Waddesdon in Bloom Summer is a magical time at Waddesdon Manor and the perfect time to visit

he picturesque gardens are in full bloom, making the ideal backdrop for enjoying a scenic stroll or relaxed picnic. On the parterre a new bedding design made from tightly planted flowers mirrors the 17th-century Savonnerie carpet that lies in the Red Drawing Room and depicts Apollo, the sun god. In the Coach House Gallery the many beautiful aspects of Waddesdon, including the collection, archives, architecture and gardens are manifested in a new exhibition of works by ceramic artist, Kate Malone. A visual feast of both colour and texture, Kate’s work explores ceramic techniques and offers a different way of looking at the Manor and the people who helped shape it. An abundance of fun family activities will span five weeks of the summer holidays (Wednesday 27 July to Monday 29 August). Mimi the Mynah bird, Waddesdon’s pretty feathered mascot, will be offering a chance to tour Europe, exploring the five countries in which the Rothschild brothers settled. A different country will be the focus each week with themed adventure, including making your own ice-cream in Italy week and climbing a 7.3 metre climbing wall in Austria week. There will also be children-only behind the scenes tours of the Aviary and inside the Manor, with the opportunity to see the famous

elephant automaton in action. And the Woodland Playground is perfect for burning off excess energy before refuelling with a bite to eat at the Stables Café or paying a visit to the new-look shop. You can take a stroll into our dog-friendly woodlands and discover the natural play trail, where around every corner there’s a new challenge to test children’s exploring, balancing and den building skills. We recommend you finish up at Clive’s Den where our rangers have constructed an oversized den, complete with picnic tables. Our storybook-themed play area is the perfect fairy-tale setting allowing children to let their imaginations run wild amongst life-size versions of their favourite fictional characters. We’ve also heard a rumour of a new digger-filled builders’ yard designed for under-10s right next door… Our popular ‘Wild Wednesdays’ are back, providing an outdoor adventure designed for families to partake in the fun. Activities include ‘Rangers Day’, where children join our ranger team for tips and tricks in woodland activities and ‘Peter Pan and the Pirates’, consisting of sword and bow

Howzat!

A Legendary Day Out for Beaconsfield Colts by Michelle Benato

I

t was a dream come true for 12 young cricketers from Beaconsfield CC when they took to the field at the stunning Wormsley Estate, to battle it out against a team from Aston Rowant in front of some of the biggest names in cricket. The stars were gathered at what is widely regarded as the ‘most beautiful cricket ground in Britain’, to celebrate the 80th birthday of West Indian legend, Sir Garfield Sobers, and 50 years of Barbados independence. With the sun making an all too rare appearance, the sound of steel drums reverberating around the estate and the smell of Bajan barbecue wafting from the stalls dotted around the ground, there was more than a hint of Caribbean flavour to the day. The event began with a match between the Paul Getty Xl and the Sir Michael Parkinson Xl, before the Beaconsfield boys, accompanied by coach Jim Slater, took their turn in front of over 1500 spectators. Showing little in the way of nerves despite the crowds, the youngsters proceeded to beat Aston Rowant by 19 runs to win the inaugural Flicx trophy, presented to captain Ollie Walter by 2005 Ashes hero, Simon Jones MBE. Said Jones, ‘There was some real skill on display from both teams, and the Beaconsfield lads showed a lot of composure to win it in front of a big crowd. It’s great to see young lads enjoying the game and playing with such spirit.’ The third match of the day saw some big names line up as the PCA Masters took on the Barbados Legends. Mark Ramprakash, Owais Shah, Geraint Jones, Alex Tudor, Simon Jones, Matthew Hoggard and Devon Malcolm were amongst the PCA talent, while Mike Gatting, Chris Broad, Desmond Haynes, Joel Garner and Sir Garfield Sobers looked on from the pavilion. It was a scintillating game with some world class

2 2 J U LY 2 0 1 6

skills in evidence on both sides, the PCA team eventually triumphing by 7 wickets. Owais Shah and Mark Ramprakash top scored with 61 and 62 (not out) respectively. Throughout the day young cricketers were put through their paces in the nets by a number of their cricketing idols who then signed autographs and posed for selfies with delighted fans. As a cricket fan,it is hard to imagine a more pleasant way to while away the hours on a sunny afternoon in the beautiful Chilterns countryside. Set For Success

With BeckyFest set to wow the crowds on July 15, one local performer has more reason than most to be excited about appearing on the festival stage, writes Michelle Benato

T

alented songstress, Connie Craven, is one half of the newly-formed SugarHouse, an impressive pop duo who will be performing their new single, ‘Boys Like Girls’, on the BeckyFest stage at her old school, Beaconsfield High. Says Connie, ‘It’s going to be weird, but in the best way possible. I used to day dream about playing live in lessons, so to be playing where all of my dreaming took place is going to be quite emotional I think. We really can’t wait, it will be great to see everyone and to play with other great local bands.’ Connie’s musical talents are little surprise given her family background. Mum Beverley is the famous singer-songwriter best known for her 1991 top 5 hit, ‘Promise Me’, whilst dad, Colin Campsie, has written hit songs for the likes of Natalie Imbruglia and Pixie Lott. Both parents are fully supportive of her career, but Connie is keen to make her own way in the music business, together with similarly talented boyfriend and fellow band member, Charlie Sinclair, that is. Originally from a ‘loud, bombastic family’ in Guernsey, Charlie credits his time at Bedales School in Hampshire with inspiring his musical ambitions, although his early work was a long way from the commercial pop sound he and Connie are now producing as SugarHouse. ‘I was really

2 4 J U LY 2 0 1 6

We really can’t wait, it will be great to see everyone and to play with other great local bands into loud, pretentious guitar music’, he explains, ‘but Connie introduced me to good pop music and I’m now a convert. Working with Connie is great, we’re enjoying what we’re doing and we’re really excited about the future.’ Connie and Charlie took a break from their busy recording schedule last month to play a live acoustic set on DJ Mary Flavelle’s Mid Morning Matters show on Marlow FM, the first time local friends and family have had a chance to hear the duo play. Check out the Marlow FM website to hear the show in full. There’s no doubt that the talented pair are destined for greater things, so make sure you catch them at live at Beckyfest on July 15 where they join an impressive line-up. Building on your future Avoid any shortcuts when extending your home - or you could pay the price when you come to sell

H

ouse prices are averaging at £836,246 in Gerrards Cross, so many homeowners may choose the more economical route of renovating and extending their own home to give them they extra living space they crave. But there are two significant criteria that people need to consider before embarking on such a project. The first is planning permission. A requirement that fills some people with dread especially as it can be a slow and laborious process. You may be tempted to listen to your builder who might maintain that permission is not required for the larger kitchen you want or the transformation of your garage into another bedroom. And it’s possible that during the building works, there are no objections from neighbours and the council’s planning officers don’t pay you a visit. You may think you’ve got away with it; until you come to sell your house and if the council did not approve your plans in the first place there could be huge problem. In theory, the thousands you spent on extra sq footage should bump up your house price, but without planning permission it could mean that all the investment and inconvenience you went through was for nothing. Regardless of what your builder says, always seek advice from a property lawyer or your local council on whether permission is required before making any structural changes to your home. If boundaries are impacted or views are impaired, you will need approval before forging ahead with renovations. Satisfying building regulations is another key consideration and hiring a reputable builder will be integral to achieving that. But they are more difficult to find as they don’t have to be independently certified like a gas engineer or electrician. Listen to who your friends or family recommend - word of mouth is invaluable.

2 6 J U LY 2 0 1 6

A trustworthy builder will ensure that all public health, health and safety and structural requirements are addressed such as whether the foundations are the correct depth, the walls are properly insulated or the extension is damp proof. A building inspector will then check the building works both during and after completion, before signing it off. Once you’ve decided to extend your home it’s tempting to get things done as quickly as possible. But it’s vital that solid foundations are put in place both legally and physically otherwise your new build could come crashing down around you. Mike Wragg is a senior associate at B P Collins. Chef Laurie Gear Summer Recipe & Kitchen News

S

ummer is now in full swing and the abundance of summer produce is making its way into the kitchen, garden peas, broad and runner beans, courgettes, blackcurrants, beetroot, fennel, apricots and our namesake globe artichokes, just to name a few. Freshly caught mackerel and Dorset crab are particularly good at this time of year and it is also time to celebrate the English cherry season. The area near to the Artichoke was once renowned for the harvesting of cherries. During the holiday periods, families from the city and suburbs would migrate to the area for harvest time. The cherries would be harvested using very tall ladders, wide at the base and narrow at the top to reach high into the cherry laden trees. The cherries were then picked into straw baskets and lowered to the ground. The industry has long gone now, but, if you look at the hedgerows and country side around you, you will discover large amounts of wild cherry trees and bushes. Residents of nearby Flackwell Heath were once referred to as cherry pickers and still hold a Cherry Pie fair in its memory to this day. This delicious dessert showcases these luscious fruits with a twist on classic flavours.

Summer at Cassiobury Farm The Farm is also home to a private collection of exotic wildlife. One of the watercress beds has become home to a flock of Pelicans and Flamingos. And elsewhere around the Farm you will find Meerkats, Squirrel Monkeys, Capybara, Wallabys, Marmosets, Mara, Artctic Fox, Asian Racoons, Porcupines and Armadillos. At the centre of the Farm is the Kitchen Garden. A range of fruit and vegetables, as well as our apple orchard, complement the watercress growing. And our Herb Garden grown 22 different varieties of herbs, making sure there will always be something to add flavour to any recipe. Providing the perfect backdrop to the site is a 3-acre fishing lake which was stocked in the 1970’s with traditional English carp . . . as well as holding tench, bream, pike and many others. The Farm also has a trout stream and grows and sells Rainbow Trout. The Farm sits within Cassiobury Park, a 190 acre ancient parkland. It is bordered by the Grand Union Canal on one side and the Gade River on the other, and is a hidden gem of peace and tranquillity. The Family Open Days are a wonderful day out. As well as the chance to see all of our rare breed farm and exotic animals and see a working farm, there are taster fishing lessons on the lake, a bouncy castle, face painting, food stalls . . . . even our own crazy golf course to enjoy. T

he five year restoration project at Cassiobury Farm & Fishery is reaching fruition and the Farm is throwing open its gates again this year for its summer Family Open Days on the 1st, 6th, 13th, 22nd and 27th of August. A farm was first recorded on the site in the 1820’s and grew to become one of the largest watercress farms in the country, able to produce some 2 million bags of cress per year. Fed by the crystal clear water of the Gade River and the natural artesian wells bringing spring water through the chalk aquifers, the Farm had the perfect growing conditions for watercress. Sadly the farm stopped production in the 1980’s and the site fell into disrepair. The waterbeds silted up and the site became derelict. In 2011 the site was renamed Cassiobury Farm & Fishery and a restoration project began, both to restablish watercress farming and to build a rare breed’s agricultural centre on the property. Today the Farm is a hive of activity. Our Rare Breeds Farm includes Gloucester Old Spot Pigs, Miniature Horses and Donkeys, Soay Sheep, Anglo Nubian Goats, Reindeer, Red & Fallow Deer as well as broad collection of rare breed Turkeys, Chickens, Ducks, Pheasants, Guinea Fowl and more. The Farm sells its own range of venison, lamb and pork, as well as producing its own variety of sausages.

Bringing history to life

ne of our wonderful regular customers at the bookshop recently made her weekly visit to pick up some books for her children. Arriving at the till after a browse she exclaimed “SHE is why I love British history!” Taken slightly aback, I deduced that she was not referring to the Beatrix Potter & Enid Blyton books she had placed on the counter, lovely as they are, but instead the poster of Philippa Gregory above my head. Growing up in France, you see, she was not taught British history in schools and knew nothing of it until reading first Philippa’s Wildacre series. Having fallen in love with Philippa’s recreation of past lives she moved onto her two brilliant sequences of novels; The White Queen and Tudor Court, and she has not stopped reading her ever since. This is why we are so excited that Phillipa is coming to talk in August. She brings British history to life for her millions of readers, letting in daylight upon magic and showing us how people really lived, loved and lost. Her new book, which she’ll be launching with us on Tuesday 9th August at St Clement Danes, continues in her marvellous tradition. Returning to the Tudors Philippa tells the story of how how three sisters, each future Queens of England, Scotland and France met at the Tudor Court. But even as they experience betrayals, dangers, loss and passion, the three sisters find that the only constant in their perilous lives is their special bond, more powerful than any man, even a king. Continuing the historical theme, we are also delighted to be hosting the magnificent & heartstopping Wendy Holden on the 21st September at St Helen’s School. At our literary festival last year she was a highlight for many of our readers, telling the beguiling and deeply moving story of three mothers sent Mauthausen concentration camp in the Second World War and each of their babies that were born there. The book, Born Survivors, as an act of biography deserves to join the great Holocaust memoirs of Primo Levi, Władysław Szpilman and Anne Frank on your bookshelves. Crucially, it evokes the terror and anguish into which these children were

3 6 J U LY 2 0 1 6

born while reconciling it with the knowledge, as one of the mothers later tells her daughter Hana, that having the children put them in graver danger, but renewed their courage to survive. “I wanted to have you, so I did everything I could to stay alive. You saved me and I saved you” she would tell Hana later in life. We are also delighted that, to celebrate the 25th Anniversary

Philippa Gregory is why I love British history! of Taken on Trust his terrific memoir of a time in solitary confinement as a prisoner in Beirut we are delighted to host Terry Waite. He, as many of you will know, went to Beirut as a church envoy in 1987 to negotiate the release of a number of hostages being held there. As the memoir recounts, however, he himself was taken hostage during the negotiations and was held captive for 1,760 days. What follows is a truly remarkable story of inner resolve and survival and we are so fortunate to be able to welcome him to Merchant Taylor’s School on the 12th September. If this isn’t quite enough, then you can dress your mind in the autumn when our Literary Festival returns from the 12th to the 16th of October as we bring the finest novelists, historians, biographers and bon vivants of all stripes to Chorleywood and Gerrards Cross.

THE DETAILS All of our tickets, which are vouchers redeemable against the books, are available from our bookshops in Chorleywood (01923 283566) & Gerrards Cross (01753 885429) or online at chilternbookshops.co.uk

Chris Wheeler, Stoke Park’s award winning Executive Chef will make his Great British Menu debut when the BBC 2 show hits our screens later in the year competing in the South West region!

O

riginally from Swanage in Dorset, Chris’ passion, enthusiasm and culinary excellence was spotted and nurtured from a young age by celebrated Chef Jean Christophe-Novelli. Chris worked alongside Novelli and was his right-hand man for ten years, where he learned a great deal and gained even more experience and developed his passion for food. Chris joined Stoke Park in 2003 and has been building up the culinary reputation since, achieving 3 AA Rosettes for the fine-dining restaurant, Humphry’s as well as overseeing the entire culinary operation. Chris is a familiar face on our screens having appeared on Hell’s Kitchen 2, Chefs Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, Sunday Brunch and Saturday Kitchen, but this is the first time he will be going head-to-head with other leading chefs during a tense competition to bake the ultimate banquet. ‘ I’m really looking forward to being a part of this series of Great British Menu- it is such honour to be a part of the show and having the chance to come up with some fabulously creative ideas.’ commented Chris Wheeler. This year the series is making history by being the first TV show to be filmed in the Palace of Westminster. And the winner will be given the prestigious prize of cooking at the banquet in honour of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s ‘Great Britons.’ In the regional heats, the chefs’ dishes will be judged by

4 0 J U LY 2 0 1 6

eight competition veterans. They include Daniel Clifford, Simon Rogan, Phil Howard, Richard Corrigan, Michael O’Hare and Angela Hartnett. The two chefs who are scored most highly by the Veteran judges will then present their four course menu to award winning restaurant critic, Matthew Fort, doyenne of British cookery, Prue Leith, and acclaimed restaurateur, Oliver Peyton. Each week the panel of three will be joined by a guest judge who has been feted in his or her field. Together, with the Great British Menu judges, they will decide which chef will be the champion of their region and worthy of potentially becoming an ambassador for contemporary British cuisine. The eight regional winners will then compete in the National Finals for a chance to cook at the Great Britons Banquet at the Houses of Parliament. The next series of Great British Menu starts on the 29th August 2016. Tom Howley staff set the charity wheels in motion for South Bucks Hospice

O

Staff at the Tom Howley kitchen showroom in Beaconsfield backed South Bucks Hospice during two exciting events at the end of June. First, MasterChef finalist Sven-Hanson Britt was special guest on June 25 at the showroom. Sven, who starred in the hit BBC show two years ago, showcased his skills as Tom Howley staff raised funds through a raffle for the Hospice. Next, the showroom in Station Road held a coffee and cake morning on Monday June 27 as staff welcomed a cycling team riding 600 miles across the UK for charity. The eight cyclists were from the firm’s parent company Neville Johnson Group, including some from other Tom Howley branches. The group included Neville Johnson’s CEO Nigel Pailing. Each of the Tom Howley showrooms held an event to celebrate the team’s journey and to raise as much money as

“We chose to have our baby with the Kensington Wing after being highly recommended by a friend. Having been very nervous about labour and suffering with anxiety in my pregnancy it was very impor tant to me that I met the midwife who was going to be with us on the day. Lucy made sure I met all of the lovely midwives in advance, which went above and beyond my expectations, and I was very impressed with the level of kindness and understanding that all of the team showed me. Each time I went for an appointment I was reassured and comfor ted; I felt the care I received was not only very professional but most impor tantly personal. The day I went into labour I was cared for by the lovely Ali and Sophie. I had the most amazing birth experience and that is thanks to the very special team. I'm actually looking forward to doing it again with Baby number two, that's not something I thought I would have said a few months ago! ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

W

ith a Brit winning Wimbledon for the second time in four years, you might be inspired to dust off your tennis racquet and take them for a quick spin with visions of being Andy Murray. Tennis is a fantastic sport to work out the whole body but it can cause a painful elbow or injuries to the shoulder and knees due to the forces exerted when you slam down your winning point. Dr Ade Adejuwon, consultant in sports and exercise medicine at Spire Harpenden Hospital gives advice for taking care of your elbow while playing racquet sports this year: “Lateral elbow tendinopathy, otherwise known as tennis elbow, is the most common cause of pain on the outside of the elbow. Although it can occur in up to 50% of recreational tennis players, which is where it gets its name from, it can just as well affect individuals from all walks of life who perform activities that require repetitive lifting from the elbow and/or gripping e.g. recreational (gym) or occupational (builders, carpenters) weight-lifters. Tennis elbow pain typically comes on gradually, although occasionally the individual may recall a specific mechanism of injury. Although the pathology is at the elbow the pain can radiate down the outer aspect of the forearm causing a weakness of grip strength that can make it difficult to hold a racquet, pick up objects, or if bad enough give a firm handshake. It is important to note that there are other causes for lateral elbow pain such as elbow osteoarthritis, entrapment of nerves around the elbow, or referred pain from wear and tear in the neck so it is crucial that the correct diagnosis is made as it can obviously affect how the patient is managed. Presently there is no one treatment for tennis elbow and a multimodal approach is usually recommended. Self-management through activity modification, applying topical anti-inflammatory, using a wrist splint or forearm counterforce strap may be enough to control symptoms. Exercises and stretches as prescribed by a physical therapist is the main form of treatment but if unresponsive there are some novel treatments like shockwave treatment or platelet-rich-plasma injections (also known as PRP) that have been shown to be effective. A small group of patients may go on to surgery if all else fails. 6 UL LY Y 2016 68 6 JJ U

Dr Adejuwon’s advice for playing with tennis elbow: • Regularly check the strap on your racquet grip – a lot of injuries can be caused by gripping the racquet too hard because the grip has worn thin. • Wearing a “tennis elbow splint” during games can help support the tendons and ease the pain • Applying a topical anti-inflammatory gel or taking oral anti-inflammatories , if there are contra-indications, can ease any discomfort after exercise. • If you are suffering with your elbow visit a physiotherapist or osteopath, as they can provide exercises to help ease the pain. • If you are still struggling, you can visit a consultant in sports and exercise medicine, like myself, or an upper limb specialist. Treatment options include shockwave therapy and PRP injections – although no one treatment works for all, so treatment would be tailored to you.

Ways to avoid developing tennis elbow include regular stretching and strengthening of the forearm muscles. Also aim to strengthen the muscles of the arm, shoulder, and upper back so that they take some of the load off the forearm muscles. Use equipment appropriate for your size and ability: in tennis check your racquet grip is not worn or loose.” At Spire Harpenden you can see expert consultants, have a scan in the state of the art radiology department and physiotherapy, which includes a hydrotherapy pool. Rhythm Awareness Statistically 1 in 4 people will develop a heart rhythm disorder. Every 15 seconds someone suffers an Atrial fibrillation (AF) related stroke. The amazing thing is, if this can be picked up early, a stroke can be preventable.

H

eart rhythm disorders were making headline news when footballer, Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the pitch during a televised football game due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Sadly every year, 100,000 people die from SCA in the UK. Sometimes arrhythmia disorders can be picked up early by doing a simple pulse check. There is now a campaign to get the public to regularly check their pulse. This should be particularly done if you have experienced: • Palpations (racing heart) • Feeling faint • Short of breath • Ache in the chest/ indigestion type symptoms • Sudden collapse How to check your pulse To assess your resting pulse rate in your wrist, sit down for 5 minutes beforehand. You will need a watch or clock with a second hand. • Place your hands on your wrist. You may need to move your fingers around a little to find the pulse. Keep firm pressure on your wrist with your fingers in order to feel your pulse. • Using the clock count for 30 seconds, and multiply by 2 to get your heart rate in beats per minute. If your heart rhythm is irregular, you should count for 1 minute and do not multiply. A normal heart rate is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. Hints and Tips: • It is a good idea to try and familiarise yourself with your baseline pulse. • Take your pulse at various points throughout the day (before and after various activities). • Try taking your resting pulse when you wake in the

7 0 J U LY 2 0 1 6

morning and before going to bed. • It is normal for your pulse to change depending on what activity you do. • There are normal reasons why your pulse may be slower or faster. This may be due to your age, medications, caffeine, level of fitness, any other illness including heart conditions, stress and anxiety. It is vitally important you see your doctor if: • Your pulse seems to be racing or seems to be slow some or most of the time and you are feeling unwell. • If your pulse feels irregular (“jumping around”), even if you do not feel unwell. Certainly many people may have their normal pulse rate over 100 beats/min (bpm) and less than 60 bpm. Irregularity is quite difficult to assess since the normal pulse is a bit irregular, varying with the phase of respiration. You should see your doctor if you have a persistent heart rate above 120 bpm or below 40 bpm. Your heart is VERY special. Learn what is normal for you. Support the excellent work being done to secure early diagnosis and management of rhythm disorders.

CHECK YOUR PULSE.

Why Homeowners are Warming to

SoLid rooF CoNSerVAtorieS m any UK homeowners can be exasperated by badly designed and specified existing conservatories, complaining they are simply too hot in summer and too cold in winter. It is therefore important that if a double glazed glass conservatory is what is required, that it is expertly designed and installed by well-established conservatory experts so it can be used all year round thanks to heat reflective glass, an insulated base, a roof vent to release any heat build-up, plenty of ventilation and a high double glazing specification to keep the cold out and warmth in. The alternative to a glass or polycarbonate roof, is an “insulated warm roof , better known as solid roofs with tiles. There is the traditional full blown extension option

7 4 J U LY 2 0 1 6

with either a flat roof or a timber pitched roof with heavy slate roof tiles, or nowadays there is a lightweight, yet incredibly robust aluminium solid roof option that offers even better insulation than traditional roofs, plus a choice of attractive lightweight tiles in both aluminium and UPVC (the latter are more expensive, but aesthetically look like traditional slate tiles). Just like double glazed glass roofs, solid roofs can be installed on conservatories in a matter of days. By opting for a solid roof, rather than a standard glass one, you will improve thermal and acoustic insulation. However, you do lose the natural daylight afforded by glass roofs, whilst gaining a structure that is more akin to an extension, hence why solid roof conservatories fall under the England and

assuming a) the P.D. rights have not been withdrawn, and/ or b) there are sufficient P.D. rights left to build the solid roof conservatory to the size you’d like it to be. If your dwelling is a “new build” developers sometimes place

If you do choose a solid roof instead of a double glazed one, you will possibly need Planning Permission Wales Building Regulations. Both aluminium tiled and UPVC tiled solid roofs can be built in many conservatory styles including: Edwardian, Victorian, Lean-To or Bespoke conservatories to name but a few. The whole point of buying any modern conservatory is that you should be able to use it as and when you like. It can be incredibly annoying if it was not designed for 24/7 use, and thanks to not having enough ventilation, an insulated base or heat reflective glass, or is cold during the winter as the double glazing fitted was not of a sufficiently high specification. A solid “warm” roof offers even better roof insulation, primarily because it contains insulated plywood and rigid insulation board. Any loss of natural sunlight as a consequence of opting for a Warm Roof can be off-set by the inclusion of one or more double glazed Velux style roof windows. These sloping roof windows keep you in close contact with the outside and afford views of the sky above. They will also help ventilate the space which you will be particularly thankful for on hot summer days. If you already have a conservatory that is nowhere near as comfortable as you want it to be, then in all likelihood you’ll need to replace the entire structure (apart from the base and any walls) with one that has a Warm Roof or high specification double glazed roof, windows and doors. If you do choose a solid roof instead of a double glazed one, you will possibly need Planning Permission, so make sure you check what permissions you are legally obligated to obtain (and how much they each will cost) before ordering a solid roof conservatory. If building a new solid roof conservatory onto a new foundation, you may not need planning if you are adding a warm roof structure under Permitted Development Rights,

restrictions on them, so you would be wise to check your particular situation out. Solid Roof Conservatories are in the eyes of the law an extension, so Building Regulations Approval is required, whether you are building a new one, or having a glass roof replaced with a solid one. In the latter case, if your conservatory was built under planning permission, you will need to re-apply for planning, as you are changing from an exempt structure (i.e. a conservatory with a glass roof) to a non-exempt extension.

THE DETAILS If you would like a free design consultation with an experienced expert, contact Hazlemere Window Company on 01494 854266 , who since 1985 have been manufacturing and installing double glazed conservatories and orangeries and also supply and fit solid roof conservatories. olour may be cool currently - but if you prefer to dance to a different decor tune, and yearn for light-filled, calm, easy-onthe-eye rooms, then a white palette’s the obvious choice. Ignore the ‘white is for wimps’ wisdom; that only the brave stylishly splash on fashionably bright shades and enjoy a technicolour world, while the rest of us scaredy-cats pale at the sight of colour charts and scurry back to the safety of neutrals. What this theory fails to recognise is the simple fact that white works. What’s not to like about a palette which makes spaces appear lighter and larger - and with such a huge variety of shades on offer (yes, really!), from subtle and warm, to crisp and sharp, there’s bound to be at least one, or more, that suits. “White, combining all the colours of the visible spectrum, is a dramatic, affirmative choice, rather than a passive one,” declares Karen McCartney, champion of a white palette and co-author of White Rooms: Decorating With Style, Pattern And Colour. “White creates the sense of a blank canvas, a fresh beginning upon which we can impose our decorative style,” she adds. “Light reflects off white; it bounces around and has the effect of lifting the spirits.

“And its credentials have been proven over time - white’s been used for generations and in many cultures, to symbolise honesty, purity, perfection and spirituality.” She firmly believes white has the power to “set rooms free” and suits any style of home, from modernist to Moroccan interiors, country cottages to industrial lofts - examples of which all feature in the beautifully illustrated book. “It may be, of course, that other factors are needed to make a white scheme work - textured neutrals against a soft white background, a hint of pink in the paint to tie in with a key decorative feature, or being clever about the way in which gloss and matt contrasts. There are all sorts of additions which can enhance a white space, whether its sheer white curtains or shutters at a window, or lighting, from natural light to LED.” Sound all-white to you? Time to freshen up those rooms...

Bewildered by the vast array of white paint shades? Follow a few simple guidelines to ensure a white scheme works. “Simple white reflects light and helps to make a space appear bigger, but can feel cold and impersonal,” says Marianne Shillingford, creative director at Dulux. “Try a combination of pure

white and a warm off-white with added lightreflective properties, such as Absolute White and Morning Light from our Light & Space range. “Layers of subtle neutrals make a different kind of impact on a room than deeper shades, but they’ll still make an impact. The creative use of light from floor to ceiling brings subtle shades to life at night too, and of course, you can add colour to a neutral room in accessories. “

“What’s so appealing about white is its great democracy. It doesn’t discriminate between high architectural art and a warehouse interior, where garage paint can cover every surface, rendering ugly pipes, bricks and stained floorboards invisible,” says McCartney. “White allows the eye to float over every surface, and the furnishings, art and objects to take centre stage. Patterned pastels, bold artworks, antiques, sculpture, designer pieces and found objects all work stylishly within the context of white.”

Interesting white objects in a group act as an eyecatching feature in a space. “The joy of grouping white objects together is that while they may vary slightly in shade, this only adds to the interest they provide when displayed in a pleasing cluster,” says McCartney. “Pay particular attention to the shape, materials, height and placement of objects, to ensure that, whether they’re showcased in front of a dark or light wall, their form is easily defined.”

Annie Sloan has been working with paint in interiors for more than three decades, and there are “endless possibilities” with her Chalk Paint range, which sticks to just about any surface - inside or outside the home - without the need for priming or sanding. Go on, grab a paintbrush and give it a go! Johnstone’s Paint is also joining in the fun this summer with their new Carnival Colour collection. We love Crushed Pineapple, cited as a creative and happy hue, with the highest saturation levels on the colour spectrum.“It’s perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, utility rooms and hallways,” says Donna Taylor, Johnstone’s Paint senior colour consultant. “Due to its brightness levels, it will lift the dullest of rooms in a full wall format with ease, and is ideal for rooms with low natural light. Its brightness also allows this colour to be used as a feature with a harmonious or contrasting bold shade, rather than accompanying it with an offwhite or pastel tone.” Shutters in a bright palette

can also help bounce light around rooms, and can be a worthwhile investment as they’re built to last. ‘’Shutters are a stylish way to make an impact. Unlike blinds or curtains, shutters do not obscure windows, allowing you to make a feature of beautiful period details and adding kerb appeal to the outside,” says Murray Clark, director of The Shutter Store. “To pack a punch, opt for a bold bright shade with our ‘Colour Match Service’. Yellow’s associated with happiness and optimism.’’

A few rays of sunshine allows your outdoor space to be lived in, so make the most of it with some well-chosen accessories. All-weather cushions and pillows, in pinks and oranges, will pull the colours of the house into the garden, and make it feel like another room, where you can entertain, dine and relax. “When stocking up your outdoor kitchen, think low-maintenance,” advises Hedeman Gueniau. “Use durable materials that can stand the weather changes. Melamine, plastic and treated wood are all good. Then you don’t have to take everything inside all the time, but just leave it out until the season is over. “Lanterns for candles create a cosy light when dusk sets in. Being outside means you have the opportunity to go a bit crazier when decorating than you would inside. Pick the brightest plates and the funkiest prints.” ANNIE SLOAN CHALK PAINT, ENGLISH YELLOW, £18.95 FOR 1 LITRE, AVAILABLE FROM ANNIESLOAN.COM

WHO’S THERE?

Elizabeth Assaf of Urban Front, bespoke contemporary front doors, gives some insight into what questions to ask about the security of your front door and entrance

M

ost of us don’t realise the amount of choice out there when it comes to choosing the security for our front door. A lock and a deadlock is all most people want until you tell them how many options there are and what endless opportunity to play with their entrance system is available. Here are a few questions to ask yourself about your home and entrance, first, before deciding on that most important element - the security. How much security do you need? If you have gates for instance, the security of your front door may not be so essential. Does your area have a good track record when it comes to break ins? Do you need a front door that has multiple locking options? A motorised locking system that locks the minute you enter your home may make you feel more secure in an area which may be near a river or by a busy road. Do you have a large house? Will you need to be able to open your front door remotely from another floor or even when you are not home? In this case, you may need an electric latch on your lock which allows you to buzz people in. You could have an electric latch or a motorised lock, the latter being much more secure. Do you need your front door to be controllable using something similar to Savant or Control 4 systems or using a phone app? It is now a much easier option to have your lock or entry system attached to your phone and controllable at the touch of a button. Are you worried about your children losing their keys?

8 2 J U LY 2 0 1 6

Or do you have family or staff visiting who may need constant access? Would a Finger print entry system be the best option for you and your family? Finger Print entry allows you to enter or remove up to 100 finger prints at any one time. Will you actually use your front door often? Quite a few people have secondary doors that really act as the main door to the home. Perhaps that door and its’ function is more important to you. Do you need to be able to see your visitors through a door viewer or an entry system? An entry system with a screen could also be a way for you to see who is waiting outside. Do you need a letterbox in your door? Have you considered where it will go and how it effects the security of your door? A letterbox in the middle of your door may make it easier for an intruder to access your lock (although with difficulty – its best to give them no way in if you can). Have you thought about the security of the glass in your door or in the side lite? High security glass is sometimes misunderstood and confused with laminated and toughened standard double glazing. Security glass is much more than laminated and toughened glass and when used correctly, can be tougher to get through than a wall but can be very costly. THE OLYMPIC POOL FIT FOR FAMILY LIFE

T

he Burchfield family are one of many who have recently made the decision to transform their home and family life with a bespoke swimming pool from Origin Leisure.

THE BURCHFIELD’S STORY After seeing the pleasure that a pool house has brought to the family life of their friends, the Burchfield family set their hearts on having one of their own. Although many friends had invested in an Origin Leisure indoor pool, the family decided that they wanted to conduct some initial research, so set about exploring the market. ey soon found that Origin Leisure offered a bespoke ‘Concept to Completion’ service. e company’s internal group of designers, architects and builders create and construct pool projects from beginning to end. is makes the process hassle free, 8 44 JJUUL YL Y2 0 21 60 1 6 3

which was ideal for the family given the hectic lives the Burchfields and their three teenagers lead. With over 35 years’ experience in indoor swimming pool design, Origin Leisure is able to handle every element of the complex design, planning and build. is means that there is no need to source individual contractors. e Burchfields could achieve harmony in their building project and have as much or as little input as they wanted. PLAN During the initial stages the family met with members of the Origin Leisure team, who wanted to bring them one step closer to their dream pool house. e team offered guidance on the different styles available and, based on the Burchfield’s vision, put together comprehensive designs, from initial concepts through to architectural drawings and colour visuals.

As well as making the Burchfield’s vision come to life, Origin Leisure was able to ensure that the proposed plans fell within permitted development. is meant that the building inspector was able to agree the concept following only one visit. Carolyn Burchfield said: “e early meetings were incredibly constructive. We talked about the basic styles that Origin Leisure offers and were impressed with the adaptability that each model offered. We knew roughly what we wanted, and were delighted that every one of our thoughts was considered and built to the first plans. We chose the Olympic pool because of the flexibility of its design, and the style suited our home. We wanted a pool table and a gym, and the initial plans created a perfect space for these.”

THE OLYMPIC RANGE What made the Olympic pool so appealing to the Burchfield family was the popular state-of-the-art features and the different facilities that can be incorporated to suit their requirements. e facilities included an exercise pool with swim jets, a fully fitted sauna, gym facilities and changing rooms. As the range is inspired by the London Olympics, the pools are designed with healthy living in mind, which makes it an ideal design for family life. DESIGN As they worked through the details of every design aspect, Origin Leisure’s structural engineers and technical team offered the Burchfields a range of options to meet their requirements. It was also important to the Burchfields to ensure that the pool house fitted with the style of their home, so the interior and exterior finishings were designed with this in mind. e family found that Origin Leisure was extremely flexible in the planning stages, accommodating the back and forth of ideas as original plans were tweaked and everyone in the family had an input. BUILD roughout the Burchfields build the entire construction was managed by the same helpful team, which meant that there were only familiar faces on their property. e build team dealt with everything, right through to liaising with utility companies.

MAINTAIN Following the build, Origin Leisure’s After Sales service has helped the Burchfields sustain the quality they expected from their pool house. Any minor snags following completion were dealt with in record time and the team have made monthly visits as part of the service contract. is level of service will be ongoing as Origin Leisure offers routine checks for every season of the year. is includes maintenance support, water health checks and much more. AN OLYMPIC SUCCESS e Burchfield family couldn’t be happier with their Olympic pool house. Its versatility provides the perfect place for all family members to unwind. Whether that be a late night swim, a teenage get-together, a quick game of pool or a place to enjoy a glass of wine! When asked if they were satisfied with their new pool house, the answer was: “very much so. Everyone has been incredibly helpful, and it has improved family life in ways we didn’t envisage. Origin know their stuff!”n

Clients are encouraged to couple their own creativity utilising the knowledge of the in house design team throughout the process. “Before we start on a new project it is so important for us to understand how someone lives and works.
