From Our CEO/Executive Director I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays. This was a fantastic year with excellent work at the Fisher Houses. The entire staff at Fisher House, Inc. remains focused on helping military families with their stay at the Fisher Houses in San Antonio. The second South Texas VA Fisher House on Wurzbach Road in San Antonio is well on its way to open around March 2024. Fisher House, Inc. committed 1.3 million dollars towards the new VA House. This new house can accommodate 16 families at once with modern technology. Once complete, this new house will allow up to 100 military families to be housed within the three San Antonio Fisher House Locations.

The fun-filled Fisher House, Inc. 17th Annual Golf Tournament on 6 November was a great success this year. A special thank you goes out to all who sponsored this year’s event. This year’s top sponsors include J&J Worldwide Services, Fisher House Foundation, Security Service Federal Credit Union, USAMM, Circle K, NIKA, and Blues Skies of Texas. We maxed out the tournament with 180 golf players this year using both golf courses at the Fair Oaks Golf Course. You can read more about our Golf Tournament and see photos on pages 6 and 7 of this newsletter. A big thank you to all our 2023 donors and volunteers. MEET OUR FISHER HOUSE INC PRESIDENT: Maj Gen Roger W. Burg, USAF (Ret.) Roger Burg is the President of the Board of Directors of Fisher House Incorporated, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Fisher Houses at JBSA Lackland, JBSA Ft. Sam Houston, and the Audie Murphy VA Medical Center. General Burg is also President of O’Malley Burg Consulting, LLC, a San Antonio based company that specializes in connecting industry with opportunity in the defense and government sectors in San Antonio, Texas. General Burg retired from active duty in September 2010 after 32 years of service in the Air Force. General Burg commanded ICBM and space units for 10 years, including squadron, group, vice wing, wing and Numbered Air Force. He also served in significant national security and international affairs positions at the White House, the Joint Staff, the Air Staff, US Strategic Command, US Space Command, and Strategic Air Command. His final active duty position was commanding 20th Air Force, responsible for 10,000 airmen, three operational bases, and 500 deployed ICBMs. Since retirement from active duty, General Burg has been active in the San Antonio community, serving on the Board of Directors of Fisher House Incorporated since 2011, serving on the Board and then as Chairman of the Board of the First Tee of Greater San Antonio, on the Board of Directors of Alamo FIRST, and is a graduate of the Masters Leadership Program of San Antonio, and a member of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association.

years. This year, we received a donation of $46,324.92 following their annual Cigar bash event, bringing their lifetime donation to $386,975. Finck Cigar has been San Antonio’s #1 cigar source since 1893. For over 120 years the Finck family has been the largest supplier of fine cigars in Texas. Relationships like this are what allow Fisher House, Inc. to continue supporting the nine San Antonio area Fisher Houses. GUESTS AT THE FISHER HOUSE... The Ditlevson family

Fifteen years ago, when I left my assignment as a liaison for 1st Cav during their 20062008 deployment to Iraq, I never thought I would ever need to utilize the services of the Fisher House. I helped so many family members settle into the Fisher House to be beside their wounded warriors; I thought what an amazing thing that was offered to these family members. Fast forward to January 17, 2023, I never would have thought that my husband, MAJ Jeremy Ditlevson, would suffer a catastrophic injury that would leave me ending up in two Fisher Houses for a total of 8 months. We had friends visiting, and we ordered tacos for Taco Tuesday. After dinner with our friends, Jeremy and I cleaned up dinner and put the leftovers away. As he was getting ready to wipe the table down, he sneezed 15 times in rapid succession; walked backward about 5 feet and sat down. I looked over at him and asked him if he was okay. When he didn’t answer me, I asked again. At that point, I realized that something was wrong. As he leaned forward but wouldn’t look at me, I gently pushed him back to look at his face and realized quickly that he was having a stroke. His face had all the signs so I immediately called 9-1-1. Because we live in the middle of nowhere on our 80-acre farm, it took 9 minutes for the volunteer paramedics to come from the next town over with the sheriff and 6 minutes for the paramedics to come from our town. While waiting for the town paramedics, the volunteers and the sheriff recognized that Jeremy was not in a good place. He needed to be med-evaced to the trauma center in Oklahoma City, 99 miles north of us. With information on drive times to the hospital, we decided that Jeramy would be med-evaced from our property directly to the trauma center. Our friends that were there visiting helped me get things together for Jeremy and take care of our pets so I could locate our daughter to inform her of the seriousness of her dad (stepdad, but dad to her). One of Jeremy’s previous soldiers (he’s retired now) asked me to stop by his house since it was on the way out of town. Once I got there, he told me to get in the passenger seat. He was driving me to the hospital, and off we went. Once we arrived at the E.R., I was directed to the back, where I was told they were unsure if he would make it through the night. His two former soldiers rotated with me through the night to sit at his bedside. I immediately knew this wasn’t good when I walked into Jeremy’s room. Having previous medical experience as a medic and flight medic in the Army, I knew I was in for a long night if he would even survive. Jeremy was finally moved to the ICU, where he spent the next 17 days. During these 17 days, Jeramy encountered multiple complications, including needing brain surgery to remove part of his skull and relieve pressure on his brain and a saddle pulmonary embolism. Doctors found several existing conditions that were all fighting against him. After 17 days in the ICU, Jeremy was moved to a step-down unit while we await his transportation to the Audie L. Murphy Poly-Trauma Center in San Antonio. February 9, 2023, he was flown to the poly-trauma unit, and I arrived later that night. The case manager arranged for me to stay at the VA Fisher House across the street from the poly-trauma unit. When I arrived at the VA Fisher House, the staff immediately welcomed me. I stayed in that particular Fisher House for nine weeks. On April 11, 2023, Jeremy was transferred to another local rehabilitation center. I moved to the Fisher House on the BAMC campus, where I stayed for six months. On May 11, 2023, Jeremy was discharged and moved into the Fisher House with me. He began extensive treatment through the Brain Injury Clinic in BAMC, where he was being seen 4-5 days a week for multiple hours a day. We stayed in the BAMC Fisher House until Oct 2023, when we were moved into a long-term housing situation. Jeremy continues outpatient treatment with the Brain Injury Clinic at BAMC and Adaptive Recreation Therapy through the Soldier Recovery Unit. He continues to improve every day. His therapies have given him the ability to see and know that even though he has had a stroke, he can still do things that he enjoys. He is currently training in swimming, indoor rowing, air rifle, and shot-put to try and make the U.S. Army team and attend the DOD Warrior Games in 2024.

I never imagined I would ever have to utilize a Fisher House until tragedy struck our family. The ability to stay at a Fisher House alleviated the stress of knowing where we would stay during this tragic time and helped suppress the financial burden that this could put us. Capital Campaign The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) is one of the leading healthcare systems for veterans in the VA Heart of Texas Health Care Network. Serving over 100,000 veterans each year, the Audi L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital at STVHCS provides an array of healthcare services, including acute medical, surgical, mental health, and primary care. Due to recognized need, a second 16-suite Fisher House is being constructed at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital at STVHCS. FISHER HOUSE LOCATIONS SAN ANTONIO
The Fisher Houses in San Antonio provide service members, veterans and their families with comfortable lodging, food, and other services in their time of need….at no cost! These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times – during hospitalization or healthcare for illness, disease, or injury. Believing that “a family’s love is the best medicine,” we want the patients and their families to focus on what’s most important: the healing process.
