TradiTional HarvesT evenT Residents of South Buckinghamshire speak fondly about local attraction Chiltern Open Air Museum. This ‘hidden gem’, recently awarded a Bronze award by ‘Visit England’ and declared the third best small attraction in the country. The Museum is home to over thirty rescued historic buildings spanning more than two thousand years of history, from a reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse to a 1940s Prefab from Amersham which recalls wonderful memories in older visitors. These unique buildings, which have all been rescued from demolition or decay by the Museum’s dedicated volunteers and staff, also include a lovely Victorian Toll House from High Wycombe, a ‘tin chapel’ Mission Room from Henton and a Victorian forge from Garston.

Set in 45 acres of beautiful Chilterns landscape, the Museum also includes a working Victorian farm and aims to preserve traditional skills and machinery including a lovingly-restored 1947 Ransomes Simms & Jeffries threshing machine and a team of heavy horses, both of which take their place amongst the farm’s working equipment. The farm has been used for filming in popular television dramas Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife and Midsomer Murders, and the Museum’s forge was recently used as the scene of a murder in ITV’s The Suspicions of Mr Whicher! The Museum is currently busy preparing for its ‘Traditional

19TH – 20TH OCTOBER 2014

Harvest’ event on 18th – 19th October, when visitors can discover the fascinating traditions of our farming history. This ever-popular annual event provides a unique opportunity to explore the sights, sounds and smells of harvest past, with the Museum’s restored threshing machine working hard to process the year’s rye crop – as long as the rain holds off! Clydesdale Harvey and young Shires West Winds Samuel and West Winds Joshua will be putting their shoulders to the plough to prepare the arable fields for next season’s crops, and the Museum’s dedicated team of farming volunteers will be demonstrating traditional techniques and implements. A volunteer blacksmith will be plying his trade in Garston Forge,

and Henton Chapel will be home to a beautiful display of harvest produce, most of which has been grown in the Museum’s beautiful historic gardens. Costumed re-enactors ‘The Mannered Mob’ will bring several of the buildings to life, and will be delighted to talk to visitors about life in the past while folk singers and musicians will also be visiting the Museum to entertain all who pass with traditional tunes. Children can try their hands at some harvest crafts such as making a saltdough harvest decoration or a leaf crown, as well as playing with traditional toys, dressing-up clothes and beautifully-crafted scale models of some of the Museum’s buildings. Kids will love playing in the heritage adventure playground,

inspired by the Museum’s historic buildings: they can hide in the Anderson shelter, slide out of the Shepherd’s hut and climb the Toll House! A range of activity packs is also available, free of charge, to use during your visit with something to keep even the youngest of visitors amused. A trip around the fields and woodland to discover the local wildlife (thriving in this unspoilt Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and to meet the Museum’s livestock including the friendly horses, rare-breed Oxford Down sheep, silver Dorking chickens and even the elusive farm cats, will allow little ones to work off some steam as parents stroll through the woods and meadows, marvelling at the changing leaves and enjoying the crisp Autumn air. Why not end your visit by treating yourselves to

a hot drink and a slice of cake in the Museum’s restored Tea Room, originally a Furniture Factory from High Wycombe? If you haven’t visited this charming local Museum before, the Harvest Festival is a wonderful opportunity to explore our heritage and treat the family to an unforgettable day out. Visitors who enjoy the Harvest Festival may also be interested in the Museum’s unique range of historically-themed Experience Days, which includes a Blacksmith’s Experience, Heavy Horses Experience and the newly-launched Historic Baking experience, all of which take place within the Museum’s beautiful buildings and grounds. festival of words IF YOU’VE EVER ATTENDED ONE OF CHORLEYWOOD’S LITERARY FESTIVALS YOU’LL KNOW THAT THE LINE-UP OF AUTHORS IS ALWAYS PRETTY SPECTACULAR, BUT THIS YEAR THE ORGANISERS HAVE EXCELLED THEMSELVES WITH SOME ROYAL CONNECTIONS. The event opens on Monday 10th November with none other than Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, and concludes on Sunday 16th with royal biographer Penny Junor who has written an extraordinarily revealing book about Prince Harry. And, if that wasn’t enough, the headline act is the majestic queen of the screen, actor Sheila Hancock! This is the ninth Chorleywood Litfest and, according to a customer, the best thing about the festival is that you don’t have to go on the M25 to get there, you can eat a meal before you set out, meet your friends there, have a drink afterwards, sleep in your own bed and you don’t need to go to London, Cheltenham or Hay. But really the best thing is that you get a chance to get up close and personal 12

with some of the best authors in the world. And we can guarantee, this year, there will be someone to entice you as there is everything from best-selling novelists and renowned pillars of the medical community to a multi award winning poet and a travel guru. If history is your thing then there are five events you mustn’t miss. Charles Spencer, will be discussing his fourth history book, Killers of the King - The Men Who Dared to Execute Charles I. Then there is the ever popular Thomas Cromwell…. author Tracy Borman reveals The Untold Story of Henry v111’s Most Faithful Servant….apparently he was quite the party animal! An area of history not known to most will be presented by two authors who have teamed up to discuss an epic clash in history-

the story of the Ottoman threat to Europe from 1400 to 1700- three hundred years of fear and loathing. James Heneage’s book, The Walls of Byzantium, is set in the decades before the fall of Constantinople when the Ottoman Turks were at the gates of Christian Europe. Jason Goodwin’s book, The Baklava Club, is set in Ottoman Istanbul. Then there is the astounding story of The Ark Before Noah. One day a man brought in a tablet to the British Museum asking what it might be. Irving Finkel, the Assistant Keeper of Ancient Mesopotamian scripts set about translating it and discovered it was a cuneiform tablet with a blueprint for the Ark. Written a millennium and a half before Jewish scholars wrote the Book of Genesis,

more than 4000 years ago, it is one of the most important archaeological finds ever made. If you like your history mixed with fiction then you’ll enjoy Miss Carter’s War. The redoubtable Sheila Hancock has written several autobiographical books but this time she has written a novel based in Britain in 1945 as the country recovers from the Second World War. Miss Carter has lost her parents, worked for the Special Operations Executive, and returned to England to become an English teacher with a mission – to fight social injustice, prevent war and educate her students. From the peace marches of the fifties to the rise of Margaret Thatcher, Sheila Hancock has created a portrait of Britain through the eyes of a very singular woman. One of the most famous visiting authors is Jodi Picoult who will be at the beautiful Tudor Chenies Manor for a literary lunch where she will reveal details of her forthcoming book, Leaving Time. This tells the story of 13-year-old Jenna Metcalf who uses her mother’s diaries to unlock the mystery behind her sudden disappearance… sounds like yet another best seller! Chorleywood Bookshop is also very excited about the arrival of Louise Doughty

as she is the author of Apple Tree Yard, which was one of the shops best-selling books of the year. It is a novel of mystery, adultery, sex, murder and deception, a psychological thriller as well as a courtroom drama. Not only was this a Richard and Judy Summer Read it was also highly praised by Hilary Mantell and all the staff at the shop! If your literary tastes are more attuned to fact than fiction, then you may enjoy Henry Marsh’s brutally honest and highly personalised account as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons. In his book, Do No Harm, he describes the fierce joy of operating, the profoundly moving triumphs, the harrowing disasters, the haunting regrets and the moments of black humour that characterise his life. Another medic who finds laughter a good way to deal with tension is Professor Tanya Byron, a clinical psychologist who reveals in her new book The Skeleton Cupboard, the frightening and challenging moments that all mental health staff deal with in a darkly humorous way. Best known for her work as a child therapist on television shows, like Little Angels, Byron also broadcasts for BBC’s Newsnight, is a presenter on Radio 4 and writes a weekly column in The Times. The Litfest also has something for those

who like to explore and travel to interesting destinations. Published to coincide with Bradt’s 40th anniversary, The Irresponsible Traveller is a light but edgy collection of tourist tales. Bradt has built a reputation over 40 years for publishing books covering the road less travelled. This collection celebrates exactly the sort of writing and storytelling about ‘unusual’ travel experiences that has helped to establish the company as a firm favourite amongst adventurous travellers. Featuring contributions from Hilary Bradt, Michael Palin, Ben Fogle and Jonathan Scott, the title is a perfect book to dip in and out of. If you have a love of poetry then you’ll probably already be familiar with Wendy Cope, a mullti award winning contemporary English poet who will be at the festival to discuss her new collection of published and unpublished prose. Reflecting on a wide range of subjects from addictions to weddings, Cope proves that she’s a master of the one-liner as well as the sonnet! An unmissAble evening of HAlloween fun! 31ST OCTOBER 2014 Why not bring the family for an unforgettable evening of safe, spooky fun for all ages in the unique, atmospheric setting of Chiltern Open Air Museum’s historic buildings, meadows and woods? The hugely-popular ‘Halloween Spectacular’ event returns to Chiltern Open Air Museum in Chalfont St Giles, Bucks, on 31st October and it’s going to be bigger and even better this year! After a day’s half-term fun, the Museum will close at 4 pm on Friday 31st October, to allow staff and volunteers to add finishing touches to their decorations and special effects and don their spooky costumes before re-opening at 6 pm. With over 1000 visitors expected, and more than 60 staff and volunteers involved, this is truly the highlight of the Museum’s fantastic annual events programme! A fun-packed evening of activities will include trick-or-treating as you explore the Museum’s outstanding collection of rescued historic buildings. Themed craft activities will keep the kids amused and create plenty of spooky souvenirs to take home, and children can have their faces painted or make their very own candle (small additional charges apply for face painting and candle-making). Children (and adults!) are encouraged to dress up for the event in Halloween costume, with prizes for the best! You can visit an eerie witch’s cottage, or drop in for scary storytelling around the fire in a unique reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse before marvelling at a spectacular fire-breathing 14

display on the Village Green. You’ll meet a ghostly blacksmith plying his trade in the Museum’s working Victorian forge, and the very bravest of visitors can explore a spooky walk through the woods, encountering fearsome creatures in the dark forests. You might even see the fierce Wild Hunt as they ride through the Museum! With paths and trees eerily lit by lanterns and candles, and many of the Museum’s buildings illuminated through the night by fire and lantern-light, this is truly a unique way to explore the beautiful surroundings of Chiltern Open Air Museum and to experience the Museum’s rescued historic buildings. Hot food and drinks will be available for purchase on the Village Green, so you can enjoy a warming cup of mulled apple juice or bottle of premium local beer from Vale Brewery. Why not sample some home-made soup from the Museum’s café, or treat yourself to a delicious burger or hot dog from local

award-winning Orchard View Farm. Visitor Experience Manager Siân Hammerton-Fraser said, “Halloween is our favourite event of the year, with friendly competition between our staff and volunteers to create the spookiest exhibit. We love coming up with new monsters and witches to spook our guests, and amazing creative ideas for family activities to keep the kids amused! The

Museum really comes alive in the twilight, and it’s great for visitors to see our historic buildings so atmospherically lit up.” You can also join in the fun by taking part in our pumpkin competition: to enter, simply drop your carved pumpkin off at the Museum by the morning of Friday 31st October, where it will be placed in our Pumpkin Gallery, and prizes will be awarded for the most creative!

The event starts at 6pm and continues until 9pm, with last admission at 7.30pm. Advance booking is strongly recommended to beat the queues: www.halloweencoam.eventbrite.co.uk

TOWN FARM ART SHOW IN CHEDDINGTON ONE WEEKEND ONLY • FRIDAY 28 - SUNDAY 30 NOVEMBER On the last weekend of November Christine Bass will be hosting the Town Farm Art show again. Building on the success of previous years, there will be 12 artists at this popular event, displaying their work throughout Christine’s house and garden. The artists are: Christine Bass (painter), Sophie Bass (illustration), Louise Brainwood (textiles), Susan Day (porcelain), Jessica Ecott (glass), Kirsteen Holuj (ceramics), James Ort (sculpture),Anja Penger-Onyett (ceramics), Yannick Perichon (stonecarving), Mick Randall, (woodcraft), Mick Waterhouse (Woodcarving) and Kate Wilkinson ( Jewellery) New for this year are four artists showing in the garden, including Jessica Ecott and James Ort. Jessica Ecott works in glass, her glass work is all kiln-formed, and she uses fused glass to make sculptures for the garden and wall-mounted pieces for interiors. She also makes three dimensional sculptures in cast glass and mixed materials – mostly wood and metal. James Ort loves experimenting with different mediums but predominantly works in ceramic and wire. His latest creations often combine the two mediums using a technique that he has developed himself. His style of working in clay is loose and expressive and these qualities bring life and 16

predominantly plant forms. These are then interpreted in a strong graphic style and printed

will show her contemporary textile designs. These are printed using a range of techniques onto natural fabrics and used to produce a vibrant collection of home and gift items, including cushions, purses and notebooks. Designs are inspired by Scandinavian and 50s design and imagery is taken from natural sources,

either by hand using screen or block printing techniques or digitally in a new collection of professionally printed fabrics. Christine Bass paints contemporary landscapes and

still lifes characterized by strong lines and shapes, flattened planes and the use of vibrant colour. She grew up in Trinidad and the bright light and vivid colours of the tropics still exert an influence in her paintings. She draws inspiration from the Buckinghamshire countryside: the gentle beauty of the Chiltern Hills, views from the Ridgeway, the patterns of fields scored by furrows and bounded by hedgerows, the bare trees of winter, the colours of crops and the seasons. Again, Susan Day’s porcelain lamps and tea light holders will be on display. New designs include those based on textures from found objects. Susan commented “I love taking part in the Town Farm Art Show. Christine makes all the artists and the visitors so welcome. I’m really looking forward to this year with even more artists and Belgian waffles!” Town Farm supports Rennie Grove Hospice Care collecting donations for refreshments. This festive art show has lots of exciting ideas for hand-crafted, high quality Christmas gifts. plus mulled wine, home baking and freshly made Belgian waffles!

Party in

Style toP tiPs for throWing a fabulous Party

Planning a sPecial Party? Whether it’s an 18th, 21st, 40th or 50th, We’ve got it covered With our toP Party Planning tiPs. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

BON APPETIT

Date & Venue: Pick a date, then decide what kind of party you want to have and for how many guests, then choose a venue to reflect your style and budget. There are so many venue options available from marquees and tipi tents in your garden to unique/historic venues and hotels. Some venues will have a style of their own, whereas others are a blank canvas for you to create whatever vision you have for your party, so choose carefully.

Food: With so many wonderful types and styles of food, decide what you’d like to offer your guests from the outset as this will also impact the type of venue you choose e.g. canapés and drinks reception, with bowl food or sit down meal for all your guests. Drinks: Hiring in a bar and professional bar staff adds a real focal point to an event. Having a cocktail list for guests to choose from is a great talking point and definitely helps to get the party going in style!

THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL

Planning: Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to plan your party, as advance planning is crucial to the success of your event and also ensures you can secure all the party ingredients to make your party one to remember. Invites: Start to build excitement about your event from the minute you send out your invites. These can be tailored to your theme and designed independently or taken from a stock collection online. Decoration & Theme: Some of the best parties are themed, so have a think about what you enjoy, whether it’s a certain type of music, cult films, places that inspire you. The theme can be subtly weaved through all elements of the party, starting with the invites and continuing through to the décor and food. If you’re having a marquee party and opt for a theme, such as James Bond, you can have great fun incorporating the theme into every element of your event from the food & drink (martini’s shaken not stirred) to lighting and table decoration (scattered diamonds – fake of course!) whilst achieving an element of class, creating a party that Bond himself would be proud to attend. 20

OCTOBER2014

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION

Lighting: Lighting plays a huge party in creating the right atmosphere and ambience for an event. Shapes, patterns and logos can be projected onto a floor or wall for an added effect. Photos: Book a photographer to capture your guests enjoying themselves or hire in a photo booth for a bit of fun. Entertainment: Think about what music/entertainment you might like to entertain your guests. If hiring a DJ, provide a sample play list to give them an indication of the type of music you’d like or book a band to get everyone up on the dancefloor and bopping the night away. ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT –

Your Guests – the essential ingredient for a great party who will help you to have a night to remember and are there to capture memories of your special party.

A great party is one that has something unique and a real talking point, so whether its clever lighting effects (crystal chandeliers hanging from trees in the garden) to amusing sound effects (animal noises from the bushes as guests arrived at a Hint of Africa Party) to themed food (shortbread revolvers at a James Bond Party) its worth putting in the extra effort and attention to detail to create something wonderful. Parties don’t need to be stressful. With expert help and advice, Papillon Events can manage the planning process from start to finish as well as being there on the night to oversee all the preparations and running of the night – leaving you free to mingle with your guests and enjoy yourself. TradiTional ChrisTmas fun aT ChilTern open air museum 29TH – 20TH NOVEMBER 2014

Celebrate the traditions of Christmas past with a visit to Chiltern Open Air Museum in Chalfont St Giles, Bucks. This unique site, home to over thirty rescued historic buildings set in 45 acres of beautiful Chilterns landscape, aims to preserve not only the buildings but the traditions of our past. With the help of a team of dedicated local volunteers, each year the Museum hosts a festive Christmas event which helps bring a traditional chiltern Christmas to life. The Museum will be decorated for the festive season, with the older buildings decked with holly and ivy gathered from the Museum’s woods by a team of dedicated volunteers. Illuminated by candles and cosy firelight, these warm and welcoming buildings are wonderful to explore on a cold winter’s day. The more modern parts of the Museum 22

OCTOBER2014

are not left out, with the 1940s Prefab (rescued from the Finch Lane Estate in Amersham; dismantled during November 1997 and rebuilt at the Museum in 1993) celebrating a restrained wartime Christmas enlivened by a simply-decorated tree and make-do-and-mend decorations. Local folk singers will be visiting the Museum and their traditional songs and music, accompanied by simple guitar, fiddle or accordion, are always enjoyed by visitors. Several of the buildings, including the picturesque Victorian Toll House and newly-rebuilt Haddenham Croft Cottage, will be brought to life by costumed re-enactors ‘The Mannered Mob’, who will be making their own Christmas preparations including cooking historic foods. You can even enjoy a nostalgic magic lantern

show! The children will be kept amused with simple Christmas crafts, making their own gift tags to take home, decorating pinecone Christmas trees and even helping to decorate the Museum’s own Christmas tree. They can write a letter to Father Christmas, and even the youngest visitors can drop in to thatched Leagrave Cottage to have a go at making their very own spiced Christmas biscuits, which will be baked in the restored 1920s cooking range for them to enjoy. And, of course, no Christmas event would be complete without a

visit to Father Christmas himself, so why not bring the children to meet him in person, give him their letter and collect a small traditional gift to take home? Bring the family and, well wrapped up against the cold, enjoy exploring Chiltern Open Air Museum’s beautiful buildings, woodland and meadows before treating yourself to a delicious slice of cake or a mince pie and a warming drink. Even the dog is welcome (as long as he’s kept on a short lead, to avoid disturbing the Museum’s horses, sheep, cows and chickens)!

The ‘Traditional Chilterns Christmas’ event will take place on 29th – 20th November 2014, between 10 am and 4 pm. Please note that there is a small additional charge of £3 to meet Father Christmas.

CHRIS LEE’S LTD HAS BEEN GOING UP IN THE WORLD WELL, A SMALL HILL IN BUCKS ANYWAY!

Having made an exploratory visit to the popular Kop Hill Climb event at Princes Risborough in September 2013, Beaconsfield-based Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialist Chris Lee’s Ltd decided to become a sponsor of this year’s meeting. Not a company to do things by halves, it took the ‘Gold’ option, with which came a display plot of no less than 30 x 15 metres – ie the same size as the BMW one and bigger than Citroën’s!

30

OCTOBER2014

How to fill such a grand space had the directors’ grey matter whirring for a while, but they came up with the answers in the end - helped by the fact that, by their very nature, Rolls-Royces and Bentleys tend to be quite large vehicles! The focal point of the resulting display was a fully logoed hospitality unit, complete with Chris Lee’s flags flying in the breeze. The supporting exhibits included fine representatives of the: Phantom VI, Silver Cloud III Continental, R-Type, Bentley Special and Arnage T. For the more technically-inquisitive there was a ‘Barn Find’ Silver Cloud III that’s in line for a ground-up restoration and a fully refurbished example of Rolls-Royce’s ubiquitous 6.75-litre V8 engine. Kids made a bee-line for the firm’s unique little Rolls-Royce-grilled Daihatsu advertising van. Another aspect of the sponsorship package was the chance to parade cars on the hill and the Chris Lee’s team wowed the crowds with the Bentley Special and the

mighty Phantom VI. A competition was run throughout the weekend, the winners of which got to ride in the cars and the Phantom (piloted by Chris Lee himself, resplendent in Chauffeur’s hat) is thought to have created a hill record by having seven passengers on board at one stage; not to mention a lady and her pet dog on another. Said Chris: ‘We had a great weekend, during which we certainly increased awareness for the company and what it does. It was a very pleasant way of helping to entertain the local public and raise money for charity. We very much hope to return again next September.” Chris Lee’s Ltd, 38 London End, Old Beaconsfield, Bucks HP9 2JH. Tel: 01753 888364. www.chrislees.co.uk

ROYAL ROUTE

2014

FOR 2014 BONHAMS VETERAN CAR RUN

For only the second time in more than half a century, hundreds of veteran cars will start this year’s annual 60-mile adventure from London to Brighton by driving down The Mall, London’s ‘Red Carpet Drive.’

A

lthough a regular part of the route in earlier years, The Mall has only been used once since 1962 – that was in 1996 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original Emancipation Run.

This year the pioneering horseless carriages, all built before 1905, will leave Hyde Park as normal before passing under Wellington Arch and heading down Constitution Hill towards Buckingham Palace. After rounding the Victoria Memorial in front of the Palace, the cars will drive along The Mall’s red asphalt before turning right into Horse Guards Road and then left towards Parliament Square, Big Ben and Westminster Bridge. A total of 442 entries – up from 389 in 2013 – have been received by the Royal Automobile Club for the 2014 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. As tradition dictates it takes place, come rain or shine, on the first Sunday of November (2 November), with the first cars leaving at sunrise, this year 06:56. The oldest car on the event is a c.1888 Truchutet, a 4hp open tonneau. The entry list includes some of pioneering motoring most famous names, such as Benz, Daimler, Vauxhall, Peugeot and Renault, while the entries includes steam-powered cars, electric cars, three-wheelers as well as petrol-powered four-wheelers.

38

OCTOBER2014

Regarded as the world’s longest running motoring event, the Run celebrates the original ‘capital-to-coast’ Emancipation Run. This was held on 14 November 1896, and marked the Locomotives on the Highway Act, which raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 to 14mph and abolished the need for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag. The first re-enactment of the Emancipation Run took place in 1927 and it has been held every year since, barring the war years and 1947 when petrol was rationed. Although famously not a race, there is a competitive element to this year’s Run with a Regularity Time Trial during the event. Participants will try to match their nominated ‘bogey’ time set for a 13-mile section between Crawley and Burgess Hill. The entire event is free to view for spectators, who line the whole length of the route to cheer on the hardy ‘automobilists’. The Run is the highlight of a long weekend of motoring nostalgia in the capital, much of it free to view. Other events include the popular free Regent Street Motor Show (Saturday 1st November) and the annual Bonhams Veteran Car auction (Friday 31st October). REGENT STREET

REVS UP FOR MOTOR SHOW The UK’s largest free-to-view motoring extravaganza London’s Regent Street will be packed with cars and motorbikes... but, for once however, they will all be on public display rather than bumper-to-bumper en-route to their next destination. From Piccadilly Circus to Oxford Circus, the capital’s world-famous shopping street will be closed to through traffic so it can, once again, host the annual Regent Street Motor Show. Last year, a record 400,000 visitors were able to pore over a huge variety of mouth-watering machinery embracing everything from motoring’s pioneers to the latest supercars. This year, there will be hundreds of cars on display in the middle of the temporarily traffic free street including performance cars, family cars, eco cars and racing cars. There will also be 100 veteran cars on display, all ready for the annual Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which starts from nearby Hyde Park the next day. The veterans, all built before 1905, will be taking part in the prestigious EFG International Concours d’Elegance and hoping to take overall honours ahead of the 60-mile trial to the coast. First held in 2005, the Regent Street Motor Show attracts a large number of manufacturers keen to display their newest products to an audience made up of enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. “The Regent Street Motor Show is now recognised as a great day out for the family, whether they are car enthusiasts or just shoppers” said Annie Walker, Director of the Regent Street Association. “The huge variety of exhibits perfectly complements Regent Street, with an array of vehicles ranging from the horseless carriages to the cars of today all set in one of the world’s most prominent shopping streets. It adds a completely new dimension to a visit to the best shopping street in the West End. And best of all, it’s free!” For more details visit www.regentstreetmotorshow.com 42

Victoria’s Secret FA S H I O N S H OW H E A D I N G T O L O N D O N

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is one of the most prestigious, and glamourous annual fashion shows in the world, and is to take place in London for the first time this December. ozens of international supermodels will strut their stuff at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show at Earls Court in December, the US brand have announced. The event, which will be broadcast to 192 countries, has only ever once before ventured outside America when it transferred to Cannes during the film festival in 2000.

D

Speaking at the company’s European flagship store on New Bond Street, Victoria’s Secret president and chief marketing officer Ed Razek said it had wanted to hold the show in London since 1998. But Mr Razek, accompanied by two of the US brand’s “angels” Adriana Lima and Candice Swanepoel, said this year was now the right time because the brand now has a “critical mass” in the UK with six stores and plans to open more. Although he said the models were not booked yet, he revealed that he has already asked British model of the moment Cara Delevingne to “save the date”. He added: “Cara actually was on the runway the last two years. I’ll let you in on a secret, I saw Cara and told her it was coming to London and told her to save the date, she was excited.” The show is a lavish event featuring elaborate costumed lingerie, a variety of musical acts by leading entertainers, and intricate set designs within the show. Each year, the show attracts hundreds of celebrities and entertainers, 48

and features twenty to forty of the world’s top fashion models as part of the fashion show. Past Angels have included Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes, Candice Swanepoel and Miranda Kerr. Previous year’s musical acts have included Kanye West, Maroon 5, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Akon, Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Seal, Justin Timberlake, The Spice Girls, Ricky Martin, Sting, will.i.am, Mary J. Blige and Destiny’s Child. Guests at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show are seated among a star-studded audience which has previously included celebrities such as Jay-Z, Beyonce, Orlando Bloom, Elton John, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Longoria, Denzel Washington, P. Diddy, Lenny Kravitz and Serena Williams. The “fashion, fantasy and entertainment” spectacle will be directed by Britain’s Hamish Hamilton, who oversaw the televising of the opening and closing ceremonies for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will be one of the last events hosted by Earls Court, which is due to be demolished next year. www.victoriassecret.co.uk www.cornucopia-events.co.uk/victorias-secret-fashion-show

Perennial English flowers, hand-sketched in the famous gardens of Kew ew,, Sissinghurst and Great Dixter, inspire the new season prints. The delphinium appears as a grand monochromatic design on printed silk and lace. For an intricately woven jacquard this pretty floral is also contrasted with the uniformity of garden trellis. The colour palette works with White and Cream accented with Black and earthy Khaki, while rich Delphinium Blue offers a pop of colour. In true Mulberry style, prettiness is presented with an edge: dresses and skirts are paired with contemporary leather pieces, some with laser-cut perforations, and luxurious but casual lurex wool cardigans. Sleeves rolled up, our Mulberry girl’s style is inspired by the eccentricities of the English lady gardener. Skirts and pinafores with practical pockets nod to a gardener working in an idyllic country garden but ready for anything, tools in hand, unafraid of a bit of mud! The Mulberry Girl is wearing sandals inspired by classic gardening clogs. These practical and charming shoes are given a beautiful and fashion-forward makeover for this season’s Gardening Sandals, with soles carved from solid wood and criss-crossed leather straps. Natural Vachetta Leather is favoured for its natural and rustic finish; the perfect complement to the lavish prints and fabrics in the collection. Of course, no English country look can be complete without a Wellie, but this is no ordinary rubber boot. The upper of the new Mulberry Garden Wellie features the wild flower design, woven into a rich metallic jacquard.

Finding basis in Henri Rousseau’s fantasy jungle world paintings and Henri Matisse’s whimsical leaf cut outs, Sophia metamorphoses leopard print, jungle flowers and plants with her own signature use of colour and print. Acid and techno colour palettes, coupled with Sophia’s own love of heavy rhythms and underground music, led her to invoke the hedonistic world of a 90s jungle rave. The collection is inspired by rave-wear: feminine clubcolour camo prints, fruity colours mixed with Aztec prints, girly-warrior embellishments and graffiti tags adorn caged booties, platforms and knee-padded thigh-high boots as well as speech bubble bags and fruity backpacks. Q&A

WIth the aWaRD WINNING DeNtISt

DR SHAMEEK POPAT

What a lovely summer it was and the weather change has come as a shock but I for one am grateful to the lovely summer we had. I went to the annual Dental Showcase at London Excel last week and have to say the future is bright and exciting for Dentistry with all the new exciting new technology coming out which makes the patient journey more easier and pleasant. This month we talk to Dr Kaplesh Bavisha who is a Specialist Periodontist at Rosebank Dental Practice in Chorleywood. Q. WHAT IS A PERIODONTIST AND WHY WOULD I GET REFERRED TO ONE? A. Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of gum (periodontal) disease. They are also known as gum specialists. Your dentist has decided that your gums require this special care. By referring you to a periodontist, your dentist is showing a strong commitment to ensuring the best possible dental care for you. To help you understand why specialist treatment might be needed, and how your teeth can be saved, this question & answers will tell you about some of the most frequently asked questions about gum treatment. Q. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF GUM DISEASE? A. The signs of gum disease are bleeding, swollen gums, bad breath, gum recession, loose teeth, and gaps appearing between teeth, pus and eventual tooth loss. Gum disease is not always painful and therefore often goes unnoticed and undiagnosed. It may only become evident at an advanced stage, after loss of bone and gum. Q. WHAT CAUSES GUM DISEASE? A. Bacteria (plaque), growing under the gums around your teeth, lead to gum disease. If left long enough, the plaque may solidify and form hard infected deposits on the tooth called calculus (tartar). If the infection persists then the gums detach from the tooth to form a pocket, with loss of

jawbone and the ligaments that anchor the tooth to the jawbone. Unless treated, the tooth will become loose; you may end up losing the tooth. Q. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF GUM TREATMENT? CAN GUM DISEASE BE CURED? A. The main purpose of treating your gums is to remove infection and prevent further gum and bone damage. Techniques are available to regenerate lost gum and bone around diseased teeth. Q. WHAT DOES GUM TREATMENT INVOLVE? HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO TREAT NOW OR CAN I WAIT? A. Most treatment first involves scaling & deep cleaning of infected roots (placing a thin instrument between the gum and tooth). This is commonly referred to as non-surgical treatment. Your gums can be numbed for this, if necessary for your comfort. Many areas in your mouth can be expected to respond favourably. It is best to stop the disease process with treatment sooner rather than later. This helps to prevent further irreversible loss of your gums & bone. The number of visits needed depends on how much disease you have. It is also essential to help you with your plaque control. Q. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MY TREATMENT? WILL I BE FREE FROM MORE GUM DISEASE? A. Good plaque control at home and regular gum

checkups are essential to keep gum health. Once you have demonstrated good plaque control and your tissues have responded favourably, you should return to your dentist for continued general dental health care maintenance. Q. WHAT CAN BE DONE IF I HAVE ADVANCED GUM DISEASE? A. Sometimes periodontal surgery is needed to get the best tissue response (i.e. no bleeding, gum reattachment). This is particularly the case where there has been advanced bone loss. Periodontal surgery involves numbing your gums and gently lifting them a bit so that we can reach the deeper parts of the roots to clean and remove toxins. Before we can proceed with this type of treatment, a high standard of plaque control is essential. Q. WHAT CAN BE DONE IF I HAVE GUM DISEASE AROUND A DENTAL IMPLANT? (ALSO CALLED PERI-IMPLANTITIS) A. If you have gum disease around a dental implant you need to get specialist help quickly, as bones can dissolve rapidly. Gum disease can occur around a dental implant for a variety of reasons. The Periodontist carefully assesses each situation and will discuss with you the best way to treat the infection. Q. WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR GUM RECESSION, GUMMY SMILES OR UNEVEN GUM LINES? A. Some types of gum recession can be treated by taking gum tissue, usually from the roof of your mouth and placing it over the recession. Special techniques ensure that the healing period is not painful. This, and other cosmetic concerns such as gummy smiles and gum lines, can be discussed in detail at your consultation. It will be important to be clear about the causes of the condition (which may include gum disease) before deciding on any action. Thank you Dr Bavisha for taking the time to talk to our readers.

TOP 10 TIPS TO HELP YOUR KIDS EAT MORE HEALTHILY n modern times we are becoming increasingly aware of the shortcomings of the foods we are feeding our children. Surveys show that children and teenagers are eating higher levels of salt, sugar, and saturated fat than government guidelines recommend, and are failing to reach the five-a-day target for fruit and vegetable portions. This means that they are potentially missing out on vital nutrients that contribute to optimum development.

I

So, in practical terms, what can parents do to ensure their children develop healthy eating habits? Here are some tips to follow when considering your children and their nutrition: Eat with your children. Children learn by example — make mealtimes enjoyable: set the table, discuss the day’s events, turn off the TV and put on some music or enjoy the silence. ‘Family’ eating not only promotes home-cooked meals, it also fosters a sense of routine and encourages social interaction — all of which lead to better eating habits later in life. Make food fun! Experiment with new foods and make meals as colourful and as rich in variety as possible. We are naturally ‘turned on’ by diversity — so the more visually stimulating a meal appears, and the more textures it incorporates, the more likely your children will be to tuck in! Include two portions of vegetables in their evening meal, and provide fruit or a fruit-based pudding for dessert. This will help ensure that your children get three out of five servings of their recommended five-a-day at dinnertime Encourage your children to drink water or sugar-free diluting juice between meals. This will help prevent dehydration, which can lead to constipation and poor concentration. If you have a fussy eater in the household, don’t give up hope. Try serving the same foods in different forms — for example, people 62

OCTOBER2014

who dislike the texture of broccoli often find it more palatable in a sauce or soup. Include lean meat or another protein in every meal. This will help keep your children fuller for longer and will discourage snacking later in the day/evening. Red meat will also provide iron — which is particularly important for girls, who tend to eat less red meat of their own accord, yet whose iron needs increase as they begin menstruation. Serve oily fish twice a week (but no more). These are a rich source of omega oils, which can help keep heart and mind healthy; try salmon, fresh tuna and grilled sardines. If your children find the taste too overwhelming, add seeds to their breakfast cereals for plant versions of these oils. Pack a healthy lunchbox. ‘Disguise’ vegetables in sandwich fillings, vary the fillings, provide plain yogurt and a piece of fruit that’s easy to eat. Children can be very particular about fruit. Aim to give them small apples, bananas and grapes, which are easy to hold, peel and eat. Make sure your children eat breakfast. This will ensure a steady supply of energy to get them through the morning, help maintain attention span and discourage snacking. Fortified breakfast cereals can also be a good source of iron and B vitamins. Minerals to consider .. Two particularly important minerals for school-aged children and teenagers are calcium and iron, which help strengthen teeth and bones and prevent anaemia, poor concentration and lethargy respectively. To ensure that children’s needs are met, include milk and other dairy products, pulses, lean red meat and green leafy vegetables frequently in meals. Foods containing Vitamin C — such as orange juice — can also increase iron intake if drunk alongside iron-rich foods.

Influenza VaccInatIons THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY OF PREVENTING THE FLU IS TO GET THE INFLUENZA VACCINE EACH YEAR. THIS YEAR’S VACCINE PROTECTS AGAINST THE H1N1 STRAIN OF FLU FOR LIFE AND SWINE FLU. DR RICHARD ANGWIN FROM DOCTORNOW EXPLAINS MORE. WHAT IS FLU?

CAN I CATCH FLU FROM THE VACCINE?

Influenza (or flu), is an infection of the respiratory tract (nose, throat, airways, and lungs) caused by the influenza virus. Although flu is similar to the common cold, it begins suddenly and symptoms are much more severe than those of a cold.

The seasonal flu vaccine only contains fragments of influenza virus (of various strains) this allows the development of immunity without the risk of infection. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS FROM THE VACCINE?

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF FLU?

Symptoms usually begin with high temperature (38°c or 100°F or more), muscle aches, headache, dry cough, and weakness. Sore throat and stuffy nose may also occur. Severe symptoms including fever often last for 3-5 days. Symptoms such as cough, weakness, and fatigue may persist for weeks. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT TYPE OF FLU TO VACCINATE AGAINST?

The flu vaccine is very safe and is well tolerated. Like all medicines, flu vaccines can cause some side effects, although most people do not get them. Some people get a slight temperature and aching muscles for a couple of days afterwards and your arm may feel a bit sore where you were injected, this should disappear within a couple of days. CAN PREGNANT WOMEN HAVE THE VACCINATION?

The World Health Organisation monitors the spread of influenza viruses world-wide throughout the year. They recommend which virus strains to include in the vaccine to combat the forthcoming seasonal flu type.

Women should tell the nurse if they are pregnant or think they may be. It is now recommended that pregnant women should have the flu vaccine at any stage of their pregnancy. It is probable that the flu vaccine will be offered free from the NHS to all pregnant women.

HOW LONG WILL IT PROTECT ME?

CAN I GET A FLU JAB IF I'M BREASTFEEDING?

Because the prevalent seasonal flu strains change from year to year the flu jab will protect you from seasonal flu for about a year. You need to have a flu jab annually to make sure that you are protected against the latest strain of the virus. It is believed that the vaccine will protect you from the H1N1 strain for life.

Yes. WHEN CAN I GET THE FLU VACCINATION?

At DOCTORnow we run flu clinics and have appointments through to mid-November.

For more information about the flu vaccination or to book an appointment please call DOCTORnow on 01494 410888. 66

the truth about

CONDENSATION Condensation, damp and mould are conditions that can affect millions of English properties throughout the country, as condensation can affect new and old homes alike. Condensation has been identified as being a major cause of dampness in houses and flats in this country, especially those with poor heating and ventilation. CONDENSATION CAUSES?

It is a known fact that air inside a building contains a certain amount of water vapour, which generally increases when kettles are boiled, baths are run and if clothes are dried indoors etc. The volume of water vapour that air can hold is a function of its temperature; warm air has the capacity to hold more moisture vapour than cool air. Therefore as the air circulates, and comes into contact with surfaces cooler than itself such as walls, woodwork and windows, the water vapour to condenses, becoming liquid again. The steaming up of a bathroom mirror at shower time is a good example of how condensation droplets are formed; the mirror surface being cooler than the moisture-laden air. Whilst the condensed liquid 68

OCTOBER2014

will run-off glass or painted timber surfaces, it can unfortunately in some circumstances soak into porous surfaces such as walls and ceilings. SOME EFFECTS OF CONDENSATION

Condensed water that soaks into walls or untreated woodwork will left unchecked damage the underlying substrate of the building while simultaneously providing the perfect environment in which unpleasant and unhealthy mould colonies can grow. Many studies into the effects of inhaling mould spores unanimously agree that it causes damage to the immune system, skin rashes and respiratory disorders such as sinusitis and pneumonia. CONTROLLING THE HUMIDITY IS A SOLUTION

Humidity control is the best condensation control method and can be the first step towards ensuring that a property remains relatively free from condensation is to reduce the amount of water vapour in the air. Getting the right balance between heating and ventilation is the key to

reducing condensation, not only in bathrooms and kitchens (where the steam produced by washing or cooking poses a high level of threat), but also in other rooms where poor airflow in corners and behind furniture may cause a condensation problem. One can buy condensation control fans that reduce humidity in houses and flats, providing consistent heat recovery, air circulation and ventilation which allow air laden with excess water vapour to be safely removed. Where condensation problems have been neglected for some time and mould has already begun to form, mould remover kits can be used to fully restore the area and to guard against future mould.

condensation problems have been “ Where neglected for some time and mould has already begun to form, mould remover kits can be used to fully restore the area ” CONDENSATION ON WINDOWS AND DOORS

Condensation on windows, doors and in conservatories, along with the damage it can do to paintwork, curtains, wall coverings and window fittings, are problems sometimes encountered in all types of English buildings. Modern aids to home comfort have created rooms which are warmer but which often have less ventilation and fewer air changes. The result is that the water vapour produced by normal living activities is no longer able to escape up the chimney or through door jambs, window joints and other outlets. In certain circumstances, all these aids to comfort combine to create ideal conditions for the formation of condensation, which could form on the coldest surface within the room. This may not

necessarily be on the glazing. Rooms in houses that have particular pre-existing problems with condensation can significantly reduce the amount of condensation by replacing the windows with products that have trickle vents and/or by ensuring the new window have opening vents with a lockable night vent facility to allow airflow at all times. The Glass and Glazing Federation’s own publication about condensation on their website, entitled “Condensation, Some Causes, Some Advice” clearly makes clear that if condensation occurs on the outside of the external pane on double or triple glazed windows this is a positive sign that these thermally efficient replacement window products are in fact performing well. As the GGF article on condensation advice for home owners states “Due to recent innovations in the efficiency of double and triple glazing, along with updated requirements of building regulations and the lowering of carbon emissions, certain weather conditions may allow the formation of external condensation on energy efficient windows and doors. This is a natural phenomenon and a clear indication that the window or door is preventing heat loss from your house.” That said, condensation between the panes of glass in a double or triple glazed sealed unit means the unit has “blown” and is no longer providing the same level of thermal barrier that a modern high performance hermetically sealed unit can provide. Blown units should be replaced ASAP, particularly during the colder months, to ensure your property is insulated properly. If home owners who have fitted energy rated replacement windows still experience condensation on the inside of their windows, it usually means that their property has a particular problem with condensation that they need to address through improving the balance between heating and ventilation. More often than not, these cases are caused by insufficient ventilation within certain rooms that need addressing, as new windows and doors are designed to retain heat, so if there is not enough ventilation then condensation can build up if warm moist air is trapped with nowhere to escape to. Such condensation can be reduced by leaving open window vents to allow fresh air in, or retro-fitting trickle ventilation (although these can be expensive, ugly and defeat the object of fitting thermally efficient window products). Other solutions include adding air bricks, buying a de-humidifier or installing mechanical ventilation.

For free professional advice on replacement “A” rated thermally broken aluminium or PVCu double glazed or triple glazed windows, and how these energy saving products can help reduce internal condensation in your home, telephone 01494 854 266 to speak to an experienced Hazlemere Windows home improvement expert and/or request a no obligation quotation, or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk OCTO BER2014 69

7I N TOF THE BEST E R I O R D E S I G N T R E N DS ny proud homeowner knows that keeping your home looking its best is just as important as keeping yourself wellgroomed. Redecorating your entire property can be costly in both time and funds, but subtle nods to the latest trends in interior design keep things looking and feeling fresh.

A

Here are the key interior trends for 2014 that you may want to think about incorporating: TREND 1 TURQUOISE The pastels and beiges of previous seasons are being firmly placed to one side as 2014 sees us embracing richer jewel tones. Turquoise is undoubtedly the must-have colour of the year; if you don’t want to commit to a full feature wall in the colour, then consider adding some accessories such as cushions, throws or rugs to bring in the trend. Be sure to choose shades that are rich as opposed to more subtle tones this look is all about opulence. TREND 2 MIXING TEXTURES The fashion world saw an explosion of texture in 2013 as quilted fabrics and leather became big news. In 2014, this trend seeps into the world of interior design. Leather cushions can be mixed with corduroy throws to add interest to your sofa, or add some excitement to the bedroom with blends of fur and satin. The key is to mix your textures to create an eclectic feel. TREND 3 SHEER DRAPES If you have read our blog post on how to make apartments look bigger, then you will know that light is an essential to making the most of your space. Luckily, in 2014 one of the most fashionable things you can do for your dwelling is to open up the space around your window by replacing heavy curtains with light, sheer fabrics. Choose sheer curtains 74

OCTOBER2014

or simply pick up some fabric from a local market to drape over your curtain pole for a casual, bohemian look. TREND 4 OPULENT KITCHENS Minimalist kitchens were the height of interior fashion a few years ago, but simplicity takes a back seat in 2014 as glamour arrives on the menu. Don’t get glamour confused with gaudiness, however; this look is all about decorative, Eastern-inspired lighting, sparkling metals such as brass, and richly painted wood. Some quirky accessories such as ornate kettles and teapots add the perfect finishing touches for this trend. TREND 5 VINTAGE PIECES Tying in with the luxury that the other trends encompass, this season your home accessories should all have flair and originality. The best way to do this is by picking up vintage, one-off pieces that nobody else is likely to have A vintage armoire or chaise longue are the ultimate statement pieces, but you can also achieve the look with smaller items such as a vintage clock on the mantelpiece or some vintage movie posters. TREND 6 TRANSPARENT FURNITURE Certainly not a trend for the faint-hearted, in 2014 acrylic furniture is going to become big news in interiors. Fans of minimalism will adore the added space and light that transparent chairs and tables allows for in a room, while fashionistas will love the retro feel that it creates. If you’re not quite brave enough to go for full acrylic, then transparent legs on sofas or tables will create the same effect, though more subtly. TREND 7 HEXAGONS In 2014, things get very edgy. In fact, the more edges the better. Things that were traditionally square in shape – think tiles, tabletops and mirrors – are given a modern twist by appearing in hexagonal form.

B

athroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal. A stylish bath

CREATE A

LUXURY

OASIS

We love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home. Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams.

The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look. The shower option Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness. An appealing basin Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household. Little luxury touches Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A well-chosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

t may seem surprising sing then that, while w wee find it so easy to make some of life’s bigger decisions, it’s often the smaller choices that we spend days, w weeks eeeks or even months agonising over. Ironicallyy, according to research from swimming pool builder Origin Leisure, w wee decide that a house is for us within minutes, but can spend months deliberating whether to make smaller home improvements. We trust our instinct for big decisions, but 60 per cent of us admitted to spending more time w weighing ei eighing up the pros and cons of the finer details rather than having the confidence to go with our gut feeling.

Gary Taylor of Origin Leisure said: “Our 30 years’ experience has taught us that too much deliberating can often be counterproductivve. A swimming pool is considered a luxury for some and a necessity to others, but what hat many havve in common is that they wish they’’d d made the decision to add a pool to their home much sooner. Ourr advice is to listen to yyour our instinct and do what will make yo ou and your family happy.” 80

SplendiferouS BY ALAN McCOLM

Claire Gallagher, founder and inspirational driving force behind the name is the businesswoman, chef, creative genius and teacher behind the increasingly popular culinary operation based in the heart of Gerrard’s Cross. With an impeccable background in business, catering, cooking and restaurants Claire brought these essential ingredients plus passion and belief to create the veritable recipe for success know to all as Splendiferous. Be it a catering event in your own home to celebrate that hard earned promotion, a corporate event to instil and encourage teamwork or a series of perfectly planned practical teaching sessions on Italian cookery skills for under-twelves Claire brings her balance of experience and enthusiasm in equal portions. The path to success in each of the areas of operation remains the same, listening, planning and delivery. Customer focus is the key to all areas of business, even more so where food is at the heart of the operation where passion and personal choice intertwine. Food is personal, the world a mere menu of opportunities. Splendiferous presents that very menu, choices, opportunities and experiences, all at a level to suit the most discerning of tastes where ideas, requirements and demands are met with receptive enthusiasm, culinary knowledge, expert suggestions and a highly polished presentation to live long in the memory, thus allowing positive comments and observations to be passed on to friends, family and business acquaintances. Splendiferous is not merely Claire Gallagher, despite the tag line of Made with Love, Splendiferous, by Claire Gallagher, it is a real team effort with contributions from a variety of highly talented players with experience, imagination and, above all, passion. Juliet Canney, like Claire, is another mum but also a keen patisserie chef and cake maker with a science and commercial cooking background with the added ingredient of a sharp sense of humour, essential in a culinary environment. Chatting with Claire over a delicious coffee she added, ‘we have an experienced team of rotating chefs who are part of some of London’s finest establishments, but who support and complement our team for events and cookery classes. Our chefs have worked under such Michelin 92
