MEET THE TEENS OF PROJECT: IDENTITY’S BETHEL WOODS ON MAIN, A PILOT PROGRAM IN LIBERTY’S DOWNTOWN BARN.

Dear Friends, Last year we proudly celebrated our 10th anniversary as a non-profit cultural center. A highlight of the year was our mid-summer festival, A GATHERING AT Bethel WOODS: A CELEBRATION OF PEACE, LOVE & MUSIC. Thousands of people joined us for a day of family-friendly activities that included music, collaborative art projects, guided tours of The Museum, games, and other activities—followed at dusk by a spectacular display of fireworks. It was just one in a year-long calendar of events focused on delivering our mission to inspire, educate, and empower people through the arts and humanities.

Whether through music, cultural and artistic learning programs, or historic preservation, we took several steps in 2016 to reach deeper into our communities to make more lives better. We piloted our Bethel Woods on Main project (featured on the cover and on page 16 of this magazine), which brought our PROJECT: IDENTITY program to teens where they live. We drew new, diverse, and younger audiences to our Pavilion Stage and Event Gallery, bringing in global Latin superstar Pitbull, and partnering with Shandelee Music Festival to present world-renowned young artists in the PLAY: The Classics, a concert series designed to make classical music more approachable across all age groups.

A major highlight of our 10th anniversary year came in December when, following submission of a complex application, the Woodstock festival site was added to the New York State Register of Historic Places. Then, this past February, the site was added to the National Register. We’re extremely proud and will publicly celebrate the designation later this year.

Anniversaries are important. They give us reason to gather and be joyous. As a society, we use the marking of an anniversary to reflect on how events have shaped us and to remind us of the things that matter most.

At Bethel Woods, what matters most to us is people. Through the lens of the ’60s, every aspect of what we do—concerts, museum exhibits, cultural enrichment programs, and festivals—reflects our belief in putting people first. We embrace our role in developing their creative capacity and improving their quality of life. Our work with children and families sparks intellectual curiosity and focuses on how they can use the shared experiences of peace, love, creativity, and self-expression to make their own mark in the world and make a difference in their communities. You’ll learn more about the impact our programs are having on people throughout the pages of this publication.

As we move ahead, we are filled with an optimistic spirit and a positive outlook. None of what we do to inspire people’s lives would be possible without the continued financial support of our Members, generous donors, corporate partners, employees, or volunteers. s we continue to expand our non-profit cultural center and grow in service to the region, our funding needs to grow with it. Gen Xers and Millennials will soon be the driving forces behind charitable giving.

In 2016, we took a step toward cultivating a stronger relationship with these all-important audiences. Over time, our goal is to inspire and encourage them to contribute in more meaningful ways to our programming, community, and preservation and interpretation efforts. Dubbed Night in the Woods, this “party for a cause� raised $27,000.

ight in the Woods was a perfect time to showcase the power of the arts. During the four days prior, area teaching artists worked on-site

alongside local installation artist Dennis McNett to construct a colossal tree. McNett also engaged children and their families from our SATURDAYS AT THE WOODS series to create screen printing and collage tiles for the event.

Posters on the lobby walls highlighted the impact we are having, including the budding young photographer from our PROJECT: IDENTITY program who is now a proud teaching assistant; the young family who received weekly transportation to attend the SATURDAYS AT THE WOODS; and a teen who found friendship and a creative outlet through EXPLORE THE SIXTIES. It is people like you, who support events like Night in the Woods, that help transform lives through the arts and humanities, sometimes just one person at a time.

ichael Appley knows that the arts are fundamental to our humanity and that they help us express our values, build bridges between cultures, and bring people together. Having been born and raised in Delaware County, NY, he also

understands the challenges rural communities like ours face in exposing people—especially young people—to the arts.

Today, Michael lives and works in the state of Delaware, where he is a Director of the American Gift Fund and the Managing Director of RBC Trust Company (Delaware) Limited. Since 2015 he has directed funds from his organization to Bethel Woods in support of our Bethel Woods on Main and other educational programs. Michael is interested in helping local children and future generations develop skills and inspire them to go on to successful and productive lives.

As he explains, “Many families leave money to our Fund and the board has the authority to make meaningful donations on their behalf. We look at the causes these families supported during their lifetime.” Michael’s endorsement and the generosity of The American Gift Fund’s Board of Directors is truly helping shape lives and inspire greatness.

Delani Ennis is a homeschooled student. From a very young age she was attracted to visual art. She joined PROJECT: IDENTITY so she could use photography as a way to express her feelings, individuality, and her inner voice.

PI: Photography helped her gain skills for college, and make time in her life to participate socially and creatively in her community. Since then, Delani has taken a leadership role during our SATURDAYS AT THE WOODS family program.

She says, “In PI we collaborated, listening to each other and our mentors. I learned to think more critically and ask questions about topics that really matter to me. I feel more professional and connected to my community. I feel encouraged to participate—creatively.”

How photography workshops build talent, confidence, and wellbeing in teens.

T

aking part in arts and humanities programs outside the classroom can be out of reach for teens across our region. Barriers include costs, transportation, and

time. Yet, we know that when people—particularly students— participate in the arts, it leads to improved wellbeing and academic performance.

Thanks to educational and enrichment programs at Bethel Woods, area teens are discovering their potential, gaining problem-solving skills, and seeing new possibilities for their lives.

Annually we welcome a dynamic group of teens to our PROJECT: IDENTITY PHOTOGRAPHY (PI) program. Last spring, they came from as far as Brooklyn and as nearby as Monticello. Over 10 weeks this group of 20 high-schoolers with a passion for visual storytelling gathered at The Conservatory at Bethel Woods.

Each week they learned the basics of digital photography, image manipulation, and the history of different photography styles. Then they applied their new skills to their own artistic vision, ultimately curating selected images for a photo book and final exhibition late in May. During the finale, each student also made a personal artistic statement while presenting their photographs for family, friends, and supporters.

PI focuses on creativity and collaboration. It also contributes

to a well-rounded education by cultivating life-long lessons and technical knowledge for college, career, and an empowered civic life.

With him came a pulsating blend of music, light, a dance extravaganza—and a whole new Bethel Woods audience.

I

n our first ten years, we grew into a highly regarded education and entertainment center

with a reputation for excellence. Going forward, plans at Bethel Woods call for expanding our work by serving a larger, more diverse audience to help ensure our long-term sustain-

ability. And, our 2016 audience development survey revealed an opportunity to engage with younger and more diverse demographic groups. Fully half of Pitbull’s audience were first-time

attendees at Bethel Woods.

Continuing the effort, we brought in a youthful generation of homegrown talent to target younger audiences as well. Sullivan and Orange County, NY natives, Gavin DeGraw, Andy Grammer, and special guest Aaron Tveit made their debut performance at Bethel Woods.

The “Home at Last” concert kicked-off a national tour for DeGraw and Grammer, with Tveit joining for this one night only.

o reach more teens and young adults, Project: Identity piloted Bethel Woods on

Main at Liberty’s Downtown Barn, located within walking distance for many of them.

The pilot program, an extension of the PI: Sessions program, focused on developing

a mural for the Village of Liberty. Participants did extensive research, made presentations to the Village Board, worked with property owners, and had to do a surprising amount of math in designing the mural, which was officially unveiled in April 2017.

Bethel Woods on Main gives teens the chance to engage in their community through arts, civic action, and conversation. With your support, we hope to expand the program in the coming year.

Someday, 17-year-old Asia Calabrese-Lewis hopes to play on The Pavilion stage.

For now, she plays her acoustic guitar and sings among her peers and occasionally in front of community audiences at Bethel Woods. Asia participates in several life-changing programs at Bethel Woods including Project: Identity where she works her craft and learns skills for college, career, and civic life. She is also one of the first teen interns now working at the Saturdays at the Woods family program. Asia, who last fall performed before an audience of over 200 guests at our Wine Pairing and Fundraising Dinner, stands as a fine example of how exposure to the arts is instrumental to personal growth and the health and wellbeing of our communities.

Over three weeks, with the help of teaching artists from THE SCHOOL OF DRAMA AT THE NEW SCHOOL, they wrote, staged, made props, sets, and costumes for a show they called Kaleidoscope. The entire performance “was a product of their collective thoughts, emotions, tastes, and effort—not as friends or as a team, but as a family.”

ichael Schleifer has been a long-time visitor to Sullivan County. Since 1968 he has been spending time here with his family. “I was coming of age

at the time of the festival.” In a wonderful twist of fate, this educator and his wife, Jamee—also an educator—now live just two miles from the historic site. They enjoy special exhibits at The Museum and never tire of the opportunity to share the sights, sounds, and natural beauty of the historic site and special gathering place with friends.

The Schleifers have been Bethel Woods members since 2006. At his core, Michael is a product of the Woodstock generation. And while he “feels connected to the land, the site, and the music,” his connection goes much deeper.

Michael and Jamee, like many who grew up in the Sixties, believe that we each have the power to make a difference and that together we can change the world. In addition to their annual membership, the Schleifers also contribute unrestricted funds to Bethel Woods.

Volunteers give back and put people first.

O

ur non-profit organization depends on the kindness of volunteers to help serve our guests at Pavilion shows and The Museum. Volunteers also help run some of our arts and humanities programs serving youth and adults. In 2016, our team

of 181 volunteers DONATED OVER 13,000 HOURS to Bethel Woods. From docents in The Museum to greeters at the front gate, ushers, and parking lot crew, we rely on them to make our visitors feel welcome, well-informed, and comfortable.

The Independent Sector—a national membership organization that brings together nonprofits, foundations, and corporations to advance the common good—estimates the average dollar value of a volunteer hour at $23.56 nationwide. In New York state, that

value is $27.59 per hour. Through September 30, 2016 our devoted volunteers gave an average of nearly 72 hours each, worth a total of $322,000 of service to Bethel Woods.

We’re grateful for these dedicated people and hope the next time you meet one of them, you’ll say thank you, too.

The “Message Tree” watches over our activities all year long. Its age, however, is a growing concern. Under the guidance of Bethel Woods’ staff and with the assistance of Summer Hill Nursery, grafted cuttings have successfully taken root and appear viable. With the help of Mother Nature, the strongest sapling will someday be planted near its parent.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of the Interior in early 2017 gave approval to add the Woodstock festival site to the National Register of Historic Places.

C

elebrated and legendary places serve an important function in our society by bringing people together to give meaning to our shared experiences. In our Cultural Landscape Report, we detailed plans to obtain official recognition for the Woodstock site on

the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Governor Cuomo helped accelerate the process at a June 30, 2016 press conference, as part of his initiative to balance tourism and economic activity.

The Museum staff and the State Historic Preservation Office drafted the complex set of materials required and on December 9, 2016, the nomination was unanimously approved by the State Review Board and forwarded to the Keeper of the National Historic Register. Federal approval came through on February 28, 2017. We plan to celebrate the marking of the site with a plaque like the one shown here.

Attracting grant funding We are fortunate that a growing number of funders recognize our track record and are making our success possible. Plans to preserve the site and enhance the visitor experience have earned the support of agencies and foundations. These projects include creating a self-guided mobile app tour of the historic site, restoring the woodland trails where vendors sold their “Bindy Bazaar” goods in 1969, making improvements around the Woodstock Monument, Woodstock festival artist memorial garden protecting the Witness Trees that were there to see it all, and locating and marking the exact location of the stage, the sound towers, and other elements of the festival.

In the elegant Event Gallery, 200 of our most generous donors demonstrated their commitment to our educational, enrichment, and community programs when they raised over $165,000 at our signature annual Wine Pairing and Fundraising Dinner.

The event was underwritten by Empire Resorts with additional support from Moore Insurance, Advance Testing, Grimm Construction, the Frommer and Rowley Families, Orange Bank & Trust, Mediacom, and further donations from Spectra, Vining Sparks and Spencer Printing. ur 18th annual Harvest Festivals along with our 5th annual Wine and 4th annual Craft Beer Festivals on the picturesque grounds bring a growing number of

visitors to our historic site to enjoy the fall reverie. Just as important to bringing people together, is their effect on both the economic stimulation and creative capital in our region.

This year’s Wine Festival featured an exclusive “Taste and Sip” session by Heron Hill Winery, and more than 25 wineries. Over 20 regional breweries took part in The Craft

Beer Festival which featured a VIP lounge sponsored by Brewery Ommegang.

More than 100 local and regional vendors participated in the five Harvest Festivals that have become a highly anticipated gathering for families and friends to celebrate nature’s bounty.

Guests enjoyed the unique blend of farmers’ market, artisans and crafters, fresh food, special events, family activities, education programming and performances by local musicians and folk troupes.

oul Inscribed, a project of five arts educators that uses poetic hip-hop lyrics, break dancing, DJing, and lyric writing reached 642 students, teachers,

and guests, culminating in both a school day and a community performance.

Teachers in the alternative education classroom marveled.

A typically disengaged student suddenly started to write, and an incredibly shy student came to life behind the microphone. As one student put it, “When you came into my classroom it was like a burst of color went all over our school. I was happy, my friends were happy, my teacher was happy, and I bet you were, too.”

Even the Soul Inscribed leader was moved. Baba Israel reflected on the time he spent in The Museum, in the community and with students:

“I started to feel something awaken, to know that in these times is when we can step up. So, let’s honor the spirit of gathering… of community… of generosity… of possibility. Thank you for reminding us of what bonds us… what transforms me… ‘cause we are going to need to raise our voices, our songs, and stand strong.

The Holiday Market nurtures our community’s creativity and supports our local merchants.

In the Market Sheds a warm and festive atmosphere and a chance to “shop local� welcomed hundreds anticipating the coming celebrations. Over 70 regional artists, crafters, and specialty food vendors provided a wide variety of holiday delights at the two-day event which featured the Flicks film series screening of Miracle on 34th Street.

Holiday Market is just one example of how Bethel Woods helps grow the regional economy. Events like this one are also good for local merchants as they fuel spending on food, lodging, and other regional attractions.

Including the indirect impact of Bethel Woods, an estimated 175 full-time equivalent jobs were created in New York State, of which 122 were based in Sullivan County.
