MOMENTS OF MAGIC “I was just trying to get my songs across and trying to be taken seriously,” says James Morrison of when he first started out. “But when you’re young, and a man, and doing pop music, that can be very hard.” Kristan J Caryl finds out more.

T

hings are different now. It is 15 years since his huge debut single “You Give Me Something” became a smash hit across Europe, Australia and even as far away as Japan and Iran. Public perception has changed over the course of many more platinum singles, 500 live shows around the world and a BRIT Award for Best British Male Solo Artist. “These days, even guys come up to me and say they like my stuff, which is really cool,” he beams in a soft Cornish accent. “In the beginning, it was just screaming girls who weren’t even listening to the music. But over time, it feels like I’ve earned some respect.” And rightly so, because these days he is a slick showman who is a perfect between-song host as well as having perfected his live playing style and amassed

a collection of singles that very much define an ear. “I’ve had to learn that aspect of it,” he says. “Learn how to talk about the songs with the crowd and not be so painfully shy. I didn’t really take that into consideration in the beginning because it isn’t ever something that came naturally to me.”

“I’ve got loads of tunes already that are locked down. I’m keen to keep going and I’m sure I’ll tease them at some of my gigs this summer” Photo: Parri Thomas

While Morrison is young to be serving up his Greatest Hits album, now also seems the perfect time to do so: many of the tracks on it he has redone with the fresh perspective, new knowledge, and the extra musical understanding he has picked up since they were first recorded. “Generally I wanted to just have more light, more air in them and less overproduction,” he explains. “And just get the songs across in the most direct way I can.” Of course, live music is always the most direct way to get your message across, and few do it better than James. He has just played a packed out UK tour and soon supports Paloma Faith where he will play outdoors at Campbell Park on 17th July. “Playing live is where you create the moments of magic,” says the chatty and affable singer-songwriter. “You just go for it, you don’t really know what you’re

“You just go for it, you don’t really know what you’re going to do, and that’s what makes it so exciting. Especially playing before someone like Paloma”

going to do, and that’s what makes it so exciting. Especially playing before someone like Paloma. She is such a great singer, she has that big female energy, she looks great. So I’ll do a big power hour. I’ll blast it out, include as many hits as I can and get the crowd going.” James has come a long way from playing live, busking in a local pub in Newquay, Cornwall where he grew up, and practicing his guitar on the promenade overlooking the beach. But as well as being key to him learning his trade, those hours spent strumming were his escape. He has spoken before about having an unhappy childhood which was affected by poverty and the fact he was seriously ill with whooping cough and could well have died. “It’s hard to write about that sort of stuff,” he says when asked. “If it comes to me I will, but I can’t do it on demand.” What he does do is try to help people in similar situations by hosting charity gigs and auctions as often as possible, and he also recently volunteered at a food bank. “I can relate to people in that situation so it felt natural to help. It was tough to go without, and nowadays it’s even tougher, so I just wanted to do my bit. I would have wanted to know there was something like that going on when I was a kid.” Once this run of greatest hits shows is over, he is back to making new music. “I’ve got loads of tunes already that are locked down. I’m keen to keep going and I’m sure I’ll tease them at some of my gigs this summer. “ Whatever he plays, it is sure to be something special. JUNE 2022 21

Liquid Gold! Discerning drinkers in Hertfordshire are in for a treat, as the home-counties has a new premium lager – Alchemist.

A

lchemist is Hertfordshire’s new independent lager, brewed by Tring Brewery using the finest hops from the Czech Republic and Germany. Hersbrucker (DE) and Saaz (CZ) hops have been blended with quality malt and authentic lager yeast for notes of gentle spice and sweet grain. Pouring from the taps in pubs and bars across Herts, Beds and Bucks, Alchemist has been brewed by Tring Brewery, who use local legend to inspire their beers’ namesake and imagery. Jared Ward, PR at Tring Brewery explains: “Alchemist Lager takes its’ name and design from the story of Dr John Kellerman, a scientist and practising magician who honed his talent for the dark arts in his mansion-come-laboratory in the village of Lilley, Hertfordshire! Kellerman’s mansion was supposedly converted into a highlyguarded fortress, where the doctor would perform alchemy to create heaps of gold. Once his secret got out and the fort was compromised, The Alchemist escaped through his skills of disappearance and vanished, along with his secret methods, forevermore.“ Though Tring Brewery have produced real ale for three decades, Alchemist marks their first foray into the world of lager. Andrew Jackson, Tring Brewery director, said: “The timing just felt right. Long, hot days are approaching, and drinkers everywhere are more discerning as to what they enjoy. Long associated with mass-production and globalisation, lager has faced a bad reputation in the UK, a rep that is starting to change. Consumers are more discerning than ever. Many are becoming aware that lager is just another beer style, perfected by master artisans in Germany, the Czech Republic, and now, the world over. Authentic continental lagers were our inspiration. We’re looking to offer drinkers an independent product crafted with passion, brewed in the home-counties with the finest ingredients and processes. We’re excited to launch Alchemist, to us, it’s liquid gold!” Alchemist Lager is available now in many local outlets, all of which can be found on Tring Brewery’s website www.tringbrewery.co.uk/alchemist-lager/, where cases of bottles can be ordered for nationwide delivery. Cheers to Alchemist Lager... liquid gold!

June recipe & kitchen news

H

ere comes summer! – With the arrival of June brings the excitement and anticipation of balmy days ahead. It is also the time to celebrate the English Strawberry season – although the supermarkets have featured them on their shelves for a while June is the month when the Pick your own Farm starts to flourish. What better way than to spend a summer’s day out strawberry picking for delicious berries. Look out for Sweet Eve and Eve Delight, high in natural sugar with a perfumed aroma, English Rose for its orange zest flavour and Jubilee for a good all-rounder.

The peak season runs from June to July but if there is good weather the English strawberry can still be very much enjoyed up until the end of September. The best thing about strawberries is that they can be made into a spectacular dessert, eaten straight from the punnet for picnics or just simply with cream or ice cream. Or as here if you have a glut of the strawberries from the garden can be transformed into a smooth, refreshing sorbet served with macerated strawberries and a vanilla cream– a perfect cooling dessert for a warm day. At the restaurant we serve this delicious sorbet accompanied with a star anise financier.

LEASEHOLDS ARE CHANGING

But how will it affect you? B P Collins’ residential property team explains.

W

hat is a leasehold property? Owning a long leasehold interest in a property means you own the building, but not the land on which it stands, for a fixed term period of several years. A leasehold property is a depreciating asset which is ultimately returned to the freeholder or landlord when the term of the lease ends. Leaseholders are also bound by contractual terms contained within the lease, such as the requirement to pay a service charge, ground rent and seek the freeholder’s or landlord’s permission to carry out any major works to the property. Owing a leasehold property can be very expensive in the long run, particularly if it is shared ownership or acquired via Help to Buy, plus costs can also mount up considerably when you sell a leasehold property. What impact does the Government’s Ground Rent Bill have on leaseholds? The Ground Rent Bill received Royal Assent in February 2022 with the Act coming into force in June, which means that the government’s objective of capping ground rents in new, long residential leases to a ‘peppercorn’ rent of zero is being implemented this year. As such, an existing lease will not be caught by the provisions of the Bill and the leaseholder’s ground rent under that lease will not change even after the Bill becomes law. A lease extension or deed of variation, however, is usually as a matter of law deemed to be a surrender of the existing lease and grant of a new lease of the same property. It is therefore anticipated that most lease extensions after the Act comes into force will impose peppercorn ground rents. How much could homeowners save? Thousands of pounds in reduced ground rent over the term of an existing lease could be saved, especially if a lease’s current ground rent is uncapped and subject to escalation (which can lead to unintended statutory consequences affecting the 38 JUNE 2022

value and marketability of leasehold properties). A premium would, however, still be payable to the landlord to compensate it for its loss of rent and any marriage value. For B P Collins’ full article on leaseholds, you can sign up to receive the next edition of its complimentary magazine, Insight by emailing, enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk

THE DETAILS BP Collins For buyers of new properties, the reforms are likely to be a welcome change as it should stop them paying excessive ground rents. The proposed changes do not, however, help existing leaseholders with high or escalating ground rents. DEALING WITH BUSINESS INTERESTS ON DIVORCE

Kathryn Ainsworth, Head of Private Family Law, Machins Solicitors tells us more.

W

hen dealing with the finances upon divorce, all assets need to be taken into account including any business interests. It can be particularly contentious when this includes interests in family businesses which have spanned generations. Business interests are likely to be regarded as matrimonial assets and therefore there are circumstances when their value can be added to the matrimonial pot. Business Valuations It is usual for a business to be valued by an independent accountant or a forensic accountant in large or more complex cases. The exceptions when a valuation is unlikely to be required are: • if the business is particularly small, meaning the cost of a valuation would not be proportionate; • the business is an income producing mechanism for one spouse or the family and holds little to no assets; • the business interest is as a sole trader; or • the business interest is a minority shareholding in a quoted company. The appropriate method of valuation can vary depending upon the circumstances; an earnings based valuation is the most commonly used valuation technique when valuing ongoing trading companies, however a net asset valuation may be more suitable for a property investment company. Such valuations are treated as a guide rather than definitive absolutes. There can be tax implications for transferring shares or extracting money from a business to fund a 42 JUNE 2022

settlement and a tax expert should be instructed to advise the most tax efficient method of raising capital from a business. Court Powers The Court has a wide range of powers to order the sale of a business or the transfer of shares from one person to another, subject to any restrictions in a shareholders agreement. Courts however prefer to leave businesses intact and it is possible for both spouses to remain involved with the business if there is a large degree of cooperation, although a new shareholders agreement or partnership agreement would likely be required. A spouse with less involvement in the business may be able to offset their business interest by receiving a greater share of the other assets, such as the home, investments and pensions. It is less likely the Court would order a business to be sold if there is third party involvement with the business. Another consideration may be the structure and nature of the business i.e. whether it is a limited company, partnership or a company registered in a different jurisdiction. Protecting Business Interests If you have an interest in a business, and are getting married, it is worth asking your fiancé to sign a pre-nuptial agreement. A pre-nuptial agreement can protect your business in the event of a divorce, provided the overall agreement is fair and meets the other person’s needs.

PHILIP ASTLES, KIDD RAPINET’S NEW SENIOR PARTNER Kidd Rapinet LLP is delighted to announce the elevation of Philip Astles to senior partner

P

hilip is the fourth senior partner of the firm, following in the footsteps of Michael Rapinet, one of Kidd Rapinet’s founding fathers; Andy Lewis, under whom Philip worked for many years in the firm’s Slough office; and Paul Taylor. Philip takes over the reins from Paul, who is relinquishing the top job after heading the firm for 22 years to focus on his clients. Philip is no stranger to challenges. He joined Kidd Rapinet back in 1998, as one of Paul Taylor’s trainees, qualifying in 2000 and making partner in just under three years.

“I’m looking forward to this next chapter with the Kidd Rapinet team”, confirms Philip. As I said to them last week “Let’s go, there’s still plenty to do and no room for complacency.”

Since that time, he has worked tirelessly as a commercial solicitor securing many corporate deals for SMEs to multi-national firms in a variety of market sectors. Philip took over as managing partner of the Slough office in 2008 and has been instrumental in strengthening the Kidd Rapinet brand in recent years in both traditional marketing activities and, more recently, in the digital arena. As a direct result, Kidd Rapinet has a comprehensive, informative, and attractive website with many news articles, free downloads, a strong social media activity balanced with local events, as well as community and charity support across all six offices. 44 JUNE 2022

“I am super confident that Philip will prove to be an inspirational senior partner and will continue to maintain the high standards of service and brand reputation that Kidd Rapinet has built over the past sixty-five years. I wish him every possible success in the role” adds Paul Taylor “I’m looking forward to this next chapter with the Kidd Rapinet team”, confirms Philip Astles. As I said to them last week “Let’s go, there’s still plenty to do and no room for complacency.” Philip will continue to be supported by the firms twenty-four partners across six offices: Slough, Maidenhead, High Wycombe, Aylesbury, Farnham, and Canary Wharf. kiddrapinet.co.uk

SMARTER RENT

M

elinda – lives abroad and so can’t be here in person to act for herself. What were you hoping to achieve? Melinda asked Smarter Rent to manage her flat in Richmond as a short term serviced accommodation. “I wanted to keep my flat, to maintain a toe-hold in London, but wanted to sweat my assets whilst I choose to live elsewhere.” The rental income allows Melinda to keep up her active lifestyle as she skis or sails (depending on the season) in Europe, but equally offers her a Pied-à-terre for visiting her family or local chums back in Blighty. She explains that instead of a traditional pension, she mostly invested in properties and she now relies on that rental income in her retirement. Why did you choose Smarter Rent? “My original agents were only able to offer traditional longer term lets (at £2,500 a month) which meant I couldn’t use the flat when I popped over. One agent did shorter lets, but they were proposing a 25% charge on the rental income with an additional range of expenses that add up to £500-£600 for every letting!” These charges were for inventory and administrative costs which seemed

to be in addition to the fees she was already paying. “It’s one thing if you are having lets of a year or more, but it really didn’t make sense for the shorter term serviced accommodation model that I needed.” She explained. Melinda was also aware that some of the services offered by the agents were outsourced – “Smarter Rent have a much more personal and less algorithmic approach!” she laughed – ah yes, I smiled, the advantage of having a very small office. “You also bring in £4,500 a month in rental with lower fees. I know I am safe in your hands.” So, Melinda, what has your experience been working with Smarter Rent? “It’s been very good!” she explained from Switzerland where she has a chalet. “I can trust Smarter Rent to make the right decisions and the extra income you have achieved helps finance my lifestyle whilst retaining flexibility. I feel the security of knowing I have a bolt hole but can’t afford to just leave the asset standing.”

ith the spotlight on summer brides, you might be wondering how to get the perfect beauty look for your big day. Whether you’ve gone for a Bridgerton-inspired wedding gown, rented a lovely little lacy number or chosen a contemporary two-piece bridal suit, you want the very best make-up for the happiest of occasions. Here’s what you need to consider, according to the pros…

THE LASTING POWER OF PRIMER “A wedding is a long marathon of a day, so to keep the make-up in place use a primer or long-wear base,” says Gia Mills, celebrity make-up artist and founder of Skin In Motion (skininmotion.com). “Same for the eyes – an eye primer will ensure any shadow doesn’t shift. If you have an early afternoon church service, you’ll undoubtedly be wearing the make-up until the final dance, so prep well and you’ll avoid any make-up fails.” 25 2 NEE 2 2 00 2222 6 8 J JUUN

Sam Wylie-Harris speaks to experts to discover the best make-up tips for a bride-to-be.

APPLY YOUR MAKE-UP WISELY When it comes to applying make-up, the right lighting is everything. “Hotel rooms can be terrible for natural light, so make sure you check your make-up in natural light” before heading to the event, advises Mills. When it comes to skin make-up, pick your poison – either go for a lighter foundation with a matt finish, which Kerry Hatton, bridal make-up artist at Mii Cosmetics (miicosmetics.com) suggests is “great for all your photography” – or fuller coverage that “lasts all day”.

FOCUS ON YOUR EYES Melanie Barrese, head of content for Illamasqua (illamasqua.com) and Eyeko (eyeko.co.uk), says: “Most brides like to focus on their eyes, and often this can involve soft brown or warm pink washes of colour – nothing too harsh, like black.” Barrese also recommends wearing fake lashes, “As this will really open up your eyes and pay off in the photos”. She continues: “If this intimidates you

Small bags might be on-trend right now, but don’t go too tiny – you might want space for a few products, to tackle any skin issues and maintain your make-up. “Keep a concealer in your bag for quick touch-ups,” advises Mills. “Ideally choose a sweat-proof formula that will last the duration of the wedding, taking you from day to the night – especially if you’re enjoying a workout on the dance floor.” Barrese adds: “I would recommend making sure you have a pressed powder and lip product with you throughout the day, as these are must-haves for touch-ups. It’s really important to ensure before you take any pictures that the area around your nostrils is matte, even if the rest of your skin is dewy – as this area can look sweaty in pictures.”

USE A PROFESSIONAL – IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT While it’s not available to everyone, if you have the budget, Mills recommends hiring a professional make-up artist. TEEN MENTAL HEALTH

Helping Parents Support Their Teens by Kate Kirrane, co-founder of Seed Wellness (www.seedwellness.co.uk)

S

ince Covid, stats show that teens struggling with poor mental health such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, self-harm and worse, are at an all-time high. Yet, with public services such as CAHMS overstretched and under-resourced, waiting lists are long, leaving parents to cope alone. At Seed, we work closely with parents and teens to help them better navigate challenging times. See below some top tips from our experts: Caroline Chambers, Family Counsellor “The most important thing between a parent and their teen is effective communication. Yet, most teenagers are reluctant to communicate… and more so with their parents! • Listen – This means not immediately responding to what they say with what you think, or what they should do, or what they aren’t doing right! Pause before replying and repeat back what they have said to show them they have been heard. • Be curious but ask the right questions - teens are not yet capable of good judgement. So asking ‘why’ they did something frustrates them. Instead, ask ‘What’, ‘When’ and ‘Who With’ rather than ‘Why’. • Meaning behind Behaviour - Bad behaviour from

58 JUNE 2022

teens is often a symptom of something else going on which is worrying them or they can’t make sense of. Rather than telling them off or nagging them, look beyond the symptoms to the root cause. Helen Evans, Teen Counsellor: • Learn to ‘unhook’ from our teenagers’ stress – do not get drawn in when they are aggressive & stroppy – they are sitting the exams, not us! And they won’t thank you for making it about you! • Good sleep hygiene!! Lack of sleep leads to anxiety, depression, poor immunity, accidents, poor judgements, poor memory, slower reactions, poor concentration…. They need 9 hours minimum! • Have clear boundaries and routines – I suggest a ‘no phones in the bedroom at night’ policy that you adopt early which also means they will they sleep better. Deb Milligan, Psychotherapist & Hypnotherapist: • The teenage brain is still in development. So, when emotions are running high, they’re not able to think clearly. Helping them understand this makes it less painful when they make mistakes. • Keep calm! – Let heated situations calm down before attempting to resolve upsets. Luckily, techniques and products have come a long way since the 2000s. By Prudence Wade.

NOUGHTIES BEAUTY TRENDS

T

he Noughties are back in a big way. Y2K-inspired trends have been taking over fashion for a while now – from low-rise jeans to velour tracksuits – and now our hair and make-up looks are getting the 2000s treatment. No7 (no7beauty.co.uk) make-up ambassador Joy Adenuga believes TikTok plays a big part in this. “There are lots of trends from the past coming back and being made popular again by creators,” she says. “Another reason is popular celebrities from the Noughties being in the spotlight right now. Great examples are Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears.” Both women were Noughties icons, and continue to make headlines today – JLo for her engagement to Ben Affleck (who she was last engaged to in 2002), and Spears, who recently announced her pregnancy on Instagram. Luckily, techniques and technology have come a long way since the Noughties. We’ve now got more knowledge and better products, meaning we can update these retro looks, so they’re fresher and more elegant…

your hair stuck in sticky, overly glossed lips, but the Noughties trend is making a comeback – albeit with a bit more finesse. To get the look, Adenuga says: “Start with slightly overlining your lip line with a shade two tones darker, apply a nude lipstick with ultrareflective sparkles and pack on your favourite clear lip gloss.”

PHOEBE RESIN STONE HAIR CLIPS PACK OF TWO, £12.50, AVAILABLE FROM OLIVER BONAS

Baby braids All you need to nail this look is a comb and several small, clear elastic bands, says Natalia Vera, expert stylist at at Live True London (livetruelondon. com). “First, start by deciding how many braids you’d like to have, and go ahead and section out these pieces of hair evenly around your head, before tying the rest of the hair out of the way with a clip or bobble,” explains Vera. “A top tip to achieve an effortless look, is to not create tension when braiding, to keep the plaits nice and loose. Simply braid and secure each one mid-way down the hair lengths with a clear elastic.”

Frosted eyeshadow “This tends to go south if you’re not careful,” warns Adenuga – but you could have delicately

frosted eyes a la Doja Cat or Hailey Bieber, with a bit of effort. “The key to acing a frosted eyeshadow colour is warming up the crease areas with warm shades, and applying your favourite frosted shade to the middle of the lid,” Adenuga explains. “You can start the application of the frosted shade with your ring fingers, to control how opaque you want the colour, before switching to an eye brush.”

Clips, clips and more clips Remember loading up your hair with as many clips as possible? That trend is well and truly back, judging by Emma Watson’s standout beauty look on the 2022 Bafta red carpet. If you want to recreate the style, Vera says: “Split hair into a middle parting and smooth down the hair on your scalp, removing any bumps from the top. Pull the front sections of your hair tight to your head and back towards the ears, before applying four to eight clips each side. “Insert the clips one by one and evenly on each side to frame the face, or place them in scattered and different directions for a funkier look. Finish with some salt spray to the ends of the hair, to add a beach-waved but natural effect.”

This is yet another TikTok trend that has made its way onto our Instagram feeds – and eventually the red carpet. It’s part of the ‘indie sleaze’ trend – the renaissance of grungy looks, a la Kate Moss in the Noughties. We can also thank actor Julia Fox for popularising this style, as she seems to have an obsession with black eyeliner – done to various degrees of maximalism. From a make-up point of view, it’s all about smudgy black eyeliner. This is Adenuga’s favourite of the 2000s trends, “And actually the easiest to achieve”. She says: “All you need is an eye khol pencil – black might be too intense for some, I’d advise starting with a brown shade. “Draw a line (you don’t need to be neat) as close to your lashes as you can. Grab a smudger eye brush, run that through the line you just created and boom, smudgy black eyeliner achieved.”

Megan Thee Stallion

Spiky buns “This trending TikTok style doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, thanks to its versatility and suitability for all hair types, textures and lengths,” says Vera. “To create Y2K spikey buns, start by ensuring hair is fully detangled, and separate any hair at the front that you wish to keep outside of the bun. If you wish to incorporate a middle parting, comb this in before proceeding. Group the rest of your hair together and twist into a bun, before securing with a hair tie, either at the nape of your neck for a chic low spiky bun, or higher up the head to mirror Billie Eilish’s go-to look. “The key is to keep the last couple of inches of your hair ends out of the bun, facing upwards. To achieve this nostalgic style, the messier the better, so use the end of a comb to pull out some loose hair tendrils around the front of your face to frame the look. Finish with a spritz of hairspray to set in place. You can even add some mousse or gel to the spiky ends, to draw them out and define even further.”

SUMMER READY FEET

It’s sandal season, so it’s time to get your toes back in action. By Prudence Wade.

C

hances are, you haven’t given your feet much thought over the winter months – most of us tend to stuff them into slippers or socks as soon as we’re out of the shower, and continue on with our lives. It’s the easiest thing to do – but it also means that when sandal season looms, we’re hit with the familiar panic. What kind of state are our feet in? What will we have to do to get them looking presentable? “There’s an element of ‘out of sight, out of mind’,” says Emma Price, podiatrist and cofounder of PodiPedia.co.uk. “If you don’t have any foot pain, you don’t necessarily think of your feet. It’s not until you get some nice weather and put sandals or flip-flops on, and then go: ‘Oh, what’s that?!’” For Price, feet can “absolutely” affect your confidence. “Personally, it makes me feel great knowing that I’ve got good looking feet,” she says. It’s time to start showing some love to get our soles ready for summer… What might happen to your feet during winter? If you haven’t been regularly buffing and moisturising your feet during the colder months, they’re probably looking a bit rough and ready – but deeper problems could have developed as well. “There’s the potential for fungal infections if they’re not dried properly before you put your socks on,” explains Price. “If your footwear is quite tight, you can get some rubbing – sometimes you can get calluses or corns developing on the sides of your feet, but normally they’re painful.

26 2 NEE 2 2 00 2212 4 2 J JUUN

Corns don’t generally silently appear – you know about them.” Fungal nail infections could be another issue. Price says: “You might not notice them if you’ve got old nail varnish on and you don’t realise there’s something growing under there.” Your feet might also be in desperate need of moisturisation, as they can “dry out with central heating”, says Price. All these are good reasons to keep up a solid footcare routine all year round. If you develop any serious issues, you should see a podiatrist, but if you’re suffering from sad and dry feet, there are things you can do at home. How can you start prepping now? For Price, the first port of call is to remove any

feet, but if you had a dodgy looking tooth or your tooth was going a bit brown or yellow, you’d get yourself straight to the dentist. You wouldn’t paint your tooth and carry on – that’s obviously a bit of a silly example, but it’s true – that’s effectively what you’re doing.” She recommends annual or biannual check-ups with a podiatrist, like you do with a dentist. “I’m very much about prevention being better than a cure,” Price adds, emphasising that podiatrists can spot early signs of serious medical conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

nail polish you might be wearing. “Lots of people just leave the varnish on, so get that off with a really good low acetone or no acetone nail varnish remover,” she says. Next, invest in Price’s favourite tool: a foot file. “You need to file your feet if you have any hard skin or dryness – file before you go into the shower,” she says. Once you’ve had your shower or bath, “Dry your feet thoroughly and put on a really good, urea-based emollient. Urea is a chemical in good foot creams that basically softens the skin for you and helps it stay moist – it’s different to a normal moisturising lotion.” It’s also important keep your toenails trimmed, preferably with “a really good nail file”. This will help keep your nails shaped and short, she says, “and if you do it regularly – once or twice a week – you can keep those looking really great”. The podiatrist prefers a file to nippers or clippers, because it stops you creating edges. “Often an ingrown nail will happen because you have poor cutting technique: you’ve left a 90 degree angle or a spike, or you’ve cut down the side. With a file, you can’t really create problems for yourself.” Price describes a foot file and nail file as her “weapons of choice for public consumption. It keeps you out of hot water and it’s much safer for the general public.” She recommends giving your feet a “quick zhuzh” with both tools at least twice a week.

What mistakes should we be watching out for? She says motorised rotation sanding devices are fine if used appropriately, but doesn’t recommend using one to attack the thick calluses on your feet. Podiatrists use a scalpel blade designed to cut through skin, “and we can take off huge amounts of skin for you – you wouldn’t believe the difference, it’s amazing”. She also isn’t so keen on pumice stones, as “they can be quite rough”, she says. “The classic is people having a bath and then they attack their foot with a pumice stone – and rarely can that actually be helpful. I think they rip your skin, when what you want is a file that’s going to produce – it’s a bit gross, actually – a really fine powder.”

RETURN OF THE RED LIP:

how to find your perfect shade Make-up artists share their pro tips to help you choose the best rouge. By Katie Wright

STILA STAY ALL DAY LIQUID LIPSTICK IN BESO, £17

R

A neutral ‘true’ red, this matte liquid lipstick suits both warm and cool undertones.

ed lipstick is back. Not just on our lips – thanks to lockdown easing meaning we’re embracing bold make-up again – but on the SS21 catwalks, from bright matte pouts at Hermes and Balmain, to deliciously dark red wine hues at Rodarte and Valentino. “We saw a lot of red on the runway this season, which wasn’t surprising, as it’s such a glorious pick me up,” says Chanel make-up artist Zoe Taylor. “Personally, I love a red lip. It’s modern yet classic and, paired with a slick of mascara, is the ultimate in Parisian chic.” Sascha Jackson, Stila UK lead pro make-up artist, says scarlet is the ultimate powerhouse shade: “You put on that red lipstick and you feel powerful, you feel like you can take on the world. And it’s a great way of looking really put together – you can even wear quite a casual outfit, then you put on this red lipstick and all of a sudden, you’re dressed up.” The great thing about red lipstick, Taylor says, is that “it suits everyone. It’s just a matter of finding your perfect shade.” Here, our experts run down everything you need to consider when deciding on the right hue for you…

Skin tone “Understanding the undertone of your skin is key to choosing the best red for you,” Taylor says. Specifically, you need to work out whether you have cool or warm undertones. Cool undertones mean “you have more blue veins in your skin, you tend to burn easily in the sun, and you tend to suit pinkier shades,” says Jackson. “You would be better off to go for what’s called a blue-based red. That’s reds with an almost berry or pinkish tone. They will really suit those lovely lighter skin tones.” Those with warmer undertones “tend to suit more corals and oranges – you love those summer 16 98 0 J JU UN NE E 2200221 2

shades,” Jackson continues. “Especially if you’re olive skinned, you tend to suit orange-based red lipsticks – those reds with a slight burnt orange to them.” She adds: “I find that darker skin tones have the best of both. Both blue-based and orange-based suit warm and cool undertones.”

Teeth “When testing out reds, you’ll notice how they seem to change the colour of your teeth,” says Taylor, so if you want your pearly whites to shine, you’re better steering clear of orangey reds. “I find the blue-based reds tend to make your

teeth look a lot whiter,” Jackson says. “So that’s one thing to note for the coffee drinkers!”

Hair colour “Understanding the undertones of your hair is also very important. This, once again, comes down to whether your hair is cool or warm in colour,” Taylor says. “Cool colours are going to suit raspberry reds and warm colours will suit more tangerine reds.”

Texture While matte lips ruled the runways this season, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to the great velvet versus gloss debate. “Go with the textures that make you feel comfortable and that you know you’re comfortable wearing – there’s no point wearing a make-up product that you don’t like the feel of,” says Jackson. “However, that being said, because a red lip is so bold and striking, I love it in a matte finish. It looks very polished, and it prevents the pigment from moving around. Glosses are very malleable, and can move around your lips when you’re talking, eating and drinking.”

“Go with the textures that make you feel comfortable and that you know you’re comfortable wearing” How to create the perfect crisp lip? Taylor says: “Prepping your lips will help your red lipstick to glide on smoother, so remember to scrub, oil and balm, before you choose and apply your lip colour.”

LL TIGERS NATURAL & VEGAN MATTE LIPSTICK 886 ORANGE RED, £21.80, SUPERDRUG

Try before you buy

A rich orange-red, this matte liquid lipstick suits warmer undertones best.

“Obviously at the moment, trying on lipstick is a bit tricky when you’re shopping,” says Jackson. But there are now hundreds of digital try-on tools on beauty brand websites, that let you upload a photo or use your camera to ‘apply’ a lipstick live and see if it suits. See a red somewhere that you think would look luscious on your lips? With Chanel’s new Lipscanner app, you can point your camera at any swatch and the app will suggest a lipstick shade to match.

FAMILY HACKS:

invest in furniture that grows with your little ones

T

he thing that comes top of any family’s checklist is furniture that grows with their little ones and as family needs develop. After all, why buy a piece of furniture that can’t be used after a few weeks, let alone months? With items such as bedside sleepers, cots and changing stations having a traditionally short shelflife (and that’s not taking into account playroom furniture that becomes unloved and replaced by the new and shiny or beds that outgrow evolving needs), life can be made easier for families with a very simple change in approach; by opting for furniture that has longevity and versatility. Take nursery and kids’ bedroom furniture brand, Boori, for instance. Many of their products are godsends for families, and it’s all because they have been designed and built to last and grow with your children (whether as a baby, toddler, child or teenager). One of their products that successfully ticks

87 66 JJUUNNE E2 02202 2 2

this list is their Neat Bedside Sleeper (which we are thankful to say launched earlier this year). Bedside sleepers can only be used in the first six months of a baby’s life, which is also when it is recommended that babies sleep close by to parents until. Naturally, this means bedside sleepers become redundant for families very quickly. However, Boori’s bedside sleeper can be used as a bedside sleeper, standalone bassinet and children’s desk later on too. It’s not just nursery furniture that Boori excels in, but kids’ bedroom furniture as well. One Boori product we’re loving right now is their Natty Single Loft Bed. This bed starts life as a loft bed but can easily transform into a bunk bed or single bed with separate conversion kits. This is especially great for evolving families, or families with children that get excited by change! It’s not hard to see why over 1 million families have relied on Boori ever since they were established in Sydney in 1993! boori.com/uk

5 Sofas That Will Change The Way You Live & Lounge On The Rocks Sofa by Edra

Peanut B Sofa

F

ew moments are more sacred to the modern aesthete than the after-dinner flop — the joyous, somewhat giddy moment that comes when we finally retire from our duties for the day. And no matter what your wind-down ritual might look like, we believe there is no finer platform for indulging it than the modern designer sofa — an island of unparalleled tranquillity. And the space on which every Sunday should unfold. Here, we’ve collated seven of the finest examples; each of which promises to change the way you live and lounge.

ON THE ROCKS SOFA BY EDRA

Peanut B Sofa

Conseta Sofa by COR

9 07 8J UJNUEN2E0 2 22 0 2 2

In the universe of Harry Potter, it’s the wand that chooses the wizard — just as for many homeowners, it’s the lounge that dictates the size of the sofa. But what if you didn’t have to be bound by the trappings of architecture? What if, instead, there was a living lounger that could go wherever it sought fit? It’s the premise on which the beautiful On The Rocks sofa was built. Thanks to a series of sumptuous islands, it’s free to move in any direction — be it throughout the centre of a room, or tracing a snug perimeter. The backrest — more of a hug than a formal element — can also be artfully moved and shaped, in service of more deep-seated lounging possibilities. In the past, some critics have gone so far as to call it a deconstructed sofa. And yet we feel that would be to rob it of the supreme craftsmanship that has gone into every module. Imbued with

GellyFoam padding, non-slip cushions and bespoke upholstery it is, instead, a soft landscape for living, that encourages you to sit, roll or snuggle as desired.

HARPER BY FLEXFORM When it comes to keeping track of the flotsam and jetsam of lounge life, some aesthetes choose to invest in a cushion basket — usually crafted from wood, rattan or the like. Other more seasoned stylists, meanwhile, know to look for a sofa that can do both. It’s from this do-it-all tradition that we find the Harper Sofa from Flexform. A design replete with sartorial details, including leather-bound armrests equipped with storage for remotes, magazines and throws. In doing away with the need for additional storage, it makes way for what really matters in the living room — a generous space in which to just be.

SORIANA SOFA BY CASSINA Soriana is a lost and found style from the early 1970s. Low-slung and cosy, its generous padding and aesthetic detailing conspires to create the kind of carefully contrived casualness once only found in Parisian apartments. “At the beginning, the workers did not understand that the leather covering was not supposed to be taut,” explains designer Tobia Scarpa. “Rather it needed to appear like a soft, creased fabric curled around this soft mass and held together by a sort of giant metal spring.” Like many of the other styles from the 70s, it sits low to ground — a welcoming gesture that allows loved ones to come together without fuss or fanfare.

Conseta Sofa by COR

CONSETA SOFA BY COR Some sofas like to stay still, striving for iconicity over growth. The Conseta collection manages both; a statuesque silhouette that moves with the times thanks to the constant addition of new modules, armrests and cushions. Originally designed in the sixties, it was a breakthrough moment for German design house COR - a cosy milestone of sorts. Today, it can be customised from the fabric down to the filling, gaining new gravitas in each rendition, and growing or contracting over the course of its lifetime. Could your home use a stylish upgrade this season? Then why not swing by our showroom for the full seated experience where you’ll find all five of these sofas on display?

It is, however, a bonafide bestseller — the crowning jewel of the Bonaldo lounge collection and the latest sumptuous style to swan into our showroom. With a VIP list of discerning customers, including Lord Alan Sugar and Duncan Bannatyne, Crown Pavilions is often described by those in the know as the best in the business. Crown Pavilion’s CEO Luke Dejahang attributes this to what is known within the company as the Crown Marque of Excellence. “We only use the finest sustainably sourced materials and craftsmen to create what we consider to be the World’s finest garden rooms. Underpinning everything is our meticulous attention to detail and five-star customer service.”

Luxury Gazebos – Year round alfresco cooking, dining, lounging & entertaining A luxury wooden gazebo from Crown Pavilions creates a unique space in heart of your garden where you can entertain friends, cook, serve sumptuous suppers and party long into the night. Or, if you prefer the quieter life, a blissful space where you can relax over breakfast, laze away a summer’s afternoon or simply sit back and enjoy a good book. There are 14 models to choose from, for gardens of every size and shape. They all come with dining and lounging furniture and luxurious soft furnishings as standard. The marine grade canvas side blinds offer protection and flexibility – they can be dropped down and zipped together during inclement weather and rolled them up in the sunshine. You can also customise your cushion and blind colours to taste, add heating and even upgrade with a wood-fired oven for larger models. Garden Rooms – Insulated garden offices, gyms, bars, cinemas, teenage dens and more… A Crown Pavilions insulated garden room, built to residential standards is for those seeking additional living space. However, unlike a bricks and mortar extension a garden room can be built in just a few short weeks and in many cases planning

permission is not required. With many still working from home, garden offices are still in high demand. A Crown Pavilions luxury garden room can be used for so much more than work though. “Garden bars, cinemas and gyms are three of our most popular projects. We’re also seeing more customers ask for multifunctional space”, adds Luke Dejahang. The use of traditional timber building methods sets Crown Pavilions apart. Their buildings are built on site with 6’x2’ and 4’x2’ timber studs, joists and structural steels where necessary. The company also holds a TRADA certification from the Timber Research and Development Association which means everything is compliant and correct – from the timber sizing, insulation and joist spacing through to ventilation, fixtures and fittings. The result is a residential grade living space on par with the rest of your home. Origin Pools

The ultimate home improvement

T

ransforming your home with a bespoke pool house is the ultimate in home improvement. It allows you to create a place of relaxation, wellness and fun all in the comfort of your own home. Origin knows that a swimming pool can not only add value to your home but to your home life as well and there are many decisions to be made along the way. Attention to detail and precise planning is crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house as the process is quite unlike any other building project and requires more than just finding a competent builder. It’s important to understand that indoor pools require specialist design in three major areas: the pool chamber, the building structure and the management of the pool building environment

(heating, dehumidification and ventilation). All of these specialisms should be integrated into a consolidated design from the start, to avoid disruptive, complicated and potentially costly alterations after your pool house has been built. This is where Origin comes in. Simply put, they do it all. Building swimming pools requires a holistic approach with all the key elements working together from the beginning. Origin eliminates the need to employ separate companies by managing the whole process for you, from concept to completion. Access to a pool right on your doorstep means it’s easy to swim and exercise every day in the privacy and safety of your own home. They’ve been building award-winning swimming pools for over 40 years and in that time have successfully completed thousands of pools

and pool houses to a wide range of specifications. Swimming has many benefits, as well as the obvious, it improves quality of sleep and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. Origin believes owning a pool is about more than the pool itself: by adding a spa, sauna or yoga room your swimming pool and pool house could be a centre of wellness. If you’re looking to increase family time, your pool house could become a new social hub for everyone to enjoy by adding a gym, lounge area or even a bar. Whilst jumping in can seem daunting, making the decision can bring measurable benefits. A new pool from Origin provides new ways of having fun and spending precious time together as a family. Whatever you’re looking to achieve, Origin has experienced it all and is available to help you create your dream pool, managing every stage from start to finish, giving you the confidence and freedom to enjoy finally swimming in your own home. Origin’s experts can discuss requirements, guide you through the options and produce a fully costed proposal and design allowing you to undertake the ultimate home improvement so you can finally achieve the perfect work-life balance.

AN INDUSTRIAL VIBE

NEW COLLECTION FROM MODISH LIVING

A

true fusion of function and form, industrial design celebrates practicality and style and the new Ironbridge Industrial collection from Modish Living embodies all these qualities. Crafted in 100% FSC certified reclaimed wood the Ironbridge Industrial collection celebrates the imperfect and embraces signs of rugged wear and tear, whilst the unfinished aesthetic adds a distinct rustic vibe. Nothing is concealed or hidden with good industrial design and each piece in the Ironbridge Industrial collection exposes all the individual character, history and natural flawed beauty of genuine reclaimed wood. Whether that’s the Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood Sideboard with the knots and grains showcased or the Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood Dining Table with its black steel spider leg contrasting against the rustic reclaimed wood, this collection is as unique as they come.

Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood Dining Table With an eye-catching central solid star-shaped black steel leg, this industrial dining table marries together the two key components that typify the industrial style - the beautiful combination of rugged and grainy textures contrasting with a smooth metal finish. Ironbridge Industrial Extending Reclaimed Wood Dining Table There’s a lot going on with this extendable dining table. Full of character, history, narrative and practicality it will elevate the industrial mood in your dining room in an instance. Available in two sizes, the smooth concealed butterfly mechanism makes quick and light work of extending the table, whilst the exposed black powder-coated metal bolts, X shaped legs and central bar add authenticity to this industrial piece. Pair the matching Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood Dining Bench with the dining tables for a cohesive industrial look. Ironbridge Industrial Reclaimed Wood Sideboard A hybrid of industrial and rustic, this sideboard is part industrial, part farmhouse. The eye-catching block pattern of the reclaimed wood gives the
