isitors to this year’s Chilterns Craft & Design Show (22-25 August) will be spoilt for choice with the tempting array of exquisite arts and crafts made by some of the best British craftsmen and women. The show is set once more against the picture perfect background of Stonor Park, Henley-on-Thames over the August Bank Holiday. Over 200 craftspeople will be showcasing their work over the 3 day weekend, making it a fantastic opportunity to buy handmade wares including gifts, ornaments, jewellery, glass, ceramics and accessories for the home and garden. The event will also feature live music, workshops and activities and delicious food and drink making it a wonderful occasion for all the family to enjoy. This year, the Café Eatons Bar will be on hand to offer foodie treats with Italian coffees, hand-made cakes, afternoon teas and a full bar, so visitors can sip on a glass of bubbly or two in the sumptuous surroundings – the perfect pick me up after a good browse in the craft stalls. If the delicious eats inspire turning a hand to culinary delights, celebrated professional chef Paul Da Costa Greaves will be sharing his mouth watering recipes in the Live Cookery

To complement the Live Cookery Demonstrations, the Chilterns Craft & Design Show will also feature Good Food Live with Specialist Food & Drink Marquees. With truly stunning arrangements, these beautiful gardens will be full of planting ideas to inspire budding or experienced horticulturalists. Plant and gardening pros will be on hand and more than happy to share their expertise, and with a large selection of seasonal plants for sale, visitors will be able to recreate or design their very own show garden. With free entry for under 16’s when accompanied by an adult, the Chilterns Craft & Design
Show is a real family day out. To ensure the children are entertained too, face painting, bouncy castles and a play area are all on hand not to mention live music and craft workshops. The Macmillan Candlelight Ball
alf a million reasons to celebrate for Macmillan Cancer Support in South Buckinghamshire. Macmillan’s Gerrards Cross and District Committee, the only Macmillan committee in south Buckinghamshire, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and during that time has raised over half a million pounds. A special celebration, The Candlelight Ball, will be held at Stoke Place, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire on Saturday September 20th 2014. Tickets for this unique evening cost £50.00, which includes fizz on arrival, a three-course meal with wine, coffee and petit fours. There will be live entertainment and a disco. Along with a gift tree and live auction it promises to be an evening to remember which will raise much needed funds and all profits will go to Macmillan. It’s more important than ever that we continue to support

Macmillan has invested heavily in the local area with 90 healthcare professionals, either in the community or hospitals and is committed to further investment to support people living with cancer. Macmillan provides Information Centres, e.g. in Wexham Park Hospital, and Health Care specialists; such as nurses, doctors and dieticians. Macmillan also funds financial advisors throughout the county, and of course the Support Line can be accessed by all. Cancer is one of the toughest fights most of us will ever have to face. All the money raised from The Candlelight Ball will go directly to people affected by cancer. Just £27 could fund a Macmillan Nurse for an hour; £100 could pay for a Macmillan Grant to help someone with their transport costs for daily radiotherapy.

The Beaconsfield Country Fayre helps to restore the Bishops Chair
he Beaconsfield Country Fayre has been running for seven years since its inception in 2007 and as we are coming up to our eighth year it is worth reflecting on the money the Fayre has raised last year for local charities and how this was spent. Since last year The Country Fayre has given grants of £5,000 each to Iain Rennie Hospice at Home and to the Friends of St. Marys. The Rotary Club, Round Table and Lions Club will each have received £1,667 which is then used to fund local charities such as The Youth Club at the Curzon Centre, the Seniors Luncheon held every Thursday at the Curzon Centre and The Splash project at Alfreston School; the funds given helped to fund a new swimming pool – see http://www.alfristonschool.com/f eatures/project-splash.html The Fayre came together when in 2006 various community groups were looking for a late summer event in the Old Town to rival the May Fair. The idea was to organise a day which every one would enjoy and at the same time raise money for local charities. Seven years on and the Beaconsfield Country Fayre now

attracts 5-6,000 people. The Stretcher Race is the main event of the day where teams of four carry a fifth all dressed in fancy dress around a gruelling course of 8 pubs (watering holes) where the teams stop for a half! There is also a children’s race where teams of four carry a teddy bear, or suitable fluffy toy, along a shorter course in Windsor End stopping for drinks! Other attractions this year include a giant inflatable slide, climbing wall, a fire eater, numerous craft and food stalls, the great balloon race, Classic Cars, children's entertainment, all accompanied by live music provided by the Phoenix Jazz Band. The jazz band has an interesting history in that it is made up of doctors who all happened to be musicians and on duty on the night the tragic Kings Cross Station fire occurred in 1987. They now give up there time to perform a fundraising events, like the Beaconsfield Country Fayre. Beaconsfield’s answer to Crufts will be returning this year and the very popular Dog Show will again be judged by a member of the Kennel Club. New this year there will be a flying display of birds of prey. Each Year the Fayre also
provides free stalls to charities and local community groups such as Food for the Hungry, Brain Tumour, Inner Wheel, British Legion/ Royal Artillery, Beaconsfield Old Town Residents’ Association, Historical Society, London Run for the Homeless, Alpha, Helen and Douglas House. All benefit from the increased awareness and donations received on the day. The Beaconsfield Country Fayre receives a huge help form Iain Rennie Hospice at Home and the Friends of St. Marys, and in turn these two local charities have benefited from the funds of almost £30,000 given to each over the years. This money has been a huge help to these charities and for Ian Rennie Hospice at Home, these funds equate to 220 full days of specialist palliative nursing. £30,000 would also buy 32 syringe drivers necessary to administer symptom control medication or a combination of these and other costs necessary to provide the 24/7 service. This is a huge help to families where the charity believes that every adult and child with advanced, progressive life-limiting illness should receive the care they need to live as fully as possible at home or wherever they choose to be, to the very end of their life.
The Friends of St. Marys look after the building and monuments of St Mary’s and All Saints Church and this year’s donation will be used to restore the Bishops chair. The Bishops Chair was given to St Mary’s Church by Benjamin Disraeli on his ennoblement as the Earl of Beaconsfield in the late 19th Century. The idea is to have this ornate guided chair refurbished by Bucks New University Furniture Restoration Department using the funds provided by the Country Fayre and once restored put the chair on display in Chair Museum. The Beaconsfield Country Fayre will be held on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August 2014 from 11am to 4pm in Windsor End and the Fayre will be opened by Celebratory Baking Queen Mary Berry

River & Rowing Museum to display rare work by John Egerton Christmas Piper, one of Britain’s most significant twentieth century artists
A RARE COLLECTION OF PIPER’S WORKS INCLUDING PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS, AND CERAMICS TO GO ON DISPLAY AT THE RIVER & ROWING MUSEUM enley-On-Thames’ River & Rowing Museum announces rarely seen work by eminent local artist, John Piper, to go on display for a new permanent exhibition this summer.The museum will house a range of exceptional works by one of Britain’s finest artists, including ‘String Solo’, which was first exhibited at the ‘7 & 5 Society’ exhibition in March 1934. As one of his earliest works, this piece is an unusual example from Piper’s abstract phase. The River & Rowing Museum acquired the painting in 2002 from the Piper Estate, having been displayed as part of the John Piper Retrospective at the Tate in 1983. Housed in its original frame, as chosen by Piper himself, this is the first time the item will be on permanent display. From paintings to ceramics, the exhibition will display work donated to the Museum by the Piper Estate, including ‘Ruined Castle, Wester Braikie’. CHILTERN PAINTERS ART EXHIBITION 2014 he Chiltern Painters look forward to welcoming Life Magazine readers to their Autumn Art Exhibition which is again being held in the Market Hall, Old Amersham from Thursday 25th September until Sunday 28th September and entry to the show is free . The Chiltern Painters group, which began life in 1969 with four members, has grown in number to seventeen, plus several honorary members including the well-known singer and entertainer Val Doonican who is also a talented painter. Two of the group’s “founding four” - Ann Way and Ron Evens - are still exhibiting as honorary members more than forty years on. One of the principles on which the Chiltern Painters was founded was that members should be friends as well as artists and through the years this has remained true. Today’s members meet regularly in each other’s homes for talks, demonstrations and critiques by invited professional artists, and during the summer months, weather permitting, the group

paints together outside in various locations around the beautiful Chiltern countryside. There are also occasional joint outings to major exhibitions in London and elsewhere. Originally only consisting of amateur artists, the group now includes both professionals and amateurs, and the scope of the work displayed has widened greatly to include sculptors, print-making and wood-carving. The painters in the group work in watercolour, pastels, oils and acrylics in a variety of styles and formats. The Chiltern Painters chairman, Denis Pannett, is a past President of the prestigious Wapping Group of Artists, an Honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers and a Fellow of the Guild of Aviation Artists, being eight times winner of the prize for the best watercolour in their shows at London’s Mall Galleries. Among his numerous commissions are paintings for the official Christmas Cards for Sandringham House, St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and St Paul’s and Salisbury cathedrals. Other Chiltern Painters have
also regularly exhibited their work at major shows in London and elsewhere. Paintings by Paulene Tunnicliffe have been
hung by the R.O.I, the Pastel Society and the New English Art Club, and a pastel by her won the Annie Longley award. Ronald Wilkinson, a print-maker, engraver and designer of renown and formerly a part-time tutor at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, has exhibited at the Bankside Galleries in London, in Birmingham and at Brunel University. Distinguished architect Ronald Weeks has had drawings and paintings shown at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition and at shows in
Bristol and France. Ann Hogben is a prominent sculptor working in clay, bronze and bronze resin, whose work has been exhibited at the Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows, at R.H.S. Wisley and at Country Living shows in London. A recent work for Ann was a commission for the Royal Marsden Hospital. The Chiltern Painters 2014 Exhibition will celebrate the artists love of the Chiltern scenery. Other paintings, though, will range further afield in subject matter, reflecting members many interests and visits to other parts of the country and the world. In addition to the paintings, prints and sculptures at prices and sizes to suit all wallets and walls, there will be a large and varied selection of greetings cards for sale at a very reasonable £1 each. he River & Rowing Museum has an exciting new exhibition, The Source, displaying work from six contemporary local artists, each offering individual and abstract interpretations of the River Thames. The exhibition celebrates the natural beauty of the river as it flows through picturesque rural towns and eventually shapes the Capital. The Source runs from 20 September 2014 until 18 January 2015 and showcases work by the Parkbench Group, a new artist collective from Oxfordshire. These six well-known local artists are all based in the Cotswolds, where the River Thames begins its journey as an insignificant trickle before coursing and curving through the Capital. The work embraces the vibrancy of the river and reveals unique, abstract and vivid interpretations of Britain’s longest running waterway. The Source focuses on the river’s beginnings, the landscapes and settlements around it. Drawing from their personal memories, the artists present work demonstrating their individual experiences of the river and of living in the Thames Valley.

Her paintings have become progressively more abstract over the years, though always drawing from landscape elements, taking advantage of the unexpected. Penny Prince’s work in this exhibition shows a deep interest in vestiges and layers of The Thames, capturing a moment in time. Her abstract paintings allow for interpretation, they do not offer their meaning immediately or easily. The work demands that viewers take time, consider, and allow their imagination to run. SUE RAE
Sue Rae explores the experience of simple river travel. Rae’s work mirrors both tangible and intangible memories of places. Her prints explore subtlety and contrast of mark, translucency and density of colour. MAGGIE SHAW
Maggie Shaw’s works depicts a profound fascination in energy and tension in nature from trees, rivers and stone. She paints her canvases without tools, using only controlled hand-pressure to directly transfer her physical energy onto the canvas. Often a solitary existence with long hours of dedicated silence (though audio books keep him company), Renshaw illustrated his point by recalling the masters of old who painted in winter by candlelight, crouched over their boards. Today Renshaw has quite a different problem than candlelight vversus ersus electricity on his hands with the blistering heat warming the studio to temperatures well well above comfort. The artist howev ever er is in good spirits; he moved into the space only 18 months ago and is still luxuriating in it. Boar oards ds are leant carefully against the wall and on work benches in var various stages of undress; undr ess; primed, under-painted and partially detailed. The artist demonstrates that he paints in oils from back to front, mixing just seven seven colours primarily to start with the skies – the foundation of ever every completed work. It is this heavenly heav enly aspect of his work to which the exhibition owes its name. The flurry of activity is in aid of the approaching exhibition date; Saturday 20th September will celebrate the culmination of months of preparation and perseverance to assemble a collection of original paintings which will expose the breadth of Renshaw’s themes. As the only dedicated show of his work in the country this year year ear,, the artist has chosen this ev event ent to rev eveal eal a new chapter in the story dedicated to Doris and Ted, the protagonists of the Northern Romance series which hav havee captiv captivated ated an ever evergrowing audience. The decision echoes his debut exposition at the Hertfordshir dshiree based gallery in 2010, during which collectors first caught sight of the star crossed lovers. Little did Renshaw expect the overwhelming reaction to these fiv e paintings, inspired inspir ed by his desir desiree to introduce emotional narratives to his work. The catalyst was his family, family, three generations of romantic and par parental ental love stories. The unconditional commitment of Renshaw’s grandmother Peggy to her husband Lawrence even even after his pr prematur ematuree passing in his early forties left ematur a lasting impression on the artist as a youth.

Max makes an appearance whilst I am there and it is clear that immediately Renshaw has taken his artist hat off and put his father hat on. The two talk about directions to an unknown destination, before Max makes a hasty exit fearing he is late. Renshaw checks his phone periodically thereafter eafter,, pausing between brushstrokes. The family frequently trav avel el together together,, with Renshaw plotting how to softly negotiate his agenda to scale mountains, visit lakesides and rise at dawn in the name of inspiring his art. His landscapes subtly question the viewer; is the patch of sunlight streaming through the clouds the storm passing to leavee a perfect twilight or is it the leav last glow before the squall? Collectors have have been charmed, dazzled and genuinely mov moved by the original paintings he produces. Renshaw admits, “I’m conscious I’ve been asked to do limited editions as w well ell and though I’m not interested in producing prints I want to giv givee collectors the opportunity to acquire something a little bit different.� I learn that a single limited edition work will be exclusiv clusively ely available available at the exhibition, and a ‘Southern Romance’ may be on the horizon. Having worked as a professional artist for a decade and recently celebrating his fortieth birthday last November ember,, I ask him about his ambitions; what would he like to achieve next? He smiles at me conspiratorially and replies, “the sky is not the limit’. A LEGAL LULLABY ENSURES PEACE OF MIND FOR NEW PARENTS
f someone in your family is expecting the patter of tiny feet, then prepare for life to change in a big way. Of course, the early days will fly by in a routine of feeding, bathing and grabbing a few hours of much-needed sleep. As the child grows up however, there are many financial and legal considerations to think about alongside the more day-to-day battles, such as persuading them to eat their vegetables or tearing them away from the latest social media trend. According to an annual report from insurer LV=, the cost of raising a child and supporting them through university until the age of 21, is now over £227,000, which includes food and clothing, hobbies and education. Planning ahead and preparing for both the expected and the unexpected is something that the private client practice at B P Collins believes is essential. Senior associate Christine Moore, explains: “We know any parent will be completely focused on their latest arrival, but it’s important they take time out to consider how to protect and support their expanding family in the longer term. “There are many things new parents – and grandparents – can do at an early stage to help secure a child’s financial future, for example, by setting up a trust to pay for school fees, or dividing an estate in a particular way. “It’s also important that where there are already children from a previous relationship, careful consideration is given to looking after their best interests in the event of something

happening to a parent.” As a new parent, consider the following tips: • Make a will to ensure your children are adequately provided for in the event of your death. You may have additional children in the future, so ask your solicitor for the best way to include them in the will. • Appoint guardians for any children under 18 so, if the worst happens, you know who will take responsibility for looking after them. • If grandparents are keen to help, then talk to them about Inheritance Tax planning. Putting a trust in place now can help with future expenses such as school or university fees. • Although children can demand their inheritance at 18, many parents take the view that they would prefer their children to be older and more responsible before managing a large sum of money. Trusts can be written into wills to ensure that any monies are only inherited at a later date, although they could potentially be accessed to pay for items such as university fees. • Where there are children from different marriages or previous relationships, it’s important to consider how to treat them fairly, especially if one child is likely to inherit from another source such as a grandparent. A solicitor can help you explore the best way to achieve this. • This can also apply where an individual wishes his or her children to inherit capital from an estate rather than it passing outright to a spouse (particularly if it is a second marriage). Ensuring there are flexible trusts within a will can ensure assets are protected. • When dividing an estate between children, the ability to include lifetime gifts can be a helpful way for parents to help their children out financially, for example, when they are buying their first home. Saying ‘I do’ later in life ecently released statistics reveal that an increasing number of so-called “baby boomers” are marrying after the age of 65. According to information from the Office for National Statistics, 25% more men and 20% more women are now saying “I do” as they reach their retirement years and one in 10 of over 65s is marrying for the first time. Family lawyer Laura McSherry, says while cupid’s arrow may strike a little later for some, others are likely to be marrying for more practical reasons. “It may be that this trend is driven by increased life expectancy and the desire to share the years of retirement with a spouse. The change in social attitudes towards re-marriage means that there is no longer a stigma about marrying twice or more,” she said. “But while the majority are likely to marry for conventional reasons, it can’t go unnoticed that being married is much more advantageous when it comes to tax planning and avoiding paying inheritance tax (IHT).” Laura explains that assets that pass on death to a spouse are exempt from IHT, and the IHT allowance, currently set at £325,000, is still available to pass assets to others. Additionally, if not all of a deceased spouse’s allowance is used, the remaining can be utilised by the surviving spouse, and so increase the amount that the surviving spouse can leave before incurring a liability to IHT. She says older couples who marry are likely to have a more realistic and pragmatic view of married life, especially those who have been married before and have children from a previous relationship. “They will often consider, at the time of their marriage, what

would happen to the assets they built up prior to meeting their intended future spouse if things do not work out,” she continued. “This is especially important if there are children from an earlier relationship as they will often want to safeguard resources for their own offspring.” She recommends considering a pre-nuptial agreement specifying what should happen in the event of the relationship breaking down and says this can also help a couple to avoid the indignity of a squabble and potentially protracted court proceedings about who gets what. Although pre-nuptial agreements are not legally binding in this country, Laura says considerable weight is given to them and, even where an agreement cannot be upheld in its entirety, a judge is required to make an award as close as possible to the terms of the agreement in order to meet the claimant spouse’s needs. When drawing up a pre-nuptial agreement there are strict criteria to be met, including ensuring that no undue influence is used on either party. Full and detailed consideration also needs to be given to the terms of the agreement, to ensure it will meet both parties’ needs in the event of divorce and separation, while still protecting each spouse’s own resources. HAY FEVER HELL ay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, affects one in five people in the UK. According to John Collard, clinical director of Allergy UK, hay fever is a type of allergy. It happens when your body makes antibodies in response to certain triggers, such as pollen. It’s most common in children and, particularly, teenagers, but you can develop hay fever at any age. The symptoms usually include sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and stuffy nose.

What causes hay fever? In Britain, hay fever is mainly caused by grass pollen. Around 95% of hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen. Tree pollen can cause hay fever too. Around a quarter of hay fever sufferers are allergic to tree pollen. Mould spores and weed pollen can also trigger symptoms.The pollens that cause hay fever vary from person to person and region to region. The amount of pollen in the air will affect how bad your hay fever is. There’s more likely to be more pollen in the air on hot, dry, windy days than on cool, damp, rainy days. Research shows that pollution, such as cigarette smoke or car exhaust fumes, also makes some allergies worse. When is hay fever worst? The time of year at which you begin to experience hay fever symptoms depends on the types of pollen you’re allergic to. Trees release their pollen in March to early May while grasses release pollen from late May to early August. Weeds and certain shrubs release their pollen in late summer. The hay fever season can therefore last from March to October. And if you’re unlucky enough to be allergic to more than one type of pollen, you may only have just two or three months without symptoms in the winter before the cycle starts again. Tips to relieve hay fever Avoiding exposure to pollen is the best way to reduce the allergic symptoms of hay fever: Keep windows shut at night and first thing in the morning Stay indoors when the pollen count is high (between 50 and 150) Wear wraparound sunglasses. Put some petroleum jelly just inside your nostrils to trap some of the pollen. Don’t mow the grass or sit in fields or large areas of grass. Wash your hands and face regularly. Avoid exposure to other allergens, such as pet fur, or environmental irritants, such as insect sprays or tobacco smoke. Hay fever treatment As with most allergies, the best way to control hay fever is to avoid the triggers. However, it’s difficult to avoid pollen, particularly during the summer. Even straightforward hay fever can be debilitating, causing runny eyes, sleepless nights, bunged-up nose and headaches. A range of over-thecounter products can treat the symptoms of hay fever, including tablets, nasal sprays, eye drops and creams. Antihistamines are the usual treatment for the main symptoms, such as itchy, watery eyes and runny nose, while steroid nasal sprays are the main treatment for a stuffy nose. Hay fever in pregnancy Hay fever during pregnancy can be a particular problem. Hormonal changes make nasal congestion more common during pregnancy, and this often gets worse during hay fever season. Pregnant women are also advised not to take some hay fever medicines. Hay fever and asthma Speak to your GP or pharmacist before you decide on a hay fever treatment. It’s particularly important to speak to your GP if you have asthma. Hay fever often makes asthma symptoms worse. If this happens, you may need to increase the dosage of your asthma medication. 48

An hour later, she carefully cuts me out and massages in any oil remnants. It was here that our sister duo started to develop the passion and drive that would determine the outcome of their shared dream and vision to build their own successful hair salon. For Louise and Teresa, continuing their training is a very important part of their focus and passion. Having both obtained their NVQ Levels 2 & 3 in Hairdressing whilst in their early 20’s, they both then spent some time working in London, learning the trade and gaining the required skills to become great stylists. Their desire to constantly improve their skills has led them both to attend and take part in a wide variety of courses including L’Oreal Colour Keys, Steven Goldsworthy Hair Up, Advanced Cutting and Colour and Goldwell Perming, to name just a few. Teresa (left) travelled overseas in 2006 and was lucky enough to visit Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia. Whilst she was abroad, Teresa took the opportunity to broaden her experience by working in salons and learnt how to cut, style and colour various hair types and textures. Around her work commitments, Teresa was also able to take in her surroundings and to absorb all of the cultural highlights that each country had to offer. Teresa’s time overseas saw her gain some very valuable knowledge and experience and only increased her passion and desire to succeed in business. Louise (right) continued with her studies in the UK, only this time she decided to head in the direction of becoming an educator herself. Having completed several teaching qualifications, Louise was rewarded for all of her hard work and

dedication when she was awarded the prestigious “Educator of the Year award” in 2004. This in turn has encouraged Louise and Teresa to work with and help develop the skills of their “home grown” stylists. In 2009 Louise and Teresa opened a franchise salon, which provided them with a wealth of knowledge and experience both in running a business and in nurturing a very talented team of stylists. Over the following three years the sisters guided their salon to being the best in the company, which was confirmed when they were awarded their first award as two successful business women which was “Franchisees of the Year 2012”. With the confidence, talent, experience and drive, 2014 sees the Klamer sister’s open their first salon of their very own. With an amazing team by their side, they have been able to take this exciting step in order to spread their wings and begin to truly fulfil their dreams. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR SHINGLES?
Shingles (herpes Zoster) is an infection of the nerves that supply certain areas of the skin. It presents as a painful rash and is especially common in older people and affects a specific part of the body, sometimes the face and eyes.
Treatment can ease the symptoms of shingles. In some cases it is appropriate to dispense antiviral medication. Most episodes of shingles clear up in two to four weeks. IS THERE A VACCINE TO PREVENT SHINGLES?
IS SHINGLES THE SAME AS CHICKENPOX?
Both shingles and chickenpox are caused by the same virus. You can therefore catch chickenpox from someone with shingles, but only if you have not had chickenpox before. Likewise you can only have shingles if you have had chickenpox. WHAT CAUSES SHINGLES?
Shingles is caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus which also causes Chickenpox. After having chickenpox some of the virus survives and lies dormant for many years, re-emerging as shingles at a time when the person’s immune system is weakened. This can happen due to increasing age, stress or certain medications.

s students are getting ready to move into their rented accommodation this September, landlords are having to ensure that their homes are sorted in time for the new tenants. Figures from QHS, the local heating experts, show that one in three private tenants (34%) has faced a household problem in the last twelve months, with boiler faults and other central heating problems the most common. First things first, decide on what theme or era you would like your home to be. Some fun ideas for different decades are the kitchy 50’s, the mod look of the 60’s, or the bohemiam look of the 70’s.

retro style usually has a fun, lively feel to it, with bright colours, wild designs and an overall sense of “flair�. Just think back to the fabrics and textures during the 60’s and you’ll immediately get a sense of where your decor needs to go to truly capture the essence of retro style. Because retro-style requires such a bold approach, it also requires a certain personality to pull it off. There’s nothing laid-back or casual about retro-style decorating. On the contrary, it is loud, busy and most definitely “funky�. Trying to furnish your entire home strictly from a specific era can become quite tricky, so you could mix the old with new, and accessorise with items that complement the era you are looking to portray. So, how can you bring retro style decorating into your home? Let’s take a look at some common elements of this energising decorating style: Colors in Retro Decors One of the easiest ways to give a room a retro feel is to choose retro colours. Fortunately, that’s not hard to do. Avocado green is by far the most popular retro colour choice, followed closely by mustard yellow and combinations of black, white and red. In addition, purple and hot pink both make a great addition to your retro decor. Don’t be surprised to find items that have a little of everything, with mixes of bright orange, green, indigo blue, and yellow on one single piece. Tie-dyed fabrics, checkered patterns, and elaborate paisley prints were also a trademark of the era.

Music helped shape this decade as rock music mixed with disco fever, disco balls and disco dancing hit the groovy scene. Many 70’s homes were light, airy and free in reflection of the movements that were happening; activism, freedom and self-expression. There are many ways to integrate elements of 1970’s decor into your home without over doing it – there is the traditional retro style, or you may prefer for a more modern contemporary retro theme. Get the 70’s look: Colour: Building your colour scheme around the hippie, ethnic style which would give you a more neutral palette of earth tones i.e. beige, sage green, sand, brown, mustard, burnt orange, navy, plum, aubergine, wine and deep shades of purple. Brown and cream with orange and avocado were the most popular colour choices of the seventies. Of course there is the disco vibe, additional colours of silver and gold that you could fuse into your design ideas. Walls: Look for a fabulous wallpaper which you could add to your room or use to make a stunning mural. Vinyl wallpaper was popular during the 70’s however today there are many incredible designs that are paper or fabric backed. Patterned fabrics also make great murals so enjoy looking through lots of ranges before you make your final selection. They are a real nostalgic look and could be used in a very modern way within your design.
Retro Style Furniture Retro style furniture has an abstract feel to it, with each piece almost fighting for the limelight as the focal point of the room. Sofas are broad and elongated with multi-colored throw pillows for an added dash of colour. Shiny chrome barstools with bright red seats draw your attention to a diner-style kitchen while Mitt chairs and puzzle-piece ottomans provide unique seating for guests.
Decor: Look for some tubular chrome or polished steel pieces of furniture to add to your look. Bean bags are also a great addition. Super comfy! Retro style interiors have lots of big pattern so mix and match fabrics i.e. upholstery to sofas, scatter cushions and curtains. It is daring to have lots of pattern in the one room however, you can combine them as long as you link in tones so that your design look tasteful.
The Seventies retro style interiors and design is considered very trendy these days. It is an exciting blend of hippie, beatnik, and boho chic with the funky kitsch designs from the sixties.

s long ago as the late 17th century we were enjoying champagne but it threw a heavy sediment and the only way to drink it was in a long thin glass. In such a ve essel the sediment sank to the bottom, you sipped off the top inch or so, threw the sediment away y,, rinsed the glass and started again. The trouble was that the only fine glassware we had came from the continent and this proved to be to too delicate for the rumbustious English. Fortunately in the 1670’s George Ravenscroft applied for a patent for his ‘glass of lead’ which contained a proportion of lead oxide. He found that this created a material that was stronger and more durable than that from the continent. This happy development e allo a wed us to revel in the joys of champagne from flutes long after the wine makers had eliminated the heavy sediment. Until indeed the beginning of the 19th century when the ‘coup’ or saucer shape glass became unive ersally popu popular. There are various stories as to why this happened, but my

own favour ou o ite puts the blame firmly on George Prince of Wales when as Prince Re egent he was hosting a large dinner party in his beloved Pavillion at Brighton. A dessert was served in the traditional saucer shaped, short stem bowl. The Prince didn’t like the pudding and slung it over his shoulder, demanding that champagne be put into his bowl to refresh his palate. Protocol meant that the entire company had to follow suit and I love to t think of the scene with forty or so guests all throwing their puddings over their shoulder and requesting champagne. But for whatever reason, we drank champagne out of saucers until the early years after the Second World War when gradually we returned to the good old flute. My first glass of champagne was in a dimpled half-pint mug. I wonder what the Prince would have thought of that. BLUSH GOOSEBERRY
and elederflower fool
THE HUMBLE BRITISH GOOSEBERRY IS SADLY IN A STATE OF DECLINE, WITH AVAILABILITY LIMITED TO FEW SUPERMARKETS, THE ODD FARMERS MARKET AND, OF COURSE, OUR OWN GARDENS IF GROWN. THE BLUSH VARIETY IS LITTLE SWEETER AND PRETTIER AND CAN BE ENJOYED WITH THE DELICATE FLAVOUR OF ELDERFLOWER IN THIS SIMPLE RECIPE, AT THE RESTAURANT WE PAIR THIS DELICIOUS FOOL WITH A GINGER SHORTBREAD, HOWEVER, A GOOD QUALITY BISCUIT WITH A CRISP SNAP WILL EQUALLY SUFFICE.
Ingredients (Serves 4)
Stock syrup 150g water 150g white wine 150g sugar 30g fresh ginger ½ lemon, peeled ½ lime, peeled 1 vanilla pod, split 15 mint leaves 5 heads of elderflower (optional) or a splash of elderflower cordial Gooseberry puree 500g blush gooseberries 200g stock syrup

Fool 400g double cream 200g gooseberry puree from above 2 gelatine leaves Splash of white wine Juice of 1 lime to taste
Method Stock Syrup 1. Mix together all the ingredients in a large pan and bring to a near simmer and leave to infuse for 20 minutes. Strain and refrigerate. Gooseberry Fool 2. Make the gooseberry puree by gently simmering the gooseberries in the strained stock syrup until just at the point of bursting. 3. Blend gently in a food processor, leaving
some pieces of fruit for texture 4. Soak 2 leaves of gelatine in a little of the warm stock syrup 5. Lightly whip the double cream 6. Fold in the gooseberry puree reserving 200g of puree for layering 7. Strain gelatine mixture and gently fold into the cream 8. Add a splash of white wine and lime juice to taste 9. Gently fold again then place in serving glasses layering the glass with alternating layers of puree and fool and refrigerate for 1 hour before serving

A crisp Sauvignon Blanc or German Riesling will work well with the floral flavours of the gooseberry for this recipe.
