INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

A very special

PLACE

Heatherton House Nursery in Amersham has earned a wonderful reputation in the local area for being a Nursery that goes that extra mile.

“I

t is a very caring environment, where every child is known individually and their own interests nurtured and developed,” confirms current Heatherton Nursery parent. “The children develop a real love of learning and are filled with confidence for moving onto school.” Based in a large, recently refurbished and specially designed Early Years area with amazing outdoor space, the Nursery is part of Heatherton House School, the leading girls independent prep school in Amersham, and offers both boys and girls an outstanding start to their education journey. Heatherton’s Nursery is in the enviable position of currently having two fully qualified teachers as part of their Early Years team, with an extremely high staff to child ratio. This means they are able to respond to the individual learning needs and interests of every child and to tailor their education to suit them, and at their pace. The Nursery children learn through planned, purposeful play, exploration and investigation. Boys and girls are able to choose activities that interest them and are allowed time

16 APRIL 2017

to complete their chosen tasks in the indoor area that features a purposeful wooden play frame, a fully equipped IT zone, separate role-play space, a dedicated creative area, and a ‘cosy’ room for circle time. There’s also an impressive outdoor area with numerous ride-on toys, water play, large sand pit and dedicated garden and digging zone. The Nursery staff work extremely hard to establish a close bond with the children and their parents so they learn all about the child’s interests and previous experiences. They then use this knowledge to create new learning opportunities for the children to ensure that they have fun and enjoy challenges and successes whilst making real progress. What also makes this Nursery stand out from others is that it offers its children an outstanding level of specialist teaching and experiences. Every week, their boys and girls enjoy interactive music and modern foreign languages sessions with Heatherton House’s specialist teachers. The children also take part in weekly ballet lessons taught by the school’s highly experienced ballet teacher, as well as popular PE and ball skills sessions, run by external experts Playball Bucks. THE DETAILS Why not come and experience this special Nursery for yourself? Heatherton House School and Nursery are holding an Open Afternoon on Friday 12th May, 1.45-3pm. Call 01494 726433, email admissions@heathertonhouse.co.uk or visit www.heathertonhouse.co.uk.

NURTURING EXCELLENCE The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School has a reputation for nurturing excellence and helping boys to achieve the very best in every area of their personal development. In 2016, Habs recorded its best ever GCSE results, with 73% being A* and 95.4% in the A*/A range. A Level results were also outstanding, contributing to an exceptionally high Oxbridge acceptance rate; almost 40% achieved A* grades, 78.5% of results were A*/A range and 97.7% A*/B. Students are given the opportunity to discover their potential across a range of disciplines. The Medburn Centre, a brand new, state-of-the-art sports complex, was opened in 2016. One of the best sports facilities available at a British school, it is yet another extension to the school’s exceptional existing amenities. Boasting an eightlane, half-Olympic size swimming pool, fitness suite, squash courts, climbing facilities, sports hall, conference room, school shop and café. The school is serviced by a unique coach service with over 110 stops, spanning a 30-mile radius, offering an unrivalled access to the school and provision for pupils staying for after-school activities.

In March, the school held its nineth annual Model United Nations conference. HABSMUN saw the school play host to over 600 students representing schools from Frankfurt to Azerbaijan, debating issues and challenges facing the modern world including mental health, political refugees and nuclear disarmament to the future of NATO. An entirely student run event, HABSMUN is an impressive highlight on the Habs calendar, with this year’s keynote speech delivered by Lord Popat, the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Rwanda and Uganda.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

Drama beyond the classroom at Merchant Taylors’ BY DAMEON GARNETT DIRECTOR OF DRAMA

With over 50 boys now auditioning for the annual junior play, it is fair to say extra-curricular Drama is thriving at Merchant Taylors’, not to mention the fact that, whatever the show, it seems to be a relatively easy affair to fill out the 120 seat capacity studio theatre over three nights - not including the upstairs gallery. This year we turned the studio in to a traverse stage for a performance of The Lord of the Flies, with the audience on either side, and the actors/students in the middle. It was clear from the facial expressions of the audience that they were enjoying this ‘immersive’ theatre experience, and that we should break the mould in this way more often.

S

ince Drama became an elective subject in Year 9 curriculum Drama has also seen an increase in interest; on average 80 boys opted to do Drama last year, and we now potentially have 2 sets again for GCSE Drama, possibly on the basis that, with boys choosing to do the subject in Year 9, it is a more rewarding experience for all involved. This also feeds in to the large interest in extra-curricular Drama. The annual Drama Duologues competition this year was overwhelmed with boys wanting to take part, and perhaps even more excitingly, to write their own material. All this said, the future of A-Level Drama, now called A-Level Drama and Theatre, is not without its challenges. With students no longer having the option of dropping the subject half-way through the course (at least not without actually losing the qualification); there is more difficulty in making the commitment. Former A-Level students have gone on to prestigious

18 APRIL2017

places such as Central School of Speech and Drama. More to the point, others have gone on to read subjects that would seem to have little connection with Drama – Law at Bristol, Medicine at UCL, History at King’s, and Science at Cambridge, to name but a few. This should demonstrate that, as with all subjects, A-Level Drama is highly valued by the Russell Group Universities for its transferable skills; the obvious enhanced skills in confidence and presentation; an awareness of how theatre responds to political and historical context, the application of imagination and ‘outside of the box’ thinking, that will always apply to running a business, or simply dealing with people and transactions in the work place. Finally, and ability to enjoy and understand the language of a writer such as Shakespeare (an actor who developed his writing craft by doing, not theory), can only be an advantage for both the imagination, and the intellect. An extensive vocabulary, and a ‘way with words’, is a huge advantage, both creatively, and intellectually, as we all know. The obvious next step here would be to mention prestigious old boys, such as film stars Riz Ahmed and Nigel Lindsay. It is also good to see a former student, Ben Behrens, writing his own plays and getting them staged at the Arcola Theatre in London. Though rightly very proud of their achievements, clearly not all Merchant Taylors’ students are going to go on to become film stars, or are even aiming to do so. They key is to also celebrate those former students who did A Level Drama, and yet have gone on to read different academic subjects; followed by highly successful careers. A Level Drama and Theatre is for those who enjoy it, and can certainly enhance students’ prospects of studying a degree that interests them at a Russell Group university, whether or not this be directly Drama related. HRH The Duchess of Gloucester opens

New St Helen’s Junior School On Tuesday 28th March Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester officially opened the new Junior School building at St Helen’s School, Northwood. Hundreds of pupils waved Union Jack flags as the Duchess arrived to unveil a plaque to officially open the £8.2 million building.

O

n arrival, The Duchess of Gloucester inspected a Guard of Honour formed by cadets from St Helen’s School and Merchant Taylors’ School’s Combined Cadet Force, which comprises one of the largest CCF groups in the country.Headmistress Dr Mary Short gave the Duchess a tour of the new building, which included demonstrations by the girls, after which the Duchess was treated to a performance by the Junior School Choir (of a song which the girls helped to write) and a recitation by the winner of the ‘Prose & Poetry’ competition. Dr Short said: "It has been a great privilege to welcome the Duchess to open our wonderful new Junior School. "It was heartwarming to see her speak with so many pupils. Many of them had not met a member of the Royal Family before. She asked the pupils questions, such as what their favourite subjects are, and complimented the pupils on their investigatory work. The pupils were thrilled. Our vision of creating the best possible provision, with an exceptional learning

20 APRIL2017

environment for our pupils, has come to fruition, and we look forward to future generations making the most of all that the building has to offer.” The brand new eco-friendly building has been welcomed with open arms, particularly by the Junior School ‘Eco-Warriors’, who have been actively involved in raising awareness of environmental issues and encouraging environmental responsibility within the Junior School. The building was completed in September 2016, and is the largest single development the School has undertaken in over ten years. Award winning architects, IID, who were commissioned to design the new Junior School said, “The brief called for a radical solution for which a contemporary new-build was the School’s preferred approach. The design sought to create a clear identity for Junior School whilst integrating the new building with the landscape – using the concept of ‘fingers into the landscape’ with intensive green roofs and open courts. We felt that it was important to keep the organisation and layout clear, simple and intelligible to enable the staff and pupils to find their way around easily. To see the new building being enjoyed by the school gives us great satisfaction. We hope that it continues to be a valuable asset for many years to come.” The Duchess of Gloucester said, “I know that the new building will aid the girls greatly in their learning and prepare them well for the move up to the Senior School, and I wish the whole community the very best for the future. I would like to thank all the pupils, staff and guests for a wonderful morning and inviting me to officially open the new Junior School at St Helen’s.”

GOLFING LIFE

Burnham Beeches Golf Club Burnham Beeches Golf Club is the oldest club in Buckinghamshire and has just celebrated its 125th Anniversary. The course is an England Golf Championship venue and offers members and visitors a memorable golf experience, together with a welcoming atmosphere in the club house.

T

he Club’s success is built on its twin policies of putting members first and continuous investment in its facilities and

services. The beautiful course sits on the edge of the ancient Burnham Beeches woodland and offers peace and tranquillity amid all the hustle and bustle of being so close to London. A little gem of a course

T

Hennerton Golf Club is a beautiful 18-hole course set in mature parkland, overlooking panoramic views of the Thames Valley.

his little gem of a course is in a truly peaceful location tucked away in rural Crazies Hill, but only minutes from Henley, Maidenhead or Sonning and is perfect for the visiting golfer and golf society. A Boutique Course Not every golfer wants to always play on a championship length course and Hennerton offers variety in an area surrounded by grand courses with 300-yard drives. This course offers up different challenges without destroying the enjoyment of the game. Such courses are a rarity, and some shorter courses turn out to be disappointingly bland, but not so at Hennerton! Offering a charming mix of holes, a surprising number have a real ‘wow’ factor . Measuring 4,187 yards off the yellow tees, level opening fairways lead on to features such as water hazards lined with bulrushes and spectacular drop holes. Assistant Professional Warren Harris says of the greens that ‘they vary from flat, subtle breaks and borrows to undulating surfaces where good green reading and pace judgement are required’. Inviting & Friendly The course is perfectly suited for beginners and improvers – with the membership being particularly friendly, no unintentional faux pas will be frowned upon. The course length also particularly suits seniors and ladies – with regular member events on for both. Junior boys and girls thrive here with a healthy, friendly running order of merit. Zara Bone, General Manager says ‘The length of Hennerton means you can concentrate on your short game – one of the reasons why the Berkshire County Girls’ team uses us as a training ground. ‘The emphasis is on enjoyment and sociability. We have something here for all ages, from 6 to 96 years of age!’.

W

ith over 45 years combined service in the green keeping industry as Green Keeping staff, Deputy and Course Managers, the team at Turf Tonics fully understand the demands on the Course Manager with budgets, machinery and manpower. Daily upkeep of the course can fully utilise the man hours available in the green-keeping team. Budgets often dictate the purchase of new machinery best suited for the job that may only need to be carried out a handful of times each year. New staff may need training in specific tasks to enable them to carry out their jobs to the standards required. This is where Turf Tonics will work with the Course Manager to assess how to improve the overall playing surface of the course. From course renovations to monthly aeration or simply supplying regular staff and services, Turf Tonics likely have the machinery and the manpower that will help the Course Manager achieve the desired results. One of their most in-demand services at the present time is aeration. “Air is one of, if not the most important product, for anything that lives” says Colin Wilson and Steve Gardner, Directors of Turf Tonics Ltd. “Until now, getting air into the greens whilst maintaining the playing surface has been an impossible task” says Colin. Having seen a new machine available that claimed to revolutionise how Turf Managers on golf courses, sports fields and landscape companies think about aerification practices, the team at Turf Tonics researched and were impressed with the Air2G2. Impressed enough to purchase not just one, but two of these machines to have as part of their portfolio, they can be hired for days or weeks,

38

with or without an operator and are in demand from a number of local golf courses and sports clubs. The Air2G2 was the winner of the 2015 Innovation Award from the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA). The Air2G2 injects air into the soil profile and is the only machine on the market today that utilises air injection technology. Greens can be fully aerated, with air being injected to depths of up to 12 inches and have play continue as if no maintenance work had been carried out. That is how to keep your membership happy – greens in top condition and minimal disruption to the course. Amongst the services provided by Turf Tonics as well as aeration are soil treatments, eradication of disease, course renovations, consultancy and training. Working on not only Golf Courses, but professional Football Clubs, Cricket and Bowls Greens – they can help with an array of sports playing surfaces. Local, knowledgeable and passionate about the best finish possible the Turf Tonics team are happy to come and talk to you about specific needs for your club. With The Grove (host to British Masters 2016), Harrow School, Moor Park GC, Burnham Beeches GC and Wycombe Wanderers FC amongst their list of clients you will be in great company. Chef Laurie Gear Spring Recipe & Kitchen News

A

pril is a time of great excitement within the kitchen. It signals the start of a fantastic selection of fresh produce - crab, morels, rocket and English watercress will all begin to come into their own. Wild garlic will fill the hedgerows alongside primroses and tender nettle tops breaking cover for spring. April brings Easter this year and the traditional time to celebrate English lamb. As an alternative to a classic Sunday roast preparation why

not try this recipe to add a new dimension, perfect for that special family gathering, with the wild garlic adding a kick of flavour to your mashed potatoes. Although the salt crust is not edible, it imparts a lovely scented flavour to the lamb and keeps it beautifully moist.

Leg of English Lamb cooked in a Salt Crust, Spring Greens, Wild Garlic Pomme Purée Serves Four Ingredients 1 leg of English lamb 6 slices of day old white bread with crust removed 4 sprigs of flat leaf parsley 3 sprigs of tarragon 1 egg and 1 yolk beaten

Pomme Purée 1½kg Maris Piper potatoes 100 – 140g butter (cut into cubes) 300ml full-fat milk (hot) 6 tbsp double cream 6 good handful of wild garlic salt and freshly ground black pepper 400g spring greens (trimmed, washed and sliced into large shreds) 25g butter

Salt Dough 250g fine table salt 400g coarse sea salt 1kg plain flour 2 egg whites 400ml of lukewarm water 3 sprigs of rosemary, thyme and sage (roughly chopped) Method

1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degreesC. 2. Season the lamb leg and sear until golden in a roasting pan. Remove and allow to cool. 3. Place the bread into a food processor with the parsley and tarragon and whizz to make fine green breadcrumbs. 4. Roll your lamb leg in the breadcrumbs pressing them on firmly. 5. For the salt dough, place all the ingredients into a large bowl and work together by hand. Knead for a couple of minutes and then leave to rest for at least two hours. 6. Using a little flour roll out your salt dough to approx. 1cm thick. 7. Place the lamb in the centre of the dough and fold it over to wrap and seal the meat completely. 8. Brush the beaten egg and yolk over the dough to glaze it. 9. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes. 10. Remove from oven and leave to rest for 40 minutes. Pomme Purée 1. Peel the potatoes and cut into even size dice so they all cook at the same time, which is about 12-15 minutes. 48 APRIL 2017

2. Drain well. Then mash the potatoes very thoroughly or press them through a potato ricer. They should be completely lump free. 3. Gradually add the butter into the mix until it starts to look shiny. Then add the hot milk slowly. The potato should become a soft velvety purée. 4. Quickly blanch the wild garlic in boiling salted water. Remove and place into a bowl of iced water, which helps retain the beautiful green colour. 5. Lightly squeeze the wild garlic, but retain some of the moisture. 6. Purée the wild garlic leaves and fold them under your previously prepared pomme purée. Season to taste with some salt and freshly ground pepper. 7. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and add salt – steam the spring greens for a couple of minutes until just cooked but still with vibrant green colour. 8. Add a little butter to serve. To Serve Cut open the crust, remove the leg and carve generous slices. Serve with lamb gravy, the steamed spring greens and creamed potato with wild garlic.

Spring Lunch Tasting Offer To celebrate the arrival of Spring we invite readers to join us for - a complimentary glass of refreshing Rhubarb Bellini upon arrival, to accompany our Lunch Tasting Menu. TOASTED Motor company praised after giving hundreds of pounds to save school Breakfast Club

P

latts Motor Company has stepped in to help keep a school’s breakfast club running. The Hyundai dealership in Wooburn Moor is donating more than £500 this year after learning the early-morning club at The Highcrest Academy in High Wycombe was in danger of having to close due to lack of funds. Jon Jones, Dealer Principal, said: “We were thrilled to be able to help the students in this way. We already had a tie up with Highcrest with Hyundai’s Skills for the Future business awards scheme, so this seemed a natural extension.” More than 100 students attend the free club each day. Delighted Vice Principal Emma Bowden said: “This was a wonderful gesture from Platts that is really appreciated by our students, their families and our staff. “Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day and, yet, for whatever reason students don’t always have time to grab something to eat before they leave for school. This therefore gives them a great start to their day. “Without Platts’ donation, this club would either have had to fold or had to charge.”

The story of SURVIVAL

“The hour of departure has arrived, and we go our separate ways, I to die, and you to live. Which of these two is better only God knows.” - Socrates

ometimes a book comes along and makes you re-evaluate the way you see human life, what it’s worth and what it means. Centaur, a memoir and collaboration between the former jockey Declan Murphy and debut author Ami Rao, is one such book. A poignant account of coping with your own death when you are not dead. Spurred by a love of horses and riding, Declan Murphy became one of the notable jockeys of his generation. On one fateful day at the final hurdle at Haydock Park Declan would face his most difficult challenge. With his skull shattered in twelve places, he was believed to be dead and the last rites were read, but he survived. Defying medical thinking too, only eighteen months’ later he would race once again. It has been 23 years since the accident, and Declan is now ready to share his story with us with the help of Ami Rao. Declan has entrusted his life story and by extension his life and memories to Ami and has been set free from the past. Join Chorleywood Bookshop for two incredible evenings, the first a remarkable evening with a remarkable man, takes place on Wednesday 26th April. ‘Centaur’ is a story like no other, it is a story of triumph, fear, love and loss and ultimately, it is the story of hope, and of life. The following evening, Thursday 27th April, we have Sunday Times Bestselling

author Claire Mackintosh, whose new novel ‘I See You’ is an edge of your seat, page turning psychological thriller, not to be missed. Clare’s debut novel ‘I LET YOU GO’, has sold more than 600,000 copies to date. Clare, a former police officer writes with knowledge, experience and a unique insight into the criminal mind. Reader, you know that feeling… that feeling when the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and a slight shiver runs up your spine, but you don’t quite know why. It’s because someone’s watching you and you have no idea. On a crowded train in London, a man stands watching a woman, but it’s not just one woman he’s watching... What would you do, if on your daily commute, you find a photo of yourself in the classifieds, no information, just a phone number and a website address? Is it really you? Is it a joke? Or is it something more sinister? Ideal for fans of Paula Hawkins ‘Girl on the Train’ and Peter James. Ready for your

GETAWAY?

The Easter and Summer holidays are nearly here and some of you have already booked a well-deserved break with your children. You may have booked flights, accommodation and catering arrangements.

B

ut have you agreed the holiday plan with your former partner? Separated parents sometimes do not plan and agree holiday arrangements in advance, focussing instead on the day to day contact during term time. So what happens during half-terms, Easter and Christmas breaks, and on birthdays? It is important to plan ahead. So why not prepare a list of all the relevant school holidays; birthdays (including parent’s birthdays); Mother’s Day and Father’s Day? Use this list well in advance to agree a fair and achievable annual holiday plan with your former partner. If a small amount of time is taken in advance to plan, disagreements can be avoided during the course of the year. But if you did not plan or if conflict arises, what are your options? 1. If you did not plan ahead, contact the other parent sooner rather than later to seek agreement. This includes providing your planned accommodation and contact details for the trip. 2. If there is a disagreement, try to step back and view the situation from the other parent’s point of view. If they have a particular concern or issue about your proposed holiday, try to be flexible. If you show you have considered their interest, rather than just your desire to have a holiday with the children alone, your proposal may be more acceptable to them. 3. Focus on the children. The holiday should be about creating a happy time and experience for the children with each of their parents. 4. If there is no urgency, but an agreement is difficult to reach, there are several dispute resolution options are available to parents without the need of the court. You should always seek legal advice from a qualified professional at an

60 APRIL 2017

early stage to explore your options. 5. However, if your former partner unreasonably withholds consent or withdraws consent, and you face a sudden risk of not being able to go on a holiday with your children, you can make an application to the family courts for a specific issue order. This should be your last result as litigation can be expensive and could result in long-term acrimony between you. Separated parents can sometimes find it difficult to accept they face a future which requires them to reach decisions jointly and to communicate about the general upbringing of their children. Coming to terms with it early on and adopting a flexible, pragmatic approach is a key part of ensuring their children’s continued stability and happiness. A VERY SPECIAL NIGHT in aid of hospice care

With scintillating performances from West End stars and sparkling prizes courtesy of The Diamond Trust, the Musical Masquerade Gala Dinner promises an effervescent evening of entertainment – all in aid of the specialist and unique Hospice at Home care offered by Rennie Grove Hospice Care.

F

rom 7pm on Saturday 20 May, an opulent marquee set in the stunning grounds of Penn House near Amersham will transport you to Venice via the West End, with guests dressed in black tie with optional mask or feathers. A quartet of musicians with impressive solo singing careers spanning opera, musical theatre, concerts and recording will be the highlight of the night, which also boasts a champagne reception and elegant three-course dinner with wine. Headline sponsors of the event, The Diamond Trust, are contributing to the high-class auction, offering a ‘Ladies That Lunch’ voucher which will give the lucky recipient and a few of their friends the chance to attend an elegant lunch at The Diamond Trust’s sumptuous office complete with a fascinating talk about diamonds. The Berkhamsted-based family business with a four generation heritage and roots in Hatton Garden is also providing another glittering prize. Guests will have the chance to win a Magnum of Bollinger and two of the company’s handmade crystal glasses with sparkling stems. All guests need to do is guess the number of ‘diamonds’ which will be displayed in a large Martini glass. The event is a first for Rennie Grove, which needs to raise £7.2 million each year to provide 24/7 responsive care in patients’ homes at no cost to the thousands of patients who need that care. Jane Foy, Philanthropy Manager for Rennie Grove, explained: “Every hour there is a man, woman or child relying on our service to help with anything from pain relief to support after bereavement. Every hour of nursing care costs £25 and we’re hoping that our Musical Masquerade will raise enough to fund 1,500 hours of our specialist care in patients’ homes.” The charity is facing unprecedented demand for its service in Bucks and needs to recruit additional nurses. Managing Director of The Diamond Trust, Mr Vivian Watson, said: “The Diamond Trust is proud to support this event and help raise essential funds for

Rennie Grove. We believe our involvement with such a worthwhile cause will help provide more nurses where they are needed.” From 1 April tickets cost £95 each with tables of 10 available at £950. Bubbles of fun for

EVERYONE!

Bubble Rush is coming to Bucks and Herts – a family-friendly, 5k fun run through bubble stations bursting with coloured, foamy bubbles!

E

veryone is invited to join this fun-filled, frothy event in aid of The Hospice of St Francis. It’s a great day out, suitable for all the family from tots to teens and grownups to grandparents. Come as a family, join up with friends and be sure to dress up in the special Bubble Rush T-shirt, colourful tutus and sunglasses for a fantastic, memorable experience. There’s a choice of two dates and two locations. Bubble Rush Herts is returning to Gadebridge Park, Hemel Hempstead, on Sunday April 30th and Bubble Rush Bucks is coming to Bucks for the first time on Sunday July 9th in Lowndes Park, Chesham. Ten-year-old Ross (pictured right with his dad, Simon), from Berkhamsted, who took part last year said: “The Bubble Rush is really amazing! There is so much foam at each bubble station that me and my dad nearly disappeared! You get really bubbly and it was a great way to raise money for the place where my Grandma was looked after. I can’t wait to do it again!” Not only will you have the best time by running, walking or dancing in the frothy foam, you’ll also feel great knowing that by taking part you will be helping to raise funds for The Hospice of St Francis to provide care and support when it matters most to patients and their families facing life-limiting illnesses in Herts and Bucks. Fran Martin, Events Manager at the Hospice commented, “We were overwhelmed by the popularity of Bubble Rush last year. It’s the only event of its type for miles around and I’d urge families, friends and fun-loving individuals to sign up as soon as possible to guarantee their place. “Of course the event is all about having bubbles of fun but it’s also about raising as much money as we can for our Hospice, allowing us to provide care for over 2,000 people affected by life-limiting illness in our community. Last year’s event raised a staggering £132,000

64 APRIL 2017

thanks to the generosity of the participants and this year we’d love to better that figure!” Sign up now at stfrancis.org.uk/ bubblerush . It costs just £25 for adults, £7.50 for children and under 1s are free! Everyone is asked to raise what they can in sponsorship to help fund patient care at The Hospice of St Francis.

Help us complete our Therapeutic Sanctuary We are currently working to finish our garden area, a key part of our new hospice. The many windows in the new hospice will allow our garden to be enjoyed from inside as well as outside, bringing enjoyment to all of our patients.

O

ur gardens will provide a break from the hospice environment; research has shown that people have a positive reaction to nature. For many people, being in nature and interacting with the natural world, brings a sense of peace, tranquillity, and feelings of connectedness - with self, others and a higher power. We believe the garden will be vital to the wellbeing of our patients. Gardens reduce stress and promote a sense of wellbeing. This leads to measurable psychological, physiological, and behavioral benefits, such as reduced anxiety, sadness, and other negative moods, lower blood pressure and improved immune functioning, and better compliance with treatment protocol.

66 APRIL 2017

Our gardens have been designed to fully stimulate and engage senses. It is not just a garden to enjoy from a distance, patients will be able to pick herbs, plant bulbs and become involved in garden maintenance. There will also be private areas for families to spend time together and talk, as well as walks that patients and families can go on. We currently have ÂŁ40,000 to invest in our gardens but need to spend ÂŁ60,000 to achieve our full ambition. Please help us if you can. A wooded wonderland. New adventure play park at Stonor opened March 2017

W

illiam and Ailsa Stonor are keen to ensure that Stonor Park continues to be a destination for the whole family to enjoy, they wanted to create somewhere that is safe and engaging for the youngsters, hence the concept of the adventure Park was conceived. Timber play, the brilliant people behind the Diana, Princess of Wales, Playground in Hyde Park, were invited to create a play area that would enhance the ambience of Stonor Park whilst ensuring the design was sympathetic to the wood and park land. The brief was to create a stimulating and fun environment for all children up to the age of 15. For the younger children, Stonor Park have created a play area with a raised play house and slide surrounded by soft sand, leading to the water pump where children can divert water through channels and water wheels. Plus see-saw, wobble dish, rocking fallow deer (a nod to the fallow deer roaming the park) and swings are close by. Further into the woods older children will see the wooden climbing structure that leads to a rope climbing forest, connecting to a tree house with slide. A 50 metre zip wire and tunnels adding to their fun. Wonder Woods is located on the edge of woodland, the wooden and steel structures are designed to embrace the grassed landscape, and as new saplings take root and grow this truly becomes a wooded wonderland. Lots of seating has been created close by including picnic tables and benches, with some natural seating made from parts of an enormous sycamore tree felled in Stonor Park. The Pit Stop café is close by too, offering coffee, drinks and artisan snacks for the whole family. Bathrooms and baby changing facilities are adjacent to the café. 70 APRIL 2017

William Stonor said “we trialled the play area last October, for the few weeks we were open the reviews were very encouraging. Several visitors wrote positive comments in their Trip Advisor reviews. Our own three children are certainly enjoying this new addition to the landscape and we are very confident that it will also be a big hit with our visitors.”

2017 Opening Times: Open Wednesdays to Sundays Pricing: Adults: £6, Junior (5-15 yrs): £6, Child (2-4 yrs): £4, 0-2 yrs: Free. Highlights of the programme include: TARYN SIMON (MASTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY) Taryn Simon will present Image Atlas, a work created in collaboration with programmer Aaron Swartz, which investigates cultural differences and similarities by indexing top image results for given search terms across local engines throughout the world. DAVID MACH

11th May – 7th July 2017

Solo exhibition

Scottish artist David Mach’s solo exhibition at Griffin Gallery on 11th May will be his first new newspaper installation for fifteen years.

PHOTOGRAPHY PETER SEARLE

T

urner prize nominated Mach will construct a gargantuan installation from 30-tonnes of newspaper. Mach’s installation will look like a wave of paper, exploding through one of the gallery walls, and cascading through the room. Mach’s past installations have engulfed objects whole such as cars, furniture and airplanes. The large-scale piece will create an organic volume of colour and texture, characteristic of Mach’s work. The installation will be largely improvised, and will take shape while it is being installed. Mach will start work on the installation from April 24th, with the three week installation period open for viewing to the public and live streamed for all to see. Mach’s last newspaper installation Bangers n Mash was exhibited at the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow in 2002. Mach’s most recent worldwide solo exhibitions include Hong Kong (Opera Gallery, 2012) and New York (Forum Gallery, 2013). Mach’s artistic style is based on flowing assemblages of mass-produced objects. Typically, these include magazines, newspapers,

74 APRIL 2017

match sticks and coat hangers. Mach has also produced iconic public sculpture including Out of Order (1989) in Kingston Upon Thames, a series of 12 red telephone boxes tipped on their side and Big Heids, (1999) in Lanarkshire, a tribute to the steel industry, using three upturned shipping containers weighing 18 tons. David Mach on why he started his magazine sculptures: “Everybody at this time was making permanent works. Sculpture that was a solid form, welded together. It was formed out of wood or plastics, materials that could be put together permanently in some way and certainly ending up as some kind of object. I didn't want to make objects. I wanted to make something that would certainly appear solid but that couldn't be lifted up and carried away like an object.” THE DETAILS PRIVATE VIEW | 10th May, 6-9pm Griffin Gallery,The Studio Building, 21 Evesham Street, W11 4AJ Telephone 0208 424 3239 email info@griffingallery.co.uk www.griffingallery.co.uk Opening Times: Monday-Friday 10-5, Saturday 12-5

TRAVEL

Why we love

GOLF HOTELS Golfers, we know that some things are really important to you on your golfing holidays: to feel pampered on and off the fairways, to play course layouts that offer fun as well as dazzling scenery, comfortable accommodation, service which makes you feel special, not to mention plenty of activities that you can pick and choose from.

T

he beauty of our favourite golf resorts is that they aren’t just for golfers: they are gorgeous 5* hotels in their own right, surrounded by a worldclass golf course and come packed with a range of facilities such as a spa, fine dining, superb levels of service and beach access, meaning that non-players can have an equally wonderful holiday with plenty to enjoy. Whilst we’re all for short flights and familiar territory - and there are some wonderful courses in Europe - sometimes it’s well worth travelling long haul to play in the sun during our winter, or combine with hiking, snorkelling or wildlife-watching. Various international tournaments take place throughout the year all around the world, allowing you to combine your play with competition of a professional nature. Rental clubs at resorts include some of the hottest new brands on the market and give you the perfect opportunity to practice with new equipment. Tuition is available at most resorts meaning that you may even come home a better player than you left. Our top tips for getting the most from a golf holiday: • Book a stay-and-play package which either allows unlimited play or at least includes a certain number of rounds in the price. • Treat yourself to a caddy where in many locations they are affordable, superpositive about your game and can be very helpful at reading putts on strange greens. • Choose and book famous courses and popular destinations well in advance to guarantee tee time on your preferred course. Portugal and Spain are quite rightly two of Europe’s best destinations for golf. They both have world-class courses, a reliable year-round climate, require only

88 APRIL 2017

short flights from the UK and have beautiful resorts. The Algarve in Portugal is very accessible with regular flights and plenty of sunshine whilst Lisbon is just as easy to reach and could easily be combined with a few days exploring the city. Stretching from Malaga down towards Sotogrande, the Costa del Sol and Malaga regions of Spain are bursting with fantastic courses. Away from the resorts the local areas have pretty marinas, sandy beaches and traditional restaurants. Finca Cortesin is one of our favourite resorts in Spain. Located inland near Marbella, the course is home to the Volvo World Matchplay Championship and is ranked in the top five golf courses by Golf World magazine. It has a stunning Mediterranean setting amidst typical Spanish forest and perfectly manicured bermuda grass. With a demanding par 72, choice of five different tee positions and a superb club house, this course is perfectly suited to players of all handicaps. The hotel itself has a grand design inspired by traditional Andalusian architecture with big, bright luxurious spaces, manicured gardens, a spa, four pools, tennis courts and

Travel Clinic

a beach club. The restaurant’s outside terrace offers spectacular views to the sea and is highly rated for its food. Our recommendation for Portugal is the beautiful Penha Longa resort near Lisbon. Situated within a 545-acre national park on the southern Sintra Mountains, Penha Long is nestled into a breathtakingly beautiful location just 30 minutes from Lisbon airport. There is a 5* hotel, 19th century palace, 27-hole golf course and spa. Foodies are well catered for with a great selection of restaurants including Japanese and Italian, together with a 2-Michelin star chef in residence. The golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr and offers bold drives, courageous approaches and hosts the Portuguese Open. ASIA AND MAURITIUS Thailand may not initially strike you as a golfing option but it has some great courses and so much else besides. Our favourite resort is the Kirimaya Golf Resort & Spa near Khao Yai. Lying on the edge of Khao Yai National Park, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jack Nicklaus-designed course ranges from 4,875 yards to an incredible 7,115 yards and with a single track layout, you’ll feel like the only person on the course. The resort’s location offers the perfect opportunity for finding piece of mind with wildlife-watching excursions, nature trails, spa treatments and stargazing all on offer. Located just two hours from Bangkok, the hotel itself has Asian-fusion style spacious rooms with all mod cons in a delightfully natural setting. For those who like a real challenge, playing the Legend course in Mauritius has to be on any golfer’s list. Opened in 1994 and designed by South African champion Hugh Baiocchi, it is set in the heart of an indigenous forest and has Tif Dwarf grasses for green perfection. It can be played when staying at one of our favourite resorts on the island, Shangri La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa, which offers an unrivalled standard of privacy and personalisation. The resort also has its own spectacular 18-hole Bernhard Langer championship golf course set on a private island, Ile aux Cerfs, which is complimentary for guests.

PROUD TO BE WORKING WITH BADGEMORE PARK AND HARLEYFORD GOLF CLUB We’re delighted to be sponsoring a hole at Badgemore Park golf course, widely regarded as one of the friendliest clubs in Oxfordshire. The 18-hole parkland course was founded in 1972 and designed by Robert Sandow; since then it has established itself as a welcoming club with great play and is a beautiful setting for events. For membership enquiries visit www.badgemorepark.com. We are also working closely with Harleyford Golf Club, located just outside Marlow on the Henley Road. With an even longer history dating back to the 12th century, Harleyford has a truly stunning setting along the River Thames with a 6,714 yard par 72 course. See for yourself at www.harleyfordgolf.co.uk.

Question: Do I need a visa? Answer: For British passport holders the first place to start is the British government’s website at www.gov. uk/foreign-travel-advice. Here you can easily search for the country you are visiting and click on ‘Entry Requirements’ to find out exactly what you need in terms of visas plus information about passport validity requirements. Other websites are available but many charge fees to procure visas which can often be obtained entirely free of charge. Non-British passport holders should always check with their embassy.

Special Offers 15% off Executive Suites and Executive Sea Suites at Finca Cortesin in Spain for bookings made before 27 April 2017. Subject to availability. Please note that this offer does not apply during Easter Week (7-17 April 2017). 30% off Deluxe Ocean View rooms at Shangri La’s Le Touessrok from April to September 2017. Prices from £1,699 per person for 7 nights in May 2017 including return British Airways economy flights, resort transfers and green fees at Ile aux Cerfs golf course.

Next month: Elephant Hills is Thailand’s first luxury jungle tented camp and one of our absolute favourite resorts. Great for families and grown-ups alike, it’s the perfect way to get up close and personal with these wonderful animals. FOCUS on adventure

Philip North-Coombes is a critically acclaimed photographer who’s client list includes the BBC, Berghaus, Speedo and Sebago. His assignments take him around the world – from the oceans of Hawaii to the barren beauty of Iceland and the stark grandeur of Mount Everest.

P

hilip, who’s based in Aston Rowant has launched Tao Photo Tours to offer keen photographers the opportunity to accompany him to his favourite photographic locations and learn how to approach photography from his unique professional perspective. He’s running a 20 day photo expedition to Everest Base Camp in November this year. The expedition will retrace the route he took to make the Everest + documentary for the BBC. It will be a unique journey for a very small group of photographers through a diverse country of landscapes and cultures. In 2018 Philip is returning to Namibia for 3 photo tours. Namibia is the most mesmerising destination in Africa – with mountainous dunes, extraterrestrial landscapes, merciless deserts and some of the most impressive wildlife – from the endangered black rhino to the regal oryx and offers unparalleled photographic opportunities. These tours are available to book by anyone with a keen interest in photography. With a maximum of 8 per tour the spaces are limited and as such, do book early to avoid disappointment. Each tour will be a creative adventure with the feel and structure of a professional photo shoot – where enthusiasts will learn how to get the most out of their photography, as Philip says “the adventure last days but the experience and skills are for life.” Philip dedicates much of his spare time to work with frontline charities and will be running the London Marathon this year to support IFAW-International fund for animal welfare. The Spirit of ADVENTURE A t the start of the 1970s Paolo Dini happened to find himself in a small sailmaker’s workshop during a trip to Maine, where the sail from an old 18th-century clipper caught his eye. Its inscription read: Paul & Shark. It was fate. In 1975 Dini family launched Paul & Shark, the sports fashion brand with a collection inspired by the world of sailing and based on its elegance, performance and spirit of adventure. Their aim has always been to seek excellence both in the quality of its products and the manufacture of its materials, guaranteeing a rigorous selection process based on exacting standards. As a result they create smart casual sportswear, combining technical fabrics with elegant and stylish details all made in Italy. Every aspect of production take place within the company, from producing yarns to making the boxes used to package the clothing. Over the years the company has expanded greatly to become a comprehensive luxury sportswear range, appreciated by the fans of Italian fashion and high-performance technical materials. Today Paul & Shark is available throughout the world in 73 different countries.

Your prostate HealtH Do you know the signs? Mr Jacques Roux, Consultant Urologist at Spire Harpenden, speaks to us about the importance of prostate health.

“prostate health can easily be assessed by your Gp by taking an appropriate history and doing a general examination”

Mr Jacques Roux is a Consultant Urologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital.

P

rostate cancer has become the most common forms of male cancer. It is increasingly being discussed by those who value their health or the health of their partners. The time has come to be open about the prostate and associated health issues. I am heartened that more and more patients feel empowered to discuss their prostates with their GPs and ask for their prostate health to be evaluated. The prostate’s purpose is not only for reproduction but also forms an integral part of the urinary system. It is commonly described as a ‘male only’ walnut shaped and sized gland situated at the base of the bladder encasing the urethra. It is checked via the rectum and should be smooth, soft and not tender when examined. Most prostates will increase in size over time and as it gets larger it may cause a slowing down of the urinary stream. In extreme circumstances it causes the inability to pass urine which can be very painful. It can also become inflamed and cause significant discomfort around the perineum, penis and testes or when passing urine. Although prostate cancer predominantly effects older men (aged 65-79), around 25% of cases will occur in men younger than 65 years old. When caught early, prostate cancer can be treated very effectively. There are no specific symptoms that will indicate early prostate cancer and men can

102 APRIL 2017

often present late. About 1 out of 8 men will develop prostate cancer. Having a father or brother with prostate cancer more than doubles the risk of developing prostate cancer. If you are at risk of getting prostate cancer, concerned or notice any difficulty in passing urine you should see your doctor. Prostate health can easily be assessed by your GP by taking an appropriate history and doing a general examination which will include examining the prostate. A blood test called PSA (prostate specific antigen) can be performed before or a few days after the examination. Your doctor may also request a urine sample to check for an infection. If there is an irregularity on any of your initial tests you will be referred to an Urologist for a further assessment. The Urologist may ask you to perform a urine flow test and may do a scan to see how well your bladder empties. If indicated your Urologist will request further investigations. It does not mean that every man should be tested for prostate cancer. It is recommended that an individualised strategy for early detection depending on risk factors might be offered to a well informed man with at least 10-15 years of life expectancy. I am always happy to discuss prostate health with patients or health professionals either individually or in groups.

Fat loss

FUNDAMENTALS Three important considerations in successfully losing body fat

T

he fat loss industry, or more commonly known as the weight loss industry, is a billion pound global titan. There is a conglomeration of programs, DVDs, diets and services out there, which all believe they are there to serve those seeking thinner thighs and losing the ‘spare tyre’ around the waist. However as aforementioned in previous issues of this magazine, systems are glamorized and new fads and gimmicks are created that push and pull at emotions and insecurities in order to make sales. Despite what some people may claim, there are three important fundamentals that apply if you want to successfully lose body fat and keep it off.

1. Calories Are King If you want to burn body fat, one thing holds true above everything else and that is you need to burn more calories than you consume. Many people preach about the consumption of quality of over quantity and whilst we should always be aiming to maintain a balanced diet of wholesome foods, it’s still possible to gain weight consuming a healthy diet. What this means though is that you can still eat a balanced diet and enjoy the foods you love, provided you don’t go over the top with your calories. It may take some practice initially but it’ll help maintain a positive relationship with food in the long run. Top Tip: Focus on eating good quality food but don’t fear social occasions in the process. Just be aware that some foods may contain more calories than you assume which may inhibit your progress.

2.Strength Training Usually when people want to burn body fat, they want to change their body shape and create a firmer, more ‘toned’ body. Whilst burning more calories than you consume is a 104 APRIL 2017

fundamental process to losing weight, strength training, for both men and women, can have a dramatic and positive effect on an individual’s shape through creating that ‘tone’ that many people desire which can’t be achieved through dieting alone. Top Tip: Want to change your body image faster? Start strength training 3-4 times a week to get truly beneficial results in a shorter time frame.

BOOK YOUR COMPLIMENT ARY STRATEGY CALL NOW

3. Consistently Follow The Above Whilst one bad day may not be the end of the World or the end to your progress, just one day exercising and encompassing positive eating habits is simply not enough to warrant results. You have to be committed to applying the two fundamentals above, week in week out. It’s not about getting things perfect but ensuring that the good days/weeks outweigh the bad. Top Tip: Don’t worry about the minutiae and just focus on the basics. Track your progress and changes to appreciate how far you’ve come and to ensure you keep moving forward. Finally, find someone to keep you accountable if necessary. If you apply these three fundamentals then over the course of time you’ll not only notice the fat diminish, but you’ll feel strong, more confident and improve your health in the process too. Celebrity trainer and award winning author, Christianne Wolff launched her new Body Rescue Slimming Clubs around the UK, in January 2017

A

nd local Liz Clark from Gerrards Cross will be running her new Body Rescue Slimming club in Gerrards Cross and Chalfont St. Peter starting Monday 24th April 2017. The Body Rescue Plan, is a multi-award winning weight loss plan that helps you lose up to 2.5 stone in 12 weeks. Christianne says ‘The Body Rescue Plan is very different from any other slimming club, as we only take on small groups, and we help with mindset issues around emotional eating or self sabotage, so that the plan then has amazing weight loss results’ The Body Rescue Plan courses give you an online membership, where you get meditations to do in between your sessions, as well as exercise, mindset and recipe videos, recipe plans and shopping lists. This plan leaves no stone un-turned. Liz says ‘I lost 2.5 stone on The Body Rescue Plan, dropped 3 dress sizes and I was so amazed at how brilliant I felt. I feel so passionate about The Body Rescue Plan, that I decided I wanted to share this knowledge in teaching my own classes. All my friends noticed how much better I looked and want to come to my new classes too! I got to the end of 2015 feeling tired, very overweight and lethargic. So I embarked on the 12 week Body Rescue Plan. Yes, I wanted to lose weight and feel slimmer, but I also wanted to make a lifestyle change that was easy, doable and would fit in with my busy life. Working, self-employed and a single mum, my life was demanding. Drinking and eating late was a general routine but things had to change. Within the first week, the daily encouragement I received spurred me on to really embrace the simplicity of the plan. No calorie counting, no measuring, no fancy recipes or weird foods to eat. Just good simple, basic but tasty food ideas and plenty of it. I lost 8lbs by week 2 and loved discovering new ways to cook healthy, delicious food. My time in the kitchen halved, my energy levels went through the roof and I began to feel like a whole new person very literally overnight. The plan is not like other weight loss clubs. It’s just good, clean living which rejuvenates your body instantly. No sugar carvings, no longing for the guilty pleasures we crave and an energy not felt in decades. Not to mention the sound sleeping I was having night after night. I have had so many compliments from friends and family – it’s all down to Christianne’s support and The Body Rescue Plan.’ The Body Rescue Slimming Club will be having a FREE launch party on Thursday 20th April at Gerrards Cross Memorial Centre at 7.30pm where you can sample some of the Liz before & after delicious food and talk with Christianne and your local body rescue mentor Liz. THE DETAILS Courses and party must be booked so to enquire further please go to www.thebodyrescueplangerrardscross.com or contact liz@thebodyrescueplan.com or 07949 144 409.

Non Surgical Facial Rejuvenation – You Don’t Need the Knife! AT ROSEBANK FACE & SKIN

The latest figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) indicates that more people are choosing non-surgical procedures to delay more invasive options. But, is it for everyone?

A

ward Winning Dentist from Rosebank Dental Practice, Medical Aesthetics Practitioner and Lead Trainer of KT Medical Aesthetics Academy, Dr Julia Bernardo talks about non-surgical facial rejuvenation and its indications. WHAT DOES NON-SURGICAL FACIAL REJUVENATION PROCEDURES INVOLVE? Non-surgical facial rejuvenation is an umbrella term used to group a variety of medical aesthetic procedures that resurface and rejuvenate skin by improving the appearance of lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, age spots, hyperpigmentation and a variety of other signs of ageing. The most common procedures include wrinkle relaxing injections, hyaluronic acid injections, chemical peels, micro-needling and medical skin care. The exact procedure used to treat your skin will depend on your concerns and target area.

WRINKLE RELAXING AND HYALURONIC ACID INJECTIONS Over time, the quality of your skin changes due to reduced production of collagen and elastin fibres by the fibroblasts cells, repetitive muscle movements such as frowning and squinting, loss of facial volume and decline of the body’s own supply of hyaluronic acid. Consequently, the skin becomes drier, thinner, rougher and with less elasticity. Hyaluronic acid is a major component of the skin and it is involved in tissue repair and in the transport of essential nutrients. Hyaluronic acid injections, although used to replenish volume loss, it helps improving the skin elasticity and hydration, therefore giving a youthful appearance. Wrinkle relaxing injections with botulinum toxin type A are FDA and MHRA approved for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. They are commonly used to treat areas in the upper part of the face and are extremely effective at relaxing hyperactive muscles that causes lines and wrinkles. It is simple and relatively painless. CHEMICAL PEELS Chemical Peel is a medical procedure to exfoliate the skin outermost layer, stimulating new skin growth and regeneration. It is aimed to improve the skin texture, tone and appearance. Chemical Peels are classified by the depth of action into superficial, medium and deep peels. The

Wrinkle relaxing injections with botulinum toxin type A are FDA and MHRA approved for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. 110 APRIL2017

indication is dependant on individual assessment and it is case dependant. MICRO-NEEDLING Micro-needling consists of micro-perforations on the skin through a medical device. This activates fibroblasts, leading to a higher collagen and elastin production. Microchannels resulting from this technique also facilitate the penetration of active ingredients (i.e. hyaluronic acid and multivitamins) usually stopped by the epidermal barrier of the skin. Micro-needling is a safe, painless procedure which stimulates the skin at deeper level to repair and regenerate itself resulting in smoothier, healthier, more radiant and youthful skin. IS NON-SURGICAL FACIAL REJUVENATION FOR EVERYONE? Although non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures may not be for everyone, non-surgical procedures are an excellent option for those who wants to delay plastic surgery, wants a natural looking result and enhance body’s ability to repair itself, with the added benefits of lower costs and shorter recovery time. ARE THESE PROCEDURES ONLY INDICATED FOR THE AGED SKIN? The aforementioned procedures may also be indicated for the prevention of lines and wrinkles, improvement of skin conditions such as acne and acne scars, skin hyperpigmentation, which is not necessarily a condition of the aged skin. HOW DO I KNOW WHICH PROCEDURE IS RIGHT FOR ME? The right treatment for you should be advised by an experienced professional based on the description of your concerns during your skin consultation. This may involve a single procedure or a combination of procedures, which should be tailored around your preferences, budget and timings.

Mr Michael Gaunt

LOVE YOUR LEGS Ashamed of varicose veins or thread veins? Leading consultant vascular surgeon Michael Gaunt discusses how varicose veins can affect your long-term health and wellbeing.

We

all want to look good and how we care for our vascular health can play a major role in helping us achieve this. You may not initially associate varicose veins with your general health and wellbeing but when you consider that one person in four is affected in some way by varicose veins, it’s clear that simple procedures can make a big difference to a patient’s lifestyle.

Don’t ignore symptoms

Many of us choose to ignore the onset of symptoms, preferring to ‘cover-up and forget’ during the winter months. Sometimes the symptoms develop very slowly over years and you may be unaware that the changes in your legs are due to varicose veins, especially as they may not be particularly prominent or visible in some people.

Symptoms of varicose veins can include: • Aching, tired or heavy feeling in your legs • Painful throbbing, muscle cramping and swelling in your lower legs • Worsened pain after sitting or standing for a long time • Restless legs, especially at night • Persistent leg itching • Bleeding from varicose veins • Ulceration • Skin discolouration around the ankles

Self Help

You may find mild symptoms are helped by raising your legs, by wearing support stockings or regular movement.

What are the benefits of varicose vein treatment?

You’ll feel more positive about your legs and the unsightly, raised, bobbly varicose veins will be removed, alleviating your symptoms. Your circulation will improve and it should also help prevent further complications that varicose veins may cause. You’ll be glad to hear that modern treatments are minimally invasive and may be performed under local anaesthetic as a walk-in, walk-out procedure. Why go

NATURAL? O

ur team at Lorem strongly believe that there are many benefits to using natural remedies… Whether you are suffering with back pain, arthritis, and fibromyalgia or other aches and pains our first impulse is usually relieving the pain as fast as possible, this may come from reaching for a tablet or applying far too much of a topical product hoping that the more we apply the quicker the pain will disappear, when we know that all that happens is we wait around for the excess to dry or it absorbs into our clothing or bedsheets. With many people relying on medications, we don’t always check what we are putting into our body and the possible damage from that can occur from side effects, such as organ damage, stomach upsets, thinning the skin or taking additional medicine to deal with the side effects that occurred from the original one. You may find the relief you need from a variety of natural pain killers instead? Herbs and spices have been used for thousands of years to treat inflammation and other related conditions known as complementary. There continues to be more research and strong evidence for the benefits of natural therapies. Medical doctors are increasingly turning to natural pain relief and alternatives from acupuncture, yoga, magnetic bracelets and hypnosis to help their patients feel better.

The practice of Aromatherapy originated in Europe and has been practised since the early 1900s where essential oils are taken from plant flowers, leaves stalks, bark rind or roots. Many of us still or previously used natural methods to ease pain or discomfort from using clove bud in our mouth for toothache, a dock leaf for stinging nettles or a spoon of honey and lemon in hot water to soothe that sore throat. With all the modern day medicines that surround us we may not use this traditional methods as much, however they still work. We can be sceptical to indigenous medicines from around the world. Emu oil has been used originally for thousands of years by the aborigines of Australia, and that knowledge has been passed down for generations and spread to many other countries. Today the uses for Emu oil are becoming more popular as we look for natural alternatives to treat a variety of skin conditions and provide natural pain relief. The other benefit of massaging emu oil and essential oils into the skin is that massage therapy has been shown to boost levels of endorphins and serotonin the body’s natural pain killers and mood regulators. There are many natural remedies for providing pain relief and easing discomfort, however there are also lots of reasons why we should also pay attention to what we eat after all food is a sort of medicine. By eating a variety of foods which can provide the body with all vitamins and minerals our body needs to sustain our immune system. Remember, pain is the body’s signal that something is wrong. It may be temporary such as a strained muscle. But pain can also mean that you have a serious health problem that needs professional medical attention. - See more at: www.loremcare.co.uk/natural THE DETAILS Tel: 0845 62 56736

Why homeoWners Are WArming To solid roof ConservATories

M

any UK homeowners can be exasperated by badly designed and specified existing conservatories, complaining they are simply too hot in summer and too cold in winter. It is therefore important that if a double glazed glass conservatory is what is required, that it is expertly designed and installed by well-established conservatory experts so it can be used all year round thanks to heat reflective glass, an insulated base, a roof vent to release any heat build-up, plenty of ventilation and a high quality double glazing specification that keeps the cold out and warmth in. The alternative to a glass or polycarbonate roof, is an “insulated warm roof , better known as solid roofs with tiles. There is the traditional full blown extension option with either a flat roof or a timber pitched roof with heavy slate roof tiles, or nowadays there are several lightweight, yet incredibly robust aluminium solid roof options that each offers even better insulation than traditional

11 1 40 A APPRRIILL 22001177

roofs, plus with some systems there is a choice of attractive lightweight tiles in both aluminium and UPVC (the latter are more expensive, but aesthetically look like traditional slate tiles). Just like double glazed glass roofs, solid roofs can be installed on conservatories in a matter of days, as long as the existing base, windows and doors are structurally sound enough to take the heavier weight of an insulated solid roof. By opting for a solid roof, rather than a standard glass one, you will improve thermal and acoustic insulation. However, you do lose the natural daylight afforded by glass roofs, whilst gaining a structure that is more akin to an extension, hence why solid roof conservatories fall under the England and Wales Building Regulations. Both aluminium tiled and UPVC tiled solid roofs can be built in many conservatory styles including: Edwardian, Victorian, Lean-To or Bespoke conservatories to name but a few. The whole point of buying any modern conservatory is that you should be able to use it as and when you like. It can be incredibly annoying if it was not designed for 24/7 use, and thanks to not having enough ventilation, an insulated base or heat reflective glass, or is cold during the winter as the double glazing fitted was not of a sufficiently high specification. A solid “warm” roof offers even better roof insulation, primarily because it contains insulated plywood and rigid insulation board. Any loss of natural sunlight as a consequence of opting for a Warm Roof can be off-set by the inclusion of one or more double glazed Velux style roof windows or on some system, large double glazed fixed roof lights. These sloping roof windows keep you in close contact with the outside and afford views of the sky above. The Velux opening roof windows will also help ventilate the space which you will be particularly thankful for on hot summer days. If you already have a conservatory that is nowhere near as comfortable as you want it to be, then in all likelihood you’ll need to replace the entire structure (apart from the base and any walls) with one that has a Warm Roof or high specification double glazed roof, windows and doors. It simply is not sensible to put a highly thermally efficient new roof on top of non-thermally broken products, as all your heat will literally go out the window. If you do choose a solid roof instead of a double glazed one, you will possibly need Planning Permission, so make sure you check what permissions you are legally obligated to obtain (and how much they each will cost) before ordering a solid roof conservatory. If building a new solid roof conservatory onto a new foundation, you may not need planning if you are adding a warm roof structure under Permitted Development Rights, assuming a) the P.D. rights have not been withdrawn, and/or b) there are sufficient P.D. rights left to build the solid roof conservatory to the size you’d like it to be. If your dwelling is a “new build” developers sometimes

“if you do choose a solid roof instead of a double glazed one, you will possibly need Planning Permission”

place restrictions on them, so you would be wise to check your particular situation out. Solid Roof Conservatories are in the eyes of the law an extension, so Building Regulations Approval is required, whether you are building a new one, or having a glass roof replaced with a solid one. In the latter case, if your conservatory was built under planning permission, you will need to re-apply for planning, as you are changing from an exempt structure (i.e. a conservatory with a glass roof) to a non-exempt extension. If you would like a free design consultation with an experienced expert, contact Hazlemere Window Company on 01494 854266, who since 1985 have been manufacturing and installing double glazed conservatories and orangeries and also supply and fit solid roof conservatories. e know there are numerous ways to add personality to your home – but 3d flooring is certainly more daring than just block colour feature walls and novelty wallpaper. You can literally transform your floors into incredible works of art. The astonishing images appear life-like even when viewed from multiple angles. It's not just a picture, it's a large-scale art object , which fundamentally changes the idea of what flooring can do. Much like the 3D street art you see in major cities, it has now been brought into the home to much effect! Instead of being a background, the floor becomes the main detail. Automatically, all furnishings, walls and even lighting become a background for the 3D image. The wide range of colours and modern technologies allow the creation of unique self-levelling floors with panorama or 3D

pictures, created by designers according to your wishes and suitable for any interior. Choose your design carefully though… a 3D floor that gives the appearance of the floor collapsing from under you, is not for the faint-hearted or those with a nervous disposition! The technology of manufacturing 3D self-levelling floors requires highly skilled professionals. A high-quality and properly installed resin floor will delight you with its beautiful appearance, practicality, originality and uniqueness for many years to come. Building A luxuRy Swimming Pool To meeT youR needS Whether you’re looking for a high-end swimming pool with the latest technology or a more conservative design, Origin can work to your specification. The company has extensive experience producing award winning designs that meet the needs of a wide range of homeowners.

The Blueprint Range Origin’s Blueprint Range descends from the company’s heritage of simple timber buildings and offers customers a truly spectacular extension of their home. This entry level swimming pool presents an uncomplicated design that streamlines the building structure and finish, whilst still creating a place for you and your family to relax, keep fit and entertain. The range is fully customisable and Origin will work with you to ensure it includes all the elements for your dream swimming pool, whilst designing something that is in keeping with your family’s taste. It is available in a range of different sizes and building styles, so you can personalise the door and window layouts, whilst also selecting which extension modules best meet your needs.

Aldbury Blueprint The Aldbury Blueprint is a perfect example of 1 82 A 11 0 APPRRIILL 22001177

a popular Barn style building presented with the Blueprint range finishes. The swimming pool has all the charm of a country barn conversion and is suitable for any size garden, whilst remaining uncomplicated to keep costs down. The fully insulated building structure is finished in a timber weatherboard on the outside. This gives you flexibility over the design as it can be painted in a wide range of colours to suit even the most adventurous palate. The 8m long by 5m wide barn houses a 7.7m by 3m heated liner pool, perfect for maintaining an active lifestyle. It features a porch extension, enabling you to admire the garden on a frosty morning from the warmth of the pool house, or alternatively, the space can be opened up to entertain when hosting summer barbeques or parties. Internally, the pool house is light, relaxed and informal. It features a changing area, wet room shower, toilet and plant room. As opposed to more costly mosaic tiles, the pool chamber is finished in a specialist vinyl pool liner available in a range of colours and patterns. The walls of this pool house are finished with timber to avoid the additional costs that come with plastering and painting walls. All of these small choices make a big difference to the bottom line, but you are still left smiling every time you walk into your pool house.

Arena Blueprint The Arena Blueprint is similar to Origin’s popular Olympic design, but with the Blueprint range finishes. This streamlined and uncomplicated approach allows you to transform your property with a luxury swimming pool, whilst keeping within budget. The 8.6m long by 4.5m wide building houses an 8m by 3m heated liner pool, providing the perfect space for a challenging exercise regime. By simply substituting expensive features that are not a necessity to the pool house structure, you can reduce the cost of the overall project. For example, instead of aluminium bi-folding doors, the Arena Blueprint pool house features timber glazed sliding doors, which can also be opened up during the warmer summer months. Plus, instead of using porcelain tiles to surround the pool, rubberised flooring can be used to provide a safe and attractive finish.

why oRigin ARe diffeRenT Both of these designs demonstrate the small changes that can be made to a swimming pool design to ensure it meets your requirements, whilst sticking to a budget. The company will advise on the best ways to achieve your dream pool, whilst also showing examples of what can be accomplished. This will help bring your ideas to life. New Arrival in Store Light Years Ahead Fusing sleek minimalist looks with intelligent functionality, Cophenhagen Blinds are the new Danish designed soundless sunshading which can be programmed to follow the personal rhythm of your day. Available exclusively from Jack Brunsdon & Son, the blinds can be simply and easily controlled from a discreet wall panel or even a smartphone or tablet from anywhere in the world! Functionality Made from a beautiful soft touch material which diffuses harsh sunlight when open, thereby bringing tranquillity into your home, they also close more tightly than conventional Venetian blinds, allowing you to darken the room much more effectively too – making them especially suitable for bedrooms or TV rooms. Smart Technology The intelligent in-built technology monitors both the light and temperature levels so that the slats, which move silently thanks to the ultra-quiet motor, automatically open and close to prevent bleaching of the interior décor and minimise heat. You can use the app to control the blinds as a group or individually, level and tilt them as desired, set their favourite positions and plan scheduled movements throughout the day or week to fit your household routines.

Style Made to measure for the perfect fit, the blinds are available in black, white or silver and have no carrier strap enabling each 50mm slat to be easily removed for cleaning. Meanwhile, the wireless design, featuring just two simple weight buttons, adds to the super sleek finish.

The best seat in the house BY GABRIELLE FAGAN

You just know when you've found 'the one'. Supportive, and always there for you when you need comfort, a snuggle or just to relax. I'm not talking about a partner - at least, not a human one, but the sometimes more tricky matter of getting the right seating partner; a sofa. But with so much to consider, from size through to shape and colour, never mind sorting through a seemingly endless array of ranges, finding the perfect match for you and your home can be daunting.

P

eople often go to enormous lengths choosing a sofa, because it's the most important piece of furniture in a living room. It can literally make or break the look of a setting. A lot of life happens on a sofa, so it's worth taking time to find 'the one'.

Follow the experts' tips for a seatmatch made in heaven... GET THE MEASURE I'm a fan of sofas which are big enough to lounge around on and are super comfy, with deeper seat cushions than average, so they're inviting to curl up on. Top tips: Measure your room before shopping, so you choose a sofa to fit the space and scale of the room. When you have one in mind, make a paper template of it and lay it out in the room to help you visualise the reality of its size, as display sofas always look smaller in large showrooms. 124 APRIL 2017

Ensure it will fit, especially if there are awkward stairs or narrow doorways, although bolt-on arms or removable legs are solutions if space is tight. CHECK OUT PATTERN Don't be afraid to be adventurous and really push the boundaries when it comes to choosing seating - it's outdated to pick a matching sofa, armchair and footstool. Create an eclectic, customised look by mixing colours and patterns, so a sofa upholstered in a plain fabric could be paired with a leather armchair, or a patterned footstool. Top tips: Don't be led purely by design. Comfort is key, so try out a few before you decide. For instance, deep-seated sofas can be uncomfortable for short people, while those who love a squashy sofa for snoozing and sprawling will struggle with a lean, low-backed contemporary model. People are becoming more adventurous in their decor, so clashing statement patterns and bold colours are starring. Pair a sofa with a bold fabric design with a plain backdrop, or if you love bold wallpapers, create a feature wall first and then match the sofa's colour to the wall. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION In large rooms, small sofas can look lost. Generally, high-backed sofas with upholstered arms dominate more and need more space around them, while a low-back slimmer sofa can be more discreet, and won't block a view if placed in front of windows. L-shaped sofas can work well in a compact space, or act as room-dividers in an open plan area. Intricate fabric patterns and sofas customised with different details in piping, mixed fabrics or a choice of feet, are increasingly finding favour. While bold patterns bring a room to life, my preference is for large sofas upholstered in neutral tones or leather, which suit any decor scheme.

How to Make Most of a

SMALL KITCHEN P

A small kitchen doesn’t have to mean you miss out on anything – it simply means a little more planning in the early process. Sue Birch from KB studios shares her tips on how to make the most of a small space.

lanning – how do you use your kitchen? Some use it as an extension of their living space – perhaps for homework, or watching television. It’s all about planning properly, before you purchase a splash of paint or a tile! We usually spend a lot of time talking with our customers about how they want to use their new kitchen and what they would like to change about their old kitchen, this is a great place to start. Colour – light colours absolutely open up a space, whereas dark ones may be warmer, but will close in a wall. Use tester paints on the walls, as light changes throughout a day. It may mean that you end up using different shades on different walls to get the ‘same’ result. Also consider colour when buying your units. Again, white, light colours, reflective surfaces or lightly frosted fronts are your friend when trying to create space. Clutter – try and minimise what’s lying around the kitchen. If

126 APRIL 2017

you have something lovely you want to display, then find a dedicated area for it (like a glass-fronted cabinet). Storage – also relative to clutter. Factor in as much as you can, and then some more. Make use of clever ideas like carousel cupboards, which double or even triple your space, without taking up more area. Keep it simple. Plain fronts to the cabinets, or simple Shakerstyle will provide clean, clear lines. Try and streamline the kitchen’s design. Mirrors. What better way to create light than to reflect it- a clever use of mirrors can extend the feel of a room twice over. They are great for features too. Glass doors. If it’s in your budget, and you’re considering a bigger change, then why not add glass, or even bi-fold doors to the back of the kitchen. That way you can bring the outside in, and create a whole new feel to the heart of the home.

Keep it simple. Plain fronts to the cabinets, or simple Shaker-style will provide clean, clear lines. Try and streamline the kitchen’s design
