Welcome to our January issue. Happy New Year to our readers, writers, advertisers and all involved in the magazine. We wish you a very happy, healthy and successful 2014. ere have been recent reports of a large, black, animal spotted in Epping Forest. e creature was known as the Beast of Ongar, until it was officially spotted, a large black cat sitting on a tree. A panther… but was it? Rangers approached with caution… would it attack? It didn’t. As they cautiously went closer, they realised that this wild and dangerous cat, was in fact a stuffed toy strategically placed in a tree! Well there is a local resident with a sense of humour, despite the Council’s probably spending quite a few wasted hours on a joke but if nothing else, it is funny. e thought of somebody putting a feline teddy bear up a tree, looking as if it’s about to pounce, is amusing and they probably enjoyed a chuckle to themselves too. Brentwood Leisure Centre offers a wealth of opportunities for local entertainment, sports and other facilities. As a not-for-profit company, all surplus money is put back into the company to develop even more and improved facilities for the local and surrounding areas. For those who have ‘fitness’ as part of their New Year’s Resolution agenda, the Centre has 2 swimming pools, 12 court sports hall, martial arts centre and a 3G synthetic football pitch. Most of us look forward to and enjoy Christmas and appropriate celebrations: parties, fun with family and friends. As most of the Western world do not work around the holiday season, it is easier to relax and distance yourself (if possible) from the daily, business grind and pressures. However once we get into January – it’s back into full swing with resolutions, goals, refreshed ambitions and focus… It’s time to get back to the desk and start the revised, business plan, if not already prepared and actioned. Ironically, a lot of business owners do not have focussed goals and ambitions; perhaps this is due to the current economic climate and surviving is good enough, but is it? ere can always be better… As usual, we have Q&A on everything dental related from our resident Dr. Ash Parmar, beauty tips from Frances Furlong at Perfect Skin, a variety of detox, health and beauty, house and garden articles. With special thanks to Penny Lancaster for use of her image for the front cover. Once again, happy new year.

A PANTHER in Epping Forest? WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

T

here have been recent reports of a large, black, animal spotted in Epping Forest. Pranks can be amusing but it is always worth considering how the recipient would feel or to ask yourself, how would you feel, if a particular joke was played on you? e worst story I ever heard involved a husband and wife. e husband was a habitual prankster – his wife was exasperated. If they had dinner guests, he would plant a secret microphone on her, so they could hear what she was doing, when she discreetly left the room to deal with nature’s call. Clearly the wife must have loved him dearly to have put up with this… allegedly for years. Eventually, she planned her revenge… Saturday night – Lottery. Both their parents and quite a few friends were over for the evening. e house was crowded 12

JANUARY2014

with guests and she was busy making food and serving everybody refreshments and nibbles. Lottery on the television, she gave him the ticket and asked him to check as she was busy. Dismissively, he checked the numbers as the balls were selected… ummm… 1 number… 2 numbers… 3 numbers… he sat up in his chair, his pulse racing, excited and barely able to breathe. 4 numbers… 5 numbers… 6 lucky numbers. Jumping up from his chair he screamed with delight and was hysterical. Everybody was cheering and celebrating… everybody was laughing. So the Lucky Winner rushed up to the bathroom to have a quick shower so he would look great when the camera team arrived to interview him on the News. Refreshed and excited – he appeared in the middle of the lounge, very pleased with himself, he was a multi-millionaire and now ready to face the world’s media; but everybody was calmly sitting drinking tea, nibbling on cakes and enjoying a chuckle. ey looked at him, pointed and simultaneously burst out laughing. His wife had at last, paid him back. e lottery was in fact from the previous week. As she knew the numbers, she bought a matching ticket and put on the recording in front of his family and friends. It took him a week to get over the shock and humiliation but it calmed his enthusiasm for playing pranks on others…

School ViSitS, choiceS and deciSion time for September 2014 OAK-TREE SCHOOLS SET THE STANDARDS HIGH

T

he Spring Term is here, so parents will have researched and visited potential schools and are now ready to decide on which school is best for their children to start at in September. But what is it that parents are looking for? Home-school communication and the size of schools were two key factors highlighted by a recent survey of parents at the Oak-Tree Group of Schools. e Oak-Tree Group comprises three privately-owned independent schools in the Epping Forest area. Normanhurst School in North Chingford is available for children up to 16, and Oaklands School in Loughton and Coopersale Hall School in Epping take children from 2½ to 11. Each school has its own individual character and together they offer an excellent standard of education in happy, secure and family-orientated environments. In the survey of Oak-Tree Schools’ parents, it was found that a key influencing factor when considering schools was the level of direct contact between parents and their child’s teacher or keyworker. Seeing teachers for a maximum of 5 minutes at an annual parents’ evening isn’t nearly enough; parents like to be able to see their child’s teacher when it suits them. Many parents commended the Oak-Tree Schools’ standard practice of providing a high level of communication between parents and school. All Oak-Tree Schools offer an ‘open door’ policy, and teachers are available for brief chats or longer discussions on a daily basis. Even the Headmistresses are readily accessible. Informal coffee mornings with the Headmistress and Group Principal, Matthew Hagger, take place for each

yeargoup in the Autumn or Spring Terms. Mr Hagger comments, “We value the input our parents give when it comes to the education we provide to their children. Parents have many good ideas and the coffee mornings are perfect for developing our schools to an even higher level. We are always open to new initiatives as the children can only benefit from anything we introduce.” Another key factor that parents consider is the size of the school. Smaller, nurturing environments are desirable but when is small too small? Conversely, bigger schools can see children lost in the larger year groups and surroundings. e Oak-Tree Group gives strength in numbers that sees a balance between too small and too large. Individually the Oak-Tree Schools use their size to their pupils’ advantage to personalise the education and to know each one as an individual. Collectively they educate around 750 pupils and employ around 245 teachers, classroom assistants, support and ancillary staff, so

can make use of shared resources and levels of specialist expertise. Parents also benefit from larger scale Oak-Tree social events, such as the Firework Night and Summer Ball. Although every day is an Open Day at the Oak-Tree Schools, each March and October the doors are opened for new parents to visit in groups. ese official open events were extremely well attended in 2013 and many new families registered their children for a place on the waiting lists before leaving. ey are useful as the pupil guides give detailed accounts of what life is really like at school. Personal visits are often arranged to suit parents’ busy schedules. When decisions need to be made that will have such a long-term effect on children, it is important to get it right first time round. An Oak-Tree education has become the standard to aspire to in the Epping Forest area and the schools will help you to make the right choices. Learn more at www.oaktreeschools.co.uk ■

New Year’s Resolutions WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

A

s Big Ben’s Bells confirmed our move into the New Year - what were people’s resolutions? According to the University of Scranton ( Journal of Clinical Psychology)* for 2012 – the top ten were as follows: 1. Lose weight. 2. Getting organized 3. Spend less, save more 4. Enjoy life to the fullest 5. Staying fit and healthy 6. Learn something exciting 7. Quit smoking 8. Help others in their dreams 9. Fall in love 10. Spend more time with family Although these statistics are based on American analysis, I am pretty confident that the same list would be relevant to both UK too and especially our areas in Essex. Hopefully this month’s magazine will help with some of those resolutions such

as features including ideas for improved business strategies which would also help with the development of an improved work/life balance (Six Steps) and exercise in the dancing/walking editorial. As for spending less and saving more, very difficult when those High Street sales beckon your credit cards, debits cards and any cash left over from Christmas! Personally, the only surprise for me was that ‘Quit Smoking’ was number 7. Normally that would be high

18

JANUARY2014

on resolution lists so therefore it would imply that many people have already given up smoking or simply not started. It’s actually become quite anti-social to smoke; you can’t in restaurants, offices, trains and although there’s always the huddled smokers outside of an office, or on street corners, most people have already given up smoking and the warnings on the boxes, are certainly very off-putting. So looking at the list as an entire entity (and with a tad of cynicism) – it would appear that most people feel fat, unloved (hopefully not replies from married people), bored with their work/life, do not look after themselves and

are too busy with their jobs to see their family! As an optimist, could it be that people want to have a better quality of life and to feel even better about themselves, are readily admitting there are areas which merit improvement and want to strategize twelve months in order to strive for perfection in all areas? According to John Norcross of the University of Scranton, it’s important to make resolutions ‘tangible’ otherwise inspiration and excitement can very

Michelle Harris quickly pave the way to frustration and disappointment. If losing weight – how much and when – or perhaps instead of losing weight – a plan to give up certain foods. It’s important to be specific so rather than ‘go to the gym’ – perhaps a weekly schedule of Wednesdays and Saturdays. is way if measured, it’s more likely to be successful rather than planning half-an-hour every day which is improbable. “We say if you can’t measure it, it’s not a very good resolution because vague goals beget vague resolutions” John Norcross of the University of Scranton. With whatever resolutions have been made by the readers of these magazines, I hope that at least and despite it being a 12 month plan – the resolution will still be in place by at least the end of January. ere’s nothing worse or more depressing than throwing away your resolution list because it’s already been broken… By 2nd January! *www.statisticbrain.com/new-years-resol ution-statistics/ ■

H

aving spent the majority of my youth and formative years living and working in Central London I have developed a profound love of our fabulous city and take every opportunity of spending a considerable amount of my spare time enjoying the delights therein. Whether its visiting our wonderful art galleries, exhibitions, markets ,shops, theatres and concert halls, or just enjoying strolling through the maze of streets in e City or West End, all steeped in unique individual style and charm and thronging with people from every corner of the world . e city’s heart being set around our great River ames with its dramatic eclectic background of imposing architecture providing a backcloth worthy of the talents of a present day Canaletto . As the saying goes “the best of music jars” , for although I cease to tire of London I truly delight in returning home to the fresh air and solitude of the Essex countryside and in particular our local Villages and Forests of Epping and Hainault, the former playground of many of our past Kings and Queens. I still marvel at my good fortune of having lived worked and played here for over forty years and can fully understand why our local councilors and planners jealously preserve the area as they do , protecting it as much as they possibly can from the abuse of indiscriminate development. In all of the years that I have acted as an Estate agent locally we have seen very little development . In fact it has only been since the turn of this century that any major new developments have came about at all. It may sound selfish but this has meant that property values have in the main been insulated from the ups and downs of boom and bust and have, with very few exceptions, maintained a high level of growth with homes of all types experiencing great demand and with New Homes being in the greatest demand of all. 20

ASHBEE LODGE

HIGHBEAM HOUSE THE CAVENDISH COLLECTION

It is my view that it will be the new homes being built now that will, in the fullness of time, show the greatest price appreciation and will doubtless prove to be a fantastic investment. It is for this reason that I have for the past seven years or so dedicated much of my energies to this side of the business and have been rewarded by gaining the support of the major developers of quality homes to whom I have hopefully given helpful advice in planning and marketing. We have been fortunate to have introduced buyers to some future classic homes locally. From the exciting ultra modern architectural gem , Silverhind, built by the master of quality home building , Bob Weston which now due to last minute cancelation only have the last two great apartments which are not

spoken for. To the masterly Cavendish Collection built to the highest specification by the local Doyen, Higgins Homes, on the sought after Courtland Estate in the heart of Chigwell Village. We shortly hope to exchange on three of their five fabulous luxury homes . Which only goes to prove that if you provide quality at the right level of price the demand is there. is is also proving so with Higgins Landmark Development of quality apartments at Ashbee Lodge just a stone’s throw from Tube and shops at Chigwell . A truly delightful piece of architecture worthy of it’s name. Galliard Homes are steaming away with Highbeam House in Woodford Green, bringing their expertise in “West End “ development to the verdant glades of Woodford. ey have developed a fine collection of spacious single level and Duplex units of generous proportions set in what is probably the finest mature and beautifully landscaped gardens in the area. Galliard are offering to pay the stamp duty on all purchases until the end of this month, so hurry and make your reservation. Please call the office for further details , brochures and appointments to view any of the aforementioned. I assure you that you will not be disappointed . I am now off to my favorite London haunts to do what is for me some early seasonal shopping. Seasons greetings to you all, and a happy and healthy 2014. SIX STEPS TO SUCCESS WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

M

ost of us look forward to and enjoy Christmas and appropriate celebrations: parties, fun with family and friends. ere can always be better… STEP 1 Write down your goals. What you would like to achieve in the next six months, twelve months and three years. Seeing these ambitions on paper (or screen) sets an immediate focus on what needs to be done in order to achieve the desired result. Also it facilitates the ability to imagine the success and the difference that could potentially be made to both business prospects and personal lifestyle. STEP 2 ink about your target audience. Why should they use your business (products or service) as opposed to your competitors? What is your USP and are your target audience aware of how THEY could BENEFIT by using YOU? is is where copywriters become involved; by using emotive language to strategically convert WANT to NEED, the message and its poignancy can be carefully steered through the power of words and their ability to touch the senses, emotions and desires. STEP 3 Ascertain the appropriate budget and wherever possible, maximising FREE opportunities such as social media. During recession, many companies cut back on advertising and marketing. ey think it’s a good idea to slash this budget as a priority – however if you do – how will your potential clients know you’re still in business? If your competitors maximise their visibility – potentially, they could get YOUR clients. STEP 4 Strategize your campaign and steer it dependent upon the clients’ perspective – not yours. Most companies make this mistake – it can be costly.

22

JANUARY2014

STEP 5 List your current marketing tools, i.e. website, brochures, leaflets, etc. Websites need to be fresh, interesting and regularly updated. is is for a multitude of reasons such as (in part) SEO and to keep potential customers, returning to your website as either a point of interest or to buy. Websites can easily become stale and passé. Your website reflects the calibre of your services/products and company. Also the attention span is very short, most people subconsciously decide within just three seconds whether to stay and continue reading, or look elsewhere. at forefinger on the right hand side of the mouse can be twitchy!.. We all do it – we’re all easily bored. Just ask yourself, even if in the midst of a great film, when advertisements appear – have you immediately switched off and lost momentum? A refreshing cup of tea perhaps? Check the kids? e moment attention is diverted… you’re gone. STEP 6 Consider the best team to work alongside you to help improve your sales, profitability and corporate visibility so that companies think of you – when needing your products or services. e team at Star Copywriting Limited help their clients to maximise their business opportunities by offering a range of business services including websites, copywriting, marketing advice and strategies. LOCAL BUSINES S

BUSINESS

IN 2014 How will you achieve your business plans for 2014? Whilst each business owner will answer this differently, maintaining a good profile within the local community, and attracting more customers may be high on everyone’s resolutions list. is year, Chigwell Business Group (CBG) celebrates 10 years of supporting local businesses through sharing expertise and contacts, and looks forward to welcoming many new visitors. Below, CBG Members Neil Weiner, 4Square Consulting, and Marc Preston, Vertice Development Management, give their views for the year ahead… Christmas can feel like a lot of planning for just one day. So why don’t we put the same energy into our Financial Planning? Neil Weiner, 4Square Consulting, Member of CBG for 5 years

Neil Weiner Where are we spending Christmas? What size turkey should we get? Christmas can seem like an exercise in planning. Why don’t we apply the same energy to Financial Planning?

24

JANUARY2014

Whilst Christmas is full of predictable traditions, the year ahead is much less predictable. When it comes to planning for the future, we tend to make excuses: ‘I haven’t got time’, ‘I don’t need protection’ etc. Life is unpredictable, but even if we all live to a healthy old age, we may reach a point where we no longer work. We will still need to eat and drink and, hopefully, be merry. And we will need an income to fund this. We all have plans for 2014 – a family wedding or that big holiday perhaps – and it can be difficult to consider investing in the future whilst managing the present. ankfully, pensions do not require an ‘all or nothing’ approach. An affordable regular amount now can build over time into a substantial sum. It is also worth noting that the Government has an Inheritance Tax Allowance available worth £325, 000. erefore, anyone with a property worth over £325, 000 if single, or £650, 000 if married, has a potential liability of 40% of the value of their assets. Unless you and yours are going to live as multi-millionaires forever, Financial Planning is something you may not want to ignore in 2014. 4Square Consulting aims to help guide you through the many options for your future. 4Square Consulting is a trading name of Neil Weiner which is authorised and

regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. e Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate Taxation Advice. If 2014 will see you extending your business premises, home or dipping your toes into the world of Property Development, you should read on… Marc Preston, Vertice Development Management, Member of CBG for 2 years

Marc Preston is year many of us will capitalise on a more positive financial outlook by investing in our commercial premises and our homes. Perhaps even building entirely new ones. If you fall into any of these categories, it is essential that you consult a Quantity Surveyor to ensure your construction project runs smoothly. A Quantity Surveyor manages all costs relating to building projects, from the initial calculations to the final figures. Our aim is to minimise the costs of a project and enhance value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality. Working on or off-site, we keep track of any variations to the contract, creating reports to show profitability. Vertice Development Management works with Architects to confirm plans are affordable. We obtain

competitive quotations so that all work is planned for – avoiding the costly pitfalls associated with incomplete estimates. We make sure contracts are clear and comprehensive. In short, our role is to identify and manage the risks associated with your project, ensure work is completed on time, within your budget and avoid disputes by acting at the earliest opportunity. Any construction project is a complex process involving many parties and legalities. We know that queries needing to be dealt with quickly and efficiently, can arise at any time. For that reason we developed ‘Vertice Online’ - a unique service, meaning that we are accessible to Clients 24/7. Whatever your property plans for 2014, we’d be happy to discuss them. CBG meets for breakfast on Fridays, 7.30 – 9am, at Woolston Manor Golf Club, Chigwell. ere is a policy of one person per profession. To arrange a visit contact Chairman Jon Barrett on 07752 337169. CHARITY CHAMPION GETS WHEELS WORDS CHRISTINE BAKER

WE CONTINUE THE STORY OF CHARITY CHAMPION LLOYD MOULDER, CO-FOUNDER OF DESIGNER BATHROOM SUPPLIER BATHWORKS BASED IN WOODFORD GREEN AND MILTON KEYNES.

s part of celebrating 10 years in business, Lloyd Moulder, co-founder of designer bathroom supplier BathWorks, has accepted a Charity Challenge to raise £10,000 for local charity Haven House Children’s Hospice with a programme of fundraising activities. Lloyd said “Ten years in business should be a celebration especially in these lean economic times. I wanted to challenge myself to do something to help others less fortunate. Just visiting Haven House is a revelation with the great work it does for all the children who stay there and their families.” Haven House is also celebrating 10 years of caring. e Woodford Green charity cares for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions who are unlikely to reach adulthood. e charity provides specialist nursing care and support for the wider family to ease the burden of care and give a sense of

support and trust. At any one time around 150 families in the local communities across North and East London and West Essex are benefitting from these services. “THRILLING BUT SCARY TOO…” On Saturday April 26th at Headcorn Airfield in Kent, Lloyd will take a 20 minute plane ride and when it reaches 12,000 feet he will throw himself out of the plane in freefall for 45 seconds at up to speeds of 120 miles per hour. Fortunately it will be a tandem skydive so we can expect him to land safely! en on Sunday 10 August Lloyd joins the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 mile route in an event which celebrates the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Prudential RideLondon -Surrey 100 starts in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and then follows a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside. With leg-testing climbs and a route made famous by the world’s best cyclists at the London 2012 Olympics, as in it finishes on finishes on MAKING MUSIC AT HAVEN HOUSE e Mall in central London. TRAINING BEGINS… Training and getting fit is lonely but Lloyd does get to ride through the attractive and leafy Epping Forest. Lloyd’s wife Julie and their two boys Frankie and Freddie will be cheering him on along with friends and family who will all come out to support his magnificent fundraising efforts. Haven House needs to raise £2.5 million annually in order to continue the excellent services. Around 70% comes from fundraising initiatives and with public expenditure under extreme pressure, it is very likely Haven House we will need to rely even more heavily on fundraisers like Lloyd Moulder. But he needs help too – raising sponsorship is his priority. Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of Haven House, said “We are delighted to be working in partnership with BathWorks. eir support throughout the year will help to raise vital funds for our children and their families.” visit www.havenhouse.org.uk See details of Lloyd’s fund raising challenges on the new website www.bath-works.co.uk and add your support by clicking on http://www.justgiving.com/bathworks n

n fact, they were neighbours, at Mayfair’s 25 and 23 Brook Street respectively, albeit separated by a couple of centuries. Handel lived in Mayfair from 1723, while Hendrix took up residence in 1968. (He was seen buying a copy of the baroque composer’s Messiah at a record store in South Molton Street.) It is one of countless examples of how for centuries London has lured, captivated and inspired musicians - of every genre. Recently an announcement has been made that Jimi Hendrix’s flat is be turned into a museum with Lottery funds.

COURTESY OF THE ROLLING STONES

Gershwin, lost in the romance of A Foggy Day In London Town, and Noel Coward celebrating The Lambeth Walk, and Bertha From Balham, Davies, mined, honed, and polished the poetry of the streets the rest of us take for granted. Almost every inch of the capital is exalted: Greats from Glen Miller and Frank Sinatra to Rod Stewart have covered Maschwitz and Sherwin’s A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square; The Clash put Notting Hill and the Westway on the map, as did Squeeze with Clapham Junction; Suggs and Madness have honoured Camden Town; Linda Lewis and Adam and The Ants, Hampstead; The Rolling Stones sang about the Chelsea Drug Store and the Street Fighting Men in Mayfair’s Grosvenor Square; and of course The Beatles, recalled The Fool On The Hill (on Primrose Hill). Not all musicians come to write about London. Some, Lou Reed and country rockers The Eagles, (who took up residency in Barnes while recording their eponymous debut set) come for the capital’s creative edge. North Londoners will recall Bob Dylan announcing some years ago that he was thinking of moving to Crouch End, after an extended recording spell, and by all accounts a few pints, with former Eurythmics Dave Stewart. Mozart was just eight years old when he completed his first symphony in a house off Sloane Square. The bricks and mortar, the very fabric of London have played their part.

Bob Dylan shot the iconic promo for Subterranean Homesick Blues in the shadow of The Savoy, holding cue cards he and Donovan, the singer dubbed ‘the British Dylan’, had been up all night scrawling. And is there a more famous, or enigmatic, telephone box than the one David Bowie posed in for the cover of the 1972 album, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars? To relax and unwind there is the Ian Dury memorial bench - that plays some of his tracks - in the glade he loved in Richmond Park. Eel Pie Island is an island in the River Thames at Twickenham, and was known as a major jazz and blues venue in the 1960s. Famous names who performed at the dance hall between 1957 and 1967 include: Long John Baldry’s Hoochie Coochie Men (including Rod Stewart), David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Tridents (featuring Jeff Beck) and The Yardbirds. The island and studios are opened twice yearly to the public. Rod Stewart himself was born and raised in Archway Road, Highgate. Ultimately, it was the Fab Four, who in a few short minutes walking back and forth across a zebra crossing in St John’s Wood, close to the studio where the Liverpudlians recorded some of the most enduring music of the 20th century, created the most iconic of all London music images, the cover of Abbey Road. Forty five years on (2014) it remains a potent shrine for music lovers from all over the world. Another beat, on another memorable street, in this city of music and recordings that are timeless. TOO MUCH TIME ON YOUR HANDS?

nce upon a time a man would own one watch. It would be cared for, maintained and possibly only worn on special occasions rather than every day – especially if the owner worked in manual labour. I say ‘own’ rather than buy because this watch may have been passed down from father to son or bought as a gift for a significant birthday. Ladies often went without a watch altogether and if they wore one, the same rules applied as for men. Back then, watches were an important and relatively expensive purchase and the idea of a collection or ‘wardrobe’ of watches would have been out of the question.

O

Things have changed and, despite the fact that the correct time is displayed all around us on computer monitors, mobile phones and even microwave ovens, watch ownership continues to rise. Whether they are Swatches or the finest haute – horology

more of us have an increasing number of watches. Not that these are curated collections, carefully built up after careful consideration of each purchase – rather we accumulate watches, as gifts, pieces bought in our youth that we would never wear now, family bequests as well as current favourites. Our tastes evolve over time and the watches that fall out of favour end up at the back of the drawer gathering dust. What better way to offset the cost of the festive season than by having a little clear-out? While a drawer full of cheap and cheerful quartz may not pay off the bills – you never know what you might find. That watch you inherited but never wear may be a vintage classic. You might find that you only wear white metal now, leaving a collection of gold or gold-plated pieces bereft and ignored. What may be a dated and ugly watch to you may be a retro

gem to a collector – or maybe not. Fellows Auctioneers handle more watches per year than any other UK auction house and offer watches for sale at a wide range of values. Valuations for auction are free and can be requested through the Fellows website very easily. With over 35 watch and watch-related auctions per year you never have long to wait for your items to sell. The auction process is an increasingly popular way to sell watches and jewellery. The worldwide exposure of the sales through the development of online bidding means that your goods achieve their true market value while the auction charges are often much lower than the margin a dealer or retail shop would hope to make. If you think you might have some unloved watches in the back of a drawer or the bottom of a jewellery box, get in touch with Fellows. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will let you know whether it would be suitable for auction and how much you might expect to make.

Changing Peoples' Lives... BY ASH PARMAR PORCELAIN VENEERS In December, I was privileged to attend a world-class dental seminar in Istanbul. e Course was with arguably the best porcelain veneer dentist in the world called Galip Gurel, and also a pioneering dentist/technician called Christian Coachman who teaches about the Digital Smile Design concept. In this article, I am going to focus on the latest updates on porcelain veneers – many times an excellent solution for improving a smile. A person may be embarrassed with his or her smile due to problems such as crookedness of teeth, gaps between teeth, discolorations or even missing teeth. In modern cosmetic dentistry, there are numerous options available. e key pre-requisite for doing porcelain veneer treatment is to have teeth in the RIGHT POSITION first. is often means a course of orthodontic treatment (i.e. braces) beforehand. Once this is achieved, then the amount of tooth preparation is very minimal (up to 0.5mm only), or indeed none at all. When the thin porcelain veneers are bonded to the outer layer called enamel, then the long-term strength and success rates are very high (nearly 98% after many years in a recent study published by Galip Gurel and his team). e Course I went on was a live demonstration. ere was a young man called Mahmut who had damaged his teeth a lot from acid erosion (caused by drinking a lot of fizzy drinks). His teeth appeared to be much smaller, darker and with gaps between them. It 36

JANUARY2014

HAVING FUN AND LEARNING FROM THE BEST - ISTANBUL DECEMBER 2013

was obvious that Mahmut was really embarrassed with smiling – photos and a video were taken of him talking and smiling. e smile was then analysed using sophisticated computerized techniques to really understand where his smile was, and where the cosmetic dentist could take him. e technician then also created aesthetic wax ups on a model of Mahmut’s teeth. is was a “mock up” or a blueprint of his new smile. Special white filling material was then used to create a trial smile in his mouth within minutes. e new portrait photographs and video showed a completely new person. Mahmut was smiling confidently and this was evident by the sparkle in his eyes. Christian finally created an emotional Keynote presentation with music to show the young man’s transformation. Seeing the emotional reaction from Mahmut and also how the new smile with porcelain veneers will completely change

his life was a very special moment for us all. is emotional reaction (often with tears) is also what I have experienced many times, and it is humbling to acknowledge what cosmetic dentistry can do for someone. So returning back to Smile Design By Ash in Chigwell, UK I feel invigorated and excited about implementing the latest skills I have learnt from my mentors. One of the most exciting and innovative services I will now offer is a consultation for any person that is embarrassed with their smile to come in and have a complimentary Digital Smile Design concept just like what Mahmut had. Using photos, video analysis and mock ups (or a trial smile in the mouth), I will be able to immediately show how the smile will look in relation to the full face. Most of my advanced dental training in the past has been in America, and in recent years I have selected the best dentists in Europe to understand what

both continents have to offer. So, whether someone is after a “Hollywood white smile”, or a “beautiful, natural, more European smile”, my master ceramist technician and I can create this. Finally, I would like to announce the launch of a new idea called “Whitening Wednesdays”. As a dental practice, we will offer any patient teeth whitening treatments at half price (i.e. 50% off ) if they come in on a Wednesday. We only use ZOOM, the No.1 professional whitening system recommended by dentists. So if you have straight teeth, but simply want them whiter so that you look younger and feel more confident, then book in a date for a Wednesday! For other concerns, please phone our Patient Care Coordinator Dee on 020 85000544. Also don’t forget to check out our newly launched and redesigned website www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk ■

& TREATMENT FOR VARICOSE VEINS

health b eauty

LEADING CONSULTANT VASCULAR SURGEON MICHAEL GAUNT OPENS A NEW PRACTICE AT THE LONDON CLINIC IN HARLEY STREET AND DISCUSSES THE TREATMENT OF VARICOSE AND THREAD VEINS… WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS? Varicose veins are a common problem affecting at least 20% of the adult population in the UK. ey occur when small valves inside the veins stop functioning correctly. Rather than blood flowing effortlessly back towards the heart, the blood stagnates within the veins causing aching,

Michael Gaunt tiredness and discomfort. At first, problem veins may not be visible but symptoms occur. Sometimes patches of blue thread veins may be the earliest signs of an underlying problem. Eventually, the abnormal veins may become swollen, enlarged and varicose. is condition can be embarrassing and painful. Varicose veins are usually blue or dark purple in colour and may also be lumpy or twisted in appearance. While any vein can be affected, varicose veins most commonly develop in the legs and feet – predominantly because standing and walking can put pressure on the veins in the lower body. WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER HAVING THEM TREATED? In the developing stages, varicose veins and thread veins may be primarily a cosmetic problem. However, if ignored, the condition can deteriorate and a variety of complications can occur such as leg swelling, pigmentation of the skin around the ankles and ulcers. Occasionally, veins can burst causing bleeding, or the blood within the veins can clot leading to the painful condition of phlebitis or even deep vein thrombosis. People who use air travel for work or holidays may be at increased risk particularly if those flights are long haul. IS THIS TREATMENT JUST FOR WOMEN? Certainly not, it can affect men just as much as it can affect women. Men tend to cover their legs up more, so the problem may be hidden away and ignored, with some men only seeking treatment when their veins become swollen and complications start to occur. It is important to target varicose veins before they become a problem, as without medical treatment some conditions may worsen. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN TREATMENT AND IS IT PAINFUL? Fortunately, modern, minimally invasive treatments can often be

38 JANUARY2014

performed under local anaesthetic as a walk-in, walk-out procedure. is leaves the patient with minimal postoperative pain with practically immediate return to normal activity. Michael Gaunt is a leading venous expert and has extensive knowledge of these procedures, having treated over 4,000 patients with the Endovenous Laser and ClariVein techniques. Both techniques are associated with considerably less pain, bruising and scarring than traditional stripping techniques. IS IT PERMANENT? Most modern techniques for treating varicose veins are associated with very good, long-term results. Patients are benefiting more and more from the advances in the treatments and the new procedures that are now available. HOW CAN I GET MY THREAD VEINS TREATED? Not all visible veins in the legs are varicose veins. Small veins underneath the skin, known as thread veins, spider veins or reticular veins, may become prominent due to a variety of different reasons. ey can cause symptoms of discomfort, itching and irritation as well as being unsightly. Often the appearance of thread veins is due to the effect of daily wear and tear on delicate skin and local treatments are effective. However, sometimes thread veins are an indication of underlying varicose veins which may not be visible on examination. Treatment of the thread veins will not be successful unless the underlying problem - for example the varicose veins - has been corrected first. erefore, a thorough venous assessment is necessary before initiating any local treatment for thread veins. is could include injection microsclerotherapy or VeinWave therapy. Once underlying varicose veins have been treated or excluded, local treatment of the thread veins is much more likely to be successful. VeinWave therapy is also very effective at removing unsightly facial red veins affecting the nose and cheeks. ONCE I’VE DECIDED TO HAVE TREATMENT, WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP? Make an appointment where we can assess your condition and discuss potential treatment and steps forward. ese no obligation consultations are offered at e London Clinic in Harley Street. If you would like to book a mini-consultation, including an ultrasound scan, for just £95, or if you would like to find out more about your treatment options call 01223 305858 or visit www.michaelgaunt.com ■

TWO PART SERIES ON SKIN SOLUTIONS PART ONE - YOUNGER SKIN CONCERNS This month I will be addressing skin concerns for younger people and tips on how to help. With the Christmas season now in full swing we can see the effects it can have on our skin's appearance and energy levels. Drink lots of water, keep hydrating your skin, I love Suisse Absolue Serum Hydra which is like a glass of water to the skin. Also don't forget your daily vitamin C and zinc, echinacea and astragalus to help your immunity. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year, see you in 2014. PROBLEM 1 ACNE, SCARS AND BLEMISHES Using good antibacterial washes which contain glycolic and salicylic acid are great for soaking up the excessive oil and helping to prevent outbreaks. As well as good hygiene also seek medical advice as antibiotics in some cases are needed. Laser treatments and skin peeling can really help and taking vitamin C and zinc daily to help heal the skin is really useful. Scarring can be greatly improved with deeper peeling and derma stamp treatments. PROBLEM 2 PIGMENTATION is can be caused by environmental factors, hormonal or due to medications. Younger girls taking the oral contraception pill beware! Some pills can cause dark areas to appear on the face and body (especially top lip), use a daily SPF protector, avoid sun beds and direct sun as it can get darker. Pigmentation can also be a real problem for olive and darker skin types especially when the skin is very dry. Using a face protector and

40 JANUARY2014

creams to help break down pigment can be useful as well as considering skin peeling and light treatments. PROBLEM 3 STRETCH MARKS Often associated with pregnancy, but can affect you during puberty, teenage girls can notice them to the leg, buttock and breast area during the growing spurt. Men can also be affected. It is easier to treat stretch marks sooner rather than later, red marks can be lessened using lasers or derma rollers to the

area to boost collagen. Essentially these marks are a micro tear in the dermis and will never go, but the appearance of them can be greatly reduced. PROBLEM 4 UNWANTED HAIR ere are so many hair removal techniques out there, it's basically finding the one that suits you! Laser hair removal is great, but you do need to attend the treatments regularly and at the correct time of the hair growth cycle

to get the results you want. Waxing is great for some, but for others can cause ingrown hairs, glycolic acid based products and peeling agents are particularly useful to help treat them. Men often find that when they shave this can be a problem also and glycolic acid creams can help. Hair removal creams can irritate sensitive skins so patch test a small area first to ensure it is safe to use. PROBLEM 5 DRY SKIN AND ECZEMA Common factors with eczema is scratching especially at night, tips like using your prescribed creams and moisturising agents as instructed will help. Ensure you are not too hot in bed, wear loose cotton clothing, try wearing cotton gloves at night to stop scratching and tearing the skin. Antihistamines can also help and be prescribed. Bionic lotion from Neostrata is a good cream for the face if you are prone to eczema or excessive dryness and won't thin or irritate the skin. Also protect your skin with non irritating and sensitive SPF protectors like Cetaphil. Call Michelle for appointments on 07508404862 info@perfect-skin.co.uk /www.perfect-skin.co.uk ■

THE LEADING LADY WORDS BY DEE BROWN

S

trong willed business woman and single mum Tara first visited Smile Design by Ash offering advice on social media. Little did she expect that she would end up in the dentist’s chair. "I was overwhelmed. I had never been afraid of visiting the dentist, but when I first walked into the practice I was amazed. I felt comfortable straight away and knew that Ash would be the man to help transform my smile.” Tara was unhappy with her small looking teeth and dreamed of a wider natural looking smile. "I never used to smile confidently with my mouth open so that you could see my teeth. I had trained myself to grin in photos so I wouldn't have to show them and was often horrified at the result in photos." After a general examination, Ash confirmed that Tara had a very healthy foundation and recommended to maintain her gum health, she should visit the Hygienist Jessica once for professional gum therapy. Ash and Tara then decided to create a beautiful white smile using composite veneers i.e. using white filling material. After a few weeks of whitening and a three-hour appointment with Ash, Tara oozed radiance. "It was the first time I had ever cried at anything. I was so overwhelmed by the result it was the only way I could show how happy I truly was." "I couldn’t believe how comfortable my treatment was, there was no pain at all and I was relaxed throughout my appointment. e service I received from Smile Design by Ash was second to none. I’m over the moon with my smile, so much so that I can’t stop smiling! I constantly recommend Ash and his team, and I now wouldn’t have treatment anywhere other than Smile Design by Ash, it’s been life changing." Since transforming her smile, Tara has ventured off into her own two leading businesses. As a single mother to the adorable Isla-Mae, Tara knows exactly how hard it is to work full time and be a mum, so she set up Dream Bear. Dream Bear is a social network dedicated to single parents offering a support system to help them cope with the day to day reality of bringing their children up single handedly. Also recently nominated as one of Richard Branson’s top ten businesses, we know Dream Bear will be a huge success. Tara also runs Inspiring Media, a company dedicated to supporting businesses with social media requirements.

Derma roller is the ultimate in glowing skin, helps acne scars, uneven skin tone, open pores Dermal filler helps to replace lost volume, facial sagging and lifts out lines and wrinkles Muscle relaxing injections helps to soften expression lines for a fresher more awake look BEFORE

AFTER

I am absolutely delighted with the results that Frances Furlong of Perfect Skin has achieved on my face. I have had a combination of dermal fillers to my cheek area to lift and reshape my face as I felt it looked long and had started to sag after I had lost weight. Also muscle relaxing injections to my frown and crows feet area to make me look less tired! The derma roller sessions have really helped tighten and plump my skin, my pores have now closed too. The derma roller has given me such a renewed tightness to my skin together with using the skincare my skin has never been in such good condition. I am a make up artist and really understand how important the skin quality is when getting make up to look right and all of the treatments I have had really have made a difference to my make up application. I have told all my clients, family and friends about Frances and couldn't recommend her enough! I absolutely love my new defined cheek bones and how it has lifted and opened my eyes. Initially I was so scared of having invasive treatment, we all hear horror stories, but never the ones where so many people get great results and now have boosted confidence about their appearance, and now I would never look back. I couldn’t be without Frances in my life and would never use anyone else. I would be happy to recommend Frances’s work to anybody. angela Pumo

CHANGE IS POSSIBLE ALISON BROWN IS AN EXPERIENCED COUNSELLOR WORKING IN SOUTH WOODFORD AND LEYTONSTONE. A QUALIFIED MEMBER OF THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF COUNSELLORS AND PYSCHOTHERAPISTS, (BACP) SHE IS HERE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE REGARDING A CURRENT DILEMMA YOU MAY BE FACING OR PROBLEM YOU ARE PONDERING: WHAT TYPE OF COUNSELLING DO YOU OFFER? My approach can be described as 'Integrative', which means that I incorporate more than one style or a single way of thinking when working with clients. My primary concern is that I offer a safe space for clients to discuss past hurts and current concerns and to explore possibilities. HOW DID YOU COME TO PRACTICE AS A COUNSELLOR? I originally began my training in counselling in 1992 when I was working as a personal trainer. Numerous clients were struggling with issues relating to their body weight and self image and while exercise and nutritional advice were obviously crucial to creating change, I came to realise that the relationship between mind and body, or indeed the belief system held by the individual was (and is) a key influencing force - hence my move into understanding the mind as well as the body. WHO IS LIKELY TO BENEFIT FROM COUNSELLING? I honestly believe that counselling can be beneficial to anyone who feels drawn to it. If you want to create a change in your circumstances but feel unsure of how to move forward or are unclear about what you it is you actually want - counselling can offer a safe space and a supportive environment in which you move towards healing and perhaps explore new possibilities.

46

JANUARY2014

Over the last 16 years I have been privileged to work with clients who have been living with a vast range of concerns and challenges, including individuals, couples and groups: l Coming to terms with illness and bereavement. l Facing addiction - this includes supporting the family

members affected by someone else's drinking or drug use as well as working with the person struggling with addiction / substance misuse. l Couples Counselling - May involve exploring ways of

improving communication and trust within a relationship, or working towards creating change or acceptance. It can be useful to couples facing life changes such as marriage, birth, job / health challenges, parenting issues and separation. l Stress Management - which may include using the sessions

to 'decompress' , but also to explore current and alternative coping strategies. Email your concern for publication to: alisonbrown-formindandbodymatters@outlook.com (personal / identifying details will not be printed) Or, for an appointment call 07957 318 320 or 020 8529 4845 n

WHY WE CHOOSE INVISALIGN FROM BLUEBELL

RIMY THANDI TV PRESENTER FOR BRIT-ASIA/MODEL/HOST Started Treatment: Sept ‘13 Rimy’s Story “I started Invisalign because I had a gap between my two front teeth. As I spend a lot of time in front of the camera I was becoming more conscious so decided to go ahead with treatment. It's only been six weeks so I haven't seen a difference yet but I am excited to see the end results. e aligners themselves are unnoticeable to everyone I meet which is great. ey took a few weeks to get used to but now I am quite comfortable with them and am able to speak clearly with them in”.

ALISHA JOSEPH PA Started Treatment: May’13 Alisha’s Story “I was lucky enough to win my Invisalign treatment in a recent competition run by Bluebell to mark their 10th anniversary.I have always been very self-conscious about my teeth, as they are uneven and the front two cross over – and big metal braces in my late 20's are not something that appeal to me! Even early into my treatment, I noticed a big difference. My two front teeth are already no longer crossed over – and are almost completely straightened out! I honestly cannot believe how quickly this change has happened – and I LOVE it! I’m smiling more already”.

AMBER ZAKRZEWSKI MISS ESSEX 2012 Completed Treatment: Jan’ 12 Amber’s Story “Invisalign ticked all the boxes for me. Even halfway through the treatment, I felt so much better about my teeth and smile – which was perfect timing as I was entering Miss Essex 2012. I wore the aligners throughout the competition and my speech was never affected even when I spoke on stage. I went on to win the competition, going on to the Miss England 2012 final. Overall my Invisalign was well worth the cost, the time and even the slight discomfort when putting in new aligners. e treatment has fitted into my lifestyle perfectly.”

Say’s Bluebell’s Dr Suki Shakthi: “ These three cases show the benefits of using Invisalign at different stages of treatment. What comes across is that patients can use the clear aligners knowing they are discreet - because they are virtually invisible – and they make people feel and look better. The treatment has clear benefits when it comes to improving patients’ oral health, as it reduces problems like overcrowding, while also boosting people’s confidence.” Bluebell Dental Practice, 140 Tomswood Hill, Essex, IG6 2QP Tel: 0208 500 6789

he new home, which replaces an existing home has been designed with respect for it’s surroundings. The new design steps down with the fall of the site and uses the level change in conjunction with the modularisation of the house to create intimate internal areas which echo the topographical context of the site. The design by Nicolas Tye Architects features white render, timber louvres and elegant glazing systems that encourage to blur the division between inside and out. Careful consideration was given to the choice of construction materials, using locally sourced materials, the architects also went as far as specifying natural paints and stains, both internally and externally. In keeping with it’s design philosophy, heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling systems were also specified to provide an energy efficient and environmentally friendly scheme. This exquisite building of high quality design and architecture has been created to form a fresh, modern single dwelling what respects the nature of the area and brings a coherent layout integrated with the site while presenting a modern yet timeless design concept.

Pre-patinated green copper shingles and plain copper singles Full-length glass windows bringing you views of the surrounding woodland areas A South facing morning room to make the most of the morning sun The design of the house is derived from a simple concept for example; chronological order of events when getting to the house Individual balconies to bedrooms at first floor level have glass balustrades and treated pine timber decking The underfloor heating throughout the whole house enables flexibility furniture arrangement without restriction Sophisticated home automation system enables the security system, lighting and heating system to be operated remotely Siberian Larch timber cladding A white rendered EPS system at lower level Air source heat pumps for heating and comfort cooling Sedum roof to lower roofs for biodiversity Central to our philosophy is that design is generated by the needs of people, regardless of size or scale of the design opportunity. We actively encourage our clients to consider sustainability, environmental issues and using natural, healthy materials where possible. Nicolas Tye

THE AUDI A5 SPORTBACK HAS IT ALL

N

o other car has brought together functionality and style in such large measure as the iconic Audi A5 Sportback. e car’s wide, low stance, sleek silhouette and long elegant lines make it one of the most attractive models in the premium executive class, which since its 2009 launch, it has so effortlessly dominated. Yet the Audi design team’s true masterstroke was in giving a model that has been described in the motoring press as a “visual masterpiece,” such an astonishingly spacious interior. Inside the A5 Sportback, five adults can be accommodated in sumptuous comfort, with more than ample room for luggage. And with the added convenience of the fifth door tailgate, this versatile model

seems to have achieved the impossible by combining luxury coupé appeal with a very substantial estate car capacity of up to 1283 litres with the rear seats folded! e A5 Sportback is also as fuel efficient as it is practical. Latest models are available with a choice of 1.8 litre 170PS or 2.0 litre 225PS petrol engines that deliver 48 and 47 plus mpg respectively on the EU cycle. Diesel variants are even more efficient with the 2.0 TDI achieving an incredible

64.2 mpg and the seriously fast 245PS 3.0 TDI still returning 49.6 mpg – despite its 155 mph top speed! e result is an astonishing all-rounder which offers big driver benefits on so many levels. Essex Audi Corporate Sales Manager Steve Lawrence sums it up: “I firmly believe that the latest Audi A5 is unique. is superb car is not only visually stunning but it delivers five-seater practicality, estate car functionality, luxury car equipment and astonishing fuel efficiency – it really should be at the top of every car buyers short list.” For more information on any aspect of Audi cars or to book a test drive in any model in the Audi range, please contact your nearest Essex Audi Group Centre, details of which can be found at www.Essex-Audi.co.uk ■

THE RIGHT TIME TO EXPAND

P

etty Son And Prestwich have announced they are expanding their business by opening a second branch in Buckhurst Hill having put together a team of people who between them have an astonishing 60 years’ experience between them Jenny Wagstaff, Jenny West and Catherine Bransgrove have individually all managed branches successfully for many years and are coming together making a formidable team. e director John Wagstaff said “ e time felt right to expand as we were selling more and more properties outside our core area. Wanstead and Buckhurst Hill are quite similar in many ways and we found a lovely spot at the top of Queens round surrounded by independent shops, bistros and attractive houses, It just felt right. We have worked hard over the last five years to become the most successful estate agent in Wanstead and now it’s time to set our sights a little further afield. We are now able to help our sellers in Wanstead, South Woodford, Leytonstone and these areas who are looking to move along the M11 corridor and are looking for a home in Buckhurst Hill, Loughton or Woodford Green. e two offices should complement each other nicely. e majority of the team we have now are extremely experienced with six out of eleven being at manager or senior manager level. is means that whenever you contact either office you will be dealt with by a quality individual who will be able to give you what you need in terms of advice, guidance or assistance of any kind. www.pettyson.co.uk n
