“The past never really disappears” K
ate Morton’s international bestseller The Lake House is a compelling tale of a missing child and the discovery of buried secrets from long ago. Here she talks about the key to a great mystery novel, her fascination with family secrets, and finding the time to write.
16 JUNE 2016
stumbles across a large, abandoned home in the depths of Cornwall, and an ageing crime author writing and solving mysteries – apart from those in her own life. Soon Sparrow becomes consumed with a story of love and tragedy from a time long ago. As we’re transported through the decades, pieces of the puzzle begin to surface allowing the reader to play detective. Kate has always had a love of the mystery genre: “I adored Enid Blyton as a child and read all the Famous Five and Secret Seven novels; I wanted nothing more than to belong to a sleuthing club with a secret clubhouse knock and a special badge! As

“
Kate Morton must be doing something right. To date, she’s sold over 10 million copies of her novels, which have been translated into 33 languages, across 38 countries. How does that feel? “Those sorts of numbers are difficult to compute but it’s wonderful to think that so many people have read my books”, including, of course, her international bestseller The Lake House, a heart-pounding, mystery page-turner, woven together with a story of love, loss and a haunting past. Kate says the book was born from three main ideas: “I’d long wanted to write about a missing child; I heard the intriguing tale of an abounded house, and I was determined to write a book that could properly be termed a ‘mystery’. Once those three things came together, the story really began to come to life.” Kate’s fifth novel tells the story of a small child who goes missing from a beautiful home in Cornwall on Midsummer’s Eve in 1933. Fast forward seventy years and troubled Metropolitan Police detective Sadie Sparrow
an adult I have an enormous admiration for the grande dames of the crime-writing world and was determined that my character Alice Edevane – whom we first meet as a romantic sixteen-year-old, and then again at eighty six when she’s a very successful, very unsentimental crime writer – should be the sort of woman who could take her place beside PD James, Ruth Rendell and Agatha Christie.” And indeed, The Lake House has all the ingredients of a classic mystery tale: a jaded detective, a crumbling house being rapidly
consumed by nature, and – Kate’s favourite – family secrets: “Families fascinate me: the secrets, the complex relationships and shifting loyalties. We all inherit objects, stories, and even character traits, from those who came before us.” The structure of the novel and the swapping and switching of time and place also lends itself to this theme: “I’m so intrigued by the intermingling of the present and past,” Kate says.“And the way we can occasionally sense both at once. One of the prevailing themes in my novels is the idea that the past never really disappears; that secrets might be behind us but there’s always the possibility that they will return to haunt the present.” All of Kate’s novels have an element of mystery. What’s the magic ingredient? The secret to a great mystery, she says, “is to create believable characters and a world that readers want to live inside”. Finding the time to write one, however, isn’t always so easy: “As a mother of three sons I have to be pretty flexible. I love the idea of a quiet room of one’s own, but the reality can be somewhat different, so I’ve learned to write anywhere and anytime. Once I heard another novelist say that being a writer meant having homework for the rest of your life. It’s true.”
The Lake House by Kate Morton is out now in paperback.

‘Chamber of Secrets’ brings Cliveden’s ghosts to life
As the glamorous Cliveden Estate in Buckinghamshire celebrates its 350th anniversary, an historic chamber located below the South Terrace is opening for the first time in 30 years, inviting visitors to help the National Trust solve the mystery of its past.
F
rom the notorious 2nd Duke of Buckingham who built the first house [1] for his mistress before fatally wounding her husband, to the focus of the Profumo affair in the 1960s [2], Cliveden has long been a place of scandal and intrigue. In 2012, the National Trust began a five year, £6 million restoration project on the Grade 1 listed [3] South Terrace to ensure its future. During this time, the conservation charity removed damaged and peeling rendering from the walls of the chamber. Now, contemporary sound artist Robin Rimbaud, alias Scanner, has been commissioned to create a musical installation that will encourage visitors to reflect on
[1] There have been two fires at Cliveden since the estate was acquired in 1666 by George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and the house which was built some 9 or 10 years later. The house seen today was designed by Charles Barry in 1851 for the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland after the second fire at Cliveden destroyed the majority of the house above. [2] Over the weekend of the 8 and 9 July 1961, the third Viscount Astor, William (known as Bill), hosted a house party, which included the Secretary of State for War, John Profumo, and his wife. Cliveden’s resident society osteopath Stephen Ward was also hosting a house party at his home within the estate. Ward’s guests included society showgirl Christine Keeler and Yevgeny Ivanov, a Soviet naval attaché. Ward took his friends up to the house for a dip in the swimming pool where they were discovered by Bill Astor and his guests. This chance meeting between Keeler and Profumo and the three-month affair that followed was to end Profumo’s career and bring down the Macmillan Conservative government. More information on the story can be found here: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cliveden/features/scandal-at-cliveden [3] Grade I listed buildings are of exceptional interest and only 2.5% of listed buildings are Grade I. Cliveden’s stories and the unique chamber, which continues to baffle National Trust experts. Scanner said of his piece titled Ghosts: “I wanted to create a work that draws people in, using music and sounds to paint an image of how Cliveden might have sounded over the last 350 years. “Music clearly played a key part in the sonic makeup of the building so I created a hypnotic background loop based on a piece of music by Vivaldi. This acts like a glue, holding the piece together, whilst elsewhere you hear elements of opera, Music Hall and even the audience awaiting a concert, chatting away, as the orchestra tunes up. I want people to feel as if at any moment a performance is about to start but is never quite revealed. I want them to see with their ears. “Ghosts is an ode to history, and to an astonishing building. It attempts to capture the grandeur, scale and character of the architecture in a captivating and moving manner.” Before the chamber is re-rendered, visitors will be given a unique opportunity to see it in its rawest state and explore their own theories about how the room was originally intended to be used. Visitors to Cliveden will be able to hear Scanner’s recordings and visit the sounding chamber from 20 May until restoration work begins on the section of terrace above the sounding chamber in September. Thanking a community June 23 promises to be a truly momentous day in Beaconsfield this year and a day some of you may never forget.
H
owever, for those about to turn the page believing we are talking about the European Referendum, please think again. For June 23 is the day that the South Bucks Hospice ‘roadshow’ comes to town. The charity, which provides vital services and care for patients with life-limiting illnesses, is in Beaconsfield from 10am to 4.30pm to show just what it offers - as well as an update on construction of its new multi-million pound community hospice. Nurses, counsellors and psychotherapists will be on standby to talk to the public about subjects including palliative care, mental health and emotional well-being. The free sessions - courtesy of South Bucks Hospice - will be in confidence and give people the chance to meet experts on a one-to-one basis and ask crucial questions, such as how to cope with life-threatening illnesses. There will also be minicomplementary therapy sessions. Jo Woolf, Chief Executive of South Bucks Hospice, explained: “Death and serious illness are intensely-difficult subjects to think about, let alone discuss, and yet we all have to face up to them at some point. “Our wonderful staff are well-versed in dealing with these deeply-personal issues and helping people to find some kind of path through their crisis, even if it seems impossible at first.” She added: “Our aim on June 23 is simply to be there to support anyone who needs us, raising awareness of the services we offer. You could be a
Charity chief Jo Woolf felt a little hoarse after an afternoon thanking fundraisers for donating £2,000 to her hospice. Jo, Chief Executive of South Bucks Hospice, was in the middle of expressing her gratitude and accepting a large cheque when she found herself being nuzzled on the shoulder at the Horse Trust in Speen. patient, a carer or a relative who wants someone to chat to as a starting point. If so, we’d be delighted to help. “This is a day when we want to give something back to the community of Beaconsfield who have supported us so well in the past.” The hospice has a popular shop at 7-8 The Parade, Maxwell Road in the town which helps fund patient care. The charity also treats many patients from Beaconsfield at its day hospice in Wycombe. Construction on the new £4.8m hospice began earlier this year and the new state-of-the-art centre will be open in 2017. The 15,000 square foot new building in Totteridge will put all of the charity’s services under one roof and allow it room to expand. Jo Woolf said: “It must also be noted that hospices are not all about end-of-life care. We also allow seriously-ill people to rebuild their lives and come to terms to life-changing conditions. “We are the only day hospice in a catchment area of 320,000 people in this area. All too often, patients and their families leave too much to chance, but our services are proven to help people plan ahead and come to terms with their illnesses. “Our thanks go to Universal Care for donating their venue to us allowing us to raise an awareness of the services we deliver to the Beaconsfield community.” THE DETAILS For those who want to meet the South Bucks Hospice team on June 23, the address is Chester House, 9 Windsor End, Beaconsfield, HP9 2JJ. year was the group’s Spring Lunch, where 60 guests dined on four home-cooked courses. “We were enormously grateful for the tireless work from this fantastic community group which has just nine members but which raises loads of money for hospices in the area,” said Jo. Around £80,000 has been raised in the last ten years for charity. “It was wonderful to be treated to such a fab lunch, be given the opportunity to thank everyone and collect the donation – and make hay while the sun shines so to speak – at the wonderful Horse Trust. This money will go towards helping our patients
with life-limiting illnesses.” Christine Symondson, Chairperson of Speen Helping Hospices, said: “We are delighted to contribute to the wonderful work of the hospice in South Bucks through the generosity of all who support us.” For more information on South Bucks Hospice and its progress in building new headquarters in High Wycombe: www.sbh.org.uk Speen Helping Hospices can be found at: www.facebook.com/speenhelpinghospices

De-stressing the holidays
Experts are increasingly pointing the finger at the trappings of modern life to explain the epidemic of stress affecting our children. Computers, mobiles – too much exposure can scramble the tender brains of children and create anxiety and depression. Even school holidays are to be dreaded as youngsters lose contact with school friends and turn to their devices to cope with the boredom of days that seem to stretch for ever.
A
t Super Camps, rediscovering the fun of childhood will always be a guiding mantra. The company hires schools and turns them into playhouses, encouraging children of all ages to make new friends and enjoy the wonder of discovery and exploration. Six action-packed daily activities that range from swimming to Quad biking to Archery are all included in the price, but so too is the freedom to choose. 26 JUNE2016
Prefer to get stuck into a clay-modelling session or go on a scavenger hunt – or relax on a beanbag with new chums and a good book? Or organise a 5 a-side football game, girls and boys together? That’s ok – and good for your child too. Allowing children to decide the tempo of the day’s activities is regarded by child development experts as essential to childhood fulfilment – and certainly adds to the fun at Super Camps. Word-games, mosaic-making, body-art – the opportunities for selfexpression - and hilarity - are endless, as are the opportunities to play classic British sports like tennis and cricket – or, for children aged 7 and over, enjoy bushcraft or cooking lessons. As leader in its field in the UK, Super Camps runs at venues across the country, putting different activities for children aged 4-14 each day, bookable daily or weekly. Energetic, friendly staff put children through their paces and ensure all ages and abilities bond together as they learn and explore with friends new and old. All they ask is that you pack a healthy lunch. Remember it’s all about de-stressing the holidays. Once your child has rediscovered fun at Super Camps, holiday stress will be a thing of the past. peaking with Jacqueline Ferguson, founder and owner, she tells us about reaching the second anniversary of her venture, and how the business has grown during that time. “I had a shop in Mayfair for some years and during that spell I made some important contacts with various movers and shakers” said Jacqueline. “When the Royal Court needed a safe pair of hands to cope with the responsibility of a once-in-a-lifetime Royal event, they knew they could rely on me. The rest, as they say, is history! Since then I have photographed many more members of the Royal Family however, I really would love to be asked to do something with Kate, Wills and their children!”
I asked her where she was taking the business after such a spectacular two years? “I want to apply my creativity to the wonderful families that live in and around Beaconsfield; the babies, children & pets and also local commercial interests. All of these areas would enjoy some of my creative attention because if I can cope with the responsibility of a Royal commission I am absolutely able to accommodate bouncing babies, boisterous hounds and reluctant teenagers!” 28 JUNE 2016
Jacqueline is clearly very proud of the reputation she has established within South Buckinghamshire. Feedback from a client who had previously used her services was very positive, explaining Jacqueline’s enormous care over detail on something as small as a passport photo, making sure that the expression, hairline, size of image and resolution will meet Passport Office standards first time, every time. At the other end of the scale, right through to the considerable responsibility of both boutique and major weddings, talking to her brides at great length to make sure she adopts their vision of things and knows exactly who is attending, the special people and the really special people! It is this attention to detail on assignments, both small and large that has contributed to the success of her business and created the fabulous reputation that she has locally in Buckinghamshire, and Beaconsfield in particular. After leaving Penn Road Studio I was left with the impression that Jacqueline really is taking this venture somewhere very special and we will keep a close eye on her to see if she achieves her Royal dream! ummer is now upon us with the anticipation of sunny days, as well as the joy of succulent new produce. The arrival of June carries high expectations for the abundance of early flavourful summer ingredients. It is the beginning of the English strawberry season, and strawberries are clearly summer’s stand-out sensation, not to forget the fragrant sweetness of raspberries and the clean sharp taste of goose berries, to follow. Cornish mackerel and crab are also unmissable in June, as well as the summer vegetables starting to come into their own spinach, red chard, fresh peas, broad beans, asparagus, young leeks and baby carrots are all for the taking. This delicious, vibrant green risotto marks the first taste of summer and is perfect for a light lunch or a starter for dinner.

T
his year Beaconsfield High School is celebrating 50 years since first opening its doors and the Head and Governors were keen to find a way to thank the whole community for their unending support. After a brainstorming session with parent helpers and a consultation with students, BeckyFest was born. BeckyFest is an ambitious outdoor music festival set to showcase some of the fantastic musical talent emerging from the local area. Topping the bill and fresh from a national arena tour supporting the legendary Wet, Wet, Wet, is ex-Davenies and Berkhamsted pupil, singer songwriter, Ben McKelvey. Ben has been likened to both Bruce Springsteen and Paul Weller and is tipped for stardom, so this is a great opportunity to delight his local fans before he hits the big time. Said Ben, ‘I’m really excited to play BeckyFest. It’s a local show for me and my band so it’s great to be playing a hometown show, especially after we’ve been on the road this year all around the country. We’ll be playing some new songs from my album that came out earlier this year too. A lot of the bands on the bill that night I’ve had the pleasure of playing with before, so will be good to see some old friends. Should be a great night!’ Also on the bill are Oli Coates, another up and coming local performer who released his debut EP in October last year, and electric rock band, The Running Guns, Salt, The Makarov Scheme and Steph Willis are also confirmed, with more to be announced shortly.

Concours of Elegance will gather the British cars that have defined the British motor industry in each decade of Her Majesty The Queen’s lifetime. From the glamorous Bentley 3 Litre of the ‘20s and Rolls-Royce Phantom of the ‘30s, to the ingenious Mini of the ‘60s and game-changing McLaren F1 of the ‘90s, it will be a true celebration of British innovation and engineering. The Concours of Elegance traditionally tells the story of the automobile from start to finish, and the very latest car in this year’s Main Concours is the one-of-eight Touring Supeleggera Disco Volante Spyder. the rare Alfa Romeo 8C Spider, the Disco Volante is hand-crafted from aluminium and carbon fibre. Sometimes the stories behind the cars are what makes them great, including the 1966 Mini Radford Mini de Ville GT in the Concours. Bought by Beatle, George Harrison, the car was painted with a psychedelic livery for the film Magical Mystery Tour. Also in the Main Concours is a 1986 Ferrari Testarossa Spider Valeo – the only factory-built convertible Testarossa in existence. It was especially built for Gianni Agnelli when he took over Fiat S.p.A in the ‘80s. A free-to-view section of the Concours of Elegance will see hundreds of cars from the likes of Ferrari, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Bentley and more line Windsor Castle’s stunning Long Walk. More than 800 cars will be attending over the weekend of Concours of Elegance 2016, from the UK’s leading car clubs. Owners’ clubs from AC, Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, Ferrari
and Lamborghini will join a host of others in showcasing their cars as part of a free-to-view area of the Concours on Windsor Castle’s incredible Long Walk. One of the most incredible sights coming to Windsor Castle in September, is a parade of every single Aston Martin ever produced. Organised with the help of the Aston Martin Owners’ Club, the parade will be arriving in to Windsor Castle at 9am on Saturday 3rd September, telling the complete Aston Martin story from the very beginnings to the latest DB11 model. The Club Trophy will feature hundreds of classic cars from across the UK and the best-of-the-best from the nation’s car clubs. Each club submits their individual Concours winners, which are then judged by a panel of Concours of Elegance experts, chaired by HRH Prince Michael of Kent and guest judges which in recent years have included David Gandy, Mark Knopfler, Jodie Kidd and others. 2016’s judging panel will be confirmed in the summer. The Club Trophy winner car is then entered in to the Concours of Elegance in 2016.
Some of the UK’s best classic car specialists will be exhibiting at the Concours of Elegance 2016, including Nicholas Mee, Frank Dale, Talacrest, Eagle GT, Fiskens, Duncan Hamilton and GTO Engineering. Displaying some of their most amazing models, the Specialists’ Showcase offers visitors to not only admire the cars on display but, also to buy them. Concours of Elegance has a host of exclusive partners for this year’s event, including AIG, Autoglym, Bentley, Ferrari, Jaguar Land Rover, Octane, RM Sotheby’s and the Royal Automobile Club. One of the primary aims of Concours of Elegance is to raise money for charity, and this year’s event will be generating funds for The Queen’s Choral Foundation, The Household Cavalry Foundation and Springfield Youth Club Hackney. he BBC Proms have announced the programme for its 122nd season featuring more than 90 concerts over eight weeks, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. New Proms Director David Pickard introduces an innovative series Proms at... that explores spaces outside the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall. The series matches music to four venues across London with Shakespeareinspired works by Purcell at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in Southwark, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle at The Chapel, Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the music of Steve Reich at the Bold Tendencies multi-storey car park in Peckham, and the return of the Proms to the Roundhouse in Camden with new work by British composer David Sawer. Four-hundred years since the death of Shakespeare, the Proms marks the anniversary with a broad survey of music inspired by the Bard, from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet to Hans Abrahamsen’s ‘let me tell you’ and extracts from Kiss Me, Kate. In the year in which the Olympics are staged in Brazil, the Proms celebrates the music and musicians of Latin America with performances from the São Paulo and Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestras, pianists Martha Argerich and Gabriela Montero, conductors Daniel Barenboim and Gustavo Dudamel, cellist Sol Gabetta, and Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who appears at the Last Night of the Proms. A vital part of the Proms mission remains, bringing classical music to new audiences; youth music-making and youth audiences are a major focus this year. The hugely popular CBeebies Proms return, and there will be two Proms devoted to BBC Music’s Ten Pieces II, part of a ground-breaking nationwide initiative for schools designed to open up the world of classical music to primary and secondary school children. The Natural History Museum at Tring challenges you! Do you have what it takes to survive on Antarctica?
T
o get to Antarctica from Tring, you would have to travel almost 14,500 kilometres. With bone-chilling temperatures, Antarctica is the highest, driest, coldest, windiest and most remote place on Earth. It is a continent 57 times the size of the UK and every year hundreds of scientists brave harsh conditions to carry out crucial scientific research, but what’s it really like to live and work there? The Natural History Museum at Tring’s new family exhibition Antarctica: Sub-zero Science asks you to decide whether you could survive the hostile conditions faced by scientists living and working on this fragile continent. You will discover how studying Antarctic animals from the bottom of the coldest ocean to the highest frozen peaks can be tough and even disgusting work: could you handle sifting through seal poo or studying penguin vomit? Learn why this research is vital to helping us understand how climate change and human activity are affecting the planet. Paul Kitching, Head of the Natural History Museum at Tring said “Antarctica is a great experience for the whole family to explore the wildlife of this unique continent and get an insight into the lives of the men and women who work there to better understand life on our planet.”

DROPiT21 Why is it different? DROPiT21 was founded by Sandra Brooks in November 2013. The core focus of the programme is around clean, healthy, eating and exercise. The structured 21 day plan is geared towards people with busy lives, but who want to make that change to live more healthily. The benefit also with it being completely online is that it can be followed at home, abroad, or wherever you have an internet connection.
H
aving been in the Fitness Industry for over 20 years Sandra was very aware that a lot of the weight loss plans on the market had become very out-dated and haven’t moved with the new scientific research out there. She was also very aware that lots of people are being fooled into short-term solutions by many weight loss brands pedalling pills / shakes and potions that do nothing in the way of education.
Sandra explains, “I was determined to develop a programme that not only gives amazing results, but also one that can educate and empower the participant at the same time. I wanted it to be something that would be sustainable once the 21 day programme was over.” 2 ½ years down the line the benefits of the programme are being proven again and again. For example here’s a photo of Jemma who has lost just under 9 stone in 18 months! All this on the back of ONE 21 day programme! WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE 21 DAY PROGRAMME? DROPiT21 is based around eating ‘clean’ healthy, fresh food. Cutting out all processed food and stimulants. NO pills, potions or supplements. You will receive: • Full DROPiT21 Manual • 3 DROPiT21 Recipe Booklets (Meat, Fish & Vegetarian) • Suggested 3 week meal planner • FAQs Document • Daily 10 min home workouts (suitable for ALL fitness levels) • Daily food advice • Group and daily 1-2-1 motivation WHAT WILL YOU ACHIEVE? • Significant Weight / Inch Loss • Increased energy levels • Better complexion • Improved Sleep Patterns • Break addictions to caffeine and sugar • Improved brain function • Improved self-esteem • Better mood
Jemma showing the equivalent in sugar to the weight she has lost over 18 months on the back of ONE DROPiT21 Programme (122 lbs / 55 kg)
A simple change to your diet could also curb or prevent certain life threatening conditions and diseases such as high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Thousands of clients have successfully completed the programme since it’s inception. It’s not just a programme for women either as men are signing up too. And many more men have lost weight and are leading healthier lives too by default, thanks to their wives who have completed the programme! Sandra concludes, “DROPiT21 offers the solution to make a lasting positive change to your lifestyle and general wellbeing. It will change your views relating to food, you’ll beat your cravings and you’ll simply feel great”. Are You
Sun Aware? As summer approaches and we spend more time outside it is important to be aware of the damage the sun can do to our skin. Dr Riccardo Di Cuffa explains more
B
eing out in the sun gives us a feeling of wellbeing and allows us to enjoy outdoor activities and do more exercise, which is beneficial for health and prevention of diseases. However it is easy to overdo sun exposure, which can lead to a range of skin problems, the most serious of which is skin cancer. Sunburn and heavy tans are now accepted as being harmful and may lead to skin cancer. A tan is a sign that skin has been damaged and is trying to protect itself from further damage.
Skin Cancer More than 70,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually in the UK, and someone dies from the disease every 4 hours. Extensive sun exposure is thought to be responsible for the vast majority of cases. In more than 4 out of 5 cases, skin cancer is a preventable disease. There are 3 wave lengths of ultra violet radiation – UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC does not penetrate the earth’s atmosphere, so it is only UVA and UVB that we need to protect our skin from. UVB radiation is mostly responsible for causing sunburn and this is linked with Malignant Melanoma and Basal Cell carcinoma (types of skin cancer).UV radiation also causes sun induced
skin ageing such as wrinkles, leathery skin and brown pigmentation. Whilst this is not as serious as skin cancer it can be socially unacceptable.
Sunscreens Use of a sunscreen with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and high UV protection will help to prevent the skin from burning. The SPF should be at least 25, and should be applied generously and regularly, especially after swimming or vigorous activity. The overall message in terms of sunscreen use is “more is better”.
Top sun safety tips Protect skin with clothes, including a hat and sunglasses Seek the shade between 11am and 3pm Keep babies and young children out of the sun Use a high SPF sunscreen Report any skin changes to your GP
Those at greater risk People with very fair skin that burns easily People with a personal or family history of skin cancer People with more than 50 moles on their body People receiving treatment with immuno-supressive drug THE DETAILS If you have any skin concerns, book in to see one of our GPs today, call 01494 410888

the healing power of

ark Twain famously described hydrotherapy as “so enjoyable that if I hadn’t had a disease I would have borrowed one just to have a pretext for going on.” Modern hydrotherapy can benefit people in the same way it soothed Twain’s rheumatism, as many of the patients using Spire Harpenden’s hydrotherapy pool know well. By immersing the body in water, pressure is taken off painful or stiff joints, allowing greater movement and over time muscle strength can be rebuilt. The temperature of the pool is kept at 34-35°C, just below body temperature, which eases joint pain and ensures that you will be comfortable in the water. Alan Hawes is received treatment at Spire Harpenden’s hydrotherapy pool due to a car accident and chronic arthritis, which makes walking on land “too harsh”. Alan likened the weightless feeling of the hydrotherapy pool to “being on the moon”. It gives him much greater movement and freedom, allowing him to even ride a bike in the pool – something he could never do without the support of the water. Peter Dunkley used the self-help hydrotherapy sessions at Spire Harpenden Hospital. He describes the service as “fantastic” and really values this “low-impact, enjoyable method of exercising”. Peter came to Spire after his second hip replacement, as he was keen to keep up his fitness levels after his operation. Both Peter and Alan use Spire Harpenden Hospital’s Self Help sessions, which are perfect for those who have had previous hydrotherapy experience, and are able to manage their own exercises. Sessions last for approximately 30 minutes, during which time you will be supervised poolside by a hydrotherapy assistant. Other patients use hydrotherapy before a hip or knee replacement, allowing them to strengthen muscles without stressing the joint – which can result in a quicker recovery from this major surgery. Spire Harpenden Hospital has a fully purpose built hydrotherapy suite, which is staffed by qualified and friendly physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants.
74 JUNE 2016
Self-help sessions are open to anyone to book, or alternatively you can be referred by your physiotherapist, GP or Consultant. When booking your place we will ensure that hydrotherapy is right for you. You will start with a consultation with a physiotherapist who will assess your needs, charged at £100. You will then be advised as to whether a self-help or a physiotherapist led session is right for you. Spire Harpenden Hospital offers both physiotherapistled hydrotherapy sessions, and self-help sessions managed by a hydrotherapy assistant. Physiotherapist-led sessions are charged at £64 for a half hour session, and self-help sessions are £15 per half hour. Hydrotherapy is not the only treatment on offer in the physiotherapy department, where services also include acupuncture, post-surgical breast care and women’s and men’s health. HOUSE & GARDEN
SecondAry GlAzinG – A Sound decision? school playgrounds, noisy neighbours, local industry, loud annoying neighbours’ pets or busy high streets. What is “secondary glazing” I hear you say? Most modern secondary glazing is basically one pane of glass (or in rare cases two panes of glass) held within a powder coated aluminium frame (usually white), that is fitted on the inside of an existing external single or double glazed window, usually fixed within the existing window reveal, that sits on the internal window cill or window board, and is then sealed all round and trimmed as if it was an external window. Secondary glazing is available in several different opening styles: horizontal sliding; vertical sliding; sidehinged; lift-out and fixed. For optimum sound reduction performance secondary glazing should be installed at least 100mm from the existing window frame. The downside of this is that you do lose a substantial proportion of your window cill, but the upside is the dramatic reduction in external noise. Please don’t be conned into believing any secondary glazing system will sound proof your room, as it won’t. Sound can travel through pipes, gaps beneath the skirting, air bricks and through walls, especially if the cavities have not been filled with foam insulation. Standard secondary glazing is however the best value for money sound reduction product for windows and doors. If fitted correctly and in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions, then it is a far more effective sound reduction tool than replacement double or triple glazing.
A
lthough not offering all of the features of modern double or triple glazed windows, secondary glazing is still a popular option for many UK home owners, especially for those that live in listed buildings or conservation areas and for those whose properties are next to busy roads where noise pollution is a particular issue. Secondary glazing is not limited to dwellings that have restrictions, as many a home owner or tenant has benefitted both thermally and sound insulation wise by having secondary glazing fitted, where for example they may have particular issues with say aircraft noise, local 76 JUNE 2016
Yes it is true triple glazing offers more sound reduction than double glazing, as it has a 3rd pane of glass for sound to have to travel through, but again don’t be conned, as the improvement between double glazing and triple glazing is only about 2 decibels, not enough for you to notice the difference audibly.
If you are considering having secondary glazing professionally fitted, make sure you choose the right type of frame and glass for each room Also, secondary glazing makes a massive difference thermally, especially if your property only has single glazing, but even if it has double glazing, secondary glazing will help reduce your energy bills, as it will help retain the warmth generated by your heating system. Security wise secondary glazing adds a second barrier to any attempts by intruders to get into your property, especially if you ask for 4mm or even 6mm thick toughened safety glass to be fitted in your secondary glazing. In-fact you can kill two birds with one stone if you specify slightly more expensive 6.4mm laminate glass, as not only is this glass hard to break, it further reduces the amount of external sound that travels through your external 4mm glass panes due to the fact that it is of a greater thickness. Experienced companies who have installed secondary glazing for decades will be able to advise you on the best type of secondary glazing system and glass to suit your particular property or situation. They should also try to ensure the sections of the horizontal or vertical secondary windows mirror your exterior windows, so that from outside passers-by cannot tell that you have secondary glazing installed in your home. Although you can pay extra to have coloured aluminium secondary glazed frames, most secondary that is fitted comes in white as this tends to match in with the majority of peoples internal dĂŠcor. Single glazed horizontal sliding and vertical sliding window frames normally come set in a MDF timber sub-frame, which can then be painted to match the colour of the window reveals or rest of the room. Unlike external double or triple glazing, secondary glazing can be easily removed if required, with simple re-decoration all that is needed to restore the look of the window reveals. Secondary glazing from the inside may not be as nice looking as external windows, but the thermal barrier and sound barrier benefits it provides off-sets any aesthetic disadvantages.
There are many types of secondary glazing including very thin aluminium frames that can be screwed directly into the external frames. Whilst this is the cheapest form of secondary glazing, as these frames don’t have a subframe, it is the least effective both thermally and from a sound reduction point of view, as there is little or no gap between the external pane and the secondary pane, plus there is no thermal break. If you are considering having secondary glazing professionally fitted, make sure you choose the right type of frame and glass for each room, as in the vast majority of cases, you will want access to the external glass to clean or to be able to open any external vents to allow ventilation. Getting a proper job done secondary glazing wise could end up being one of the soundest decisions you ever make, as your property will then benefit from both sound reduction and lower energy bills.

clients to turn their dreams into reality. Every project brings the design team new and diverse challenges. An example of this was for clients who owned a 17th Century grade II listed home. Underneath layers of old wallpaper the client had found 19th Century hand painted murals. Their client’s brief was to tastefully add a vibrant colour scheme, complimenting those found in the wall murals. This was elegantly mixed with luxury materials, sumptuous fabrics, studding details, lacquered furniture & Gold/Silver leaf. “Luxury Contemporary” is a term often used in the world of Interior Design and this is an area where Tobias Oliver Interiors excels. In a recent project the subtle use of tone, colour, fabrics and finishes made for a calming beautiful guest bedroom suite. All the fabrics used are seamlessly tied in throughout the furniture, cushions and window treatments, a soothing sanctuary for any guest staying for the night.
“Our main passion is to search out the most innovative & individual finishes, fabric, furniture & products from suppliers worldwide. This dedication has developed an expansive knowledge base to draw upon, enabling us to expose our clients to the possibility to combine their personal stylistic preferences with something that is not only unique, but equally importantly, reflects them. Our aim is to create a space which flows harmoniously and most importantly, enhances the way in which our clients live.” Tobias Trigg, Director. THE DETAILS Tobias Oliver Interiors Ltd. Serve up a luxury dining experience BY GABRIELLE FAGAN
Our dining dreams are getting grander, and a ‘proper’ dining room is becoming increasingly popular, as we rediscover an appetite for lingering over meals and savouring the opportunity to connect and socialise with loved ones.
A
lmost 60% of us prefer dining areas to be a separate room, and hankering for more formality appears to be in tune with a general change in attitude to mealtimes. TV dinners on the couch are falling out of favour, with 50% of parents making a ‘conscious effort’ to gather the family together for at least one meal a week. With increasingly busy lifestyles, the dining experience can be a welcome break from everyday stress and a chance to reconnect with family members and friends. Not only this, a separate room allows us to temporarily remove ourselves from the post-meal clean-up, which often looms over diners in open-plan kitchen and dining areas. Britain has also turned to the ‘big night in’ trend – inspiring a dinner party revival. We all wish to make more of dining, and a beautifully furnished space where we can fully enjoy the moment. If your dining area’s looking a bit dull, or your dining room rarely used, it’s time to revamp the space. No matter what’s on the menu, this should be a space to suit every occasion... DOWNTON DINING Separate dining rooms are spaces where you can truly play with decor and conjure stately home grandeur (butler optional). This is no longer a room used only for special occasions - it’s the main gathering point for the 80 JUNE 2016
family and where people lavish a lot of care and attention getting the decor and furnishing right. They want dressers, a console table, wine racks, decorative lighting and accessories such as mirrors. It’s all about creating a stylish sanctuary which combines a cosseting, comfortable atmosphere - essential so you can enjoy a meal - with practicality and good storage. TIPS: Round tables generally suit smaller groups better, allowing for intimate gatherings. Avoid large vases or flower arrangements in the middle of a table, as they can form a barrier and discourage interaction. MODERN TASTE The essential ingredients for this recipe are streamlined tables and chairs and a pared-back approach, so clutter is minimal. Dining spaces are one of the hardest working zones in the home and have huge potential when it comes to style. You can opt for sophisticated glamour, think generous tables and overhanging pendant lighting in a combined kitchen/dining area which will make the eating area a stunning focal point. Bench seating has come a long way from the schoolroom and can take up less space than individual chairs and looks more modern. Just add cushions for essential comfort! TIP: Lighting is key - ensure it is sufficiently bright for everyday meals (or tasks like homework) but have dimmers to create atmosphere when required. Over-the-table pendant lights are brilliant for creating an instant wow factor, but don’t overlook floor lamps and table lamps around the room too, to create a more intimate feel. RUSTIC RETREAT Natural materials - especially wood - are ultra-fashionable and suit an informal setting. While we haven’t seen a huge push for one specific style, one thing which has become clear is that large dining spaces are back and here to stay. Eight to 12-seater tables are proving extremely popular, as people focus on creating a central hub for family and friends to gather. Bold, rich colours can make a separate dining area or room feel snug and cosy, while open plan areas can look stunning decorated in light, neutral tones, which blur the boundary between the indoors and outdoors, if they look out onto a garden. TIP: Establish which size table you need - it’s the main focus of the room and must be large enough to seat the required number of people, but too large and it will swamp a room. If space is an issue, opt for an extendable option for versatility.

Grey's anatomy BY GABRIELLE FAGAN
Once upon a time, magnolia ruled in homes. The warm peachy shade was for years apparently the only choice for walls - until out of the shadows came grey.
"I
t's an interior designer's murder mystery - did grey kill magnolia?" teases Kate Watson-Smyth, whose new book, Shades Of Grey, focuses on the power of a grey palette and explains in crystal clear fashion, spiced with a liberal dash of humour, how to use it stylishly. Fresh, modern and easy to match to other colours, it's perhaps hardly surprising that elegant, sophisticated grey is currently regarded as the perfect neutral. There's only one snag - deciding which shade to choose. As if the names for shades weren't baffling enough - take these, 'Elephant's Breath' is actually mid-grey, 'Blackened' is actually pale blue, bestselling 'Down Pipe' is dark grey while 'Clooney' (named after George, natch) is a bluey grey - the number on offer can induce paint chart paralysis. Fifty shades? Forget it Dulux recently expanded its range and now offers a mind-boggling 557 greys. "Grey's one of the hardest colours to get right when it comes to decorating your home. Get it wrong and the effect can be cold and energy-sapping, but if it's right it will look ultra-chic and modern, so although it takes a bit of mastering, it's well worth it," says Watson-Smyth. "To find the best shade, you need to consider a few key things, including which direction your room faces, the prevailing weather and the actual shade you like! Hopefully, by understanding grey, you'll be spared from buying a million sample pots, having walls daubed with confusing splashes of paint, or painting a whole room in the wrong shade and finding it resembles a prison cell! I've done it myself in my kitchen and had to repaint it. Just be warned, once you've gone grey, you'll be hooked." MAKING GREY WORK Grey's enduring popularity over the last decade is partly down to the cold, clear Northern light we enjoy in this country - put simply, grey just
82 JUNE 2016
looks good here - but always evaluate how much natural light a room gets and the direction it comes from. "For a small and dark north-facing room, don't fight the space by painting it a pale colour," says Watson-Smyth. "Instead, embrace its cosiness. Pick a strong shade of grey - as near to black as you dare - and use on every wall. The warm light of a south-facing room allows you more freedom of choice - pale greys can work as well as dark ones. East and westfacing rooms can be tricky, as the light will change from warm to cold as the sun moves across the sky. The secret is to look for a shade which will warm the cool and tone down the warm. For east-facing rooms, try greys with a blue or green base." A shade to consider, she suggests, is Little Greene's French Grey, a warm pale grey which won't dominate or darken a space. Absolute matt emulsion, £19.25 for 1L (www.littlegreene.com). EXPERT VIEW "I started by painting one alcove in my house grey - it's a good way to experiment with a shade - and then fell in love with the colour and painted the whole house in dark grey. It's the best interiors move I ever made," enthuses interior designer Abigail Ahern. “To be safe, buy a sample pot and apply a generous amount in various places in a room, to see how the colour alters at different times of the day.” GREY MATTERS Always consider the effect that your existing furniture, textiles and flooring may have on a paint shade - no grey is ever seen in isolation. "Grey goes with all the other colours on the wheel, so you could throw in some pink until you feel like a change, and then maybe swap it for orange or yellow. It's probably more affordable to swap the accessories than the wall colour," suggests Watson-Smyth. "Be aware, though, that light will bounce off a bright pink sofa and turn walls slightly violet. Modern LEDs often throw out light with a blueish tinge, which will add to the pink purple effect. If you're concerned a room may look too plain painted all grey, use a textured wallpaper as a base to add interest. Skirting boards and radiators painted the same grey as walls will open up and enhance a space and painting a ceiling a paler shade of the wall colour, rather than white, can also be effective."

Stylish interiors
...that are here to stay BY GABRIELLE FAGAN
Decoristas get as much pleasure from beautifully designed interiors as fashionistas get from clothes, but even the most devoted don’t want to be such dedicated followers of trends that it means redecorating every season.
T
hankfully, a little insider knowledge goes a long way and savvy home bunnies know the styles that won’t have a short shelf-life, because their good looks and design credentials will ensure enduring appeal. Plus, some looks are versatile enough to allow for fresh interpretations, which can easily breathe new life into them. Reprise last year’s favourites that are set to make their mark again in 2016. GLADLY GREY Those of us reduced to a ‘rabbit-in-the-headlights’ standstill when confronted by colour charts hailed the passion for grey as a blessed relief. This is surely a ‘Mr Right’ palette - easy-on-the eye, versatile, and grey can be mean and moody or feminine and delicate, depending on the shade you choose. It’s also the perfect foil for a multitude of other colours, so I predict this colour is ‘a keeper’, and our love affair with grey will continue for a long time to come. BRING ON BLING It’s confession time... I’m an interiors magpie and can’t resist something shiny and glittery, so I was utterly delighted by the copper craze, and in 2016 will be following the metal trail to gold. There should be a ‘handle with care’
84 JUNE 2016
label on metallics however, as overdosing on them can all too easily tip a setting into tacky territory, but with a careful ‘less is more’ approach, they’re guaranteed to inject glamour and interest. Go full-on with metallic-finish tiles, a high-end choice for kitchens and bathrooms, or simply confine burnished metal to glittering accessories. MONOCHROME MAGIC Classic, timeless black and white never goes out of fashion, and just as a wardrobe should have at least one little black dress, in my book, every home can benefit from one room decorated in monochrome. It’s a style that’s surprised even the interiors experts with its enduring popularity over the last few years - but not its fans, already well aware of how versatile it is. For life on the really dark side, you can opt for drama - a black feature wall or ceiling - or my choice; white walls and black paintwork, complemented by black framed photographic prints. Leave it minimal or dress it up with simple ‘home jewellery’, like colourful cushions and lamps. Frankly, what’s not to like? RUNNING WILD My votes for last year’s fun, achievable looks went to ‘country lodge’ think hunting, shooting, fishing, with wood panelling and stag heads - and its wilder cousin, frontier decor, evoking the Wild West in prairie chic, fur throws, buffalo heads and tribal prints. Nature will still rule in 2016 but looking forward, my advice is: step away from the squirrels and cute creatures! A more formal botanical look’s coming through, which is less cosy and more sophisticated, and those deer heads should be funky and colourful and a little less like true hunting trophies. Alternatively, embrace a luxury lodge look; natural materials from stone to wood and layered faux furs - more grand mountain retreat than cowboy shack.

A
s one of the most important decisions you will make for your home, choosing the most appropriate windows and doors is likely to take both time and quite possibly, a fair bit of research. Walk down any street in England and you can tell, almost instinctively whether the doors and windows of a home really suit the structure of the building. When the windows are wrong, it is blindingly obvious, but when they have been chosen well, or the original style preserved, the effect is often simply beautiful. For many homeowners, restoring the integrity of the original structure is paramount, whether the home is a country cottage, a Victorian semi, a modern townhouse or a converted barn, we are dedicated to the supply and installation of beautiful timber windows and doors. We’re passionate about wood, with our suite of products leading the market in the breadth of application, uniqueness of design, quality of construction and performance in use. O
ver the years we have built up a strong heritage that has grown with our continued passion for design, quality furniture, dedication to detail and customer service. It’s well researched that the biggest naturel influence on the human state of mind is colour with the possible exception of the weather. Colour surrounds us in our everyday lives, offices, hospitals and classrooms are often painted in colours that are shown to effect mood. The products we buy from our supermarkets are packaged in carefully chosen colours to attract our attention and encourage us to buy them. So why are we so hesitant to use colour in our homes? If we understand the basic psychological effects colour can have on us we can loose some of the fear. Red is known to stimulate your appetite, an excellent choice for a dinning room. Blues’ and greens’ are calming, fresh, natural colours, a great choice for bedrooms. Yellow’s and orange’s are warm, energy boosting, busy colours, perfect for a kitchen perhaps. But before you rush out and but a gallon of orange paint really consider whether you can live with a bright kitchen. This does not mean bright colours don’t have their place; too many homes are painted in various shades of beige (or Taupe as it’s currently called). Perhaps a better approach is to use colour in a toned down form or use the bright colour to accent your room with upholstery, rugs, curtains, ceramics etc. This way the overall effect will be more soothing with flashes of colour, your personal touch. That said, strong colours can be used to great effect in smaller spaces. Hallways, utility rooms or cloakrooms can be stunning and as nobody spends too much time in them you can afford to be bold – experiment.

Lights, Camera, Auction! Auctions on television are exciting prime time and daytime programming. Jones and Jacob in Watlington, who have already hosted Antiques Road Trip are to welcome Flog It back for a fourth visit in July when the 1000th programme in the series is being recorded.

Johannesburg. Another visit saw recording of a rare Japanese miniature cloisonné vase for £14,000 which caused great interest in the room and on the telephone, eventually selling to a specialist who had driven from London just for the one item. A member of the public brought a “scarab” brooch in for valuation by the television experts, who suggested an estimate of £200 or so, which was pleasing as they had paid only £2.50. As the hammer fell at £,1850 there was no more delighted vendor to be found. Auctioneer Simon Jones says “It is probably the best reality TV going” and that having the TV crew in is always
interesting as they never delay or interrupt the proceedings and there is always an extra buzz in the room. Just like the first night of a theatre production. Everything you see on screen happens as it is recorded and is only edited to make it flow with the style of the show. There are no retakes. The fun comes in working the audiences on line and in the room to try to beat the TV experts’ predictions, many are also auctioneers and understand how the market works and also how fickle it can be. This all makes for great entertainment. The Watlington based auctioneers always have a good crowd in for their monthly auctions every second Wednesday of the month but come the TV crew and there is, as they say, “standing room on the upper deck only”. The whole town and half of Henley love to see the experts and discover how close the predictions are to the actual sale prices. There is also the prospect of a hidden gem emerging in the glare of the lights. “By the time we get to the auction we have a pretty accurate feel as to how things will be on the day” says director Jake Wilde “but there is always the chance of something having slipped through and creating a sensation as the hammer falls”. The internet and live bidding have made this more common in all auction rooms, with completion from around the world in every saleroom, little if anything is now missed.
