WORKING FOR A BETTER WORLD
W
ORKAID was founded in 1985 by a small group of friends as a reaction to the now famous television report by Michael Buerk on the devastating famine in Ethiopia. Their idea was simply to take unwanted tools and equipment, refurbish them, and put them in the hands of those who could make good use of them. What they discovered is that by doing this they were literally changing lives. Workaid, is committed to tackling poverty in a practical way by helping disadvantaged people, overseas and in the UK, to help themselves through practical skills training. Unwanted tools and equipment are collected from all over the UK and refurbished by a team of dedicated volunteers at the Workaid workshop in Chesham. The refurbished tools are then sent to vocational training projects where they help vulnerable and disadvantaged people to learn trade skills and start their own businesses. By working with carefully monitored projects we are able to make a difference to individuals and families, and help communities to 16

build a brighter future together. Since 1986, Workaid has helped over 100,000 people to break the cycle of poverty and build better lives for themselves and their families. We assist vocational training and self-help projects working with vulnerable and disadvantaged people in some of the world’s poorest communities, giving them the tools they need to learn a skilled trade and earn a living. An example of the kind of hope our work brings is demonstrated in the story of Beatrice. Beatrice, a physically disabled mother, lives in Zambia and is one of the women supported by an organisation called ITEZO. In the last year a total of 25 knitting machines have been sent to ITEZO by WORKAID. Beatrice has been trained to use the machines and helped to set up her own business. This is what Beatrice had to say “ My life has really changed completely and now I can look after myself and my child. WORKAID has brought us another skill”. In autumn 2010 the WORKAID SHOP was opened to sell any refurbished equipment that could not usefully be used in other projects. The shop has rapidly gained a reputation as an “Aladdins
Cave” for those looking for haberdashery, gardening or general tools. Another recent development was the opening of the WORKAID HUB. This Community Vocational Workshop, located within WORKAID’s main base in Chesham , offers a unique local service to people with mild to moderate learning difficulties. The provision of a qualified co-ordinator allows clients to engage in activities from carpentry to haberdashery, or get involved with the shop. Workaid can only function with the continued generous support of the small army of volunteers (approximately 180 at last count ), who give their time and their expertise in all areas. We are always interested to hear from people who want to help whether it is in the
workshop, the office or the shop. If you think it might be for you please either call or email us at admin@workaid.org Like every other charity WORKAID is having to work harder each year to cover costs and keep moving forward. Each container that we send abroad costs us directly on average £8,000 and we ship between eight and ten per year! Some of our funds come from grants and foundations, but we are also dependent on the generosity of private individuals. An increasingly popular way to help is through support of our “Practical Gifts “range. These gifts range in value from £10 for a Haberdashery kit, to £40 for a Mechanics Kit. For full details please have look at our website www.workaid.org or call us on 01494 775220 . “ It is not like giving food. If you give food you take away their dignity. If you give people a tool, you give them dignity, personality and pride “ (Her Excellency Mrs. Mwanaidi Sinare Maajar, High Commissioner of Tanzania ). food GLORIOUS food THE GROVE, HERTFORDSHIRE
T
he spirit of hospitality and entertainment is alive and well at The Grove in Hertfordshire, the luxury resort known as ‘London’s Country Estate’. Originally the country seat of the Earls of Clarendon, the 18th century Grade II Listed mansion now sits happily alongside the new West Wing. Inside, the design deftly acknowledges the house’s history, whilst giving guests an environment that is fun and relaxed - a compelling mix of fresh air and urban style, the buzz of the town and the peace of a garden, rural walks and world-class cuisine. Ever since it opened, local foodies and gourmets from further afield have made their way to The Grove to sample its many delectable delights. So as to give its guests plenty of choice, in style, ambience, flavour and price, The Grove has three distinctive restaurants – Colette’s, The Glasshouse and The Stables – all bound by a common passion for quality, seasonality and simplicity. Leading the way is Colette’s, the elegant à la carte restaurant in the heart of the 18th century mansion. Here there is a definite sense of occasion – with historic plasterwork mouldings, beautifully restored, antique silver and candlesticks, clean white china, dramatic modern art and contemporary cream leather chairs – but absolutely no stuffiness. There is a large terrace for al fresco drinks and eating in the summer – with views sweeping over the estate to the lake and the Grand Union Canal. At the helm is rising star Head Chef Russell Bateman. A protégé of Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing, Russell has already won 3 AA Rosettes in the 2011 AA Restaurant Guide and an entry in the 2012 Good Food Guide for Colette’s. Bringing his own creativity and flair to the food on the menu at Colette’s, Russell’s skill is to combine classic flavours with the more adventurous. His unique style of embracing diverse food and cultures while subtly mixing flavours and textures is highlighted through the use of the freshest and best ingredients – with many picked daily from The Grove’s kitchen garden in the old Walled Garden. Russell has created a series of culinary master classes, the latest ones taking place on 7 September, 9 November, 18 January and 8 March 2013. The master classes have been designed to be accessible, to improve kitchen knowledge and build confidence in creating more adventurous flavour combinations. Students will glean valuable advice from Russell, as he prepares cooks and serves a series of dishes which are easily recreated at home. Each master class will focus on a specific seasonal ingredient and will be followed by lunch and a wine tasting at Colette’s. This September, Russell also introduces three new Tasting Menus at Colette’s – Sonnet, Nature and Symphony. Priced from £75 for six courses or £125 with wine pairings, Sonnet salutes the best of British, from hand-dived Scottish scallops with peanut, radish and lime, to Cornish lamb with pea, tomato, sherry and Berkswell cheese. 18

Symphony, priced at £85 for eight courses, £135 with wine pairings, heralds the end of the summer season with carpaccio of Landes foie gras with cherries, pistachio and sour dough, wild line caught sea bass with cauliflower, cucumber, watercress, oyster and caviar and Mara de Bois strawberries, with vanilla shortbread and strawberry juices. Nature, the inspired vegetarian selection, includes slow-cooked organic egg with baked potato and truffle butter, rainbow chard with beetroot and pistachio, and Maris Piper terrine with artichoke, girolles and Berkswell cheese. Colette’s is open for dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday. The new à la carte menu, Haiku, is priced at £65 for three courses. For a lively and buzzing atmosphere, book a table at The Glasshouse, described as an “international theatre of cooking”, with its open kitchens and delicious fresh buffet offering an enticing array of British, Mediterranean and Asian dishes. Diners can watch The Grove’s chefs in action as dish after dish is freshly prepared to perfection and personal taste. When the weather is good, the large outdoor terrace overlooking the formal gardens is an ideal spot to enjoy a digestif with friends or to loose oneself in a good book with a slice of freshly baked cake and cup of coffee. The Grove has always been family-friendly and The Glasshouse especially has something delicious for everyone, from concerned parents to toddlers craving pasta and puddings. Giving families that extra incentive to indulge, children aged 12 years and under can dine with 50% off, and children under two years of age can dine for free. This September, four can enjoy lunch for the price of three at The Glasshouse, available Monday to Friday and priced at £33 per person. Open daily for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, meals at The Glasshouse range from £25 to £49 per person. The Glasshouse Bar is open daily from 11am to midnight. In the original 18th century stable block, The Stables restaurant has a wholesome and rustic feel to it – perfect for the whole family. Children are even served on special spotty Emma Bridgewater china, alongside small-sized cutlery. Head Chef Christopher Mouyassi uses the very best in seasonal ingredients to create informal yet gorgeous comfort food, which has been recently awarded an AA Rosette for innovation. His homely menus are bursting with classic British flavours including succulent steaks, wood-fired pizzas and warming autumnal pies. Designed with a New England look and feel, the restaurant opens onto a courtyard with views across to the golf course and the rolling hills beyond, providing an entirely different ambience from Colette’s and The Glasshouse. The Stables is set to be the number one choice for families to dine this September, as the restaurant offers complimentary lunch and dinner for children aged 12 and under, when dining with an adult, available Monday to Friday until 28 September. The Stables is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Stables Bar, next to the restaurant, is the perfect place to quench the thirst after a long day on the green, with golfers welcome from 7.00am. For guests who prefer the informality of light lunches and tea, the four elegant Lounges and The Library in the mansion provide peaceful hideaways, overlooking the enchanting Formal Gardens through French windows. With open fires in the winter, these historic rooms are just the place to while away time over a game of scrabble or the day’s newspaper; breakfast, light meals and snacks are served daily, while Afternoon Tea daily from 3.00pm-5.00pm. Land of make believe
M
ake Believe Ideas is a children’s publisher based in the heart of Berkhamsted. Established in 2004, the innovative publishing house creates imaginative books that sell worldwide. The company has a dedicated team whose creative genius inspires many original ideas and take books from initial concept to final design. The result is a popular and very successful range appealing to children and adults alike! To cope with a growing international demand for beautiful series of baby, toddler, activity, learning and illustrated story books, the company has recently moved. This has provided the fantastic opportunity to set up a child-friendly café downstairs from the office. Seeing a need for somewhere that could cater to the many young families in the local area, the managing director of Make Believe Ideas developed a vision for a café that could complement her company and fill the gap felt by local parents, nannies and grandparents. The café was an immediate hit, boasting a delicious range of homemade food and locally-sourced drinks and selling at a discount the beautiful children’s books conceptualized and designed upstairs! There is a play area for young children, walls brightly decorated with MBI book characters and even a Hickory Dickory Dock clock full of books for sale! Every day at 4pm the café hosts “Storytime”, where kids are entertained with stories such as the ever-popular Camilla the Cupcake Fairy or one of Kate Toms’ charmingly adapted nursery rhymes, to give parents a few minutes of precious peace! Paramount to the café’s founding, though, is a focus on giving back to the community. There have been numerous fundraising activities held by the café, such as a team of employees taking part in local Fun 24

Runs; a coffee-tasting evening with local company, Smiths Coffee; even a regular “Fancy a Cuppa?” coffee morning, which is proving popular with older members of the community as well as the young. An employee of the publisher even entered Berkhamsted’s “Biggest Loser” campaign, which ran from January to mid May. The café takes holidays seriously, providing activities such as craft mornings and colouring competitions. Parents are overjoyed to have somewhere to take children while schools are closed. Throughout the year, customers can buy take-away picnics for the whole family, and come rain or shine, the café is ready to help celebrate a special birthday – for under £10 each, kids can take part in a fun-filled afternoon with tasty activities and a special present for the birthday child. Even during term-time the café encourages children to enjoy books. On World Book Day the staff worked hard to promote books made by MBI, even dressing up as favourite book characters! A free book was given out with every order and all patrons received an exclusive MBI bookmark. The café has enjoyed a constant stream of parents, children, employees from nearby businesses and visitors to the area, but if you haven’t yet visited, do come and give it a try. T
he Artichoke restaurant, Old Amersham celebrated 10 successful years on Wednesday 31st October 2012. Guests enjoyed an unforgettable evening with head chef Laurie Gear sharing the kitchen with acclaimed Chef, restaurateur, television star and undoubted national treasure Raymond Blanc OBE. Raymond Blanc hardly needs an introduction; he is one of the country’s most respected chefs with numerous achievements including his exquisite Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons and the flourishing business Brassiere Blanc; as well as the renowned The Raymond Blanc Cookery School. Raymond has also been 26

happy birthday the star of many of the BBC’s most loved TV cookery programmes, including The Restaurant, Kitchen Secrets and most recently The Very Hungry Frenchman. In July 2009 Raymond was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Catey Awards. Sold out within minutes; an evening with the masterful chef Raymond Blanc marked the grand finale in a successful string of guest chef events at the Artichoke though out 2012 in celebration of the restaurants 10th anniversary. Head chef Laurie Gear has been joined by highly talented chefs including Russell Bateman (Colette’s at The Grove), James Knappett (Noma, Bubbledogs), Prue Leith and Alyn Williams (The Westbury).
During a pre dinner interview Raymond explained how he has been dining at the Artichoke since the early days and described it as ‘one of the best restaurants within the M40 corridor between Oxford and London’. He still remembers the perfect skate wing that Laurie cooked for him and the warm welcome received from Laurie’s wife Jacqueline all those years ago on that first visit. Raymond commented on how he has seen the restaurant grow and develop over the years and how he acted as a mentor to the couple when they made the descion to move into the property next door. Laurie explained that Raymond has always been a source of inspiration to him and compared him to be ‘the David Bowie of
cooking; never following fashion but creating it.’ Raymond concluded that the Artichoke is destined for great things and that it is fantastic to see a bright energetic team working together to create a wonderful dining experience. Raymond went on to spend the evening cooking alongside Laurie and his team, preparing a selection of his most celebrated signature dishes; an amuse bouche of garden beetroot terrine; horseradish crème fraiche, a fish course of confit of salmon, dill cucumber, cauliflower; wasabi crème fraiche, and a dessert of exotic fruit ravioli, kaffir lime and coconut jus. These dishes complimented Laurie’s starter of Isle of Sky scallop, slow braised pork belly,

cauliflower and cumin, a main course of squab pigeon, sweet corn puree, black truffle, sprout leaf and a pre-desert of goat’s milk mousse, sorrel sorbet. Guests enjoyed a Champagne reception with canapés followed by the bespoke six course tasting menu with selected wines chosen by Restaurant Manager/Sommelier, Ludovic Cosson to complement the dishes; coffee and petits fours completed the evening. Each couple received a signed copy of Raymond’s latest book “Kitchen Secrets” as a gift at the end of the evening. Laurie and his wife, Jacqueline opened the Artichoke Restaurant in 2002, but it was sadly forced to close after extensive fire damage from a neighboring property in June 2008, re-opening in autumn 2009. Since then the restaurant has gone from strength to strength, earning recognition for the innovative menu of modern European dishes. Having achieved early acclaim, the Artichoke has gone on to earn a array of awards and accolades and was named the
Good Food Guide’s Best New Entry 2011, awarded a rising star in the Michelin Guide for 2011 and listed 35th in the Good Food Guide’s top 50 UK restaurants for 2013 with a Cooking Score of 7/10 and Listed in The Times Top 100 UK Restaurants 2013. In early spring last year, Laurie and Jacqueline took over the building next door, ironically where the devastating fire began and now offer diners the choice of three distinct dining areas, including a bright first floor private room for 12-14 guests featuring its own wine cellar. The extension has allowed for a new state of the art open kitchen giving guests the opportunity to experience the culinary theatre and view Laurie and his team in action at the pass. The open kitchen is framed by tinted resin and willow wood screens that lead to a collection of chefs tables seating up to six guests. The refurbished restaurant evokes a feeling of space and light, whilst retaining elements of the original Grade 2 Listed
buildings. Taking inspiration from Laurie’s time in Scandinavia at Noma during the restaurants enforced closure; the interior embraces a relaxed stylish atmosphere, stripping away the formality, to concentrate on the modern innovative dishes In the run up to Christmas, the Artichoke will be open as usual until the 22nd December, then for dinner only on 28th December, lunch and dinner on 29th December and for a special Sunday lunch on 30th December. The Artichoke will be open for a ‘New Years Extravaganza’ on 31st December. Guests will enjoy J Lassalle Champagne upon arrival, followed by a seven course Menu Gourmand accompanied with Selected Wines. DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE A GOLDEN ERA CAPTURED AT THE RIVER & ROWING MUSEUM WORDS BY JACK HICKMOTT ravel from Henley-on-Thames to Paddington Station and hop on the underground and you will find yourself bombarded with a barrage of brightly coloured billboards, posters and adverts – quite often void of any style or intelligence! However, if you head down to the River & Rowing Museum you will see how it should be done. “Stuck Up” is a new exhibition that sees a striking selection of Thames transport posters brought together from the early 20th century - the golden age of British poster art. The new exhibition celebrates the masterful eye of Frank Pick (1878 – 1941) who became publicity officer for London Underground in 1908 and was instrumental in the evolution of its eye-catching brand design. The exhibition also captures a time when the Thames banks were a thriving social hub – during the early 20th century there was a surge in interest in the River Thames as a leisure destination. With most Londoners of that era already relying on the underground to get to work, Pick realised the only way to increase passenger numbers was to persuade Londoners to use the system more during their leisure time, taking advantage of the new trend towards punting, swimming, rowing and rambling on the Thames – and he developed an ingenious way of doing so. To promote London’s parks, museums, suburban beauty spots and historic houses and encourage more London Underground usage, Pick wanted to use colourful lithographic posters in the same way as Paris in the 1890s (Paris has revolutionised commercial advertising with artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Chéret and Bonnard forming the
T
28
NOVEMBER2012
emergence of the modern graphic poster). In London at this time, little thought was
given to the design of poster marketing materials and, after becoming dissatisfied with the
quality of design, Pick soon decided that instead of letting the printers hire commercial artists, he would commission young and emerging artists himself. By the 1920s this approach to advertising had taken off and Britain was experiencing a golden era in artistic and stylistic quality. During the 1920s and 1930s bold and striking poster designs appeared all over the London Underground with artists drawing inspiration from avant-garde art movements such as Cubism and Futurism. The use of these styles introduced elements of modern art to a much wider audience. Thanks to Pick, in the 1920s and 1930s designing a poster for London Transport became seen as an honour for both established and emerging artists. One of the earliest and most notable long running collaborations was with Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890 – 1954) who introduced many of the general London public to modern art through the influence of the cubist movement on his work. Other well known artists who accepted commissions included Man Ray (1890 – 1977) and Graham Sutherland (1903 – 1980). ‘Stuck Up!’ at the River & Rowing Museum was inspired by the generous donation of four duplicate Thames and rowing posters from the London Transport Museum and includes a number o0f items kindly loaned from their permanent collection. “Stuck Up” will run until February 2013. Tickets are £8 for adults and £6 for children and provide free access to the museum for a year. River & Rowing Museum, Mill Meadows, Henley-on-Thames, RG9 1BF. Follow @River_Rowing www.rrm.co.uk

ENJOY THE JOURNEY
O
nce again, the standard of exam marking has found its way into the news. Year on year we hear how there is a dispute over the GCSE results. Can anyone remember the same debates over O’Levels? Furthermore, the conversations in the sixth form common room and around the dining table, at present, consist heavily of universities and grades - required, acceptable and otherwise. In reality, how often, do our career plans pan out? How many of us attended university to study one subject only to find ourselves in a completely unrelated job, and not just once. Moreover, the recent spate of redundancies, although extremely unfortunate for all those involved, has created many new career opportunities. For the lucky ones, our passion becomes our career. Take Rebecca Fennell of Rebecca Fennell Photography. Rebecca is a freelance photographer based in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, yet that wasn’t her plan. Like many of us, Rebecca set out to do one thing and ended up with another! Born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, Rebecca’s passion for photography started at the age of 12 when she was gifted her first camera. However, after leaving school, she trained as a Cordon Bleu Chef, more because of its use than a burning desire. As a result, she completed three years in Cape Town working in a variety of restaurants, lodges and hotels, before commencing 30
NOVEMBER2012
her travels with her camera close at hand! By the time she reached Australia, Rebecca was learning about apertures and shutter speeds and doing test shots on film. Eventually, tired of travelling and catering, Rebecca settled in the UK and retrained as a business travel agent for American Express at evening classes. Like many others, redundancy loomed post 9-11. “In hindsight, this was an absolute blessing in disguise”, says Rebecca, “it was the catalyst that made me pursue my creative dream and study photography”. Rebecca passed her exams with top honours but, even then, only found work part-time in a photographic shop. In 2008, Rebecca was finally able to set up her own business. Not surprisingly, she gets “a real buzz” out of photographing food! Her catering background means that she still has a huge interest in food, the colours and textures and has completed a number of food shoots. Most recently, one of her photographs won a front cover award with Cake Central, the world’s undisputed magazine of choice for professional cake decorators. You can see the unedited version alongside, or visit Cake Central’s website to view it on the front cover of their September issue. The creator of the cake is Natasha Collins of Nevie-Pie Cakes. BEWARE
OF CHEAP IMITATIONS!
T
he Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) brought the complaint to the ASA, challenging whether Halford’s claim "save up to 50% on main dealer pricing" was misleading and could be substantiated, because it did not make clear the basis of the comparison or take into account the class of vehicle or regional pricing variations. It was also concerned whether the advertiser was comparing like for like services. For Roy Chapman Ltd, a family run Ford dealership, in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, which prides itself on high levels of customer care, this ruling is particularly important. Jeremy Chapman, Aftersales Director at Roy Chapman Ltd told us, “We are aware there is a misconception that franchised dealers are more expensive for servicing than some other national brands, like Halfords”. In fact, it is rarely the case that a franchised dealer is more expensive, and why Roy Chapman Ltd always recommends checking the small print of any cut-price service advertised, to ensure (a) what it does and does not include, and (b) the charges for any additional work. Furthermore, Roy Chapman Ltd will price match any genuine quotation from a local competitor. “We fight a constant battle on pricing” says Jeremy, “and customers can end up paying more because of all the unexpected extras. Our pricing at Roy Chapman Ltd is 100 percent transparent. Our Price Match confirms our faith in our pricing and ensures that the customer doesn’t lose out”. The garage has been serving Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire for over 38 years and, during that time, has never lost its focus. The company motto has remained the same from day one, “seldom beaten for value and
32

friendliness” and the Roy Chapman logo continues to feature the key members of the original team. Jeremy’s sister Justine, is Sales Director at Roy Chapman Ltd and maintains “we are keen to offer assistance and advice but, whilst being professional, do not favour the pressure-selling techniques so often found within the motor industry”. Instead, they wish to develop a relationship with their customers; long-term friendships based on trust and value for money, and are deservedly proud of seeing the same customers return year after year, whilst warmly welcoming new faces. There are a number of benefits of using Roy Chapman Ltd for servicing and repair work including: • A full range of services carried out to the manufacturer’s standard. • Fully trained and experienced technicians with specialist knowledge. • The latest diagnostic equipment used to identify all vehicle related issues. • Direct contact with the manufacturer ensuring up to date information with all safety issues and any recalls. • Genuine Ford Parts guaranteed for 12 months/unlimited mileage. • 12 months FREE roadside assistance including Homestart and European cover worth £160 with all Ford servicing. • Nectar points on all Ford service and repair work. • MOT for all makes and models at the reduced price of £39.95 with free wash and vacuum. Plus, if you’re aged 65 or over, take advantage of their unique offer which includes a lights and levels check and wash and vacuum on your car, completely free of charge! And, if you need further demonstration of Roy Chapman Ltd’s commitment to its customers, just take a look online at www.roychapman.com for lots of useful information on driving
safely this winter including the benefits of winter tyres. “We want to help local motorists keep moving this winter, whatever the weather has in store for us!” It has really only been in recent years that we’ve become aware of a need for winter tyres in the UK. Previously unfamiliar to most of us, due to the traditionally mild weather in the UK, thankfully tyre technology has advanced significantly over the years due to demand from other parts of the world that suffer extremes of temperature. The last Met Office report (Average Winter Weather 1971-2000) stated that most of the UK has an average temperature of less than 7°C for the period December to February and a minimum temperature of below 3°C. The next update is due shortly. “Our last two winters have seen many people struggling to get out of their drives, let alone commuting,” says Jeremy. “Winter tyres and now snow socks take the hassle out of winter driving and keep you moving”. Winter tyres look like normal
tyres but perform differently. Below 7°C winter tyres give significant safety advantages in wet and icy conditions, with enhanced grip and braking up to 8m shorter than a standard tyre at 30mph* (35m versus 43m in length). *Source Continental Tyres test of their winter tyres versus summer tyres. Recent news indicates that UK weather forecasters will be able to predict cold winter weather a season ahead with more confidence, according to analysis of a new computer model. However, predictions for the winter ahead are not yet available. AutoSocks are a cheaper alternative to winter tyres; they can be stored in your car boot and fitted when required. They are a reusable tyre snow sock, made of a unique technical fabric, which increases friction when slipped over the driving wheels of cars, vans or trucks for extra grip on ice or snow. They are simple and quick to fit and remove and are silent and smooth in use, unlike snow chains. Roy Chapman Ltd is currently offering winter tyres and snow socks from their showroom in Berkhamsted. Contact them directly for details. You can read the full article on the ASA ruling online at www.am-online.co.uk/news. TEDDY THE FOAL GETS A SECOND CHANCE
A
n abandoned foal is being given a second chance thanks to The Horse Trust, a horse charity based in Speen, Buckinghamshire. Eight week old colt foal Theodore, fondly known as Teddy, was found starving and alone on a local roadside with no sign of his mother. He was rescued by Thames Valley Police Officers, who were assisted by a Councillor from Buckinghamshire County Council, and bought to The Horse Trust to receive the specialist care and treatment he needs. Orphaned foals face many problems as they struggle to survive without their mother, but Teddy was also emaciated and suffering from an extraordinarily high worm count. Despite receiving round the clock care at The Horse Trust his health deteriorated and Teddy had to be rush to the Intensive Care Unit at The Royal Veterinary College (RVC). Thanks to the expert care of Teddy’s vets and veterinary nurses at the RVC Teddy has now improved enough to return to The Horse Trust. Against all the odds Teddy has pulled through and is doing well. He has even started spending a few minutes a day grazing in his new paddock with his new friend, a Shetland pony named George. Animal welfare charities across the UK 34

are reporting an alarming increase in the number of horses, ponies and donkeys found neglected or abandoned. Sadly colt foals like Teddy are at particular risk of being abandoned as they have little value in the current economic climate. Jeanette Allen, Chief Executive of The Horse Trust, said “We don’t know what happened to Teddy, but the overbreeding of low-value horses means that a greater number of colts are being abandoned and left to die. Teddy may have no commercial value, but he is priceless to us and all of the many supporters who have been wishing him well.” Buckinghamshire County Councillor and Cabinet Spokeswoman for Countryside Ruth Vigor-Hedderly, who assisted with Teddy’s rescue, said “Sadly this is not an isolated case and there are many more horses and ponies who need help.” Sergeant Lucy Price of Thames Valley Police said “Teddy’s case is truly shocking. We are grateful for the support of other
agencies including The Horse Trust in helping rescue Teddy and others like him”. Teddy was found on Langley Park Road in Iver on 17th October 2012. We do not know who is responsible or how he came to be abandoned. If you have any information about Teddy, please call Thames Valley police on 101. Teddy was abandoned through no fault of his own and The Horse Trust are keen to do all they can to give Teddy a fighting chance. Teddy already has his own Facebook fan club on The Horse Trust’s Facebook page with hundreds of people following his progress and wishing him well. It will cost £20,000 to pay for Teddy’s veterinary bills and to care for him for the next 3 years. Teddy’s supporters have already donated over £2,000, but the charity urgently needs the public’s help to raise a further £18,000 to help give Teddy a brighter future. To help Teddy please donate to The Horse Trust at www.horsetrust.org.uk

BRINGING BALANCE AND HARMONY INTO YOUR LIFE
I
n 1997, 55-year-old John Grimes of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, was recovering from chronic fatigue syndrome following Pericarditis. To help him manage the stress of returning to work, he took up yoga and, after that very first session, felt happier and healthier. John went on to complete a four-year diploma in Yoga Therapy, in 2010, with the Yoga Biomedical Trust and Yogacampus. The diploma involved in-depth studies in anatomy and physiology and over 500 hours of case study work, with the emphasis on treating the whole person rather than just the condition. Today, John says, “I’m calmer and more relaxed and contented than ever before. Yoga has changed my whole outlook on life and aided my recovery from illness – and that’s something I want to share.” Through a series of one to one sessions, Yoga Therapy provides you with a yoga sequence to practise regularly at home to promote a healthier way of life. Yoga Therapy is practised by yoga teachers, such as John, with specialised training and experience in the therapeutic adaptation and application of yoga, and is recognised by the NHS and regulated by the CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council).
NATURAL WELLBEING FOR EVERYONE
No experience of yoga is necessary and John’s approach begins with very simple exercises, so that you can begin to practise and benefit straight away. Yoga therapy is appropriate for a wide range of ages, lifestyles and levels of fitness and takes into account your specific health concerns including Lower Back Pain, High Blood Pressure, Breathing problems including Asthma, COPD and Panic Attacks, Chronic Fatigue, Stress, Anxiety and Migraines, to name just a few. YOGA DESIGNED FOR YOU
Working with yoga therapeutically is about the whole person, and so John begins with an in-depth discussion and assessment of you, your condition(s) and lifestyle, in order to be able to create your personalised yoga plan. Your unique, easy-to-follow plan, comes with detailed descriptions and diagrams, and will be based upon yoga postures, breathing exercises, relaxation and meditation, personalised to meet your specific needs. “We will refine and update your plan as you progress and I will give you plenty of support, guidance and advice to help you continue the practice in your own time,” which, says John, is usually achieved in 3-5 sessions. In addition to Yoga Therapy, John offers a number of gentle and therapeutic traditional yoga classes in Berkhamsted, Northchurch and Aylesbury. John also runs regular classes for Age Concern and the British Lung Foundation. To find out more visit John’s website www.johngrimesyoga.co.uk or to book an initial assessment contact John on tel: 07775 531502 or email: john@johngrimesyoga.co.uk.

erkhamsted accountancy firm, Rickaby & Co, have celebrated their 10th birthday in good company this year, alongside the Diamond Jubilee, London Olympics and Paralympics, amongst others. These events, by their very nature, have bought the whole country together, uniting individuals and providing hope and aspiration at a time when we needed it most – during the economic downturn. As we continue to see many national companies making large-scale cost-cutting measures and vast numbers of staff redundant, it’s heart-warming, therefore, to know that many local businesses are continuing to push ahead and grow, despite the tough financial climate. John Rickaby formed Rickaby & Co on Lower Kings Road, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, in 1976, where the business remains today. Following John’s retirement in 2002, Chris Baranov, who had joined some years earlier and gained his qualifications with the firm, bought the business, then consisting of just four individuals. Chris and his wife, Liz, have subsequently built Rickaby & Co into a successful and integral part of the business community, tripling in size, with clients across most of the major industries including manufacturing and technology. Furthermore, two new members of staff have joined them in the last three months and they are actively recruiting to expand their bookkeeping services. Chris and Liz pride themselves on their ability to deliver a first class service, which exceeds their clients’ expectations. How do they do this? Essentially, they are a family business with a strong team of experienced, friendly and approachable people. Jan Foo, Director of Fine and Country Berkhamsted Estate Agents, specialising in the sale of high quality and distinctive homes, says, “Rickaby & Co have always responded quickly and efficiently and they are actively interested in
the business and nature of what we do. At the end of the day they are fun, they’re real people!” Liz, who is responsible for business development and client relationships, says she believes their key to success is focussing on the people they act for, “their motives, fears, needs and goals and developing relationships based on this understanding”. With their top
three values being integrity, support and flexibility, they stand by their claim that “not all accountants are the same!” Liz also believes that embracing technology has helped them move forward, with the company active on Twitter and LinkedIn with regular newsletters, online accountancy packages, and offering remote IT support for training and support, when required by clients. Rickaby & Co are the only Chartered Certified Accountants and Registered Auditors in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, with the ACCA Quality Mark assuring their clients of the quality of their service. They work with businesses of all sizes across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, from new start-ups and sole traders to established businesses with turnover in excess of £15million. If you would like to find out more, call Liz to arrange a free initial consultation meeting on tel: 01442 873236 or visit their website www.rickaby.co.uk for detailed information on their service provision.

It is a dress agency that focuses upon high quality ladies’ fashion and accessories. The shop functions like a typical dress agency, but with one important difference; all of the profits go to support the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity. Labels is located in Old Amersham (just next door to Ask). It’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon, have lunch, and find some fabulous, unique clothing for a fraction of the original price. The shop sells gorgeous dresses, jackets, shoes, handbags and much more. It is also a great place to pick up a wedding outfit, hat for Ascot or perhaps a sensuous, silk scarf. We often take in labels such as Mulberry, Basler, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Jaeger, Weekend by MaxMara, Moschino, Hobbs, Whistles, Phase Eight, Ralph Lauren, and many others. How does it work? We operate on a 50/50 basis. So half goes to you and half goes to the hospice. We are looking for quality ladies clothing, accessories and jewellery, no more than three years old, although we do make exceptions for unique, quirky vintage pieces. We would like clothing in season, in excellent condition, freshly laundered, crease free and on hangers. We accept designer labels and top high street makes. When bringing handbags and shoes, please ensure the insides and outsides are clean. We work by appointment, so please call us on 01494 728333 to arrange for us to sell your lovely things! The Florence Nightingale Hospice provides specialist palliative care to local families affected by life-limiting illness, such as cancer, heart disease or other conditions like Motor Neurone Disease. BANISH BAD HAIR DAYS FOREVER! D
o you constantly have bad hair days or spend hours worrying about your hair or lack of it! Many women have freed themselves from these overwhelming feelings by visiting Rapunzel Ltd in Marlow. Rapunzel say their aim is to let every woman experience the joy of having beautiful hair – not just the lucky few! Whether your problem is hair loss, general thinning, damage, limp locks or you just don't have the hairstyle you want. Hair extensions or a hair loss solution could be the answer for you. Using only the finest European human hair with a choice of over 50 colours their highly trained technicians & stylists can add amazing volume and/or up to 24 in length in only a couple of hours, they can also transform your hair colour and give you a stylish new hair cut. They seem to be able to work miracles. There is often a belief that hair extensions can cause terrible damage to your own hair due to the weight of the extra hair, this is UNTRUE! The facts are that a single scalp hair can support a weight of 100g and an average head of hair twisted together can support 23 tons. Hair extensions applied incorrectly with a lack of experience/care/or training cause this industry a bad name. Hairdressers that have been on a single days training in hair extensions are not giving the same service or experience as experts like Rapunzel whom are specialists in their field and have been for over 20 years now. At Rapunzel they have an honest and ethical approach and take the time to listen to their clients needs and wants. No other hair extension company in the UK has the advantage of not only the vast years of experience but also their medical and tricology knowledge all rolled into one. The team at Rapunzel truly understand the relationship between our hair and our happiness. Our hair is a very public symbol of our health and a crucial factor of our overall well being. We use it to draw attention to

Q&A
WITH THE AWARD WINNING DENTIST
DR SHAMEEK POPAT
IN AID OF MOUTH CANCER ACTION MONTH 2012, I THOUGHT I WOULD WRITE A LITTLE ABOUT MOUTH CANCER. THE LATEST FIGURES SUGGEST THAT MORE THAN 6,000 PEOPLE WILL BE DIAGNOSED WITH MOUTH CANCER IN THE UK ALONE. AT THIS CURRENT RATES OF GROWTH, THOSE DIAGNOSED WITH THE DISEASE WILL HAVE DOUBLED IN A SINGLE GENERATION – NOT A GREAT THOUGHT ! WHO IS MOST AT RISK?
Mouth cancer incidence has always been strongly related to age. In the UK, just under half (44 per cent) of all mouth cancer cases were diagnosed in people aged 65 and over, with more than a quarter (25 per cent) diagnosed in the under 55s. Although the gap has significantly diminished over time, men are still twice more likely to develop mouth cancer than woman, although for men, age-specific incidence rates peak at ages 60-69, whereas for woman it peaks in the over-80s. Given the most well established risk factors for the major types of oral cancer are excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, it is not surprising that mouth cancer incidence is strongly associated with deprivation. The most resent England-wide data shows incidence rates for head and neck cancer are more than double (130 per cent) for men living in more deprived areas compared with the
least deprived, and more than 74 per cent higher for woman. Similar results have also been published for Northern Ireland and Wales while Scotland shows an even larger deprivation gap. YOUR GUIDE TO THE RISK FACTORS
Smoking Still considered to be the leading cause of mouth cancer in the UK, tobacco use transforms saliva into a deadly cocktail that damages cells in the mouth and can turn them cancerous. With over two thirds of smokers wanting to quit, now is the time for all health professionals to encourage those to give up smoking to aid the fight against mouth cancer: Smokers are up to four times more likely to quit with the help of a professional. Alcohol People who smoke and drink to excess are up to 30 times more likely to develop mouth cancer, as alcohol aids the absorption of
tobacco into the mouth. Drinking to excess can increase the risk of developing mouth cancer by four times. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) HPV, transmitted through sexual activity, is increasingly being linked to mouth cancer and is considered to be a direct cause of the rise in cases among younger people. Experts suggest HPV may rival tobacco and alcohol as a leading risk factor within 10 years, although some research indicates that people with mouth cancer caused by HPV may have a greater chance of survival. Poor Diet It is recommended that people eat healthy, balanced diet including five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Increasing evidence suggests that Omega 3, found in foods such as eggs and fish can help lower risks, as can foods high in fibre such as nuts, seeds, whole wheat pasta and brown rice.
Smokeless Tobacco Smokeless tobacco is normally defined as any tobacco that is placed in the mouth or nose that is not burned. Although some people believe that this type of tobacco is safer than smoking, the reality is that it is much more dangerous when it comes to mouth cancer. SYMPTOMS
Mouth cancer can strike in a number of different places, including the lips, tongue, gums and cheek, so it is important that people examine their own mouth on a regular basis. Non-healing mouth ulcers and red or white patches on the tongue or gums, and unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth are the most common symptoms of mouth cancer. Other less common symptoms can include pain on swelling or swallowing, a sore throat that won’t go away, a thickening of the cheek and unusual pain, bleeding or numbness in the mouth. EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES!
The five year survival rate of mouth cancer patients is just 50 per cent. But early diagnosis gives patients a 90 per cent chance of survival. That is why as a dentist I support Mouth Cancer Action Month – to help increase the awareness of the disease, the symptoms and the risk factors.

ith 13 years’ experience in the nail industry and a member of The Guild of Nail Technicians, Hazel Ponting MGNT is a Qualified Educator for OPI UK, and is also the Founder of Rock & Rosie Nail Couture. Whilst looking for a special place to set up her nail salon, Hazel came across the tiny village of Chalfont St. Giles. This wonderful historic 16th century building holds so much character which provides a contrast for the high tech fittings and fixtures installed to make the most of the salon experience. Although warm and cosy, the salon has a fresh feel with burnt orange and white as the predominant themes throughout. Joining Hazel as a recent addition to the team is Elisha, who is fast becoming an expert at nail coverings like OPI Nail Apps and Minx. Rock and Rosie Nail Couture showcases OPI, the award winning globally recognised professional nail brand, renowned for its indulgent, luxury treatments and amazing long lasting lacquer shades. Having trained staff for OPI at The London College of Fashion, Selfridges, Colourcopia Westfield, and The Four Seasons Hotel, London, most recently Hazel was delighted to have been chosen as part of the team of OPI Educators working on the new James Bond film Skyfall at Pinewood Film Studios. The OPI Skyfall 007 Limited Edition Collection is dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of Bond films. There are twelve pigment rich new shades. The ‘Seductive Shades’ include: You Only Live Twice – a rich pink-red berry tone with shimmer, Casino Royale – a deep, rich plum, and Skyfall – a lovely rich, dark burgundy with an even glossy finish. The Dangerous Shades include: Tomorrow Never Dies - powerful purple with pink micro flecks of glitter, The Living Daylights which is a clear varnish with large pieces of copper, teal, and 64

On display is a very comprehensive selection from V-’Zug including a fantastic Combi Steam Oven XSLthat enables the cook to use the sous vide method of cooking, much loved by chefs such as Heston Blumenthal in its ability to seal in flavour and colour. This is the first domestic combi steam oven that allows the cook absolute control of temperature that is needed for this vacuum method of cooking. Indeed a breakthrough in the world of technology. In addition to the Combi Steam, there are on display warming drawers, microwaves, a coffee centre, and the latest in induction hobs. o mark the 75th Anniversary of the historic site of the Pinewood Studios in September 2011 the massive 35ft high Elizabethan fire surround which forms the main entrance was painstakingly restored by students from the Buckinghamshire New University. This was a tricky and prestigious job and the MA. Furniture Conservation, Restoration & Decorative Arts students spent nine days restoring colour and finish to the vast 16th century solid oak structure, bought to Pinewood from Ilam Hall in Derbyshire in 1930. The university has been acknowledged as a source for talent in the various aspects of care and restoration for more than twenty years with many worthy patrons to their credit, but there is traditionally a problem exposing such skills to the commercial world. Thank fully that has been addressed by a new enterprise called Bucks Conservation, the aims of which are to channel commercial conservation and restoration projects to BA (Hons) and MA Furniture Conservation, Restoration and Decorative Arts recent alumni. I know about this because I was invited to attend its official launch at Fernandez & Wells, Somerset House, London on Monday 8 October 2012. This was followed by a guided and private tour of The Courtauld Gallery, which if you haven’t visited is well worth the time as it is, as it rightfully claims to be, one of the finest small art museums in the world. So access to educated restoration of our heritage will be more readily available than ever and by no means restricted to furniture. Indeed the massive chandelier in Halton House in Buckinghamshire has just received some tender loving care from some recent alumni and wonderful it now looks indeed. To compliment the growth of interest and talent in restoration and conservation one of the most reassuring things in the last decade has 74

been the establishment of young artisans creating truly beautiful work in all areas of the decorative arts. At the risk of sounding as if my life revolves around going to launch parties and visiting shows – which I can assure you it does not – I was invited to the opening of PAD. Set within a vast fabric structure in Berkley Square, London, this is without question London’s leading fair for 20th Century art, design and decorative arts. Inspiring a unique spirit of collecting, PAD epitomises how modern art, photography, design, decorative and tribal arts interact to reveal astonishing combinations and create the most individual and staggering interiors. Prominent international galleries from major cities across Europe, North America and Asia come together to offer an exceptional panorama of the most coveted and iconic works available on the market today. Anyone receiving this magazine for more than twelve months may remember that I reported on this last year and was absolutely entranced by the furniture made by the Irish phenomenon Joseph Walsh. He astounded again this year with a ‘shelf ’ sculptured from a multitude of laminates to form as if made of petrified fabric blowing in the wind. This recent fair was by far the best I’ve seen with such innovations that gladden the heart, and a leading gallery in this respect is Pearl Lam Design. At PAD they were
presenting six international artists and designers from very different design scenes, one of whom, André Dubreuil, produced the most amazing fusion of ancient and modern chinoiserie. A major piece entitled Mr Big was a version of the traditional cabinet on stand but what a cabinet and what a stand! Using steel, copper, stone and enamel it’s a ferocious yet beautiful and functional work of Art. In contrast Christian Elwes of Entwistle was showing, from their tyribal inventory a stylized and most elegant ceremonial bird head club, or Poro Wa Ramaru, from the Kanak peoples of New Caledonia. Visually it stops you in your tracks, as no doubt it would if you were hit by it, but it is of such compelling sculptural form that it symbolises wealth and high rank rather than being a combat weapon. Nevertheless stunning in every sense of the word. At PAD there is lighting the intricacies of which defy understanding, décor that makes you want to go home and start again and furniture and accessories that make you smile and covet. Overall it is the imagination and the ingenuity of the young designers and artisans that make for such a great show. I especially like the way so many are taking tradition and twisting it around with new ideas, materials and techniques. Zoe Ouvrier is a name to watch if you are thinking about antiques of the
future. She creates unique pieces from carved wood as well as paintings and lace-adorned decorative screens. Using plywood that has first been painted and then intricately and painstakingly engraved, Ouvrier’s works display the motifs of plant stems and the roots, nodes, and shoots often concealed underground. The resulting artworks are a beautiful tribute to nature and expert craftsmanship. Speaking of which, names and craftsmanship that is, I have recently been reminded of one of the great names in the world of Art Nouveau bronzes, Bruno Zach. Zach was born in the town of Schitomir, Ukrainein in 1891, the year my grandfather formerly established his antiques business in Tring, and died in 1945. He studied at the Vienna Academy and subsequently worked for various foundries in Vienna producing the finest quality bronze works including western, oriental, sporting, animalier, art deco and erotic subjects, sometimes incorporating ivory carved to replicate the unclothed parts of the model. One of his most desirable figures is entitled ‘The Riding Crop’ of which there were two versions. One stands 32 inches high, of which there were more than ninety produced and the other, at just a third of that height, of which no more than six are recorded. Asked to find an example of the latter I went to the one person I know who might help, David Hickmet. David’s Gallery 85 is at that number in Portobello Road and sure enough, and as luck would have it one of his ‘finders’ – David has people all over the world sourcing his speciality – had just located the one illustrated. A perfect example with a patina that guarantees authenticity, just like a piece of my 18th century furniture. So horizons are broadened all the time and with pieces from Elizabeth I to Elizabeth II it’s been a busy month

A COSY WINTER
RETREAT You don’t always think of retreating to the garden during the long winter months, but a garden room can make this a real possibility old, rain, frost, snow – usually we leave the garden to hibernate during the winter and stay curled up in our centrally heated houses. But often our winter gardens offer stunning views, and we can get a bit fed up with being indoors all the time. With a garden room from Crown Pavilions you can enjoy garden living all year round. Luke Dejahong, Managing Director of Crown Pavilions, explains, “Outdoor living is an all-year possibility with our garden rooms. We manufacture in the UK using Canadian Western Red Cedar as the main basis of our structures. It is one of the best natural insulating

materials and one of the most durable timbers for the outdoors. It is perfect for the UK climate. And we now offer fully insulated, doubleglazed argon gas-filled windows and doors, and solid oak rustic flooring”. Crown Pavilions manufacture a whole range of garden rooms which can feature sitting rooms with plasma screens, studies with storage and internet connection, screens and fold back doors, mood lighting for evening entertainment, heating, hot tubs, home gyms, and outdoor kitchens or barbecues for when the weather warms up.

Even in the winter you can enhance your use of outside space. One of the very important details is the landscaping. “When we install a garden room we are especially mindful of how it fits into your garden design,” says Luke. “Our sister company, Crown Gardens, will look after every aspect of planting and creating a beautiful setting. We advise and design the planting around the garden room to fit in with the style of your existing garden. You can landscape around the structure to create an integral part of your garden, at every season of the year.” Crown Pavilions have created some wonderful garden rooms for many UK and international clients. They specialize in providing a tailored, bespoke service. All the products are manufactured in the UK. A garden room should be an extension of your home, and you can put it wherever you want. Planning permission is not usually required but you should always contact your local planning officer, or let Crown Pavilions do that for you. They provide a seamless hassle-free product and service from order to completion.
All that is left is for you to turn up the heat, light some candles, decorate with some winter foliage, and you have a warm winter garden retreat for whiling away the long winter afternoons.

CUSTOM DESIGNS WITH FLAIR

ustom Kitchens and Bedrooms have designed and built stunning interiors for our discerning clients over the last three decades. But our real passion remains being able to create environments which give our clients the ability to have the kitchen they want at a price they can afford without having to make a compromise… Mrs Davey of Leighton Buzzard recently had one of these attractive new kitchens fitted by us and reflected on the quality, care and attention to service. From the initial 84
NOVEMBER2012
consultation and creative design right through to those extra special details which make all the difference she said that the result “totally exceeded her initial vision”. Like many of our clients, Mrs Davey had an idea of how she wanted her kitchen to look when she arrived at the showroom; but having seen the range of branded products available as well as those we design and build in the workshop, she was happy to let our designer (Pete Morgan) work his magic. By the time the final design was agreed she said that “it was like Pete had read my mind and then added a bit
more flair”. So having turned a dream into a vision which inspired Mrs Davey, the next part was to make sure her brief was delivered on time, within budget and looking even more beautiful than the picture we had drawn together. At the end of the project we asked Mrs Davey if she felt she had received value for money, and she replied “very much so; I believe that you do get what you pay for, but in this case it was all the extra special detail that made it truly beautiful and delivered beyond my expectation”. Projects like Mrs Davey are
the foundations of our business and as the majority of our clients come to us on recommendation it is important to us that they all receive a first class service. These pictures, along with the look of delight on her face when she viewed the finished work, are what inspire us each day. Thank you for being a client of Custom Kitchens and Bedrooms Mrs Davey. hile out and about in her “splendiferously” branded Mini Cooper in the early spring, Claire Gallagher, owner of Splendiferous Cookery School was approached by a fellow shopper. “I see from your car that you offer bespoke catering. Would you be interested in pitching for an outdoor black tie event for 500 people this summer?” Claire didn’t hesitate for a second: “Absolutely!” she said. After her successful submission and menu-tasting sessions, the High Wycombe Royal Grammar School Event Committee chose Splendiferous to be its caterer for the school’s July 450th Anniversary Dinner Gala. WETTEST SUMMER ON RECORD
Weather was likely the major challenge preparing this outdoor epicurean feast for hundreds (you may recall June and July were among the wettest on record!). Unfazed, Claire and her team prepared the food in a rental kitchen next to the RGS cricket pitch. The response from patrons was emphatic: the Splendiferous menu of Pimms Cucumber Salad, Roasted Rack of Lamb, Shiraz Jelly, Passion Fruit and Ginger Pannacotta, delivered by her brigade of chefs was outstanding. “I cannot thank Claire and her team enough - she was a delight to work with and delivered precisely what she’d promised; delicious, exquisitely cooked, beautifully presented HOT food,” says Fiona Eddings, Chair of the Committee. TEAM-BUILDING AND TAILOR-MADE COOKERY CLASSES
Logistical and culinary accolades aside, Team Building and Cookery Classes are the mainstay of Splendiferous. “Increasingly, groups are approaching us to tailor our ready-made cookery classes to their specific needs: some 88

local businesses will even be holding their Christmas functions in the Splendiferous Kitchen, beavering away on culinary delights. It’s a delicious alterative to the standard hotel or restaurant function.” PERSONALITY PLUS
“I do love the process of creating an event for a client’s party or dinner,” says Gallagher, “however I find working directly with small to medium-sized groups is a truly collaborative experience that appeals to my personality.” Team-building continues to be a regular part of HR within multi-national corporations. A new growth area in the current economy is smaller firms looking for alternative, affordable ways to motivate and reward employees. “We have built remarkable relationships with local global multi-nationals who came to us through word-of-mouth,” she continues. “We have also facilitated team-building goals for local private and public sector groups, designing custom events with fun, communal atmospheres.” Most forward-thinking companies agree Team-building provides high-impact learning, increases team skills and communications, and improves morale and productivity. People also have the opportunity to work as a re-constituted team, highlighting different personality traits. There are a number of different Splendiferous Team Builders that are well-matched to most budgets and objectives.
Importantly, all have elements of collaboration, competition and of course, consumption! For starters (!) there is a 1.5 hour canapé making session, and other modules have varying levels of cookery demonstrations, “ready-steady-cook” style competitions, menu planning and meal building, and lots and lots of eating! Everyone gets involved at every level. Tailor-made enhancements Each module can be enhanced with tasty add-ons - luxury hand-made canapés on arrival, artisan cheese boards, champagne, fine wines or house wines. Connoisseurs: We can invite wine or cheese experts to enrich a given subject. Transport: group or individual transport (to ensure employees get home safely). Professional photography: to record the day’s events. Parting gifts: bespoke recipe books or edible treats. At Splendiferous, Team Building and Cookery Class preparation is creative, logistical and detailed. And the overall experience for the group is always fun, social and rewarding. www.splendiferous.co.uk Words: Jayne Barnes Pictures: Mark Dearlove
