The Wormsley esTaTe A Hidden Gem in the Heart of the Chilterns

urn off the M40 at junction 5 and you'll find yourself less than a minute from one of the county's most stunning private estates. If you've never heard of Wormsley then you're not alone, this hidden gem is a secret that local lovers of cricket and the arts have been keeping to themselves. e estate has existed since the 11th century, but it was American Billionaire Sir Paul Getty who, after purchasing it in 1984, carried out an extensive restoration project to make it the sensational venue that it is today. Under his stewardship Wormsley thrived and became the centre of the initiative to re-establish red kites to their indigenous habitat in the Chilterns. e Estate was farmed organically, a large deer park established and a major programme of woodland re-planting undertaken. e house at Wormsley was largely rebuilt and a library added to house Sir Paul Getty's growing collection of books and historic manuscripts. e library now boasts one of the country's finest collections, including Anne Boleyn's psalter, a Shakespeare first folio, the first edition of Caxton's printing of e Canterbury Tales and a 7th century fragment believed to be the earliest English manuscript.

Wander further into the estate and you'll discover the beautiful walled garden, with a variety of features including historic wells, a croquet lawn, a stunning pergola, a rose garden and a fantastic outdoor theatre.

Oh, and did I mention the 600 seat opera pavilion, home to Garsington Opera?

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the Wormsley Estate, however, is the cricket ground, a surprising feature on an American owned estate, but a labour of love for Sir Paul who was introduced to the game by his good friend Mick Jagger. e Ground plays host to many events, both public and private, throughout the summer and there are always many familiar faces from the world of cricket, including Wormsley's own ambassador, 2005 Ashes hero Matthew Hoggard MBE. is year's line up sees some really special events for cricket lovers including Sir Ian 'Beefy' Botham's 60th birthday picnic in July, featuring a star-studded match followed by a live performance by Eric Clapton in the opera pavilion. In September the ground will play host to a 2005 Ashes reunion event featuring many of the winning team and followed by a live performance of Freddie Flintoff's 'Second Innings' show.

A FUN DAY IN

LEGOLAND

O

n what was probably one of the hottest days of the year so far, a fantastic day out at LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort was had by all. Within our group we had a range in ages from 11 months to 8 years, along with accompanying adults and the day was fun filled and magical from start to finish. With plans in place to head straight to the new attraction Heartlake City, we were wonderfully delayed enroute making the most of every available ride.

Finally at our destination, the older (and slightly taller ones) enjoyed the all new exciting equestrian themed ride, Mia’s Riding Adventure. is horseback adventure spins riders through the air, travelling backwards and forwards on a circular spinning ‘race track’. Just as we finished the ride we were in time to find ourselves a seat (we ended up in ‘e splash zone’) to watch the exciting new live show 'Friends to the Rescue!' featuring Mia, Andrea, Stephanie, Emma and Olivia. Our entire group (well the children) were up dancing – enjoying the splash zone which wasn’t as ‘splashy’ as I had expected and actually quite refreshing

in the heat!

Next we headed over to Olivia’s house and then on to the Heartlake City Express. Always a fabulous way to re-boost the energy, the gentle train meanders through the LEGO countryside before bringing you back to the station. With so many options for lunch we finally settled on an outdoor eatery offering healthy filled baguettes, but there was certainly a huge range to choose from. e splash-tastic Duplo Valley was a much needed cool down and free play area. With the younger ones in the group staying on the lower level and the older ones heading ‘up top’ there was fun to be had by all. We probably could have stayed here all day just to enjoy the cool water however, there was more fun to be had elsewhere in the park.

Following an ice cream break, we headed off to the bigger and better LEGO City Driving School. As ever, much fun! ere really was something for everyone in our party. With over 55 family friendly rides and attractions to discover in 150 acres of beautiful parkland ‘awesome awaits’ at the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort. ■

Cavaradossi, Cameron Rolls has sung the role many times both in England and in German Opera Houses. Scarpia, a role that was made famous by Titto Gobbi when he played opposite Maria Callas, is

played by Francis Church who has sung with all the National Opera Companies. e production is directed by Tony Baker, originally an International designer who has designed for Covent Garden, e Met and several European Opera Houses. isitors to Waddesdon Manor are in for a treat this summer. ere is a rare opportunity to see 100 drawings by artist Henry Moore in the Coach House, as well as one of his sculptures in bronze, entitled King & Queen.

Another of his larger sculptures Hill Arches is located adjacent to the Aviary, where you might also be lucky enough to spot some of the newly hatched Blue Crowned Laughing rushes!

For wine lovers, a visit to the Manor Cellars is a must – here more than 10,000 bottles of wine are stored in the vaults, documenting over 150 years of the Rothschild family’s ownership of two of the most famous Bordeaux vineyards: Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Mouton Rothschild. In celebration of this heritage, artist Joana Vasconcelos has created two major pieces of sculpture which can be seen on the North Front of the Manor. Each piece stands seven metres high and is comprised of an astonishing 574 (empty!) Château Lafite magnums. BIRTHDAY BRONZE

Birthday surprise of life-sized sculpture of children leaves property developer stunned

P

roperty developer Jeff Penman had the surprise of his life when his wife and children took him on a mystery trip to Devon to celebrate his 40th birthday.

Jeff knew he was in line for a special present but had no idea what it was, even speculating he was being taken go-karting, sky diving or on a visit to a wind turbine.

So he was stunned when he was led into the studio of former Bucks artist Andrew Sinclair – and shown a magnificent life-sized sculpture faithfully representing the heads of his three young daughters.

“It was amazing. Jeff didn’t speak for 10 minutes – he was really blown away,” said wife Catherine, 42, a surveyor. “He was quite emotional and it was a huge success.”

Catherine hit upon the idea of the sculpture because she wanted to do something unique for her husband’s birthday.

She discovered Andrew Sinclair through a Google search and saw he had curated the Great British Sculpture Show at Hatfield House last year.

“I rang and spoke to Diane Coates, his partner, who was amazingly helpful,” she said. “I then spoke to Andrew and got a really good vibe from him.”

Andrew travelled from Devon to Northampton to meet the three girls at their school and take pictures and measurements. “e children loved it. He wanted to get to know them and to understand their personality, and that was a key part of it,” said Catherine.

“He was really good with them and really engaged with them which was great.”

Perhaps the hardest challenge was the task of convincing Jeff to travel to Devon without giving away the surprise.

“Jeff had no idea and kept asking what he needed to pack before he went,” she added. “At one stage as we were driving past a wind turbine, he thought we had organised a visit up one of the turbines.” e bronze bust will now take pride of place in the family’s new kitchen which is being built in converted stables at their home.

“I wanted a family present for his 40th,” said Catherine. “I could have bought him a watch or a ticket to the next rugby World Cup but I wanted a present for the whole family to enjoy, one that can be timeless.” e sculpture captures the faces of Francesca, 8, Scarlett, 6 and Claudia, 3. Catherine is thrilled with the likeness, saying it perfectly embodies their personality and spirit. So was she worried beforehand if the surprise present would be a true likeness of her daughters?

Catherine says she resisted the temptation to ask for a sneak picture preview. “I was a little bit anxious, but not terrified, because I had spent a lot of time looking at Andrew’s work on the website and I trusted him.”

Jeff said: “I genuinely had no idea what we were going to do, even when we were on the M5 going south. When I saw the clay sculpture for the first time, I was genuinely blown away by it. Andy had captured my girls at a moment in time, which will be preserved forever. When the sculpture arrived a few weeks later, completed in bronze, it looked even more impressive – the bronze seems to add more even more realism and depth.”

Andrew ran a studio for many years in Wendover until he left the area at Christmas last year due to HS2 and relocated to Devon.

He now runs e Sculpture School at his base in Bondleigh Devon. Andrew said: "It was a delight to work with such a lovely family as the Penmans, and a huge surprise that the girls managed to keep their portrait a secret for their daddy's birthday!

It's always an enormous pleasure for me when clients are thrilled by their commissioned sculpture."

Meanwhile, the Penmans are so pleased with the sculpture they say they are seriously thinking of commissioning Andrew again in the future - to create a bronze sculpture of Frankel, the dachshund! ■

eptember 19th will see an event with a difference coming to the area as two teams take on the challenge of playing six anda half days of continuous cricket with the aim of raising over £100,000 for charity. e official attempt at the Guinness World Record for the Longest Cricket Match will see the teams battle it out on thestunning Wormsley Estate square for a gruelling 156 hours, with the aim of beating the current record of 150 hours and 14 minutes set by the staff of Loughborough University in 2012.

Keeping them motivated and on track will be a host of celebrity umpires including Wormsley's own ambassador, Matthew 'Hoggy' Hoggard MBE who was a guest umpire at the Loughborough game and is keen to support the latest attempt and the three benefitting charities. e first if these is the Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation, formed in 2011 with the aim of promoting reconciliation through sport by creating a permanent home for cricket in a country decimated by the genocide of 1994. e stadium will provide a much-needed springboard for cricket and provide focus, encouragement and opportunity for thousands of disadvantaged young people.

In addition, the event will be supporting the excellent

Proms heralds record-breaking ticket sales 17TH JULY – 12TH SEPTEMBER 2015

A

mong the most popular Proms, according to early bookings, are a concert of works by US composer and pianist Leonard Bernstein, whose musical scores included West Side Story, Yo-Yo Ma’s Late Night performance of Bach’s complete cello suites and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius with Sir Simon Rattle conducting.

Marin Alsop will return to conduct the Last Night of the Proms, after her 2013 debut. Other leading conductors include Daniel Barenboim, Thomas Dausgaard, Andris Nelsons and Sakari Oramo. Soloists include Alison Balsom, Nicola Benedetti, Alice Coote, Nikolai Lugansky, Mitsuko Uchida and Roderick Williams.

This year’s BBC Proms will also feature concerts inspired by Sherlock Holmes - featuring music mentioned in Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, as well as scores written for TV shows and films about the super-sleuth - including the current BBC TV series starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Mark Gatiss, the show’s co-creator, who also plays Holmes’ brother Mycroft, will read passages from the original adventures.

The John Wilson Orchestra will mark the 100th birthday year of Frank Sinatra with Hollywood’s Seth MacFarlane singing onstage, as well as celebrating Leonard Bernstein’s music for stage and screen.

In one of a series of late night Proms, Radio 1 presenter Pete Tong celebrates 20 years of the Ibiza dance scene in a concert with Jules Buckley and the Heritage Orchestra.

Edward Blakeman, this year’s Proms director, said there would be a “big focus” on piano works with more than 25 solo pianists featuring across the season. The complete Beethoven piano concertos will be performed by Leif Ove Andsnes, while

Prokofiev’s five piano concertos will played at a single prom.

Six of Mozart’s late piano concertos also feature.

For the first time at the Proms, a series of Sunday matinees are being introduced aimed at families. They include concerts celebrating the first year of Ten Pieces, the BBC’s classical music initiative for primary schools. Hosted by Barney Harwood and Dick and Dom, they will be broadcast later in the year on CBBC. James Ainscough, who looks after event venue the Royal Albert Hall, said the popularity of the season came as “no surprise”, citing the broad programme which encompasses large-scale choral works, a Prom featuring Sir David Attenborough’s Life Story, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, pop star Jarvis Cocker and Welsh bassbaritone Bryn Terfel. However, he stressed that tickets remained available for most events, while £5 Promming tickets would still be available on the day. “The Proms has always been about bringing the very best music to the widest number of people,” said Mr Ainscough. “We look forward to hosting a wonderful summer of inspirational performances on the world’s most famous stage.”

I thought I would talk about the five reasons you need regular recare visits to the dentist.

• Dilute sweet acidic juices with water or choose other healthier alternatives. Water is ideal but single-serving-sized low-sugar beverages without food colouring is a start.

• Choose healthy snack choices instead of sweet snacks. Sunflower seeds and nuts are a great choice in small quantities and plain yogurt with raw fruit is better than sweet commercially prepared yogurts.

• For the kids, gradually combine a similar-appearing low-sugar cereal with a favourite sweet one until you’ve switched over to the wholesome one.

And always remember to brush, floss, and rinse. If you have kids, they will always need a reminder ... and follow up to be sure they’re listening! ■

WHY YOU SHOULD BE SUN SMART? As Summer is now upon us and we have been experiencing some warm weather, many people want to develop a ‘healthy suntan’. But is this wise?

elanoma, the deadliest of skin cancers, is now the most common cancer in young British women, according to the latest data from Cancer Research UK (CRUK). Almost every day a woman aged 20-29 is diagnosed with melanoma. It is also the third most common cancer for women in their 30s. is is worrying as, although most skin damage occurs before the age of 20, symptoms don’t usually show up until much later in life.

Cases of melanoma are rising. Currently around 9000 cases are diagnosed in the UK every year, but CRUK believes that by 2024 this will rise to 15,500 cases. Binge tanning, either on holiday or by using sunbeds, are prime reasons for the steep rise in cases.

Ultraviolet light from the sun is the main cause of most skin cancers. Children and young adults, especially those with fair skin, who have been overexposed to the sun, have an increased risk of skin cancer.

More than 100,000 people in the UK are estimated to have non-melanoma skin cancer every year. e good news is that more than 90% of people with non-melanoma skin cancer are completely cured.

skin from sunburn is to use a combination of shade, clothing and sunscreen. • If you want a tan, apply a fake tan lotion or spray instead.

A

grade 1 listed building formerly known as Chenies Palace, it was originally owned by the Cheyne family who were granted the manorial rights, in 1180 the semi fortifield brick manor house which forms the core of the present day structure was built by Sir John Cheyne and was built in approximately 1460, the manor remained in their possession until the end of the 15th century, when it passed to the Bedford family, who were visited at Chenies, by Henry V111 and Queen Elizabeth 1 on numerous occasions.

In the centre of the main house there is an unusual spiral staircase where the handrail has been carved into the brick. In this area footsteps are still heard crossing the gallery: possibly those of Henry V111 walking towards his then Queen, Catherine Howard’s room. e present owners the MacLeod Matthews family bought the estate in the early 1950’s and began the long process of restoration which continues to this day.

Recently the 16th century Pavilion was restored having stood in a ruinous state since the early 19th century.

During the course of the restoration a basement storey was uncovered containing numerous architectural features. e Pavilion now place host to a series of local and national artists throughout the season. Currently it is the turn of talented Cartoonist Graham Lawder- Stone.

Alistair and Elizabeth Macleod Matthews created a series of fine linked gardens, highly decorative, maintained to the highest standards and in perfect keeping with the 15th and 16th Century Manor House. Planted for a long season of colour, spring sees the mass of flowering tulips in 5 8 J U LY 2 0 1 5

the sunken garden, followed by subtle coloured bedding that is matched by delicate toning herbaceous plantings; old fashioned roses and cottage plants are favoured too. From July onwards there is a splendid display of Dahlias of many varieties in the different gardens. ere is always something to enjoy here; formal topiary in the white garden, collections of medicinal and poisonous plants in the Physic Garden, a parterre, an historic turf maze, an intricate yew maze over two meters high and a highly productive kitchen garden.

On her visits here, Queen Elizabeth 1 had a favourite tree and the Royal Oak still survives. e house and gardens are open from April until October inclusive every Wednesdays and ursdays and Bank Holiday afternoons 2-5pm from Home made teas available. ■ • 31st August Bank Holiday we are hosting the Chenies Velo Classique Cycling Event. Whilst traditionally in the past fascias were made out of wood, but now more modern durable alternatives are available. When wood is exposed to prolonged sunshine or rainfall, it can swell and/or crack, with the consequence of the paint starting to peel away, making the entire property look uncared for and in need of repair. It is when gaps

It is important to make certain that ventilation is fitted in the soffit boards, so that your property does not suffer from condensation in the loft space, which can remain undetected until significant damage is done.

Professional companies will rightly advise complete removal of any existing wood material, unless it is in remarkably pristine condition, and you/they can be confident that it will never cause any issues in the future.

Before deciding to try and do a DIY job, consider whether or not you will be 100% safe and confident working at the top of a ladder or on a tower, as replacing cladding, fascias and soffits or guttering and downpipes is not a job for the inexperienced or fainthearted, so you might want to think carefully if you have the knowledge and experience to carry out a safe, aesthetically pleasing and watertight installation.

The Elderly and Disabled: One of the greatest benefits of home automation is for the elderly or disabled individual. Home automation can provide the invisible assistant needed for some people as they continue to do tasks around their homes as their capabilities decline.

Once an overlooked ‘wallflower’ section on the colour chart, grey has shed it’s cold, institutional image, and is proving it’s power to transform any setting. Flirting with its subtle, versatile tones, from crisp charcoal and French grey to shimmering silver and mysterious smoke-grey could be just the way to turn up the heat at home.

e met up with Paresh, owner of Wi-Fi Wizards, who has been running his business since 1989 – a chain of 30 well known high street tech stores ranging from Basildon to Newcastle. As the IT brains behind the group, Paresh had to ensure that his business was using the most cutting edge technology to allow them to deliver the best in service and facilities to their customers. Internet connectivity that was fast and reliable was of utmost importance to him. is responsibility moved into being his expertise, and before long Paresh was being asked by family and friends to assist in home and home office internet setups. Paresh decided that the time was right back in 2013 to set up a new business focussing on just that. is is where our meeting became really interesting. Paresh opened by asking me how many internet connected items I have in my home (two adults, two children). Answering quickly I replied about six – however, on further thought it actually resulted in 16 items.

Pretty scary stuff! And this is only set to grow as the younger members of the family grow up, as we work more from home, as more products become available on the market.

Paresh asked me to describe my internet ‘service’. is was a bit of a grumble. I said from time to time it worked really well, however, of an evening I tend to notice a slower service, it can drop out for no apparent reason, my son will complain of ‘lagging’ on his games console, my daughter cannot get her films to work when sat in a particular room of the house. He asked me what investment I had made in my internet at home. Investment? Well, apart from buying one of those wi-fi boosters (that doesn’t really seem to have made much of an improvement) I had to say none. He asked me then consider the investment I had made in the electrical devises with which I was trying to access the internet. Well naturally that was a different story. Laptops, tablets, phones, MP3 players, TV providers and a games console – a fair amount of investment! And was I getting the best from them? Well, no.

Here is where Paresh was able to advise me on the service that he provides. With his specialised programs he is able to enter a home and immediately show the owner how their wi-fi signal is working, where it is strong and where there are black spots. He can also ascertain how many networks are ‘fighting’ for the same space as commonly, congestion between yours and a neighbour’s internet service provider will be causing slower connections. Using this information Paresh is able to create a 99% coverage of the property with a strong wi-fi signal. We went back to talking about my wi-fi booster. Whilst I can notice that the ‘black-spot’ area can now access the internet, I am now unable

to connect as many devices at the same time and receive the service I require in other areas of the home. e booster itself takes up a chunk of band width simply by being plugged in.

Paresh explained how the work that he does actually uses the electrical circuits already within your home, and creates a wi-fi connection that is as good in the most far flung region of the home as it is in the room directly next to the router. He will make each room work as if it is the host room. He can ensure that wireless printers work as well as wired ones in any room of the house, he can change a movie download time from 20+ hours to just 20 minutes, and he can prevent games consoles from ‘lagging’. In short, he will make the internet that we have in our homes work for us as it should do – so that we almost forget that it is there.

SEA FOOD AND EAT IT!

och Fyne Seafood and Grill restaurant sits at the end of the High Street in Beaconsfield Old Town. Very deceiving from the front, you would be forgiven for thinking it’s fairly small, however, on entering your eyes are drawn through the welcoming front area comprising of a bar and comfortable seating to the main restaurant, with the kitchen on full view at the end of the building. To the side of the restaurant in the rear is a lovely enclosed garden – perfect for these summer evenings.

We enjoyed our meal mid-week, a family of four sitting down to eat at 6.30. As ever, from the moment we arrived the service was perfect, our waiter Adam was very friendly and interacted with the children well. e restaurant had a nice early evening buzz to it, with a few other families in too.

A firm hit with the children was the crispy sprats - British sprat fillets, lemon mayonnaise. It has to be said this is also a firm favourite of mine too. We also enjoyed the herb crusted sardines with wholegrain mustard Sauce. As a family we love to ‘share’ and try all the dishes on the table – we find this is a great way for the children to widen their tastes and find new foods that they love. Our waiter obliged by bringing over a spare plate to help with this! One of the children ate from the children’s menu – not quite able to finish an adults 8 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5

portion size just yet – and enjoyed the crunchy haddock goujons with French fries and mushy peas. It’s lovely for a children’s menu to offer as fresh and tasty food as the adults menu – and so much better for them! e other meals chosen were seafood grill comprising Scottish salmon, gilt head bream, whole king prawn, Scottish scallops, sautéed potatoes and spinach.

Perfect as it gave a selection of the finest foods in one dish – always great when struggling to make a decision. Fish and chips – line-cought haddock (although cod is an option) with mushy peas and really tasty tartare sauce. e third dish was from the daily specials, a hake fillet, pan fried with a hollandaise sauce. All truly delicious.

For dessert, the children’s menu offers traditional icecreams, and we also chose a chocolate ashet – a hazlenut brownie, chocolate parfait, salted caramel ice cream and hot chocolate – which was amazing!

Loch Fyne is something of a hidden treasure in my opinion. e perfect setting for adults and families, with a fabulous offer where children will eat for free from the children’s menu – one child for every main meal ordered from the Al la Carte menu if ordered before 7pm. is has recently been voted (by the children) as our new family favourite place to eat and I for one will not be contesting that decision! ■

Today, the tradition still continues with the nostalgic cherry fairs, held at Seer Green, Frithsden and Flackwell Heath. e opportunity of picking your own cherries from dwarf or semi-dwarf trees is still possible, sparing you the agony of climbing the 21 meters long specially-crafted ladders used in 1925 as featured at the Chiltern Open Air Museum.

• Blend the melons into a thick and smooth puree with a food processor.

• Pass through a fine sieve and season to taste with freshly ground salt and pepper.

• Add a splash of chardonnay vinegar at the end for a little extra flavour.

• Chill for 3 hours until cool.

SOUP 1 kilo of ripe cantaloupe melons A pinch of malden salt 2 tbsp olive oil ½ bunch fresh mint ½ bunch fresh basil A pinch of caster sugar Freshly ground black pepper A splash of madeira wine Asplash of chardonnay white wine vinegar GARNISH 4 slices of good quality parma ham cut into thin strips 1 small charentais melon fresh mint leaves

MELON BALLS Use the melon baller to cut the charentais melon into balls for garnish.

To serve MeThod SOUP Peel, seed and roughly chop the melons.
