After graduating from university with a first in geography just last year, Madeleine Rogers, a former pupil of Beaconsfield High School, spotted a gap in the market for beautifully presented, high quality mail-order gifts. “e inspiration came after ordering bunches of flowers online as presents and constantly being disappointed”, explains Madeleine, “a high expense for a smaller-than-you-thought bouquet, which at the end of the day, gets thrown out!”. e result is the delightfully named Whimsy and Wilbur, a business providing speedy online gifting; hand wrapped gift boxes filled with high-end gifts for the stylish home, delivered straight to the lucky recipient’s door. Items featured in the current gift boxes include gorgeous scented candles, glazed geometric vases and gold embossed notebooks. Each gift box also includes some edible goodies for instant gratification, as well as greetings cards to pass on the smile. As the business grows, Madeleine is beginning to tap into the corporate gift market,

too, providing custom incentive prizes and employee gifts to her growing list of clients. In May 2015, just a month after launching, Whimsy & Wilbur was selected by Jacqueline Gold, CEO of Ann Summers, to receive a #WOW award. e Women on Wednesday campaign recognises and rewards businesses with strong brand values, quality products and well-designed websites, delivering what their customers want. is was an impressive accolade for a 22 year-old fresh out of college and operating the business from her parents’ kitchen table in Penn. “It has been pretty daunting at times starting up a business, but equally as exciting”, said Madeleine, who has also just embarked on an MSC at the University of Reading. He and his wife Megs haavve been through unimaginable grief following the loss of their daughter Anna to cancer and rather than let it overwhelm them, they created a charity to help others in similar positions. I have huge admiration for their efforts and am delighted to help them with this fundraising event for such a terrific cause. Miss Woodcock, who joined Charlotte House as Deputy Head in January 2010, has been teaching in primary schools for over twenty years. ith Christmas just around the corner, there are plenty of lovely goodies to buy for family and friends. Sweet-smelling soaps, hand-made jams and chutneys, hampers brimming with cakes and treats - how many of us have looked at the beribboned and bedecked packages and thought “I could do that”. ere are plenty of home-grown ideas which have captured the imagination of the High Street - global baby and toddler food brand Ella’s Kitchen came from a parent’s passion for his children to eat healthily; while the founders of cosmetics retailer Lush originally started by mixing beauty products in their kitchen. Good business ideas are often shared with partners, other family members or friends, but be wary - for every success story, there are many more ventures that fall by the wayside. If 2016 could be the time you’re going to set up a new business, then Vicky Holland, corporate partner at Buckinghamshire law firm B P Collins LLP, has a few seasonal tips to help you start the New Year on the right note: Happy families (and friends) - a working relationship with someone you are close to is very diﬀerent, so make sure you set clear boundaries on roles and expectations Is the price tag too high - if you have to invest in stock and premises, then talking finance with your nearest and dearest can be diﬃcult. You need to be clear from the start how investment cash will be spent, who benefits and when, and what happens if the investment doesn’t succeed Festive fun or winter blues - decide if your relationship is strong enough to handle the low points as well as the highs. Setting up your own business won’t be plain sailing and you 1 6 NOVEMBER 2015

need to understand your respective strengths and weaknesses and how much time you need to invest. It’s no good if one half of the team is heading out to next year’s Christmas party when the other has a long list of orders to fulfil Tinsel or turkey - if the business is going well and the future looks sparkling, then some big decisions will have to be made to take advantage of its potential. How quickly do you expand, can you aﬀord to pay yourself a wage, do you need to take on extra staﬀ? On the other hand, if the idea has turned into a bit of a turkey, you need to decide how and when to cut your losses. A Christmas message - if there’s one essential and timely plea, it is to talk to a professional adviser before you start. Someone who can explain the legal and business intricacies of everything from the company structure to supplier contracts; from shareholder agreements to sales; investments to national insurance payments. Goodwill to all men (and women) - if you get it right, working with trusted family, friends and colleagues can be a joy. But remember that if you get it wrong, it can ruin relationships for a very long time. And lastly, much like remembering to make the Christmas pudding in plenty of time, good preparation is the key to success! ■

DAVENIES CELEBRATIONS JUBILEE WEEKEND AND OPENING OF THE NEW JUBILEE BUILDING 16TH/17TH OCTOBER 2015

avenies School in Beaconsfield began its Jubilee celebrations in style in October with a weekend of events, culminating in the official opening of the new Jubilee Building. is ambitious project has been completed in time for the school’s 75th Anniversary celebrations and represents the school’s commitment to developing a state of the art learning environment for the children. e Jubilee Building was officially opened by Johnny Ball, the renowned educator, broadcaster and entertainer who captivated the assembled boys, their families, the staff and guests with a humorous and informative address demonstrating his love of science. Mr Ball was impressed with the quality of the new teaching and learning facility that provides such a spacious and inspiring environment in which young minds will be able to develop. Following the Opening Ceremony, the assembled crowd was treated to a performance by the specially created Jubilee Choir of children, parents and staff and then the school opened its doors for all to enjoy a morning of activities. e school welcomed back alumni from far and wide, some of whom were at Davenies when it was founded seventy five years ago, and their presence added 1 8 NOVEMBER 2015

to the special community feel of the day. e Jubilee Open Morning and the Jubilee Cocktail Party, that preceded it the evening before, were a great success and the school was also able to raise £7500 for the Niemann-Pick Research Foundation to help support their aim to fund research and trials into a therapeutic treatments for this very rare, terminal, neurological disease. Headmaster, Carl Rycroft, said, “It was great to be part of such an enjoyable occasion. Johnny Ball was inspiring, the boys showed the breadth of their talents and we got to spend time with families, alumni and visitors in what was an excellent demonstration of the thriving community that exists at Davenies.” Other Davenies Jubilee events last week included a cross-curricular theme day for the boys based on the number 75 and a Cocktail Party for parents, families and friends. ■

GRACE STOTTER Flackwell Heath Teenager Grace Stotter shot to fame last month, starring alongside top names in the highly acclaimed Suffragette.

race has been a pupil at the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe for over 10 years, during which time she has appeared in productions all over the county, and with the Jackie Palmer Street Crew danced at Disneyland Paris. Grace has appeared on the stage at Wycombe Swan in pantomimes a number of times and her passion lies in her acting. Having had roles in various television series such as Midsomer Murders, Jackie Palmer Agency suggested Grace to the producers of Suﬀragette for the role of Maggie Miller. After an audition and three recalls, she was given the role. To work alongside Cary Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter is an exciting experience; Grace was thrilled to be playing Anne-Marie Duﬀ's daughter in a film which also starred Meryl Streep. However, for Grace the film became all the more poignant because at 18 years of age she was able to vote for the very first time in this year’s General Elections in May. Having worked on the movie she was able to

realise the sacrifices, the pain and the hardships which the suﬀragettes went through to secure votes for women. is made her all the more determined to take advantage of the rights won by those brave women, and Grace made sure she voted. Grace played the role of Maggie Miller, a 12 year old factory worker, who regularly suﬀered at the hands of Taylor, her tyrant boss. e movie tells the story of the early feminist movement in the UK, of the women who were willing to risk their jobs, their homes, their families and their lives in their pursuit to secure equality. Grace is currently studying dance at Amersham and Wycombe College, and still attends the Jackie Palmer Stage School whilst auditioning for carefully selected roles and planning her next steps in the world of film and drama. ■

utumn 2015 has been an exciting time for e Upstairs Gallery in Berkhamsted. e gallery celebrated its fourth birthday, with an exhibition of illustration, which included work by TV favourite Tony Hart, followed by an exhibition of paintings by Andrew Dixon, recently seen on Sky TV’s Landscape Painter of the Year. In addition the gallery presented a cheque for £600 to DENS (|Dacorum Emergency Night Shelter) - the proceeds from a charity art show when artists were invited to donated small unframed works which were sold for £25 each. e gallery is currently showing some unique and innovative work in a Christmas exhibition entitled Deep+Crisp+Even. Paintings, printmaking, photography, ceramics, textiles, glass, jewellery - the choice is yours. Definitely not to be missed. Joan says. ‘We are delighted at the the number of diﬀerent ways we have been able to interact with the local community, providing an art resource for all ages to enjoy and take part in, as well as helping our local charities. It also allows runners to set up charitable donations and fund raising initiatives – either in aid of Rotary or charities of their choice. Entrants come from far and wide – with Marlow, High Wycombe and Maidenhead contributing the greatest numbers. David Sutherland, Chairman of this year’s organising team, advises potential runners to sign up as early as possible. He says “last year we had to close the process in early November due to the extraordinary level of interest. o Woolf, Chief Executive of South Bucks Hospice, looks forward to a special date in her charity’s calendar – e poignant Light Up A Life memorial service on December 11, which this year welcomes actress Pauline Quirke as its special guest. Once every year, we take some time out to gather with the families and friends of all those who have lost a loved one during the past few years. We come together to celebrate the lives of our loved ones, and to mourn their passing. If you have lost a loved one, then you are warmly invited to join us at Pusey House in High Wycombe, to light up a light in their memory. South Bucks Hospice has been serving this community for 30 years; providing care and support to people who have a life limiting illness. We also provide practical and psychological support to the families and carers of our patients. We oﬀer a broad range of clinical, psychological and holistic treatments to our patients, and are also a haven where our patients have access to companionship, light, nature and the arts. Our patients value the opportunity to mix with fellow humans. ey appreciate the solace of friendship, and it is not unusual to hear laughter and singing emanating from our hospice. Over the years, our dedicated staﬀ and our remarkable team of volunteers have seen many patients come and then go. Yet none are forgotten, as each human is a truly unique

light. Our patients leave us with wonderful memories and they inspired us with their courage, humour and compassion. We find that they have left a radiant light in our hospice. A school choir will provide song, and there will be some inspirational readings and poetry. DECK YOUR WALLS With an artwork for Life from Berlin this Christmas HOW ABOUT A SECTION OF BERLIN WALL IN A TEENAGERS BEDROOM? Simon’s concept of Berlin Walls was initially an attempt to bring little-known Berlin artist, Walter Lindner, to public notice. Convinced by the quality of the works Simon sold his house in Roke to finance the initial purchase of the artists studio, preventing it being sold off ad hoc. Lindner’s work is proving popular at events around the home. e artist, who died in 2007 had worked tirelessly to perfect his monotype technique over 40 years. Of those that are starting to know his work, some now regard him as a master of the monotype – Lindner used a monoprint as the basis or background to create unique, hand-finished, highly decorative original artworks, which remain affordable still. Buoyed by the positive response to Lindner’s work Simon has been delving more earnestly into the Berlin art world. Liberty in fashion

Fashion and Textile Museum has launched a major new exhibition, exploring the iconic Liberty brand in fashion to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the company.

ver 150 garments, textiles and objects demonstrate Liberty’s strong relationships with designers from Arthur Silver of Silver Studio to collaborations with Jean Muir, Cacharel, Yves Saint Laurent and Vivienne Westwood. The exhibition charts Liberty’s history as ‘the’ fashionable place to shop as well as its role as the source and originator of key trends in fashion history, from Orientalism and Aesthetic dress in the 19th century, through Art Nouveau and Art Deco in the early 20th century, and the revival of these styles since the 1950s. Liberty Art Fabrics and the textile design studio take centre stage, as the internationally recognised leader in floral, patterned and paisley prints and dress fabrics. At the cutting edge of design and the decorative arts since 1875, Liberty is celebrated throughout the world both as a department store and for its distinctive textile prints. Founded by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, the store began on Regent Street in 1875, soon becoming one of ‘the’ shops in London. Arthur Liberty’s clients and friends included the artists and aesthetes Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Frederic Leighton, Oscar Wilde, Dame Ellen Terry and James McNeill Whistler. The Liberty dress department opened in 1884 and Liberty style soon became firmly associated with a unique ‘fashion’ look. Liberty continued to adapt to changing taste whilst maintaining its identity. The Twenties and Thirties saw the development of the floral prints that are still associated with the company and were a mainstay of these decades. ‘Young Liberty’ was introduced in the 1950s, showcasing the best of new British and international design. A wave of young designers in the Sixties embraced Liberty fabrics and the textile design studio continued to produce up-to-date, innovative designs. Designers such as Mary Quant, Foale and Tuffin, Gina Fratini and Jean Muir contributed to the company’s key role in the fashion of the 1970s. Liberty continues to inspire fashion today as designers around the world feature the brand’s distinctive textiles. Shoes: Pleasure and Pain at V&A

The transformative power of extreme footwear will be explored in the V&A’s summer 2015 fashion exhibition, Shoes: Pleasure and Pain

ore than 200 pairs of historic and contemporary shoes from around the world will be on display, many for the first time. The exhibition will explore the agonising aspect of wearing shoes as well as the euphoria and obsession they can inspire. The V&A’s shoe collection is unrivalled, spanning the globe and over 2000 years. Curator Helen Persson has delved into other international collections and the wardrobes of private individuals to select an exceptional range of shoes. Shoes worn by or associated with high profile figures including Marilyn Monroe, Queen Victoria, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kylie Minogue will be shown as well as famous shoes, such as the ballet slippers designed for Moira Shearer in the 1948 film The Red Shoes. Footwear by 70 named designers including Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo and Prada will be on display. The exhibition will be shown over two floors. The luxurious, boudoir design of the ground floor gallery will examine three themes: transformation, status and seduction. ‘Transformation’ will present shoes of myth and legend, with different cultural interpretations of the Cinderella story. It will explore the concept

of shoes being empowering as passed down through folklore, illustrated by the Seven League Boots from the ‘Hop o’ My Thumb’ tale, and how this feeds into contemporary marketing for such things as football boots and the concept of modern-day, fairy-tale shoemakers, whose designs will magically transform the life of the wearer. ‘Status’ will reveal how impractical shoes have been worn to represent privileged and leisurely lifestyles – their design, shape and material can often make them unsuitable for walking.. Shoes on display will include the now infamous Vivienne Westwood blue platforms worn by Naomi Campbell in 1993. ‘Status’ will also demonstrate how historically shoe fashions originated from the European royal courts, while today the focus has shifted to famous shoe designers. Desirable shoes such as the ‘Pompadour’, worn by women in the 18th-century French court will sit alongside designs by the some of the most well-known names in fashion today, including Alexander McQueen and Sophia Webster. Within ‘Seduction’, the shoes represent an expression of sexual empowerment or a passive source of pleasure. Like feet, shoes can be objects of fetishism. Extreme heels and tightlaced leather boots will be on display as well as examples of erotic styles channeled by mainstream fashion in recent years. In contrast, the first floor gallery is dedicated to dissecting the processes involved in designing and creating footwear, from concept to final shoe, peeling back the layers and revealing how they are made, combining traditional craftsmanship with technological innovation and how they unite function with art. Designer sketches, materials, embellishments and shoe lasts, such as the lasts created by H. & M. SHOULDER DISLOCATION: tips and treatment

hen experiencing the pain of an injury or recurring issue, fast access to high quality specialist treatment is a patient’s number one priority. After a fall this summer Mr Barrie King was treated by Mr Rajeev Sharma at Spire Harpenden Hospital and wanted to share his experience, below he talks about his diagnosis and treatment. “I was having a lovely day when the accident happened; a group of us had gone to Brighton and we were having a few relaxing drinks at the pub. When it came time to leave I stood up and that’s the last thing I remember. I was told later that I’d fallen down some stairs inside and was taken to the local hospital to be checked over. “I was diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder which they treated there and then, however I was still struggling with the pain afterwards. I was later told that not only had I dislocated my shoulder but I’d also got a bad fracture and torn rotator cuff. “My son had previously been treated at Spire Harpenden Hospital and I knew I wanted the best treatment possible, so I decided I wanted to complete my treatment there. I called and spoke with the outpatient booking team who advised that Mr Sharma, an Orthopaedic Consultant was available that Saturday for an appointment. I was so pleased it was so soon. “Mr Sharma is a brilliant surgeon and a great man, I was lucky to be treated by him. Everything was so quick and straightforward; I had my first appointment on 27th June and was in for my surgery on the 6th July. I was told it would be six weeks in a sling but Mr Sharma had me out of it at four weeks and then the physiotherapy team took over. “The physiotherapy team were fantastic, they give you confidence in being able to move normally again and I loved having hydrotherapy! Before this I couldn’t lift my arm at all, now I can lift it level and I’m working on getting it above my head with the help of my physiotherapist. “My care at Spire Harpenden Hospital has been brilliant, everyone is happy and seems to enjoy working there, I was looked after so well throughout my whole treatment and it was a pleasure coming into the hospital.” Shoulders are prone to getting injured during falls as it is natural to brace yourself with your arms outstretched. Mr

Sharma’s advice is to seek treatment at the earliest opportunity to avoid further damage. Surgery may be required depending on the severity of the injury, which may have either dislocated or fractured the shoulder. In some severe falls, a fracture and dislocation may occur together. These procedures require either keyhole (arthroscopic) or open surgical procedures done at the appropriate time. Following this, regular specialist physiotherapy is given to achieve the best function of the shoulder.

outh Cancer Action Month is a charity campaign which aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer and make a difference by saving thousands of lives through early detection and prevention. roughout November we will be aiming to get more mouth cancers diagnosed at an early stage by increasing education of the risk factors and signs and symptoms while encouraging everybody to discuss them with their dental professional. As long-time campaigners for mouth cancer, everybody at the British Dental Health Foundation who run the campaign are passionate and committed to increasing awareness of the disease and reducing the number of lives lost to it every year. In the UK, more than 6,700 people were diagnosed with mouth cancer last year. e disease has grown by a third in the last decade – and remains one of very few cancers which are predicted to increase further in the coming years – that’s why Mouth Cancer Action Month is so important. Although there are risk factors heavily linked to the disease, mouth cancer can affect anybody – that’s why it’s so important that we all know what to look out for. e campaign is all about taking action. Don’t leave that ulcer unattended for more than three weeks. Don’t ignore that unusual lump or swelling or red and white patches in your mouth. Early detection could save your life. Mouth cancer takes the lives of more than 2,000 people each year in the UK, which is more than testicular and cervical cancer combined. Mouth cancer also takes more lives a year than road traffic accidents. By knowing more about the risk factors, living healthier lifestyles and by learning what to look out we can help reduce our risk and lower the number of lives that mouth cancer effects. SO WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS? Although mouth cancer can affect anybody, and is strongly associated with the age and gender of a person, around 91% of all diagnoses are linked to lifestyle. is means that by amending our lifestyle choices, we can help cut the chances of developing mouth cancer. Here are the risk factors that have been shown to play a major role in contracting the disease. TOBACCO-USE e health implications of smoking are well documented, but mouth cancer often gets overlooked. e majority of mouth cancer cases continue to be as result of smoking and tobacco use. Around one in five people in the UK currently smoke, which accounts for roughly two in every three mouth cancer cases. ALCOHOL Drinking alcohol to excess is another major risk factor 7 4 NOVEMBER 2015

linked with mouth cancer – associated with around a third of all cases. e key is the excess part. An occasional glass of wine here and there is considered much better than drinking the bottle in a single evening. Moderation really is important. HPV ere’s no easy way to say this, but oral sex is becoming a problem. In fact, many experts believe the Human papillomavirus (HPV), transmitted mostly through oral sex, will overtake tobacco use as the main cause of mouth cancer within the next decade. You can find out more about HPV and the gender-neutral vaccination campaign at www.hpvaction.org POOR-DIET Up to half of all mouth cancer cases are partly due to poor diet. A diet rich in fruit and vegetables will not only keep your body fit and healthy, it will help to reduce the risk of mouth cancer. On-starchy vegetables and fruits (not salted or pickled), and foods containing carotenoids, can actually help to reduce mouth cancer risk. Mouth cancer risk is lower in people with the highest intake of the following foods, versus those with the lowest intake, research has shown have shown: •Fruit – 48% lower risk •Vegetables – 34% lower risk •Vitamin C supplements – 24% lower risk (versus never-users) •Calcium supplements – 36% lower risk (versus never-users) •Caﬀeinated coﬀee – 39% lower risk in 4 cups/day (versus non-drinkers) •Green tea – 20% lower risk CHEWING-SMOKELESS TOBACCO Although some believe this type of tobacco is safer than smoking, the reality is that it is much more dangerous. Like cigarettes, smokeless tobacco is a serious risk to a person’s health. Both contain nicotine, which is a very addictive drug. In fact, there is twice as much nicotine in smokeless tobacco as in an average cigarette. So remember your dentist is not only checking your teeth and gums but doing an oral screen for signs of oral cancer as well. So please make sure you go to your dentist regularly. ■

Winter Run returns to London with an even cooler route for 2016

he Cancer Research UK Winter Run is returning to London for 2016 and is bigger and better than ever before. The 2015 sellout event which saw 15,000 runners hit the streets, is bringing back the much loved Polar Bear hugs, and a cool new route will see runners enjoying this unique closed-road event where they will pass some of the most iconic landmarks the city has to offer with masses of winter fun and surprises thrown in for good measure. The 10k flat route event, will start in the history steeped Trafalgar Square, where the winter fun will kick off in style with a brand new feature – Snow BlastOff! Which will start each wave of runners with an explosion of snow forming an arch over them as they head off for more winter fun. Runners will head off along The Strand, past the world famous Novello and Aldwych Theatres, before heading further into the City of London, past the Royal Courts of Justice, through the beautiful Guildhall Yard and towards the ‘The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street’ also known as The Bank of England. At some point along this route they will be transported into a winter wonderland when they enter the giant Snow Zone, which this year boasts six huge cannons, showering runners with snow. Continuing, runners will be treated to breath-taking sights of St Pauls Cathedral before heading back into Westminster and towards the famous Downing Street, where the Polar Bears and his friends will be waiting to

give out warm friendly hugs. The course will entertain not only the runners, st but also the families and friends who come out to show their support – don’t worry though, there will be enough winter fun to keep everybody’s spirits up. Auctioneer Simon Jones reports that from the first day back in January there was a notable impact on prices achieved, especially for the specialist and collector’s items. “e first item where we really saw the impact was a fur coat which had an estimate of £50-80 and sold in excess of £800.” Since that time many of the more specialist items have found international buyers who are paying high prices for rare items. Examples include a pair of Doulton Grebes at £3650 and a pair of Christopher Dresser Minton Vases for £2750, a bracket

click sold to China for £1850 and a Russian rifle from the time of War And Peace sold for £1850. Even less rare items show the effect of bidders sitting at home or in the office with many lots of good furnishing antiques selling to the absentee buyer, even regular dealers are staying at home and buying at widely scatted sales at the same time. It seems that with this technology you can be in several places at once. Director Jake Wilde says, “e team here have been delighted with how well the whole system works and the positive benefits it provides for vendors. 1. There are three main types of shower: power, electric and mixer. Power showers are ideal for homees with plenty of hot water, as they take stored hot and cold d water and mix it together to create the desired temperature ture. A built-in pump boosts the fflo low of water, creating a po owerful spray, even if you haavve low water pressure (a tank-fed, fed, graavitybased water system is required). 2. An electric shower only needs cold watter because it heats the water as you shower and so will wo ork even if the boiler isn’t working. These showers are great for homes with limited hot water and will work with anyy plumbing system. “Electric showers come in a range of kilowatt ratings - go for nine kilowatts or abo ovve, as you’ll enjoy a better fflo low rate,” says Emma Foster from Mira Showers. 3. Mixer showers need a supply of both hot and cold water, and blend them to the required temperature. Mixers are either surface mounted or haavve valves buried in the wall - the for mer are usually easier to install, as they fix to the tiled wall, but hidden valves often look nicer. Foster says: “Go for a mixer shower that offers ther mostatic control to ensure the temperature stays constant, even when the toilet is fflushed. lushed.” 4. Digital showers also haavve an electronic display that can show the temperature, flow rate and time.” These showers can often be controlled wirelessly from another location, so you can tur n the shower on to war m up before you’re even out of bed. 5. If your shower produces little more than a dribble, an electric shower pump should make it more of a deluge, but pumps aren’t compatible with all boilers or the answer for all homes - a power shower is sometimes better. In some older properties, it may be necessary to replace the pipework, especially the pipe bringing in water from the main in the street, to improve the water flow rate. A better boiler and/or hot-water cylinder may also be the answer ask a good heating engineer for advice.

At the end of the designers’ 2-week induction, Linda provides a specialist interior design session, encouraging them to experiment with colour and offering advice on everything from kitchen layouts to the latest appliances and trends. Linda has become a part of the Wren family, and she is more than just the ‘face’ of Wren, it’s a synergy that is cemented in her passion for interiors and love of the brand.

ctober is always an exciting time in the kitchen calendar - all the major German kitchen manufacturers open their Factories and showcase their latest designs inhouse in various different locations. Whilst all the manufacturers are dependent on various manufacturing factors such as new veneers,and carcase materials, they are also desperate for the latest in technology for such boring components as hinges and soft close mechanisms that we just take for granted now. I simply love the new designs from Pronorm, combining the lacquers and laminates in subtle colours ( that you never grown tired of ) with stunning oak and white glass units. The use of pocket doors whilst not a new invention have become very sophisticated and glide with ease and the new interiors from Pronorm show just how easy it is to be totally organised in the kitchen. The versaltity of designing with a German range is also reflected in the price. It is possible to achieve the same design look and indeed colour using a door finished in a coloured laminate for a fraction of the price when using a high gloss lacquer. Concrete laminate doors for example are also proving that you can have texture and colour without blowing the budget. Although the kitchen has always been at the centre of family life, it has now also become the dining room, study and TV area all into one. The fact that all the food storage, prepping and cooking also takes place means that design needs to be simply tailored to individual needs. A couple with no children or animals have very different needs to a family with children. Its really lovely that so much can be stored away such as coffee machines, toasters and blenders,

leaving clutter free worktops. It is also possible to hide away Ovens, Steam Ovens and Microwaves with specially designed cupboards that bleep if machines are left on and the doors closed.

FOOD IDEAS AND NEWS FROM THE ARTICHOKE

he breezy month of November is now with us with the first glimpse of frost, which yield the sweetest parsnips, perfectly paired alongside Jerusalem artichokes served with a sizzling roast, or blitzed into a warming creamy soup. Sweet roast chestnuts and juicy clementine also come to the force and leave you in anticipation of the deliciously spiced festive season that lies ahead. Time to enjoy the wonderfully moreish ingredients such as salsify, winter truﬄe, highland venison and partridge that all feature on the autumn into winter menus at the Artichoke. So, as the nights draw in and a with an autumnal feel to the weather, what better way to enjoy the late harvest than with this comforting slow cooked one pot wonder? For this recipe I have chosen a whole chicken, but you could equally use a couple of pheasants instead. Once prepared, this dish can be left in the oven to cook for several hours, whilst you go for a walk in the cold autumn air to return to this comforting, satisfying treat. ■

POT ROASTED CHICKEN

WITH ROOT VEGETABLES AND PEARL BARLEY

INGREDIENTS 1 oven ready free range chicken 2 sprigs of thyme 2 bay leaves 8 slices streaky bacon salt and freshly ground pepper PEARL BARLEY BROTH 200 g pearl barley 800 ml chicken stock, hot 1 tbsp olive oil 2 large carrots 1 small celeriac 1 onion 2 shallots 2 cloves garlic 4 celery sticks 50 g diced pancetta 200 ml dry vermouth salt and freshly ground pepper

METHOD • Season the chicken inside and out.

• Place the thyme inside the cavity. • Wrap the breast with the bacon, then quickly brown the whole bird in a hot frying pan. • Meanwhile, prepare the pearl barley by rinsing it in cold water. • Peel the carrots, onions, and celeriac, and cut into medium dice. • Peel and finely dice the shallots and garlic. • Sweat oﬀ the shallot and onion in a large

casserole pot; add the celery, carrot, celeriac, bay leaf and garlic. • Drop in the pearl barley and add the dry vermouth and reduce for 5 minutes; then add your hot stock. • Place your browned chicken on top of the pearl barley and cover with a lid. • Cook in a preheated oven at 190 degrees C/375 degrees F/Gas Mark 5. • After 45 minutes remove the lid and baste the bird with the juices. • Return to the oven, uncovered, for a further 10 minutes. • Remove the chicken from the pot, and turn it upside down onto a clean tray, to allow the juice to run back into the breast. • Leave for 10 – 15 minutes in a warm place.

TO SERVE e chicken can then be cut into quarters, serving a section of breast or leg for each person. Serve over a couple of hearty spoonful of the pearl barley broth
