Protecting your business during divorce

If you are a business owner you will want to make every effort to protect your business from economic shocks and plan for almost every financial eventuality. But sometimes it’s what happens in your family life which can have the biggest impact on your business. Valuing your business within the divorce process If your business would have a substantial value if sold, it is likely to be considered an asset as part of the divorce, and valued within the divorce process.

How the value of the business is determined If a business needs to be valued, an expert accountant will undertake a valuation on behalf of both the husband and wife. They are known as a single joint expert and a range of values can be obtained for the same business, all of which would be considered by a matrimonial judge to be correct. It is therefore important that you instruct the right accountant to prepare the report.

Is a spouse entitled to half of the business? Not necessarily. Liquidity is an area that the accountant will also need to consider. They should advise how much money the business can afford to pay out without negatively Authorised and Regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

impacting its day to day running. They also need to consider the tax consequences of making this payment.

Will the business need to be sold? The sale of a business as part the divorce is very unusual, unless both parties agree that a sale would be the best outcome.

What happens if your spouse has shares in the company when you divorce? A couple may both own shares in a company – even if one of the spouses does not undertake much or any work for the company. If the couple divorce, the shares of one spouse are often transferred to the other spouse as part of the divorce settlement. The accountant should value both spouses’ shareholdings and confirm the tax that will be payable if those shares are transferred to the other spouse. For all life’s legal needs. We have legal experts across London and Southern regions. Meetings available via telephone, facetime or video call.

or release at 12.00pm on Thursday 11th June: For 2020 Henley Festival has announced that it will be going digital, presenting a 2-hour evening concert, streamed on the Henley Festival website with performances from the Hurley House Hotel on Sunday 12th July from 7.30pm – 9.30pm on what would be the final day of the festival. Popstar Will Young will perform some of his classic hits including Love Revolution, Joy and Light my fire. He says: “It’s a pleasure to be able use a home filmed show, the band and I have been working on during lockdown for Henley, a place I’ve performed in and loved. I grew up not too far from there, so it is almost a virtual home-town show.” Soul singer Beverley Knight will perform a short 40 minute concert of her top hits. There will also be performances from classical pianist Hao Zi Yoh, and number one Jazz musician Joe Stilgoe. Comedy will be provided by Rory Bremner who will perform some new topical material, interviewed by cricket commentator David Gower who says “As a guest in previous years I have grown to love the atmosphere and diversity of the many talents on show at the Henley Festival so it is a great pleasure to add a little something back with this year’s digital event” Festival goers can watch the digital concert

Anyone who holds tickets to the 2020 festival will be able to use them in 2021. Henley Festival CEO Nick Mattingley said: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to offer a digital version of Henley Festival for 2020 with some of the UK’s best loved performers. Monaco Yacht Show 2020 A superyacht industry support show. september 23 – 26, 2020, Port hercule, Monaco

T

he Principality of Monaco and Informa have announced a secure, not-for-profit event in 2020 They have confirmed they are working together to deliver an intimate, not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in Port Hercule in September 2020, with full details to be announced in the coming weeks. The proposed event will employ the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness and be dedicated to supporting the speedy recovery of the industry post COVID-19, providing an invaluable platform for designers, brokers, shipyards and other key players within the yachting industry to connect with their customers and share ideas in a safe environment.

Return & Recovery post the COVID-19 Pandemic Like most industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a marked impact on the international yachting community, with many businesses temporarily closed and staff furloughed, and the usual annual cycle of industry activity severely disrupted. As countries and locations around the world gradually relax lockdown restrictions and ease control measures, it is imperative that the superyacht community is supported in every way possible to help the industry return and recover safely and quickly.

The 30th Monaco Yacht Show in September 2020 With this in mind, The Monaco Yacht Show has been working closely with the Principality of Monaco to determine how best to support the industry in 2020. This year’s Monaco Yacht Show is scheduled from 23 to 26 September. With control measures steadily being relaxed in Monaco, around Europe and internationally, on current course and speed, this should allow for a carefully staged event to still take place this year. Therefore, it is our intention to retain these dates for the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show and work with

16 JULY 2020

suppliers and local authorities over the coming weeks to confirm full details of the event. In the spirit of the history and position of the event within the superyacht industry, the 30th Monaco Yacht Show will be run on a not-for-profit basis, recognizing the challenges facing everyone post the COVID-19 pandemic and, therefore, providing direct support to all attendees and exhibitors from across the market. Whilst the intimate nature of the 2020 event will prioritize the safety of participants, both Informa and the Monaco Principality are committed to ensuring the quality of the event and show experience is maintained for everyone. Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive, Informa Markets (organiser of the Monaco Yacht Show) said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on all industries, not least the international yachting community. As we move to the other side of the pandemic, all parts of the industry need to work collaboratively to ensure a speedy return and recovery. We are playing our part by hosting a notfor-profit Monaco Yacht Show in 2020, providing an opportunity for the community to come together, share ideas, meet with customers and start to rebuild positive momentum.” www.monacoyachtshow.com

menswear history. Upon completion this year, the entire second floor of Harrods will be the new home for Menswear and Sports. At 155,000sq ft, it will be the ultimate menswear destination in the world. Michael Ward, Managing Director at Harrods, said: “Menswear has experienced a quiet revolution over the past few years in terms of innovation and customer demand. Menswear within Harrods has gone from strength to strength, and we want to match this growth with the investment in a truly unique destination. The launch of Mens Superbrands is the first step in this exciting journey, which will create a new home for the Harrods Man in 2020. Mens Superbrands has been specifically designed to provide the most exceptional shopping experience.” Simon Longland, Head of Menswear at Harrods said: “We wanted to create menswear destination like no other - somewhere that men want to visit, will enjoy visiting, a space to inspire and excite, but most importantly offers an excellent service and product proposition. The boutiques are flagship store concepts, not department store concepts’ When you enter the boutiques, you are totally immersed in the world of the brand – however as these are flagship concepts, it is amped up on a scale not seen in any retail environment. We’ve focused on furniture, not fixtures, to elevate the boutique experience to something that feels domestic with lounge chairs and side tables.” Designed by David Collins Studio, Men’s Superbrands establishes a new luxury department that combines the aesthetic of classic men’s

tailoring with mid-century architectural references, and a newly devised floor plan that engages the consumer and offers ease of navigation and shopability. Extensive research of the Harrods architectural features and archive inspired elements of the design concept, making particular reference to the detailing within, the cabinetry, displays and interiors. The Harrods logo subtly permeates the details, appearing in stitched leather, marquetry and bronze inlay in stone. Mens Superbrands is a department for every man, of every age, from every culture; for fathers and sons. Mens Superbrands is an inclusive space of the most elevated of fashion brands.

The history of menswear at Harrods Menswear at Harrods dates back more than 120 years. We launched our first men’s department in 1894 with men’s umbrellas, socks and more. The launch of menswear at Harrods was a pioneering moment for men’s fashion in the United Kingdom. By the turn of the century, Harrods had expanded its offering to include bespoke tailoring, as well as ready-to-wear – a proposition unique for London. Harrods’ commitment to menswear was evident with the opening of the tailoring workshop on Hans Crescent, built to provide a bespoke service to customers looking for suiting. In 1930, menswear took centre stage with the launch of The Man’s Shop. Located on the Ground Floor of the rebuilt Basil Street block, this one-of-a-kind department had its own entrance and became known as the ultimate shopping destination for men, offering the finest tailoring and cutting-edge fashion. www.harrods.com

CHANGES WITHIN THE OAK-TREE GROUP T

he Oak-Tree Group of Schools, a privatelyowned group of local independent schools in Essex, has recently announced some exciting developments to its leadership teams from September 2020. With two new Heads and the new Group Education Principal extending her role to full time, this promises to be an exciting future as the Group looks to build on experience. Claire Osborn, outgoing Head of Normanhurst School, Group Education Principal and current Chair of the Independent Schools Association, will take on her Group Education Principal role full time from September. This will bring a wider responsibility for Group-wide areas such as overseeing the teaching, learning and staff development. From September, Mrs Osborn will hand over the Normanhurst Headship to Mrs Jacqueline Job. Jacqueline comes to the school with a wealth of leadership experience gained from her five years as Deputy Head of North Bridge House Prep, a mixed 450-pupil school in Camden. Previously, she spent six years as Assistant Vice Principal then Vice Principal of Rosedale College in Hayes and, before that, five years at The City of London Academy, the last four as Assistant Vice Principal. She is looking forward to starting at Normanhurst and has already spent much time in school getting to know the pupils, staff and parents. Jacqueline commented, “Normanhurst is a small school with a big vision. It’s a school where pupils of all abilities, aptitudes and social backgrounds thrive and achieve. I’m honoured to be able to lead the school from September.” Further developments are taking place at

Coopersale Hall School in Epping, where after nearly 10 years as Headmistress, Kaye Lovejoy will be retiring when this term ends. The school is delighted to appoint Miss Moreen Barnard as the next Head of Coopersale Hall School from September 2020. Currently Head of School at Normanhurst, having joined the group in 2014, she has many years’ experience working with pupils from 2½ to 16 and understands the independent sector well. Prior to joining the group, she spent nine years as a class teacher, teacher governor and enrichment coordinator at Uphall Primary School in Ilford. Moreen told us, “I am delighted to be joining Coopersale Hall in September and I am excited to be leading the school to the next stage of its development as we look to extend the school and the excellent education we offer.” Matthew Hagger, Group Managing Principal, is pleased with the forthcoming developments, “This is an opportunity to reshape the leadership teams at two of the schools and also to enhance the Group structure by bringing together such a wealth of experience. We have around 330 staff and 1000 children across the Group and so Claire’s full time addition as Education Principal will provide an enhanced focus on the overall service that we provide. Jacqueline and Moreen are both well-suited to their new schools and I know they will offer inspirational leadership to their respective new school communities.” Normanhurst School is an all-through school, taking pupils from 2½ to 16 in North Chingford. Coopersale Hall School in Epping currently takes pupils from 2½ to 11.

PENSIONS, SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS DURING COVID-19 The recent coronavirus pandemic has caused significant global stock market volatility and many people are worried about the impact on their pension, savings and investments. Keep calm and carry on The worst thing to do is sell investments during a period of volatility, especially if your long-term objectives haven’t changed. If the markets have fallen, panic-selling may often be a natural first reaction to a fall in the value of your fund, but selling now will only crystalise any losses to your portfolio.

Look for opportunities In some situations, this may be a good time to re-balance portfolios, or for some investors to acquire additional investment opportunities while prices are lower. For other investors that hold sizeable investments, or for those concerned about the impact on pension income, we’d urge you not to panic. Your pension and investments should always be seen as long-term commitments.

First steps to plan for retirement If you are concerned about how the current market volatility may affect your plans for later in life, an independent financial adviser can help you work through a personal cash flow forecast in order to evaluate your objectives. It’s important to understand your expenditure first, after which income and investments or pensions can be assessed to see how and if they can meet your expenditure needs. Once we know how and where income will come from, the next steps can be carefully considered. 2 4 J U LY 2 0 2 0

Using your pension Pension freedoms mean that you can drawdown from your pension from the age of 55 (57 from 2028), although there are benefit and tax considerations to bear in mind if you choose to do this. Pensions do not always have to be used as your main source of retirement income and building a strategy between your pension and non-pension savings can result in much more effective planning. The first priority has to be your own income needs in retirement, but other considerations such as income or Inheritance Tax may also need to be considered.

Quantifying your cashflow and managing your tax liabilities is incredibly important

Inheritance Tax After reviewing your income and expenditure needs, mitigating Inheritance Tax is often the next financial objective for many individuals at or in retirement. There are many solutions to consider, that can range from gifting monies away or keeping monies in an Inheritance Tax efficient savings vehicle.

Thinking of others Planning ahead for the care of your loved ones is an important consideration which has come to the front of many people’s minds during the recent pandemic. There are a number of options available to people to help protect themselves and provide for loved ones but it is always important to ensure the correct option is picked.

ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE: SPORTS CAR SUPERIORITY FOR 70 YEARS

British brand. Spanning seven decades and covering some of the company’s most revered sports cars, the Vantage family forms a crucial part of the everevolving Aston Martin story. From the earliest days of the DB2 Vantage to today’s state-of-the-art Vantage sports car, this historic name has become synonymous with pace, power and more than a dash of style.

70 years of Vantage

A

ston Martin this year celebrates the creation of one of its most famous model designations, as the Vantage family of sports cars marks its 70th

anniversary. The name Vantage proudly sits on more than a third of all the sports cars ever made by the luxury 30 june 2020

The word Vantage first appeared in 1950, with the debut of the Aston Martin DB2 with Vantage specification. At the 1951 Earl’s Court Motor Exhibition, an Aston Martin press release said: “On the 1951 Earl’s Court stand will be displayed two Aston Martin DB.II saloons, one fitted with the regular engine and one fitted with the ‘Vantage’ engine, the high speed regularity of which was demonstrated so forcibly at Le Mans this year and last.” The DB4 Vantage made its debut with the start of the DB4 Series IV cars in 1961. Key to this was the ‘Special Series’ engine, featuring three SU HD8 carburettors and revised cylinder heads with bigger

valves and a higher compression ratio. Power was quoted at the time as 266bhp. The more spacious DB4 Series V Vantage in 1962 featured as one of the cars used in the filming of the James Bond film Goldfinger. The car of course is now synonymous with the world’s most famous secret agent and was used in some of the filming as the basis for the film’s ‘gadget’ car. The DB5 Convertible with the Vantage engine is a combination that is rarer still with only eight sports cars out of 123 built, featuring this engine. Genuine originals of the DB5 Vantage and DB5 Vantage Convertible are considered very desirable indeed. The DB6 Vantage in Mk I and Mk II versions, followed the same tried and trusted upgrade formula. The number of original Vantage-engined cars can be counted in the dozens, rather than the hundreds, remaining hugely desirable and jealously guarded by lucky owners around the world. The next Aston Martin Vantage was hailed at its 1977 introduction as “Britain’s first supercar”. It could outrun a Ferrari Daytona in the 0-60 mph sprint, and if pushed to the limit it could record a top speed of 170 mph. The V8 Vantage evolved significantly over the course of its reign spanning three decades. Throughout its build period the Vantage remained the jewel in Aston Martin’s burnished crown. The 1990s saw the Virage-based Vantage – often referred to as the supercharged Vantage. It sports six headlights and boasts massive 362mm diameter ventilated discs and four piston AP Racing callipers at the front:. With 550bhp and 550lb-ft of torque, this was, at the time, the most powerful production power plant in the world. In 1999, the DB7 V12 Vantage made its debut boasting a 5.9-litre, 48 valve, all-alloy, V12 engine delivering 420bhp. From 2000, an acclaimed ‘Touchtronic’ system became available with the last DB7 V12 Vantage built rolling off the Bloxham line in 2003. That same year, the world got its first glimpse of the AMV8 Vantage Concept. In 2005, the production version of the V8 Vantage was unveiled and on the strength of the concept alone, order books were already bulging. Series production began at a rate approaching 3,000 sports car per year. To date, this iteration of Vantage remains the single biggest sales success in the brand’s proud 107-year history.

In 2009, Aston Martin unveiled one of the most iconic and desirable cars yet to join the Vantage club: the V12 Vantage. On the road and mated to a six-speed manual gearbox this means a 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds, and an autobahn blistering top speed of 190 mph. Aston Martin engineers challenged themselves with the V12 Vantage S. Power is hiked to 565bhp and the 0-60 mph time is a ferocious 3.5 seconds. At a top speed of 205 mph, it became the fastest production car Aston Martin had yet offered to the public. A variety of special editions peppered the V12 Vantage production run, although arguably the most significant was the V12 Vantage Zagato. As befits an Aston Martin Zagato these cars are hyper rare. Today’s cutting-edge Vantage two-seater sports car is styled for aerodynamic excellence as well as obvious kerb appeal. The car features a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with a peak power output of 503bhp and a torque peak of 505lbft, mated to a rear-mounted 8-speed automatic gearbox. This endows the current Vantage with a distinctly brisk 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 195 mph. The car was created to deliver a truly exhilarating driving experience. Remarking on the enduring appeal of Vantage as part of the brand’s rich and fascinating heritage, Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO, Dr Andy Palmer said: “Today’s Vantage and Vantage AMR sports cars represent the latest interpretation of what this single, yet incredibly evocative, word means to drivers around the world. As we celebrate 70 years of Vantage in 2020, it allows us to delight in our superb sports car heritage. Vantage has always stood for engineering ambition, thrilling performance and exceptional beauty, and I’m pleased that today’s models more than live up to the standards set by their iconic forebears.” www.astonmartin.com

DAME JUDI DENCH’S MOST FASHIONABLE MOMENTS FROM THE FIFTIES TO TODAY The acTor and BriTish Vogue coVer sTar loVes an inTricaTe coaT on The red carpeT. Words: prudence Wade

A

t 85 years old, Judi Dench has become British Vogue’s oldest cover star. The actor - known for her roles in the James Bond franchise, Shakespeare in Love and more - is on the front cover of the fashion magazine’s June issue. In the accompanying profile, her daughter Finty Williams says: “After the photoshoot, she came back literally thinking she was Beyonce.” This isn’t the first time Dench has made a fashion splash. Not only has she been ruling the stage and the screen since the Fifties, but she’s had some pretty incredible looks along the way. Her style has always been timeless and classic, not slavishly tied to trends. Here are some of her biggest fashion moments.

The FiFTies... nowadays, most of us board flights wearing leggings and hoodies. This wasn’t the case in the 1950s; back in 1959, dench touched down in london in a particularly chic, shaggy coat. of course, this was all topped off by her signature pixie crop - a look the 85-year-old still models today. 3 2 J U LY 2 0 2 0

The sixTies... even though this is a stage costume, we’re still counting it as a huge fashion moment. Back in 1968, dench played sally Bowles in the musical cabaret, and did so in a series of racy outfits befitting the iconic character.

The seVenTies... dench married fellow actor Michael Williams in February 1971. she did so in an outfit perfect for a winter bride, wearing a white coat with a fur hood and a big grin on her face.

The eighTies... dench kept things sleek and elegant for the 1982 Baftas, wearing a black turtleneck outfit which would still very much work on the red carpet today.

The nineTies... When winning the best actress award for playing Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown at the 1998 Baftas, dench showed you can never go wrong with a black velvet evening gown. But her undoubted signature style can be seen in her 1999 oscars outfit, when she won best supporting actress for her role in shakespeare in love. it involved a floaty long dress, a chic coat over the top, and in this instance we have to give a special shout out to her intricate clutch.

6304 JJUUNLEY 2 2 00 22 00

The noughTies... let’s take a moment to appreciate the actor’s blue crushed velvet coat and matching choker, worn to the premiere of iris in 2002 - and hope she still has the jacket in her wardrobe. The noughties was also very much dench’s black phase, but she showed dark colours don’t have to be boring at the 2002 academy awards with a gown featuring delicate detailing around the waist. like the legend that she is, for the premiere of Quantum of solace in 2008, dench bedazzled ‘007’ onto the back of her neck. dench didn’t used to wear a lot of colour, which is what makes the lemon gown worn to the premiere of nine in 2009 such a knockout.

The 2010s... There was a stage when dench would only really be seen wearing black on the red carpet. however, over the past decade or so she’s embraced colour, and is often seen wearing white - for example, the chic outfit for the 2012 premiere of skyfall. The only arbiter of cool we’re interested in, dench wore a black leather biker jacket on The graham norton show in 2014. she layered lots of delicate necklaces together - a jewellery trend which has recently taken over, making her a bon afide style icon. For the 2017 premiere of Victoria and abdul, a film about the friendship between Queen Victoria and her indian servant, dench stepped out in a pale blue outfit with an beautifully embroidered coat.

Spring/Summer 2020 Collection T

he dialogue between man and nature is at the very heart of the Giorgio Armani SS20 campaign, presented in a landscape of burnt colours, rocky surfaces and clear skies. The warm, intense light is shaded by coloured sheets that veil and unveil glimpses of wild nature. Giorgio armani captures its spirit, proposing a new wardrobe in which everything blends together with spontaneity and elegance. Visual references to worlds, atmospheres and cultures overlap, and a new harmony emerges from what appears, on the surface, to be accidental. An echo of colours and materials runs through the collection, sketching out a movement that passes from the density of earthy colours – browns with touches of blue, purplish blue and turquoise, and dark greys - moves through liquid blues, and finally evaporates into ethereal notes of lightest pink and pearly grey. And in this delicate progression, the rich silk becomes tulle, organza, georgette. The chromatic story is a journey of shapes, increasingly lighter and more weightless. The beginning is typical armani, a suit. The look is familiar, but the kimono-style cut of the sleeves, the roundness of the shoulders, the emphasis on the waistline define a new silhouette, one which follows the curves of the body. Blazers are worn with trousers, either fluid or slim-cut. The skirts are long and fluttering; parkas are crafted from organza, and the fil coupÊ processing dematerialises the surfaces of the jackets that closely embrace the bust. Everything is transparent and weightless, even the multiple layers. The overlapping floral prints create duplicate images and mirage-like effects. The long dresses sway like haloes of mist, until they rise in the gentle, polychrome sparkle of the long evening cloak gowns, swathed in embroidered details. The collection is available now at: Giorgio Armani, 37 Sloane Street, Knightsbridge, SW1X 9LP and at www.armani.com

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY FAsHION,

THIS SEASon’S SEXIEST TREnD

Whether it’s sweetheart, asymmetric or square, PRUDeNCe WaDe picks out the coolest necklines of the season.

I

f you want to update your wardrobe in a wearable and easy way, it’s time to play around with interesting necklines. The fashion crowd is currently obsessed with showing off a bit of collarbone, with asymmetric styles, deep Vs and sweetheart cuts all making their mark. The best thing about this trend? It’s super easy to tailor it to the weather, personal preferences and body type. Baring your decolletage might sound racy - or just a bit too chilly - but often these styles are balanced out by covering up more elsewhere, such as teaming a low neck with long sleeves and trousers. Plus, lots of skin on show isn’t a must; there is far more to playing around with necklines than opting for a deep, plunging V. It’s all very much inspired by the wave of Nineties minimalism we’ve seen take over catwalks and Instagram in recent years. It’s not a time to go for bright colours or loud prints, but instead focus on pared back styles in block colours. This way, the interesting neckline will really stand out, while the rest of your outfit is effortless and simple - basically the epitome of French sex appeal - and you don’t need a complete wardrobe overhaul to get the look. To show off a bit more decolletage and play around with interesting necklines this season, try some of these styles...

4 4 J U LY 2 0 2 0

Asymmetric For an edgier take on the trend, experiment with an asymmetric neckline. This essentially means a neckline that isn’t even: maybe it’s high on one side and lower on the other, but all the time showing flashes of collarbone. These kinds of looks work particularly well in streamlined leotards or bodysuits, which look great with mom jeans or a flowing skirt. You don’t even need a specific asymmetric outfit to get the look - all you need to do is place a loose neckline off the shoulder and you’ll embody the perfect amount of nonchalant cool.

v-necks

3

When it comes to interesting necklines, a V shape is probably the most classic on the list. This doesn’t have to mean it’s boring, however. V-necks have become a fast favourite to combine with other trends. For example, fine knits are incredibly chic right now, and they’re perfect for a V-neck top or T-shirt. If this isn’t your style, why not combine a deep V with puffy, milkmaid-style sleeves? No fashion trend exists in a vacuum, which is why it’s fun to play around with a few of your favourites at the same time. Those with larger cup sizes might shy away from V styles - they absolutely shouldn’t though - but if you don’t feel comfortable with a low neckline, you can tailor the V to what suits you best and choose a style that’s cut higher.

Few things look as modern and fresh as a square neckline. It’s not something you see often, which is odd considering how easy it is to wear. You don’t need to style it in any particular way - just chuck it on. As with any of these styles which show off a bit of collarbone, it’s a great opportunity to showcase your jewellery too. Either wear a bold statement necklace or layer lots of delicate chains for maximum impact.

“few things look as modern and fresh as a square neckline”

Sweetheart

4

The sweetheart style is pretty much responsible for our new obsession with interesting necklines. This is all down to New York cool girl brand Khaite and its cult Maddy top - a ribbed style with a sweetheart neckline. The top has proved so popular it constantly sells out, and is loved by models like Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley and Lily Aldridge. Khaite isn’t a cheap brand - the Maddy top costs £920 - but the silhouette has taken off. Sweetheart styles aren’t always seen as the most cutting edge - they can sometimes evoke dodgy images of Eighties outfits or princessy wedding dresses - but thanks to Khaite’s modern take on the look, they’ve been given a minimalist update which has taken fashion by storm. To work this look into your own wardrobe, keep things as pared back and simple as possible, with block colours and sleek silhouettes. J U LY 2 0 2 0 4 5

DARK LIPS

FOR THE SUMMER

asks a make-up artist how to get the vampy look.

PrudEncE WAdE

A

s summer approaches, we tend to put our winter clothes away and bring out our warm weather outfits. The same ethos is often applied to our beauty bags: when the sun comes out, we pack up our dark lipsticks and eyeshadows in favour of brighter colours. However, this doesn’t always have to be the case. While you might associate berry lipsticks with autumn and winter, designers like MaxMara and Rick Owens made a strong case for darker pouts this season. It’s a surprising choice for the spring and summer months, but still totally wearable. It’s a way of experimenting with make-up without having to draw anything wacky on your face, or even learn any new techniques. Admittedly, you don’t want to look like Morticia Addams did your make-up in the middle of summer, which is why we asked Stila’s lead make-up artist Sascha Jackson for her top tips...

PREPARATION

dry skin,” advises Jackson. It’s not like you need fancy new products to get soft, smooth lips, because there are plenty of home remedies which work just as well. The make-up artist has a few favourite DIY methods of her own, saying: “You can use some lip balm and an old toothbrush and gently scrub your lips until super smooth. Or, my personal favourite is making my own home-made lip scrub using coconut oil and brown sugar (if you only have white then that’s fine too). Mix them together in a small pot and work into the lips for a minute or two, then wipe away. Your lips will be super-smooth and soft.” For super-hydrated lips, you might be tempted to use lip balm or oils before applying lipstick, but Jackson warns against this as they “may hinder the performance of your lipstick - so make sure you wipe away any excess product”.

With any type of make-up, it’s important to prep your skin properly so the products glide on seamlessly. The same logic applies to your lips - and priming them is even more important when you’re wearing a bold, statement colour. “First, exfoliate your lips to get rid of any excess

Luckily, applying lipstick is one of the easiest things you can do in the world of make-up - all you need to do is draw the colour onto the shape of your pout.

However, Jackson says: “The bolder colour, the more precise you will need the finish to be” - so you might want to try something different than just swiping on lipstick. She suggests using a lip brush or a small, dense eyeshadow brush: “Load up the brush, then start by lining your lips, as you would a lip liner. Lining first makes sure you have crisp, neat edges. Then, you can then fill in the middle and any gaps - making sure your lips are evenly coated with product.”

iLLAmASqUA AnTimATTER LipSTicK in TURnTABLE, £10 (WAS £20)

FINISHING OFF THE LOOK Jackson calls this trend for darker lips a “welcome change from the usual summery shades of corals and pinks. But wearing a darker, bold lip in the summer months needs adapting from how you would perhaps wear it in the winter season, to make sure it keeps within the summer vibe.” This means you need to think about how your dark lip pairs with the rest of your make-up. Instead of going for a smokey eye, Jackson says: “I love pairing a dark berry lip with a contrasting pop of colour on the eyes. Nothing bold or crazy - just a bright eyeliner or a wash of a pastel shade will do. Think of wearing a dark berry lip with a yellow eyeliner, or pairing a deep burgundy brown lip with a wash of turquoise shadow.” She also recommends using bright and summery make-up for your skin. “Keep everything light and glowy,” Jackson suggests. “Try using an illuminating primer under your foundation, use highlighter on the cheekbones and high points of the face, and try to keep textures to a cream formula, as opposed to matte powder. This will make sure it sets off against the darker lip and ties in nicely with summer fashion and trends.”

AvoIDInG BRonzER MISTAKES

make-up artists share their top tips for a naturally sun-kissed look. KaTie WRigHT gets her glow on.

W

ith holidays to sunny, farflung destinations pretty much impossible right now, if you want a tan this summer, the old ‘fake it till you make it’ adage is more relevant than ever. Bronzer is the easiest option if you want to get a gorgeous glow in no time, but it’s still possible to go 5 2 J U LY 2 0 2 0

overboard, pick the wrong shade or end up with uneven patches. That’s why we’ve enlisted a pair of pro make-up artists to school us on how to create a subtle, sun-kissed look with either cream or powder formulas. Here are five common mistakes - and how to avoid them, plus our pick of the best bronzing products.

1. not prepping skin properly “Skincare is a tool to make your skin beautiful and healthy and glowing,” says Julia Carta, celebrity make-up artist on behalf of Cetraben. “Using skincare the right way, you’re going to get a beautiful canvas.” She recommends moisturising with Cetraben Natural Oatmeal Moisturising Cream (£6.99 - was £8.99, Boots), which will create a smooth, hydrated base, whether you’re using cream or powder bronzer.

2. Choosing the wrong shade “Making sure you get the right bronzer for your skin tone is so important, because getting the wrong one can either make you look orange, ashy or like there’s no make-up on you,” says Bobbi Brown make-up artist Zara Findlay. How do you find the perfect shade? “Your bronzer should be the same undertone as your skin - cool, warm, olive, or neutral - and should be the natural colour your skin tans,” Findlay says. “The easiest way to see if it is the perfect colour for you, is to place the bronzer against your chest and see if the bronzer lifts and compliments your skin tone.”

“Making sure you get the right bronzer for your skin tone is so important”

3. Incorrect placement “After you prep properly, then you can start to look where your placement goes,” says Carta. “With bronzer, it’s across the cheekbones and across the bridge of the nose where the sun would hit you naturally.” You can also use matte bronzer to gently contour your face. “So if you’ve got a wide face, you want to slim it down by putting bronzer in certain areas,” Carta says. “Use the same placements that you would do with contouring technique, which is a ‘C’ shape around the temples.”

4. only using one type of bronzer Bronzers usually fall into one of two camps: matte or shimmer. Carta recommends combining the two to create a three-dimensional look. “Use the matte where you put your contouring powder, then where you want your highlights, use the the shimmery one. “That’s a clever way of doing it - it’s what I do a lot when I’m working on celebrities, because it gives them that beautiful subtle glow.”

SO WHAT IS A RESIN BOUND AGGREGATE?

Everywhere I look I keep seeing these beautiful drives

R

esin Bound aggregate has been around for about 20 years but it’s only in the last 5 years that it has really matured into the wonderful product we have today. The basic concept is that we take 4 bags of natural stone aggregate and put it into an upright mixer which is like a huge dough maker. Then separately we mix the resin and the hardener which is then added to the aggregate. After a couple of minutes, the beautiful mixture oozes out like think toffee. Ready to be raked and trowelled by our craftsmen. This fine product can be laid on existing concrete if there is existing drainage but it really comes into its own if laid on a porous tarmac because then it is totally permeable to the extent that you can tip a bucket of water and it will instantly disappear, making it perfect for cleaning and washing down. It is also extremely hardwearing as the resin hardens like rock and UV resistant which allows us to offer a

Adding Value To Your Home

From ambitious building projects to timely tidying up, luKe rix-standing looks at how to boost the value of your property.

K

een to add value to your home? Whether you’ve just moved into a decrepit bedsit, or have lived in a mansion for years of domestic bliss, there is still plenty of mileage to adding value to your property. Doing so could help improve your own quality of life while you’re still in the property (if buyers find something appealing, odds are you might too), and keep you well placed on the property ladder, regardless of whether you’re currently looking to sell. From five-year plans to on-the-day dust-ups, here’s seven ways to add value to your home...

Loft conversion Perhaps the gold standard of home improvements, loft conversions are not for the faint of heart, but can come with major domestic and financial rewards if done well. Adding square footage is a guaranteed value-boost, while the market fixation with number of bedrooms means that adding one can practically ensure a hefty payday when it comes to selling. “The average loft conversion costs around £40,000,” says Chris Smith, regional director at estate agents Yopa, “but can increase your property value by an estimated 21%. They’re usually more of a long-term strategy, so you might not see all the 6 0 J u lY 2 0 2 0

money back if you sell immediately.” Loft conversions are not cheap - and not suitable for every property of course - but they often perfectly prove that old adage, that you have to spend money to make money.

Brush up on kerb appeal First impressions matter, and putting your best foot forward is key to getting customers through the door. “We estimate that simply by improving your

“The average loft conversion costs around £40,000”

your property’s ‘kerb appeal’, with a freshly painted exterior, clean windows, a tidy driveway and a new front door, can boost the value of a property by up to 10%,” says Smith. “The outside of your property is the first thing potential buyers will see, both when browsing online and in person at a viewing.” On modern properties, buyers may probably expect double glazing - a savvy way to save on your energy bill in the meantime - along with up-to-date security and draught-proofing.

Go for open-plan living Open-plan living has been in vogue for some years now, and it’s clearly not going anywhere anytime soon. Most modern house-hunters are looking for spaces that are practical and adaptable, and it seems distinctly old-fashioned to cook your food in one room and then have to transport it to another to eat it. Open-plan living spaces don’t have to be giant, or rectangular - you’re looking to create areas that are connected but distinct. Consider sliding doors or curtains that can pull back during the day, waist or shoulder-high partitions, or doorway-like arches that demarcate your space. These are the golden rules of open-plan living: separation without isolation; continuity without uniformity.

Refurbish the kitchen A recent report by Norton Finance mapped out the most expensive home improvements performed by homeowners in their first year in a new property, and kitchen renovation ranked second only to furniture. The centrepiece to so many homes, it’s no surprise that the kitchen commands so much attention both before and after a sale, and a welldesigned room can easily pull in extra thousands. “If your budget can only stretch to renovating one room, that room should be the kitchen,” says Smith. “You can cut costs by painting cupboard doors yourself and adding new, fashionable handles.”

Add a conservatory The stars have to align somewhat for conservatories to be sensible investments, but if the cap fits, they can enhance a property with ease. Aside from the necessary financial clout, homeowners will need to ensure proper planning permission, while those with smaller gardens might want to think twice before sacrificing valuable yard space. Though often associated with summer, conservatories really earn their keep during the winter months, when they provide a portal to the outside world, free from the cold, damp and dark. “The addition of a traditional British conservatory typically costs around £5,000,” says Smith, “and can increase the value of a property by around 10% when done well. To add real value, make sure your conservatory is fully glazed and blends in with the style of the rest of the property.”

Redecorate Consider any second-hand shop - regardless of what it sells - and consider the price difference between products marked ‘used’, and products marked ‘like new’. This one’s a no-brainer, and just a fresh lick of paint can make pokey rooms immediately more marketable. Your house isn’t new - but it’s new to your potential buyers, and you’ll be doing your bank balance a favour if you can make it look that way from the moment they cross the threshold.

Add an extra bathroom As with bedrooms, the number of bathrooms appears like a ranking next to your property, and it’s a crucial integer in the valuation equation. Broom closet, pantry, cupboard under the stairs - a small downstairs loo doesn’t take much, and it can be a delightfully canny way to carve profit out of otherwise wasted space. “You can add up to 5% value to your property by adding a second bathroom,” says Smith. “An average bathroom costs £4,500, and according to NAEA Propertymark, 70% of estate agents say an additional loo helps to sell a house.”

“Open-plan living has been in vogue for some years now, and it’s clearly not going anywhere anytime soon. Most modern house-hunters are looking for spaces that are practical and adaptable”

Top considerations for an indoor pool

S

o, you’ve decided on an indoor swimming pool, what now? There are many questions to be answered and decisions to be made along the way, attention to detail and precise planning is crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house. Origin have the experience, knowledge and delivery expertise to bring your vision to life. They work with you from concept to completion and manage the entire process, taking you through every step.

For anyone wanting to begin the process, here are the answers to key questions to help with the decision making.

Are you interested in a stand alone indoor pool house or a pool house extension to your home? This is the biggest decision you’ll need to make when it comes to your indoor swimming pool as placement and location play a crucial role in the success of a project. There are advantages and disadvantages to both stand alone pool houses and extensions, a few of which have been listed below: Stand alone pool house advantages: • A space to escape away from the home • Typically most cost efficient • Can be a focal point of a garden design • Can be easy to build under permitted development rights • Reduced disruption to your household over the course of the build • Separate social hub

6 2 J U LY 2 0 2 0

“There are advantages and disadvantages to both stand alone pool houses and extensions”

Disadvantages: • Distance from the house, notably in poor weather Pool house extension advantages: • Your indoor pool becomes another recreational area of your main home • Ease of access when the weather is poor • Convenient way to incorporate swimming into your everyday life and daily routine Disadvantages: • Typically increased cost due to matching existing materials and additional adjoining work to the existing property • More advanced dehumidification systems are essential • More disruption during construction • Usually requires a formal planning application Will you need planning permission? For a pool house in your garden it’s more than likely that you won’t need planning permission. In the majority of cases as long as the pool building is freestanding, complies to the permitted development design criteria and your permitted development rights are intact - you won’t need it. Almost without exception, a pool house extension to your home will need planning permission. Origin have a wealth of experience in gaining planning approval for indoor pools in listed buildings, areas of outstanding natural beauty, conservation areas and they also manage the whole process for you so, no need to panic! Do you start with an architect? Simply put, no because Origin do it all. We are fortunate in the UK to have some of the best architects in the world but specialist architects with working knowledge of an indoor pool environment are very rare. Architects are extremely well versed with domestic construction details, but unfortunately an indoor pool is very different. An architect can provide you with an outline design for an indoor pool but this may be an unnecessary expense as many don’t have the knowledge or insurances needed to take that design further. However, Origin’s team of experts provide initial design sketches and a budgetary proposal free of charge in their feasibility studies.

important part of a pool design. They retain heat, reduce running costs and some provide a level of safety, making them a necessity rather than an option. When thinking about adding different features of pool design to your indoor swimming pool, it’s important to remember your motivation for the pool in the first place. Are you looking to create a place of wellness and relaxation? Your own fitness centre or a new social hub for friends and family? The additions of gyms and bar areas make great use of the space and allow you to take your pool house to the next level, these elements will transform the space into the social hub of your home but keep in mind, it will increase the size of the building and hence drive costs up. Items such as a corner spa are a fantastic addition, whether used relaxing after a hard days work or after an invigorating swim, they add an extra dimension to the pool complex. When adding a sauna or a steam room it is important to remember these typically lead to a larger building where circulation space is also key. Origin’s experts can discuss your requirements, guide you through the options and produce a fully costed proposal and design for you allowing you to undertake the ultimate home improvement so you can finally achieve the perfect work life balance. After all, staying in is the new going out.

Which aspects of pool design have the biggest impact on cost? Size is an obvious one as setting your heart on a 25m pool would be a significant investment. The most popular size for an indoor pool is between 8m to 12m, if you’re an avid swimmer and wanting an indoor swimming pool for practice and training, there are some excellent counter current swim devices available making the size of the pool less important. Buying a swimming pool cover is one of the bigger investments you’ll make throughout the whole process but they’re well worth it as they’re an J U LY 2 0 2 0 6 3

CREATE YOUR DREAM DESIGN

Essential tips to achieve your dream kitchen from Urban Myth

O

ver the last few months many of us have spent more time at home and more time in the kitchen and if you were thinking about having a new kitchen before lockdown began, perhaps, this is the perfect opportunity to create that dream design. Urban Myth have an extensive showroom and we are open for one-to-one appointments. Our recently updated website is also full of inspiration and case studies as well as more information about the company and our service. Every customer is unique and therefore every kitchen is different, but here are our four essential tips to consider no matter what your budget may be. Plan your layout When designing your new kitchen it’s a good idea to consider “the work triangle”, the shape created by the 3 essential kitchen workstations; the fridge/freezer, the hob and the sink. You might consider incorporating the hob or sink in a kitchen island to achieve the shortest distance between these areas. Principally you need to ensure the layout works for you and your family. You can avoid extra building costs by checking where your plumbing is situated and make sure that your new design does not move too far away from this location. Choose a lasting finish Remember, you probably won’t update your kitchen again for another 15 or 20 years so you need to ensure the design does not date too soon. Choosing a bright colour for your cabinets can seriously affect

6 4 J U LY 2 0 2 0

its lifespan – you may remember the fashion for red in the 80’s. By adding colour interest in a more subtle way you can update these features without needing a whole new kitchen. A Coloured backsplash, feature wall or contrasting island unit are all excellent examples of way to achieve this. Bright ideas Lighting can totally transform a space and can often be something overlooked with a renovation. Advances in lighting technology now allow for some stunning effects, for example, incorporating lighting below an island unit will make it appear to float and it’s always a good idea to place lighting over food preparation areas. Separating the lighting circuits in open plan areas and adding a dimmable function can define the dining zone and creates a pleasant ambience. Get your timing right A new kitchen is a big project, one that you need to get right. Allow time to get the design exactly how you want, don’t wait until two weeks before you need to have the kitchen fitted before making a showroom visit. A latest survey by the KBSA revealed that it can take up to 3 months to design your kitchen. Talk to your builders if you are extending or building a new property, they’ll need to know in good time the details of your kitchen plan and the locations of the services required to make it work. We believe that great design is achievable on any budget.

Gardens of the Future

tougher plants, smaller plots and more communal spaces may all form the gardens of the future. hannah stePhenson finds out more.

G

ardens are extremely important for both physical and mental wellbeing - which has become increasingly apparent this year. But what are they going to look like in the future? “We are finally starting to re-evaluate how we spend our leisure time and appreciate the real benefits, both mental and physical, that access to the outside world provides,” says award-winning designer Joe Perkins (joeperkinsdesign.com), who won a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show last year with his Facebook-sponsored garden Beyond The Screen. “These factors, along with our changing climate and the need to protect and support wildlife, will have greater significance for designers when it comes to planning gardens, and means that gardens could look radically different in 10 or 20 years’ time.” Here, Perkins shares more thoughts on what gardens of the future could look like... Will gardens be smaller? “As the price and pressure on available land becomes greater and we extend our interior living spaces, gardens will be smaller. We will see a mixture of balcony and roof space with limited outdoor areas at ground level.” What about lawns? “Manicured lawns will become, for the most part, a thing of the past. Essentially a green desert for

6 6 J u lY 2 0 2 0

wildlife, they have little benefit and they will be replaced with either wildflower versions or removed and replaced with productive areas or larger flower and shrub borders. “Social media is flooded with nature appreciation at the moment, so I hope that a more relaxed approach to gardens will start to emerge, with the focus less on control of wildlife and more in support of it.” How will technology play a part? “Walls and boundaries will become clothed with plants and we could see advanced hydroponics being used to transform our spaces into hi-tech allotments, growing fruit and veg very productively with a minimum requirement for space, water and nutrients. We could even turn our roofs green to help improve air quality, as well as insulate our homes.” Will outdoor socialising change? “Socialising has always been a priority in the garden, so I believe gardens of the future will incorporate more permanent places that we will use year-round. No more dragging the garden furniture out of the shed and dusting off the umbrella; we will have covered, heated areas for eating, entertaining and even working, now that we have all proved that we can do this from home. “Practically, these areas will allow us to use make the most of the changing climate too, enabling us to escape the downpours and provide shade through the hotter dry spells.” Will plant choices change? “Our plant choices will need to change and we will need to select varieties that are more resilient to extreme weathers, choosing plants that cope with high winds and flooding followed by long periods

“These factors, along with our changing climate and the need to protect and support wildlife, will have greater significance for designers when it comes to planning gardens, and means that gardens could look radically different in 10 or 20 years’ time”

of hot dry weather. “Southern France, northern Italy and either side of the Pyrenees can provide us with inspiration and many of the plants that thrive there are familiar to us already. Iris pallida, agapanthus, many of the herbs, as well as tough characters like acanthus and cistus will work well. “Some from further south, such as the European chain fern (Woodwardia radicans) and even the more exotic palms such as Phoenix canariensis will start to migrate northwards. We could even see abutilon, hibiscus or Prunus dulcis (almond) in drier parts of the UK such as East Anglia.” What will be the major emphasis? “Planting for pollinators is crucial, as we all know, but will become more so as the growth cycle of plants becomes longer. Higher average temperatures will mean earlier activity from animals such as the solitary bee. “Providing food sources throughout the year for these creatures is something we should be thinking about as gardeners and designers.”

“Planting for pollinators is crucial, as we all know, but will become more so as the growth cycle of plants becomes longer. Higher average temperatures will mean earlier activity from animals such as the solitary bee”

Could smaller trees gain popularity? “Trees have a vital role in mitigating flooding, alleviating rising temperatures, cleaning the air and preventing soil erosion and yet few people would contemplate planting one in their garden, let alone on their balcony. “Acer palmatum, Amelanchier lamarckii, Malus domestica are all varieties that can be grown in pots and have almost year-round interest with blossom, fruit and winter colour. “We need to get behind creating urban forests. Think of the trees of Singapore that cloak the sides of skyscrapers. There are many small trees we can plant in our gardens which contribute to this urban forest: Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’, Malus toringo, Stewartia monodelphato.” What about communal gardens? “I would hope we would have greater access to larger areas of communal gardens or landscapes, areas with diverse habitat and productive gardens, accessible for our enjoyment and wellbeing, especially when our collective mental and physical health is under threat, but which also provide critical homes for wildlife.”

OUTDOOR LIVING OUTSIDE ILLUMINATIONS

To decorate your outside space, start with festoon lights, hang them as a single string or double up for added illumination, position them over outdoor seating to be enjoyed on warmer days. Then, it’s time to think about low-level lighting, place spotlights at ground level to illuminate shrubbery and trees, giving an instant wow-factor to the space. Finally add finishing touches such as wall lights near the door, which’ll be very practical once the sun has set and for an extra decorative touch place a pair of garden lanterns near the door. www.lights4fun.co.uk
