From the Executive Director Not Your Dad’s Shop Class Setting your child on the right path is not easy. College has been the preferred path to employment and opportunity for the last century, but it doesn’t work out for everyone, nor does it always score in a cost/benefit analysis Meanwhile, the rapid growth of AI will mean that many students who spend years at college studying for a career may find themselves poorly positioned for the new job market.

Although I have had a wide range of experiences, I was often guided - directly or indirectly - to believe that attending a BOCES vocational program or pursuing a trades-based education was less comprehensive or meaningful. There was a lingering stigma, and college was always emphasized. Going to BOCES would limit my opportunities, or so I was told.

Looking back, that was wrong, and I don’t know if that was ever the case. And I can assure you that right now, here in the Hudson Valley, making that sort of an assumption is a huge mistake. A recent tour of Ulster BOCES has flipped my view on all of this.

In this edition of On the Level we focus on the work being done around the Hudson Valley to support education in the trades.

We also focus on new investments in Ulster and Orange counties to create the training programs that AI can’t replicate.

Several things changed my mind on the topic of education. A few recommendations I give to parents who are struggling to make sure they give their children experience and opportunity to be productive and happy young adults.

Do The Math! The point of college is to help students become mature, thinking adults. But how often do students get out

a pad and pen and calculate the cost of college, how much they’ll earn after graduation, and if those jobs will actually be available. Instead, we make emotional decisions, even if the math doesn’t support the decision. We should be asking the total cost of going to that school; the salaries of the people who graduate from it and how long will it take to pay off your student loans?

Check the Options: Visit a technical/vocational school and bring your children. Test their interest the same as you would

with sports, do it when they are in eighth, ninth, or tenth grade. Bring them to a Union Hall and look at the apprentice programs. Ask about the opportunities if a student takes that pathway.

Think Differently: Don’t let your preconceived beliefs limit your kid’s future, and remember that many high school students

who attended trades and vocational programs often also go on to college. The two paths can meet up very well.

Feed the Mind and Body: Sitting behind a desk and staring at a computer is not my favorite thing. Neither are meetings

or being indoors all day. I love hands-on work and seeing the efforts of my labor blossom into accomplishment or visual improvements. Even if college is the right path, there are things in life you will need to know. Too many people can't change a tire, wire an outlet, fix a faucet, or repair something on their own. Let’s give our young people the opportunity to pick up these skills and send them into the world a little more well rounded.

In a world that’s changing fast, the smartest path might not be the traditional one; it’s the one that equips our kids with real skills and the flexibility to build the future.

2026 Safety Awards Nominations Now Being Accepted

Safety Deserves Recognition

The inaugural Safety Awards of CCA, SMACNA, and FERCA will recognize the contractors, unions, educators, and industry professionals helping to build a stronger culture of safety across the Hudson Valley construction industry. From life-saving leadership on the job site to long-term commitments to education and prevention, these awards will honor the people and organizations raising the standard for everyone in the field. Nominations are open for the following awards. Winners will be honored at our annual Holiday Dinner in December. Scan the QR code to submit your nomination.

Golden Hard Hat Award: Dedicated to an individual who has worked with a focus within their company to promote safety in the workplace, establish a culture of safety amongst workers, and whose actions may have saved a life, prevented loss of property or found an innovative way to advance safety on the job site.

This can go to a member of a Union or a Project Manager, or Safety Personnel.

Hudson Valley Safe Contractor Award: This award is given to the contractor of the Hudson Valley who has the lowest EMR, ties will be broken by the Contractor with the highest volume of work performed in the same year.

Education in Safety Award: This shall be given to a Union, Contractor, or organization who has played a major role in advancing the mission of construction site safety in the Hudson Valley.

Award: $1500 grant towards their mission to support safety.

I had a sense of what to expect, having attended a Chamber of Commerce mixer there a few weeks earlier.

It was there that I met several individuals, including Peter Harris, who encouraged me to arrange a visit.

Harris is Assistant Superintendent for the Learning & Design Career Pathways program. He has an uncanny passion for creating environments where students can learn, and he is not afraid to challenge the paradigms of traditional high school education. Growing up on his grandfather’s farm, he was expected to pick up different tools, learn how things function, and figure out how to improve or repair almost anything. “Kids today are no different than when we were growing up,” said Harris. “The difference is the environment and the things they’re exposed to. We have to create a safe place for young people to touch, feel and work with both traditional tools and the newest tools available.”

Here in the Hudson Valley, growth is accelerating.

Orange and Sullivan counties rank among the fastest-growing in the state, and tourism is booming, with some 6 million visitors annually to Orange County and more than 4 million to the Sullivan Catskills.

A recent analysis by Hudson Valley-based Colliers Engineering & Design makes clear that the corridor can no longer keep pace with current demand, let alone future growth. The study projects substantial increases in traffic over the next three decades, driven by both regional development and population growth.

Weekday congestion is dominated by commuter traffic, while weekend gridlock is fueled by travelers heading to the Catskills and other destinations, often backing onto surrounding roads. The takeaway is clear: A third lane in each direction would meaningfully improve traffic and reduce congestion.

While investing in public transportation is key for long-term sustainability, cars and trucks – whether electric or fuel-powered – will remain part of daily life. Without enhanced capacity, gridlock will worsen, stifling economic opportunities and our quality of life.

Standing still is not a solution. The planning is nearly done. Our region is united. Now we must build.

We commend Gov. Hochul, her team, and local elected leaders for their efforts. With the environmental review process nearing completion, it’s time to move forward and deliver the long-awaited three-lane enhancement between Orange and Sullivan counties. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve safety, enhance mobility, strengthen our region’s economy and better position the Hudson Valley for the future.
