Throughout history we have gathered in places where artistic, social, and civic activities come to life. In these often expansive, open places, we exchange ideas, experience cultural diversity, and share the human bonds that connect us all.

Unique among the world’s gathering places was Max Yasgur’s pastoral dairy farm in Bethel, New York. During the summer of 1969, at a formative time in American history, a sea of humanity, half a million strong, gathered for three days at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair.

A legendary gathering, it was renowned as much for the spirited belief that everyone has the power to affect positive change, as it was for the music.

Yasgur’s farm remains a gathering place forty-five years later as Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Motivated by the ideals of altruism, cooperation, and respect, we are now in our ninth year as a growing, world-class, not-for-profit cultural center using the arts and humanities to inspire, educate, and empower individuals.

The original festival field remains untouched, preserved for generations of worldwide visitors. The surrounding lush land houses one of the world’s top outdoor amphitheaters and an intimate nine-sided indoor Event Gallery, each of which continues the legendary site’s storied musical tradition. The award-winning Museum at Bethel Woods, intellectually and emotionally immerses visitors in the history of the Sixties and Woodstock.

At the Conservatory, arts education and hands-on skills in the performing arts are already having a positive effect on children’s lives and in school.

With this focus on the arts and humanities, Bethel Woods is engaging our community, while encouraging and contributing to the region’s economic vitality.

When you visit Bethel Woods what do you see?

Some see rolling hills and sweeping vistas with a pristine park-like environment. A place where people gather on warm summer evenings, singing along with their favorite performers. Others, a glimpse into long-lost moments of the 1960s, on display in the Special Exhibit Gallery at The Museum. You might see people snapping smart phone photos at the historic Woodstock monument to post on Facebook™ and Instagram™. Or, friends enjoying each other’s company on a spectacular fall afternoon at one of many festivals.

People of all ages are learning about a transformative period in our country’s history and applying that knowledge to their own lives.

Students are studying creative writing, music, and acting, while learning valuable life skills that contribute to their long-term success. Volunteers from all walks of life are sharing their wisdom and knowledge of this special place with visitors from all over the world.

When a young child gleefully arrives at our door, eager to join classmates at nine o’clock on a Saturday morning, it must be for something that stirs a passion within.

In 2013, 28,000 children and families from across our region gathered at Bethel Woods to take part in a wide variety of arts and education programs.

We know that early and sustained exploration and participation in the arts and humanities is important in a young life. In fact, according to the organization, Americans for the Arts, students involved in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement.

MANHATTAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC, MAGIC FLUTE

Today, kids ranging from kindergarten to college join in immersive programs, free World Stage Series performances, and other humanities and arts-based programming.

They benefit from educational topics, ranging from freedom of expression to civil rights, from music to pop culture.

Collaborations with our creative partners such as Delaware Valley Opera and Manhattan School of Music provide performing arts workshops for youth.

Children from organizations like the Boys & Girls Club and Newburgh’s Nora Cronin Presentation Academy participate in programs such as Saturdays at the Woods, Broadway in Bethel, and Youth Opera Experience.

Field trips to The Museum at Bethel Woods complement classroom learning. Programs are designed to support the new Common Core State Standards. When children and teachers can’t come to us, the Bethel Woods Traveling Trunks go to them. Each suitcase

is filled with touchable objects and lesson plans focused on music and the social, political, scientific, and cultural shifts of the Sixties.

These programs, along with Bethel Woods in the Classroom—funded by TD Charitable Foundation—encourage creativity, confidence, and problemsolving skills. Each is instrumental in instilling perseverance, focus, and determination while giving meaning and connecting us to cultures around the world.

ONE BOY’S VICTORY:

“I made the honor roll!”

Tonja is a single mom. Her son Jaden, an active 12 year-old, needed an outlet for his abundant energy and creative imagination.

Jaden attends Monticello Middle School and is also a “Club Kid” at the Boys and Girls Club. He was awarded a scholarship to a Summer Stages workshop at Bethel Woods. During the two-week program, he auditioned, rehearsed, and then performed in several roles during a live performance of The Wiz. “The experience at Bethel Woods gave Jaden the confidence to perform in other plays and musicals,” explained his mom. “He also made a few new friends along the way. But by far the most important outcome was that Jaden made the honor roll at school for the first time ever.”

Building Life Skills through Arts and

The Conservatory at Bethel Woods has lofty ceilings and a big open floor plan. A baby grand piano, donated by Sullivan County native and recording star Gavin DeGraw, provides the accompaniment for theatrical rehearsals.

This is a peaceful, supportive enclave where students in grades K-12 study performing arts, creative writing, and self expression.

While kids do learn acting, creative writing, and set and costume design, more importantly, access to these arts programs teach them to hone their skills through constant and consistent practice. They learn that there is more than one path to solve a problem, and always more than one answer to a question. The arts also help kids learn how to handle critique and cope with stressful situations.

In 2013, charitable contributions enabled Bethel Woods to award 42 scholarships.

Empowering Young Girls and Raising Their Expectations In urban environments overshadowed with crime and drugs, expectations and dreams for a better life can all too often be low, especially for young girls.

Nora Cronin Presentation Academy, a private middle school for girls in Newburgh, New York aims to change that mindset.

The girls at Nora Cronin Presentation Academy first visited Bethel Woods in the spring of 2012, for a behind-the-scenes facilities tour. Arts Education Manager, Mark Robinson led the tour and later performed a Shakespeare monologue for the girls. They were immediately hooked, and it marked the beginning of a journey filled with self-discovery and new expectations.

Students have attended a number of World Stage and Youth Opera Experience performances at Bethel Woods, including Amahl and the Night Visitors and Hansel and Gretel. One student received a scholarship and transportation to the Broadway in Bethel, Summer Stages workshop.

Two years later, Robinson now leads an after-school improv workshop at Nora Cronin. The class is designed to build self confidence and teach the girls how to apply theatrical and improvisation skills in real-life situations, such as bullying, becoming more confident making eye contact, and speaking up.

“We are very thankful and blessed to experience this.” said Kuyler, an eigth-grader. “I am learning that I can be anything I want to be.”

Chartered by the State of New York, The Museum at Bethel Woods explores the unique experience of the Woodstock festival and its significance as the culminating event of the 1960s — a decade of radical cultural transformation.

THE STORY IS THE IMPORTANT PART OF HISTORY

In 2013, two Museum events told the story of Woodstock and the ‘60s through pictures.

On Assignment: Woodstock, presented the candid images of festival attendees and behind the scenes action recorded by Rolling Stone photographer Baron Wolman. Thanks to 100 generous donors, 100 of Wolman’s iconic photographs became part of our permanent collection.

Keeping Time: The Photography of Don Hunstein highlighted the 30-year career of the Columbia Records house photographer. The collection featured some of the greatest performers of the era including Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, and countless others, who appear on hundreds of album covers.

Since 2006, nearly 160 donors have contributed items to The Museum’s permanent collection.

Exploring Fan Devotion and Beatlemania One of our goals is to reach a younger audience, so we built in social media components.

Jeffersonville resident Rod Mandeville’s collection of Beatles memorabilia is featured in “America Meets the Beatles!” at The Museum at Bethel Woods.

Mandeville donated his amazing personal collection of original Beatles bobbleheads, a Beatles jigsaw puzzle, fan club ephemera, rare Beatles albums, and original Beatles movie posters to compliment photos of the Beatles’ first visit to America by LIFE magazine photographer Bill Eppridge.

Other Beatles mementos including Paul McCartney’s collarless, mohair suit that he wore on the back cover of Meet The Beatles round out the special exhibit, marking the 50th anniversary of their arrival in America. This special exhibit is on view at The Museum through August 17, 2014.

Samantha Clink wasn’t even a twinkle in her parents’ eyes when John, Paul, George, and Ringo first stepped on American soil in 1964. Today, you could call this 24-year old Masters in History Museum Studies Graduate at Cooperstown Graduate Program a bit of a Beatles know-it-all. Clink was the Museum’s curatorial intern last summer, and for her thesis, she curated The Rod Mandeville Memorabilia Collection.

It may be the soft, sweet bowing of a violin that moves you to tears, the captivating stage presence of a world music performance that invites you to clap along, or an engaging speaker that challenges your beliefs.

Each year Bethel Woods hosts a growing number of culturally-diverse presentations.

During the 2013 season, Event Gallery was the setting for three artistic partnerships.

The Bradstan Cabaret Series, featured three performances curated by Scott Samuelson, Bradstan Country Hotel co-owner and founder of “Inn Cabaret.”

In a joint venture with Shandelee Music Festival, which celebrated 20 years in 2013, we presented the American Boychoir, pianist Allan Yueh, and an “Afternoon of Chamber Music” featuring pianists Claudia Hu, Helen Shen, and Doris Lee.

The Sundays with Friends Chamber Music Series, presented by curator Eileen Moon, associate principal Cello of the New York Philharmonic, featured five eclectic recital and small ensemble performances.

artful diversions and Celebrations of Life

We come together as a community through festivals to celebrate what makes us unique.

We celebrate expression, creativity, and the goodness of life.

The Harvest Festival at Bethel Woods marked 15 years last fall, as people from all over the region came to rejoice in the fruits of the growing season, the fine work of local artisans and crafts-people, and the glories of music.

CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL

New in 2013 was the Craft Beer Festival with over 25 regional breweries, food vendors, and live music. The Annual Wine Festival at Bethel Woods featured tastings from more than 20 regional vineyards, paired with specialty foods, cheese, a craft show, and entertainment.

In August, the Event Gallery was the site of Current Hues on the Hudson, featuring contemporary paintings, sculptures, photography, video, and other mediums. Lindsey Jardine, a recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts, curated this first-ever fine art exhibit.

Richie Havens was the first act to take the stage at the Woodstock festival in 1969. It was his wish that his final resting place would be here, on that very same field. On Sunday, August 18, 2013, several thousand people attended a celebration of his life and music in A Day of Song and Remembrance. Havens’ friends and band-mates recalled his legacy through performances and storytelling, while his ashes mixed with flower petals, were spread over the festival site, further consecrating that hallowed ground.

Volunteers at Bethel Woods come from all walks of life. They serve as greeters and ushers, Event Gallery assistants, Museum docents, and Harvest Festival volunteers. Each give generously of their time and talent for many different reasons: to give back; make new friends; learn new skills; gain career experience; and build confidence.
