ONCOPOLE: A new kind of French trip

For years, school language trips have involved remarkably similar activities; language lessons in the morning and afternoon activities in the local area sum up the vast majority of such excursions.And rightly so, since there needs to be both a core language component as well as the opportunity for broader cultural appreciation.

chools now, though, are under pressure to deliver a more rewarding experience, hence why Merchant Taylors' has begun to expand the range and quality of its trips abroad. In Modern Languages, this started with a memorable Spanish trip to Cuba a few years ago. Geography trips to China and a Duke of Edinburgh's Award trip to Nepal have continued the trend and now the French department has organised a stunning opportunity for our linguists at the Oncopole, home of the Institut Universitaire du Cancer de Toulouse (IUCT), one of Europe's

top centres for cancer treatment and research. This is the product of a collaboration between a cancer centre (the Claudius Régaud Institute) and the oncology departments of Toulouse University Hospital in order to offer a complete and integrated range of treatments. This brings together teams involved in fundamental research, clinical research and applied research, specialising in all types and stages of cancer. As experts in complex cases and rare tumours, treatment combines cutting-edge medicine and a heavy emphasis on interpersonal relations. The IUCT Oncopole favours a holistic approach to illness in all its aspects, whether medical, psychological or biological. IUCT Oncopole therefore brings together doctors, surgeons, radiotherapists, health professionals, teachers, researches and industrialists. In all, there are 3000 employees on an enormous 550 acre site. There is also a biopark for biotech startups, a public cancer research centre, a centre of advanced technologies for life sciences, a start-ups incubator and hotels, services and associations for patients and families. Boys will have the opportunity to shadow doctors, gain an overview of the fabrication of chemotherapy drugs, be shown oncogenetic research on cancer heredity and get involved in data analysis. The work experience is open to those aged 16 years above, offering encouragement to those boys who have taken their GCSE French one year early and are keen to continue their study of the language. There has already been great interest from boys, as they start to see that their hard work in language acquisition can open doors far away from the classroom. We are keen to strengthen the link in future years and find more such specialist opportunities for boys to employ their language skills. Show Stopping Performances showcasing talent at Abbot's Hill

he purpose-built theatre and sports complex here at Abbot’s Hill has been busy hosting an exciting series of events this term as our girls have used the space to showcase their talents. First “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” played to sell-out audiences who were impressed not only by the first-rate performances, but also the highly imaginative set and costume designs, a hallmark of Abbot’s Hill productions. Then the theatre turned itself over to Gym & Dance Displays where girls at both Senior and Junior level could perform a wide range of musical, dance and gymnastic routines, in solo and group performances. Budding engineers at Abbot’s Hill were thrilled to be judged winners of the Intermediate competition during the Dacorum Rotary Technology Tournament at Ashlyn’s School in March. The bridge-building challenges, using only basic craft materials, put the girls’ mathematical and scientific skills to the test. To see our Prep School and Nursery in action on a normal school

or once the despairing pundits, pollsters and commentators are in agreement: children’s manners are getting worse. Table manners are a thing of the past, respect for elders is out of the window, and so on. Yet many parents riposte that it is no longer a question of manners, it’s a question of natural behaviour. Their little darling may like to be louder than the town crier, may want to crawl round other people’s feet in a restaurant, may need to have their parent’s instant attention for their own important demands - but they’re just children, and who are we to say that these natural impulses should be cramped within our own narrow view of manners? Why not try and find a compromise between old-school stiffness and laissez-faire carelessness? Follow these basic precepts: • Teach your child empathy from an early age. Keep reiterating remarks like “how would you feel if someone said that to you?”, and you’ll get your child into the habit of thinking about the impact their behaviour has on others. • Emphasise the importance of sharing. This doesn’t come naturally, so you have to actually tell children to offer sweets around, give other kids a go on the swing etc. Again, repetition is valuable. • Remind them of their ps and qs. This effectively means endlessly reiterations of “say please”, “say thank you”… • Teach your children not to interrupt when you’re speaking. Again, repeated reminders work best. • Teach your child to listen carefully. This might entail them getting rewards for sitting still and listening attentively. Listening well is an incredibly important social skill, which will prove invaluable when it comes to making conversations.

Table manners are by no means natural. Eventually you will have to teach children to wield and knife and fork correctly, not slurp from a glass, and may even introduce them to the arcane mysteries of correct cutlery usage, tipping soup bowls way from you etc. Don’t get bogged down in these minutiae. Concentrate instead on the absolute essentials. And always bear in mind that if you get too uptight about manners, you will turn family mealtimes into an absolute purgatory that is dreaded by children and adults alike. Repeated lectures about nagging remarks about shortcomings do not make for a convivial atmosphere. Absolutely Essential Table Manners • Wait until everyone has started before you do; if you are specifically invited to start immediately, it is acceptable to do so. • Always eat with your mouth closed. • Always use cutlery (fingers are for bread, fruit and barbecues) • Never reach across the table and help yourself to food; always ask for food to be passed to you (a please won’t go amiss). • Eat as much as you can, then put your knife and fork together on the plate to indicate you have finished. • Ask permission to leave the table, or wait until there is a general move to do so Debrett’s Cygnets, classes teaching dining etiquette for children from the age of 7. Halamar Developments The undiscovered gem Halamar are a quiet company that do not choose to shout their presence

hey are a developer whose ethos is to create great value by providing more than one would expect at any level. Their emerging folio of projects is testament to this. Halamar have, to date, designed and developed 16 family homes and 2 gated apartment developments varying in size from 4,000 sq ft to 31,000 sq ft in Buckinghamshire and Surrey, amounting to 200,000 sq ft of new build. The houses featured here and on their website, both under construction and completed, show their commitment to providing a high build quality and excellent

quality of space in which one can feel comfortable. Halamar are also currently developing 54 luxury apartments and 2 penthouses of excellent standard in Chancery Lane, Westminster and Golden Square, East Mayfair, totalling 60,000 sq ft which are coming to market in late 2016 and 2017, respectively. Their expectation is to raise the bar in terms of provision in both of these projects and are encouraged by the market feedback. Their desire is to create a heritage of seamless transitions from the development of an asset to the ownership of a home.

Golden Square I have yet to see a developer as prolific in terms of their ambition and scale as Halamar, comments Chris Bovingdon, Associate at Knight Frank. What is fascinating is that with every house they have built recently, is that not only have they achieved new price records for the specific location, thereby silencing their critics, but there has been either competition or a backup buyer in each case. With Penn Grange, a stunning 4300 square foot house in Penn village, many locals felt that a figure in excess of £1.3m would not be achieved, however we had 5 buyers interested and we achieved just under the guide price of £1.85m. With Eaton House which we guided at £7m, an off plan sale was achieved but not only did we set a new record for Beaconsfield New Town, there are two other similar Halamar sales in the process as a result, which were never even thought of 5 years ago. The goal of Halamar is to bring the quality of new build typically found in St Georges Hill and Wentworth to Buckinghamshire and their recent sales are a testament to that. I am looking forward to the marketing of Wellington Court, 8 new apartments on the prestigious Penn Road in Beaconsfield New Town, and I am expecting demand to be off the charts.

The Frost Partnership and Knight Frank in Beaconsfield have been acting jointly for Halamar since 2010, comments Roger Mead at the Frost Partnership and have recently sold Albany House, Penn Road – c £5,500,000, Eaton House, Penn Road – c £6,500,000, Penn Grange – c. £1,7500,000 and without exception all the purchasers have been overwhelmed by the exceptional specification and attention to detail. Roger Mead also mentions that they are about to commence marketing four more new houses for Halamar in Beaconsfield in only the best locations, all being within a short walk of the New Town and station.

WINDSOR REPERTORY FESTIVAL IS BACK! Six weeks of top quality theatre

ast year, to celebrate 200 years of theatre in Thames Street, Theatre Royal Windsor brought back the weekly rep. This was met with universal acclaim, and by popular demand they present the return of the Windsor Repertory Festival in June and July. And, to make sure you can enjoy all six productions, they are offering very special prices across the whole season. The festival will be produced with Paul Taylor-Mills, one of the most promising young producers in the UK. He has been responsible for recent productions such as the Olivier Award winning In the Heights and he is now Andrew Lloyd Webber’s advisory producer at the St James Theatre in London. In 1938 John Counsell created the Windsor Repertory Company at Theatre Royal Windsor. In a homage to the theatre’s heritage, they will bring together a team of professional actors and creatives who will prepare a repertoire of plays which will be rehearsed during the day ready to open

the following weeks, while that week’s play is performed each evening. The actors always learn a great deal from this experience, sometimes finding themselves working as stage manager one week, only to be playing the lead role the next! The art of the matter Choosing the right piece of art can transform a room and create an instant talking point.

nd now, with Spring well and truly under way, it’s an excellent time to brighten up those plain walls and pick the perfect piece to really make a difference. The thrill of searching for and deciding upon your first piece of original art can be huge so to provide a helping hand, plus plenty of expert advice and knowledge, is award-winning Great Missenden art gallery Carina Haslam Art, which is partnering with Gerrards Cross law firm B P Collins LLP to hold a private viewing of original artwork next month. The event will be on 5 May at B P Collins offices in Gerrards Cross, as part of the celebrations marking its 50th anniversary this year, where a wide range of paintings and sculptures will be available to purchase on the night. Enhancing the interior design of a freshly decorated room, or placing your own mark on a newly purchased property with a one-off piece of art, can really lift the mood of a room and everyone in it. Whether you choose to compliment, or contrast with, the surroundings in which it is displayed, art helps provide focal sites and talking points every time. Carina Haslam Art already exhibits work at the Saatchi Gallery, at Affordable Art Fairs around the country and has 28 APRIL 2016

regular exhibitions throughout the year in Great Missenden. The gallery promotes a wide range of artists, both critically acclaimed names as well as newcomers, and the emphasis is on work which is original, accessible and affordable. Exhibits range from life-sized bronzes, land and seascapes to semi-abstract work, and pieces have been purchased by clients including Flemings bank, Fortnum and Mason, Nicky Haslam, the House of Lords and many private collectors around the world. nce the weekend retreat of the Rothschilds, Waddesdon Manor is a Renaissance-style château housing one of the finest collections of French 18th century decorative arts in the world as well as magnificent English portraits and Dutch Old Master paintings. The garden has a parterre, aviary, seasonal displays, walks, fountains and statuary. As one of the most visited historic houses among England’s National Trust properties, Waddesdon was built from 1877 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild to display his treasures and entertain the fashionable world of Victorian society. The Manor re-opened for the new season on Wednesday 23 March, and among the exhibitions this year French Royal Furniture by Jean-Henri Riesener will be in the spotlight in the White Drawing room, allowing visitors to take a closer look at three extraordinary chests by the celebrated 18th-century cabinetmaker. They are among twelve pieces of furniture now at the Manor that were originally at the Palace of Versailles. A new addition to the collection at Waddesdon, an elaborate manuscript petition by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin,

a great 18th-century draughtsman, will also be on display. Colourscape returns for its third year to the North Front from Saturday 28 May to Sunday 5 June. The extremely popular labyrinth of 74 interlinked chambers is an unforgettable experience allowing visitors to enter a new world where you can explore intense light, space and colour while enjoying unusual musical experiences. From late April to July there will be a several music events performed in the Reading Room at Windmill Hill. A particular highlight will be a weekend of music in May, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May, dedicated to the intimate, domestic music from the Bach family. ‘Feast’ is back at the Manor over the weekend of 18 and 19 June. The festival is a celebration of food, drink and performance inspired by ‘The Baron’s Treat’ where Baron Ferdinand would host local families in the grounds for an annual garden party. Feast will see the North Front once again transformed with elaborately decorated tables for visitors to take a seat at and enjoy a picnic or enjoy some of the delicious food on offer from one of the 60 handpicked artisan food and wine stalls. There will be a range of extraordinary and captivating performances which will delight all audiences as well as craft activities for the family including poetry workshops and cookery classes. A truly magnificent achievement There is now just one year to go until the opening of a multi-million pound hospice with a radically-different approach to caring for terminally-ill patients. Jo Woolf, Chief Executive Officer of South Bucks Hospice, tells why this is so momentous for the area.

eath is a deeply personal journey that each individual approaches in a unique way. Yet far too many people are denied their final wishes of being allowed to die at home. South Bucks Hospice enables a patient, who might otherwise need a bed in an institution, to spend their last days in their own home with their family and friends, if that is what they want. Our day hospice in High Wycombe has been enormously successful over the last few years, but we need to move to a far bigger building to meet the demands of a growing and rapidlyageing population. That is why I am thrilled we have raised £3.8million to enable us to move in May 2017 to vastly-larger purpose-built premises – but we now need your help with the £850,000 annual running costs. We are a small charity, successfully punching well above our weight and have done magnificently to raise this amount – but the next task is to find the money to keep the hospice going year after year. We are the only day hospice in a catchment area of 320,000 people in this area. Even if everyone wanted to spend their last days in a hospice, there simply would not be enough beds to meet the demand. Our day hospice allows people to manage their life, and their death, in the way they prefer – and in many cases this is at home with their family. We offer expert palliative rehabilitative care and we are the catalyst for change. All too often, patients and their families leave too much to chance,

but our services are proven to help people plan ahead and come to terms with their illnesses. The National Director for Hospice Care, Dr Ros Taylor MBE, is quoted as saying hospices must be open to change, both in culture and practice. So I am pleased to report that South Bucks Hospice is indeed leading the way in this culture of change. Our 15,000 square foot new building in Totteridge will put all of our services under one roof and allow us room to expand. It will allow us more space to focus on human contact, relationships, families, planning ahead, spirituality and bereavement. It must also be noted that hospices are not all about end-of-life care. We also allow seriously-ill people to rebuild their lives and come to terms to life-changing conditions. But our wonderful expert staff are also there to help you meet your challenges in your darkest days. Make no mistake, May 2017 is going to be a momentous month in the calendar of South Bucks. Irrespective of whether you’ve ever come into contact with a hospice before, we hope you will back us by either volunteering or donating. London Marathon 2016 Since the first ever London Marathon on 29th March 1981, the race has grown in size, stature and popularity ever since. Now established among the major events in the sporting calendar, the London Marathon is shown on television in more that 150 countries around the world. As a fundraising event, there is no race in the world that comes close to the London Marathon.

n iconic image of the event are the thousands of runners pounding the streets with sheer determination, to raise money for charity, many in fancy dress, hoping to stand out from the crowds. More than three quarters of competitors now run for a good cause and a third of all entry places are offered by charitable organisations. When Virgin was announced as the title sponsor of the London Marathon in 2010, the ambition was to work together to reach a charity fundraising target of £1/4 billion in five years. This figure has been

broken, with the total raised for charity in the five years of Virgin Money sponsorship now standing at £261.4 million. In addition, over the last three decades the London Marathon Charitable Trust has awarded more than £35 million in grants to develop sport and recreation facilities in the capital and other areas in the country where the London marathon stages events. The elite races start at 9am for women and 9.45am for men, with the London Marathon wheelchair races beginning at 9.20am and the mass race at 9.45am. Celebrities lined up to take part this year include Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes, Hollywood A-lister Natalie Dormer, Radio 2 presenter and new Top Gear host Chris Evans, Iwan Thomas MBE, EastEnders’ Charlie Brooks and Robert ‘Judge’ Rinder. Some advice to those that wish to go along and support and cheer on the brave runners, many roads are closed on race day, so the best way to get around is using the London Underground, South Eastern and Docklands Light Railway (DLR), who lay on extra services especially. Remember, the trains will be busy all day – expect it to be like rush hour. You’ll probably have to queue at some stations and the tube lines may be forced to shut temporarily throughout the day to help ease the crowds. Investment drives Gerrards Cross Golf Club forward Established in 1922 and set in the picturesque grounds of an ancient English estate, with extensive parkland and wooded areas, Gerrards Cross golf course is one of the finest in Buckinghamshire.

At 6,243 yards, the par 69 men’s course can prove challenging, even for more accomplished golfers, while at 5,594 yards, the ladies’ par 72 course has more than enough to hold the attention of lower and higher handicappers. The course is kept in pristine condition thanks to the green staff. Lewis has been teaching and playing professionally since 2000. After a short playing career on the European Challenge and South African Tours, and playing in the 2004 British Open at Royal Troon, he decided to turn to club professional golf. Along with assistants Darnell Scadding and Chip Butler, Lewis is responsible for the coaching at Gerrards Cross Golf Club. Burnham Beeches Golf Club 125th Anniversary It’s a big year for Burnham Beeches Golf Club as it celebrates its 125th anniversary, the first Club in Buckinghamshire to do so.

To mark this momentous occasion the Club have a number of special events and initiatives lined up through the year. For the first time in the Clubs history Burnham Beeches will be hosting a national tournament run by England Golf. The English Senior Women’s Amateur will attract all the best Ladies throughout the Country to test their skills in June over the Club’s fine parkland golf course. In addition a grand summer ball with marquee and entertainment is to be held in July for the Members. Michael Roe, a long standing Member, has also updated the book “ Golf amongst the Beeches “ charting all the major events in the Club’s history and proceeds from the sale of this will go to the Captain’s Charity – Alzheimers Dementia Support. Although the Club has a long history they are also looking to the future and have introduced new initiatives to encourage the next generation of golfers. All Juniors aged 12 or under are entitled to free membership and this includes tuition through the school holidays from the Club’s Professionals. Furthermore there is no joining fee for any new Member under the age of 25 and reduced subscriptions up to age of 30. The Club also have a limited number of Full memberships available for those looking for a friendly quality golfing

experience at a Club that continues to grow and invest in its facilities. The beautiful course sits on the edge of the ancient Burnham Beeches woodland and offers peace and tranquillity amid all the hustle and bustle of being so close to London. At 6449 yards off the back tees the course offers a good test for the better golfer however the set-up is such that all level of player can enjoy the layout and the fact that the 9th green is so close to the club house means it is the perfect course for those may only want to play 9 holes. Going from Strength to Strength After a fantastic 2015 during which more than 200 new members joined the Club, Temple is looking forward to an even more successful 2016.

“I’ve been a surgeon for 10 years. I am based at the Lister hospital for my NHS post and Spire Harpenden for my private work.”

wHat do you do?

“I’m a fully accredited Plastic and Cosmetic surgeon, specialising in breast, skin and head & neck microsurgical reconstruction. This involves using a patient’s own tissue to reconstruct areas in the body, following cancer treatment or trauma. This is performed with microsurgery and avoids the use of foreign materials, giving a more natural result. I am also fully trained in surgical and non-surgical aesthetic treatments, specialising in the face, breasts and body. This includes procedures such as breast augmentation, reduction or uplift; facial surgery including facelifts, nose reshaping and eyelid rejuvenation. Body surgery includes tummy tucks, liposuction and lipofilling (fat injections).”

wHat questions do patients commonly ask you?

“Will I look artificial or look like I’ve had plastic surgery? I reassure my patients that the idea of aesthetic surgery is to try to create a natural look so that you look more rejuvenated and fresh, but do not look artificial. A lot of patients are also concerned about scarring; with any kind of surgery there will be scars, however as a plastic surgeon I have been trained to place these scars in areas that are hidden and not so obvious.”

wHat’s tHe biggest mytH about cosmetic surgery? “That it’s only beneficial in terms of appearance. Although it does enhance appearance to an extent, I feel the greatest benefit is in terms of patients self-esteem and confidence - something which is not appreciated by people who haven’t had cosmetic surgery. This is particularly the case in 78

breast reconstruction after a patient has had a mastectomy. Although the main aim of treatment is to remove the cancer which is life threatening, the reconstruction of the breast is particularly important in terms of improving quality of life and regaining confidence after such a life changing event.’’

wHat is your favourite tHing about being a surgeon?

The thing I enjoy most is the impact that I can have on a patient’s life in a positive way, just from a surgical procedure.

wHat do you do in your spare time?

I am a keen footballer and I still continue playing to keep myself fit and feel that it is a great stress reliever. My other pleasure is cars, and I enjoy watching races as well as going to the tracks and driving myself. I also enjoy travelling when time allows, and am particularly fond of Italy, as I love the food and walking around the beautiful historic sites.

wHat’s your favourite film?

I really enjoy science fiction – I have recently seen Interstellar, a film about space and time travel- which I really enjoyed.

It seems to me that somewhere over the last few years the HEALTH part of health & fitness is being lost. tumbleweed. dandelions on your lawn. gremlins. those are all things that are notoriously hard to get rid of. but not quite as hard, i think, as getting rid of love handles…

f you’ve tried losing weight, it’s quite likely that you’ve slimmed down all over – but those bulges around your gut are still there, spilling over the tops of your jeans and making it hard to wear fitted clothes. It’s similarly possible to whittle away every ounce of spare body fat through exercise – and yet still keep your love handles. They are usually the last thing to go, and for many people, never go at all.

First of all, some people simply have a genetic predisposition to storing fat around their love handles – just as others are predisposed to storing fat around their tummies or thighs. That’s their natural body shape, and it has nothing to do with weight. You can be extremely lean, but you still have to store fat somewhere. Often, hormones are a factor too. High levels of oestrogen are associated with body fat being stored around the love handle area - in men as well as women. Second of all, it’s impossible to target your love handles with specific exercises, like you might target your arms, glutes or abs. Sure, you can do exercises that burn fat all over your body – but if your love handles are where your body likes storing fat, they’re not going anywhere. I know how frustrating this is from personal experience. I played squash at competitive level, was very careful with what I ate and yet my shirts never fitted me right because I just could not get rid of my love handles. I cannot tell you how many times I considered giving up my exercise and diet, because after all that effort – and 82 APRIL 2016

f you are thinking about replacement bifolding and sliding doors for an existing “opening” to replace French doors, sliding patio doors or casement windows, or indeed looking at fitting folding and sliding doors into an extension - getting the right configuration first time round is vital to ensure their long-term practical operation. When it comes to “Bi-Fold” doors the clue is in the name, yet, despite this, many double glazing customers still get into hot water when having bifolding doors fitted, as before ordering they did not take the time to think through the ramifications of certain configurations. The key thing with bi-folding doors is to remember that each “pair” of bi-folds, opens and closes in tandem, so cannot operate as individual sections, they are in-effect one. As these two folding door sections are inextricably linked, no pair of bifolding doors can therefore accommodate a normal door handle, nor can one of these two sections operate as a travel door without the other opening or closing at the same time. Consequently, if you want to have a single travel door as part of your bifolding door configuration, you need to have an odd number of sections, namely 3, 5, 7 or 9 panes etc. Only high quality bi-folding doors will last regular use, as quality bi-folds are highly technical pieces of kit (and yes, they are expensive as a consequence!), it is vital when purchasing double glazed bifolding and sliding doors to invest wisely in robust enough products that will still be operational in 10 years’ time when the guarantee runs out and the

homeowner is left to foot the bills for all the call-out charges, parts and labour to get the folding doors operational and secure again. To avoid such issues, it is wise not to buy cheap folding and sliding doors, or indeed bi-folding doors without a cast iron warranty from a firm you are 100% certain will be around for at least the next 10 years to service the guarantee. It is worth asking yourself why some established UK independent double glazing manufacturers and installers who supply and fit aluminium and UPVC front doors, back doors, French doors and sliding patio doors in both aluminium and UPVC, refuse to supply and fit UPVC bi-folding doors. Could it be they are not fit for purpose? As a material, UPVC flexes, so is not the ideal product to use for bi-folding doors which need rigidity to operate well, and not be in danger of popping out of alignment. High quality double glazed aluminium bi-folding doors not only offer better security than plastic folding doors, but tend to have slimmer profiles, so are aesthetically more pleasing and deliver more glass and daylight. Yes UPVC folding doors are much cheaper to buy, but it is up to each property owner if they want to take on the risks involved, and are prepared to have less glass and light in the room in question. The optimum number of sections for a bifolding door for each particular property is really determined by the size of the aperture and how often these folding and sliding double glazed doors will be used. If you are looking for all the sections to slide in one direction, then a 3, 5, 7 or 9 section door will deliver a travel door with a normal door handle. The problem with 2, 4, 6 or 8 section bifolds doors which all flow in one direction is they cannot have a normal door handle, so are unable to fold up together properly, and therefore are more limited in their operation. Make sure that the doors you have fitted, come with “D” handles to assist with the opening and closing of the doors, as dragging them from one end can pull and stretch

the gasket, leading to unnecessary time consuming service calls. All bi-folding doors systems, whether made of aluminium, steel, UPVC or wood have their limitations in terms of both overall height and overall width, and indeed maximum and minimum achievable pane section sizes. So before creating an opening for bi-folding doors, do make sure that the product you are considering having installed will actually be able to fit it! It is better to make the opening to the optimum size of the bi-folding door system you have chosen, rather than the other way round. One top tip to remember is that these systems are highly technical bits of kits, so make sure they are fitted by professional installers with experience fitting the actual system you are having installed. Many reputable firms will not supply bi-folding doors on a supply only basis for this very reason. Finally, it is worth knowing that some bespoke aluminium bi-folding door systems allow for one single section at one end to swing open, allowing say a 3 section sliding and folding door to butt up to this, enabling the property to have a travel door, pair of French door and bi-folding doors all in one configuration of 3 linked sections, plus one independent swinging open section. Think carefully whether you want your bi-folding doors to a) open to the left or to the right, b) fold inwardly or outwardly and c) have a standard or low threshold. So before ordering bi-folds, take your time and ask an expert for a demonstration of whichever bifolding double glazed product you are considering before committing to a purchase, as not getting it right first time can be very costly. Helen started her search in February 2015, and after months of missed appointments, no-shows, or companies that could do part of a job but not all of it, she finally approached KB Studios. “It was like the answer to my prayers,” she said. “At last I’d found a reputable company that had been established for years, had an excellent reputation and the capability to do everything from the design to the fit. My kitchen makes me happy “I feel genuinely happy when I walk into it.” When Tracey and Richard moved into their home 14 years ago it was a new-build with the kitchen already chosen by the site manager. Five years ago they decided to refresh it, putting new doors and work surfaces onto their old units. But the result felt like a compromise. Here, experts reveal their illuminating advice on ‘seeing the light’, and the top trends for 2016...

BIG & BOLD Industrial style is vying with innovative lighting design for attention - and size does matter for today’s lamps, says Mark Holloway, 44, owner of lighting and furniture specialists, Holloways of Ludlow. SWITCH ON: To large lights - chandeliers, drum pendants and giant floor lamps - and materials such as wood veneers, concrete and hand-blown glass. LEADING LIGHTS: Solid, down-to-earth style is embodied in an Old School Electric Oval Bulkhead Light, in a brass finish, £55. Diva Floor Lamp, £1,749, combines a mouthblown inner glass globe with an exterior made from 32 individual pieces of wood, and is available in laminated oak or walnut.

LIGHTBULB MOMENT Decorative light bulbs, glass shades and cluster pendants are stars of this year’s light range, says Kirstin White, 29, lighting buyer at Habitat. SWITCH ON: To feature lighting - oversized floor lamps through to decorative wall lights - as a form of functional art, which will make a statement in any room. MAJOR IN METAL Metallics, especially copper’s warm tones, combine with light to give a warm glow, and will take centre stage in this year’s collections, says Victoria Atkin, 45, co-founder of Atkin And Thyme, specialists in hand-crafted and artisan homeware. SWITCH ON: To pieces made in a traditional way by skilled craftsmen, which bring authenticity to an interior, and embrace transparency with clear glass bases or shades. LEADING LIGHTS: A Castello Three Cluster Ceiling Pendant is a beauty as well as a bargain, as it’s currently reduced from £49 to £29. Floor lamps are versatile, because they can be moved to highlight a feature or area at will, and a Hector Angled Floor Lamp in Copper, £159, is handsome as well as practical. COLOUR & CALM More use of colour, and co-ordinating the style of a room’s lights, are two strong features highlighted by Nadia McCowan Hill, 32, style expert at online interiors company, Wayfair. Up-lighting makes a space feel larger, low-hung pendants give an impression of height and clusters of lights add cosiness. going Back to the Future It’s no secret that the furniture world loves a good blast from the past when it comes to introducing ‘new trends’ and at this year’s IMM Cologne Furniture Fair it was no different. There is something very comforting about a familiar design or colour scheme, which transports us back to simpler times. So how did this translate into the collections of our biggest brands? With all this in mind we saw many of our biggest brands celebrating their heritage and values within the new collections. Rediscovered classics of mid-century modernity were paired on the stands with new designs covered in materials such as rattan and bold velvets, displaying a strong association with the Seventies – a trend that has filtered into interiors from the world of fashion. So what pieces caught our eye in Cologne? Going out is the new staying in so why not do both? This year B&B Italia reconfirmed the importance of good design when it comes to our outdoor spaces. Gio, designed by Antonio Citterio, is a new outdoor collection with a contemporary classic look dedicated to living in the open air. Tile with style

hoosing the right tiles for your bathroom needs some careful consideration. With so many varieties on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Choose from ceramic, slate, glass and metal tiles, plain or patterned, large and small, smooth or textured. The options are seemingly endless. So, to help you through the decision process, we’ve put together some practical tips, making finding the perfect tiles for you bathroom, a breeze CERAMIC OR NATURAL STONE TILES? Ceramic tiles are the most popular by a long way. They’re durable, their glazed surface makes them highly resistant to harbouring germs, they’re usually very easy to keep clean, and come in styles to suit every taste. If you opt for ceramics, the most important thing to be aware of is that they do tend to vary from lot to lot, so make sure all the boxes you buy are stamped with the same lot number. But if you’d rather try something different... Glazed terracotta tiles are hugely popular right now with the trend for Mediterranean style bathrooms. Good quality terracotta is not only gorgeously rustic, it’ll last virtually forever, but can be hard to find. So the cheapest option might not be the best. Natural stone tiles like granite, slate, marble and even terrazzo (composed of marble chips imbedded in concrete and polished smooth) are beautiful, distinctive, and luxurious. They’ll cost you though. And these materials tend to be porous, so you may need to apply a seal to stop the tiles absorbing water. Make sure you discuss this with the supplier before you buy. Glass, metal, and porcelain tiles look brilliant if installed properly – but that’s easier said than done. Unless you’re really a dab hand at DIY you might want to leave the fitting of these to the experts. ADD TEXTURE AND INTEREST WITH BATHROOM TILES With the majority of bathroom suites being sleek and white, tiles are a

great way to add texture and interest into a room that can otherwise, look fairly clinical. If you’re talking floor tiles, texture is a must. It sounds like common sense, but many buyers are still seduced by lovely shiny tiles and then end up skidding all over the place every time the floor’s wet. Generally, the rougher the texture, the less slippery the tile when wet. When it comes to wall tiles, shiny tiles look chic and sleek and reflect light, making them a good option when in small or dark spaces. On the other hand, embossed tiles can be a smart way of adding interest to your walls and reducing starkness, especially if your tiles are in only one or two colours. CONSIDER COLOURFUL OR PATTERNED BATHROOM TILES It goes without saying that white is by far the most popular colour choice for bathroom tiles. White tiles are fresh-looking, classic, and reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room. If you’re worried about the room looking too stark add dark or patterned towels and other accessories to introduce splashes of colour while retaining the clean minimalist look. Colourful or patterned tiles can be used to add detail here and there, or make a bold statement when used to cover the entire wall. They tend to look best contrasted with simpler bathroom fixtures. SMALLER BATHROOMS LOOK BETTER WITH SMALLER TILES Generally, the more compact the bathroom the smaller the tiles should be, especially if there’s not much space between your sink, toilet, and tub. Smaller tiles will also require less cutting to fit around objects and make for a more flowing feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom, large tiles give a sleek look with less exposed grouting in between. Borders or panels of smaller tiles can look fantastic in complimentary or contrasting colours.
