Technique, innovation & creativity Ranked high amongst top names for local hairdressing salons is Haringtons
W
ith 12 salons across the South of England and roots firmly in the local communities in which they are based, they are proud winners and finalists in a host of national awards recognising their styling, colouring skills, their inhouse training programme and their service to customers. As previous winners of the prestigious British Hairdressing Awards Artistic Team of the Year, their award winning Art Team travels the world as hairdressing educators and also pass on their technique, innovation and creativity to all Haringtons salons through in salon workshops. Haringtons recently celebrated their 30th birthday – and I spoke to David Lambert, one of the directors, to find out more about them, what really makes them tick, and so special. “We have come a long way from the original salon in Maidenhead” says David, “and with 230 staff across our 12 salons we are continuing to grow and develop, to ensure that as a company we are at the top of our game, with highly trained and experienced staff that we are proud to call our team” Sitting in the Beaconsfield salon with David, it’s really easy to understand and get a feel for the atmosphere and mind-set of everyone working there. From the moment you walk in the front door, the reception team (who incidentally are both hairdressing trained with Haringtons, opted for a career change and were found suitable positions within the team) the welcome is a warm and genuine one. The atmosphere is busy – there is laughter, clients are talking – conversation is 1 0 M AY 2 0 1 6
vibrant, in truth, it feels a good place to be. David explained to me how reaching the 30 year milestone gave them an opportunity as a business to look at things in a different light, it felt the time was right to review the Beaconsfield branch and give it a fresh image and a new energy. “Beaconsfield is one of the larger branches” says David, “however, it is important to us to ensure that the space is well used, and that we don’t create that one vast room goldfish bowl effect” That has certainly been achieved, and the space, whilst large, has a very comfortable and intimate feel to it. Starting in the light and airy reception area (with a vast array of home hair care products from L’Oreal, Kerastase and Redken ) the client is taken through to the ‘Spa’. David explains “with mood lighting and air massage reclining backwash chairs, the client will start their experience here, with a shampoo and any hair and scalp treatments before moving on
We aim to begin the wind-down feeling here, for our clients to relax and really start to enjoy the time they are spending with us
to the cutting or colouring area. We aim to begin the winddown feeling here, for our clients to relax and really start to enjoy the time they are spending with us”. Feedback has been good – and the area, surrounded with beautiful mother of pearl tiling, has a very calming feel to it. “The next step of the journey, be it colour, cutting, or both takes the client through to either the colouring section in a secluded area with natural daylight or the main salon” David explains. “even with the window looking out onto the street, the layout ensures that you still enjoy the privacy that you would like, and are not on display for all to see.” This is the area in which David works every Thursday – he is adamant that a crucial part to running a successful chain of hairdressers is his ability to keep in touch with the day to day life in the salon, to understand what the client (and the staff ) are experiencing on a day to day basis and to then make fundamental business decisions based on that knowledge. There are two further directors of the business, Robert and Elaine Smith – both of whom practise the same belief and work from the Maidenhead branch. We talked at length about the staff and the makeup of the teams within Haringtons. David, Robert and Elaine all understand and value the need for strong, continuous and exceptional levels of customer care and as such, employ Jackie, as Customer Services Manager to oversee – amongst other things – this area. No doubt this has been pivotal in their winning of awards in this field. Each salon has a Manager and the team in general tend to stay for a long time, perhaps with a change in role, or sabbatical to go travelling, or perhaps time away to raise a family. “Our team are important to us” says David “without them we would not have the business and we are proud to have them all as the face of Haringtons. It is crucial to us that we create the right environment for our staff to enjoy to work in, which then in turn creates the right environment for our customers to enjoy” Haringtons invest heavily in their training. With City & Guilds NVQ training in every branch, in-branch Education Managers and training centre facilities in their Marlow,
Reading and Southampton locations, everyone receives on-going support. David explains “it is crucial that anyone involved in the process of colouring hair fully understands the science behind it. With practical training given in salon, theory is covered in a class room environment and we are 100% confident that our colour technicians are at the top of their game at all times” Involved in their local communities they support many local charities and, in recognition to their 30th birthday in 2015, each salon chose their own local charity to raise money for. The business then matched that amount to double the amount received by each chosen charity. Beaconsfield chose to support the Genesis Research Trust which is supported by local, Fern Britton. If you’ve not yet had the experience of Haringtons, be it in the Beaconsfield newly refurbished branch, or one of the local branches such as Maidenhead, Henley-on-Thames, Marlow or Wendover then do take a moment to consider booking your next appointment with them – you will be assured of a top class service from an experienced and friendly team of people.

The Natural History Museum at Tring challenges you! Do you have what it takes to survive on Antarctica?
T
o get to Antarctica from Tring, you would have to travel almost 14,500 kilometres. With bone-chilling temperatures, Antarctica is the highest, driest, coldest, windiest and most remote place on Earth. It is a continent 57 times the size of the UK and every year hundreds of scientists brave harsh conditions to carry out crucial scientific research, but what’s it really like to live and work there? The Natural History Museum at Tring’s new family exhibition Antarctica: Sub-zero Science asks you to decide whether you could survive the hostile conditions faced by scientists living and working on this fragile continent. You will discover how studying Antarctic animals from the bottom of the coldest ocean to the highest frozen peaks can be tough and even disgusting work: could you handle sifting through seal poo or studying penguin vomit? Learn why this research is vital to helping us understand how climate change and human activity are affecting the planet. Paul Kitching, Head of the Natural History Museum at Tring said “Antarctica is a great experience for the whole family to explore the wildlife of this unique continent and get an insight into the lives of the men and women who work there to better understand life on our planet.”

Being
INDEPENDENT Independence is something that has been prized at Davenies for 75 years
O
ver the course of this time Davenies has offered a truly independent education and it is very evident that in this Diamond Jubilee year, independence continues to be at the heart of life at the school. This independence comes in many guises. The Davenies curriculum offers a wide range of subjects allied to an ambition to delve more deeply into them. This provides a broad, stimulating and challenging education. This freedom to extend the learning experience is of great value in an independent school. Fostering Independence The Davenies philosophy has resulted in a distinct Language of Learning encouraging the boys to be Courageous, Curious, Enthusiastic, Motivated, Reflective and to show Perseverance. These qualities help to develop independence and a positive approach to learning in the boys from the age of four. This, in turn, enhances self-esteem and leads to greater academic attainment. In this sense the boys’ growth in independence gives them the tools to get the most from the educational experience and, at Davenies, their individuality is valued. The boys are encouraged to think for themselves, to embrace challenge and to view mistakes as opportunities to improve. Developing independence The Davenies academic curriculum is supported by a commitment to high quality sport, music, drama and art, as well as a thriving extra-curricular programme of over 50 activities per term; increased confidence and more developed social skills follow on naturally from this. As importantly, determination, collaboration, ambition and passion are fostered through a range of cultural, creative and sporting experiences.
A distinct feature of their independence is the Davenies Award Scheme. This extended enrichment course for boys in Years 7 & 8 is unique to Davenies and provides the boys with a wide range of opportunities including becoming young entrepreneurs, undertaking community service, learning lifesaving skills and much more. Being independent Davenies boys are cheerfully optimistic, friendly and good natured. Their prep school years are crucial in establishing a lifelong love of learning and the bedrock of skills that enable them to move on to a variety of the country’s leading grammar and senior schools with the capacity to thrive. Their independence and their confidence to stand on their own two feet are qualities that will serve them very well indeed, a point recognised by the many Old Boys who have returned to Davenies during our Jubilee Year.

The Comedy of Errors
Chiltern Shakespeare Company After its successful staging of the rather edgy comedy ‘The Taming of the Shrew in 2015, Chiltern Shakespeare Company takes to the seaside for its next production: The Comedy of Errors.
D
irector Paula Chitty has chosen to set the play in the town of Budleigh Salterton in the Victorian era. Expect a colourful production with a song or two as well as beach huts, bathing machines, Punch and Judy and colourful dresses. For a comedy, the start of the play is unpromising. A father has lost his wife and one of his twin sons and a twin servant many years earlier and has been searching desperately for them. Threatened with death when he enters a city which is an enemy to his own, he tells his story to the Duke who is moved to grant him a 24 hour reprieve to try to raise the ransom necessary to save his life. Multiple mistaken identities then occur as a father seeks his son, a brother seeks his twin, the servants mistake their masters and masters confuse their wives. Naturally, the culmination of this suspense, adventure and romantic folly is the reuniting of the family and the prospect of marriages… ‘The Comedy of Errors will be staged on 8th-11th and 15th-18th June at 8pm, with matinees on both Saturdays at 2pm. The grounds will open 2 hours before each performance. Ticket prices range from £16.00 to £23.00, with concessions available for some performances.

CSC is an amateur company with a highly respected reputation in the Chilterns and Thames Valley areas and their annual production is a firm fixture in the Beaconsfield calendar. Whilst its principal aim is to bring Shakespeare to life for all age groups, CSC is also committed to supporting local charities. The 2016 nominated charity is Woodrow High House, a residential and day centre supporting young people to grow and learn through outdoor activities, which will receive surplus funds from the production. Performances have been staged for over 26 years at Hall Barn, Old Beaconsfield; a wonderful quintessentially English parkland setting leading down to a lake. Many audience members take full advantage of the beautiful surroundings by having a picnic in the park before the performance. For those not wishing to bring their own food, a licensed refreshment marquee is on site and picnics may be pre-ordered. The actors perform in the open air on a grass stage against the backdrop of a 300 year old sculpted yew hedge. The audience sits on raked seating in a tented auditorium and so is protected from the elements. There is also limited wheelchair/disabled access. Full theatrical lighting and sound amplification are employed (including hearing loops). The ample parking is organised by the Beaconsfield and High Wycombe branches of The Lions who ask for voluntary contributions which all go directly to CSC’s chosen charity. It was an opportunity for the children (and adults) to experience a totally different culture, see and do things they had never encountered before but most importantly meet some totally inspirational people. Speaking about the visit Gabrielle said “ It really was a life changing experience and something I will never forget. It makes you realise how children are all the same wherever they come from, just some have more opportunity than others. I am really excited to be able to put on this event along with Bill Blenkarn of MJB Events as all the profits raised will go directly to AfriKids and specifically the funding of a Child Rights Centre in a remote area of Ghana where there is a particularly high level of children living with disabilities. Our aim is to raise £10,000 which will fund the centre for a year and hopefully give those children the opportunity they deserve.” THE DETAILS Tickets are selling fast and can be purchased at www.billetto.co.uk/back-to-summer-party. ART MAKING IS Healing & Uplifting! As part of Creativity for Health and Wellbeing week, local Art therapists will be hosting an event for people who would like to know more about and experience the benefits of how the creative process can enhance health and wellbeing.
T
As well as for those looking to enhance their own self-care, this day will also be an invaluable one for people working or caring for others and who would like to learn more about a resource they could have at hand. The day therefore may include Learning and Teaching Assistants in schools, afterschool and holiday club leaders, care home staff, carers looking after family members at home as well as professionals working in mental health. The event will be held at the beautiful College Lake nature Reserve near Tring on Sunday 19th June. There will be a range of calming, healing and uplifting activities throughout the day where no art skills are necessary, just a willingness to engage with the materials. In recent years, a growing body of evidence has been compiled from clinical research showing that participation in the arts and access to a range of arts opportunities can dramatically improve health outcomes and increase wellbeing. Supplementing medicine and care, art-making and other creative art forms such as music, drama and dance have proved to improve the health of people who may have mild

depression or anxiety along with other emotional challenges including bereavement or even early stage dementia. It also benefits those people who experience some physical difficulties. Taking part in arts activities can reduce stress and increase social engagement, raise self-esteem and confidence as well as provide opportunities for self-expression. This all promotes prevention of disease and helps to build wellbeing. Creativity and Wellbeing Plus is a new initiative jointly developed by London Arts in Health Forum and the National Alliance for Arts, Health and Wellbeing where partners from all across the country will be running diverse events in a collective push to demonstrate how the arts can positively benefit health and wellbeing for everyone. 2016 will be the fifth year running for Creativity and Wellbeing Week. Last year, over 25,000 people attended more than 150 events across London and the rest of the UK. Creativity and Wellbeing Week runs from 13 June 2016. Going that extra mile Hospice’s hero notches up hat-trick at London Marathon
Everyone here is so proud of Matt and what he’s doing on behalf of our patients. 78 miles in a little over ten hours in a fortnight on behalf of the charity - wow!
C
harity hero Matt Fowler raced over the London Marathon finishing line on Sunday April 24 to complete an epic longdistance running hat-trick for South Bucks Hospice. The London event was 47-yearold Matt’s third marathon in three consecutive weeks as he set about raising funds for patients with life-limiting illnesses. He finished the final race in the impressive time of three hours 34 minutes and 16 seconds – just five seconds slower than his time in Brighton a week earlier. And two weeks previously, he recorded a personal best time at Manchester of three hours 16 minutes and 13 seconds. All in all, he competitively raced more than 78 miles in a little over ten hours in the space of a fortnight on behalf of the charity. “I was really pleased with my London Marathon time - especially as after eight miles my legs were really tired,” said the father-of-two who lives in High Wycombe. “I was delighted I still managed to hold on for same time as Brighton, and pleased that I have kept my promise to run three in three weekends for the hospice. “I hope I can the public will now back me in donating to

my JustGiving internet page because the charity is building a new community hospice right now in Totteridge and needs every penny it can get to help give the best possible care to patients.” Matt, a successful commercial photographer, only took up running three years ago while walking his dog along the Thames at Marlow. Jo Woolf, Chief Executive at South Bucks Hospice, said: “Everyone here is so proud of Matt and what he’s doing on behalf of our patients. 78 miles in a little over ten hours in a fortnight on behalf of the charity - wow! What a fantastic donation of precious time and energy. It would be wonderful if 500 people now logged into Matt’s JustGiving page and donated a pound.” To sponsor Matt and support Hospice patients, go to: http:// campaign.justgiving.com/ charity/southbuckshospice/ThreeMarathons-in-a-Flash-Matt-FowlerSouth-Bucks-Hospice.

Tattenham Straight and settle down to a sumptuous spread and drinks with The Great British Picnic Epsom Downs racecourse has hosted Her Majesty The Queen at The Derby for nearly 70 years and this year will be particularly momentous as she celebrates her 90th birthday. As an avid racehorse owner for the past seven decades, the Queen has enjoyed watching many horses run on the historic Epsom Downs in her colours. The closest Her Majesty has got to winning the Greatest Flat Race in World race was with her horse Aureole finishing second in the 1953 Derby, just four days after her coronation. It’s an action-packed two-day event offering excitement and entertainment within the stunning setting of Epsom Downs, all just 30 minutes from London by train. If the Investec Derby isn’t for you there is plenty of other top class racing in the area this summer. Sandown Park racecourse, in Esher, hosts the Group 1 Coral Eclipse on Saturday 2 July. Get your outfit sorted for their Ladies Day on 1 July for a chance to win shoes and accessories from Unisa, a hat selected personally with British milliner Noel Stewart and a personal shopping appointment with one of the stylists from Beulah, all judged by Made in Chelsea’s Rosie Fortescue.

The Home of British Television...
Can now become yours The historic former headquarters of the BBC have opened to the public for the first time as the initial phase of 950 homes goes on sale.
W
est London's most famous forecourt, familiar to TV audiences worldwide, will become the centrepiece of a new 14-acre neighbourhood of apartments set among the Fifties architecture. Television Centre will also be home to vast modern office spaces, restaurants, shops and a cinema. Soho House will be unveiling a new hotel and private members club with a rooftop swimming pool, alongside a 25,000sq ft Cowshed spa and gym. The scheme, designed by Paul Monaghan of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, retains many of the building's Grade II-listed features as part of the design.
The first 432 homes of “Helios” apartments are being created within the distinctive circular-shaped block wrapped around the central courtyard and its familiar statue of Helios, the Greek sun god, which symbolises the radiation of television around the world. A new outer crescent of homes will mirror the inner ring, separated from it by gardens, while the original “stage door” entrance to Television Centre will be a 24-hour concierge lobby. The new apartments are just the beginning of the transformation of a 145-acre site. More than £8 billion of investment is bringing over 5,000 homes, a new Imperial College campus, an expanded Westfield shopping mall and the largest-ever John Lewis department store. Studio apartments are priced from £550,000, while one-bedroom apartments start at £650,000. Larger homes are priced from £1 million, rising to £7 million for one of the penthouse flats at the top of the Helios block, overlooking the entire forecourt. BMW LSO Open Air Classics 2016 The London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, will perform an all-Tchaikovsky programme in London’s Trafalgar Square on Sunday 22 May, the fifth concert in the Orchestra’s annual BMW LSO Open Air Classics series, free and open to all.

chaikovsky’s spectacular 1812 Overture and Symphony No 4 are performed as well as an arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake suite for which 42 young musicians from East London from the LSO’s On Track programme, and 23 musicians from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama play side-by-side with members of the LSO. The concert is presented by Paul Rissmann. The concert is a unique and now hotlyanticipated fixture in London’s musical calendar which each year has seen a capacity crowd of thousands of Londoners and visitors experience the LSO in the heart of London completely free and open to all. BMW shares the LSO’s belief that the greatest music should

be enjoyed by the greatest number of people, and partners similar highly-successful outdoor Opera for All events in Munich and Berlin, as well as numerous other artistic projects. LSO On Track is a year-round community programme delivered in partnership with the LSO’s music education hub partners in the former Olympic Host and Gateway boroughs in East London. LSO On Track challenges and inspires young musicians regardless of experience or background, working closely with teachers and families to ensure the young musicians receive the support, mentoring and opportunities they need to fulfil their potential. Throughout the year a number of inspiring projects and opportunities are incorporated into the On Track experience, and the BMW LSO Open Air Classics concert in Trafalgar Square sees the young musicians perform before an audience of thousands. In 2012 the participation in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics with the full London Symphony Orchestra was a very visible manifestation of the work of LSO On Track, witnessed by a huge international audience and highlighting in a unique way the work the LSO does in East London. The performance will begin at 6.30pm, though much earlier arrival is essential to secure entry. Full event information at www.lso. co.uk/openair Kathryn McDowell CBE DL, Managing
Director of the LSO, said: We are delighted to return to Trafalgar Square for our fifth, free concert, the result of our unique partnership with BMW. This year’s event promises to be truly spectacular with an all-Tchaikovsky programme featuring his 1812 Overture and 4th Symphony. BMW LSO Open Air Classics is a real highlight in the Orchestra’s calendar, for the players, the large audience of Londoners and visitors, and also for the young musicians from our On Track programme in East London who I’m pleased will return this year, performing music from Swan Lake side-by-side with Members of the Orchestra. The LSO is grateful to BMW for their continued commitment to this event, and to the Mayor of London for his support.” Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, said: The LSO concerts in Trafalgar Square have been delighting Londoners and tourists alike for five years with a wonderful selection of music that packs in the crowds. As a free event in the heart of the capital it is opening up classical music to a wider audience. It’s fantastic that young musicians have the opportunity to play alongside professionals with the esteemed Gergiev at the helm. I have no doubt that this year’s event will be extremely popular.” THE DETAILS Full event information at www.lso.co.uk/openair

Are you a Crow or a Jester? 2016 sees the return of Couture Designer Simon Horsley and Crow and Jester
C
row and Jester is the epitome of Men’s Couture Tailoring. Each suit is a masterpiece of individually designed tailoring personally created for you by designer Simon Horsley. Each garment is personalised to your style, using only the finest fabrics, and have the artistry of a designer who has worked at the
height of men’s tailoring for over 20 years. Having worked on patterns, productions and samples for the likes of Sir Paul Smith, Nigel Cabourn and Ozwald Boateng, including creating an entire season’s sample collection for them, Simon Horsley is unique in the fashion world as he not only individually designs each suit, he tailors it too, something never before seen in the world of couture tailoring. The word ‘Couture’ is not often associated with Men’s suits. However with Crow and Jester, Simon Horsley offers a truly one-of-a kind tailoring experience which is beyond the realms of both Made to Measure and Bespoke. 7 2 M AY 2 0 1 6
Crow and Jester represents both sides of Simon Horsley’s character. His ethos is that to create something truly individual, the designer has to give something personal from his or her own life experiences. For Simon it is all about personality driven design which has flawless detail combined with his personal twists. ‘A ‘Crow’ character is more introvert, classic, in command. It’s all about silhouette and cut’, explains Horsley, ‘with subtle classy details. The customer knows he is wearing the best suit
but doesn’t need everyone to know this. The ‘Jester’ character is an extrovert. When he walks into a room he wants everyone to notice him.’ Originally established in 1997, with its range of readyto-wear shirts and suits, 2016 sees a change of direction for Crow and Jester as Simon brings his exquisite skills and passion into the world of Couture tailoring, allowing Simon to meet each client by appointment and personally create each individually designed piece of clothing inspired by his Crow and Jester ethos.

jewellery has been central to the story of the Vogue woman, throughout the last century, telling the narrative of dress every bit as much as fashion," commented Carol Woolton. Starting from a Cartier Headdress pictured in the December 1917 issue of Vogue by photographer Adolph de Meyer, the exhibition captures a century of style defined by the magazine and Cartier. The exhibition also features an image of Elizabeth Taylor with her 69.42-carat Cartier Taylor-Burton diamond, as well as a 1936 portrait of the Duchess of Windsor wearing a bracelet with nine Latin gem-set crosses, and a 1902 tiara published in the December 2001 issue of Vogue, shot by Mario Testino.

Can the Kenalog Injection help relieve your hay fever symptoms? Dr Richard Angwin of DOCTORnow What is the Kenalog injection? Kenalog (the active component is triamcinolone acetonide) is a corticosteroid injection and is often used for joint injections to reduce inflammation in arthritis. How can the Kenalog injection help relieve my hay fever symptoms? Because corticosteroids have a powerful antiinflammatory action, they are effective at reducing inflammation triggered by allergies (such as hay fever). The symptoms of hay fever are caused by inflammation. Kenalog should not normally be given unless conventional treatments (antihistamines, nasal sprays, eye drops) have failed to control the symptoms. It can be especially useful to get people through important periods in their life, such as revising and taking examinations, looking for and interviewing for jobs, and training for sporting events (it does not enhance sporting ability!) What is the success rate? The injections are highly successful - almost 100% and the effect lasts about 6 weeks.
infection, glaucoma, and problems at the injection site. It is debatable whether short term steroid use can lead to early arthritis. Some people have calculated that if short term steroids do cause this, the rate is about 1:250,000 cases. Longer term use of steroids (usually > 6 months) can have more serious side effects such as diabetes and osteoporosis, which will be discussed in your initial consultation. What dose is required? There are 2 doses used for hay fever, 40 mg or 80 mgs, I normally go with the lower dose which usually controls the symptoms. This has the advantage that if a second dose is required it can be given prolonging the duration of effect up to 12 weeks. I would not normally recommend more than 80 mg of Kenalog per year for hay fever control.
Where is the injection site? The injection site is in the buttock.
Can I get the Kenalog injection on the NHS? Kenalog is not recommended in the NHS.
Are there any side effects? All corticosteroids can cause side effects, these are usually rare and minor in short term use but can include - stomach irritation, alterations in mood, increased susceptibility to infection, masking of
Can I have the Kenalog injection when pregnant or breastfeeding? I would not advise Kenalog in pregnancy or when breast feeding.

CrossEyes Amersham Looking after the eyes of Buckinghamshire
C
rossEyes Amersham is getting ready to celebrate their first birthday, and what a year it has been! The Danish Eyewear & Optometry concept has been received extremely well, and the Amersham team are all geared up for another year of providing excellent eye care and fashionable eyewear to the residents of Bucks. Owner and Optometrist Amit Mandla says: ‘ What an amazing first year at CrossEyes, Amersham. We’ve had a real rollercoaster ride and enjoyed every minute!!! As an experienced optometrist of 17 years, my team & I pride ourselves on spending time with all of our customers, both during the eye examination and frame selection’.
CrossEyes, the Danish eyewear & Optometry chain, are well known for their good quality frames, and this Autumn the production of the glasses was moved to Denmark which has improved the quality of the eyewear even further. Mr Mandla continues: ‘We are still constantly impressed with the quality of our frames and lenses and proud to say they are both Designed and Made in Denmark. Our customers continue to visit to see our exclusive frame designs, of which we have frequent new stock. They are impressed with our unique, affordable, clear pricing strategy - all our frames are the same price - that’s truly what CrossEyes is all about. As our first year draws to a close, I would like to thank our many customers for choosing us and we look forward to a bright and prosperous second year! ‘ Since the opening of CrossEyes Amersham on Hill Avenue, the street is buzzing with new businesses and has benefitted from many more stores including BooHoo Beauty and the Metro Bar with a new bistro planned to open right opposite. The Amersham store was the second CrossEyes store to open in the UK after CrossEyes Clerkenwell opened in January 2014. Since then, the popular eyewear chain has opened stores in Camden, Leeds, Belfast and – most recently - Marylebone in Central London, with many more stores in the pipeline for the next year. ack in April 2015, Hazlemere Window Company Ltd celebrated 30 years in business as independent double glazing manufacturers and installers. Another year on and this family owned and run business continues to invest in the latest most thermally efficient products, high tech machinery, expert staff and a long term stable future for all its customers and employees. During Spring 2016 Hazlemere Windows started a major refurbishment of their 8,000 square feet High Wycombe Showroom in Wellington Road, on Cressex Business Park, adjacent to their 38,000 square foot factory. The work is being done in several phases to ensure the Showroom stays open 7 days a week, and inconveniences customers as little as possible. They have already installed as part of this updating of products the latest slimmer
Yet another new product that is on demonstration display within the High Wycombe Showroom is a two section UPVC casement window with a “floating” mullion, enabling both sections to fully open to provide an extra wide opening like French doors, which is sometimes the only way smaller apertures in bedrooms can achieve fire egress that is legally required on replacement windows under the current Building Regulations. Hazlemere have ordered a solid roof conservatory which will be built in the High Wycombe Showroom during 2016, as the level of interest in this product has increased in recent years. Home owners need to be mindful that every solid roof conservatory or orangery falls under Building Regulations which should be obtained prior to commencing construction, as in many cases planning permission for solid roof conservatories is also required. More than 31 years on Hazlemere continues to invest in its future, showrooms (the other being in Welwyn Garden City) and vehicle fleet, which now numbers more than 20 vehicles, the very latest edition being a low emissions Luton delivery van. Hazlemere Window Company Ltd is fortunate to have had such loyal customers over the last 30+ years, but also been able to retain its skilled and experienced workforce, employing its own designers, surveyors, ground workers, fabricators, fitters and service engineers. The Hazlmere Sculptured double glazed aluminium window system is fabricated exclusively in Hazlemere’s factory and is a design that incorporates all the best features that Hazlemere have learnt about during the last 30 years. NOT THINKING TWICE ABOUT A HOME SWIMMING POOL
F
our years ago Matt and Kerrie Smith moved from London to a detached home in rural Buckinghamshire with their three children, tempted by the promise of a traditional family home in the county. After making the decision to transform their home with a pool house in the garden, Kerrie talks about her experience. WHAT MADE YOU FIRST DECIDE TO GET A HOME SWIMMING POOL? My son has a friend who has an indoor swimming pool and we just saw how much flexibility it gives the family. Both my husband and I like to keep active, so we felt it would tick all the boxes. It’s a place where adults can keep fit and children can have fun, while also being a space where we can go to relax and disappear from the house when we want to. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ORIGIN LEISURE? Andrew Ginger came out to meet with us and we immediately knew it was the right decision. Origin Leisure has 35 years’ experience and understood what we wanted. Most importantly, they were respectful of our budget from start to finish. ey managed the whole project from design and planning, through to building and maintenance. e whole project went just as they said it would, without us having to lift a finger. 82 M A Y 2 0 1 6
WHAT WERE THE MAIN CHALLENGES? Initially, the biggest challenge was deciding whether it was the right decision for our family. We have other parts of the house that could be refurbished, but if we had waited for a few years then the children may be too old to fully enjoy it. We wanted to give them the joys of having their own swimming pool while they were young. We had no need to worry about the building work. It started in July 2014 and was completed in November, 4 weeks quicker than expected. Origin Leisure were so polite and thoughtful, even taking care to move our children’s beloved Wendy House from one part of the garden to another to make room for the pool. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE THINKING ABOUT A HOME SWIMMING POOL? It’s honestly the best thing we’ve done. We knew we were going to enjoy it, but we absolutely love it. My advice is not to think twice. I smile every time I look at the pool and it’s brought so much fun to our home. n

HOUSE & GARDEN
See the light in 2016 BY GABRIELLE FAGAN
Lighting can transform rooms creating different atmospheres and even, by visual trickery, changing the dimensions of a space. Once you’ve learnt to play with the options, there’s no limit to the effects you can enjoy, but with such a huge array of lighting on offer, the right choice for your home may not always be glaringly obvious. Here we reveal illuminating advice on ‘seeing the light’, and the top trends for 2016... BIG & BOLD Lighting design is about to change dramatically. Rather than being the carrier of one or several large light bulbs, light fittings will become the source of light in their own right. Organic shapes and new materials will combine with the myriad, hugely effective, LED light sources, to create stunning and dramatic lighting, while standard, domestic lighting will become more elegant, compact and efficient. Almost daily, exciting and innovative lights are being launched, which showcase design talent, new materials and technology. Interestingly though, one of the strongest trends for the past few years has been anything but high-tech; retro industrial lighting is still hugely in demand. Sun metal pendants, workshop adjustable wall lights and factory floor and table lamps are very on trend, and look particularly effective teamed with traditional style filament light bulbs. LIGHTBULB MOMENT Decorative light bulbs, glass shades and cluster pendants are stars of this 8 4 M AY 2 0 1 6
year’s light range. Decorative bulbs - with LED, filaments or appealing shapes - are really making an impact as they are an easy, inexpensive but extremely appealing way to freshen up a space. Cluster pendants are a striking alternative to a large statement pendant shade, and work well in smaller spaces. To feature lighting - oversized floor lamps through to decorative wall lights - as a form of functional art, which make a statement in any room. MAJOR IN METAL Metallics, especially copper’s warm tones, combine with light to give a warm glow, and will take centre stage in this year’s collections. Metallics are expected to gain momentum in 2016, and that’s evident in lighting ranges. Bronze, brass, copper and chrome all provide a hint of vintage luxury, while their highly reflective surfaces dance a warm, sparkling glow around the room. Metallic accents are great because they can be adapted to suit all tastes, from clusters of distressed copper pendant lights for industrial style spaces, to glamorous mercury silver table lamps catering to the luxurious statement home. COLOUR & CALM More use of colour, and coordinating the style of a room’s lights, are two strong features - people are much more ready to experiment with lighting these days and there’s a huge choice available with chandeliers no longer confined to living rooms; they’re being used to add an instant glamour factor in kitchens, bedrooms and studies. Wall lights work wonderfully to draw attention to focal points - for instance, a pair of lights flanking a console table or work of art. Increasingly, people are co-ordinating table and floor lamps and pendants, a sure sign that they are taking more care over lighting, which ideally should be planned before redecoration. It’s all about using your imagination and indulging your own taste.

Stylish interiors
...that are here to stay BY GABRIELLE FAGAN
Decoristas get as much pleasure from beautifully designed interiors as fashionistas get from clothes, but even the most devoted don’t want to be such dedicated followers of trends that it means redecorating every season.
T
hankfully, a little insider knowledge goes a long way and savvy home bunnies know the styles that won’t have a short shelf-life, because their good looks and design credentials will ensure enduring appeal. Plus, some looks are versatile enough to allow for fresh interpretations, which can easily breathe new life into them. Reprise last year’s favourites that are set to make their mark again in 2016. GLADLY GREY Those of us reduced to a ‘rabbit-in-the-headlights’ standstill when confronted by colour charts hailed the passion for grey as a blessed relief. This is surely a ‘Mr Right’ palette - easy-on-the eye, versatile, and grey can be mean and moody or feminine and delicate, depending on the shade you choose. It’s also the perfect foil for a multitude of other colours, so I predict this colour is ‘a keeper’, and our love affair with grey will continue for a long time to come. BRING ON BLING It’s confession time... I’m an interiors magpie and can’t resist something shiny and glittery, so I was utterly delighted by the copper craze, and in 2016 will be following the metal trail to gold. There should be a ‘handle with care’
8 8 M AY 2 0 1 6
label on metallics however, as overdosing on them can all too easily tip a setting into tacky territory, but with a careful ‘less is more’ approach, they’re guaranteed to inject glamour and interest. Go full-on with metallic-finish tiles, a high-end choice for kitchens and bathrooms, or simply confine burnished metal to glittering accessories. MONOCHROME MAGIC Classic, timeless black and white never goes out of fashion, and just as a wardrobe should have at least one little black dress, in my book, every home can benefit from one room decorated in monochrome. It’s a style that’s surprised even the interiors experts with its enduring popularity over the last few years - but not its fans, already well aware of how versatile it is. For life on the really dark side, you can opt for drama - a black feature wall or ceiling - or my choice; white walls and black paintwork, complemented by black framed photographic prints. Leave it minimal or dress it up with simple ‘home jewellery’, like colourful cushions and lamps. Frankly, what’s not to like? RUNNING WILD My votes for last year’s fun, achievable looks went to ‘country lodge’ think hunting, shooting, fishing, with wood panelling and stag heads - and its wilder cousin, frontier decor, evoking the Wild West in prairie chic, fur throws, buffalo heads and tribal prints. Nature will still rule in 2016 but looking forward, my advice is: step away from the squirrels and cute creatures! A more formal botanical look’s coming through, which is less cosy and more sophisticated, and those deer heads should be funky and colourful and a little less like true hunting trophies. Alternatively, embrace a luxury lodge look; natural materials from stone to wood and layered faux furs - more grand mountain retreat than cowboy shack.

O
ver the years we have built up a strong heritage that has grown with our continued passion for design, quality furniture, dedication to detail and customer service. We understand the value of working closely with our clients, many of whom have become our friends over the years. We are able to offer a truly bespoke service with the ability to design and fit furniture in any room within your home. Every thing we do is considered and made to order. Today’s kitchens are more complex, they are larger, often open plan spaces to cook, eat, entertain, gather as a family and relax. This means that the average kitchen project has become much more than a simple “Out with the old and in with the new”. To create your open plan kitchen and dining scheme can be a daunting prospect, especially if it is to include an extension with building works, plumbing and electrics.
We have become a less formal society with a willingness to share, dine and relax. Cooking for friends within an open plan space is seen as more social. The big appeal of an open plan kitchen is for the cook to be involved on a day-to-day basis, be it entertaining or simply for the whole family to be together. As we all lead busier and more time pressured lives it can be a real benefit to offer help with homework or keep half an eye on smaller children whilst preparing the evening meal. We have become a less formal society with a willingness to share, dine and relax. Cooking for friends within an open plan space is seen as more social. It’s the summer time when an open plan space really adds
benefit, the majority of kitchen extensions will include a large amount of glass giving light. Doors give easy access to the garden which vastly extends the living and entertaining space. As with any kitchen project, large or small it’s good to take your time to research and understand what is most important for you in your design. St Giles Furniture will support you every step of the way. With our service, expertise in design and stunning furniture your perfect kitchen is our business.

Splash out on a garden pond You can dig a miniature pond in just an afternoon. It may hold only a few gallons of water, but will still make a pretty feature. A slightly larger one - 1m x 2m gives more scope, but a 2m x 4m pool has massive potential for plants, wildlife and beauty.
F
or small ponds, rigid liners are a good option. You'll want the mould to be virtually invisible beneath the water so choose a dark green or black model. Tiny moulds can cost as little as ÂŁ20, but expect to pay ÂŁ600 for a 2.6m x 1.8m x 0.6m pond. Prices vary, so visit an aquatic centre or look online before buying. Flexible liners - PVC or layered polythene - are an alternative, especially if you want to create an unusual shape. They must be laid in a faultlessly prepared hole that has been interlined with old carpet or pond underlay. GET THE SITE RIGHT If you know what you're doing, pond building is fairly easy. Otherwise, call the professionals. Remember that the pond
9 4 M AY 2 0 1 6
sides must be level so that the water comes right to the top, leaving no unsightly liner on display. Site your pond in sun or partial shade away from trees, and have paving, turf or soil running right Picture: up to the edges for an attractive margin. The pond should be at least 0.5m deep for aquatic plants, but needs to be shallow at the edges for marginal species.Use planting baskets filled with aquatic compost or soil topped with gravel. Wildlife needs to have access, so install a ramp of some kind or build up part of the marginal shelf with bricks or stones. Planting is the best bit. You'll need floating leaves for summer shade so include water lilies and aim for 60 per cent surface cover. For tiny ponds, choose Pygmaea range or other non-
vigorous types Oxygenating plants are essential, so include native starwort, curled pondweed or water crowfoot. These help to keep water cleaSr and give homes to invertebrates. Beautiful marginals include Japanese water irises, Bowles golden sedge, kingcups, water forget-me-nots and cotton grass. Choose carefully and match plants to the pond's size. Thugs such as great spearwort, pickerel weed and yellow flag are suitable only for big ponds. If you want fish, fine. But for more diverse fauna, limit your choice to sticklebacks. That will give tadpoles, dragonflies, newts and other creatures a chance.
