GUESTS AT THE FISHER HOUSE...

The Watts family

My husband, Command Sergeant Major (retired) Stanley Watts, spent 32 years of his life in service as a US Army soldier, 5 years as a JROTC Instructor in Dallas Independent School District during most of the COVID-19 lockdown, and that same amount of time away from our loved ones. In 2022, we decided it was time to get closer to home. We found land and a contractor to build the home we designed. We moved with our teen son and preteen daughter to Texarkana, in August 2023.

I continued to work remote from home and Stanley decided to go back into the family business with one of his older brothers. When they were little and through adulthood, their Dad was a professional tree logger in Arkansas until he passed away. That’s where they learned the business, how to operate equipment, and drive semi-trucks.

On January 8, 2024, it was a little over 40 degrees, foggy, with light and steady rain. It was too wet and muddy for forestry operations and would have been a great day to take the day off. As I think back, there were so many things that just didn’t feel right about that day. A loud explosion filled the air. It was an air pressure blast from a tire that blew Stanley off his feet and over 10 feet away from where he was. It took his brother over five minutes to find him. At the same time, the rain began to fall harder, and the temperature seemed to drop. Stanley was soaked and his brother could barely move him. His brother called 9-11 and then called me.

From a one-minute phone call, I went from completing work tasks, planning to pick up our children from school, to calling my sister because my husband was unconscious. When the ambulance arrived at the emergency entrance, I watched as my husband was rolled off the vehicle and in through the restricted emergency entrance. The doctors couldn’t understand why he was unconscious. They sedated him in an effort to protect his brain from further damage and provide pain relief until they could fully diagnose him. It turned out that my husband had one of the most severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI); he was diagnosed with a Grade 3 Diffuse Axonal Injury. Basically, Stanley’s brain shifted in his skull, resulting in shearing of axons or nerve fibers. The medical team essentially gave us two outcomes to consider. 1. We take him off the ventilator and Stanley passes away. 2. We take him off the ventilator and he may be in a vegetative state. However, I couldn’t accept their options. After it became clear about what I needed to do, I spoke to the attending doctor again. I recapped the options they gave us and added one more. 3. The miracle. Stanley was on a ventilator and an IV feeding him nutrients. Someone from our family was at the hospital with him in ICU, day and night. Eventually, I had to talk to our children and explain what was going on. We prayed together after I shared that their Dad was fighting for his life. I asked our daughter if she understood what was happening. She expressed that she wasn’t worried because her Dad was going to be okay!

One night, I asked my sister to stay with him. I called to ask her how he was doing. She told me he squeezed her hand. I asked her to record it the next time it happened and to show the nurses on duty. Eventually, his attending doctor video called me from my sister’s phone. He said, “You prayed for a miracle and spoke it into existence. So, here it is!”

After that the doctors began to show up again. Stanley made gains every day. By mid-January, he received a tracheotomy, and he finally received a feeding tube. But we couldn’t stop there. The hospital’s social worker was working hard to find a rehab facility. I educated her about the VA Polytrauma Centers, and she started the process to get us admitted to the VA Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center in San Antonio, Texas. Stanley moved from ICU on January 29 to the Respiratory Care Unit and was on his way to San Antonio on In no time at all, a VA Social Worker contacted us. He arranged for me to stay at the Fisher House. Sadly, I didn’t know much about the Fisher House. Perhaps, it’s because it wasn’t a place I thought I would find myself. I don’t know. What I do know is that I was overwhelmed, sort of emotionally stoic, and focused on advocating for my husband. I arrived at the Fisher House and re- ceived a warm welcome. I realized that I didn’t need half the things I packed. It was like staying at a nice bed and breakfast- a retreat for families of veterans who were receiving care at the VA hospital. There was food provided by the FisherHouse and a place to store my personal food items. There was also a dining area with multiple tables, a family room, and a laundry room with extra toiletries. I had my own room, the house was secure- including nightly rounds by the VA police, and the hospital was close enough to walk. The Fisher House became my refuge to get the rest I needed, a place where I could calm

down and center myself. It was also a place where I bonded with other family members who were there for their veteran. When I think about how much it would cost my family to pay for almost 60 nights at a hotel, I’m not sure I would have been able to be there for my husband as long as I was and be so engaged as a member of his rehabilitation team.

By February 7, 2024, Stanley was able to eat soft foods. On February 8, his trach was capped, and he spoke for the first time in a month. Yes, he said, “I love you too”! My husband was discharged from the hospital to home health, and I checked out of the Fisher House on March 28, 2024. Stanley con- tinues on his miraculous journey to a full recovery. As I write this, my husband is eating regular food, holding conversations, can stand and sit on his own, walks using a cane with minimal support, and is enjoying time with family. For us- God has already shown us what Stanley’s recovery will be and our job is to continue doing the work to get there.

My name is Dr. Rechell Watts, EdD. I am Stanley’s wife, mother to our two children, sister, a US Army Veteran, & Certified Educator. I also consider myself a Fisher House advocate. It’s through the ‘home away from home’ stability provided by this non-profit that I was able to assist in Stanley’s rehabilitation and discharge home for the next phase of his recovery.

WHATS HAPPENING AROUND THE FISHER HOUSES

JBSA- Lackland Fisher House

“We have been busy here at the JBSA-Lackland Fisher House. With the help of our amazing volunteers, for the last few weeks we have been able to take out all the old mulch and bushes that were no longer thriving and replace them all. This was quite a lengthy process, and it was completed in a timely manner with their help and dedication. Our next big project in the works will be a renovation of our Fisher House II. This project is estimated to take approximately 6 months and includes renovating guest rooms along with the kitchen, laundry, and dining area. Being able to provide this for our guests will make the rooms and house more inviting and a place where they will feel comfortable and welcomed. Finally, we held an Open House on 11 April to celebrate the 32 years of operation of the first DAF Fisher House that broke ground in April of 1991, opening in 1992 and starting over 30 years of service and support to Lackland Air Force Base and Wilford Hall guests.” - Mandy Gaitan- Operation Assistant

South Texas Veterans VA Fisher House II

On April 5, 2024, amidst a gathering of veterans, military personnel, and community members, the ribbon-cutting ceremony for South Texas VA Fisher House II commenced. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation and gratitude as attendees recognized the invaluable resource now available to military families facing medical crises. The new Fisher House boasts state-of-the-art amenities designed to enhance the well-being of its guests. Spacious guest suites, communal living areas, and serene outdoor spaces provide a tranquil environment where families can find solace and strength amidst their challenges.

For many military families, the Fisher House serves as a lifeline during times of crisis, alleviating the burden of travel and accommodation expenses while offering a supportive community of fellow families experiencing similar circumstances. The bonds forged within the walls of the Fisher House extend far beyond a temporary stay, fostering connections that endure long after families return home.

As the doors of the new Fisher House swing open, they offer not just physical shelter but also a beacon of hope and solidarity for military families across the nation. In the face of adversity, the Fisher House stands as a testament to the power of compassion and the resilience of the human spirit.

VolunteerSpotlight

“We are Sister Sandra Hess and Elder Scott Hess of the Texas San Antonio Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We have been privileged to serve almost every Friday at Lackland AFB’s Fisher House since March 2023. Most weeks six young missionaries accompany us. They perform the lion’s share of the work and are amazing young people. Our service is part of our stewardship to our Savior and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

We are a military family. Both of our fathers were career military and Elder Hess served in the United States Air Force for 22 years. We know all too well the struggles and challenges military life can bring to a family especially when away

from home and when facing medical issues. Fisher House meets those needs in a wonderful, sweet, and tender way. Our religious beliefs, love of family, and military service inspired us to cultivate a mentality and life of service. We strive to have our actions represent what our Savior would do if he were here. Caring for and showing love toward others is satisfying and fulfilling, even when through small and simple acts of service.”
