any sales people on commission, eager to stay all night on one appointment! It’s a small caring family run company that will offer you a free quotation, some professional advice and leave you to make your mind up. Wendy and Jon Wakely run Essex Windows and Doors and their business ethic is very much top end products reasonably priced with good honest advice and no hard sell. Jon has been in the industry for more years than he cares to remember! He started out a fresh faced City & Guilds apprentice with a national house builder, then worked his way up to a project

manger. He was then head hunted by one of his suppliers in the Aluminium trade where he learned all about aluminium windows and doors and Upvc products. Jon decided along with Wendy that the distances he was travelling with work (by then he was an area manger) and the work life balance had become unmanageable so Essex Windows and Doors was born. Wendy, Jon and now Alex, a former colleague of Jons, who joined the company, have now been based in their new showroom for two years. They will of course offer home visits but they believe it gives people peace of mind to come to a professional showroom and see the products and know that they are not dealing with a fly by night company! Although they are clearly not fly by night as they are certified by Certass and have many good testimonials on Check-a-Trade and My Builder.
Good news, Essex Windows & Doors don’t have hard sell tactics.

Designers To Watch in 2020: Patricia Urquiola Words: anna hoWEll, Chaplins
Patricia urquiola is perhaps the most famous female designer alive today. and yet for all the awards and accolades, it’s her intense energy that distinguishes her from the rest of the field. it’s a quality she can be relied upon to bring to every project that she undertakes — be that re-energising iconic hotels or reimagining the future of outdoor living. as part of the Chaplins’ designers to Watch in 2020 series, we sat down with Patricia to talk politics, artistic challenges and all things Cassina.
financial or class. A dream would be designing behaviours, to improve the quality of our daily life, while simultaneously improving the impact that these have on our surroundings.
What’s your greatest challenge as Art Director of Cassina? I have a great respect for the brand, my aim since 2015 is to bring a contemporary way of doing things and to project Cassina towards the future without forgetting its glorious past. I want to be sure that the brand will continue to have its “experimental” spirit in order to enrich its broad archive. My role is not about creating and commissioning new items but also discovering how to keep Cassina alive and evolving. Does the political Zeitgeist influence the way you design? Or are they two separate things? Not only the political agenda, in my work I like to reflect and observe the whole society. I observe everything; I need to understand where contemporaneity is going. Designers and architects need to observe the social scene to come to a tangible synthesis. Today, for instance, we cannot design an object without taking into consideration its impact on the environment. As recently exhibited at the Triennale di Milano, we’re left with a “Broken Nature”, we’re more conscious than ever of our problems and we’re ready to really change our habits and our consumption. So, my work cannot be limited to, for example, the selection of eco-compatible materials, but it needs to re-imagine every aspect of the entire production cycle and transport. It’s important that we designers work together with the companies to facilitate all of this. It is, of course, a long process. What does your dream commission look like in 2020? I can’t answer this question precisely, I am lucky enough to work with many different companies, developing diverse projects for many years now. I’m currently working on my personal exhibition in Madrid, of course the art direction for Cassina and other projects for Milan Design Week in April 2020. I can say, however, that my mind is always busy to find feasible solutions for an optimistic future, dedicating myself to defend any kind of diversity and reduce any kind of gap either gender, social,

Are there any trends or ideas from the past year that you’ll be taking with you into the new decade? I have never believed in trends; I care more about creating empathy and the sense of place and time. I start each project with a blank page and try to visualize every user’s need and develop everything based on this. Every brand is unique with its own history and a very different way of working therefore I create a different relationship and dialogue for each client. When you’re not in the studio working, where can we find you? I like going to the cinema and visiting museums with my family. It’s a sort of continuous research for my work. I’m also a bookworm, I love to read; frequently I find ideas and clues that I apply to my design projects. I’m often travelling for work; it has become indeed an important part of my life. When I’m abroad I love to dedicate some time, unfortunately not very much, for myself to get in contact with other cultures, visiting exhibitions, small museums or simply walking around. Travelling is an important source of inspiration for me. Ibiza has been my family’s summer escape since I was a little child. Though it has changed a lot, it was an island of freedom full of artists and hippies; very different from Oviedo, my birthplace. I guess it was a sort of first source of inspiration with these free ideas. Each year I go back to the island and disconnect from the world to enjoy my family. Feeling inspired? Don’t miss the opportunity to pop by our showroom where we have a range of Cassina and Patricia Urquiola designs on display. You can also stay tuned with our Designers To Watch in 2020 series via the Chaplins Furniture blog — your first point of call for all things interiors. Entertaining becomes effortless with sufficient seating while still allowing the cooks to be the attentive hosts to all guests. Cleverly concealed down-draft extractor, cladded 64 MARCH 2020
with matching worktop, is completely hidden when not in use. Remotely switch the extractor on and it rises uniquely at full height which can prove invaluable during those Sunday morning fry ups, ensuring no one gets splattered while painlessly removing all steam & smell. Statuario quartz worktop offers low maintenance while complimenting the Extreme Matt doors contrasting against the deep dark Graphite while the prominent medium grey veins adds an alluring rhythm to the overall aesthetics. Inner beauty wanders throughout the kitchen with matching Graphite carcasses as well as Graphite strip rails for that totally inconspicuous look so rare in today’s marketplace. Lots of drawers, expertly concealed 85 litre bins and tall slimline pull out chrome baskets allows plenty of accessible storage at your fingertips, all without a handle or stainless steel rail in sight. Designed for cooking. Designed for living. Designed for you.
