Children are due to break up for their summer holidays and most parents have set aside time oﬀ work to be with their family. e schools’, six weeks break is a long time outside of a normal routine and knowing how to juggle commitments is not always easy. However we live in Essex (part from Wanstead and South Woodford which have London postcodes!) but essentially – we’re all in the same vicinity and Essex is truly a wonderful place. Only a few of us will be away for the full six weeks – mainly it’s two or a maximum of three but with a massive selection of choices, venues and activities to help us ﬁll those other weeks, I have carefully researched a wealth of information in order to make my recommendations. Hopefully, just some of these ideas might help ease the pain of: “Mummmm…. Dadddddd…. I’m bored! What we doing and where are we going today?” However, help is at hand! Most of us have only ever watched the Olympics on television. A lucky few have perhaps gone to the games in some exotic city. Even luckier are those who have tickets for the Olympics here in London!

THE TORCH RELAY WILL BE AS FOLLOWS: Starting at Redbridge Cycling Centre* on Sunday, 22nd July at 7.19 a.m. before transit to: ● Fairlop Waters* ● Fullwell Cross ● Gants Hill ● Past Valentine’s Mansion ● Ilford Town Centre and into Ilford Lane. 12

Speaking to Vincent Goode of Speedprint in Gants Hill, he commented: “Gants Hill has had some high proﬁle exposure in recent years; Boris Johnson opening the area after the two year regeneration plan, e Queen visiting the area this year as part of her diamond jubilee tour and this summer, Gants Hill is being rewarded again as the Olympic Torch relay procession will be coming right through the area and importantly for me, right past my shop!” With a prime location right on the roundabout, he certainly will be a key witness to all the action that happens at Gants Hill.

REDBRIDGE COUNCIL HAVE ALSO ORGANISED THE BOROUGH’S CELEBRATIONS WHICH INCLUDE MANY EXCITING EVENTS. Twenty-six torchbearers will be carrying the ﬂame through Redbridge including Luke Williams, a teacher from Wanstead. David Backhouse from Ilford (Governor at Mayﬁeld School). 12 year old Jess Archard: talented sports star from Woodford Green and also Grace Boxall, from Buckhurst Hill. What better reason to be up early, perky and ready for some Olympic action. Redbridge Council have also

organised the Borough’s celebrations which include many exciting events. Entitled: ‘Rise and Shine Redbridge’, festivities include early morning sports, cultural displays including a dawn chorus, a massive Tai Chi display plus breakfast barbecues. en onto Havering and Bexley for some exciting, evening celebrations. In addition, Redbridge are hosting the Inspiration Roadshow 2012. e Olympic and Paralympic Games will be coming to Redbridge! From June to September, there will be opening and closing ceremonies, performances and sports taster sessions. Opportunities for ‘Olympic’ stars to sign autographs; an Inspiration Decathlon, with gold, silver and bronze winners competing in 10 diﬀerent Games-Inspired events and other activities which will include hula-hooping to impersonating Olympic stars.

So let us all enjoy the Olympics either as a spectator at the event itself, peripheral activities or via our televisions. History is being made and the world will be looking at us. Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET TRUST ME I’M AN ESTATE AGENT ! Well surprise surprise, after years of holding the popular vote of being the last trusted of any trade or profession, Estate Agency has recently moved several places down the table of the reviled. Now my fellow agents and friends, let’s not get too excited. We may have been overtaken by the Bankers, Insurance Salesmen, Car Salesmen, e Media, Pharmaceutical Companies and the old bogey men (and women) the Politicians and Landed Gentry, but we have a long way to go to move from the table of reviled to the table of revered. Believe it or not, back in the mid 1960’s when (as a mere child) I entered this profession, numerous property owners were so distrustful of Agents that they chose to advertise their homes for sale “privately” in the classified columns of the local rag. Going as far as to end their usually poorly worded and badly displayed advertisement with the words “NO AGENTS”! In fact it was at the time of the first credit squeeze, as it was then called, in the mid to late 1960’s, that encouraged these overly cautious and distrusting sellers to capitulate and call in their friendly local agent (as I was known) and ask for help. Knowing full well that without an agent’s assistance in arranging the necessary finance, their sale had little chance of going through. BUT WHAT OF TODAY? Home owners advertising privately are as rare as “Hen’s teeth”. One reason may be

because the canny seller is well aware of the huge cost of marketing and the realisation that if the property does not sell it costs them nothing, and if it does sell it really is the buyer who pays, as in the seller’s mind they have calculated the costs of selling within the agreed price. Instructing an Agent to sell your home thereby becoming a “no brainer” decision. inking back I can distinctly remember several owners saying (before they hung up the phone or closed the door in my face) they believed agents deliberately undervalue property in order to earn a quick buck. Accusing them of either buying the property themselves through a third party, or ﬂogging it to one of their mates.

HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED Today far too many agents of little experience or training, are canvassing the books of agents such as myself, by quoting ridiculously high valuations and oﬀering to take the property on at a commission that would barely equal my marketing costs for each property. ese are probably the most testing times for anyone selling and buying that we have experienced since those early days of the 1960’s. Quality homes are few and far between, mortgages, although becoming a little easier, still carry stringent terms and criteria, and those who are ready willing and able to buy are driving a very hard bargain quoting “Cash is King”. It is in such times that the serious seller should think carefully before selecting an agent to handle their most valuable possession. Today, more than ever before, my late mother’s saying of “cheap is dear” could get up and bite those seeking a cheap option. ONE FURTHER WORD OF ADVICE Having chosen your agent,

stick to your choice and be patient. Marketing periods are now generally twice as long as in the heady days of 2006/7. As long as you see that your agent is putting every effort in to promoting your property for sale with an encouraging description on a wide selection of websites with continuous (not just one off ) media advertising, a buyer will eventually be found. I have personally experienced this when selling my erstwhile home in North London. Having taken great care in choosing my sole agent last January, and agreeing a generous commission with them, the property eventually received offers only last week from two buyers. One of which, having received a reduction of 4% from the asking price set seven months ago, duly exchanged contracts to purchase within 14 hours from the time their solicitors received the papers. e seven months with no offers and little action having proved well worth the wait. e serious sellers Motto for the quality home being three “P’s” - No not…. “Position, Position, Position”,…but Promotion, Perseverance and Patience. EVENTS AT OAk-TrEE SchOOlS NORMANHURST SCHOOL’S PRIZE GIVING AND RT HON IAIN DUNCAN SMITH MP On Friday 6 July the Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP, Member of Parliament for Chingford and Woodford Green and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, made time in his busy schedule for Normanhurst School’s end of year Prize Giving and Speech Day held at the Chingford Assembly Hall. School Managing Principal Matthew Hagger welcomed some 450 pupils, parents, staff and friends of Normanhurst School to the event and introduced guest speaker Iain Duncan Smith MP who gave an insight into life in politics. His main message centred around the importance of family and making lifelong friends, which was appropriate given the well-known family ethos in evidence at Normanhurst. Mr Duncan Smith also commended the school for its achievements, especially producing such an outstanding array of GCSE results. With over 100 cups, shields and certificates awarded to pupils from Reception to Year 11, Mr Duncan Smith took the time to speak to all of the prize winners to ensure that each was congratulated appropriately in front of a packed audience. Many pupils also won national awards, which were celebrated with pride. Headmistress Claire Osborn took the opportunity to thank the staff and parents for their considerable support over the year. She also paid tribute to the pupils’ ‘can do’ attitude to learning, so evident in their GCSE results. Joyce Kuhns was another notable guest and the oldest poppy seller in the UK when she celebrated her 100th birthday on 12th June. Joyce, a great grandmother, had family who served in both world wars and introduced her to the Royal British Legion. Joyce ﬁrst visited the Cenotaph in London’s Whitehall when it was a temporary structure erected for a peace parade following the end of World War One.

s summer approaches (allegedly!) despite the flood warnings and absolute lack of sunshine, we plan our holidays, trips abroad, respite from the daily grind and important time with family and friends. Having neighbours to keep an eye on our home and possessions, is all part of the care we share with those in our immediate vicinity. We watch their homes – they watch ours. Working together with community spirit benefits us all. Ensuring that letters are pushed through letter-boxes, picking up parcels left outside vacant homes. For most of us, this is just part of daily life. We do for others and hope they will do for us with equal generosity. But being part of a community is more than just basic assistance – it’s how we also help each other within our professional sphere, with our different talents and skills that facilitate others to reap rewards. e people we hold close, with whom we do business and whose lives, somehow weave within our

own as important relationships are developed and friendships are enhanced through mutual respect. Last week, my sister Helena, called for urgent help. My niece Minna was in agony. For anybody who has experienced the anguish and pain caused by a wisdom tooth meriting an extraction will sympathise. Excruciating pain that could not be controlled, Helena was desperate for help and had already pleaded with Minna’s dentist for an urgent appointment. Oﬀered the next appointment, three weeks later, she was distraught. Did I know somebody who could help? Immediately, I emailed Ash. Ash and I both work late and I knew that if he was online – I would have an immediate response. I did. Without hesitation he promised to assist and recommended an urgent call (the following morning) to his practice in order to make an appointment. True to his promise, Ash made time to see Minna, despite his back-to-back appointments. X-Rays were taken and his professional decision was to immediately remove the tooth.

Minna went white with fear. A veteran anxious-patient, she was scared. But Ash through his naturally, very caring disposition, assured her she wouldn’t feel any pain. I know he is particularly concerned about anxious patients and has many processes in place which ensure they are comfortable and potentially, may even enjoy their treatments. With a music system which has every song imaginable as part of the software, he gently placed the headphones on her head and Minna shut her eyes. Rihanna would take her elsewhere as she listened to the music… Within minutes - tooth removed… PAIN GONE. Where there had been tears of pain – were replaced with tears of relief and joy. is ‘wonderful man’ as he’s now referred to by my family, was chivalrous, kind and despite his own schedule and commitments, made time to care for a desperate young woman who needed help. By helping others – we also help ourselves. It is my pleasure to tell the world, he’s a great dentist, a caring humanitarian and a wonderful family man. Local media help us to learn more about our community and in this respect, Patrick Smith (Fish Media Group) oﬀers a literary voice and presence to our readership. Telling somebody of a good deed goes so far. Publishing,

promoting and distributing high-quality magazines which are respected by the local readership, is an important role and helps us all, to keep in touch. We all have stories where we have been helped. It’s the gestures that matter and are never forgotten. How somebody touches us in a special way because they were there when we needed them and without hesitation or any thought of personal benefit, make that extra effort which underpins a relationship. Robert is English, Kim is American and they farm in what was the most unlikely of places to winegrowers at the time. As the ﬁrst non-French owners of a Domaine they quickly distinguished themselves by their experience and strong pioneering spirit. Robert had been in the wine trade in Oxford eventually going on to make wine at some prestigious wineries in California. Kim had worked

for ten years in Napa also in California. Together they had a dream of making their own wine in France. ere are floral notes with some citric fruit (lemon and lime). It’s fresh and round on the palate with some body, weight and a lengthy finish. It also comes in a scrummy rose too. Domaine De Saumerez, Fleur De Liz 2011, Vin De Pays De L’Herault £12.00 Just like the white above this Rose is from an area of France that you will be hearing a lot more about. Although they have been growing grapes since Roman times it is only in the last 15-20 years that winemakers have really started getting to grips with the “terroir” that this region has to offer. is wine is a blend of 90% Grenache Noir and 10% Syrah. It is so fresh that is was being bottled on the morning that I collected it, just a few weeks ago! Strawberries, Raspberries and Grenadine on the nose, this wine has a veritable fruit salad going on and with red summer fruits in abundance on the palate, it’s perfect as an aperitif or with light salads as well as slightly spicy Asian dishes.

Both these wines will be available for tasting in store over the weekends of 21st and 28th of July – do pop in. Parducci Pinot Noir, 2009, Mendocino County, California. I have just got a new shipment of beers including German Weihenstephan which is the world’s oldest brewery, dating back to 1040. Yes I couldn’t believe it either. Obviously the current stock is fresher than that as the monks continue to brew their amazing lager. On pouring you will find one of the biggest heads to any beer. Spicy banana, clove underlay the aromas with the maltiness integrating amazingly well. Superb!

The Opening Ceremony The set for the opening scene of the Ceremony, is called ‘Green and Pleasant’. On entry to the Olympic Stadium the audience will see a scene that represents a traditional and idyllic view of the British countryside. The whole of the field of play in the Stadium will be transformed into the rolling British countryside as the London 2012 Ceremonies Team creates one of the largest sets ever built. The set will be complete with meadows, fields and rivers, and featuring families taking picnics, sport being played on the village green and farmers tilling the soil whilst real farmyard animals graze – including 12 horses, 3 cows, 2 goats, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, 9 geese, 70 sheep, and 3 sheep dogs.

VENUES of the 2012 Summer The Aquatics Centre The Aquatics Centre will be the venue for Swimming, Paralympic Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming and the Aquatics discipline of the Modern Pentathlon. Location: South-east corner of the Olympic Park. Number of events: 192. It will be the ‘gateway’ to the Olympic Park, with more than two-thirds of spectators expected to enter the Olympic Park over a vast bridge that runs over the top of part of the venue. After the Games, The Aquatics Centre will be transformed into a facility for the local community, clubs and schools, as well as elite swimmers. The two temporary wings will be removed, although it will be possible to increase the capacity for major competitions. The Aquatics Centre will also have a creche, family-friendly changing facilities and a cafe, alongside a new public plaza in front of the building. The Basketball Arena The Basketball Arena will host Basketball, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby and the final stages of the Handball 34

competition. Location: In the north of the Olympic Park. Number of events: 7. It is one of the largest-ever temporary venues built for any Games. Parts of it are expected to be reused or relocated elsewhere in the UK.

City of Coventry Stadium The Stadium is home to Championship club Coventry City. It is ideally located in the centre of England, in a city which already has strong links with London 2012. The stadium will play host to 12 Football matches, including the women’s bronze medal match. After the Games, the stadium will continue to host Coventry City matches

Brands Hatch During the London 2012 Paralympic Games, the Road Cycling discipline will be held at Brands Hatch, home of numerous international racing events. Both the Road Race and Time Trial events will be held at the venue. The riders will race round a course that passes through the Kent

Earls Court In 2012, Earls Court will be transformed into a spectacular Volleyball arena ready for the Games. The Volleyball competition will have 288 athletes taking part, with the action beginning on 28th July. Earls Court is close to the Victoria and Albert, Science & Natural History Museums. After the Games, the venue will continue as one of London’s best exhibition and event spaces.

Olympics and Paralympics Eton Dorney, Berkshire Eton Dorney will be the venue for Rowing, Paralympic Rowing, and Canoe Sprint events, during the London 2012 Games. Eton Dorney Rowing Centre at Dorney Lake, is a world-class venue near Windsor Castle. Number of events: 30. The venue is a 2,200m, eight-lane rowing course with a separate return lane constructed to international standards. It is set in a 400-acre park with a nature conservation area. In 2006, it hosted the Rowing World Championships, with high praise from both competitors and spectators.

Eton Manor The sporting facilities at Eton Manor will be the venue for Wheelchair Tennis. Location: In the north of the Olympic Park. Number of events: 6. Eton Manor will have temporary training pools for participants in Aquatics events. It will have three 50m pools for swimmers, and smaller pools for synchronised swimmers and Water Polo players. It will then host Wheelchair Tennis during the Paralympic Games, and remain a training facility for Aquatics

competitors. After the Games, It is intended that Eton Manor will be transformed into a unique mix of sporting facilities for local and regional communities, including a tennis centre with four indoor and six outdoor courts (four of which will be used for Wheelchair Tennis during the Games), a hockey centre with two competition pitches and five-a-side football pitches. The facilities will be able to accommodate elite hockey events for up to 15,000 spectators. ExCel With it’s five arenas, ExCeL will host a total of 143 sessions across a wide range of Olympic and Paralympic sports including: Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Boccia, Paralympic Table Tennis, Paralympic Judo, Paralympic Powerlifting, Sitting Volleyball, Wheelchair Fencing. Location: ExCeL is situated near London City Airport in east London’s Royal Victoria Dock. After the Games, ExCeL will revert to its role as one of Europe’s largest and most versatile exhibition spaces.

Greenwich Park Greenwich Park is London’s oldest Royal Park, dating back to 1433. Within the Park is The Royal Observatory and the home of Greenwich Mean Time. Greenwich Park will host the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian competitions, plus the combined running and shooting event, of the Modern Pentathlon. Greenwich Park is on the south bank of the River Thames, in south east London. Number of events: 19. The temporary structures will be taken down after the Games. Hadleigh Farm, Essex A new Mountain Bike course will be provided in Hadleigh Farm, Essex, with temporary grandstands and facilities to be built in the run-up to the 2012 Games. Number of events: 2. Hadleigh Farm is owned by the Salvation Army. The venue covers a 550-acre site including beautiful grassland and woodland. It also includes the surrounding countryside of Hadleigh Castle Country Park. Spectators will be able to watch the action along a course winding through woods and parkland. o lympic guide Hampden Park, Scotland Hampden Park is Scotland’s national football stadium. It recently underwent a £70m refurbishment and is situated a few miles to the south of Glasgow in Scotland. Number of events: 2.The stadium will host a total of eight Olympic Football matches, with action in both the men’s and women’s competitions. Hampton Court Palace, Surrey During the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Cycling Time Trial will take place on the roads around the stunning Hampton Court Palace, formerly home to many famous monarchs. Hampton Court is located in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Hampton Court will host the start and finish of the men’s and women’s Time Trials in the Road Cycling competition. Both the men’s and women’s Time Trials are free events. Number of events: 2. The Handball Arena The Handball Arena will be the venue for Handball, Goalball and the Fencing discipline of Modern Pentathlon. Location: In the west of the Olympic Park. The Handball Arena will host the preliminary rounds and quarter-finals of the Handball competition. It will also be the venue for the Fencing discipline of Modern Pentathlon. In the Paralympic Games it will be the venue for Goalball. After the Games, the Handball Arena will

be adapted to become a multiuse sports centre for community use, athlete training and small to medium-sized events. It will be able to cater for a wide range of indoor sports, including basketball, handball, badminton, boxing, martial arts, netball, table tennis, wheelchair rugby and volleyball. It will also include a health and fitness club with changing facilities and a cafe for use by the local community. Hockey Centre The temporary Hockey Centre located in the Olympic Park will have two separate pitches, one with spectator seating. The facility will also be used for Paralympic 5-a-side and 7-a-side Football.Number of events: 4. The Hockey Centre will have two pitches, one with spectator seating and one for use as a warm-up area. As well as the Olympic Hockey competition, the facility will host Paralympic 5-a-side and 7-a-side Football. After the Games the Hockey Centre will move to the north of the Olympic Park, joining a group of facilities in the area known as Eton Manor. It will have 3,000 permanent seats with the ability to increase to up to 15,000 for major events. Horse Guards Parade The Beach Volleyball competition will take place on the Prime Minister’s doorstep at Horse Guards Parade, at the heart of Whitehall, the political centre of the UK. It is

close to Downing Street and across St James’s Park from Buckingham Palace. A temporary arena will be built in 2012, with sand brought in to create London’s very own ‘beach’. Number of events: 2. Not surprisingly, the temporary facilities will be taken down after the Games! Hyde Park The largest of London’s Royal Parks, Hyde Park has been open to the public since 1637. It will host the Marathon Swimming and Triathlon events. Spectators will enjoy a grandstand view of the finishing area for the London 2012 Triathlon, with many thousands more able to watch as the athletes swim, cycle and run on the course. The park is also expected to be home to the music, theatre, film and cultural events that will take place throughout the summer of 2012. Hyde Park lies within London’s West End, within easy walking distance of top class accommodation and shops. Number of events: 4. After the Games, the grandstand and course will be removed. The Lee Valley White Water Centre, Hertfordshire Located in Hertfordshire, it will host the Canoe Slalom competition. Located on the edge of the 1,000acre River Lee Country Park – part of the 26-mile long, 10,000-acre Lee Valley Regional Park in Hertfordshire. Number of events: 4 Two new canoe slalom courses are

being built for the Games: a 300m competition course and a 160m intermediate/training course. A new 10,000sq m lake is also being constructed. After the Games, the two courses and the facilities building will remain and the Centre will become a venue for canoeing and kayaking for the local community and visitors, and be suitable for beginners to elite athletes. It will also be a major leisure attraction for white water rafting. Lord’s Cricket Ground Lord’s Cricket Ground has been home to cricket since 1814 and will host the Olympic Archery competition. Lord’s is in St John’s Wood, near Regent’s Park. Comparatively little preparation will be needed to get this world-class venue ready. An Archery range will be created on the outfield of the main ground and the Nursery ground. Number of events: 4. After the Games, Lord’s will return to its traditional role as the home of cricket, providing a base for the Marylebone Cricket Club and Middlesex County Cricket Club. Archery equipment from the training, warm up and competition venues will be given to clubs and schools across the country.

The new stadium’s arch soars over 130m into the sky, more than four times the height of the towers of the old Wembley Stadium. Each seat has an unrestricted view of the pitch and plenty of leg room. However, through “wear and tear”, teeth are often worn away, and this leads to a number of problems. I would like to deal with the management of worn and discoloured teeth in this edition. WHY DO TEETH WEAR AWAY? Teeth are covered by a very strong, protective outer layer called enamel. is enamel can be damaged in one of two ways: attrition (which is when teeth grind against each other) or erosion (which is when acid damages or erodes the enamel away). Once the inner layer called dentine is exposed, the teeth wear away much faster as dentine is a lot softer than enamel. A useful analogy is to compare enamel to granite and dentine to chalk. WHO IS MORE AT RISK FROM WEARING TEETH DOWN? People who clench or grind their teeth (especially at night whilst asleep) put excessive forces on the teeth. is can lead to extra stresses being placed on the teeth as well as on the ﬁllings. is results in cracks in the teeth and also actual chipping away of the outer enamel layer. is has a net result of shortening the teeth, which makes them less attractive and more sensitive. Acid can also ERODE teeth away. Acid can either come via the diet, or from within the body. Foods and drinks that

If someone has “bite interferences” on one of the back teeth i.e. the teeth don’t fit properly and slide into an abnormal biting pattern, then this can lead to an altered functional pattern of chewing. is will cause the edges of the enamel on the front teeth to wear away. Also, if there are some back teeth missing, then the chewing pressure is far greater on the front teeth and this will also cause damage. e solution for these problems is to make minor bite adjustments to get harmonious movements of teeth over each other when chewing, and to replace missing teeth at the back with implants or bridges to improve the function. WHAT IS THE BEST TREATMENT FOR WORN TEETH? Teeth that have been damaged by grinding and acid, require comprehensive dentistry to achieve the bite to be reconstructed to how it was. In February Robert was the opening speaker at the 2012 “BACK SHOW” where he spoke on modern treatment options for intervertebral disc problems. More recently Robert and his Spine Plus colleague, Darren Chandler have joined forces with pioneering endoscopic spinal surgeon Martin Knight and top pain consultant Chris Jenner to form e Harley Street Integrated Spine Clinic due to open in September 2012. Q Why are back problems so common? Many people have weak core muscles and if you injure your back these muscles tend to switch off and can remain switched off even if the pain improves. In addition, most people do not know how to sit or lift. ey may have heard of “bend your knees and not your back” but it’s not quite as simple as that. Q What causes back pain? ere can be many potential sources of back pain, muscles can become strained, tight or knotted; the small facet joints along the spine can become locked out of place or subject to wear and tear; and / or the discs separating the bones in the spine can become torn or bulge which can put pressure on the nerve roots forming part of the sciatic nerve running down the back of the leg, this is the most common cause of “sciatica”. Q So what is the best way to diagnose back problems? My colleagues and I all try and stick to the good old fashioned principles of a thorough examination, testing reflexes, whole body posture (even the feet), testing the individual movements at each level of the spine and looking for adverse tension and “trigger

points” with the spinal muscles. MRI scans are also very useful for looking inside the spine, and can give valuable information on the health of the discs and joints of the spine. Sadly in this day and age of budget cuts and time pressures within the NHS this thorough approach is often neglected. Q My friend has been told they need a spinal fusion operation, what does that involve? ere are actually several types of "fusion" operation. Access to the spine can either be from the front (ALIF), from the back (PLIF) or side (TLIF and XLIF) depending on the surgeons preference and training. ey all involve removing a damaged disc and replacing it with bone graft then fusing the two vertebral bones either side of the disc space together with the aid of surgical screws. ese types of operation are usually reserved for patients with severely worn discs, or for patients with discogenic pain who have not responded to other treatments. In the case of the latter however most surgeons would advise exhausting all treatment options before considering a fusion as there is a risk that by fusing and preventing any movement between two segments of the spine this can cause adjacent segments to suﬀer premature wear and tear (adjacent level disease). Last year we installed an IDD computerised spinal distraction machine at our Chigwell clinic, we are one of seven clinics clinics in the UK to have one of these machines, it is proving to be a real alternative for many of our patients with degenerative discs, some of whom have been able to cancel their planned surgery.
