FROM THE EDITOR

In this fascinating new exhibition at Discover Bucks Museum five visual artists explore the changing landscape of England from different perspectives.

Inspired by its history and imaginative power, the artists, Lian Chan, Ellie Laycock, Jane Peacock, Ellie Reid and Caroline Thomson, look at the land from a geological, historical, social and mythological point of view. With access to the Museum’s collections, the work that they have created specifically for this exhibition encompasses themes of storytelling, the ancient past, social conflict over land, the uncertain future of climate change and the emotional power of the land itself.

The 2024 Chiltern Arts Festival (10th–17th May) explores the theme of Human Stories, presenting musicians of the highest calibre alongside literary stars of today. Events take place in Henley-onThames (10th–11th May), the Risboroughs (12th–13th May), Hughenden (16th May) and Marlow (17th May).

The immersive opportunity of spending two full days in a single location offers a new kind of experience with Chiltern Arts — and the new ‘Festival Passes’ for each of these locations recognise that, offering 20% off tickets with a Henley or Risborough Pass.

Get ready to immerse yourself in a symphony of sound at the highly anticipated Hitchin Priory Summer Series, gracing Hertfordshire from August 29th to September 1st. This inaugural event promises a diverse and captivating lineup, curated to entertain music enthusiasts

of all ages and tastes, transforming the picturesque grounds of the historic Priory into a vibrant hub of melody and rhythm.

Launching the festivities with an explosion of energy on August 29th, the beloved British band Busted will ignite the stage with their infectious pop-punk anthems. From timeless classics like ‘What I Go To School For’ to the ever-popular

‘Year 3000’, Busted’s performance guarantees an evening of nostalgia and sing-along fun.

A newly unearthed 17th-century painting by the artist Guercino is he aded for public display for the first time at Waddesdon Manor. The painting, Moses, depicts the Old Testament figure in a “gesture of praise”, raising his head and hands to connect with God.

It will be revealed alongside four other Guercino paintings, which include King David, the Samian Sibyl, Libyan Sibyl and the Cumaean Sibyl with a Putto.

This is the first time all of these paintings have been together in one location since leaving the artist’s studio in 1651.

Crafted by the Italian painter between 1618 and 1619, Moses was in the possession of a 17th-century Roman Catholic cardinal and his descendants until the 1800s when its whereabouts became unknown.

The 2024 Chiltern Arts Festival (10th–17th May) explores the theme of Human Stories, presenting musicians of the highest calibre alongside literary stars of today. Events take place in Henley-on-Thames (10th–11th May), the Risboroughs (12th–13th May), Hughenden (16th May) and Marlow (17th May).

The immersive opportunity of spending two full days in a single location offers a new kind of experience with Chiltern Arts — and the new ‘Festival Passes’ for each of these locations recognise that, offering 20% off tickets with a Henley or Risborough Pass.

There’s so much on offer: join poet Roger McGough for Afternoon Tea afloat on the Thames; hear music by Bach, Debussy and Gershwin intertwined with poetry; and enjoy The Gesualdo Six’s programme of glorious a cappella music, followed by a performance of Fauré’s stunning and tranquil Requiem.

Experience Haydn, Mozart and Shostakovich’s string quartets (Brompton and Carducci String Quartets), along with composer’s letters, read in the case of Shostakovich by Game of Thrones star, Anton Lesser.

Three outstanding young ensembles perform hour-long concerts: a trumpet trio, a wind quintet and a Renaissance duo. James Runcie’s novel The Great Passion is lifted from the page as the author joins violinist Fenella Humphreys in concert and conversation. There’s even an opportunity to stretch your legs with a guided poetry walk starting at Whiteleaf Cross.

CHEF LAURIE GEAR April Recipe & Kitchen News

April is an exciting month in the kitchen with many different texture’s tastes and colours of ingredients readily available after the long winter. This month we focus on sea trout and whilst we think of brown trout as a river fish they can also be found at sea. All trout hatch in fresh water and some migrate to the sea and may live there for many years whilst others stay in fresh water, the predominantly female sea

trout return to the river to spawn.

For this recipe you can also substitute with brown or rainbow trout or even a good quality fresh salmon and in order to appreciate the true flavour of the trout, I have chosen to cook it en papillote (cooked in a paper wrapper). To accompany your fish asparagus fresh peas morel, mushrooms and nettle tips all fit the bill but can also be substituted with a similar favourite.

Artichoke

goes Wild! Exclusive Spring Wilderness Feast at Micklefield Hall, Sarratt

Wednesday 15th May 2024

RECIPE: SEA TROUT EN PAPILLOTE WITH ASPARAGUS, FRESH PEAS, NETTLES & MORELS

Ingredients

Serves 4

• 4 portions of sea trout fillet or brown or rainbow trout skin left on pin bones removed about 240 g a portion

• 12 English asparagus spears with the side spikes removed and root end snapped off where it naturally breaks between your fingers

• 12 clean, morel mushrooms

• A few handfuls of nettle tips (use gloves to pick) washed

• 100g fresh peas

• 300g chicken stock

• 300g fish or vegetable stock

• 200 ml white wine

• A small bunch spring onions cleaned and sliced thinly

• Juice of half a lemon

• Maldon salt

• 60g butter

• 4 squares of heavy duty, baking parchment

• 4 squares of aluminium foil

Method

1. Set a steamer up or a colander over simmering water. Lay the foil shiny side down place a paper square over the foil and lightly butter and sprinkle a little salt over.

2. Lay the trout fillets skin side down on the squares.

3. Divide the prepared vegetables over the trout portions Mix the stock, wine & lemon juice together and gently pour a generous splash over each followed by a small knob of butter and a little more salt.

4. Gentle fold upwards adding a little more liquid as you go.

5. Crimp the sides and top tightly together ensuring you create a pocket to allow internal steam to form.

6. At this stage you could refrigerate your parcels to cook later or cook immediately in the steamer lid on for around 12 to 15 minutes pending on the garnish size.

To Serve

Gently unwrap your parcels removed the trout, garnish and a little of the cooking liquid. And serve - for me with a generous spoonful of hollandaise sauce and a few of the first season Jersey Royal potatoes will eat extremely well with this dish - enjoy!

Rediscovered Guercino painting to go on public display for first time

Waddesdon Manor, until 27 October. By Jamel Smith

Anewly unearthed 17th-century painting by the artist Guercino is headed for public display for the first time at Waddesdon Manor.

It is thought the painting may have been relocated to France by art dealers, where it was rediscovered in 2022.

Pippa Shirley, the director of Waddesdon, said: “We are so excited to be able to display this group of paintings in a first for Guercino at Waddesdon, and to put a new acquisition on display also for the first time.

“The arrival of Moses felt irresistible because it appeared just as we were planning this exhibition, with the great painting of King David at its heart.

“Bringing the two together with the group of sibyls creates an incredibly rich context of contrast and comparison, allowing us an insight into the arc of Guercino’s extraordinary career.”

Born in 1591, Guercino was among the most sought-after Italian painters of his era, enjoying a successful career producing hundreds of artworks under the patronage of popes, foreign courts, and dukes.

He was renowned for his baroque painting style, characterised by dramatic compositions, intense emotions, rich colours, and intricate details.

“The sibyls in particular are emblematic of his work, as he returned to the subject of these mysterious and powerful female seers again and again,” Ms Shirley said.

“I hope that they will create the same fascination for our visitors.

“Because the way in which all of these paintings embody ideas of faith and foresight, power and prophesy and how the past relates to the future is as relevant to us now as it was in the uncertain 17th-century world.

“We are immensely grateful to the National Gallery and His Majesty the King and the Royal Collection for so generously enabling this potent encounter.”

Moses and the four other paintings will be publicly displayed at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire, until 27 October.

Elevate Your Taste Experience

Silent Pool Gin is a luxury handcrafted spirit which captures the very essence of the Silent Pool and the surrounding Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty where the distillery is located. In celebration of their Surrey Hills home the distillers were inspired by local florals in the recipe development process. From chamomile and elderflower that grows in abundance around the Silent Pool to the roses and lavender in their local village, the use of aromatic florals is a key element of the blend. The florals are combined with many classic gin botanicals including juniper, of course, to deliver perfectly balanced citrus, herbal and spice layers of aroma and flavour.

In fact, did you know that 80% of our taste experience is derived from aroma? This rich, clean, juniper-driven London Dry gin is crafted in special way to deliver enhanced layers of aroma with complex heart, head and base notes. This stunning aroma is one of the reasons why Silent Pool Gin delivers an enhanced taste experience. The clever distillers at Silent Pool were further inspired to create a brand-new way to serve a classic gin and tonic which enhances aroma even further. Traditionally a G&T garnish will involve cutting a lemon, lime or orange wedge to spritz and place in the glass. The garnish delivers the

initial aroma you encounter in your drink, and therefore plays a critical role in defining the taste experience so they wanted to enhance this aspect of aroma significantly compared to citrus slice alone. The result of their considerable research and development was a revolutionary approach to create an intensely aromatic liquid garnish to mist across the top of your drink which works in perfect harmony with the 24 botanicals intricately layered in Silent Pool Gin.

The little bottle of liquid garnish looks like a small perfume bottle and delivers exquisite aroma as you place the glass to your lips, which in turn delivers enhanced taste. With the atomiser, spray the liquid garnish twice across the top of your glass to create a long-lasting aromatic mist. With 120 sprays per bottle, you can create 60 serves, everything from cocktails such as martinis to your best ever Gin and Tonic. The Bergamot Orange liquid garnish delivers rich and floral notes with bright citrus undertones which perfectly complement Silent Pool Gin botanicals. This innovation can replace the need for fruit garnish effectively reducing food waste as well as delivering an elevated taste experience.

Planning for your future when you’re in a blended family

Step or blended families are one of the fastest growing family types in the UK. It’s important to think about the future should you or your partner die and how you can best provide for your surviving partner, children and any step-children. B P Collins’ wills, trusts and probate team advises on the options available to ensure your assets are left to your loved ones.

Make a Will

Making a Will ensures that your assets pass to beneficiaries whom you have chosen, rather than the intestacy rules applying. They can be updated at any time.

Joint tenants or tenants in common

If you and your partner own your property as ‘Joint Tenants’, then on your death, your partner will automatically receive your share of the property. However, if you have children from a previous relationship, you may not wish for this to happen. Another option is to become ‘Tenants in Common’ and to have a Declaration of Trust setting out the proportions of the property that you each own, which can be passed on to your own children instead of it automatically passing to your partner on your death.  Your share of the property could reflect how much money each of you has contributed to the purchase of the house.

Life interest trust

In your Will, you can specify that after you pass away, your partner can remain in the property for the rest of their life or until another point (for example, until they remarry) and on their death, the trust would end and your share of the property would be left to the beneficiaries named in your Will.

The same principle applies if you have a rental property and you wish for the income to pass to your surviving spouse or civil partner for a fixed period of time after death. This would give the surviving partner time to find their feet and after that period, your share of the property could pass to your children.

Inheritance tax implications

It is important to remember that there are inheritance tax implications for setting up these types of trusts, which specialists can advise on. But, generally speaking, if one person leaves their interest in the property (which has a value of over £325,000) entirely to a partner (if you are not married), there would be inheritance tax implications. If, however, the decision is made to leave the share of the property to direct descendants, such as children or grandchildren), the residence nil-rate band (RNRB) applies, which will result in an additional tax-free allowance of £175,000, depending on the size of your estate.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

Many people are thinking more than ever before about choosing an attorney whom they trust, should they lose capacity. Lasting Powers of Attorney enable financial and health and welfare decisions to be made on your behalf should you no longer be able to do so. You could consider appointing your partner and children as your attorneys so that people will be able to manage your personal affairs for you if you are unable to do so.

21 – 25 May 2024

The greatest flower show on earth returns to Royal Hospital Chelsea with stunning garden designs, gorgeous floral displays and exclusive shopping. Over a century old, and RHS Chelsea still delivers new ideas in horticulture – drawing a global crowd and is the ‘haute-couture’ of the international gardening scene.

RHS has revealed the sensational garden line-up for 2024, representing the pinnacle of horticultural excellence with cutting-edge design, inspiration, colour and innovation. Expect to be dazzled!

2024 SHOW GARDENS INCLUDE:

•St James’s Piccadilly: Imagine the World to be Different - designed by Robert Myers, built by Stewart Landscape Construction. Paying homage to the revitalising influence of urban green spaces, the garden symbolises a message of hope and recovery while igniting the imagination of future

generations to envision a different world. Upon entering through an archway reminiscent of the proposed gateways leading to the churchyard at St James’s Piccadilly, this tranquil space serves as a sanctuary for urban dwellers and city wildlife.

•WaterAid Garden - designed by Tom Massey & Je Ahn, built by Landscape Associates. The garden explores the challenges presented by an ever-changing climate. It focuses on sustainable water management and features a colourful array of plant species designed to deal with varying amounts of rainfall. The structure harvests every drop of rainfall, filtering and storing this precious resource for drinking and irrigating while also slowing flow and providing shade.

•The National Autistic Society Gardendesigned by Sophie Parmenter & Dido Milne, built by Landform Consultants. The Garden aims to capture an autistic person’s everyday experience of the world, using walls of cork to create spaces dedicated to different types of social interaction -at work, with friends and family, with partners, and with ourselves - highlighting a strategy called ‘masking’ – a potentially draining process involving consciously or unconsciously hiding autistic characteristics in order to fit in.

SANCTUARY GARDENS INCLUDE:

•The Boodles Garden - designed by Catherine MacDonald, built by Gadd Brothers Trees & Landscapers. The Boodles Garden is a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the National Gallery. Taking inspiration from paintings at the gallery, it evokes the spirit of many significant artworks. Subtle links to prominent paintings at the gallery will pervade the garden’s design and planting, providing visitors a visual treat where nature represents art, and vice versa.

•The Freedom from Torture Garden: A Sanctuary for Survivors - designed by John Warland & Emma O’Connell, built by Living Landscapes. A place of sanctuary, peace and hope where horticultural therapy calms, heals and restores survivors of torture on their journey to recovery. The garden is designed to be a curvaceous and immersive space, where visitors can engage in therapy one-to-one, with family, or in a group. The communal bread oven brings survivors together to share stories and build new friendships.

THE GREAT PAVILION

A fresh floral feast! An oasis of colour and scents with some of the world’s finest growers and nurseries exhibiting impressive displays and offering expert advice. Nothing compares to being surrounded by the colour and fragrance in the Pavilion - a truly unique experience. The Discovery Zone is home to educational exhibits promoting the latest discoveries in horticultural science. Visitors can explore inspiring displays, many of which champion the benefits of gardening and it can combat climate change or improve mental wellbeing.

Finding the Balance in Boarding

As a traditional prep school with a strong boarding heritage, making the decision to remove compulsory boarding at Years 7 and 8 was a big one.

One of the advantages of being a small school, is that we can easily seek feedback from our stakeholders. What we were hearing from prospective parents who chose not to send their sons to Caldicott was that they weren’t ready to commit their son to weekly boarding a few years down the line. What we were hearing from some current parents was that their sons weren’t settling into boarding as quickly as they’d hoped. We’re happy to say that since the announcement, the majority of feedback we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive.

We are undeniably advocates of boarding; we regularly hear how impressively quickly Caldicott boys settle into life at Harrow, Eton and the wide range of other senior schools that our boys progress to. Obviously, this is thanks to the work

“We’ll still be encouraging parents to choose boarding for their sons, but it will be their decision to make as a family (made easier by the option of flexi boarding from Year 3”

of many teachers over several years at Caldicott, but one key part is the precisely designed path that starts in Years 3 and 4 and finishes in Year 8, when boys leave with two years of boarding under their belts. For this reason, we’ll still be encouraging parents to choose boarding for their sons, but it will be their decision to make as a family (made easier by the option of flexi boarding from Year 3).

‘Day Plus’ is the name of our new offering for Years 7 and 8. It includes two nights of optional boarding a week, which can be easily added to; despite these nights not being compulsory, they allow boys to still take part in our very popular evening activities programme. Our Day Plus offering is best described as striking a balance between ensuring boys are enriched and prepared in all the ways that we’re known for, yet it also allows flexibility for the individualised needs of each child.

Our relationship with top boarding senior schools is well documented, but our strong relationship with many 13+ day schools is less widely known. Our Deputy Head (Academic), Ma’am Naidoo, regularly attends meetings and events at lots of day schools such as Merchant Taylors, St Paul’s, Westminster, and is thoroughly familiar with the application process to these schools.

To dig a little deeper, come to one of our open mornings. Book now at: www.caldicott.com/welcome-to-caldicott.

Creating your future

Thorpe House School launch brand new Co-Educational Sixth Form opening in September 2024.

In exciting year of celebration, change and development has begun at our local Independent School, Thorpe House in the heart of Gerrards Cross. Whilst September sees a Centenary Gala to celebrate the school’s 100th year, there will be the addition of a co-educational Sixth Form offering young men and women first class teaching with an emphasis on academic achievement, the development of key life skills, leadership and exploration, extended pastoral care, and bespoke university and careers guidance.

Whilst this is a new provision opening in September 2024, Thorpe House has a long tradition of excellence in challenging and supporting each individual student to develop their unique talents and passions; and to go on to achieve success in their chosen field.

It’s your choice. It’s our expertise.

Our pioneering curriculum is shaped each year around you, allowing you to delve deeper into the subjects that truly captivate your mind and align with your future goals.

Not only will Thorpe’s new Sixth Form be based in an iconic building on Gerrards Cross High Street, freshly refurbished to provide outstanding connectivity, technology, teaching resources, study facility and great aesthetics, the Sixth Form will also welcome girls for the first time in the school’s 100 year history. This provides a wonderful new opportunity for the town, and its first students to be the pioneers of the new provision, and set that high standard for the generations to come.

It’s your time. It’s our commitment. Thorpe and its Headteacher Mr Jake Burnett, are keen to highlight that in setting up the new Sixth Form, the focus will be on providing the very best opportunities for each of our individual students, which will mean an outstanding Sixth Form for all, including for the local community.  The key will be around tailoring a bespoke curriculum that meets the needs of students, so that aspiration can be enhanced, horizons broadened, achievements successfully accomplished, and futures realised. He added, “We will make sure that we provide the pioneering curriculum, life skills, pastoral care and university and career guidance that every one of our children deserves, so that they can take the lead and explore their interests with curiosity. Our Sixth Formers will be challenged and supported to blaze their trail, with the freedom to innovate and grow confidently.”

56 APRIL 2024 EDUCATION

It’s your life. It’s our experiences. Enrichment opportunities abound as we provide you with the freedom and experiences to extend your learning, develop key life skills and explore your interests with curiosity and confidence.

It’s your future. It’s our guidance.

Advice and guidance on career opportunities, and next steps including universities, apprenticeships, applications and UCAS, will be targeted around the needs of the individual students over the two years in Thorpe House Sixth Form. There will be a number of opportunities over the next few months for students, parents and the local community to find out more about this exciting Sixth Form. The recently appointed Head of Sixth Form, Mr Simon McCallion, commented that there will be myriad opportunities to find out, “Whether through our Sixth Form Open Evening, our Social Media presence or through other opportunities, there will be lots of ways to find out more about this unique and local offer of excellence in Thorpe House Sixth Form.” He was keen to add that he is most excited to meet the future students and tailor that 16-18 provision around them, “I am really looking forward to getting to discussing with current Year 10s and 11s about what they would need in this Sixth Form; to say to them, ‘It’s your life, your future, and your choice! It’s your time!’ I am confident that when our new students make that choice, it will be Thorpe House Sixth Form, for the full range of provision, and exciting opportunities we will offer.”

Mr Burnett and Mr McCallion highlighted that this Sixth Form will be very much part of the local community. With the Sixth Form site a ten minute walk from the Oval Way main buildings, Thorpe’s Sixth Formers will be visible on the High Street and engaging with local businesses, charities and wider

community. Having been such a presence in the town for a century, this new dimension to Thorpe will provide the platform for great achievements for the school in the town and for Gerrards Cross for the next century!

Thus, whether you, or someone you know is thinking about the best place to further their study at A-Levels, whatever future and aspiration awaits:- entrepreneur, scientist, performer, mathematician, public speaker, sporting champion or Duke of Edinburgh Gold candidate, have a look at what Gerrards Cross’s local independent school has to offer.

It’s your voice. It’s our belief.

We believe you play an important part in the running of the Sixth Form and are integral to helping it grow. We encourage you to take the lead and have a voice - in doing so you will develop leadership skills and qualities that will serve you well in the future.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Thorpe House Sixth Form CO-EDUCATIONAL Launching
2024

Berkhamsted Sixth Form Centre

“The world outside schools is changing fast,” says Richard Backhouse, Principal of Berkhamsted School, and he is right. School leavers are entering a swift-moving world which places new and shifting demands upon them, and it is with this in mind that Berkhamsted is constructing a brand-new Sixth Form Centre for completion in 2024.

The new building will be a world-class education site for Berkhamsted pupils aged 16 – 18, helping prepare them for, as Backhouse puts it, “the world as it is now, and the world as we see it developing”. Wherever Berkhamsted leavers go next, the new Sixth Form Centre will help them to develop the skills and experience to navigate those worlds. The building will feature a range of innovative design features that will enable an exciting array of new educational approaches to take place.

A large café space will allow students to meet tutors or other members of staff for one-to-one sessions and catchups. It will also provide a space for students to socialise and collaborate, allowing for a more adult feel to their studies, designed to feel like a transitional phase between school and university. In addition, a meadow quad – a deviation from the lush, manicured lawns usually associated with school quads – will provide another area for students to socialise and relax.

Collaboration and a more adult feel to studying and socialising are at the heart of these designs and this will be the case in the building’s classrooms too. Classroom design will allow Berkhamsted to really innovate in how students are taught and how they learn. Design has been configured around the Harkness Model, an idea developed in America which sees classes sit around a large boardroom-style table, allowing them to engage in a more discursive approach to learning which may mirror the kind of learning

students might expect in a university seminar.

The Sixth Form Centre’s Future Zone will be an area where learning of a different kind will take place. As well as containing the university and careers advice that the school already has, the Future Zone will also contain a working space for young entrepreneurs, enabling students who may already be running or thinking of developing their own business in the future a space in which to do this. Berkhamsted are aware that students may wish to go straight into employment or start their own businesses – that is if they have not already started them while at school.

As well as providing spaces and opportunities for innovative teaching, learning, and pupil development, the new Sixth Form building has also been constructed with sustainability at its heart. Designed with low carbon, energy efficiency, resource efficiency and a circular economy approach in mind, the new building will set a blueprint for all future developments at Berkhamsted. Air source heat pumps, an array of solar panels and the biodiverse meadow quad are just some of the sustainability highlights.

Whether it is through the innovative teaching and learning methods that it will allow to take place, the sense of community it will foster, or the feel of a university or workplace-style environment, Berkhamsted’s Sixth Form Centre will play an important role in developing the students who pass through its doors. Berkhamsted pupils will be well equipped to face and thrive within the fast-changing world.

Preparing Pupils for the Real World

Bridging the gap between school and the real world is often overlooked. Education should prepare learners for life beyond school. The Beacon in Amersham focusses on cultivating lifelong skills to equip pupils for the future.

In many schools, children are only introduced to wider life lessons and skills from secondary school. However, The Beacon; an independent school for boys aged 3-13, implements a crosscurricular approach to develop vital life skills and instil a love for learning.

Lessons are taught by specialist teachers and the curriculum is underpinned by the Pre-Senior Baccalaureate (PSB) founded at The Beacon in 2007 to replace Common Entrance. By championing development of the PSB’s Core Skills, pupils thrive and become resilient in all aspects of life. These six core skills are Communication, Reviewing and Improving, Thinking and Learning, Collaboration, Leadership and Independence.

team-building activities, careers and prospective jobs for the future. It includes BeaconTalks, where former Beacon boys are welcomed back to give pupils insight into their experience at Senior Schools, tips on the application process and how to be prepared for future schools.

Boys in Years 7 and 8 learn about essential economic concepts to develop a foundation for financial responsibility. Understanding this at an early age equips them with the knowledge to make informed financial decisions in the future.

The Shining Future Programme is a dedicated learning programme, which is tailored to individuals enabling boys to fulfil their academic potential, gain greater independence, build confidence and ultimately develop lifelong skills to shine into the future.

In 2023, as part of the Shining Future Programme, The Beacon launched an ‘Upper School Enrichment’ initiative; a comprehensive and informative introduction to essential topics outside of the curriculum, specifically tailored for boys in Years 7 and 8, completed during tutor time.

It delivers workshops around the topics of personal finance, Women’s History Month, current affairs,

They have been introduced to the dynamics of investing, savings, bonds, and ISAs, learning the importance of long-term financial planning. The initiative addresses practical aspects of managing money, all presented by knowledgeable staff members.

Younger boys are also introduced to the enrichment initiative, taking on tasks such as setting a weekly shopping budget, comparing different supermarket food prices and completing an online shop.

The Beacon strives to ensure that boys are given the opportunity to develop the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of the modern world, fostering independence and security in their adult lives. This is the future of education.

Key differences between retirement and care homes

Choosing the right living arrangement for yourself or a loved one in later years can be a significant decision, often marked by careful consideration of various options available. Among these options, retirement homes and care homes stand out as popular choices, each catering to different needs and preferences. Understanding the differences between the two is crucial for making an informed decision that aligns with individual circumstances and requirements.

Shabina Hussain, Partner at Blaser Mills Law, outlines the key differences.

Retirement homes

Retirement homes, also known as independent living communities, are designed for retirees who are relatively independent and do not require round-the-clock medical care or assistance with daily activities. These communities offer residents the opportunity to maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle while enjoying the benefits of communal living. Typically, retirement homes provide amenities such as entertainment, social activities, dining options, and various supportive services like housekeeping and transportation.

Residents in retirement homes typically live in private apartments or bungalows within the community, retaining a sense of autonomy and privacy while also having access to onsite amenities and social opportunities. The focus of retirement homes is on promoting a vibrant and engaging lifestyle for seniors who value independence and community interaction.

Care homes

In contrast, care homes, also known as assisted living facilities or nursing homes, are intended for those who require assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) or have complex medical needs that call for ongoing supervision and support. Care

homes provide a higher level of care and assistance, including help with bathing, dressing, medication management, meal preparation, and mobility assistance.

Care homes employ trained staff members, including nurses and caregivers, who are available around the clock to attend to residents’ needs and provide medical assistance as required.

Key differences

The primary distinction between retirement homes and care homes lies in the level of care and support provided to residents. Retirement homes stress independence, autonomy, and a vibrant social environment, catering to those who are capable of managing their daily routines with minimal assistance.

In contrast, care homes prioritise healthcare and assistance with activities of daily living, making them suitable for those individuals with more significant care needs or medical conditions requiring ongoing supervision.

Doctor Now Tailored Health Screening

Be proactive and understand your health risks

Prioritising and improving our health are at the forefront of public consciousness in the post-pandemic world and with an increased awareness of the fragility of our health, individuals are now more than ever committed to finding a balance between their personal health, family duties and professional commitments.

Doctor Now’s bespoke health screening services deliver customised insights that cater to the unique demands of our bodies and lifestyles, ensuring that health maintenance is not just a routine task, but a personalised journey towards well-being.

“Doctor Now’s bespoke health screening services deliver customised insights that cater to the unique demands of our bodies and lifestyles”

Personalisation & early detection

By incorporating advanced, customised screening modules, Doctor Now considers an individual’s health profile, providing a detailed analysis that is unique and personalised. This allows the screening doctor to consider current medical conditions and identify potential future health risks along with family health history risk factors, as well as consider lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, stress levels, alcohol consumption and sleep patterns.

By tailoring screening processes to an individual’s unique characteristics, The Doctor Now team can

74 APRIL 2024 FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY

offer more targeted advice and interventions at an early stage. This personalised approach enhances the accuracy of diagnoses and promotes proactive health management, leading to better outcomes for patients.

Early detection of health risks

Early detection is vital in preventing the progression of diseases, and tailored screening empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health. Catching conditions in their infancy enables more effective and less invasive treatment options at a later stage, ultimately improving the chances of successful outcomes.

Cost-effective & peace of mind

Whilst health screening will involve an initial investment, it proves to be cost-effective in the long run. By identifying health risks early on, individuals can avoid more extensive and expensive treatments that may be required if conditions are left undetected. Personalised health screenings guide individuals in making lifestyle choices that can prevent the onset of diseases. The proactive nature of tailored health screening promotes a culture of preventive care, ultimately leading to better health outcomes and lower healthcare costs.

Empowering informed decision-making

Empowerment extends beyond the individual and enables Doctor Now’s clinical team to collaborate with patients and specialists to create a personalised and effective health plan. Informed decision-making strengthens the patient-doctor relationship, ensuring a collaborative approach to healthcare that is centred around the individual’s well-being.

Better Mental Well-being

The holistic nature of Doctor Now’s tailored advanced health screening modules considers not only physical health but also factors in mental and emotional well-being. Understanding how lifestyle choices and environmental factors impact mental health allows for a more comprehensive approach to wellness.

The knowledge gained from personalised health screenings can alleviate anxiety and uncertainty. Individuals can proactively address potential health concerns, leading to a sense of control and peace of mind. The psychological benefits of knowing one’s health status and taking proactive steps toward wellbeing should not be underestimated.

Why now?

Doctor Now’s tailored and advanced health screening represents a paradigm shift in moving away from one-size-fits-all approaches to personalised, precision medicine. The benefits of early detection, informed decision-making, and enhanced wellbeing make it a transformative tool in promoting preventative health to individuals, family and friends, work colleagues and the wider community.

As we navigate the complexities of modern life, investing in health screening is an investment in our most valuable asset – our health. Embracing this approach empowers individuals to take charge of their well-being and ultimately contributes to a healthier and happier life.

Wearable Works Of Art

India, England, Italy. It reads like a bucket list but in fact, this is the origin story of emerging brand, Shaku. Based in London, Shaku charts an extraordinary story of craftsmanship and skill through the eyes of founder and designer, Shakera Tayub.

Born in Mumbai, India, Shakera, her nickname was ‘Shaku’, comes from a long line of skilled tailors and needlewomen, where embroidery and dressmaking were not just passions but indispensable livelihoods. Supporting her mother and aunt, young Shakera would visit the dazzling textile markets and learn how to differentiate quality and skill in materials, dyes, and craft. Surrounded by colour, each shade of tulle, pigment and spice informed a growing palette of rich vibrant colour that echoes today through every Shaku design.

form the basis of her collection of luxury scarves, quite literally wearable works of art. Pairing such exquisite design with exquisite craftsmanship and materials was not just necessary, but the only way for Shakera to stay true to her personal values of conscious quality and respect for her art.

Sent to England when just 19, Shakera discovered the beauty of the verdant hills and meadows littered with wildflowers sparkling in the sun. From curly tipped peonies and gloriously vibrant dahlias in her garden, to lavender bushes buzzing with bees in peak summer, a glorious inspiration was at her fingertips. Notebook in hand, Shakera recreated this lush idyll in pencil, pen and paint.

Bold and beautiful, Shakera’s drawings bring the opulent colours of the exotic Indian peninsular in intricately detailed floral masterpieces. Such designs

In northern Italy, Shakera discovered the exceptional craftsmanship she yearned for to help bring her art to life. Within seconds of meeting, it was clear that Shakera’s knowledge and love of craft had found a home. Renowned for the silk craft, and centuries old print and weaving traditions, a prestigious manufacturer from the ‘City of Silk’ Como helps Shakera pair her designs with their perfect match. Perhaps the most remarkable element of this all is that a manufacturer who only works with the most luxurious fashion houses found in Shakera, the belief that her design and her know-how was worthy of their skill and time.

Each scarf is a testament to Shakera’s story and her love for design and craftsmanship. Shaku takes the scarf on this journey to create a truly luxurious accessory; an integration of the different, an act that should be treasured.

Royal Ascot Lookbook’

Royal Ascot unveils its first ‘Lookbook’ under new creative director Daniel Fletcher. The fashion designer made history as Royal Ascot’s first ever creative director in its 300+ year history. By Rikki Loftus,

Royal Ascot has unveiled its first Lookbook under fashion designer Daniel Fletcher – the British racing institution’s first ever creative director in more than 300 years.

While still highlighting tailoring, British designer Fletcher – who first rose to fame after dressing Harry Styles – has applied his signature, bold aesthetic to the annual Lookbook. It’s set to help racegoers be inventive in how they source their outfits, to create an inspired look that’s authentic

to their personal style.

Ascot is an important fixture in the fashion stakes – with notable attendees of the prestigious event including King Charles and Queen Camilla. Fletcher has produced five consolidated edits that showcase a range of looks appropriate across all enclosure dress codes.

These include a ‘New Guard’ category, which showcases clothing from independent designers and rising stars in the UK, and ‘The Conscious Edit’, which takes a more sustainable approach

and includes pieces from Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood.

In 2022, Royal Ascot relaxed their famously strict dress code for the first time due to soaring temperatures, with racegoers being allowed to remove their jackets and ties.

Now, Fletcher is adding an exciting new edge to the event’s style focus.

“This season, I wanted to bring a fresh take on fashion at the races and the magical world of occasion dressing,” said London-based Fletcher, 33.

“Inspiration came from my lifelong fascination with British heritage, and the stylish characters one might find at the racecourse this summer and beyond, whilst also paying homage to the array of styles able to be showcased across each enclosure, as well as my favourite Royal Ascot looks throughout the decades that I discovered during my research delving through the pictorial archives.

“This includes my signature style of building an outfit based on neutrals and my love of tailoring, which I’ve then juxtaposed with more playful maximalist looks that highlight a sense of British sartorial elegance and the glamour of Royal Ascot.

“Be it flamboyant or understated, Royal Ascot gives us the chance to embrace the famous dress codes and dress up, encouraging freedom of

expression through dressing. For 2024, I want to capture that joy and inspire racegoers to push the boundaries with their own unique style, and to embrace their own creativity.”

Originally from the North West of England, Fletcher launched his eponymous menswear label, DANIEL w. FLETCHER in 2015, after graduating from Central Saint Martins and gaining experience with fashion giants including Louis Vuitton, Lanvin and JW Anderson. He soon started getting noticed, especially after Harry Styles began wearing his clothes.

In 2020, he took part in Netflix’s Next In Fashion series, which saw him make it to the final.

Now leading the style helm for Royal Ascot, Alexandra Bertram, brand and creative lead for Ascot Racecourse, said of Fletcher’s first Lookbook edits: “From quintessentially ‘Royal Ascot’ looks that embody our sartorial heritage, through to the playful elegance of vintage dressing and relaxed formalwear, there’s a look that speaks to every style generation across every enclosure.”

At its core, dopamine decor is inspired by dopamine, the ‘feel-good’ chemical responsible for pleasure and reward. Integrating its influence into interiors taps into human psychology, and has led to the current boom in interiors created to amplify happiness.

So what does dopamine décor actually look like? There’s adventurous colour, there’s tempting texture, there’s alluring lighting, there’s unusual shape,

“There’s adventurous colour, there’s tempting texture, there’s alluring lighting, there’s unusual shape, but most of all there’s variation”

but most of all there’s variation. What makes us happy is so innately personal, that no two dopamine-dosed rooms will ever look the same. It could be a space full of mismatching furniture, a single powerful statement piece amongst the calm, an unpredicted combination of colours, texture where before there was smooth, moments of design that ignite surprise or a proudly showcased personal collection of objects. It’s design meeting emotion in the most playful and unrestricted way.

LIBERATION FROM LIMITATION

Juxtaposition and contrast are key. ‘Clashing’?

Throw that word out of the window and embrace eclecticism. Sure, not everything that brings you visual bliss coordinates with each other, but so what? The point is it’s beautiful to you, and it’s your home after all – forget about how the rule book says it should look and hone in on how you feel, not how you think you’re meant to feel. Get that dopamine going, decorate with abandon and design a space that’s all the more unique, vibrant and authentic for it.

Identify items that evoke a burst of positivity when you see them. Treat these as the centre of your space, and build up around them, working them into an existing set up – there’s no need to completely redecorate, using a single or few pieces of furniture, lighting, rugs or accessories can be

94 APRIL 2024 HOUSE & GARDEN

just as cheerful and effective as creating a whole new look.

YOU DO YOU

The essence of the dopamine decor trend lies in selecting furniture and accents that genuinely bring you joy and reflect you as a person, so each object or aesthetic is imbued with meaning as well as beauty. Spaces should deeply resonate with you, prompting a surge of pleasure, contentment or sheer delight and moving past the way they look on a surface level to forge a connection with the sentiments. Rooms set ups can take inspiration from childhood, objects, art, a treasured collection, fashion, travel or a memory – dig deep into yourself.

LEVEL UP THE JOY FACTOR

Nothing is off the table – your personality is centre stage, and the furniture and objects you surround yourself with should bring a smile at every turn. Perhaps they evoke a joy-filled memory, or perhaps they stir up an emotion, or perhaps their sheer beauty gets your heart beating. Dopamine decorating is not about being subtle –now’s the moment to be daring and introduce any objects, colours or themes that ignite passion and awaken the senses. Don’t hesitate – put it on display in its full glory and cheerful splendour.

BRING ON THE BRILLIANCE

For many of us, colour plays a dominant role in decorating for that hit of happiness. From a rainbow explosion in one space to a gentle smattering of calmer shades, either one colour or a combination of many tends to strike a chord with us on a deep level (that sometimes we

“Nothing is off the table –your personality is centre stage, and the furniture and objects you surround yourself with should bring a smile at every turn”

can’t even explain). As dopamine décor gathers momentum, bright, cheering hues are on the up, with kaleidoscopic spaces filled with vivid, often contrasting colours filling homes with optimism and good vibes. An easy way to get involved? Choose objects individually rather than trying to make sure they all ‘work’ together – don’t worry about that – and organically layer shapes, forms, colours, patterns, or materials to grab attention and lift the spirits, or simply go a bit bolder with the colours you’re naturally drawn to.

BEYOND BRIGHTS

While dopamine’d homes are the antithesis of quiet neutrality, that’s not to say calming, colourless spaces can’t get involved, and if you’re not an every-colour-all-in-one-space type of person, that’s great too. It’s about what brings personal satisfaction. A dash of pigment, texture or interesting material here and there can be just as effective as a space drenched in colours if it rouses your senses. While vibrant, elaborate, high contrast designs often define this style, a minimalist approach can also classify as dopamine decor if it creates a glow of wellbeing and a jolt of joy. chaplins.co.uk

Stylish Kitchens for Period Homes

Simon Taylor explains how to achieve the right balance between modern and traditional

Many of the bespoke traditional kitchens that we design, make and install are in beautiful period homes. Ranging from listed manor houses to rural barn conversions, we have spent almost four decades working with clients to create modern functional kitchens in styles that are always sympathetic to the fabric and architecture of their properties.

Striking the right balance between designing a functional kitchen for 21st century living, whilst working in a building that may be hundreds of years old requires technical expertise, particularly if additional renovation works are required.

Ensuring that the structure of the property is respected, that any electrical and plumbing installations are handled safely and within building regulations, are all aspects that require specialist knowledge. At Simon Taylor Furniture, we have the right experience to help you with your kitchen renovation from the design all the way through to the installation. If you have beautiful structural beams, or exposed brickwork, we can incorporate these original features within the design, adding accents within the new kitchen to enhance them.

Our team of experts will ask lots of questions about who lives in the property and your lifestyle, and, working to your requirements, we will design the ideal bespoke kitchen for you in your period home. We will make recommendations about storage, worktops, appliances, sinks and taps. We will recommend seating elements, from bar stools at the kitchen island or peninsula, to banquette seating for a larger dining area.

All furniture is made at our cabinet workshop in Bierton, Buckinghamshire, which is also the location of our showroom, sample and presentation room. With a project manager to oversee your kitchen renovation from start to finish, our liveried installation team will both remove the old kitchen and fit your new one.

AWARD-WINNING DESIGN AND INSTALLATION

The power of local knowledge

When it comes to architecture and build projects, there are few attributes more valuable than a deep understanding of the local area and its planning requirements.

It’s something that Jane Duncan Architects + Interiors has built up over three decades, enabling every step of a project to be smoother and less stressful. With an extensive network of contractors and suppliers, many of whom have been working with the firm since it was founded by Jane Duncan in 1992, clients will benefit from the strength of longstanding relationships.

Preparation is key

Based in Little Chalfont and with projects around Amersham, Chesham, Chorleywood, Berkhamsted and Beaconsfield, JDA+I has extensive experience with local planners. ‘We’ve been putting in applications for over 30 years and try to anticipate the issues that may come up before submitting,’ says Julie Parkinson, director at Jane Duncan Interiors, which she set up in 2004 and which runs alongside the architecture firm. ‘In the past we’ve been stalled by problems with bat populations and protected trees so we always make sure that the relevant reports have been done,’ Julie says. Jonathan Dale, who leads the architecture firm and has been with the company for over 24 years, adds, ‘We have a design passion for the old and the new, sometimes combining them both. We strive to build upon

“With every local advantage set in their favour, JDA+I is reaping the rewards of three decades of expertise, dedication and professionalism”

a knowledge and understanding of the local area and its history. The vernacular architecture is particularly evident in our modern house designs. In planning we’ve built a reputation for gaining consents on tricky sites locally, including Green Belt and Listed Buildings.’ Both Jonathan and Julie have lived in Amersham many years giving them in-depth local knowledge.

Trustworthy reliable contractors

With an extensive network of consultants and builders at their disposal, the architecture team

will be poised for action as soon as drawings have been approved. ‘We work with many contractors of varying size and all within a 10-mile radius. We’ve used most of them for a long time but if we are considering working with a new builder, we will go and see their work and speak to their former clients to make sure all due diligence has been done,’ says Julie. The tender process, often one of the most daunting tasks ahead of choosing a builder, has been drilled down to a fine art by the team at JDA+I. ‘We take great care over the first stage tender going to three or four builders and getting basic information. Once we’ve narrowed it down to one or two, we can negotiate with our clients preferred choice, or carry out a competitive tender. For most clients, budget is critical and we typically suggest a cost plan be prepared by a QS early in the design process – it’s like a great long shopping list that we can use to refine the design and for negotiation,’ Julie explains. Whilst build projects can be subject to unexpected circumstances, the JCT contracts administered by JDA+I ensure that they have a clear financial bottom line and a start and end date.

Supply and demand

Alongside the contractors is a network of expert

local craftsmen, trades and suppliers, most of whom have been working with JDA+I for many years. Mike Manners, the director of cabinet makers Top Notch Designs explains, ‘Our relationship goes back over 20 years and is an important part of our business. That means that when we get to site it’s likely we already know the contractors and other trades on first name terms. We understand the way they work and they know how we work which makes everything easier.’ Along with the friendly professional relationships on site, Mike’s work partnership with the firm has encouraged him to push the envelope. ‘Most of our projects with JDA+I have been challenging. They really push us into new territory but that’s how we innovate and keep things moving forward. One example we were proud of is a sprayed metal back panel for a kitchen island,’ he says. Such longstanding affiliations between the firm and suppliers also helps the bottom line. ‘Because we’ve worked with our suppliers for so long, we can get favourable prices for our clients and timelines can often be shortened,’ explains Julie. With every local advantage set in their favour, JDA+I is reaping the rewards of three decades of expertise, dedication and professionalism.

INDOOR & OUTDOOR LIVING

UNLEASH YOUR FULL POTENTIAL WITH ORIGIN

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on health and wellness, with individuals seeking to incorporate more physical activity into their daily routines. While gyms and outdoor activities offer various options, one activity stands out for its holistic benefits: swimming. Swimming is often touted as one of the best forms of exercise, and for good reason. It’s a low-impact activity that works the entire body, engaging muscles from head to toe without putting stress on joints. Whether you’re doing laps or engaging in water aerobics, the resistance of the water provides a challenging workout that improves strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health. But the benefits of swimming extend far beyond physical fitness. The buoyancy of water makes it an ideal activity for anyone with chronic pain or mobility issues.

102 APRIL 2024 HOUSE & GARDEN

It also promotes relaxation and stress relief, with the rhythmic motion of swimming and water moving over the body inducing a meditative state that calms the mind and reduces anxiety.

Some of the key advantages of having an indoor swimming pool linked to your home or in your garden are accessibility and privacy. Unlike public pools, which may have limited hours or require time and travel to get there, a home indoor pool is available whenever you desire.

Additionally, indoor pools offer convenience which encourages consistency in your exercise routine, allowing you to reap the long-term physical and mental health benefits of regular swimming. With an Origin pool, you can tailor the environment to suit your preferences, working with our experts to design the temperature, lighting and ambience you want, creating a social hub for friends and family or a serene oasis that promotes relaxation and wellbeing. Whether you prefer a tranquil morning swim to start your day or a refreshing dip after a stressful day at work, an indoor pool provides a sanctuary where you can escape the pressures of daily life and focus on your health.

For those considering adding an indoor pool to their home, the benefits extend beyond health. Not only can it enhance the value and appeal of your property, but it also provides a long-term investment in your health and wellness. Indoor pools can be seamlessly integrated into existing homes, whether as a standalone structure or an extension that complements your architectural style. Opting for a pool house extension means your indoor pool becomes an integral part of your home, effortlessly weaving swimming and relaxation into your daily routine. On the other hand, a stand-alone pool house can serve as a personal haven nestled in your garden which provides a tranquil escape, undisturbed by the usual hustle and bustle of your home.

Whether you envision a modern, minimalist structure or a more classic and elegant design, your pool house can be tailored to elevate and harmonise with your home and garden’s aesthetic. The health and wellness benefits of swimming are undeniable, and having an indoor pool at home offers a convenient and effective way to incorporate this fantastic activity into your daily lifestyle. From improved physical fitness to enhanced mental well-being, swimming provides a holistic approach to health that can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages and abilities. Consider investing in an Origin indoor pool today and discover the transformative power of swimming in the comfort of your own home.

Spring Styling Tips

Keeping it real. That’s what we do. Real wood furniture made by real people for real life.

We’re a small British furniture manufacturer, handcrafting beautiful furniture in our workshop in the North East of England. We also have a retail website where we sell to customers from across the UK.

Our solid wood furniture makes a perfect impression. Every single piece is handmade-toorder by skilled craftspeople and designed to last a lifetime.

We only use sustainably sourced timbers for our furniture and work hard to reduce our wastage as well as use recycled packaging that can then itself be recycled.

Spring Styling Tips from Sophie at Funky Chunky Furniture: “Spring is a refreshing season, a season where nature feels like it’s hit the reboot button, and all around us, our parks, gardens and fields comes back to their glorious, colourful best.

With cheeky snowdrops the first to brave the cold mornings, followed swiftly by cheerful daffodils, buds on the trees, and the birds full of song.

“Shrug off the cosiness of Winter and bring that happy Spring vibe into your home with some simple changes to your everyday as well as your decor.

“Start by flinging windows wide, to let that fresh air in. Nothing heralds the end of winter more than seeing curtains fluttering in a gently breeze coming through an open window, hearing birds happily singing away outside.

“Update your window boxes and herb planters with early flowering plants like Pansies and Primroses.

“Add pops of colour to your rooms. Pop flowers in vases or jugs, or show your house plants some love with an updated plant pot cover. Place a colourful throw over the arm of the sofa, for those cooler evenings. If you love a seasonal wreath on your front door, or around your home, it’s time to update those too. Clean and put away the wintry ones and choose delightfully bright and fun ones to add to that Spring theme.

“And with Easter just around the corner, you can start to think about decorating your home for that too. An Easter tree makes a wonderful statement in your home. Place a few large branches into a jug and decorate with Easter ornaments. The perfect place for it is either in a now redundant hearth, or on a console table in a hallway.” funky-chunky-furniture.co.uk

Bringing 2024’s Interior Design Trends to Life

Tori Young, Senior Interior Designer at HollandGreen, provides insight on making them work for you.

Picture plush, soft textures and tactile elements create spaces that are not just stylish but also incredibly inviting and restful. This year, it’s all about embracing your unique style and celebrating ‘quiet luxury’ with timeless interiors that truly speak to you.

Connection with Nature

Biophilic design lies at the heart of this trend, aiming to forge a profound connection with nature, creating the same comforting and grounded ambiance experienced in natural surroundings. It’s a focus on natural light, incorporating organic materials and integrating plants and earthy tones into your home environment, which really pays off in promoting feelings of wellbeing.

New Neutrals and Tone-on-Tone Interiors

Cool grey walls are a thing of the past. In the last year or so we have seen a move towards warmer neutrals in the home, Farrow & Ball Slipper Satin is a classic I come back to again and again, especially in a more

contemporary space. Edward Bulmer has a whole range named “New Neutrals” with warmer taupes, warm greys and warm clay colours which are worth checking out. If in doubt, go chalky white, rather than cooler white. You really can’t go wrong with Coat’s “Mindful” or Little Greene’s “Slaked Lime”.

Top tip - paint the walls, skirtings, architraves, cornice and windows all one colour for total colour saturation.

The Allure of Artisan Craftmanship

The demand for durable, distinctive, and sustainable furniture pieces has fuelled a surge in the use of responsibly sourced or reclaimed wood, meticulously handcrafted and customisable. Embracing more organic, curved shapes in wooden furniture with oneof-a-kind design features introduces an artisanal touch and a sought-after modern aesthetic.

Mixed Metals

In 2024, mixed metals are making a comeback in design. Chrome and nickel are gaining popularity in sanitaryware, for example Waterworks’ nickel finishes

that offer a warmer alternative to chrome. Mixing metals like bronze or brass with nickel taps can create a striking and cohesive look, especially if they share the same design language. ABI Interiors provide affordable, powder-coated metal options, perfect for spaces like gyms or children’s bathrooms, and you can also consider adding chrome mid-century furniture to a room for a touch of retro flair.

The Unique Utility

The utilitarian utility space within homes is no longer restricted to mere functionality, this space now invites the infusion of bold colours, vibrant wallpapers, and attention-grabbing statement lighting to elevate its aesthetic appeal. Despite its conventional role as a smaller, secondary area in the home, the trend for 2024 urges homeowners to be bold.

Hotel at Home

The allure of hotel-inspired design is growing. Bedrooms are now transformed into comforting sanctuaries with deluxe bedding and plush velvet textiles, and spa-like bathrooms feature freestanding baths, steam showers, and luxury touches.

“Throw in a splash of red somewhere in the room, whether it’s a vase of flowers, a coffee table book or a red lacquered picture frame… it will balance the space and provides some flair”

This evolution caters to a desire for indulgent, rejuvenating spaces at home, blending opulence with the comfort of staying in and hosting.
