HOMEGLAZE CHARITY CHALLENGE BEGINS

omeglaze, your local double glazing specialist in Chigwell, is celebrating 5 years in business with a partnership with children’s charity Barnardo’s to raise £10,000 over the next 12

months. is month the team is planning a fundraising challenge that will test their fitness and stamina and take a week to achieve. ey plan to get over the finish line during the day on Saturday 21st November. Team Homeglaze will be rowing the English Channel – Dover to Calais – a distance of 26 miles. But instead of the wind and the water the challenge will play out in the Gravel Lane showroom over 13 hours during the week as each man rows in the virtual challenge. Company Director Colin Morgan says “is is our first fundraising venture. We will all challenge ourselves and each other to make sure we are on course. It’s going to be a long, hard week so on Saturday we plan to celebrate success.” e company would like people to make a donation in support of the challenge at https://www.justgiving.com/homeglaze Of course it will still be business as usual at the family owned and run home improvement company as they continue to maintain their high standards away from the rowing machine. Choosing to raise money for Barnardo’s means it will be channelled into the charity’s work with children leaving care in Redbridge. ese children will have been taken into care for a number of reasons and are highly vulnerable. eir problems are made worse by the number of moves many of them are forced to make during their time in care, which can also seriously disrupt their education. • Young care leavers show significantly lower academic achievement than their peers – just 11% of children in care gain five GCSEs compared to the national average of over 60%.

• Care leavers are more likely to be unemployed, to become homeless and to spend time in prison. • One in seven young people leaving care are pregnant or already mothers. Barnardo’s supports the transition from Care to independent living, with follow on services providing skills, knowledge and access to one-to-one advice. It also includes access to supported lodgings, help getting a job Barnardo’s Reg. Charity Nos. 216250 & SC037605 and on the Job Training. Colin knows about being in care as he found himself there at just 10 years old. As the years went by he was moved several times and eventually left to make his own way in life. Football was Colin’s salvation. Playing for his school and the district helped him cope even though a life of hard knocks was to follow. e company also sponsors boys under 7 and under 14 football teams at two local schools. e link with Barnardo’s may bring back memories but it’s all about what is being done now for vulnerable youngsters. Barnardo’s Care Leaver services worked with 2,900 people last year. Support for the Homeglaze team for their fundraising challenges is crucial. n

his year, why not avoid the hustle and bustle of the commercial high streets and instead head out into the wilds of Epping Forest to have some festive fun and wrap up your Christmas shopping all in one?

RAYLEIGH MOUNT H idden away behind the high street of an Essex town lies a small National Trust site that few people know, called Rayleigh Mount. Today it is just a peaceful hill covered in trees and grass, but in medieval times it was the castle of the Sheriﬀ of Essex and Hertfordshire, Sweyn, son of Robert Fitzwimarc. It was the only Essex castle mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086! Nothing at all remains of the motte and bailey castle now. It was built of timber, as were most of the early Norman castles, and seems to have narrowly missed two opportunities to later become a stone castle. What stone was brought onto the site by Sweyn’s grandson appears to have been robbed out in the late fourteenth century to build the handsome church tower at the head of the high street. e whole site is less than five acres, so it doesn’t take long to walk around, and there are interpretive panels explaining its history. ere is also a nature trail. Nearby is Rayleigh Windmill (the tallest remaining in Essex) and the curious, octagonal, thatched roofed Dutch cottage. If you come on a Wednesday morning there is a thriving market in the high street. ere is no entry charge for Rayleigh Mount. During the winter (Greenwich Mean Time) it is open Sunday to Friday 7am to 4pm, and Saturdays 7am to 2pm. However, it may occasionally be closed on very windy or icy and snowy days for safety reason. Lane (use the postcode SS6 7ED for sat. nav. purposes), where there is a pay and display car park. It is also very close to Rayleigh railway station – on the London Liverpool street to Southend Victoria line – just a ten minute walk up Castle Drive, opposite the station, to the rear entrance of the Mount. If you do visit, you will be treading in the footsteps of Kings and Queens. For apart from the castle, there was once a royal forest at Rayleigh and monarchs from Henry II, through to bad King John and even Henry VIII arrived to hunt deer. Queen Eleanor of Castile, consort to Edward I, even established a royal horse stud there (a sort of medieval equivalent of a modern day Rolls Royce factory). So, this small town has a big history. ere are green plaques to look out for, too, on a number of the buildings in the town centre, giving additional snippets of information about Rayleigh’s past. Additional information if required: Castle built about 1070 as a simple motte (hill) castle. Later expended to a motte and bailey castle by Sweyn’s grandson, Henry of Essex. In all the 300 years it stood on the site it was never attacked. Eventually it was abandoned, and the site became farmland. It was given to the National Trust by Edward Francis in 1923 and, at that time was managed for the Trust by a small committee of local people. All these years later it is still managed by a local committee – one of the few remaining National Trust properties to continue such an arrangement. n

It’s ‘hands on’ and all about having fun while learning new skills. Art teacher Adelaine Frank has a passion to bring art to the fingertips of those interested in teasing out their own creativity. e class has the added benefit of tutor Jim Jack, a sculptor and local artist. Both tutors provide one-to-one advice and all the help needed to develop those individual artistic skills. Classes are lively and fun.

A FINE TASTE OF THE FOREST

For the first time, Epping Forest is selling venison to the public from The View.

pping Forest is a unique and ancient woodland, some 12 miles long from Manor Park in the south to Epping in the north. Within the Forest, fallow deer and muntjac deer roam freely and are a delight to visitors lucky enough to spot a glimpse of these beautiful and wild creatures. Back in the 1950s, concerned by declining numbers of deer within the Forest, the City of London Corporation, as Conservators of Epping Forest, created a Deer Sanctuary to ensure that this important species was protected. Since this time, and despite increasing pressures of development around the borders of the Forest, the deer population has thrived and the Conservators now have to carefully and humanely manage the deer population to continue to best protect Epping Forest - much of which is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. Sustainably managing the deer also helps to prevent a drop in the condition of the deer themselves due to over-population. As a result, the City of London are now oﬀering Epping Forest venison for sale at the Epping Forest Visitor Centre, e View (Rangers Road, Chingford). Visitors can be assured of the provenance and quality of this locally-reared meat, which has been produced from deer free to roam within the Deer Sanctuary in eydon Bois. You can be sure of not just a fine taste, but of high animal welfare standards. e culling of the deer is rigorously controlled

and only specified numbers are culled each year. Furthermore, the money generated from the sale of Epping Forest venison will go straight back into protecting the Forest, which is a Registered Charity. Superintendent of Epping Forest, Paul omson, said: “As venison is one of the lowest cholesterol red meats, with very little fat, we hope that this locally reared meat will be enjoyed by the local community as a genuine and delicious taste of Epping Forest.” Also on sale at e View is ‘Venison, e Game Larder‘ by Jose Souto, the perfect recipe book to give inspiration for putting the venison to good use. To celebrate the launch of Epping Forest venison sales, Butler’s Retreat, the Café next door to e View, will be hosting a Venison Supper with author, Jose Souto. What is your target and who are the charities? Ash: I believe that with help I can raise £20,000 in 6 months to be shared between two charities. I am a great supporter of local charity Haven House Children's Hospice www.havenhouse.org.uk based in Woodford Green. It supports families and cares for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions across North and North East London, West Essex and East Hertfordshire. I am also a Trustee of Food for Life Vrindavan (FFLV) www.ﬄvrindavan.org, which was established in 1990. e charity is based in the historical city of Vrindavan, two hours away from Delhi, and provides education, food distribution, medical services, social development, clothing and a better environment for the poorest of the poor. Why? Ash: I am grateful to be blessed with a successful career, loving family and all the creature comforts I need. I know I have the capacity and support network to raise money that will change lives and I want to give back to those less well oﬀ. What do you find special about Haven House? Ash: Haven House is a well-run charity that does impressive work with children and their families facing huge emotional and physical demands with little support.

e hospice provides respite care for the children, enabling their carers to have a much-needed break, and also provides end-of-life care at the appropriate time. e hospice needs to raise £3.6 million in 2015-2016 to continue to provide a wide range of services that support families and make children smile.

Why is FFLV in India close to your heart? Ash: As a practising Hindu I hold Vrindavan to be one of the holiest cities in India. It is famed as the region where the Hindu Deity Krishna manifest his pastimes 5,000 years ago.. Food for Life Vrindavan is a fantastic charity where up to 3,000 children and women receive support , food and medical care regardless of their background or religious beliefs. When does the fundraising start? Ash: We have already started! A MIDLIFE CRISIS or an Awakening?

ur lives are generally measured in decade milestones. I still recall my 10th birthday and how adult I felt that my age was now in double figures. Losing your teens at twenty, feeling you should be responsible at thirty and then ancient at forty. I won’t even elaborate on thoughts at fifty… Our perceptions of how we’ll be at a certain age, our naïve expectations in our youth as compared to the realities when a dreaded age looms; we aspire and plan for our goals but life gets in the way and sometimes what we had envisaged as an ideal, is not always what we really wanted. As a child, I never imagined life beyond getting married and having children. e proverbial ‘happy ever after’ heralded the destiny rather than an interlude. erefore I never planned or had any idea beyond that point. As each birthday highlighted another year older and worse still, another bracket for tick box exercises, it all begun to feel rather ageist and dire. So I asked myself: “Do you want to find out who you might have been?” Started a diet… Imagined how I would like to look and took time to work out a plan and if I achieved my goal – what car would I like? After a moment’s hesitation and a wry smile – it was obvious: a convertible sports car. So is this a midlife crisis or an awakening? Who cares? I read all the reviews about the newly designed Mazda MX-5 and decided it’s now or never. Mazda state they have created Jinba-lttai: at one with the car. I wondered… Four months later and four stone lighter, Mazda were 2 8 NOVEMBER 2015

absolutely right. With the roof down and Donna Summer singing (at high volume) ‘Could It Be Magic’ or any other 80s disco music - the A406 and even traffic on the M25 never felt so good. e car is a dream… every aspect of the new design, functionality and purpose puts this car into an elite league of its own. It feels like a race horse and you can’t help smiling. Aside my children and work as a writer, I can’t recall feeling this euphoric or excited about anybody or anything. It’s a 5 star car. Affectionately referred to as e Batmobile (as black) and I am the Essex Catwoman. Midlife crisis or awakening? Absolutely it’s an awakening to the abandonment that maturity affords you when you’re still young at heart and feel that you’re never too old to savour the experience of a new thrill or adventure. n My car was purchased via the Mazda office at Romford who were absolutely fantastic. he stars of the London store’s window displays are twelve windows on Oxford Street which feature the 12 signs of the zodiac. Presented in a highly stylised way, each window references the relevant planets influencing the zodiac signs. Selfridges’ Journey to the Stars scheme was over a year in development, with the London window displays alone taking over 500 people to set up and the in-store decorations over 30,000 hours to install. he National Gallery houses the national collection of paintings in the Western European tradition from the 13th to the 19th centuries and admission to see them is free. In 2004 the National Gallery acquired Carracci’s The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist (on display in Room 37), thanks to a number of donations and gifts in wills. In this painting the Madonna seems about to rise to greet the viewer, as she balances her baby on her lap, her wide-eyed gaze drawing us into the picture. Saint Joseph and the Infant Saint John the Baptist respond to the lively child with focused attentiveness.

Winter Run returns to London with an even cooler route for 2016

he Cancer Research UK Winter Run is returning to London for 2016 and is bigger and better than ever before. The 2015 sellout event which saw 15,000 runners hit the streets, is bringing back the much loved Polar Bear hugs, and a cool new route will see runners enjoying this unique closed-road event where they will pass some of the most iconic landmarks the city has to offer with masses of winter fun and surprises thrown in for good measure. The 10k flat route event, will start in the history steeped Trafalgar Square, where the winter fun will kick off in style with a brand new feature – Snow BlastOff! Which will start each wave of runners with an explosion of snow forming an arch over them as they head off for more winter fun. Runners will head off along The Strand, past the world famous Novello and Aldwych Theatres, before heading further into the City of London, past the Royal Courts of Justice, through the beautiful Guildhall Yard and towards the ‘The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street’ also known as The Bank of England. At some point along this route they will be transported into a winter wonderland when they enter the giant Snow Zone, which this year boasts six huge cannons, showering runners with snow. Continuing, runners will be treated to breath-taking sights of St Pauls Cathedral before heading back into Westminster and towards the famous Downing Street, where the Polar Bears and his friends will be waiting to

give out warm friendly hugs. The course will entertain not only the runners, st but also the families and friends who come out to show their support – don’t worry though, there will be enough winter fun to keep everybody’s spirits up. This unique event is the perfect opportunity for people of all levels of fitness to come out of Christmas hibernation and start the New Year with a bang, whilst raising money for Cancer Research UK. The Cancer Research UK Winter Run is organised by Human Race – the UK’s largest organiser of running, cycling and triathlon events.

In England, we are fortunate to have many vaccinations given on the NHS although they are not always available to all patients. is article discusses the common vaccinations and highlights when you may be entitled to them on the NHS. Meningitis can cause serious illness in babies and children. It has many types with the most frequent being Meningitis B; unfortunately, there has not been a vaccine for this until recently. All babies born after 1st May 2015 will now be given the Meningitis B vaccination (Bexsero) as part of the NHS childhood vaccination schedule. It is a course of three vaccinations given at 2, 4 and 12 months. However, there is no catch up programme for children born prior to this date. In addition, due to the increase in Meningitis W cases, the Meningitis ACWY vaccination has now replaced the Meningitis C vaccination for young adults and those travelling abroad. Chicken Pox is a common childhood illness and usually resolves completely with only minor symptoms. It can however infrequently lead to severe complications in some children and especially adults. e chicken pox vaccination (Varivax) is not oﬀered on the NHS childhood vaccination schedule. It is only oﬀered on the NHS to people who are in close contact with someone who is vulnerable to chicken pox or its complications. It is given as two separate vaccines 4-6 weeks apart to any person over the age of one year. Shingles is a painful, blistering skin condition which often leads to chronic and recurrent pain. Although the shingles vaccine (Zostavax) is licensed in any person above 50 years of age, the financial constraints of the NHS means that your GP can

currently only oﬀer you the vaccine if you are 70, 71, 78 or 79 years of age. e vaccine will reduce your chances of getting shingles or make the symptoms milder and the illness shorter. You will also be less likely to get complications of shingles such as post herpetic neuralgia. e shingles vaccine is only given once. As discussed in our last editorial, the Flu & Pneumonia vaccinations are only given to NHS patients above 65 years of age and to those below 65 years with certain medical conditions. However, even in healthy individuals, there is benefit from gaining immunity from a disease which can cause inconvenience, time oﬀ work and spread to vulnerable members of the family. e flu vaccine can be given to any person over the age of six months and depending on the age, vaccinations are administered by nasal spray or injection. It is available until January 2016. All these immunisations can be given by our Doctors in the comfort of your home. SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD) AND THE WINTER BLUES WITH FRANCES FURLONG

easonal Aﬀective Disorder or (SAD) is a form of depression that people experience at a particular time of year. It is normal to feel more cheerful and energetic when the sun is shining and the days are longer, or to find that you eat more or sleep longer in winter. However, if you experience SAD, the change in seasons will have a much greater aﬀect on your mood and energy levels, and lead to symptoms of depression that have a significant impact on your day-to-day life.

What are the common signs of SAD in the winter months?

• Lack of energy for everyday tasks, such as studying or going to work; • Concentration problems; • Sleep problems; • Depression - feeling sad, low, tearful, guilty, like you have let others or yourself down; • Anxiety - tenseness and inability to cope with everyday stresses; • Panic attacks; • Mood changes - in some people, bursts of hyperactivity; • Overeating - particularly craving carbohydrates and putting on weight; • Being more prone to illness - some people with SAD may have a lowered immune system during the winter.

Ways to Help

• Daily exercise and exposure to sunlight, particularly at midday, can help alleviate Seasonal Aﬀective Disorder, it may feel cold out but wrap up and go for a brisk walk at lunch time! Try to go to the gym or go for a run to boost serotonin and endorphins - the happy cocktail. • Deficiency in Vitamin B12 can result in a host of illnesses like anaemia, fatigue, depression, it is also needed to convert carbohydrates into glucose in the body, which in turn creates more energy and less fatigue and lethargy in the body. It can be taken orally or by Injection as a health shot. • Working in an oﬃce also undermines our ability to build up the reserves needed to get through the winter because even at the height of summer there are only four hours a day from 11am to 3pm when it is bright enough to make Vitamin D. So taking a Vitamin D supplement and adding Vitamin D rich foods like fatty fish, tuna, mackerel and salmon, beef liver, cheese and egg yolks as well as foods fortified with Vitamin D. PARTY HAIR AND MAKE-UP Party make-up has to be right if you want to look beautiful at Christmas. The key to looking great for your Christmas party is to put on your eye shadow first. Then apply your foundation and any other makeup you want to wear. This way you know that any loose eye shadow won’t fall in those places you don’t want it. Nothing says Christmas more than glitter, and slathering some sparkly goodness on your pout will definitely bring you some Christmas cheer. To master the look, line your lips with a light coloured lip pencil and add foundation to the corners of your mouth. Then apply a creamy lipstick using a lip brush before using a flat brush to add on your glitter. You can finish with a gloss. To glam up your lips even more, add some clear lip gloss. The one thing to bear in mind if you’re considering having glittery lips for a Christmas do is that drinking, eating and kissing may be off limits; so weigh up your priorities before donning a glitter pout! Christmas is such a frantic time that it can be difficult to find the energy to fuss over hairstyles. Yet if you want to look fantastic then one of the best beauty tips you can master is the art of simple hairdos. If you want to put your hair up, try twisting one section from the front of your hair; once twisted pin into place at the back of your head. Repeat with the other side. Then take the remainder of your hair and tie a messy bun. This look is elegant, simple and more importantly quick. COMBAT ALCOHOL Although you may like sipping a tasty mojito or cosmopolitan, your skin doesn’t. Alcohol dehydrates you and can leave your skin dry, grey and dull. To make sure your skin glows despite the endless flow of alcohol over the festive period your moisturiser won’t be enough. Instead

invest in some cleansing milks that contain hylauronic acid. You could also apply a brightening face mask; look for ones that contain alphahydroxy acids, as this natural acid helps to destroy dead skin skills, firm up skin and moisturise.

TIRED EYES All those nights partying is bound to leave even young eyes looking tired. To make sure you stay looking bright and alert over Christmas give yourself a little eye massage to get rid of puffy eyes. Begin at the corner of one of your eyes and work your way up, between your brow bone and your eye, rubbing as you go until you reach the outer edge of your eye. Repeat along your lower lash line. Also, be careful about where you apply your blusher as applying it too high can make you look tired. FLAT STOMACH For most of us, a flat, washboard stomach is like the elixir of life - a distant, priceless dream that will never become a reality. Yet we have a few tricks that might make that flat tummy achievable. Firstly, try taking peppermint capsules or aloe vera juice. Each do a fantastic job in supporting the digestive system and both can help you achieve a flat stomach by preventing bloating. So that you can look amazing in your Christmas outfit, you can also cut out certain foods that can cause excessive gas and bloating. Try to limit things that contain refined sugar, or fermented products like cheese... and alcohol!
