Exceeding expectations We talk to Mav Sandhu, a Partner at Landmark Group about their stunning new project in Gerrards Cross, Fulmer Drive.

It’s lovely to see you again. What have Landmark been up to since we last spoke?

Good to see you too. We have been very busy since the March issue. Not only was Coombe Vale completed and successfully launched, we have also finished a further two luxury properties in Gerrards Cross. Our Windsor Road development was completed in July and the show house

In the past six months, what has been the highlight?

Well we are incredibly proud of all of our achievements thus far and the volume of work is very encouraging. I think our highlight has been the feedback we have received from our Fulmer Drive show house. Surpassing the success of Coombe Vale was always going to be a huge task. Our expectations had increased exponentially for Fulmer Drive so it was important to us that the first responses to the show house were positive. All the feedback we have received so far has been very humbling

n March we sat down with Mav Sandhu, a Partner at Landmark Group, to find out more about the architectural, planning and development firm that is taking Gerrards Cross by storm. Six months on from our first meeting we decided to catch up with the company and discuss their progress, including their flagship project at Fulmer Drive.

So tell me about Fulmer Drive. What makes the development special?

As a developer, but moreover a designer, we had a distinct vison for these houses. Upon entry there is a vast atrium above you and an unobstructed view through to the gardens.

All the principle rooms lead off the entrance hall and are well appointed both in terms of space and specification. As difficult as it was, we believe that we have exceeded the level set by Coombe Vale. The home automation is by Crestron and the kitchens were designed by Extreme Design in Gerrards Cross. The choice in colour, texture and cabinetry work harmoniously with each other.

How long did the development take to complete?

That’s a tricky one. When Landmark started on Fulmer drive we acquired two houses and obtained planning consent for three. Work then stagnated for a period of time whilst we

were offered to procure the adjacent house and achieved planning for two more. That brought our development to five houses. Without the downtime however I think we would have been on site for a little over a year. We are very fortunate at Landmark in that we have a lot of in-house resource. And by that I mean architects, interior designers, engineers and project managers who all work very closely on a house by house basis. In this way, any day to day issues that occur (and believe me there are plenty!) can be resolved quickly and effectively.

Do you have a release date for Fulmer Drive as of yet?

The Fulmer Drive development will be released in two phases beginning in the middle of September 2016 and will be jointly marketed by Knight Frank and Strutt & Parker.

Apart from the uber luxury homes you’re developing in Gerrards Cross, what else is the firm working on?

I think a lot of people know us just as property developers, but this is far from the case. As you know my background

is in planning and we still undertake applications for clients no matter how big or small. Generally, upon approval of planning permission, the client will retain us for structural design and architectural interior layout packages. This forms one of the core branches of our business.

Other than that, I am currently looking at a number of luxury apartment projects to supplement the homes that we regularly build. I see a trend in the market where locals are downsizing from traditional houses to large, well-appointed ‘super’ apartments with all the trimmings. So alongside our house launches of 2017 don’t be surprised if we are discussing alternative living!

There has been a lot of talk recently that Brexit has had an effect on the property market. Have you seen any changes in your business?

I think that whenever there is such big change there is always an element of uncertainty that creeps into the market. We certainly saw that in the immediate aftermath of the vote but since then things have settled down. All I can say is that at Landmark we are going to continue to complete our work to our usual high standard. We hope that this is enough to quash any reservations buyers may have about purchasing a home.

2016 is set to be an exciting year for the world-famous Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

s well as returning to the Wycombe Swan for its seventh season 2016, the Orchestra will celebrate the 70th anniversary since it was founded by Sir Thomas Beecham. Bringing together outstanding soloists, conductors and pieces of music, the season at the Wycombe Swan will delight audiences.

Residents of Buckinghamshire will be able to hear world-class classical music performed right on their doorstep when the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra returns to the Wycombe Swan. Fresh from international tours to Geneva, Istanbul and USA, the Orchestra is excited to be bringing classical music to High Wycombe. Managing Director of the RPO Ian Maclay said, ‘It’s wonderful to be returning to the Wycombe Swan during our 70th anniversary year. On Sunday 4 September the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Associate Conductor Alexander Shelley joins for a classical concert perfect for the start of autumn.

intense Fingal’s Cave, which depicts the stormy tides and still waters in Scottish scenery. The centrepiece of tonight’s programme is without doubt one of the most popular works ever written for the piano – Grieg’s Piano Concerto. Its dramatic opening leads into rich lyrical melodies and passages of showstopping virtuosity, performed

by Danny Driver, a pianist of ‘impeccable technique and musicianship’ (Gramaphone).

Brahm’s majestic Symphony No.4 opens in a dramatic vein and continues to flow with an urgency and lyrical beauty.

DELIGHTS We’ve had a terrifically exciting summer season at the bookshop and we intend to keep you in touch with everything stimulating, novel and amusing in the world throughout Autumn. As an old rector of my alma mater once put it; so as to give us memory so that we may have roses in December.

ot to startle you, of course, December and its frightful winter remains far off but we’ll bring you the sweetness and light of summer as long we can. A year round endeavour for us booksellers, admittedly, but every so often our job is made a little easier by rather magical books (and their wonderful authors) coming our way and extending our seasons.

So imagine, if you will, the joy of a book walking into the bookshop about how a young woman, Ellie, begins receiving carte postales adorned with beautiful photographs of Greece and signed only with the letter ‘A’.

For months they continue arriving, the alluring cards put up on Ellie’s wall. Then one day they stop. With a wall of cards and a whole country imagined through them she resolves to make the journey to the Greece and its island environs.

This is the universe of Victoria Hislop’s new novel Carte Postales from Greece, harking back to readers’ favourite The Island and including colour copies of the postcards sent to our protagonist. Take on the Challenge of the CHILTERNS FOR CHARITY Local charity, Rennie Grove Hospice Care invites you to join one of its biggest fundraisers. Now celebrating the event’s eighth year, the Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge has proved there is something for everyone.

et amongst the beautiful surroundings of the Ridgeway National Trail, Rennie Grove is expecting hundreds of people – and their dogs – to sign up for the challenge that takes place on Sunday 4 September. Walkers’ sponsorship monies help to fund Rennie Grove’s unique care and support for local patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families, including the charity’s 24-hour responsive Hospice at Home service.

The charity’s own take on the famous national challenge gives locals of all ages and varied fitness levels the opportunity to walk the chalk and cast their eyes upon the breath-taking scenery of the Chilterns, taking in the peaks of Whiteleaf Cross, Coombe Hill and Ivinghoe Beacon, whilst raising vital funds to support its care.

The Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge offers a choice of a five, nine or 18 mile route. All routes can be completed at your own pace, allowing time to take in the stunning panoramic views that make up the Chilterns Ridgeway. All participants will take on the first two peaks, Coombe Hill and Whiteleaf Cross, by completing the five mile route from Princes Risborough to Wendover. Once completed,

walkers will be able to enjoy a well-deserved rest and refuel with a mouth-watering BBQ. The five mile entrants will then be able to head back to their cars via buses provided by Arriva, whilst the nine mile walkers press on to Tring by way of bus to complete the additional four miles and scale the third peak, Ivinghoe Beacon. For those who are feeling up for the challenge, the 18 mile route is taken on entirely by foot, including all three peaks, before catching the bus back to your car and off home for well earnt cups of tea or perhaps something slightly stronger!

A truly Turkish

EXPERIENCE

Having visited Turkey numerous times and enjoyed the local cuisine, our planned visit to ‘Little Istanbul’ in the heart of Little Chalfont conjured up lots of high expectations and mouth-watering thoughts. We were not disappointed!

A

mid-week visit and we found the restaurant was fairly quiet at 7pm with just a couple of tables in use. On entering, we were greeted with a warm welcome, and given an option of a couple of tables to choose our preferred spot. It was a super-hot evening, and the thought of eating cooped up inside was a little worrying however, the spacious and fully airconditioned venue was perfectly cooled. Within about half an hour the restaurant was buzzing as more guests arrived.

Once seated our waiter took our drinks order and talked us through some of the menu options. We agreed on a sample platter to share, filled with their recommendations.

We tied the Kalamar, delightful rings of calamari, marinated and coated in a light batter. We had the Sigara Boregi, a phyllo pastry filled with minced meat; the Muska Boregi which is the phyllo pastry filled with feta cheese, and of course, a must for all Turkish meals, the Hummus.

Moving on to mains, we again took their recommendations and tried the kebabs. With a selection of the Chicken Shish Kebab (marinated cubes of chicken barbecued on charcoal), and the Adana Kofte (spicy mined lamb again barbecued on charcoal) we struggled to think it could get any better.

Then came the pièce de résistance- the Lamb Shish Kebab

which was the absolute winner. Juicy and tender lamb had been marinated (the owner says he will not share his secret marinade with anyone), and barbecued on charcoal. This dish was absolutely divine, even though we were full we still had room for just a little more. This is what dining in Turkey is all about!

Now in theory we should really have moved on to desserts, and with their fine selection of traditional Turkish dishes it was really hard not to. We were too full! Choices included sweet pastry (Baklava), Kadayif (shredded dough, baked in the oven and soaked in syrup) and Rice Pudding (Sutlac) as well as cheesecake or ice cream there is a dessert for all pallets.

For those that know their Turkish Beer, Efes is on the menu. Turkish wines were also available.

If you are a lover of Turkish cuisine, or simply intrigued to find out what it is all about, you will not be disappointed with this little corner of Istanbul that is “Little Istanbul” situated in the heart of Little Chalfont.

The race is organised by the 3 Rotary Clubs of Marlow, including the new generation Marlow Bridge Club and promises to be more exciting than before, with additional entertainment for the spectators and improved facilities for the runners. This is the 12th year of this fabulous Marlow event and as always will start from Higginson Park under, the watchful eye of Sir Steve Redgrave and our own paralympian Naomi Riches who will lead the warm up before joining the race.

The lead charity for 2016 is Christmas for Kids (http:// www.christmasforkids.org.uk), who bring pantomimes to children’s hospices up and down the country. The money we raise will be concentrated on the local area ensuring that those with the most serious and life threatening illnesses can still have festive fun at Christmas in their place of care. A host of other - mainly local - charities will also benefit from this great event.

As last year our lead sponsor is Sytner BMW, who will be with us on the day. Last year we raised over £30,000 for charity and with the help of our runners collecting their own sponsorship, we aim to try and get as close to £40,000 as possible.

What started with just a few hundred runners has grown and is now a major event in the Marlow diary for participants and spectators alike. The 5 kilometre route starts and finishes in Higginson Park. The park or Marlow High Street are great places to watch the sea of colour go by. For all those who complete the course there is a celebratory bronze medal, just to say “Well done”.

Potential participants should sign up quickly and start raising sponsorship as early as possible. The website will go live on September 1st and anyone interested will need to book early to avoid disappointment, we were fully booked 4 weeks before the event last year.

LITERARY FESTIVAL Some of the UK’s most respected writers will be joined by top speakers from comedy, cookery, politics, music and more with over 150 events for adults and children at the 10th annual Henley Literary Festival

en Miller, Nadiya Hussain, David Essex, Sara Pascoe and Jeremy Paxman are among the names joining bestselling writers Val McDermid, Kate Summerscale, Robert Harris, Fay Weldon and Judith Kerr at the Henley Literary Festival in association with Baillie Gifford, which takes place at venues across Henley-on-Thames from September 26 to October 2. Over 40 events for children and families include BBC historian Lucy Worsley, One Show reporter Mike Dilger, Kipper and Maisy storytelliings, as well as special Harry Potter and Roald Dahl events.

BERKOFEST Berkofest, the boutique family-friendly music festival in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire returns for a fourth year this September with an incredible line up

Throughout the day there will be a range of tomfoolery for all the family to enjoy including drum workshops, face painting and Sandy Art. Top Chef Tom Kerridge announced as Patron of Local Charity

cclaimed celebrity chef, Tom Kerridge, from the two Michelin Star ‘Hand and Flowers’, Marlow, was been announced as a Patron of Scannappeal following a recent occasion where he cooked up the cash at his inaugural event in aid of the local charity.

Kerridge delighted 34 guests at a private dinner hosted by Scannappeal Chairman, William Baxter CBE, at the beautiful Stoke Park, to a delicious taste of the classic ‘Hand and Flowers’ menu. The evening raised over £22,000 which will help Scannappeal to fund cutting edge equipment to ensure Buckinghamshire hospitals provide the best possible care to their patients.

This is the first time that Tom Kerridge has taken on a formal position with a charity but when asked why he has become a Patron he said: “Scannappeal are a great charity doing so much in our community. They really are making a big difference to the diagnosis, treatment and care our local hospitals can deliver and I am delighted to be able to help”.

He went on to say: “Tonight was a fantastic evening and it was a privilege for me and my team to cook for such grateful guests and support Scannappeal on this very special evening”.

Patients with life-limiting illnesses at South Bucks Hospice are set to benefit from the skills of two computing students at a Buckinghamshire college

W

ill Mathew, 17, from Wendover and Charlie Steer, 16, who go to Bucks University Technical College (UTC) in Aylesbury, are helping to pilot a tele-healthcare revolution at the Hospice so patients can receive remote support.

The Hospice was given a donation last year of £2,700 by Buckinghamshire Freemasons which has allowed them to buy ten tablet computers and fund an ongoing programme of support over the internet.

Staff then set about creating a pilot project to make the most out of the donation and the technology.

Digital marketing company Framework Digital, which is supporting the Hospice, approached Bucks UTC with this ‘real’ project opportunity.

Tomas Pukalski, Director of Framework Digital, who is project managing, said: “Via some android tablets, we asked the UTC students if they could explore video conferencing technology, find an appropriate solution and enable these tablets, so that patients could receive advice and support remotely.”

The students, both from Aylesbury, recommended using Skype, a familiar and straightforward option. Having tested the technology they rolled out the idea, as well as providing instructions to patients on how to operate the equipment.

They also looked at alternative technologies which may be developed further in the future.

Jo Woolf, CEO at South Bucks Hospice, commented: “It is great to have young people engaged with this project.

They are helping to plan their own tomorrow. They exceeded all our expectations, taking the initiative and executing the idea really well.

Being able to offer our patients’ diverse services via a video call is hugely helpful for both patients and professionals, speeding up access and supporting independent living.”

She added: “These students understood the importance of data protection and making the process user friendly, and it has been an absolute pleasure to engage with them.”

Steve Smirthwaite, from the Bucks Masonic Centenary Fund, said: “We are delighted to help South Bucks Hospice with this important patient initiative and it is just one of the many and varied ways in which Freemasonry’s core values of friendship, integrity and charity are used to help benefit the whole community in Buckinghamshire.”

I

have taken inspiration for this month’s recipe from one of my most simple and fondest taste memories. It was whilst helping my brother down in Devon to construct his new house that my role as lunch chef resulted in us dashing off to the trout farm down the road to bring back a fair sized rainbow trout, which I cooked simply on his ageing barbecue. I added only a little olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper scavenged from his caravan next to his plot of

Barbecued Rainbow Trout with Orange and Thyme, Caper and Lime Dressing, Nasturtium Salad Serves 4

Ingredients 4 medium sized rainbow trout cleaned and gutted 2 large oranges (zested) 1 bunch picked thyme 150g soft butter ½ bunch dill finely chopped 50g capers ½ tsp Dijon mustard 4 tbsp olive oil 1½ tbsp white wine vinegar 1 bunch nasturtium leaves 1 bunch nasturtium flowers 1 round lettuce roughly torn salt and pepper Method: 1. Begin by lighting the barbecue, always allow about 1 ½ hours or until the embers turn 40 AUGUST 2016

The humble trout with a little love yields a very delicious fish option for those balmy summer barbecue evenings.

Once emulsified add the capers, dill and season 6. Unique new shooting competition ‘The Sunseeker Boodles Cup’ offers neverbefore-seen glittering prize fund

uxury brands Sunseeker London and Boodles have joined forces with The Royal Berkshire Shooting School to launch a spectacular clay shooting competition that will culminate in the overall winner choosing either a yacht charter for 8 guests courtesy of Sunseeker London or a piece of fine jewellery from Boodles, each worth approximately £80,000.

For a chance of winning one of these extraordinary prizes, entrants need to qualify for one of 20 places, then at the final, shoot 23 or more of the 25 birds. The overall winner can choose either a 7-day holiday aboard a fully catered and crewed Sunseeker yacht in the Cote d'Azur or an exquisite piece of Boodles jewellery. If no-one shoots 23 birds, then

the next highest scoring shooter will take home £5,000 courtesy of The Royal Berkshire Shooting School – the largest ever cash prize in a British clay shooting competition. In addition, the entrant scoring the highest out of 100 birds each week during the qualifiers will be invited to the final to shoot-off for a chance to win an exclusive, money-can’t-buy Ultimate Shoot Dinner for eight people hosted by wine writer Will Lyons worth £10,000 courtesy of Berry Bros. & Rudd.

The Sunseeker Boodles Cup will officially open on Saturday 1 October 2016 and run throughout the winter until Saturday 28 January 2017, giving entrants four months to qualify. Competitors are able to enter as many times as they wish. Entry costs just £50, which includes 50 warm-up birds plus two attempts at the sequence.

The Royal Berkshire Shooting School’s Managing Director Dylan Williams commented: “This world-class competition will appeal to both game and clay shooters. Designed to simulate high pheasants, the clay sequence has been devised by our very own Robert Cross, who is renowned for his skill in replicating the most challenging birds. The sequence is difficult – and once you add a good helping of pressure at the final it will certainly be challenging! Being able to keep a cool head and remembering foot work will be key to winning.”

When it comes to Interior Design – bedrooms do not get the attention they deserve as often it is seen as the simplest room in the house. However, Tobias Oliver Interiors understands the necessary ingredients to create a stunning bedroom suite.

I

n a recent project a client of Tobias Oliver Interiors required a scheme for a Guest Bedroom that would create a soothing sanctuary, indulging any potential guest staying for the night.

The first consideration should always be the spatial capability of the room, and how best to achieve the desired functionality. It is important to keep the flow of space around the bedroom as harmonious as possible, with close consideration of furniture proportions and scale. An upholstered, bespoke, full-height headboard produces a gentle feeling of grandeur. This is balanced with an endof-bed opening ottoman, creating a clever seating solution and provides always-needed extra storage, which is often forgotten.

The ‘window treatments’ consist of a luxurious padded pelmet and roman blind with contrasting central panel. The chosen fabrics are also used on the cushions of the bed and the border to the outline-quilted bedspread, continuing the scheme through the room. As this is a bedroom, the blinds have been lined and interlined, to make sure no daylight

passes through, for those who wish to sleep into their weekend mornings without being disturbed by the morning sun. Discretely hidden behind the roman blinds, is a simple yet very effective roller blind– this allows natural daylight to pass through when lowered, however keeping the required privacy.

Where possible, Tobias Oliver Interiors will suggest a wallpaper for a bedroom for the main purpose of making the room as ‘cosy’ as possible. If chosen carefully, these wall treatments will compliment any type of interior design and leave a lasting impression. In the case of this bedroom example, a design by Anya Larkin was chosen – a shagreen print with a soft iridescent finish.

Ceilings and woodwork are too often painted bright white. Whilst of course this is always a safe option, using an Interior Designer to select the perfect off-white can make a surprising difference to a design scheme. One of Tobias Oliver Interiors favourites is ‘Slipper Satin’. The name is taken from the delicate colour of the silk used in traditional ballet slippers. This was a perfect balance next to the sharkskin wallpaper and patterned headboard fabric, picking up the soft grey lustrous tones.

The room is finished with Italian blown-glass lamps, dove silk shades and dreamy accessories.
