A big thank you to Avis Banks and Cheryl Payadue for volunteering once again at the registration table during this year’s golf tournament.

From Our CEO/Executive Director
I want to extend my warmest wishes for a happy holiday to everyone. This year has been truly remarkable with the opening of the new House II at the South Texas Veterans VA Fisher House. Thanks to our donors Fisher House, Inc., was able to contibute $1.3 Million to the the Fisher House Foundation toward the build of this new home. The new house allows us to provide support to 106 military families in San Antonio at any given time. A project of this scale wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support of our donors. A heartfelt thank you to all who made this achievement possible.
The staff and Board of Directors of Fisher House, Inc. had a fantastic time volunteering at the 2024 Finck Cigar Bash. The event was filled with great food, drinks, and lively company. Once again, it was a sold-out success, raising vital funds for Fisher House, Inc. A heartfelt thank you to the Finck family, vendors, sponsors, and everyone who attended. For more details, see the brief on page 5 of this newsletter.

DwayneF.Hopkins CEO/ExecutiveDirector
The Golf Tournament on November 4th was a fantastic day of competition and camaraderie. We had an incredible turnout with 168 players across multiple teams, filling both courses at Fair Oaks Golf Course. A huge thank you to our generous sponsors— Platinum sponsor J&J Worldwide Services, Gold sponsors Fisher House Foundation and Security Service Federal Credit Union, and Bronze sponsors Circle K, Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union, NIKA, Laurel Ridge, Frost, Blue Skies of Texas, and Paul Allen Homes—for making this event possible. Be sure to check out the highlights in the photos on pages 6 and 7. This year’s tournament featured awards for the top three teams, as well as special prizes for the Closest-to-the-Pin and Longest Drive competitions.
As 2024 comes to a close, I want to express my gratitude to all of our volunteers and sponsors. With a small staff of just three at Fisher House, Inc., we rely heavily on the dedication and support of each volunteer and sponsor to make everything possible. Your efforts are truly invaluable to the military families in San Antonio. Thank you for all you do!

GUESTS AT THE FISHER HOUSE
Scott Reed

ScottReedwithDonorAshleyBokop
I would venture to say, like many, my understanding of the Fisher House was a place our nation’s heroes and their family members stayed during the care of wounds sustained in combat. I was unaware of the support and programs available, free of charge, to active military, veterans, and their families.
In early 2020, I learned I was in end-stage kidney failure due to the genetic condition of polycystic kidney disease. In November, my kidney function had dropped to eight percent. My nephrologist explained I had approximately three months to decide if I would go on dialysis or be put on hospice care until my kidneys failed. The typical wait for a cadaver kidney match is between six to eight years; during which I would be on dialysis at least three times per week. I saw my father suffer through dialysis and knew it was not the lifestyle I wanted.
In December, my best friend, Jim Lotz passed away unexpectedly. Jim and his wife were to be my medical team should a miracle happen, and a kidney become available. As a life-long Batchelor with no children and the only remaining family being my 79-year-old mom, the decision was easy. After speaking with my mom about my decision for hospice, I was truly at peace and ready to see Jim!
Two days after Jim passed, I received a call from a former colleague from the military. I answered the phone and she said, “what’s this about you needing a kidney…..I’m gonna give you one so what do we have to do.” I explained we would likely do a donor match, where she would give her kidney to a recipient, and I would receive their donor’s kidney. She inquired as to why I wouldn’t get her kidney. I explained that my blood type, B+, was rare. Ashley said, “Scott, I’m B+ and so is Bill (her husband).” In January of 2021, Ashley began testing to see if she would be a match. The transplant took place March 11, 2021, ironically on World Kidney Day.
Three days after the transplant, I transitioned to the Fisher House for three months. As most of us remember, during this time, the nation was still dealing with the implications and restrictions of CV19; this was very much true with the Fisher House. Due to the restrictions, a care giver not currently with the patient, was required to quarantine in a hotel for two weeks and then could move to the Fisher House. Friends volunteered to come up for a month at a time, but I just couldn’t ask that commitment from anyone, especially with the quarantine requirements. Like most things in life, I would just face this situation head on and adjust as necessary until I got home. Little did I know I would be surrounded by a group of people that became my “Fisher House Family.”
In normal times, most every room is filled with a patient and/or their family members; some staying several days and others, like me, months. Under the CV19 restrictions, only five families were assigned to any one Fisher House. My house consisted of three other kidney transplant patients, their caregivers, and one lady going through treatment for breast cancer and her husband. I believe this restricted number of guests, brought us together quickly, instead of being strangers passing in the common areas.
In a short time, we became close, supporting each other through the up and downs of treatments, medicine regimens (I was on nineteen medications post transplant), late-night trips to the ER, birthdays and even a 45-year wedding anniversary. I learned, prior to the restrictions of CV19, at three to four times a week, a volunteer organization would come to the Fisher House and cook or bring food for the residents. As this was not an option, we began a process of cooking “family meals” at least three times per week; my responsibility was breakfast on Saturday mornings.
The staff of the Fisher House took every precaution necessary to protect us and yet continued to provide services and support throughout the entire stay. I remember walking into the kitchen one morning and seeing a note on top of a pile of groceries. It said, “Happy Memorial Day, look inside the refrigerator.” We were provided with a full complement of items needed for a cookout to remember those that had gone before us and celebrate our successes. This cookout also turned into a going away party for me; I was cleared to come home two days later.
As you can imagine, we became close and stay in touch to this day. I’m happy and blessed to say all the transplant patients are thriving and living their best lives.

We are excited to announce that Fink Cigar Company has made a generous donation of more than $57K to Fisher House Inc. following the success of their annual Cigar Bash event. This incredible contribution will go a long way in supporting the vital work Fisher House does for military families in need.

Since 2012, Fisher House Inc. has been the proud beneficiary of this incredible event totally over 400K in Contributions.
Fink Cigar’s donation is a testament to their unwavering commitment to supporting those who serve our country and their families. The funds raised will help Fisher House In. expand its services, ensuring that military families have a safe, supportive place to stay during difficult times, easing the emotional and financial burdens of having a loved one in medical care.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Fink Cigar Company for their continued support and generosity. This donation not only reflects the spirit of giving that defines the Cigar Bash, but also highlights the power of community and the impact we can make when we come together to support those in need. Additionally, a heartfelt thank you goes out to all who attended and participated in the Cigar Bash. Your contributions, both large and small, make a meaningful difference in the lives of military families. Thank you again, Fink Cigar Company, for your incredible generosity and commitment to Fisher House Inc. Together, we are making a lasting impact!

In 2006, a small group of retiring military officers came together in San Antonio with a shared desire to continue serving their country, even after leaving active duty. With fewer than ten original members, they formed the San Antonio Defense Gang, a network dedicated to supporting one another and the broader military community. Their mission was simple yet profound: to maintain the core values and sense of camaraderie they had built during their years in uniform while providing a platform for personal and professional support.
Since its inception, the San Antonio Defense Gang has grown steadily, now boasting more than 350 retired senior officers from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force—all Colonels and Captains. United by a deep respect for military tradition, the group has become a cornerstone of support for active-duty personnel, veterans, and their families in the San Antonio area.
One of the group’s most notable contributions has been its longstanding partnership with Fisher Houses Inc.. The San Antonio Defense Gang chose the Fisher House Inc. as their charity of choice in 2008, with an initial donation of $2,500. Over the years, as the group’s membership grew, so did their financial contributions. In 2024, the Defense Gang made a remarkable donation of $93,000 to support the Fisher Houses in San Antonio. This brings their total contributions since 2008 to more than $700,000, far surpassing their original goal of supporting military families in need.
Fisher House Inc. expresses its deep gratitude for the unwavering support of the San Antonio Defense Gang. Their dedication to serving military families—both active duty and veterans—has made a lasting impact, and they remain a vital part of the community’s efforts to care for those who have served our nation.
