CHEF LAURIE GEAR

May Recipe & Kitchen News

The magical month of May has arrived, and after all the rain, we are all ready for the anticipation of the balmier days to come. Early strawberries are flourishing, lemon thyme, bergamot, garden peas and beans are all beginning to come through. It is also the season for the arrival of English watercress. This peppery

green leaf is bursting with vitamins and minerals and is a great superfood. Watercress is one of the oldest known leaf vegetables and an aquatic plant related to garden cress, mustard, and wasabi. It can be used raw for salads, or lightly blanched for uses similar to spinach or as here for a delicious soup perfect for the spring season.

RECIPE: WATERCRESS AND PEA SOUP WITH CRÈME

Ingredients

Serves 4

• 25 g unsalted butter

• 100 g white onion finely chopped

• 1 stick celery finely chopped

• 1 white of leek finely chopped

• 1 clove of garlic finely chopped

• 150gm fresh or frozen podded peas

• 380 gm washed watercress tough stalks removed

• 100 gm spinach leaves

• 750 ml boiling water

• 250 gm ice cubes

• 100 ml Crème fraiche to serve

• 1 bunch of chives chopped

• Sea salt and freshly ground pepper to season

Method

Artichoke goes Wild!

Exclusive Spring

Wilderness Feast at Micklefield Hall, Sarratt

Wednesday 15th May 2024

FRAICHE AND CHIVES

1. Pick the watercress leaves and then poach them. Bring a pot of water to the boil and place the watercress in for approx. 1 minute. Swiftly take the watercress out of the water and immediately plunge into ice cold water. When cool squeeze out excess water.

2. Place a large saucepan on a gentle heat and melt the butter and gently cook the diced onion, celery, and leek and diced garlic for 2-3 minutes or until soft but not coloured.

3. Increase the heat to high and add the watercress and a large pinch of salt cover with a lid and cook for 30 seconds. Add the spinach and peas and cook for 1-2 minutes or until wilted. The spinach will add round ness to the peppery flavour of the watercress.

4. Pour on the boiling water and simmer for 2-3 minutes then remove from the heat and add the ice. This quick cooling will not only retain the vivid colour and flavour but will also maximise the vitamins and minerals.

5. Pour half the soup into a liquidiser and blend until smooth and then pass through a fine sieve. Transfer to a clean pan and then repeat with the second half.

6. When ready to serve add sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

ELYSTAN STREET

Unobtrusively superlative is an almost impossible thing to pull off in a restaurant, but Elystan Street achieves it with a combination of flawless food and a space that makes everyone feel wittier and prettier. Opened by acclaimed restaurateur Rebecca Mascarenhas and chef Phil Howard in September 2016, the restaurant had been in business for just 6 months before receiving their Michelin star, which they’ve retained ever since. It is a rare feat to create a restaurant that appeals in equal measure to a loyal, local clientele as well as to those who have made this a destination spot. Alongside Phil Howard, the head chef is Michael Olive who hails from Buckinghamshire, and has been in the role for nearly a year, having previously worked at The Ledbury and at Elystan Street as a sous chef earlier in his career.

Elystan Street offers one of the best value set lunch and early evening menus in London – priced at just £35.00 for 3 courses. And if that doesn’t grab your fancy, you can always stray “ off piste” and enjoy the full a la carte menu. Phil and his

kitchen team are maestros of seasonal food, so you’ll always get something on this menu that tastes better than it really ought to, because, unlike Paddington Bear, it hasn’t been shipped in from darkest Peru in the middle of winter. Elystan Street’s food is so sharply sophisticated yet so unassumingly generous that it’s worth investigating quite how it works so exceptionally well. Phil’s cooking is reputed for its harmony of flavours, rather than technical wizardry or innovation.

The wine list at Elystan Street has been brilliantly constructed by sommelier, Juliet Doughty, who is usually on hand with sensible, yet enthusiastic and creative dish pairing choices. Perhaps it has something to do with the balance of talent between kitchen and service, but it feels like everything and everyone here is working hard to make eating here truly pleasurable, whether it is a relaxed family Sunday lunch, a general catch up with mates, or a corporate dinner in the sublime private dining room.

Restaurants open and close all the time – it’s a precarious business – but this one will be around for decades to come – it’s a gem and worth the detour, wherever you are in the Capital.

Pension Sharing on Divorce

Is your former spouse entitled to 50%?

What is Pension Sharing?

Pension assets can often be one of the primary assets in a matter and pension sharing therefore forms a common feature of financial settlement on divorce in England and Wales.

Whilst there are various ways to manage pensions upon divorce, pension sharing usually materialises as a Pension Sharing Order, whereby a portion of one party’s pension fund is transferred to the other party’s chosen pension provision.

A Pension Sharing Order is a favoured approach, as it provides a clean break between the parties as the pension assets are split at the time of the Order being made, meaning that each party can decide what to do with their share separately. Emma Eastwood, B P Collins’ family solicitor, explores the factors considered in pension sharing and what it could mean for you.

How is Pension Sharing calculated?

Common misconceptions are that pension provisions accrued outside of the marriage are automatically ringfenced and the duration of the marriage are the only factors considered. However, additional points are taken into account, such as the period of cohabitation prior to the marriage; whether there are blatant disparities between parties’ pension provisions and the importance of trying to achieve financial independence for the parties in both their working life and retirement, following their divorce.

What does this mean for me? Whilst each matter is fact specific, there are legal arguments that can be made for the Court to conclude that ringfencing pensions is appropriate, particularly if the marriage was short and the parties are young with the ability to maximise their future pension contributions. However, parties must prepare for the possibility that the Court may disregard arguments based upon pre-marital contributions, specifically in cases of lengthy marriages or where one party has a limited earning capacity.

The Pension Advisory Group provides helpful guidance, appreciating that a ‘one size fits all’ approach is not possible. It suggests that in cases where parties’ needs are pivotal, it would be wrong to apportion pensions without first considering the income needs of each party upon retirement. In addition, the guidance suggests that whilst in some cases, arguments of apportionment may be justified, the date for allocation will “almost without exception” be the date from when the couple started living together, and not the date of the marriage.

In many cases, and certainly where pension assets exceed £100,000, it is advisable to instruct a Pension on Divorce Expert (“PODE”) to obtain advice as to the true value of the pension assets and the fairest way of distributing them, prior to entering into discussions regarding a financial settlement.

If you would like to speak in confidence to the family team at B P Collins regarding the above or any other family matter, you can email enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 889995. www.bpcollins.co.uk

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The

higher echelons

of

journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Shaping Future Leaders: Character Education at Gateway School

The initial years of a child’s life are pivotal, profoundly shaping their future selves.

At Gateway School, we recognise the transformative power of early Character Education, setting the stage for lifelong success and societal contribution.

Why is Character Education crucial in the Early Years?

During these formative years, the brain forges essential connections that last a lifetime. Early Character Education instills enduring habits and values, influencing a child’s conduct well into their adult years.

What are the benefits of Character Education in the Early Years?

Focusing on virtues and emotional literacy, Character Education enhances young children’s social and emotional wellbeing, establishing a foundation for positive mental health now and in the future. It promotes healthy relationships with peers, teachers, and family members, and supports a nurturing social environment. Moreover, the virtues and values children learn early on pave the way for academic achievement and ongoing educational pursuits.

Building a foundation of character

In the early years at Gateway School, we prioritise essential virtues like kindness, respect, and responsibility. Through storytelling, role-playing, and positive interactions with adults, we model positive character traits and values. We emphasise fundamental social skills, such as sharing, listening, cooperating, and making friends, to build a solid foundation for every child.

At Gateway School, our commitment to Character Education extends beyond the classroom. We utilise outdoor learning and or school farm school experience to enrich our curriculum. These settings provide unique opportunities for children to practice kindness, respect, and responsibility in a real-world context, engaging with nature and caring for animals. These experiences not only foster a love for the environment but also enhance children’s problem-solving skills, independence and cooperation with others.

Children also learn to understand and respect their feelings and those of others, supporting their emotional development and fostering a positive self-image. Additionally, we encourage personal responsibility, helping children take ownership of their actions and grow in independence, resilience and perseverance when challenges arise. Secure your child’s place for a brighter future.

To discover more about our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and how we nurture young learners, or to book a place for your child in our Preschool or Reception classes for September 2024, visit website to arrange a tour gatewayschool-bucks.co.uk or call our Bursar Helen on 01494 862407 to book your place.

Shining a Light on Teaching

Whether you are a new graduate or interested in switching careers, qualified and ambitious teachers are in high demand. In all types of school - whether primary or secondary - there are numerous career opportunities for those who want to make a difference in the lives of our young people.

And whether it’s via a government funded, tax-free bursary of between £10,000 and £29,000, a student loan or an apprenticeship, there are a wide range of different ways to fund the training necessary to become a teacher. Age, too, is no barrier!

At Astra SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) we work with over 60 primary and secondary partner schools and other local education providers across Buckinghamshire and beyond to train and nurture the next generation of teachers. Now in our tenth year, over 500 teachers have been awarded QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) with us. We aim to provide training and school placements that are carefully tailored to meet individual needs.

We offer various routes into teaching, all via a school-based course with an exceptional professional studies programme, in order to gain your QTS and PGCE. We are also able to offer part-time training on our primary routes and many of our secondary courses. We offer places both on salaried and bursary-led/unsalaried routes.

One of the great benefits to the Astra route is the blend of school based and academic training. Working with Bath Spa University we also offer the PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) qualification which

is the gold standard of teacher education. Astra’s programme is tailored towards teaching in schools in the local area. Training approaches include seminars and lectures, trainee presentations and assignments. The course is backed up by educational research, along with practical classroom based training. All trainees are supported by experienced school based mentors throughout the course, who will help trainees develop the knowledge and skills to become a confident, credible and successful classroom teacher.

We are also delighted to be starting a post-graduate apprenticeship programme starting September 2024. This offers a postgraduate-level qualification, no tuition fees, and the opportunity to earn while you learn. It is particularly suitable for those wishing to train in primary schools.

For life after training, it’s worth noting that we have over 90% employment and completion rates for all years to date, with the majority of our trainees securing employment in schools within Buckinghamshire and the surrounding counties.

So if you live or work locally and are looking for a fulfilling role, Astra offers you a rich career journey where you can make a real difference to young people in some of the very best schools in the UK. You’ll need at a minimum a good degree, GCSEs in English and Maths and a genuine interest in working in education.

If you would like to know more about our programmes and how to apply, we look forward to hearing from you.

The rise of the pre-nup

In today’s world, marriage has evolved vastly to keep up with the modern times. As societal norms shift and individuals prioritise personal and financial independence, the once-taboo topic of pre-nuptial agreements (pre-nups) has gained traction, particularly among millennial couples or those entering a second marriage.

The millennial approach

Traditionally associated with the affluent and older generations, pre-nups are increasingly embraced by millennials as a practical means of safeguarding assets, protecting businesses, and outlining financial expectations before tying the knot. According to recent trends, this demographic is reshaping the landscape of pre-nup season, transforming it into a proactive step towards financial transparency and security.

Equality and open communication

One key factor driving the rise in pre-nups among millennials is their approach to marriage as a partnership of equals. Unlike previous generations, millennials tend to prioritise open communication and equal roles in their relationships. For them, discussing finances, assets, and potential scenarios before marriage is not a sign of distrust but rather a responsible and pragmatic decision.

Navigating second marriages

Moreover, the rise in second-time marriages has contributed to the popularity of pre-nups. With many individuals entering into marriage with existing assets, properties, and even children from previous relationships, pre-nuptial agreements offer a way to address complex financial matters and protect the interests of all parties involved.

Debunking misconceptions

Despite becoming more popular, pre-nuptial agreements still spark debate. Some argue that they undermine the romantic aspect of

marriage and perpetuate a transactional view of relationships. However, others argue pre-nups can strengthen by fostering honest communication, trust, and mutual respect.

The rise of pre-nuptial agreements among millennial couples and

those entering second marriages reflects a shift towards a more pragmatic and transparent approach to modern relationships. Rather than viewing pre-nups as a sign of distrust or cynicism, many couples see them as a proactive measure to protect their assets, clarify financial expectations, and ensure a smoother path forward in their journey together. As the stigma surrounding pre-nuptial agreements continues to diminish, they are likely to become an increasingly common tool for couples seeking to build secure and sustainable partnerships in the modern-day world.

When working on a pre-nuptial agreement it is essential that you ensure that it is likely to be upheld by the Court in the future, should the relationship come to an end. There is no guarantee that it will be binding and for this reason it is essential that you seek independent legal advice.

How Blaser Mills can help

If you are discussing arrangements with your partner, we advise you to get in touch with a solicitor for independent legal advice as soon as possible before your planned marriage. We will help to prepare the agreement for you, ensuring we tailor it to your needs and incorporate important details like conditions for review, changes to income or children and childcare.

G\ GP Consultations & Home Visits

Our fantastic team of GPs pride themselves on providing the time needed to explore the health issues for each patient. They love building relationships with patients, not only because they make for an enjoyable career, but because they are crucial to providing an exceptional quality of care. We still believe that face-to-face consultations are best, whether in clinic or on home visits for those not mobile or just not well enough to travel and provide remote consulting where necessary.

@ Health Screening

Health Screening is the perfect way to assess your health and either obtain the reassurance you need or identify ..! health issues early which can be proactively managed. Screening provides the opportunity to improve health outcomes and can even be life saving when unknown serious issues are identified. Explore our cancer screening, heart health screening and much more.

Make health screening part of your life.

@ Specialist Health

With a wide array of specialist interests, our GPs can explore specific health issues in much more detail, often without the need to see a specialist.

Women's health including the menopause, men's health including testosterone deficiency and prostate issues, palliative care, lifestyle medicine and minor skin surgery are amongst some of the many specialist interests our GPs have.

TRUE FAMILY MEDICINE

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH

The world of healthcare is changing at a rapid rate. New devices, new treatments, virtual health, and "Dr Google" are growing at speed. Telemedicine over video and telephone has become a "convenient" way to provide healthcare, but we and our families are too important to rely only on convenience for our health alone.

Two things are for certain. Having a steady, continuous and two-way relationship with your family doctor is critical to obtaining the exceptional day to day healthcare that we all deserve. This is not just a relationship built on illness but one in which regular routine checks and preventative testing allow u s to maintain healthy habits and health parameters. Secondly, becoming proactive and taking a preventative approach to our health is a must. Our reactive approach to date has served us well but for those of us who want to stay healthier for longer, we must take control - health screening is our first answer and needs to be a staple part of our lives. Obtaining an assessment of our current health and screening for early signs of illness puts us on the front foot and in a position to take control.

Here at The Doctor's Lounge, we aim to provide both of these crucial aspects to healthcare alongside fast access to appointments and investigations, all provided within a comfortable environment with an exceptional level of service to match.

We pride ourselves on offering face-to-face consultations as a priority, but of course offer remote services for those particular scenarios where appropriate. Home visiting is crucial for those less mobile, when we are too unwell to travel, or even just for convenience.

Calming Exam Stress

With exam season here once again, anxiety among young people is at an all-time high. So, how can Cognitive Hypnotherapy help? By kate Kirrane from Seed Wellness

When I was 20 years old, I was struggling with acute anxiety and panic attacks. A friend recommended a hypnotherapist he had been seeing with great results so I decided to give it a go.

I still vividly remember sitting on the therapist’s couch, trying to articulate what I was going through and her calm response validating that what I was feeling was completely understandable. She helped me understand that the inner critic telling me ‘you’re not good enough’, ‘you are going to fail’ was something I could take control of, with the right help, so it could not fuel my anxiety any further.

This was my first experience of understanding the power of the subconscious mind and how we can actually choose the rhetoric going on inside our own minds. She also taught me invaluable calming techniques that I still use today. After just 3 sessions, the panic attacks stopped, my anxiety eased and I never needed to go back.

Said Alison Scott, Cognitive Hypnotherapist near Marlow, “Preparing for exams is not just about how much cramming of information we can manage – it’s also about our state of mind. Finding ways to relax allows the entire nervous system to calm down, helping to alleviate anxiety. Selfhypnosis techniques can be taught and used when needed, even during an exam.”

And Camilla Ross, Cognitive Hypnotherapist in Beaconsfield said, “Revision and exam preparation can seem like a huge task; sleep is often disrupted yet it is key to helping them process information and feel rested and restored. Using different techniques such as anchoring and visualisation go a long way in helping students feel calm and in control.”

Top 5 Hypnotherapy Techniques For Every Toolkit: Breathwork – Specific breathing techniques helps students manage their racing heart or other sensations of panic they may feel around or during an exam.

Visualisation – Using this vital tool, students can rehearse the exam and imagine how calm they will feel and how focused they can remain.

Anchoring – This technique involves a physical action such as squeezing two fingers together in association with a positive emotion, inducing an immediate sense of calm.

Power Of Suggestion – Specifically created recordings help tap into exactly what their sub-conscious mind needs to hear .

Cognitive Reframing - In gentle trance, negative thoughts about exams and learning can be reframed and replaced with more empowering ones. Building inner self-belief at this deep level can be life-changing as it affects all areas of life.

THE ART OF DOWNSIZING

We all appreciate that quality surpasses quantity in life, which is why downsizing should be seen as an exciting opportunity to fine-tune your environment rather than a mere reduction of space. Smaller spaces are often a highly practical solution, but also a reflection of the choice to embrace a lifestyle defined by intention, purpose and refinement. Only that which is important remains. Which calls for clever curation.

For those seeking to simplify their homes – and lives – without sacrificing beauty or comfort, it’s about balance. Should it stay or should it go? To downsize with style, each element of the space needs to be carefully edited to tick the boxes of functionality, aesthetics, and self-expression.

To reduce one’s home with panache entails careful planning, thoughtful curation, and a keen eye for design (plus an open mind). Join us on

the voyage as we explore how to navigate the transition to a scaled-down home with grace, sophistication and – yes, really – joy.

EDIT, EDIT, EDIT:

Approach downsizing as a careful process of conscious curation, as opposed to a quick or thoughtless discarding of possessions. Each item to be carried forward should be useful or sentimental (a bonus point for both). It helps to visualise your stylish, functional home and view existing pieces alongside this new space. The rarely used? The long forgotten? The I-never-liked-this? Let them all go, and free yourself as well as your floor space. Stay mindful and remember the end goal – peace, practicality, beauty and refinement.

EXCELLENCE OVER EXCESS:

Repeat: quality not quantity, quality not quantity, quality not quantity. Let this be your modern

downsizing mantra, a starting point and a guide when you reach a fork in the road. Exquisitely designed pieces of furniture are what it’s all about here. Pieces that are timeless, forever-lasting, and well-crafted. Pieces with soul. Multifunctional furniture such as extendable dining tables, modular sofas and nesting tables offer versatility and efficiency, allowing the space to seamlessly adapt to various requirements as and when needs arise, without compromising on daily good looks.

START WITH THE STORAGE:

Well-designed storage is the foundation of any home, none more so than the downsized. As spaces compact, the war against clutter can be never ending, which is why built-in solutions, shelving units and other such organisers are vital. There will be some belongings you want to conceal, and some you want proudly on display, and this is where perfectly planned storage steps in.

MINIMALIST MOMENTS:

Throughout the process you’ll probably find that you start naturally swaying towards minimalism. That doesn’t mean moving into an all-white, empty cube, but more the dawning understanding that less really is more. Simple forms, clean lines, uncrowded spaces and a cohesive colour palette will nudge you to creating an environment that’s as serene as it is harmonious.

THOSE PERSONAL TOUCHES:

Amidst all of the editing and paring back, it’s essential to remember the significance of meaningful touches. Downsizing in no way means the sacrifice of individualism or authenticity. Infusing cherished pieces into your new space not only showcases your personality and life story, but the memories they evoke every time you stroll past can be a thing of pure joy. Smaller-item collections should be considered and curated rather than totally de-cluttered, they very much deserve to be on display, bringing their delightful charm and character to the forefront of your new home. chaplins.co.uk

And the winner is...

It is fair to say that awards season for the silver screen captures the media attention each Spring. The Oscars, Tony Awards and BAFTAs bring the stars on to the red carpet in their couture for a glamourous event and raucous afterparty scene.

Whilst these take place, shuffling along in the background we have a run of garden design and landscaping awards. Similar but with some notable differences!

Later this month (21st-25th May), the industry equivalent of the Oscars will take place, as Chelsea Flower

“This beautiful project in Amersham caught the eye of the judging panel. A well thought out space, which worked with the house and anchored it to the plot”

Show is in full swing. Garden designers will take the spotlight, as the landscapers turn the vision into reality with a Gold and/or ‘Best in show’ on the line. However, other ceremonies have already been and gone. Wins celebrated and wounds licked.

One such event is the APL Awards (Association of Professional Landscapers). The APL is a community of accredited landscapers, designers and gardeners who have undergone rigorous inspection, ensuring the delivery and development of industry ‘best practice’.

The APL Awards take applications from the UKwide membership and the judges go to work. The judges are industry experts and visit every project, assessing each one down to the devilish detail.

Shortlists are produced, tables are booked, and trains are boarded to hear the final results.

J&S Scapes were proud to be shortlisted across 7 categories, with projects highlighting our breadth and range of work. We left with three Golds, three Silver Merit and one Silver.

Thankfully, we made it onto the stage as category winners for the best garden priced £80-100k.

This beautiful project in Amersham caught the eye of the judging panel. A well thought out space, which worked with the house and anchored it to the plot. Finished to a high level, the landscaping covered a variety of materials and skills, illustrating a high degree of care of professionalism.

When having your garden transformed, using an accredited company is important. Why not make it an award winner.

In any property, the flooring is the foundation of the design and ties everything together – setting the tone for your home, so it’s essential to get it right.

Flooring Superstore’s Trend Expert, Alex Heslop, shares their expert advice on how to embrace spring and summer when it comes to upgrading your flooring.

REIMAGINED COLOUR PALETTES

“We’re seeing a move towards more subtle and sophisticated colours and our flooring is no exception. Pastels and muted tones are being reimagined to give our living spaces a contemporary feel, making them the perfect choice for those wanting to bring a touch of elegance to their homes this spring and summer.

colour. We’re seeing a movement towards earthy, organic colours and finishes and tiles are a great way to add some interest to your décor.”

EMBRACE THE ECLECTIC

“Opt for materials and furnishings that make you happy to quickly transform a space while ensuring it feels like home. Whether that be tiles that remind you of a holiday in Europe or a beachy hardwood that brings a coastal feel to your living space, it’s all about breaking the rules and letting your personality shine through your décor this spring and summer.”

CONTRASTING COLOURS

“Strong colour combinations which offer a stark light and shade colour contrast such as a deep black and a crisp white are growing in popularity. Flooring is the perfect way to incorporate this trend into your décor, with monochrome floors being a classic choice that will never go out of style.”

DESIGNING A SPA-LIKE BATHROOM AT HOME

Google searches for ‘spa bathrooms’ are up 100%, with many of us exploring how we can design a more serene and relaxing space in our own homes. Lisa Cooper, Head of Product at Thomas Sanderson, shares her design advice on how to turn a basic home bathroom into a spa like sanctuary...

UTILISE NATURAL LIGHT

One of the most important factors to consider when designing a relaxing bathroom is natural light. Spas are light and airy environments, and we can replicate that at home if we choose the right window dressings. Shutters have louvres which you can open and close depending on how much light you want to let into the room. They are a great window solution for a blend of light and privacy, plus the material can withstand the humidity of a warm space so they won’t warp, crack or fade in colour.

ADD PLENTY OF ACCESSORIES

Add a few indoor plants to your bathroom to give the room that exotic and fresh feel. Olive trees look striking in a range of bathroom styles, from modern contemporary to traditional Victorian, the plant provides visual interest into one of the most practical rooms in the home. A sunny, south facing spot by the bathroom window is the ideal place

“One

to let your olive tree grow! Scented candles and diffusers can also help you relax by turning your space into a tranquil spa like escape. Experiment with calming scents that you’d often find on a retreat, like lavender or jasmine, and fill the room with tranquility.

INVEST IN LUXURY TOWELS AND ROBES

Luxury towels are worth investing in as they are absorbent, fluffy and warm. To get that spa style, subtle patterns and natural earthy tones are best for a towel which will look great draped over the bathtub or hung up. To elevate your spa experience at home even further, treat yourself to a new pair of slippers that you can use to keep your feet toasty when you step out of the bath. thomas-sanderson.co.uk
