TATE MODERN PRESENTS ANDy wARHOL

A

until 15 november 2020. a new look at the extraordinary life and work of the pop art superstar

ndy Warhol (1928–87) was one of the most recognisable artists of the late 20th century, yet his life and work continue to fascinate and be interpreted anew. A shy, gay man from a religious, migrant, low income household, he forged his own distinct path to emerge as the epitome of the pop art movement. This major new exhibition at Tate Modern – the first at the gallery for almost 20 years – offers visitors a rare personal insight into how Warhol and his work marked a period of cultural transformation. Drawing upon recent scholarship, it will provide a new lens through which to view this American icon. Featuring over 100 works from across his remarkable career, the show will shed light on how Warhol’s experiences helped shape his unique take on 20th century culture, positioning him within the shifting creative and political landscape in which he worked. While he is best known for his iconic paintings of Coca-Cola bottles and Marilyn Monroe that held up a mirror to American culture, the exhibition will emphasise recurring themes around desire, identity and belief that emerge from Warhol’s biography. Key works from the pop period, such as Marilyn Diptych 1962, Elvis I and II 1963/1964 and Race Riot 1964, will be examined in relation to contemporary issues around American culture and politics, while Warhol’s limitless ambition to push the boundaries of media will be represented via his famous Screen Tests 1964–6 and a recreation of the psychedelic multimedia environment of Exploding Plastic Inevitable 1966. Visitors will also be able to experience Warhol’s floating Silver Clouds 1966 installation, initially meant to signal his ‘retirement’ from painting in favour of moviemaking. He famously stated that ‘good business is the best art’: the exhibition will look at how Warhol’s forays into publishing and TV, as well as his interest in club culture.

10 August 2020

The exhibition will emphasise his skill as a painter and colourist with a room dedicated to the largest grouping of his 1975 Ladies and Gentlemen series ever shown in the UK. These striking portraits depict figures from New York’s transgender community, including iconic performer and activist, Marsha ‘Pay it no mind’ Johnson - a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Warhol’s final works of the 80s, such as the poignant Sixty Last Suppers 1986 – on view at Tate Modern for the first time in this country – will be considered in relation to the artist’s untimely death as well as the unfolding HIV/AIDS epidemic, which ultimately went on to impact the lives of many in his close circle. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, as well as an extensive programme of public talks and film screenings with exclusive new merchandise collections in the gallery shops. THE ART OF BuyING ART

T

hanks to the Lockdown, it was not uncommon for us all to be stuck at home and left, literally, staring at the walls. As such, it was a good time to revisit the items that we’ve put on those walls and whether they still give us pleasure. Alison Phillipson - who specialises in sourcing contemporary art for private and corporate clients - comments: “We can all get pretty immune to what we’ve got on our walls. Family photographs and heirlooms will always have a special resonance, but often the prints or paintings that we bought maybe many years ago have perhaps lost their charm. Having reproductions of work by great masters - whether they’re Pissarro or Picasso - is fine, but personally I find new work by artists who are active

12 August 2020

“My role is to talk through what people are looking for: is it a painting, sculpture or other medium?”

today is fantastically exciting to engage with. “And certainly, if you’re thinking of refreshing the visual landscape of your home there has never been a better time to buy contemporary art. There is a wonderful group of talented young artists producing stunning work at accessible prices.” Of course, contemporary art can be an intimidating part of the art world with which to engage. The bad press it often gets overlooks some of the tremendous work that is being done. When setting up Phillipson Fine Art, eleven years ago, Alison appreciated both this challenge and also the opportunity it presented. “It’s not uncommon for us to help people who have been looking to invest in contemporary art for a long time but just hadn’t been able to connect with the right work. My role is to talk through what people are looking for: is it a painting, sculpture or other medium? And also to consider the space for which it is intended. “That can entail the interior of someone’s home. There’s no point in being precious about that dynamic: for a piece of art to truly work it has to be in a setting which shows it to its best advantage. You wouldn’t hang a 5ft-high Rothko in a 16th century cottage with 6ft ceiling heights.” Phillipson has a First-Class honours degree

in Fine Art and History of Art and an MA in Contemporary Art Theory, but it is her love of contemporary fine art that shines through when she talks about connecting clients to artists. “It’s fascinating to watch an artist develop and follow them on that journey. Yes, some of my clients have made gains on the art that they have bought through me, but the common denominator amongst them all is that they love the pieces they buy and value the connection with the artist who has created that work.” This combination of art expertise and an understanding of what clients are looking for is at the heart of what Phillipson Fine Art does. “We have some clients who we may only ever source one piece, and others who are assiduous collectors. Part of the enjoyment of what I do is

the details Phillipson Fine Art +44 (0)7767 677 677 alison@phillipsonfineart.co.uk phillipsonfineart.co.uk

working with a wide range of people whose only connection is their interest in contemporary art.” Throughout the process great care and diligence is taken to match a client’s personal tastes, their requirements and, of course, their budget: “We’ve helped clients source works from £500 to over £100,000,” Phillipson reports, “and also have commissioned pieces from specific artists. “Our approach to the purchase and commissioning of fine art is to create a very personal dialogue that is always bespoke, discreet and sensitive to our client’s aspirations and tastes.” She works with exceptional artists and will purchase either direct from an artist or from a gallery. “It is enormously satisfying to bring things of beauty into people’s lives and also help artists develop their careers,” she reflects. So, who are some of the artists that she finds most exciting at present? “That’s like having to say who your favourite child is,” she laughs. “I would have to mention the sculptor James Capper and the painter Masaki Yada whom I think are both tremendous talents. I shall now wait for the ‘what-about-me?’ emails from all the others I know!” So if the art on your wall began to pall during Lockdown, it might be an idea to give Alison a call and start investigating the vibrant world of contemporary art.

LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL ANNOuNCES EXCITING PROGRAMME OF PROJECTS 12-20 september 2020

T

he 18th edition of London Design Festival returns to the capital this autumn as a symbol of London’s determination to maintain its creative and cultural leadership. Since its inception in 2003, London Design Festival has played a key role in bringing together the greatest thinkers, practitioners, retailers and educators to celebrate and promote design annually across the capital, and to put a spotlight on London’s creative brilliance. London has the largest creative economy of any city in the world, and its design reputation is internationally renowned. One in six people in London work in the creative industries and it has been the fastest growing sector of the economy in recent years, but the effects and impact of the pandemic has disproportionately affected the creative industries, causing a catastrophic setback to the sector. Following a number of cancellations and closures, the Festival this September will provide a platform for the design community to showcase work at a time when it is needed more than ever, helping to stimulate the creative economy and support young and emerging designers as well as more established names. While international travel continues to be affected, this year’s Festival will have a strong

14 August 2020

local focus and will be a Festival for Londoners. In addition to Landmark Projects and Festival Commissions, Partner events across the Design Districts will enable visitors to walk between shows and discover something new. Physical installations will take place alongside virtual exhibitions, and a digital edition of the Global Design Forum will bring the latest design thinking to a global audience and allow the widest possible access to creative content. This year will also see the introduction of a new digital portal for freelancers to promote their work across the Festival’s platforms. London Design Festival Director, Ben Evans CBE says, “The show must go on. Showcasing is essential for the sector to survive and this year, more than ever, we are determined to offer every opportunity for designers to be seen and heard.” London Design Festival has since earned the reputation as a key calendar moment of London’s autumn creative season, alongside London Fashion Week, Frieze Art Fair and the London Film Festival, attracting the greatest thinkers, practitioners, retailers and educators to the capital, in a citywide celebration. www.londondesignfestival.com #LDF20 Instagram: L_D_F_official Twitter: L_D_F Facebook: LondonDesignFestival

T

he National Trust has come a long way since it was founded by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley in 1895. The founders believed that nature, beauty and history are for everyone and so set up the Trust to look after the nation’s coastline, historic sites, countryside and green spaces. Octavia Hill, a radical social reformer and cultural philanthropist, saw the preservation of open spaces as crucial to improving the lives of the urban poor. Their aim was not only to save important sites, but to look after them for everyone to enjoy in the years to come. From this trio of environmental pioneers, the National Trust was created. Initially, one hundred people paid 10 shillings each to get the ball rolling forming the National Trust into an independent Charity. And their original values are still at the heart of everything the charity does 125 years later. The National Trust welcomed more than 27.9million visitors over 2018/19. Vast coastlines,

The National Trust’s first house was Alfriston Clergy House in East Sussex, a dilapidated medieval meeting house, acquired in 1896. The National Trust’s historic houses and stunning landscapes have also provided backdrops to some unforgettable moments on the small and silver screen from Harry Potter to Poldark and from Tarzan to Wolf Hall, via Game of Thrones. Stourhead House in Wiltshire was the inspiration for Lady Penelope’s residence in the original Thunderbirds puppet series in the 1960s. And you don’t need to leave the bustling, lively streets of London either. With thriving wetlands to sprawling estates, intimate spaces and modernist masterpieces, London has it all including Morden Hall Park, Ham House and Garden, 575 Wandsworth Road, Fenton House and 2 Willow Road in Hampstead, Carlyle’s House in Chelsea, Sutton House and Breaker’s Yard in Hackney and the last remaining galleried Inn in London - The George, built in 1677. It also happens to be my 25th year as President of this great British institution which, with your valuable support, continues to play a vital role in our national life. When our three founders established their new organisation it would surely have seemed impossible to them, or indeed anyone else, that a membership of millions of people would one day own and support 250,000 hectares of farmland, 780 miles of coastline and more than 500 historic properties, together with glorious gardens and spectacular Nature reserves. “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to those pioneers and to everyone whose support over the years. Your membership is much more than a pass to beautiful places: every penny you spend helps keep these places alive and special for the future, and open to all. The global spread of coronavirus is challenging society in a way that we have not experienced for

generations and as a direct impact it has of course, necessitated the temporary closure of the National Trust’s properties, parks and gardens too. While this was undoubtedly a great shame, I know the anniversary will not be overlooked and I shall do whatever I can to play my part in celebrating this important milestone – however remotely. I can only say how enormously privileged I am to have watched this remarkable institution grow over the last 25 years and hope you will look forward, as much as I do, to seeing the next chapter unfold” The National Trust reopened more than 130 gardens and parklands last month.. To ensure the safety of their visitors, staff, volunteers and local communities, they have reduced the number of people they can welcome at one time and you’ll need to book your visit in advance. Last year over 65,000 volunteers devoted in excess of 4.8 million hours of their time to support The National Trust and thanks to the generosity of their supporters they received almost £97.8 million in fundraised income during 2018/19. AVOID BEING A VICTIM

It’s not only holidaymakers who enjoy good weather – it’s also house burglars’ favourite time of year, says Ed Foster, Insurance Executive at Scrutton Bland

A

s lockdown starts to ease and many of us start to go back to work or even get away on holiday, it’s worth remembering that summer is traditionally a peak time for house burglaries. Open windows and doors left unlocked as homeowners head out on day trips, or into their back gardens or hold a BBQ are all irresistible temptations for thieves. Burglars are renowned opportunists and will often break into properties in broad daylight if they think the rewards are there for the taking. However there is good news: statistically the number of household burglaries in the UK is falling. The lower value of used electrical goods is reducing the demand for cheap second-hand items, and the increased profits to be had from cybercrime are now detracting thieves from the more ‘traditional’ offences such as breaking and entering. Burglary is still an issue in many residential areas and can be devastating for victims, so how can you avoid being a victim? Firstly, most house burglaries in urban areas are committed by opportunists. Rural areas are more likely to attract a planned approach. No one house type is more at risk than another, all are fair game to a burglar. Secondly, there are plenty of things that can be done to deter a burglar: • Physical security such as branded locks on all external doors, quality window locks etc. Don’t 22 AUGUST 2020

forget the garage, shed and other buildings outside. Good fencing and some prickly plants can also deter intruders. • Lighting is important, both externally and internally. This can range from detector controlled external security lights to internal lights which can be reprogrammed using timing devices or operated remotely via an App. Other devices can be operated in the same way, for example televisions and radios can be turned on, giving the impression that the house is occupied. • CCTV is now common in many properties, but do some research first or seek advice from a professional. Wireless cctv systems are becoming ever more sophisticated, such as the Ring system (from Amazon) or Nest (owned by Google), which link video doorbells and livestream footage to your phone. Thirdly, fit a burglar alarm. Homes with a professionally installed and maintained alarm system are much less likely to be broken into than those without one, but it’s wise to use a reputable installation company and get at least two quotes. They will give you advice on what equipment you will need to protect your property, the cost of installation and any ongoing maintenance charges after the first year warranty expires. Maintenance is desirable but not required, however your insurance company may insist that an annual maintenance agreement is in place.

DEVELOPMENTS & ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE We talk to Matthew Hagger, Group Principal of the Oak-Tree Schools, who answers some questions about academic success, school developments life in general within the Group.

T

he Oak-Tree Group consists of Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall School in Epping, Normanhurst School in North Chingford and Oaklands School in Loughton. Q: How do your schools perform academically? A: This has been such a successful year academically despite the current circumstances, and most of our pupils were spoilt for choice when it came to receiving offers for their next schools. At Oaklands and Coopersale Hall, both independent preparatory schools, we had many offers made to our Year 6

24 AUGUST 2020

pupils for a wide variety of selective and non-selective senior schools. This year has also seen the trend continue for more pupils to transfer from Oaklands or Coopersale Hall to Braeside or Normanhurst at 11+ to continue their education within the Group. Our Braeside and Normanhurst Year 11s were also incredibly successful this year and received an impressive number of offers to independent and state Sixth Forms, as well as to many local colleges. We work closely with parents to ensure a smooth transition to the next stage of each child’s education.

Q: Will there be any changes within the Group from the new academic year in September? A: It has been a very busy time at the Oak-Tree Group, with lots of exciting developments coming soon! We have recently appointed two new Heads, Mrs Jacqueline Job at Normanhurst and Miss Moreen Barnard at Coopersale Hall, both who begin their positions at the start of the new academic year. Mrs Claire Osborn has been Normanhurst Head for 10 years and will become our new Group Education Principal. At Braeside, the juniors and seniors have historically been accommodated in different buildings a mile apart. For the first time from September, they will come together into one school on the High Road. For the first time in Braeside’s history, this will create a seamless all-through school on one site for children from 2½ to 16. Q: Are there any building plans for this summer? A: A lot of work is taking place at Braeside to prepare for the move, including the refurbishment of classrooms and development of a dedicated Early Years area. At Coopersale Hall, there is ongoing work to update the recently acquired adjoining cottage and garden to introduce new classrooms to the

already spacious school. Both Oaklands and Normanhurst are benefiting from a number of general refurbishments and internal redecoration. Q: What are the benefits of a group of schools? A: Collectively, all four schools have around 1000 pupils and over 300 members of staff. This strength in numbers ensures that resources are readily available to continually enhance the education and provide additional opportunities for academic excellence. We hold regular combined events such as the Year 3 overnight camp, Group Art Exhibitions, Oak-Tree Music Festival, residential trips, and sporting tournaments. These offer excellent opportunities for the pupils and help to bring the schools together. Q: How can prospective families see your school in more detail? A: Although our official Open Events run in October and March each year, with our next events in early October, prospective families are also welcome to arrange a private tour with the Headmistress at any time. We have new, virtual tours on the school websites as well as a wealth of information on day to day school life, curriculum information and much more.

UBER LAUNCHES RIVER BOAT SERVICE in partnership with Thames Clippers

L

ondon’s black taxis or ‘a black cab’ or affectionately the ‘London Cabbie’ have and always will be part of what makes our capital so special to residents, commuters and tourists alike. They were already equipped to deal with Covid 19 having a glass partition separating the driver from passengers. And the cabbies expert ‘Knowledge’ of London’s roads and little back streets holds no bounds. For something different, Uber is launching a London commuter boat service in partnership with Thames Clippers. Rebranded Uber Boat, the 20-strong fleet will cover trips up and down the River Thames from Putney to Woolwich from 23 piers across London. The service will allow Uber users to book a river journey through the app and board using a QR code on their phone. Uber Boat will be following all possible hygiene and social distancing rules, including reduced capacity and that passengers must wear face masks in line with Transport for London (TfL) guidance. The San Francisco company has also confirmed that it will be charging passengers the same price for booking a boat as it does for their cabs. Uber has already got bikes and food deliveries covered although their taxis are grounded as they await a London licence to be re-issued. Last year it added London Tube and bus

updates to the app. Uber could be on a mission to be the one-stop app for all your transport needs? Uber’s regional general manager for northern and eastern Europe – Jamie Heywood, said in a statemen: “Many Londoners are looking for new ways to travel around the city, particularly when they start commuting back to work. Later this summer we will launch the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers in London as a means for people to arrange travel on the river and road, all through the Uber app.” Delighted by the partnership, Thames Clipper’s co-founder and CEO Sean Collins further remarked, “The new partnership sees Thames Clippers and Uber, who both pride themselves on safety, reliability, and comfort, come together. It will allow us to link the two travel modes of river and road, providing Londoners and visitors with even more options to commute, visit, explore and enjoy our city by river.” Thames Clippers tickets will still be available to buy elsewhere and the boats remain part of the Oyster network. Over 4.3 million people use the River Thames for commuting and travelling each year, and over 40 per cent of passengers have said they will increase their use of Thames Clippers in the future as an alternative means of getting around the city.

I

f a worldwide pandemic has taught us one thing, it’s to never take anything for granted. Spending time with family, exploring the world and making memories… life is about filling our hearts not our bank accounts. Now that travel is accessible, and after so much time in the same small bubble, a holiday is just what some of us need. Whether you choose a UK staycation, a trip to Europe or even further afield, be sure to do your research before booking and speak to a trusted and experienced travel agency. To give you the lowdown, we spoke to our friends at Winged Boots, a personalised management agency that specialises in luxury travel to pick their brains on what to consider when booking your next holiday.

FLEXIBILITY “Read the terms and conditions and make sure your travel plans have good flexibility before committing,” advises David Ox, Winged Boots’ managing director. “Airlines are offering fantastic terms at present, and an experienced travel agent will ensure that hotels provide flexible conditions too. “This is where travel agents will prevail over the internet. Booking your holiday with someone who is experienced in the industry, who has great relationships with suppliers and can call a hotel directly with any requests and customer questions; in my opinion, this customer service will far succeed a quick click of a button on a price comparison site,” he adds.

“All Winged Boots’ personal travel managers hold a minimum five-years’ experience and the business is built around its outstanding reputation”

The friendly and knowledgeable team has visited every continent and can share first-hand experience for hotels from around the world, offering a personal insight that no amount of internet research will be able to offer.

ACCREDITATIONS It goes without saying that you want to book with an agency that has its travel accreditations and licenses. “Winged Boots is protected by ATOL, a government-run financial protection scheme operated by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA),” explains David. ATOL covers package holidays that include flights and means that if the ATOL protected company fails and your holiday can no longer go ahead you will be entitled to a refund if you are yet to travel, and hotel costs and flights home if you are abroad.

“I flew to Spain in July and was shocked at the short queues throughout the airports. Other holidaymakers kept their distance and all respected social distancing guidelines. It was very polite. “The resort was quiet, usually unheard of during peak summer season, but it was a pleasure to be there. The service levels are so high, and the locals are grateful for the tourism. Everyone from taxi drivers through to restaurant owners were friendly and welcoming. We had a fantastic stay. “Never has there been - and neither is there likely to be - a time like this to travel internationally. The entire experience was great, and I am already planning a weekend trip for August.”

FINANCIAL PROTECTION And finally, be sure to book with a company that offers complete financial protection. “We’re part of The Travel Trust Association (TTA),” David explains. “The TTA is one of the leading associations for the travel industry and is the only network in the UK to offer 100% financial protection to the consumer, ensuring total customer confidence.” With more than 20-years of industry experience, the TTA also shares its passion, expertise, skills AUGUST 2020 33

KATIE PIPER ON WELLBEING I

f there’s one thing that has helped Katie Piper when it comes to her wellbeing, it’s “not losing faith in how strong the mind can be”. The 36-year-old presenter, author, activist and model has been through devastating times in her life - she suffered life-changing burns in an acid attack in March 2008, and has since undergone around 250 operations. Remembering “how in control you actually are of the mind and the body” is important, she continues, “because sometimes moments of your life are taken out of your control. “But it’s what you do with it afterwards that will truly count or have the biggest impact.” Hampshire-born Piper - who has written memoirs and self-help books - is incredibly uplifting to chat to. She is passionate about keeping the conversation about wellbeing open at home, where she lives with her husband, carpenter Richard Sutton, and their two children, six-year-old Belle and two-year-old Penelope. Now, she has decided to share the relaxation techniques and rituals she does with her daughters on TV, in CBBC’s Celebrity Supply Teacher. While some schools have now reopened, lockdown measures put in place amid the coronavirus pandemic means parents are having to home-school their children, while also working from home. And the series sees a variety of famous faces stepping in to help with lessons, including former Spice Girl Geri Horner, astronaut Tim Peake, footballer Marcus Rashford, former politician Ed Balls, Paralympian Ellie Simmonds, and singer Kelis. Loosely based around the primary curriculum, there are 20 10-minute episodes covering topics such as science, English, geography, dance, history, and cookery. Piper’s subject is wellbeing, something which she says schools are “getting a lot better” at including as part of their teaching. “At my children’s school, they do meditation, they do yoga,” she notes. “It was even part of the home-schooling, so I was actually really pleased that we are, as a society, recognising that mental and physical health are very equal.” Taking over the classroom in Celebrity Supply Teacher - in which her voice is incredibly soothing to listen to - she talks about the benefits of

practising gratitude; for example, writing down what you are grateful for each day in a journal, as well as how you can use breathing to calm yourself down. “When you look back over things like gratitude journals, it gives you perspective, it helps you reflect in a more positive way rather than in a negative way. “That’s why it’s such a good ritual because it’s not just about doing it at that time, it’s about creating the material that you can come back to.” The last few months have obviously been a stressful and anxious time for everyone. Has Piper been using these sorts of relaxation methods herself even more than normal lately? “Yeah, and I think it’s been really important to be mindful and check in with yourself and go, ‘Actually, what I need to do is stop overthinking this, pause, go out in the garden, have a coffee, breathe or just think about what’s happening today’ - don’t go beyond today. “It’s just being mindful and checking in with yourself and saying, ‘Am I overwhelming myself? Is it necessary?’ And that’s the thing - no-one is going to take care of your mental health but you, it is your responsibility.” Her children have recently returned to school and pre-school, but she admits home-schooling “came with its challenges”. “Sometimes they would have too much screen time and get frustrated, and other times we did really great stuff like picking stuff from the garden and making collages with leaves and flowers and really great art projects. “So, I think, like most people, it was a rollercoaster of highs and lows, if I’m honest.” One positive of lockdown is that it has given us “the most valuable currency of all, which is time” she says. “And, if you’re a parent, time with your children is priceless, particularly if you’re a working parent; you’re never going to get this time to be at every mealtime and every bedtime again.” Over the last few months, she and her husband have succeeded in teaching their eldest daughter to ride a bike without stabilisers. “So, that was really lovely,” she gushes proudly. “And there are lots of videos for the grandparents. “We also potty trained my two-year-old, which was really great because she’s gone back to preschool now in her big girl pants and is really happy.” When it comes to Piper’s career, she says she’s “really fortunate to do stuff that I’m passionate

about, that I believe in”. After she gave up her right to anonymity in 2009, she made Channel 4 documentary Katie: My Beautiful Face to increase awareness about burn victims. She also presents a series on the channel called Bodyshockers, and was a star of the 2018 series of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. She admits she has had TV projects paused because of Covid-19. But a positive is that she has been able to dedicate more time recently to her podcast, Katie Piper’s Extraordinary People, in which she chats with inspirational people who have turned incredible adversity into powerful positivity. Then there’s her charity, the Katie Piper Foundation, which she set up in 2009, to help support people with burns and scars - something she wants to put a lot of energy into in future. “It’s a really difficult time for them. We’ve been directly affected by coronavirus with our patients, and then, of course, their funding has also been cut. “So, we are trying to find new and inventive ways to raise funds. But we will get there, and we will keep positive and keep going.” Asked if she’s finding it emotional knowing the charity is struggling, she muses: “I mean I suppose I’m in quite a good stable position; I know I can be strong and support the team. “But, yeah, there are survivors at the start of their journey who, regardless of our funding cuts, they all need our help, they still need their treatments, so we need to find ways to make that work.” Celebrity Supply Teacher is also on BBC iPlayer. CAT EYE SUNGLASSES If you have an oval shaped face, lucky you, pretty much any frames suit you, so it’s up to you whether you prefer a skinny or supersized style. If your face is heart-shaped (wider at the top, narrowing to the chin) or triangular (a wider jaw and narrower forehead), the exaggerated brow line of cat eye sunglasses is particularly flattering, but you’ll want to choose larger frames to balance your features. For round faces, you want to complement your shape, so choose angular frames. Similarly, square faces would benefit from a more rounded cat eye look.

Feline-inspired frames are a summer essential, says KatiE Wright.

hen you think of all the classic sunglasses shapes, from little round frames to giant square shades, perhaps the most divisive of all is the ‘cat eye’. It’s easy to dismiss winged sunnies and claim ‘they don’t suit me’, but in actual fact, they can be hugely flattering for a variety of face shapes - you just need to find the right pair. And that’ll be easy to do this summer, because the eyewear collections are full of catty creations, ready to provide the finishing touch to your floral frocks and jungle print playsuits. So, how do you find the right cat eye sunnies for your face shape?

THE HISTORY OF

JIMMY CHOO

We take a look back at the history of Jimmy Choo, rising from humble origins in a cobbler workshop to becoming one of Britain’s best-known fashion brands.

2017 Bridal Collection’ Below: Mens Autumn Winter 2017 Collection; Right: Jimmy Choo

Y

ou can trace its roots back to a bespoke shoemaker, Jimmy Choo, based in the East End of London in the early 1990s. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his first pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recalls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did that.” After learning from his father about the craft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduated with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital building. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed 56 AUGUST 2020

immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. High-profile devotees also include the Duchess of Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the City.” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would prove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularity, Choo was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue, who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots, sensed a larger market for Choo’s creations. She approached the shoemaker about partnering to create a line of ready-to-wear footwear -

“It’s a beautiful, distinctive art, and shoes are like the foundations. If the foundations aren’t right, the building won’t stand upright, and if a woman’s balance isn’t right, nothing else is.” - JIMMY CHOO

with a goal of creating a global luxury business. In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeping the focus on creating high-end footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every single pair had to be made by Choo himself. They contracted with Italian factories and opened their first boutique shop in Motcomb Street, London. Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring Hollywood celebrities including Julia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo stores opening in Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome, Ginza in Tokyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Street and Bond Street here in London. And by the turn of the century, the Choo name was a global brand, with high-end retail clients that included Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying Choo footwear. The Choo brand had also expanded to handbags and other accessories. But in the background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, Choo didn’t think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoes the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear for specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011 when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more than £500m. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Jimmy Choo has a global store network encompassing more than 150 stores and is present in the most prestigious department stores worldwide. This is what makes Jimmy Choo an interesting pairing with Michael Kors, as the former is known for its sky-high stilettos and glam, crystal-embellished designs, while the latter gravitates towards down-toearth leather goods and ready-to-wear. Jimmy himself now concentrates on a very personal business, where he designs directly for clients in high-end couture. Jimmy Choo was awarded an OBE in 2002, and girls and women around the world continue to covet owning a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes! www.jimmychoo.com

Light & Bright

rooms feeling a bit dark and dingy? here’s how to brighten them up… Words: luke rix-standing

H

omes tend to feel pokier the more time you spend in them – and at a time of national claustrophobia, we could all benefit from a bit of a refresh. Here’s how to make your home feel bright and breezy, without spending hours in showrooms or breaking the bank…

Let there be light Often, the simplest way to brighten up a dwelling is to add more light. Use accent lighting (smaller, directed sources like lamps) to emphasise focal points, like desks and tables, and give a space a sense of texture and contrast. Make sure said lights aren’t too concentrated, though – you’re going for layered illumination, not a spotlight from a police interrogation room. Consider kitting out fixings with ‘white light’ bulbs, which serve up a cool, daytime feel compared to their cosier, yellower counterparts.

Leave your windows clear Could you do more to maximise natural light? Placing a tall item of furniture next to a southfacing window is a classic design sin, and you don’t want hatstands or shelving unit casting a swathe of shadow across a room that should be bathed in light. If possible, keep your furnishings low-slung across the board. However cluttered your floor space, if most of the volume of a room is empty, it provides unbroken lines of light and sight. The higher the ceiling seems, the breezier and bigger the room will feel.

Add some plants The positive effects of nature on the psyche has been studied time and again, and even a few paltry pot plants can help a room feel instantly fresher and more lively. Spending time around greenery has a regenerative effect, and indoor-appropriate options range from large-leafed peace lilies to lowmaintenance succulents, palms and cacti. If your fingers lack even a tinge of green however, there’s no shame in opting for faux options. Today’s synthetic flowers are far less cardboard-like than in years gone by.

Master the mirrors Wall-mounted, full-length, or even dainty and decorative, mirrors will always brighten your 60 AUGUST 2020

abode, and a little strategic positioning can really optimise the ambience. A mirror opposite a door can visually double a room’s depth, lending any area the illusion of space, while a mirror opposite a window sends natural light bouncing from wall to wall. For added glamour, you could even experiment with mirrored furniture.

Consider your colours There’s nothing to say you can’t go for darker colours in small spaces, providing it’s done right. But generally speaking, lighter shades absorb

“However cluttered your floor space, if most of the volume of a room is empty, it provides unbroken lines of light and sight”

light far less than darker ones, and a fairer palette leaves a room looking big, bright and breezy. Pale, natural woods, whitewashed window sills, a creamcoloured couch or on-trend pastel furnishings – anything that takes your fancy can play a part in this – but most important by far is your paint or wallpaper. Dark walls can be elegant and attractive, but if it’s bright and airy you’re after, you might want to go for softer shades.

Give it a good clean Which do you think looks brighter and cleaner: a surface coated in a layer of grey grime and dust, or a freshly cleaned surface sparkling in the morning sun? The humble duster is perhaps your greatest ally in the battle against dinginess, and you won’t always be able to tell whether an area is poky until you’ve seen it after a good scrub.

‘Wash’ your walls No, not another way of telling you to get cleaning – by ‘wash’ your walls, we mean bathe them in horizontal splashes of light. This is usually achieved by putting a lamp tight against the wall, so that light spills across the surface at an acute angle, giving the impression that the whole space is aglow. Wall-washing can be as economical as it is attractive, and it’s better to bathe one area with a

broad sheet of light than clutter it with a crowd of fixings.

Include at least a little contrast It may sound counter-intuitive, but an entirely light space can start to feel cold and washed-out. Try to integrate some darker colours with slim, linear furnishings like chairs or picture frames, that adds definition to the overall look. Contrast is your friend, and the light will shine all the brighter for the introduction of a little dark.

The ultimate staycation W

ith everything happening this summer it looks like many of us will not be jetting off on holiday anytime soon, but that’s where Origin can help. Origin’s barn range allows you to capture the feeling of your summer holidays all year long. It gives you a swimming pool building with all the charm of a country barn conversion, blending in with your surroundings and emulating the countryside aesthetic, helping you get back to basics with nature. The quintessential British aesthetic of the barn range is a blend of traditional style and modern ethical considerations. Every element of the barn style can be tailored to suit your needs, whether you’re looking to create a tropical oasis in your garden by using bi-fold doors that open up, inviting the outside in or by putting together your own pool ‘club house’ and recreating that all inclusive feeling with a spa, sauna and swim up bar. Owning an Origin pool is about more than the pool itself, it’s the lifestyle that comes with it, it’s more important than ever to create space in your life for the people that mean the most and the barn style allows for that perfectly. The barn pool house is also an energy efficient design due to the improved layers of insulation and as Origin want to help you put your best green foot forward, there is also an extensive variety of other green energy options available so you can have your dream swimming pool, do your bit for the environment and save on running costs. The barn sits well in any rural garden setting as 62 August 2020

a design solution to finding space for an indoor pool. The selection of building sizes include different specifications and the opportunity to tailor your swimming pool house to your wants and needs, whether your pool is to be used for fun or fitness. If you want your pool house to be a place of wellness, the barn gives you the scope to add a gym, yoga room, juice bar or steam room and sauna. Origin pride themselves on their ability to do it all, delivering on a project from concept to completion whilst also being able to offer a wide variety of choice in design. Their other ranges include the highly anticipated ‘Eco-Swim’, as well as the ‘Olympic’ and their custom designs which often consist of extending homes to include a pool, these are widely used in more suburban areas when clients still want the luxury feel but don’t necessarily have an abundance of garden space. The traditional barn style lends itself to the idyllic nature of the countryside but can work well in any environment, it’s also designed to meet permitted development criteria so in most cases there’s no need to worry about planning permission. During this period where we’re spending more time than ever inside, you can plan the perfect staycation with Origin.

SIMPLE

WAYS TO FENG SHUI Finding calm and positive energy at home has never felt more important, says

a connection with nature,” says Rosheen Forbes, commercial activity & events leader at IKEA UK & Ireland. “Adding plants and greenery is an easy place to start, and depending on the ‘bagua’ (centre of energy), the colours you choose can increase the energy in certain areas. Calculating your bagua map is simple but needs approaching differently depending on your home,” Forbes adds. “If you live in an apartment, align the bottom of the bagua map with the front entrance wall. If you live in a house, use a compass and place the ‘career area’ (bottom middle on the bagua map) where your compass indicates the north. “So, when planning your garden, think about planting blue and purple flowers in your ‘wealth corner’ (south east), and pink, white and red flowers in the ‘relationship corner’ (south west) to increase the energy around love and partnerships. “Furthermore, outdoor mirrors can be used to attract abundance. With its curved shape and smooth flowing lines, an oval mirror can be used to reflect the light from the sun, making the space feel bigger and brighter. For smaller spaces, place two mirrors to face each other so the light bounces off, creating beautiful brightness.” Fancy giving your home some Feng Shui magic? Read on for more tips on how to go about it...

W

ith a growing focus on finding comfort at home and turning our living spaces into calming sanctuaries, this year has reignited our interest in Feng Shui. The ancient Chinese practice is all about creating harmony in a space - but goes far beyond using colour and light to create the right ambience, for instance. Strategically placing furniture to promote wellness, using artwork and living plants to get the right vibes and keeping rooms clear of clutter all factor. Based on the belief there’s a continuous flow of ‘chi’ - or energy - between an individual and their surroundings, thinking about how to arrange our objects to promote good work-life balance has additional appeal right now, with so many more of us adapting to life without a commute. There’s plenty of scope for Feng Shui to feature in gardens and patios too, for an extra boost when you throw open the doors or look out the window. “The practice of Feng Shui aims to strike a balance between the self and the natural world. It can be applied to any room of the home, particularly outdoor spaces, where there’s already 16 4J UAL U Y G 2 0U2 S 0 T 2020

Think about muted tones and textures

“The ancient Chinese practice is all about creating harmony in a space”

“When introducing the tools of Feng Shui into the home you need to think about adding balance and drawing energy into the room,” says Wil Law, home design stylist for John Lewis. “You can start with colours - using muted tones mixed with natural materials and soft furnishing accessories immediately creates a calming effect. Try a natural wooden armchair (like our Croft Collection Frome Leather Armchair, £899, John Lewis), with muted colours on the walls and textured vases and ornaments with a soft rug or carpet underfoot,” says Law.

Keep colours positive if you’re not into neutral Of course, colour is subjective, and what’s positive and calming to one person may be undesirable to

another. Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper, suggests using colours that reflect your personal happiness - but try to avoid darker colours or too much black, as these can sap positive energy flows throughout the home. “Brighter colours will have an immediately uplifting effect, so this may be the perfect opportunity to create a feature wall. You might even want to go so far as using your ‘commanding position’ (the spot furthest from the door and not in direct line with it) wall as the accent - and earn yourself double Feng-Shui points while you’re at it.” If you’re not sure where to start, check out I Want Wallpaper’s Erismann Paradiso Tropical Leaves Pattern Wallpaper in Jungle Leaf Forest, £12.99 per roll. In Feng Shui, green is the colour of renewal, fresh energy and new beginnings and is believed to help relieve stress. If going green with walls isn’t possible, Whitecroft says to look for accessories to enhance good energy. Living plants, brightly coloured cushions or a wall decoration will brighten a room and tie the look together in one fell swoop.

and bobs will maximise your desk area, while taking up less room - and they can be rolled away when it’s time to log off. Ikea’s FJALLBO Laptop Table, £55, ticks all the right boxes - and can even double up as a drinks trolley in the garden.

Aim for minimal clutter

Try to separate work and relaxation Another key Feng Shui tip is to keep your work space separate from your relaxation area, to help balance your work and home life and enable you to properly ‘switch off ’ while working from home. Out of sight, out of mind can only be a positive move on many levels - signalling when it’s time to end those video conferencing calls, light a candle and chill out. And just in case you’re wondering, candles should be placed in the bagua of your home - as well as releasing daily stress, their glow brings fiery energy and will keep the ‘chi’ harmonious and happy. But back to the business of a work station: slim, movable tables, deep enough for a laptop and bits

“If you’re short on outdoor space, stress not. Think about bringing the outside in with some greenery”

The starting point for any positive environment is to keep kitchen work surfaces and table tops as clear as possible. This might mean having a good sortout, and investing in some suitable storage solutions. “Old magazines, dusty ornaments and general brica-brac once placed in haste and never removed will not contribute to a positive energy environment,” says Whitecroft. “If you find it hard to part with sentimental clutter, find a box to neatly pack it away. Do be cautious though - simply moving clutter from one spot to another won’t do much to aide your energy flow. Donate to charity shops or find a way to bid farewell to items in order to clear your space, and ultimately, your mind.”

Bring the outside in If you’re short on outdoor space, stress not. Think about bringing the outside in with some greenery. “Plants are a brilliant way to bring energy into the room, add colour and cleanse the air. They look great in natural baskets or ceramic vases and succulents are easy to care for,” says Law Last but not least, another important Feng Shui tool to build a soothing environment is to consider carved furniture with smooth edges, over angular and sharp designs. Sharp edges and corners, otherwise known as bad energy ‘sha’, could have a negative effect when you’re unwinding - and right now it’s all about maximising the feel-good factor where we can and letting positive vibes flow!

Tales of Morocco Warm tones can enhance a chilled-out vibe at home, says SAM WYLIE-HARRIS

T

hese are challenging times for style hunters, especially if you’re in need of a far-flung fix and long to be somewhere else. In the new normal, souvenirs from souks, textiles and prints that draw on a mix of cultural influences, and decorative trimmings that reflect our eclectic tastes, feel as out of reach as a Moroccan riad - and wafting down a mosaic-tiled courtyard in a beaded kaftan. But while we’re social distancing, would-be globetrotters and those loving lockdown are perfectly placed to spice things up at home with warm tones of terracotta, a gleam of gold, and rich fabrics to capture a timeless, laid-back look inspired by the past, as we look forward to the future. Here’s how to introduce some sun-drenched stylish updates... “As spring creeps into summer, add touches of warmth to your scheme with terracotta reds, soft pinks and hints of gold,” says Emily Dunstan, home buyer at Heal’s. “Drawing inspiration from

the outdoors will create a comforting environment that’s gentle on the eye, perfect for a relaxing lounge area or bedroom; while blending rich, earthy tones with refined elements of brass and gold will evoke an exotic feel, bringing a sense of holiday heat into your home.”

It’s all in the detail

“Dunstan suggests weaving earthen tones into your existing palette with soft furnishings”

68 A U G U S T 2 0 2 0

Dunstan suggests weaving earthen tones into your existing palette with soft furnishings, such as their Linie Design’s Monu Rug in rose. “Its elegant, abstract motif will add interest, whilst subtle golden detailing will catch the light and create a subtle shimmer.” For smaller finishing touches, try introducing a distinctive pattern, such as those seen on this Stones Cushion, which combines rich gold with an eyecatching print, to add a hint of nomadic luxe. And to mirror the ornate carved detailing and handmade pieces you might see in a souk, Amara’s version looks as authentic as one you might be tempted to try and stuff in your suitcase. To make a larger statement, a patterned sofa in warm hues will create a focal point within the room: “This season, One Nine Eight Five (Heal’s design studio) took inspiration from the curves of our Wallis sofa, creating an abstract design that echoes the shades of spring. Featuring deep red and orange brush strokes alongside nude shades,

this bold upholstery also includes a velvet ochre backing, drawing the eye from every angle,” explains Dunstan.

Beige and browns blend effortlessly together Bold without being overpowering, shades of spice, rust and terracotta are design staples that lend themselves to a multitude of decors, from Scandi to mid-century,” says Suzy McMahon, buying director for Sofology. “These are colours that work best when chosen to complement, rather than clash. Keep walls and furniture tonal and embrace the richness that comes from reddish oranges and rusty browns.” For a truly impactful scheme, she recommends pairing accents of saturated tones of green, black and navy. And you can enhance the look with darker metallics, such as gold and bronze, rather than silver or chrome. “Furnishing your space with upholstery in one of these versatile spiced hues will create a warm and cosy feel,” says McMahon, and the choice of material will really set the tone here. “Selecting a velvet will create an opulent, luxurious finish, whereas a linen or cotton will bring a sophisticated

yet relaxed atmosphere. Layer with throws and scatter cushions in similar shades and tactile textures, to bring added comfort and depth to your scheme.”

Make the switch to decorative lighting As Claire Hornby, head of creative at Barker & Stonehouse points out, lighting is an integral part of any Moroccan-inspired interior. As well as floor-standing lanterns with an artisan feel, and the flattering soft glow of candles, an array of rattan pendants hung at various heights will offer a nod to bazaar style, without compromising the calm vibe of the space.

Warm golds radiate warmth A cool palette of grey and deepest charcoal, backed by a wall painted in gold or mustard, offers an earthy contrast and works brilliantly in an entrance hall or fireplace surround. Team with monochrome travel prints for a glowing getaway feeling. “Terracotta and rust are colours found in nature and offer a connection to the outside world, creating a sense of calm,” says Helen Shaw, director of Benjamin Moore UK. “Incorporating rich, bold spice colours creates instant character, taking a small space from sterile to stylish.” And if you really want to luxe it up, what could be more wondrous on the wall than metallic feather wallpaper? “We may not be able to go on fabulous holidays right now, but that doesn’t stop us taking inspiration from the stunning aesthetics of Moroccan interiors,” says Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper. “The use of spicy, warm tones and pops of gold can bring a much needed heat, and create a sense of the exotic in any room. Try a splash of cobalt blue to really bring a room to life - as inspired by the incredible Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech.”
